Abstract: The work presented in this paper aims at restricting the input parameter values of the semi-analytical model used in GALICS and MOMAF, so as to derive which parameters influence the most the results, e.g., star formation, feedback and halo recycling efficiencies, etc. Our approach is to proceed empirically: we run lots of simulations and derive the correct ranges of values. The computation time needed is so large, that we need to run on a grid of computers. Hence, we model GALICS and MOMAF execution time and output files size, and run the simulation using a grid middleware: DIET. All the complexity of accessing resources, scheduling simulations and managing data is harnessed by DIET and hidden behind a web portal accessible to the users., Accepted and Published in AIP Conference Proceedings 1241, 2010, pages 816-825

Abstract: International audience; Different scientific workflow languages have been developed to help programmers in designing complex data analysis pro- cedures. However, little effort has been invested in com- paring and finding a common root for existing approaches. This work is motivated by the search for a scientific workflow language which coherently integrates different aspects of dis- tributed computing. The language proposed is data-driven for easing the expression of parallel flows. It leverages array programming principles to ease data-intensive applications design. It provides a rich set of control structures and it- eration strategies while avoiding unnecessary programming constructs. It allows programmers to express a wide set of applications in a compact framework.

Abstract: A large class of applications need to execute the same workflow on different datasets of identical size. Efficient execution of such applications necessitates intelligent distribution of the application components and tasks on a parallel machine, and the execution can be orchestrated by utilizing task, data, pipelined, and/or replicated parallelism. The scheduling problem that encompasses all of these techniques is called pipelined workflow scheduling , and it has been widely studied in the last decade. Multiple models and algorithms have flourished to tackle various programming paradigms, constraints, machine behaviors, or optimization goals. This article surveys the field by summing up and structuring known results and approaches.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we study the problem of finding optimal mappings for several independent but concurrent workflow applications, in order to optimize performance-related criteria together with energy consumption. Each application consists of a linear chain graph with several stages, and processes successive data sets in pipeline mode, from the first to the last stage. The problem is to decide which processors to enroll, at which speed (or mode) to use them, and which stages they should execute. There is a clear trade-off to reach, since running faster and/or more processors leads to better performance, but energy consumption is then very high. Energy savings can be achieved at the price of a lower performance, by reducing processor speeds or enrolling fewer resources. We study the problem complexity on different target execution platforms, ranking from fully homogeneous platforms to fully heterogeneous ones. We consider three mapping strategies: (i) one-to-one mappings, where a processor is assigned a single stage; (ii) interval mappings, where a processor may process an interval of consecutive stages of the same application; and (iii) general mappings, which are fully arbitrary, i. e. a processor may process stages of several distinct applications. Finally, we compare two different models for the computation of the latency, which is the time elapsed between the beginning and the end of the execution of a given data set: with the PATH model, it is computed as the length of the path taken by this data set, while with the WAVEFRONT model, each data set progresses concurrently within a period. For all platform types, all mapping strategies and both latency models, we establish the complexity of several multi-criteria optimization problems, whose objective functions combine period, latency and energy criteria. In particular, we exhibit instances where the problem is NP-hard with concurrent applications, while it can be solved in polynomial time for a single application, and instances whose problem complexity depends upon the latency model.

Abstract: Mapping a pipelined application onto a distributed and parallel platform is a challenging problem. The problem becomes even more difficult when multiple optimization criteria are involved, and when the target resources are heterogeneous (processors and communication links) and subject to failures. This paper investigates the problem of mapping pipelined applications, consisting of a linear chain of stages executed in a pipeline way, onto such platforms. The objective is to optimize the reliability under a performance constraint, i.e., while guaranteeing a threshold throughput. In order to increase reliability, we replicate the execution of stages on multiple processors. We compare interval mappings, where the application is partitioned into intervals of consecutive stages, with general mappings, where stages may be partitioned without any constraint, thereby allowing a better usage of processors and communication network capabilities. However, the price to pay for general mappings is a dramatic increase in the problem complexity. We show that computing the period of a given general mapping is an NP-complete problem, and we give polynomial bounds to determine a (conservative) approximated value. On the contrary, the period of an interval mapping obeys a simple formula, and we provide an optimal dynamic programming algorithm for the bi-criteria interval mapping problem on homogeneous platforms. On the more practical side, we design a set of efficient heuristics, and we compare the performance of interval and general mapping strategies through extensive simulations.

Abstract: International audience; Scheduling problems are already difficult on traditional parallel machines, and they become extremely challenging on heterogeneous clusters. In this paper, we deal with the problem of scheduling multiple applications, made of collections of independent and identical tasks, on a heterogeneous master-worker platform. The applications are submitted online, which means that there is no a priori (static) knowledge of the workload distribution at the beginning of the execution. The objective is to minimize the maximum stretch, i.e., the maximum ratio between the actual time an application has spent in the system and the time this application would have spent if executed alone. On the theoretical side, we design an optimal algorithm for the offline version of the problem (when all release dates and application characteristics are known beforehand). We also introduce a heuristic for the general case of online applications. On the practical side, we have conducted extensive simulations and MPI experiments, showing that we are able to deal with very large problem instances in a few seconds. Also, the solution that we compute totally outperforms classical heuristics from the literature, thereby fully assessing the usefulness of our approach.

Abstract: Desktop Grids, such as XtremWeb and BOINC, and Service Grids, such as EGEE, are two different approaches for science communities to gather computing power from a large number of computing resources. Nevertheless, little work has been done to combine these two Grid technologies in order to establish a seamless and vast Grid resource pool. In this paper we present the EGEE Service Grid, the BOINC and XtremWeb Desktop Grids. Then, we present the EDGeS solution to bridge the EGEE Service Grid with the BOINC and XtremWeb Desktop Grids.

Abstract: International audience; Heterogeneous distributed systems are widely deployed for executing computationally intensive parallel applications with diverse computing needs. Such environments require effective scheduling strategies that take into account both algorithmic and architectural characteristics. Unfortunately, most of the scheduling algorithms developed for such systems rely on a simple platform model where communication contention is not taken into account. In addition, it is generally assumed that processors are completely safe. To schedule precedence graphs in a more realistic framework, we introduce first an efficient fault-tolerant scheduling algorithm that is both contention-aware and capable of supporting an arbitrary number of fail-silent (fail-stop) processor failures. Next, we derive a more complex heuristic that departs from the main principle of the first algorithm. Instead of considering a single task (one with highest priority) and assigning all its replicas to the currently best available resources, we consider a chunk of ready tasks, and assign all their replicas in the same decision making procedure. This leads to a better load balance of processors and communication links. We focus on a bi-criteria approach, where we aim at minimizing the total execution time, or latency, given a fixed number of failures supported in the system. Our algorithms have a low time complexity, and drastically reduce the number of additional communications induced by the replication mechanism. Experimental results fully demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed algorithms, which lead to efficient execution schemes while guaranteeing a prescribed level of fault-tolerance.

