Evaluating datasets in data marketplaces, where the buyer aim to purchase valuable data, is a critical challenge. In this paper, we introduce an innovative task-agnostic data valuation method called PriArTa which is an approach for computing the distance between the distribution of the buyer's existing dataset and the seller's dataset, allowing the buyer to determine how effectively the new data can enhance its dataset. PriArTa is communication-efficient, enabling the buyer to evaluate datasets without needing access to the entire dataset from each seller. Instead, the buyer requests that sellers perform specific preprocessing on their data and then send back the results. Using this information and a scoring metric, the buyer can evaluate the dataset. The preprocessing is designed to allow the buyer to compute the score while preserving the privacy of each seller's dataset, mitigating the risk of information leakage before the purchase. A key feature of PriArTa is its robustness to common data transformations, ensuring consistent value assessment and reducing the risk of purchasing redundant data. The effectiveness of PriArTa is demonstrated through experiments on real-world image datasets, showing its ability to perform privacy-preserving, augmentation-robust data valuation in data marketplaces.

Coding theory plays a crucial role in ensuring data integrity and reliability across various domains, from communication to computation and storage systems. However, its reliance on trust assumptions for data recovery poses significant challenges, particularly in emerging decentralized systems where trust is scarce. To address this, the game of coding framework was introduced, offering insights into strategies for data recovery within incentive-oriented environments. The focus of the earliest version of the game of coding was limited to scenarios involving only two nodes. This paper investigates the implications of increasing the number of nodes in the game of coding framework, particularly focusing on scenarios with one honest node and multiple adversarial nodes. We demonstrate that despite the increased flexibility for the adversary with an increasing number of adversarial nodes, having more power is not beneficial for the adversary and is not detrimental to the data collector, making this scheme sybil-resistant. Furthermore, we outline optimal strategies for the data collector in terms of accepting or rejecting the inputs, and characterize the optimal noise distribution for the adversary.

Electrification of vehicles is a potential way of reducing fossil fuel usage and thus lessening environmental pollution. Electric Vehicles (EVs) of various types for different transport modes (including air, water, and land) are evolving. Moreover, different EV user groups (commuters, commercial or domestic users, drivers) may use different charging infrastructures (public, private, home, and workplace) at various times. Therefore, usage patterns and energy demand are very stochastic. Characterizing and forecasting the charging demand of these diverse EV usage profiles is essential in preventing power outages. Previously developed data-driven load models are limited to specific use cases and locations. None of these models are simultaneously adaptive enough to transfer knowledge of day-ahead forecasting among EV charging sites of diverse locations, trained with limited data, and cost-effective. This article presents a location-based load forecasting of EV charging sites using a deep Multi-Quantile Temporal Convolutional Network (MQ-TCN) to overcome the limitations of earlier models. We conducted our experiments on data from four charging sites, namely Caltech, JPL, Office-1, and NREL, which have diverse EV user types like students, full-time and part-time employees, random visitors, etc. With a Prediction Interval Coverage Probability (PICP) score of 93.62\%, our proposed deep MQ-TCN model exhibited a remarkable 28.93\% improvement over the XGBoost model for a day-ahead load forecasting at the JPL charging site. By transferring knowledge with the inductive Transfer Learning (TL) approach, the MQ-TCN model achieved a 96.88\% PICP score for the load forecasting task at the NREL site using only two weeks of data., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

