Abstract This study investigated the adsorption of Oxytetracycline (OTC) from pharmaceutical wastewater using a kappa carrageenan based hydrogel (KPB). The aim of the present study was to explore the potential of KPB for long-term pharmaceutical wastewater treatment. A sustainable adsorbent was developed to address oxytetracycline (OTC) contamination. The hydrogel’s structural and adsorption characteristics were examined using various techniques like Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and kinetic models. The results revealed considerable changes in the vibrational modes and adsorption bands of the hydrogel, suggesting the effective functionalization of Bentonite nano-clay. Kappa carrageenan based hydrogel achieved the maximum removal (98.5%) of OTC at concerntration of 40 mg/L, pH 8, cotact time of 140 min and adsorbent dose of 0.1 g (KPB-3). Adsorption of OTC increased up to 99% with increasing initial concentrations. The study achieved 95% adsorption capacity for OTC using a KPB film at a concentration of 20 mg/L and a 0.1 g adsorbent dose within 60 min. It also revealed that chemisorptions processes outperform physical adsorption. The Pseudo-Second-Order model, which emphasized the importance of chemical adsorption in the removal process, is better suited to represent the adsorption behavior. Excellent matches were found that R2 = 0.99 for KPB-3, R2 = 0.984 for KPB-2 and R2 = 0.989 for KPB-1 indicated strong chemical bonding interactions. Statisctical analysis (ANOVA) was performed using SPSS (version 25) and it was found that pH and concentration had significant influence on OTC adsorption by the hydrogel, with p-values less than 0.05. The study identified that a Kappa carrageenan-based hydrogel with bentonite nano-clay and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) can efficiently remove OTC from pharmaceutical effluent, with a p-value of 0.054, but weak positive linear associations with pH, temperature, and contact time. This research contributed to sustainable wastewater treatment and environmental engineering.

Abstract Present study assessed the growth of two plant species and ion uptake by them grown on different proportion of industrial solid waste and garden soil. The industrial waste having high concentration of chemicals were used with garden soil at different proportion i.e. 0% (T0), 5% (T1), 10% (T2), 15% (T3) and 20% (T4). Two species namely Conocarpus erectus (alien plant) and Dodonaea viscosa (indigenous) were used as test plants in pot study. Different parameters including growth, physiology, and anatomy of plants and concentration of cations (Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+) in the plant shoot and root were measured at different time duration (initial, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th month). The key objective of the study was to use these plants to establish their plantations on the barren lands where industrial solid wastes were being disposed of. C. erectus showed better growth than D. viscosa, as well as more uptake of ions. A significant increase in plant growth was observed in fourth month in T1, where plant height reached 24.5% and 46% for C. erectus and D. viscosa, respectively. At harvest, in C. erectus, no significant difference in the fresh (65–78 g) and dry weight (24–30 g) of the shoot was observed across treatments compared to the control. In D. viscosa, at the time of harvest, the fresh and dry weights of the root and shoot showed a strong, significantly decreasing pattern across T1, T2, and T3, leading to the death of the plant at T3 and T4. Further, optimum ratio of waste soil to garden soil was found as 10:90 and 20:80 to establish the plantations of D. viscosa and C. erectus, respectively in areas where such solid waste from industries are disposed. Findings can be used for the restoration of such solid waste for the sustainable management of industrial areas and their associated ecosystems.

Abstract The aim of the present study was to assess the drinking water quality in the selected urban areas of Lahore and to comprehend the public health status by addressing the basic drinking water quality parameters. Total 50 tap water samples were collected from groundwater in the two selected areas of district Lahore i.e., Gulshan-e-Ravi (site 1) and Samanabad (site 2). Water samples were analyzed in the laboratory to elucidate physico-chemical parameters including pH, turbidity, temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), total hardness, magnesium hardness, and calcium hardness. These physico-chemical parameters were used to examine the Water Quality Index (WQI) and Synthetic Pollution Index (SPI) in order to characterize the water quality. Results of th selected physico-chemical parameters were compared with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines to determine the quality of drinking water. A GIS-based approach was used for mapping water quality, WQI, and SPI. Results of the present study revealed that the average value of temperature, pH, and DO of both study sites were within the WHO guidelines of 23.5 °C, 7.7, and 6.9 mg/L, respectively. The TDS level of site 1 was 192.56 mg/L (within WHO guidelines) and whereas, in site 2 it was found 612.84 mg/L (higher than WHO guidelines), respectively. Calcium hardness of site 1 and site 2 was observed within the range from 25.04 to 65.732 mg/L but, magnesium hardness values were higher than WHO guidelines. The major reason for poor water quality is old, worn-out water supply pipelines and improper waste disposal in the selected areas. The average WQI was found as 59.66 for site 1 and 77.30 for site 2. Results showed that the quality of the water was classified as “poor” for site 1 and “very poor “ for site 2. There is a need to address the problem of poor water quality and also raise the public awareness about the quality of drinking water and its associated health impacts.

