Organophosphate (OPPs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are the two predominant forms of pesticides extensively used all around the world and are being reconsidered as environmental pollutants. The current study sought to assess the role of socioeconomic factors on the level of pesticides residues and the oxidative effects of exposure to OPPs and OCPs among the farmworkers of southeast Iran. In this cross-sectional study, 192 farmworkers and 74 non-farmworkers (controls) were involved. Gas chromatography (GC) was performed to measure the serum levels of organochlorine chemicals (2,4-DDT, 4,4-DDT, 2,4-DDE, 4,4-DDE, α-HCH, β-HCH, and γ-HCH). Furthermore, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, arylesterase activity of paraoxonase-1 (PON-1), and several oxidative stress (OS) markers were assessed. In addition, the impact of several parameters such as home to farm distance, education level, ventilation status, and personal protective equipment (PPE) on pesticide levels was analyzed. The levels of OCPs in the farmworkers were significantly higher than the control subjects. In addition, AChE activity, arylesterase activity of PON-1, and total antioxidant capacity in farmworkers were significantly less, and MDA levels were higher than the controls. Education level was associated with farmworkers’ protective behavior. The current findings suggested that some phased out OCPs can still be measured in human samples in the southeast of Iran. Furthermore, the current study demonstrated that exposure to OCPs and OPPs was accompanied by adverse consequences regarding OS parameters and subsequent health problems. In addition, the findings of the present study suggest that improving farmworkers’ education might be associated with reduced exposure to pesticides and less adverse health effects.

Background: Due to the increasing prevalence of cancer and the inadequacy of current therapies, the development of novel antitumor pharmaceutics with higher efficacies and lower adverse effects is considered a fundamental tenet of contemporary cancer management. Poly-Ethylene-Glycol (PEG) attachment is a novel pharmaceutical technology to improve the efficacy and safety of chemotherapies. Etirinotecan Pegol (EP), also known as NKTR-102, is the PEGylated form of Irinotecan (CPT-11), which causes cancer cell apoptosis by inhibiting the topoisomerase I enzyme. Objectives: The present study reviews and evaluates various reports of the EP’s anti-tumor activity in various cancers. Data Sources: Studies were identified using the Scopus database, with no exclusions. The search terms included Etirinotecan Pegol and NKTR-102, which yielded 125 articles (66 and 59 articles, respectively). In addition, the clinicaltrials.gov website was used to find ongoing studies, which resulted in the addition of two studies. Study Eligibility Criteria: Subsequently, we excluded studies that were published in languages other than English, duplicate articles, and studies with no data. Results: This systematic review clarifies that EP possesses numerous advantages over many other medications, such as safety, efficacy, increased half-life, increased health-related quality of life, increased overall survival, increased progression-free survival, and decreasing the adverse events in the treatment of various cancers. Conclusion: Therefore, Etirinotecan Pegol may represent a major contribution to the treatment of various cancers in the future.

The etiology of female infertility includes a variety of causes, all of which could be induced by environmental pollutants. Organophosphates (OPs) are major constituents of pollutants that cause infertility in aquatic and terrestrial organisms. However, no study has comprehensively reviewed the female fertility-related consequences of exposure to OPs. In this study, the reviewed studies revealed that OPs exposure could elicit detrimental alterations in organ histomorphology, sex hormone levels, and related signaling pathways. Furthermore, preconceptional exposure was associated with poor pregnancy outcomes, where prenatal exposure negatively impacted newborn health. Therefore, it is necessary to restrict the current widespread application of OPs or to alter their chemical structure so not to negatively impact female fertility.

Background and Aims The present systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the effect of cinnamon supplementation on blood pressure and anthropometric indices in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library were systematically searched to find relevant records up to 22 August 2019. Standard mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to evaluate the effect of cinnamon supplementation on the outcomes of this study. In the case of heterogeneity, fixed and random effect models were used. The obtained data were analyzed by Stata 13. After excluding irrelevant records, 9 eligible articles were included. Results This meta-analysis found a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (SBP) (SMD: -0.532, 95% CI: [-1.032, -0.033], P = 0.037) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (SMD: -0.681, 95% CI: [-1.297, -0.065], P = 0.030) of patients with type 2 diabetes following cinnamon supplementation. Based on the results of the present study, cinnamon supplementation had no significant effect on the body weight (BW) (SMD: -0.309, 95% CI: [-0.793, 0.175], P = 0.211), body mass index (BMI) (SMD: -0.550, 95% CI: [-1.244, 0.144], P = 0.120). and waist circumference (WC) (SMD: -0.235, 95% CI: [-0.518, 0.047], P = 0.103). Conclusions Cinnamon supplementation significantly decreased SBP and DBP of patients with type 2 diabetes. Although cinnamon intake caused changes in anthropometric parameters, the observed changes were not statistically significant.

Organophosphates (OPs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are two main types of pesticides that are widely used worldwide, and their toxicities have been reported in high-risk individuals, such as farmers and their wives. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of mentioned pesticides in farmers' wives (FWs) and compare them with the control group; we also aimed to assess the effect of personal health factors on the biochemical parameters. This case-control study was conducted on two FWs and control groups, consisting of 124 and 62 individuals, respectively. Serum levels of OCPs were measured using gas chromatography (GC) method. In addition, the activity of acetylcholine esterase (AChE), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and serum levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) were evaluated in all participants. Additionally, the observance of personal health guidelines was assessed. Serum levels of OCPs in the FWs group were significantly higher than the controls. In addition, AChE activity in FWs was significantly lower than the controls. Moreover, it was found that higher levels of education lead to a better observation of most individual health guidelines, which results in reducing the biological adverse effects of pesticides. The results of this study indicated that the use of OCPs, as an illegal pesticide with known toxic and carcinogenic effects, has spread to southern Iran, which may have biological toxic effects. Also, observing the personal health points significantly reduced these complications and it is, therefore, recommended that more attention should be paid to this issue.