Abstract: International audience; Among existing grid middleware approaches, one simple, powerful, and flexible approach consists of using servers available in different administrative domains through the classic client-server or Remote Procedure Call (RPC) paradigm. Network Enabled Servers (NES) implement this model also called GridRPC. Clients submit computation requests to a scheduler whose goal is to find a server available on the grid using some performance metric. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of a NES middleware developed in the GRAAL team called DIET and to describe recent developments around plugin schedulers, workflow management, and tools. DIET (Distributed Interactive Engineering Toolbox) is a hierarchical set of components used for the development of applications based on computational servers on the grid.

Abstract: International audience; Within computational Grids, some services (typically software components, e.g., linear algebra libraries) are made available by some servers to some clients. In spite of the growing popularity of such Grids, the service discovery, although efficient in many cases, does not reach several requirements. Among them, the flexibility of the discovery and its efficiency on wide-area dynamic platforms are two major issues. Therefore, it becomes crucial to propose new tools coping with such platforms. Emerging peer-to-peer technologies provide algorithms allowing the distribution and the retrieval of data items while addressing the dynamicity of the underlying network. Whereas merging peer-to-peer technology and Grid infrastructures has been widely suggested, very few implementations are available. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we present the design, the implementation and the experimentation of the first architecture, to our knowledge, extending traditional Network-Enabled Servers (NES) systems with an unstructured peer-to-peer network. This extension allows to dynamically connect distributed agents thus providing to clients an entry point to servers geographically distributed. Our implementation is based on the Diet middleware and the JXTA toolbox and experimentation have been conducted on a high speed network. Then, we study the service discovery in a pure peer-to-peer environment. We describe a new trie-based approach for the peer-to-peer service discovery service, supporting range queries while providing fault-tolerance and taking into account the topology of the underlying network. We validate this approach both by analysis and simulation.

Abstract: International audience; We consider the problem of designing a dynamic scheduling strategy that takes into account both workload and memory information in the context of the parallel multifrontal factorization. The originality of our approach is that we base our estimations (work and memory) on a static optimistic scenario during the analysis phase. This scenario is then used during the factorization phase to constrain the dynamic decisions that compute fully irregular partitions in order to better balance the workload. We show that our new scheduling algorithm significantly improves both the memory behaviour and the factorization time. We give experimental results for large challenging real-life 3D problems on 64 and 128 processors.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we discuss several algorithms for scheduling divisible workloads on heterogeneous systems. Our main contributions are (i) new optimality results for single-round algorithms and (ii) the design of an asymptotically optimal multi-round algorithm. This multi-round algorithm automatically performs resource selection, a difficult task that was previously left to the user. Because it is periodic, it is simpler to implement, and more robust to changes in the speeds of the processors and/or communication links. On the theoretical side, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first published result assessing the absolute performance of a multi-round algorithm. On the practical side, extensive simulations reveal that our multi-round algorithm outperforms existing solutions on a large variety of platforms, especially when the communication-to-computation ratio is not very high (the difficult case).

Abstract: International audience; The elimination tree model for sparse unsymmetric matrices and an algorithm for constructing it have been recently proposed [Eisenstat and Liu, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 26 (2005) and 29 (2008)]. The construction algorithm has a worst-case time complexity of ${\Theta}(mn)$ for an $n\times n$ unsymmetric matrix having $m$ off-diagonal nonzeros. We propose another algorithm that has a worst-case time complexity of ${\mathcal O}(m\log n)$. We compare the two algorithms experimentally and show that both algorithms are efficient in general. The algorithm of Eisenstat and Liu is faster in many practical cases, yet there are instances in which there is a significant difference between the running time of the two algorithms in favor of the proposed one.; Eisenstat et Liu ont récemment décrit l'arbre d'élimination pour des matrices creuses non symétriques et ont proposé un algorithme pour le construire en temps O(mn) pour une matrice de taille n ayant m éléments non nuls hors diagonaux [Eisenstat and Liu, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 26 (2005) and 29 (2008)]. Nous décrivons un algorithme dont la complexité en temps est O(m log n). Nous comparons les deux algorithmes expérimentalement et montrent que les deux sont efficaces en général. L'algorithme de Eisenstat et Liu est plus rapide dans de nombreux cas pratiques, mais il y a des cas dans lesquels la différence entre le temps d'exécution de deux algorithmes est significative en faveur de le nôtre.

Abstract: International audience; Distributed computing infrastructures are commonly used through scientific gateways, but operating these gateways requires important human intervention to handle operational incidents. This paper presents a self-healing process that quantifies incident degrees of workflow activities from metrics measuring long-tail effect, application efficiency, data transfer issues, and site-specific problems. These metrics are simple enough to be computed online and they make little assumptions on the application or resource characteristics. From their degree, incidents are classified in levels and associated to sets of healing actions that are selected based on association rules modeling correlations between incident levels. We specifically study the long-tail effect issue, and propose a new algorithm to control task replication. The healing process is parametrized on real application traces acquired in production on the European Grid Infrastructure. Experimental results obtained in the Virtual Imaging Platform show that the proposed method speeds up execution up to a factor of 4, consumes up to 26% less resource time than a control execution and properly detects unrecoverable errors.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we study the problem of replica placement in tree networks subject to server capacity and distance constraints. The client requests are known beforehand, while the number and location of the servers are to be determined. The Single policy enforces that all requests of a client are served by a single server in the tree, while in the Multiple policy, the requests of a given client can be processed by multiple servers, thus distributing the processing of requests over the platform. For the Single policy, we prove that all instances of the problem are NP-hard, and we propose approximation algorithms. The problem with the Multiple policy was known to be NP-hard with distance constraints, but we provide a polynomial time optimal algorithm to solve the problem in the particular case of binary trees when no request exceeds the server capacity.

Abstract: We propose algorithms for allocating multiple resources to competing services running in virtual machines on heterogeneous distributed platforms. We develop a theoretical problem formulation and compare these algorithms via simulation experiments based in part on workload data supplied by Google. Our main finding is that vector packing approaches proposed in the homogeneous case can be extended to provide high-quality solutions in the heterogeneous case, and combined to provide a single efficient algorithm. We also consider the case when there may be errors in estimates of performance-related resource needs. We provide a resource sharing algorithm and prove that for the single-resource, single-node case, when there is no bound on the error, its performance ratio relative to an omniscient optimal algorithm is $\frac{2J-1}{J^2}$, where $J$ is the number of services. We also provide a heuristic approach for compensating for bounded errors in resource need estimates that performs well in simulation.; Nous proposons des algorithmes pour l'allocation des ressources aux services concurrents s'exécutant dans des machines virtuelles déployées sur des systèmes hétérogènes et distribuées. Nous développons une formulation théorique du problème et comparons les algorithmes proposés via des simulations basées en partie sur des traces mises à disposition par Google. Notre principale conclusion est que les approches de \emph{bin packing} vectoriel proposées pour le cas homogène peuvent être étendues afin de fournir des solutions de qualité dans le cas hétérogène. Ces approches peuvent également être combinées entre elles pour fournir un seul algorithme efficace. Nous considérons également le cas où les estimations des besoins en ressources sont connus de manière imparfaite. Nous montrons, quand il y a un unique nœud et une unique ressource, et quand l'erreur maximale sur l'estimation des besoins en ressource n'est pas bornée, que l'on peut définir un algorithme avec un facteur de compétitivité de $\frac{2J-1}{J^2}$, où $J$ est le nombre de services. Quand il existe une borne sur l'erreur maximale sur l'estimation des besoins, nous définissons une heuristique qui obtient de très bonnes performances même en présence de telles erreurs.