Abstract The current research focuses on the development of Ag–ZnO heterostructures through a “bottom-up” approach involving the assembly and extraction of Aloe barbadensis Miller gel. These heterostructures composed of metals/semiconductor oxide display distinct and notable optical, electrical, magnetic, and chemical properties that are not found in single constituents and also exhibit photocatalytic applications. These synthesized heterostructures were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, and UV–visible spectroscopy. The high peak intensity of the Ag/ZnO composite shows the high crystallinity. The presence of Ag–O, Zn–O, and O–H bonding is verified using FTIR analysis. SEM analysis indicated the formation of spherical shapes of Ag/ZnO heterostructures. The Zn, O, and Ag elements are further confirmed by EDX analysis. Ag–ZnO heterostructures exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity and stability against the degradation of tubantin red 8BL dye under visible light irradiation.

Cytochrome P450 is a heme-containing superfamily accountable for the oxidation of various pharmacologically active drugs. The aim of this study was to conduct in silico and in vitro activity assessments of recently synthesized pyrrole-based compounds against three major CYP450 isoforms – CYP1A2, CYP2D6 and CYP3A4. The in vitro study contained specific cytochrome P450 isoform inhibitors and substrates (for CYP1A2, CYP2D6, and CYP3A4) to determine the inhibition performance of the tile compounds at 1 µM concentration. The in vitro data showed that none of the implemented molecules (MI_a-e and MII_a-e) are capable of inhibiting neither of the CYP isoforms. In addition, the potential interactions of the title compounds and the evaluated CYP isoforms were displayed after molecular docking with Glide (Schrödinger). Induced-fit simulations and binding free energy (MM/GBSA) calculations were applied to elucidate the accessibility in each CYP isoform. None of the pyrrole-based compounds exerted significant inhibition towards the applied isoenzymes. Two of the best scored compounds were visualized in the active site of CYP3A4 (PDB: 2V0M). Overall, good correlation between the in vitro results and the free binding MM/GBSA recalculations was observed.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of adult patients followed up for hydatid cysts disease. Method: Patients over the age of 18 years who were diagnosed with hydatid disease, between January 2015 and September 2021 were included in the study. The clinical, laboratory and radiologic characteristics of the patients were evaluated retrospectively. Results: The study included 66 patients. 59.1% of the patients were female and the mean age was 40.9±15.60 years. The most common presenting symptom was abdominal pain (42.4%). The most common sites of involvement were the liver (78.8%) and lung (18.2%). The majority of patients had solitary cysts (84.8%). The most common finding in laboratory tests was elevated total IgE (74.1%). The indirect hemagglutination (IHA) test was positive in 77.4% of the patients tested. Conclusion: In our study, it was concluded that hydatid cysts are most commonly seen in the liver, often with single organ involvement, and that elevated total IgE in laboratory diagnosis may be helpful in the diagnosis of hydatid cyst disease, although it does not make a definitive diagnosis.

The detection of pyrrole rings in numerous organic compounds with various pharmacological activities, emphasizes its huge importance in medicinal chemistry. Thus, the synthesis of pyrroles continues to arouse interest and Paal-Knorr condensation is considered to be the main synthetic route. A significant advance has been made since the MW activation was introduced in the organic synthesis which can be confirmed with the rapid growth of the published papers on that topic. Microwave irradiation is gaining popularity since faster reaction time, higher yields, easier work-up and reduced energy input can be achieved. Furthermore, it appears in numerous green chemistry protocols. The aim of the current article was to provide insights into the microwave syntheses of pyrrole derivatives, focusing on the most used synthetic approaches - Paal-Knorr, Clauson-Kaas, Barton-Zard, Hantzsch and others. The article was divided into several sections starting with the principles of the microwave organic synthesis. Thereafter the structure and the main pharmacological effects of the pyrrole derivatives were examined. Subsequently, articles describing the synthesis of pyrroles via Paal-Knorr, Hantzsch, Clauson-Kaas and Barton– Zard were discussed. All the reviewed papers conclude a significant reduction of the reaction times after MW irradiation compared to conventional heating.