Fog computing is essentially the expansion of cloud computing towards the network edge, reducing user access time to computing resources and services. Various advantages attribute to fog computing, including reduced latency, and improved user experience. However, user mobility may limit the benefits of fog computing. The displacement of users from one location to another, may increase their distance from a fog server, leading into latency amplification. This would also increase the probability of over utilization of fog servers which are located in popular destinations of mobile edge devices. This creates an unbalanced network of fog devices failing to provide lower makespan and fewer cloud accesses. One solution to maintain latency within an acceptable range is the migration of fog tasks and preserve the distance between the edge devices and the available resources. Although some studies have focused on fog task migration, none of them have considered load balancing in fog nodes. Accordingly, this paper introduces LIMO; an allocation and migration strategy for establishing load balancing in fog networks based on the control loop MAPE (Monitor-Analyze-Plan-Execute) and the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. The periodical migration of tasks for load balancing aims to enhance the system's efficiency. The performance of LIMO has been modeled and evaluated using the Mobfogsim toolkit. The results show that this technique outperforms the state-of-the-art in terms of network resource utilization with 10% improvement. Crime prediction is a widely studied research problem due to its importance in ensuring safety of city dwellers. Starting from statistical and classical machine learning based crime prediction methods, in recent years researchers have focused on exploiting deep learning based models for crime prediction. Deep learning based crime prediction models use complex architectures to capture the latent features in the crime data, and outperform the statistical and classical machine learning based crime prediction methods. However, there is a significant research gap in existing research on the applicability of different models in different real-life scenarios as no longitudinal study exists comparing all these approaches in a unified setting. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive experimental evaluation of all major state-of-the-art deep learning based crime prediction models. Our evaluation provides several key insights on the pros and cons of these models, which enables us to select the most suitable models for different application scenarios. This work presents the use of frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar technology combined with a machine learning model to differentiate between normal and abnormal breath rates. The proposed system non-contactly collects data using FMCW radar, which depends on breath rates. Various support vector machine kernels are used to classify the observed data into normal and abnormal states. Prolonged experiments show good accuracy in breath rate classification, confirming the model's efficacy. Coded computing has emerged as a promising framework for tackling significant challenges in large-scale distributed computing, including the presence of slow, faulty, or compromised servers. In this approach, each worker node processes a combination of the data, rather than the raw data itself. The final result then is decoded from the collective outputs of the worker nodes. However, there is a significant gap between current coded computing approaches and the broader landscape of general distributed computing, particularly when it comes to machine learning workloads. To bridge this gap, we propose a novel foundation for coded computing, integrating the principles of learning theory, and developing a framework that seamlessly adapts with machine learning applications. In this framework, the objective is to find the encoder and decoder functions that minimize the loss function, defined as the mean squared error between the estimated and true values. Facilitating the search for the optimum decoding and functions, we show that the loss function can be upper-bounded by the summation of two terms: the generalization error of the decoding function and the training error of the encoding function. Focusing on the second-order Sobolev space, we then derive the optimal encoder and decoder. We show that in the proposed solution, the mean squared error of the estimation decays with the rate of $\mathcal{O}(S^3 N^{-3})$ and $\mathcal{O}(S^{\frac{8}{5}}N^{\frac{-3}{5}})$ in noiseless and noisy computation settings, respectively, where $N$ is the number of worker nodes with at most $S$ slow servers (stragglers). In the digital age, the prevalence of misleading news headlines poses a significant challenge to information integrity, necessitating robust detection mechanisms. This study explores the efficacy of Large Language Models (LLMs) in identifying misleading versus non-misleading news headlines. Utilizing a dataset of 60 articles, sourced from both reputable and questionable outlets across health, science & tech, and business domains, we employ three LLMs- ChatGPT-3.5, ChatGPT-4, and Gemini-for classification. Our analysis reveals significant variance in model performance, with ChatGPT-4 demonstrating superior accuracy, especially in cases with unanimous annotator agreement on misleading headlines. The study emphasizes the importance of human-centered evaluation in developing LLMs that can navigate the complexities of misinformation detection, aligning technical proficiency with nuanced human judgment. Resilience against stragglers is a critical element of prediction serving systems, tasked with executing inferences on input data for a pre-trained machine-learning model. In this paper, we propose NeRCC, as a general straggler-resistant framework for approximate coded computing. NeRCC includes three layers: (1) encoding regression and sampling, which generates coded data points, as a combination of original data points, (2) computing, in which a cluster of workers run inference on the coded data points, (3) decoding regression and sampling, which approximately recovers the predictions of the original data points from the available predictions on the coded data points. We argue that the overall objective of the framework reveals an underlying interconnection between two regression models in the encoding and decoding layers. We propose a solution to the nested regressions problem by summarizing their dependence on two regularization terms that are jointly optimized. Our extensive experiments on different datasets and various machine learning models, including LeNet5, RepVGG, and Vision Transformer (ViT), demonstrate that NeRCC accurately approximates the original predictions in a wide range of stragglers, outperforming the state-of-the-art by up to 23%.

