Knowledge of the groundwater potential, especially in an arid region, can play a major role in planning the sustainable management of groundwater resources. In this study, nine machine learning (ML) algorithms—namely, Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Decision Jungle (DJ), Averaged Perceptron (AP), Bayes Point Machine (BPM), Decision Forest (DF), Locally-Deep Support Vector Machine (LD-SVM), Boosted Decision Tree (BDT), Logistic Regression (LG), and Support Vector Machine (SVM)—were run on the Microsoft Azure cloud computing platform to model the groundwater potential. We investigated the relationship between 512 operating boreholes with a specified specific capacity and 14 groundwater-influencing occurrence factors. The unconfined aquifer in the Nineveh plain, Mosul Governorate, northern Iraq, was used as a case study. The groundwater-influencing factors used included elevation, slope, curvature, topographic wetness index, stream power index, soil, land use/land cover (LULC), geology, drainage density, aquifer saturated thickness, aquifer hydraulic conductivity, aquifer specific yield, depth to groundwater, distance to faults, and fault density. Analysis of the contribution of these factors in groundwater potential using information gain ratio indicated that aquifer saturated thickness, rainfall, hydraulic conductivity, depth to groundwater, specific yield, and elevation were the most important factors (average merit > 0.1), followed by geology, fault density, drainage density, soil, LULC, and distance to faults (average merit < 0.1). The average merits for the remaining factors were zero, and thus, these factors were removed from the analysis. When the selected ML classifiers were used to estimate groundwater potential in the Azure cloud computing environment, the DJ and BDT models performed the best in terms of all statistical error measures used (accuracy, precision, recall, F-score, and area under the receiver operating characteristics curve), followed by DF and LD-SVM. The probability of groundwater potential from these algorithms was mapped and visualized into five groundwater potential zones: very low, low, moderate, high, and very high, which correspond to the northern (very low to low), southern (moderate), and middle (high to very high) portions of the study area. Using a cloud computing service provides an improved platform for quickly and cheaply running and testing different algorithms for predicting groundwater potential.

On December 5, 2022, an indirect drive fusion implosion on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) achieved a target gain G_{target} of 1.5. This is the first laboratory demonstration of exceeding "scientific breakeven" (or G_{target}>1) where 2.05 MJ of 351 nm laser light produced 3.1 MJ of total fusion yield, a result which significantly exceeds the Lawson criterion for fusion ignition as reported in a previous NIF implosion [H. Abu-Shawareb et al. (Indirect Drive ICF Collaboration), Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 075001 (2022)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.129.075001]. This achievement is the culmination of more than five decades of research and gives proof that laboratory fusion, based on fundamental physics principles, is possible. This Letter reports on the target, laser, design, and experimental advancements that led to this result.

For more than half a century, researchers around the world have been engaged in attempts to achieve fusion ignition as a proof of principle of various fusion concepts. Following the Lawson criterion, an ignited plasma is one where the fusion heating power is high enough to overcome all the physical processes that cool the fusion plasma, creating a positive thermodynamic feedback loop with rapidly increasing temperature. In inertially confined fusion, ignition is a state where the fusion plasma can begin "burn propagation" into surrounding cold fuel, enabling the possibility of high energy gain. While "scientific breakeven" (i.e., unity target gain) has not yet been achieved (here target gain is 0.72, 1.37 MJ of fusion for 1.92 MJ of laser energy), this Letter reports the first controlled fusion experiment, using laser indirect drive, on the National Ignition Facility to produce capsule gain (here 5.8) and reach ignition by nine different formulations of the Lawson criterion.

Abstract Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) continues its significant health and economic impact globally. Despite the success of spike-protein vaccines in preventing severe disease, long-lasting protection against emerging variants and the prevention of breakthrough infections and transmission remain elusive. We generate an intranasal live-attenuated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, CDO-7N-1, using codon deoptimization. CDO-7N-1 shows highly attenuated replication and minimal or no lung pathology in vivo over multiple passages. It induces robust mucosal and systemic neutralizing antibody and T-cell subset responses, in mice (female K18-hACE2 and male HFH4-hACE2 mice), hamsters, and macaques triggered by a single immunization. Mice and hamsters vaccinated with CDO-7N-1 are protected from challenge with wild-type (WT) SARS-CoV-2 and other variants of concern. Serum from vaccinated animals neutralizes WT SARS-CoV-2, variants of concern (beta and delta), variants of interest (omicron XBB.1.5) and SARS-CoV-1. Antibody responses are sustained and enhanced by repeated immunization or infection with WT SARS-CoV-2. Immunity against all SARS-CoV-2 proteins by CDO-7N-1 should improve efficacy against future SARS-CoV-2 variants.