The urgent need to address the severe environmental risk posed by chromium-contaminated industrial wastewater necessitates the development of eco-friendly cleanup methodologies. Utilizing the Ficus benghalensis plant extracts, the present study aims to develop green zinc oxide nanoparticles for the removal of Cr metal ions from wastewater. The leaves of Ficus benghalensis, often known as the banyan tree, were used to extract a solution for synthesizing ZnO NPs. These nanoparticles were developed with the goal of efficiently eliminating chromium (Cr) from industrial effluents. Batch studies were carried out to assess the efficiency of these synthesized ZnO NPs in treating leather industrial effluent, with aiming for optimal chromium removal. This involved measuring the nanoparticles' capacity to adsorb Cr ions from wastewater samples by comparing chromium levels before and after treatment. Removal efficiency for Cr was estimated through the batches such as optimization of pH, contact time, initial Cr concentration and sorbent dose of ZnO NPs were of the batches. These synthesized ZnO NPs were found to be successful in lowering chromium levels in wastewater to meet permissible limit. The nanoparticles exhibited their highest absorption capacity, reaching 94 % (46 mg/g) at pH 4, with a contact time of 7 hours with the optimum sorbent dose of 0.6 g/L. Hence, the excellent adsorption capabilities of these nanoparticles, together with their environmentally benign manufacturing technique, provide a long-term and efficient solution for chromium-contaminated wastewater treatment. Its novel nature has the potential to significantly improve the safety and cleanliness of water ecosystems, protecting the both i.e. human health and the environment.

Calcium carbonate nanoparticles (CaCO3) have been found to exhibit unique properties that show their potential to be used in various therapies. Green synthesis of CaCO3 has been progressively gaining ac-ceptance due to its cost-effectiveness and energy-efficient nature. In the current study, different extracts of Ailanthus altissima were used to synthesize the calcium carbonate nanoparticles the synthesis and characterization of CCNPs were confirmed by using Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The antioxidant activities (hydrogen peroxide, phosphomolydbenum, and ferric reducing) of calcium carbonate nanoparticles were affirmed by a good range of percentages of inhibition against free radical scavenging. The antidebate assays of CCNPs were observed by in-vitro and in silico approaches in a range at various concentrations while maximum inhibition occurred. In conclusion, the current study depicted that conjugated CaCO3 with A. altissima has a good potential to cure oxidative stress and Type II diabetes and could be used in the future as biogenic nanomedicine for the treatment of other metabolic diseases.

Virtual screening is emerging as a highly applied technique and gained prominence as widely used method for the search and identification of potential hits, significantly reducing the time needed to discover novel and effective compounds compared to high-throughput screening. Recently, the superiority of simulations with multiple programs compared to a single software docking has been discussed. The aim of this work was to apply consensus docking, molecular mechanics/generalized Born surface area (MM/GBSA) free binding energy recalculations, and in vitro evaluations on an in-house dataset of recently synthesized pyrrole-based hydrazide-hydrazones in the search for novel acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors. Two licensed softwares – GOLD 5.3 and Glide, were employed for the virtual screenings, and several chemotherapeutic potential hits were identified. Furthermore, MM/GBSA free binding energy recalculations were provided to enhance the robustness of the in silico results. The MM/GBSA scores of the top ten pyrrole-based hydrazide-hydrazones were ranging from -60.44 to -70.93 Kcal/mol. Subsequent, in vitro evaluations of the top ranked compounds revealed that 12d exhibited the highest AChE inhibitory activity, with a 55% inhibition rate at a concentration of 10 μM. Moreover, this prominent pyrrole-based AChE inhibitor formed stable complex with the active site of the enzyme. Interactions with the active amino residues Tyr72 and Tyr286 indicated that 12d was located near the peripheral anionic site of the enzyme. Additionally, in silico ADME investigations using QikProp demonstrated that 12d possesses optimal pharmacokinetic properties. In conclusion, this study identified a novel pyrrole-based AChE inhibitor 12d through a combination of computational and experimental findings.

Abstract Physicochemical and phytochemical assessment of leaf mustard (Brassica juncea L.) grown in different agroclimatic conditions is essential to highlight their compositional variability and evaluate the most suitable bunch of agroclimatic and agronomic practices. B. juncea is one of the important leafy vegetables that serve as source of vitamin A and C and iron, and plenty of antioxidants. This in situ research was executed to assess the quality variability of B. juncea grown in different agroecosystems. Leaves’ samples of B. juncea were procured from 15 farmers’ fields exhibiting different agroclimatic conditions i.e., elevation, nutrient management, temperature, irrigation, and tillage practices. Leaves’ samples were subjected to physicochemical and phytochemical analysis, i.e., moisture, pH, TSS, ascorbic acid, carotenoids, phenolics, flavonoids, and antioxidant potential. In the leaves’ samples of B. juncea, the target properties were found to vary significantly (P ≤ 0.05) in different agroclimatic conditions. The moisture content, ascorbic acid, phenolic content, carotenoids, and antioxidants were found in the range of 62.7–79.3%, 74–91 mg/100 g, 49.2–49.2 mg GAE/100 g, 436.3–480 mg β carotene/100 g, 32.7–46.67%, respectively. This study elaborates the significant variation of physicochemical and phytochemical attributes of B. juncea due to the prevailing agroclimatic conditions. This necessitates the appropriate choice of B. juncea concerning its composition and ecological conditions of its cultivation in the prospective health benefits.