Abstract: Distributed computing infrastructures are commonly used through scientific gate- ways, but operating these gateways requires important human intervention to handle operational incidents. This report presents a self-healing process that quantifies incident degrees of workflow activities from metrics measuring long-tail effect, application efficiency, data transfer issues, and site-specific problems. These metrics are simple enough to be computed online and they make little assumptions on the application or resource characteristics. From their degree, incidents are classified in levels and associated to sets of healing actions that are selected based on association rules modeling correlations between incident levels. We specifically study the long-tail effect issue, and propose a new algorithm to control task replication. The healing process is parametrized on real application traces acquired in production on the European Grid Infrastructure. Experimental results obtained in the Virtual Imaging Platform show that the proposed method speeds up exe- cution up to a factor of 4, consumes up to 26% less resource time than a control execution and properly detects unrecoverable errors.; Les infrastructures de calcul distribué sont couramment utilisées à travers des environnements applicatifs dédiés, mais l'administration de ces environnements demande un effort humain important pour résoudre les incidents qui surviennent en production. Ce rapport présente une méthode d'administration automatique qui quantifie le degré des incidents touchant les activités des chaînes de traitements. Ce degré est obtenu à partir de métriques mesurant le retard des dernières tâches, l'efficacité de l'application, les problèmes de transfert de données et la spécificité d'un incident à un site. Ces métriques sont suffisamment simples pour être calculées en ligne, et elles font très peu d'hypothèses sur les caractéristiques des applications et des ressources. A partir de leur degré, les incidents sont classés en niveaux et associés à des ensembles d'actions sélectionnées à partir de règles d'association qui modélisent la corrélation entre niveaux. Nous étudions particulièrement le retard des dernières tâches et nous proposons un algorithme pour contrôler leur réplication. Notre méthode d'administration automatique est paramétrée à partir de traces d'applications réelles acquises en production sur l'infrastructure de grille européenne (EGI). Des résultats expérimentaux obtenus sur la Plate-forme d'Imagerie Virtuelle (VIP) montrent que la méthode peut accélérer l'exécution jusqu'à un facteur 4, économise 26% de ressources par rapport à une exécution-témoin, et détecte correctement les incidents qui ne peuvent pas être résolus.

It provides a minimal set of functions to handle a large set of data operations: movements, replications, migrations, persistency and data prefetch, which can be used by clients or workflow systems for example. Abstract: This paper surveys the risks brought by multitenancy in software platforms, along with the most prominent solutions proposed to address them. A multitenant platform hosts and executes software from several users (tenants). The platform must ensure that no malicious or faulty code from any tenant can interfere with the normal execution of other users' code or with the platform itself. This security requirement is specially relevant in Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) clouds. PaaS clouds offer an execution environment based on some software platform. Unless PaaS systems are deemed as safe environments users will be reluctant to trust them to run any relevant application. This requires to take into account how multitenancy is handled by the software platform used as the basis of the PaaS offer. This survey focuses on two technologies that are or will be the platform-of-choice in many PaaS clouds: Java and .NET. We describe the security mechanisms they provide, study their limitations as multitenant platforms and analyze the research works that try to solve those limitations. We include in this analysis some standard container technologies (such as Enterprise Java Beans) that can be used to standardize the hosting environment of PaaS clouds. Also we include a brief discussion of Operating Systems (OSs) traditional security capacities and why OSs are unlikely to be chosen as the basis of PaaS offers. Finally, we describe some research initiatives that reinforce security by monitoring the execution of untrusted code, whose results can be of interest in multitenant systems.; Ce papier étudie les risques induits par les architectures multiutilisateurs pour les plates-formes logicielles, et les solutions les plus avancées pour résoudre ces questions. Une plate-forme multi-utilisateurs héberge et exécute des logiciels pour plusieurs utilisateurs. La plate-forme doit assurer qu'aucun code maliceux ou défaillant provenant d'un utilisateur ne vienne interférer avec l'exécution normale d'un autre code utilisateur ou avec la plate-forme en elle-même. Ce besoin de sécurité est particulièrement approprié dans les infrastructures en nuage de type PaaS (pour Platform-as-a-Service). Les PaaS en nuage offre un environnement d'exécution basé sur des plates-formes logicielles. A moins que les systèmes PaaS soient considérés comme des environnements sécurisés les utilisateurs seront récalcitrants a faire confiance à ces plates-formes pour exécuter les applications appropriées. Abstract: Infrastructure as a Service clouds are a f lexible and fast way to obtain (virtual) resources as demand varies. Grids, on the other hand, are middleware platforms able to combine resources from different administrative domains for tasks execution. Clouds can be used by grids as providers of devices such as virtual machines, so they only use the resources they need. This requires grids to be able to decide when to allocate and release those resources. Here we introduce and analyze by simulations an economic mechanism a) to set resource prices and b) resolve when to scale resources depending on the users demand. This system has a strong emphasis on fairness, so no user hinders the execution of other users' tasks by getting too many resources. Our simulator is based on the well-known GridSim software for grid simulation, which we expand to simulate infrastructure clouds. The results show how the proposed system can successfully adapt the amount of allocated resources to the demand, while at the same time ensuring that resources are fairly shared among users.; Les infrastructures de services dans l'informatique en nuage sont une solution flexible et rapide pour obtenir des ressources (virtuelles) en fonction des besoins. D'un autre côté, les plates-formes de grilles bénéficient d'intergiciels permettant de combiner les ressources provenant de domaines administratifs différents pour l'exécution de tâches. Les grilles peuvent utiliser l'informatique de nuages en tant que fournisseur de machines virtuelles et ainsi se limiter à l'utilisation des ressources nécessaires. Cela implique que les grilles soient capables de décider quand allouer ou libérer les ressources. Dans ces travaux nous introduisons et analysons par simulations un modèle économique pour a) déterminer le prix des ressources et b) déterminer quand il faut étendre les ressources en fonction des demandes des utilisateurs. Le système mis en place tient fortement compte de l'équité, ainsi aucun utilisateurs ne vient perturber les tâches des autres utilisateurs en venant consommer trop de ressources. Notre simulateur est basé sur le simulateur GridSim que nous avons étendu pour simuler les infrastructure d'informatique en nuages. Les résultats montrent comment le système proposé peut avec succès adapter la demande à la quantité de ressources allouées tout en respectant l'équité entre les utilisateurs.