Abstract In present times, Radio‐Frequency Identification (RFID) systems have seen a significant rise in their usage. There has been an increasing interest in developing even lighter RFID protocols suitable for resource‐constrained environments. Ensuring security and privacy remain critical challenges in RFID‐based systems. Recently proposed lightweight authentication schemes, namely LRSAS+ and LRARP+, are ideally suited for constrained devices. However, this article investigates these schemes and reveals certain vulnerabilities: LRSAS+ is susceptible to tag impersonation, desynchronization, and traceability attacks, while LRARP+ can fall prey to traceability and secret disclosure attacks. An enhanced version of these authentication systems is proposed that tackles their inherent weaknesses by leveraging the χper function. To verify the security of the proposed scheme, a formal analysis is conducted using Gong–Needham–Yahalom logic (GNY logic) and an automated security protocol verification tool, ProVerif. The improved scheme's effectiveness is also compared with multiple contemporary lightweight systems. The results indicate that the enhanced scheme not only meets the security requirements for lightweight authentication schemes but also achieves this with minimal computational overhead.

Abstract With the substantial increase in the use of stimulants, especially methamphetamine, in recent years, the present study aimed to cluster methamphetamine users based on personality traits and self-efficacy, and compare their mental health, sleep quality, and the risk of relapse in the identified clusters. This cross-sectional study was conducted through convenience sampling on 501 methamphetamine users in addiction treatment centers in Kermanshah, western Iran. The data were collected using the Schwarzer General Self-Efficacy Scale, Zuckerman–Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire, Goldberg and Hiller General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), Zuckerman–Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire, and Stimulant Relapse Risk Scale (SRRS). A total of 501 methamphetamine users were distinguished into three clusters with frequencies of 111 (22.2%), 298 (59.5%), and 92 (18.4%) members through hierarchical cluster analysis. The participants in the first cluster were characterized by low self-efficacy, high neuroticism, sensation seeking, and aggressiveness, along with low extroversion and activity, low positive health, high negative health, low sleep quality, and high risk of drug relapse. The participants in the second cluster reported moderate levels of self-efficacy, neuroticism, sensation seeking, activity, and aggressiveness, high extroversion, and moderate levels of mental health, sleep quality, and the risk of relapse. Moreover, the participants in the third cluster reported the highest level of self-efficacy, the lowest level of neuroticism, sensation seeking, and aggressiveness, moderate extroversion and high activity, low relapse risk, high sleep quality, as well as high positive and low negative health symptoms. The third cluster was significantly different from the other two clusters in terms of the mentioned factors. The findings of this study suggest that low self-efficacy and the presence of neuroticism, sensation seeking, and high aggressiveness contribute to reduced mental health and sleep quality, as well as an increased risk of relapse in methamphetamine users.

Abstract Morbihan's disease is a rare condition characterized by chronic facial edema. While its exact cause is unknown, it is thought to involve local cutaneous vascularization and lymphatic drainage imbalance. Traditional treatment options are often ineffective, and no established efficient treatment exists. We present a case study of a 17‐year‐old male with Morbihan's syndrome who showed resistance to traditional treatments but responded well to a combination of cromolyn sodium nasal spray and oral montelukast after histopathology revealed hyperplasia of plasma cells and mast cells. This combination has not been used before for Morbihan's syndrome. Our review of the literature also provides insight for clinicians seeking to manage this condition.