Abstract The remediation of pesticides from the environment is one of the most important technology nowadays. Herein, magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles and calcium-doped magnesium oxide (Ca-doped MgO) nanoparticles were synthesized by the co-precipitation method and were used for the degradation of thiamethoxam pesticide in aqueous media. Characterization of the MgO and Ca-doped MgO nanoparticles were performed by XRD, SEM, EDX, and FT-IR analysis to verify the synthesis and variations in chemical composition. The band gap energy and crystalline size of MgO and Ca-doped MgO nanoparticles were found to be 4.8 and 4.7 eV and 33 and 34 nm respectively. The degradation of thiamethoxam was accomplished regarding the impact of catalyst dosage, contact time, temperature, pH, and initial pesticide concentration. The pH study indicates that degradation of thiamethoxam depends on pH and maximum degradation (66%) was obtained at pH 5 using MgO nanoparticles. In contrast, maximum degradation (80%) of thiamethoxam was observed at pH 8 employing Ca-doped MgO nanoparticles. The percentage degradation of thiamethoxam was initially increasing but decreased at higher doses of the catalysts. The degradation of the pesticide was observed to be increased with an increase in contact time while high at room temperature but decreased with a temperature rise. The effect of the initial concertation of pesticide indicates that degradation of pesticide increases at low concentrations but declines at higher concentrations. This research study reveals that doping of MgO nanoparticles with calcium enhanced the degradation of thiamethoxam pesticide in aqueous media.

The main objective of the study was to identify variables and factors affecting Digital Citizenship (DC) in education sector. The study used Preferred Reporting Items for the Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines for achieving the objectives of the study. Moreover, a search strategy was formulated including keywords, inclusion, and exclusion criteria. The researchers initially, retrieved 2192 studies from selected databases (Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Scopus) and manual search. Thirty relevant studies were selected that fulfilled objectives of the study and inclusion criteria. Extracted data was later analyzed qualitatively by using thematic analysis and four factors that affect DC were identified during the process. The most identifiable factors include personal, psychological, technological and information related, and social factors. The study also revealed the most prominent variables (categories) related to these factors. The researchers have learned through literature review that no comprehensive study has been conducted in identifying the factors affecting digital citizenship. The current study recommended the importance of using factors and variables that affect DC in the education sector so that it can help decision makers take into account personal, psychological, technological and social factors while developing information literacy instruction programs for digital citizenship, especially in education sector.

The rivers are severely contaminated by human activities due to its massive outflow and industrial effluents. Three economically significant fish species Sperata seenghala, Wallago attu, and Cyprinus carpio from the river water were selected for the assessment of heavy metals (HMs). The edible part of the collected fish from the river sampling sites were analyzed to determine the metal concentrations and potential health risks to humans. The Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) technique was used to measure HMs including lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), and copper (Cu) for both water and fish samples. Order of HMs in the fish was found as Pb > Cd > Cr. Levels of HMs in all species were found higher than the European Commission (EC) recommended acceptable levels. The metal pollution index (MPI) indicates that W. attu and S. seenghala, two highly consumed fish species, have accumulated HMs in higher concentrations. Wallago attu has the highest bioaccumulation factor (BAF) for both Pb and Cd permissible levels. For adult and children, the Hazard Index (HI) and Targeted Hazard Quotient (THQ) values were less than 1, which indicated that there would be no non-carcinogenic health consequences. Carcinogenic risk (CR) exposure to Pb, Cd, and Cr for all consumers was found to be higher than the permitted limit (10−6-10−4), while children were found more vulnerable than adults in terms of CR values. The study findings identified several sources of contaminants in the area, including agricultural waste, lubricant usage, and electroplating material production dumping near into the river water. Based on the results of the analysis, metal concentrations exceeded the thresholds for carcinogenic health risks, indicating that fish from the area are generally unsafe to consume. Therefore, immediate action must be taken to reduce or prevent the discharge of contaminants into the river. Additionally, regular monitoring of the river's water quality should be conducted to control the contamination of water.

Natural product synthesis is an important area of chemical study having various prospects for medicinal, industrial, and agricultural industry. Grignard reaction was developed as a flexible and necessary tool for the production of complex organic compounds in synthetic procedures. Additionally, the synthetic flexibility of the Grignard reaction facilitates its usage in the construction of more complicated ring frameworks and stereoselective transformations. It has been substantially applied in natural product synthesis, demonstrating its effectiveness in the generation of crucial C-C, C-X bonds and the development of intricate molecular structures. Use of Grignard reaction has been significantly studied towards the synthesis of biologically active natural products such as terpenoids, polyketides, alkaloids and amino acids. This review outlines the numerous instances where Grignard reagents have been exploited in the synthesis of notable natural products since past two years.