Abstract: The study of parallel and distributed applications and platforms, whether in the cluster, grid, peer-to-peer, volunteer, or cloud computing domain, often mandates empirical evaluation of proposed algorithm and system solutions via simulation. Unlike direct experimentation via an application deployment on a real-world testbed, simulation enables fully repeatable and configurable experiments that can often be conducted quickly for arbitrary hypothetical scenarios. In spite of these promises, current simulation practice is often not conducive to obtaining scientifically sound results. State-of-the-art simulators are often not validated and their accuracy is unknown. Furthermore, due to the lack of accepted simulation frameworks and of transparent simulation methodologies, published simulation results are rarely reproducible. We highlight recent advances made in the context of the SimGrid simulation framework in a view to addressing this predicament across the aforementioned domains. These advances, which pertain both to science and engineering, together lead to unprecedented combinations of simulation accuracy and scalability, allowing the user to trade off one for the other. They also enhance simulation usability and reusability so as to promote an Open Science approach for simulation-based research in the field.; L'étude de systèmes et applications parallèles et distribués, qu'il s'agisse de clusters, de grilles, de systèmes pair-à-pair de volunteer computing, ou de cloud, demandent souvent l'évaluation empirique par simulation des algorithmes et solutions proposés. Contrairement à l'expérimentation directe par déploiement d'applications sur des plates-formes réelles, la simulation permet des expériences reproductibles pouvant être menée rapidement sur n'importe quel scénario hypothétique. Malgré ces avantages théoriques, les pratiques actuelles en matière de simulation ne permettent souvent pas d'obtenir des résultats scientifiquement éprouvés. Les simulateurs classiques sont trop souvent validés et leur réalisme n'est pas démontré. De plus, le manque d'environnements de simulation communément acceptés et de méthodologies classiques de simulation font que les résultats publiés grâce à cette approche sont rarement reproductibles par la communauté. Nous présentons dans cet article les avancées récentes dans le contexte de l'environnement SimGrid pour répondre à ces difficultés. Ces avancées, comprenant à la fois des aspects techniques et scientifiques, rendent possible une combinaison inégalée de réalisme et précision de simulation et d'extensibilité. Cela permet aux utilisateurs de choisir le grain des modèles utilisés pour ses simulations en fonction de ses besoins de réalisme et d'extensibilité. Les travaux présentés ici améliorent également l'utilisabilité et la réutilisabilité de façon à promouvoir l'approche d'Open Science pour les recherches basées sur la simulation dans notre domaine.

Abstract: Nous nous intéressons au routage des communications dans un processeur multi-cœur (CMP). Le but est de trouver un routage valide, c'est-à-dire un routage dans lequel la quantité de données routée entre deux cœurs voisins ne dépasse pas la bande passante maximale, et tel que la puissance dissipée dans les communications est minimale. Nous nous positionnons au niveau système : nous supposons que des applications, sous forme de graphes de tâches, s'exécutent sur le CMP, chaque tâche étant déjà assignée à un cœur. Nous avons donc un ensemble de communications à router entre les cœurs. Nous utilisons un modèle classique, dans lequel la puissance dissipée par un lien de communication est la somme d'une partie statique et d'une partie dynamique, cette dernière dépendant de la fréquence du lien. Cette fréquence est ajustable et proportionnelle à la bande passante. La politique la plus utilisée est le routage XY : chaque communication est en- voyée horizontalement, puis verticalement. Cependant si nous nous autorisons à utiliser les chemins de Manhattan entre la source et la destination, la puissance dissipée peut être considérablement réduite. De plus, il est parfois possible de trouver une solution, alors qu'il n'en existait pas avec un routage XY. Dans ce papier, nous comparons le routage XY et le routage via des chemins de Manhattan, aussi bien d'un point de vue théorique que d'un point de vue pratique. Nous considérons deux variantes du routage par chemins de Manhattan : dans un routage à chemin unique, un seul chemin peut être utilisé pour chaque communication, tandis que le routage à chemin multiples nous permet d'éclater une communication et de lui faire emprunter plusieurs routes. Nous établissons la NP-complétude du problème consistant à trouver un routage Manhattan qui minimise la puissance dissipée, exhibons la borne supérieure minimale du ratio entre la puissance dissipée par un routage XY et celle dissipée par un routage Manhattan, et pour terminer, nous effectuons des simulations pour étudier les performances de nos heuristiques de routage Manhattan.

Abstract: International audience; Improving the network lifetime is an important design criterion for wireless sensor networks. To achieve this goal, we propose in this paper a novel approach which applies source-coding on addresses in heterogeneous IPv6 Cluster-based wireless sensor network. We formulate the problem of maximiz- ing the network lifetime when Slepian-wolf coding is applied on addresses in network composed of line-powered and battery- powered sensors. This problem optimizes the placement of line- powered sensors to enable the battery-powered ones to exploit the addresses correlation and reduce the size of their emitted packets and thus improve the network lifetime. The numerical results show that a significant network lifetime improvement can be achieved (about 25% in typical scenario).

Abstract: International audience; Simulation is a popular approach to obtain objective performance indicators platforms that are not at one's disposal. It may help the dimensioning of compute clusters in large computing centers. In this work we present a framework for the off-line simulation of MPI applications. Its main originality with regard to the literature is to rely on time-independent execution traces. This allows us to completely decouple the acquisition process from the actual replay of the traces in a simulation context. Then we are able to acquire traces for large application instances without being limited to an execution on a single compute cluster. Finally our framework is built on top of a scalable, fast, and validated simulation kernel. In this paper, we present the used time-independent trace format, investigate several acquisition strategies, detail the developed trace replay tool, and assess the quality of our simulation framework in terms of accuracy, acquisition time, simulation time, and trace size.; La simulation est une approche très populaire pour obtenir des indicateurs de performances objectifs sur des plates-formes qui ne sont pas disponibles. Cela peut permettre le dimensionnement de grappes de calculs au sein de grands centres de calcul. Dans cet article nous présentons un outil de simulation post-mortem d'applications MPI. Sa principale originalité au regard de la littérature est d'utiliser des traces d'exécution indépendantes du temps. Cela permet de découpler intégralement le processus d'acquisition des traces de celui de rejeu dans un contexte de simulation. Il est ainsi possible d'obtenir des traces pour de grandes instances de problèmes sans être limité à des exécutions au sein d'une unique grappe. Enfin notre outil est développé au dessus d'un noyau de simulation scalable, rapide et validé. Cet article présente le format de traces indépendantes du temps utilisé, étudie plusieurs stratégies d'acquisition, détaille l'outil de rejeu que nous avons dévelopé, et evalué la qualité de nos simulations en termes de précision, temps d'acuisition, temps de simulation et tailles de traces.