Abstract Objective Activating mutation in Ubiquitin-specific peptidase (USP8) is identified to enhance cell proliferation and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) secretion from corticotroph pituitary adenoma. We investigated the USP8 variant status in a population of Iranian people with functional corticotroph pituitary adenoma (FCPA). Moreover, a systematic review was conducted to thoroughly explore the role of USP8 variants and the related pathways in corticotroph adenomas, genotype-phenotype correlation in USP8-mutated individuals with FCPA, and the potential role of USP8 and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) as targeted therapies in PFCAs. Methods Genetic analysis of 20 tissue samples from 19 patients with PFCAs was performed using Sanger sequencing. Moreover, a systematic literature review was performed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, web of Sciences, and Cochrane databases were searched. The last search was performed on 20 September 2023 for all databases. Results In our series, we found two somatic mutations including a 7-bp deletion variant: c.2151_2157delCTCCTCC, p. Ser718GlnfsTer3, and a missense variant: c.2159 C > G, p. Pro720Arg (rs672601311) in exon 14. The Systematic review indicated USP8 variant in 35% of corticotroph adenomas, with the highest frequency (25%) in 720 code regions, p. Pro720Arg. Data regarding the impact of USP8 mutational status on clinical characteristics and outcomes in FCPAs are inconsistent. Moreover, Pasireotide as well as inhibitors of EGFR such as Gefitinib and Lapatinib, as well as USP8 inhibitors including -ehtyloxyimino9H-indeno (1, 2-b) pyrazine-2, 3-dicarbonitrile, DUBs-IN-2, and RA-9 indicated promising results in treatment of corticotroph adenomas. Conclusion Although the USP8-EGFR system has been identified as the main trigger and target of corticotroph tumorigenesis, more precise multicenter studies are required to yield more consistent information regarding the phenotype-genotype correlation and to develop effective targeted therapies.

Data temperature is a response to the ever-growing amount of data. These data have to be stored, but they have been observed that only a small portion of the data are accessed more frequently at any one time. This leads to the concept of hot and cold data. Cold data can be migrated away from high-performance nodes to free up performance for higher priority data. Existing studies classify hot and cold data primarily on the basis of data age and usage frequency. We present this as a limitation in the current implementation of data temperature. This is due to the fact that age automatically assumes that all new data have priority and that usage is purely reactive. We propose new variables and conditions that influence smarter decision-making on what are hot or cold data and allow greater user control over data location and their movement. We identify new metadata variables and user-defined variables to extend the current data temperature value. We further establish rules and conditions for limiting unnecessary movement of the data, which helps to prevent wasted input output (I/O) costs. We also propose a hybrid algorithm that combines existing variables and new variables and conditions into a single data temperature. The proposed system provides higher accuracy, increases performance, and gives greater user control for optimal positioning of data within multi-tiered storage solutions.

Background and Aim: Gastric carcinoma (GC) is one of the most common human cancers. Many genes have been analyzed in an attempt to better understand the process of gastric carcinogenesis, however, the underlying mechanism of gastric carcinogenesis is still poorly understood. Dermatopontin (DPT) is an extracellular matrix protein, which regulates multiple physiological processes. The present study aimed to evaluate DPT gene expression in GC. Materials and Methods: Biopsies of 50 surgically-excised GC tissue specimens and corresponding adjacent normal tissues were examined by real-time PCR. Then, using a bioinformatics analysis we determined DPT gene expression in two different cohorts of GC patients. To determine the effect of DPT expression levels on survival outcome, a Kaplan–Meier analysis was performed. For a comprehensive analysis, DPT gene expression was evaluated in 16 different cancers. Results: RT-PCR demonstrated that DPT gene expression was decreased in gastric cancer tissues, compared to that in the normal stomach tissues. Mean DPT expression value was significantly lower in different stages of GC. Further, survival analysis revealed that the mRNA expression of DPT is positively correlated with overall survival of GC patients. A relationship was found between DPT expression and primary size of tumor. Pan-cancer analysis in 16 tumor types showed that DPT expression was lower in tumor tissue than in the adjacent normal tissue. Conclusion: These findings suggested that the decrease in DPT gene expression in gastric tissue may play an important role in gastric carcinogenesis.

The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of meaning centered therapy and unit-oriented therapy on resilience and quality of life in leukemia patients. The research method was pragmatic in nature with regard to its objective. In terms of data collection, it followed a semi-experimental design comprising a control group and a pre-test-post-test-follow-up phase. The statistical population for this research comprised all leukemia patients referred to Mahyar Charity in Tehran during 2019 and 2020. A random sample of 60 patients was drawn from this population, and they were subsequently assigned into two experimental groups and one control group, with age and gender homogenization. Participants for pre-test, post-test and follow-up responded to the Back Anxiety Inventory (BAI); the Quality-of-Life Questionnaire-Core 30 (QLQ-C30) and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). The participants of the first experimental group underwent 7 sessions of 90 minutes of meaning centered therapy and the participants of the second experimental group underwent 7 sessions of 90 minutes of unit-oriented therapy. Analysis of variance with repeated measures and SPSS-24 software were used to analyze the data. On the component of emotional quality of life, the present study found a statistically significant difference between the efficacy of meaning-centered therapy and unity-oriented therapy (P=0.001). Regarding resilience, there was no statistically significant distinction between meaning-centered therapy and unit-oriented treatment (P=0.635).