This research provides an in-depth comprehensive review of the progress of chatbot technology over time, from the initial basic systems relying on rules to today's advanced conversational bots powered by artificial intelligence. Spanning many decades, the paper explores the major milestones, innovations, and paradigm shifts that have driven the evolution of chatbots. Looking back at the very basic statistical model in 1906 via the early chatbots, such as ELIZA and ALICE in the 1960s and 1970s, the study traces key innovations leading to today's advanced conversational agents, such as ChatGPT and Google Bard. The study synthesizes insights from academic literature and industry sources to highlight crucial milestones, including the introduction of Turing tests, influential projects such as CALO, and recent transformer-based models. Tracing the path forward, the paper highlights how natural language processing and machine learning have been integrated into modern chatbots for more sophisticated capabilities. This chronological survey of the chatbot landscape provides a holistic reference to understand the technological and historical factors propelling conversational AI. By synthesizing learnings from this historical analysis, the research offers important context about the developmental trajectory of chatbots and their immense future potential across various field of application which could be the potential take ways for the respective research community and stakeholders.

In this paper, we investigate the problem of transmitting an analog source to a destination over $N$ uses of an additive-white-Gaussian-noise (AWGN) channel, where $N$ is very small (in the order of 10 or even less). The proposed coding scheme is based on representing the source symbol using a novel progressive expansion technique, partitioning the digits of expansion into $N$ ordered sets, and finally mapping the symbols in each set to a real number by applying the reverse progressive expansion. In the last step, we introduce some gaps between the signal levels to prevent the carry-over of the additive noise from propagation to other levels. This shields the most significant levels of the signal from an additive noise, hitting the signal at a less significant level. The parameters of the progressive expansion and the shielding procedure are opportunistically independent of the $\SNR$ so that the proposed scheme achieves a distortion $D$, where $-\log(D)$ is within $O(\log\log(\SNR))$ of the optimal performance for all values of $\SNR$, leading to a channel-agnostic scheme.

Coding theory revolves around the incorporation of redundancy into transmitted symbols, computation tasks, and stored data to guard against adversarial manipulation. However, error correction in coding theory is contingent upon a strict trust assumption. In the context of computation and storage, it is required that honest nodes outnumber adversarial ones by a certain margin. However, in several emerging real-world cases, particularly, in decentralized blockchain-oriented applications, such assumptions are often unrealistic. Consequently, despite the important role of coding in addressing significant challenges within decentralized systems, its applications become constrained. Still, in decentralized platforms, a distinctive characteristic emerges, offering new avenues for secure coding beyond the constraints of conventional methods. In these scenarios, the adversary benefits when the legitimate decoder recovers the data, and preferably with a high estimation error. This incentive motivates them to act rationally, trying to maximize their gains. In this paper, we propose a game theoretic formulation for coding, called the game of coding, that captures this unique dynamic where each of the adversaries and the data collector (decoder) have respective utility functions to optimize. The utility functions reflect the fact that both the data collector and the adversary are interested in increasing the chance of data being recoverable by the data collector. Moreover, the utility functions express the interest of the data collector to estimate the input with lower estimation error, but the opposite interest of the adversary. As a first, still highly non-trivial step, we characterize the equilibrium of the game for the repetition code with a repetition factor of 2 for a wide class of utility functions with minimal assumptions.

Edge storage presents a viable data storage alternative for application vendors (AV), offering benefits such as reduced bandwidth overhead and latency compared to cloud storage. However, data cached in edge computing systems is susceptible to intentional or accidental disturbances. This paper proposes a decentralized integrity auditing scheme to safeguard data integrity and counter the traditional reliance on centralized third-party auditors (TPA), which are unfit for distributed systems. Our novel approach employs edge servers (ES) as mutual auditors, eliminating the need for a centralized entity. This decentralization minimizes potential collusion with malicious auditors and biases in audit outcomes. Using a strategic game model, we demonstrate that ESs are more motivated to audit each other than TPAs. The auditing process is addressed as a Nash Equilibrium problem, assuring accurate integrity proof through incentives for ESs. Our scheme's security and performance are rigorously assessed, showing it is secure within the random oracle model, offers improved speed, and is cost-effective compared to existing methods.

This literature review covers the research and thought process that went into making a solution for the infinite scrolling problem faced in streaming services such as Netflix.