Abstract: International audience; High-performance scientific applications are becoming increasingly complex, in particular because of the coupling of parallel codes. This results in applications having a complex structure, characterized by multiple deploy-time parameters, such as the number of processes of each code. In order to optimize the performance of these applications, the parameters have to be carefully chosen, a process which is highly resource dependent. However, the abstractions provided by current Resource Management Systems (RMS) - either submitting rigid jobs or enumerating a list of moldable configurations - are insufficient to efficiently select resources for such applications. This paper introduces CooRM, an RMS architecture that delegates resource selection to applications while still keeping control over the resources. The proposed architecture is evaluated using a simulator which is then validated with a proof-of-concept implementation on Grid'5000. Results show that such a system is feasible and performs well with respect to scalability and fairness.

Abstract: International audience; In the context of increasing developments of home, building and city automation, the Power Line Communication (PLC) networking medium is called for unpreceeding usage. Our view of the future building networking infrastructure places PLC as the central point. We show in this paper that even if Wireless Sensors Networks (WSN) are good candidates in several cases of the sensor and actuator networking infrastructure, PLC is mandatory in several place of the smart-grid metering and command infrastructure. Also PLC will serve the infrastructure on the sensor/actuator side when the energy requirement cannot be fulfilled by autonomous battery and capacitor based nodes. PLC may provide the numerous bridges necessary to sustain a long lifetime (years) for the WSN infrastructures. This new role of PLC networking will be possible only if the inter-operability between all media and technology is made possible. Thanks to the design of converging IPv6 networking layers, we show that full inter-operability is already possible even in very tiny constrained networking devices. Moreover, low energy PLC, will be able to provide smart grid monitoring without impacting the overall energy balance.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we study the problem of scheduling a collection of workflows, identical or not, on a SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) grid . A workflow (job) is represented by a directed acyclic graph (DAG) with typed tasks. All of the grid hosts are able to process a set of typed tasks with unrelated processing costs and are able to transmit files through communication links for which the communication times are not negligible. The goal of our study is to minimize the maximum completion time (makespan) of the workflows. To solve this problem we propose a genetic approach. The contributions of this paper are both the design of a Genetic Algorithm taking the communication costs into account and its performance analysis.

Abstract: International audience; The routing protocol for low power and lossy networks (RPL) was recently designed in the ROLL working group at IETF. Few simulation tools exist that enable its evaluation in order to prepare for its real deployment. In this paper, we provide a new evaluation of this protocol with two approaches using two different simulators adapted to our needs. We first evaluated the value of mobile sinks in wireless sensor networks to extend the network lifetime using a sensor network simulator, WSNet, augmented by our own RPL module. We then focus on the performance comparison of simulated sensor networks and real powerline communication networks (PLC) using the RPL capable COOJA simulator augmented by our own PLC module. In each case, we justify the simulator choice, describe the tools implemented and present the obtained results. Our studies give two new RPL evaluations and show the interest of choosing a simulation tool adapted to the targeted study with the associated software developments. As a conclusion, we demonstrated how these two case studies can be combined in a heterogeneous network architecture to extend its global lifetime.

Abstract: International audience; Most high-performance computing resource managers only allow applications to request a static allocation of resources. However, evolving applications have resource requirements which change (evolve) during their execution. Currently, such applications are forced to make an allocation based on their peak resource requirements, which leads to an inefficient resource usage. This paper studies whether it makes sense for resource managers to support evolving applications. It focuses on scheduling fully-predictably evolving applications on homogeneous resources, for which it proposes several algorithms and evaluates them based on simulations. Results show that resource usage and application response time can be significantly improved with short scheduling times.

Abstract: Hypergraph and graph partitioning tools are used to partition work for efficient parallelization of many sparse matrix computations. Most of the time, the objective function that is reduced by these tools relates to reducing the communication requirements, and the balancing constraints satisfied by these tools relate to balancing the work or memory requirements. Sometimes, the objective sought for having balance is a complex function of the partition. We describe some important class of parallel sparse matrix computations that have such balance objectives. For these cases, the current state of the art partitioning tools fall short of being adequate. To the best of our knowledge, there is only a single algorithmic framework in the literature to address such balance objectives. We propose another algorithmic framework to tackle complex objectives and experimentally investigate the proposed framework.; Les outils de partitionnement de graphes et d'hypergraphes interviennent pour paralléliser efficacement de nombreux algorithmes liés aux matrices creuses. La plupart du temps, la fonction objectif minimisée par ces outils est liée au besoin de réduire les coûts de communication, tandis que les contraintes d'équilibre à satisfaire sont elles liées à l'équilibrage de la charge ou de la consommation mémoire. Parfois, l'objectif d'équilibre est une fonction complexe du partitionnement. Nous décrivons plusieurs applications majeures de calcul parallèle sur des matrices creuses où de telles contraintes d'équilibre apparaissent. Pour ces exemples, même les outils de partitionnement les plus pointus sont loin d'être adéquats. Pour autant que nous sachions, il n'existe dans la littérature qu'un seul cadre algorithmique qui traite ces problèmes. Nous proposons ici une nouvelle approche algorithmique et fournissons des résultats d'expériences la mettant en œuvre.

Abstract: We propose a novel job scheduling approach for homogeneous cluster computing platforms. Its key feature is the use of virtual machine technology to share fractional node resources in a precise and controlled manner. Other VM-based scheduling approaches have focused primarily on technical issues or on extensions to existing batch scheduling systems, while we take a more aggressive approach and seek to find heuristics that maximize an objective metric correlated with job performance. We derive absolute performance bounds and develop algorithms for the online, non-clairvoyant version of our scheduling problem. We further evaluate these algorithms in simulation against both synthetic and real-world HPC workloads and compare our algorithms to standard batch scheduling approaches. We find that our approach improves over batch scheduling by orders of magnitude in terms of job stretch, while leading to comparable or better resource utilization. Our results demonstrate that virtualization technology coupled with lightweight online scheduling strategies can afford dramatic improvements in performance for executing HPC workloads.; Nous proposons une nouvelle approche de l'ordonnancement des applications sur les calculateurs parallèles homogènes. Sa principale caractéristique est l'utilisation de machines virtuelles pour organiser le partage de \emph{fractions} des ressources de manière précise et contrôlée. Les approches existantes utilisant des machines virtuelles se sont principalement intéressées à des problèmes techniques ou à l'extension des systèmes de batch existants. Notre approche est beaucoup plus aggressive et nous recherchons des heuristiques qui optimisent une métrique particulière. Nous établissons des bornes de performance absolues et nous développons des algorithmes pour la version en-ligne, non clairvoyante, de notre problème d'ordonnancement. Nous évaluons ces algorithmes au moyen de simulations impliquant soit des traces synthétiques, soit de traces d'un système HPC existant. Nous comparons par ce moyen nos solutions aux algorithmes d'ordonnancement par \emph{batch} les plus classiques. Nous montrons que notre approche permet d'améliorer de plusieurs ordres de grandeur le facteur de ralentissement (\emph{stretch}) subit par les applications par rapport aux systèmes de \emph{batch}, tout en ayant une utilisation comparable ou moindre des ressources. Nos résultats montrent que l'utilisation conjointe des techniques de virtualisation et de stratégies d'ordonnancement en-ligne permet d'améliorer très significativement l'exécution des applications dans les systèmes de calcul HPC.

Abstract: Non-predictably evolving applications are applications that change their resource requirements during execution. These applications exist, for example, as a result of using adaptive numeric methods, such as adaptive mesh refinement and adaptive particle methods. Increasing interest is being shown to have such applications acquire resources on the fly. However, current HPC Resource Management Systems (RMSs) only allow a static allocation of resources, which cannot be changed after it started. Therefore, non-predictably evolving applications cannot make efficient use of HPC resources, being forced to make an allocation based on their maximum expected requirements. This paper presents CooRMv2, an RMS which supports efficient scheduling of non-predictably evolving applications. An application can make "pre-allocations" to specify its peak resource usage. The application can then dynamically allocate resources as long as the pre-allocation is not outgrown. Resources which are pre-allocated but not used, can be filled by other applications. Results show that the approach is feasible and leads to a more efficient resource usage.; Les applications évolutives non-prédictibles sont des applications dont les besoins en ressources changent en cours d'exécution. Leurs comportements proviennent, par exemple, des méthodes numériques adaptatives, comme le raffinement de maillage adaptatif et les méthodes de particules adaptatives. Il y a un intérêt croissant à ce que ce type d'application acquiert des ressources à la volée. Cependant, les gestionnaires de ressources haute performance (HPC) ne supportent qu'une allocation statique des ressources, qui ne peut donc pas changer après le démarrage de l'application. Par conséquence, les applications évolutives non-prédictibles ne peuvent pas utiliser les ressources HPC de manière efficace, car elles sont forcées de faire une demande de ressources en fonction de leurs pics de besoins. Cet article présente CooRMv2, un gestionnaire de ressources qui permet l'ordonnancement efficace d'applications évolutives non-prédictibles. Une application peut faire des "pré-allocations" pour exprimer ses pics de besoins en ressources. Ensuite, l'application peut dynamiquement allouer de manière sûre des ressources tant que la pré-allocation n'est pas dépassée. Les ressources pré-allouées, mais inutilisées, sont à la disposition des autres applications. Les résultats montrent que l'approche est réalisable et que l'utilisation des ressources est améliorée.

Abstract: National audience; High performance scientific applications provide very interesting challenges from the software engineering point of view. In addition to their high performance requirement, their codes exhibit a long life cycle that includes reuse as part of code-coupling applications. Dedicated programming models are required to ease the adaptation of these codes over time without introducing overhead at runtime. HLCM is a component assembly model that supports high level concepts easing code adaptation. It prevents runtime overheads by implementing these concepts through transformation applied at deployment to generate a concrete assembly. This paper deals with our experience with metamodeling and model transformation as used to implement HLCM. It provides some feedback on the advantages and drawbacks we found by using a model driven approach.; Les applications scientifiques haute performance présentent des défis très intéressants du point de vue du génie logiciel. En plus de leur besoin de performances, leurs codes possèdent un cycle de vie long qui comporte des réutilisations au sein d'applications de couplage de codes. Ainsi, des modèles de programmation spécialisés sont requis pour faciliter l'adaptation de ces codes au cours du temps sans introduire de sur-coûts à l'exécution. HLCM est un modèle d'assemblage de composants qui comporte des concepts de haut niveau facilitant l'adaptation de codes. Il évite les sur-coûts à l'exécution en mettant en œuvre ces concepts par une transformation appliquée lors du déploiement pour générer un assemblage concret. Ce papier s'intéresse à notre expérience avec la métamodélisation et la transformation de modèles tel qu'utilisées pour mettre en œuvre HLCM. Il offre des retours sur les avantages et inconvénients que nous avons trouvés à utiliser une approche basée sur les modèles.

Abstract: International audience; Loosely coupled applications can take advantage of the publish/subscribe communication paradigm. In this latter, subscribers declare which events, or which range of events, they wish to monitor, and are asynchronously informed whenever a publishers throws an event. In such a system, when a publication occurs, all peers whose subscriptions contain the publication must be informed. In our approach, the subscriptions are represented by a DR-tree, which is an R-tree where each minimum bounding rectangle is supervised by a peer. Instead of attempting to statically optimize the DR-tree, we give an on-line algorithm, the work function algorithm, which continually changes the DR-tree in response to the sequence of publications, in attempt to dynamically optimize the structure. The competitiveness of this algorithm is computed to be at most 5 for any example where there are at most three subscriptions and the R-tree has height 2. The benefit of the on-line approach is that no prior knowledge of the distribution of publications in the attribute space is needed.

Abstract: National audience; Le phénomène des Clouds permet d'avoir une gestion de ressources dynamiques. L'efficacité de cette gestion devient une question importante avec la taille croissante du nombre de ressources et du nombre d'utilisateurs. A cause d'un coût d'initialisation non-négligeable, une prédiction précise des besoins doit être faite. Dans cet article, nous proposons une approche pour la prédiction de la charge basée sur l'identification d'occurrences similaires dans l'historique récent d'utilisation d'une plate-forme. Nous présentons en détail l'algorithme d'auto-redimensionnement qui utilise la méthode précédente pour assister le système à prendre des décisions d'allocation de ressources ainsi que des résultats d'expériences utilisant des traces de plate-formes de grilles et de Clouds. Nous présentons également une évaluation globale de l'approche, son potentiel et son utilité pour permettre une gestion optimisée des ressources dans les Clouds.

Abstract: GRID5000; This manual describes step-by-step how to create a Grid'5000 appliance that comprises all the tools needed to acquire time-independent traces of the execution of an MPI application. Time-independent traces are an original way to estimate the performance of parallel applications. It allows to totally decouple the acquisition of a trace from its replay in a simulation framework. This manual also details the different acquisition scenarios allowed by this approach. Traces can be acquired in a very classical way, by folding the execution on less resources, or by scattering the execution across multiple clusters.; Ce manuel décrit pas à pas la création d'une image système pour Griud'5000 comprenant tous les outils nécessaires à l'acquisition de traces de l'exécution d'une application MPI qui sont indépendantes du temps. L'utilisation de telles traces est une approche originale pour estimer les performances d'applications parallèles. Cela permet de découpler entièrement l'acquisition d'une trace de son rejeu dans un environnement de simulation. Ce manuel décrit également les différents scénarios d'acquisition rendus possibles par cette approche. Les traces peuvent être obtenues de façon classique, en repliant l'exécution sur moins de ressources, ou encore en répartissant l'exécution sur plusieurs grappes de machines.

Abstract: International audience; Accessing the power of distributed resources can nowadays easily be done using a middleware based on a client/server approach. Several architectures exist for those middleware's. The most scalable ones rely on a hierarchical design. Determining the best shape for the hierarchy, the one giving the best throughput of services, is not an easy task. We first propose a computation and communication model for such hierarchical middleware. Our model takes into account the deployment of several services in the hierarchy. Then, based on this model, we propose algorithms for automatically constructing a hierarchy on two kinds of heterogeneous platforms: communication homogeneous/computation heterogeneous platforms, and fully heterogeneous platforms. The proposed algorithms aim at offering the users the best obtained to requested throughput ratio, while providing fairness on this ratio for the different kinds of services, and using as few resources as possible for the hierarchy. For each kind of platforms, we compare our model with experimental results on a real middleware called DIET (Distributed Interactive Engineering Toolbox).

Abstract: This work provides an analysis of checkpointing strategies for minimizing expected job execution times in an environment that is subject to processor failures. In the case of both sequential and parallel jobs, we give the optimal solution for exponentially distributed failure inter-arrival times, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the rst rigorous proof that periodic check- pointing is optimal. For non-exponentially distributed failures, we develop a dynamic programming algorithm to maximize the amount of work completed before the next failure, which provides a good heuristic for minimizing the ex- pected execution time. Our work considers various models of job parallelism and of parallel checkpointing overhead. We rst perform extensive simulation experiments assuming that failures follow Exponential or Weibull distributions, the latter being more representative of real-world systems. The obtained results not only corroborate our theoretical ndings, but also show that our dynamic programming algorithm signi cantly outperforms previously proposed solutions in the case of Weibull failures. We then discuss results from simulation experi- ments that use failure logs from production clusters. These results con rm that our dynamic programming algorithm signi cantly outperforms existing solutions for real-world clusters.; Nous présentons dans ce travail une analyse rigoureuse des stratégies de checkpoint, pour les applications séquentielles et parallèles. L'objectif est de minimiser l'espérance du temps de complétion d'une application s'exécutant sur des processeurs pouvant être de victimes de pannes. Dans le cas séquentiel, une résolution exacte est proposée lorsque les intervalles inter-pannes sont distribués selon une loi exponentielle. Il semble que ce résultat soit la première preuve rigoureuse de l'optimalité des stratégies périodiques de checkpoint dans ce cadre. Dans le cas général (c'est-à-dire pour des lois quelconques), nous fournissons une programmation dynamique permettant des calculs optimaux, à un quantum de temps fixé près. Dans le cas des applications parallèles, nous étendons le résultat exact (pour le cas exponentiel), et ce pour différents modèles d'applications et de coûts de checkpoints. Pour le cas général, nous proposons une deuxième programmation dynamique (plus rapide) dont l'objectif est de maximiser l'espérance du travail fait avant la prochaine panne, qui s'avère fournir de bonnes approximations pour le problème initial. Nous validons nos résultats grâce à de nombreuses simulations, réalisées pour des lois inter-pannes de distribution exponentielles et de Weibull (cette dernière distribution étant selon de nombreuses études plus appropriée pour modéliser des durées inter-pannes). Ces simulations confirment nos résultats théoriques. De plus, ils apparaît que notre algorithme de programmation dynamique fournit de bien meilleures performances que les solutions existantes pour le cas des lois de Weibull.

Abstract: This work revisits existing algorithms for the QR factorization of rectangular matrices composed of p-by-q tiles, where p >= q. Within this framework, we study the critical paths and performance of algorithms such as Sameh and Kuck, Modi and Clarke, Greedy, and those found within PLASMA. Although neither Modi and Clarke nor Greedy is optimal, both are shown to be asymptotically optimal for all matrices of size p = q^2 f(q), where f is any function such that \lim_{+\infty} f= 0. This novel and important complexity result applies to all matrices where p and q are proportional, p = \lambda q, with \lambda >= 1, thereby encompassing many important situations in practice (least squares). We provide an extensive set of experiments that show the superiority of the new algorithms for tall matrices.

Abstract: 42 pages, available as LIP research report RR-2009-15; Numerical linear algebra and combinatorial optimization are vast subjects; as is their interaction. In virtually all cases there should be a notion of sparsity for a combinatorial problem to arise. Sparse matrices therefore form the basis of the interaction of these two seemingly disparate subjects. As the core of many of today's numerical linear algebra computations consists of the solution of sparse linear system by direct or iterative methods, we survey some combinatorial problems, ideas, and algorithms relating to these computations. On the direct methods side, we discuss issues such as matrix ordering; bipartite matching and matrix scaling for better pivoting; task assignment and scheduling for parallel multifrontal solvers. On the iterative method side, we discuss preconditioning techniques including incomplete factorization preconditioners, support graph preconditioners, and algebraic multigrid. In a separate part, we discuss the block triangular form of sparse matrices.

Abstract: We consider a task graph to be executed on a set of processors. We assume that the mapping is given, say by an ordered list of tasks to execute on each processor, and we aim at optimizing the energy consumption while enforcing a prescribed bound on the execution time. While it is not possible to change the allocation of a task, it is possible to change its speed. Rather than using a local approach such as backfilling, we consider the problem as a whole and study the impact of several speed variation models on its complexity. For continuous speeds, we give a closed-form formula for trees and series-parallel graphs, and we cast the problem into a geometric programming problem for general directed acyclic graphs. We show that the classical dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) model with discrete modes leads to a NP-complete problem, even if the modes are regularly distributed (an important particular case in practice, which we analyze as the incremental model). On the contrary, the VDD-hopping model leads to a polynomial solution. Finally, we provide an approximation algorithm for the incremental model, which we extend for the general DVFS model.

Abstract: In this paper, we study the problem of finding optimal mappings for several independent but concurrent workflow applications, in order to optimize performance-related criteria together with energy consumption. Each application consists in a linear chain graph with several stages, and processes successive data sets in pipeline mode, from the first to the last stage. The problem is to decide which processors to enroll, at which speed (or mode) to use them, and which stages they should execute. There is a clear trade-off to reach, since running faster and/or more processors leads to better performance, but energy consumption is then very high. Energy savings can be achieved at the price of a lower performance, by reducing processor speeds or enrolling fewer resources. We study the problem complexity on different target execution platforms, ranking from fully homogeneous platforms to fully heterogeneous ones. We consider three mapping strategies: (i) one-to-one mappings, where a processor is assigned a single stage; (ii) interval mappings, where a processor may process an interval of consecutive stages of the same application; and (iii) general mappings, which are fully arbitrary, i.e., a processor may process stages of several distinct applications. Finally, we compare two different models for the computation of the latency, which is the time elapsed between the beginning and the end of the execution of a given data set: with the Path model, it is computed as the length of the path taken by this data set, while with the Wavefront model, each data set progresses concurrently within a period. For all platform types, all mapping strategies and both latency models, we establish the complexity of several multi-criteria optimization problems, whose objective functions combine period, latency and energy criteria. In particular, we exhibit instances where the problem is NP-hard with concurrent applications, while it can be solved in polynomial time for a single application, and instances whose problem complexity depends upon the latency model.

Abstract: This paper introduces two new tape archival policies that can im- prove tape archive performance in certain regimes, compared to the classical RAIT (Redundant Array of Independent Tapes) policy. The first policy, PARALLEL, still requires as many parallel tape drives as RAIT but pre-computes large data stripes that are written contiguously on tapes to increase write/read performance. The second policy, VERTICAL, writes contiguous data into a single tape, while updating error correcting information on the fly and delaying its archival until enough data has been archived. This second approach reduces the number of tape drives used for every user request to one. The performance of the three RAIT, PARALLEL and VERTICAL policies is assessed through extensive simulations, using a hardware configuration and a distribution of I/O requests similar to these expected on the Blue Waters system. These simulations show that VERTICAL is the most suitable policy for small files, whereas PARALLEL must be used for files larger than 1 GB. We also demonstrate that RAIT never outperforms both proposed policies, and that a heterogeneous policies mixing VERTICAL and PARALLEL performs 10 times better than any other policy.

Abstract: Les Ateliers de Modélisation de l'Atmosphère. Toulouse.; National audience; We are interested in the large-scale environmental phenomenon of West African monsoon. It is the major atmospheric phenomenon, which drives the rainfall regime in Western Africa. The causes of spatio-temporal variability in monsoon rainfall have not yet been determined in an unequivocal manner. However, there is a considerable body of evidence suggesting that spatio-temporal changes in sea surface temperatures in the Gulf of Guinea and changes in the Saharan and sub-Saharan albedo are major factors. The aim of the study is to analyse the sensitivity of the rainfall simulated by a regional atmospheric model(MAR) to the variability of these inputs parameters. Precipitation from MAR is compared with severals precipitation data sets and the MAR reasonably simulates the Westy African monsoon. This model is expensive in computing time, the sensitivity analysis cannot be realized by running the MAR, as we work on discretization grids in space and time, that is with huge dimensions. Hence an important preliminary step is the construction of a stochastic spatio-temporal metamodel approximating the MAR. The main properties required for this metamodel is the ability to be ran in a reasonable time and the consideration of the spatio-temporal dynamic of the underlying physical phenomenon. In this study we neglect the effect of albedo and focus our effort on regressing the rainfall on the sea surface temperature (SST). An important point in this study is that the numerical storage and processing of model outputs, as far as the statistical description of the data, requires considerable computation resources. A grid environment can provide the required resources. Nevertheless, one main difficulty of the grid platform is the resource provisioning. How to find the best resource at a given time and the best amount of theses resources? The answer should come from the middleware designed with an efficient scheduler. Moreover the middleware can give a transparent access to a distributed and heterogeneous platform as a Grid. We used DIET,we will see how it schedule a huge number of computation requests according to the data management.

Abstract: In this report, we study the problem of optimizing the throughput of applications for heterogeneous platforms subject to failures. The considered applications are composed of a sequence of consecutive tasks linked as a linear graph (pipeline), with a type associated to each task. The challenge is to specialize the machines of a target platform to process only one task type, given that every machine is able to process all the types before being specialized, to avoid costly context or setup changes. Each instance can thus be performed by any machine specialized in its type and the workload of the system can be shared among a set of specialized machines. For identical machines, we prove that an optimal solution can be computed in polynomial time. However, the problem becomes NP-hard when two machines can compute the same task type at different speeds. Several polynomial time heuristics are presented for the most realistic specialized settings. Experimental results show that the best heuristics obtain a good throughput, much better than the throughput obtained with a random mapping, and close to the optimal throughput in the particular cases on which the optimal throughput can be computed.; Dans ce rapport, nous étudions le problème de l'optimisation du débit d'applications de type pipeline dans un environnement hétérogène sujet à des pannes. Les applications sont constituées d'un ensemble de tâches consécu\-tives typées et organisées selon une chaîne linéaire ou pipeline. Le but est ici de spécialiser les machines de la plate-forme d'exécution afin qu'elles ne traitent qu'un seul type de tâches, sachant qu'au départ elles peuvent exécuter tous les types. Cela permet d'éviter des reconfigurations coûteuses entre tâches de types différents sur une même machine. Ainsi, les instances d'une même tâche peuvent être distribuées sur plusieurs machines spécialisées pour le type de cette tâche, ce qui permet une répartition de la charge du système sur un ensemble de machines spécialisées. Lorsque la plate-forme est composée de machines identiques, nous prouvons qu'une solution optimale peut être trouvée en temps polynomial. Par contre, le problème devient NP-complet dès lors que deux machines peuvent traiter une même tâche à des vitesses différentes. Ce faisant, plusieurs heuristiques sont présentées dans le cas le plus réaliste d'un système spécialisé. Les résultats expérimentaux montrent que les meilleures heuristiques obtiennent de bons résultats en terme de débit, meilleurs qu'avec une allocation aléatoire, et que les débits atteints sont très proches des débits optimaux dans les cas particuliers pour lesquels une solution optimale peut être calculée.

Abstract: In this paper, we investigate how to compute the throughput of probabilistic and replicated streaming applications. We are given (i) a streaming application whose dependence graph is a linear chain; (ii) a one-to-many mapping of the application onto a fully heterogeneous target, where a processor is assigned at most one application stage, but where a stage can be replicated onto a set of processors; and (iii) a set of I.I.D. (Independent and Identically-Distributed) variables to model each computation and communication time in the mapping. How can we compute the throughput of the application, i.e., the rate at which data sets can be processed? We consider two execution models, the STRICT model where the actions of each processor are sequentialized, and the OVERLAP model where a processor can compute and communicate in parallel. The problem is easy when application stages are not replicated, i.e., assigned to a single processor: in that case the throughput is dictated by the critical hardware resource. However, when stages are replicated, i.e., assigned to several processors, the problem becomes surprisingly complicated: even in the deterministic case, the optimal throughput may be lower than the smallest internal resource throughput. To the best of our knowledge, the problem has never been considered in the probabilistic case. The first main contribution of the paper is to provide a general method to compute the throughput when mapping parameters are constant or follow I.I.D. exponential laws. The second main contribution is to provide bounds for the throughput when stage parameters are arbitrary I.I.D. and N.B.U.E. (New Better than Used in Expectation) variables: the throughput is bounded from below by the exponential case and bounded from above by the deterministic case.

Abstract: International audience; We consider pipelined real-time systems that consist of a chain of tasks executing on a distributed platform. The processing of the tasks is pipelined: each processor executes only one interval of consecutive tasks. We are interested in minimizing both the input-output latency and the period of application mapping. For dependability reasons, we are also interested in maximizing the reliability of the system. We therefore assign several processors to each interval of tasks, so as to increase the reliability of the system. Both processors and communication links are unreliable and subject to transient failures. We assume that the arrival of the failures follows a constant parameter Poisson law, and that the failures are statistically independent events. We study several variants of this multiprocessor mapping problem, with several hypotheses on the target platform (homogeneous/heterogeneous speeds and/or failure rates). We provide NP-hardness complexity results, and optimal mapping algorithms for polynomial problem instances. Efficient heuristics are presented to solve the general case, and experimental results are provided.