Background: As the use of electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets, and computers continues to rise globally, concerns have been raised about their potential impact on human health. Exposure to high energy visible (HEV) blue light, emitted from digital screens, particularly the so-called artificial light at night (ALAN), has been associated with adverse health effects, ranging from disruption of circadian rhythms to cancer. Breast cancer incidence rates are also increasing worldwide.Objective: This study aimed at finding a correlation between breast cancer and exposure to blue light from mobile phone.Material and Methods: In this retrospective matched case-control study, we aimed to investigate whether exposure to blue light from mobile phone screens is associated with an increased risk of female breast cancer. We interviewed 301 breast cancer patients (cases) and 294 controls using a standard questionnaire and performed multivariate analysis, chi-square, and Fisher’s exact tests for data analysis.Results: Although heavy users in the case group of our study had a statistically significant higher mean 10-year cumulative exposure to digital screens compared to the control group (7089±14985 vs 4052±12515 hours, respectively, P=0.038), our study did not find a strong relationship between exposure to HEV and development of breast cancer. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that heavy exposure to HEV blue light emitted from mobile phone screens at night might constitute a risk factor for promoting the development of breast cancer, but further large-scale cohort studies are warranted.

Abstract Background To investigate the genetics of early-onset progressive cerebellar ataxia in Iran, we conducted a study at the Children’s Medical Center (CMC), the primary referral center for pediatric disorders in the country, over a three-year period from 2019 to 2022. In this report, we provide the initial findings from the national registry. Methods We selected all early-onset patients with an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance to assess their phenotype, paraclinical tests, and genotypes. The clinical data encompassed clinical features, the Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA) scores, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) results, Electrodiagnostic exams (EDX), and biomarker features. Our genetic investigations included single-gene testing, Whole Exome Sequencing (WES), and Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS). Results Our study enrolled 162 patients from various geographic regions of our country. Among our subpopulations, we identified known and novel pathogenic variants in 42 genes in 97 families. The overall genetic diagnostic rate was 59.9%. Notably, we observed PLA2G6, ATM, SACS, and SCA variants in 19, 14, 12, and 10 families, respectively. Remarkably, more than 59% of the cases were attributed to pathogenic variants in these genes. Conclusions Iran, being at the crossroad of the Middle East, exhibits a highly diverse genetic etiology for autosomal recessive hereditary ataxia. In light of this heterogeneity, the development of preventive strategies and targeted molecular therapeutics becomes crucial. A national guideline for the diagnosis and management of patients with these conditions could significantly aid in advancing healthcare approaches and improving patient outcomes.

Background. To investigate the impact of intrapatient variability (IPV) in the levels of immunosuppressant drugs on health outcomes after liver transplantation. Methods. A comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted, examining literature from MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Reviews, and Cochrane CENTRAL. Results. The analysis focused on acute rejection, graft survival, acute kidney injury, and cancer risk as health outcomes. Of 2901 articles screened, 10 met the inclusion criteria. The results indicate a 19% reduction in the risk of acute rejection in patients with lower IPV (RR = 0.81; 95% confidence interval, 0.66-0.99), although 6 studies found no significant association between high IPV and acute rejection. Contrasting results were observed for graft survival, with 1 study indicating worse outcomes for high IPV, whereas another reported no significant difference. High IPV was consistently associated with acute kidney injury across 3 studies. One study suggested a link between high IPV and hepatocellular carcinoma, although a meta-analysis for these outcomes was not feasible. Conclusions. These findings point to a marginal but statistically significant association between high IPV and an increased risk of acute rejection, highlighting the importance of precise management of immunosuppressive drugs in liver transplant recipients to enhance patient outcomes.

The very virulent infectious bursal disease virus (vvIBDV) induces an acute, highly contagious and immunosuppressive disease in younger chicken causing massive economic losses globally. A major challenge in the field’s clinical diagnosis is distinguishing gross lesions caused by vvIBDV from those induced by classic IBDV (cIBDV), commonly used as live attenuated vaccines. This study introduces a one-step multiplex real-time PCR assay designed to distinguish between vvIBDV and non-vvIBDV viruses. Via simultaneously targeting the VP2 sequence for vvIBDV detection and the VP1 sequence for non-vvIBDV identification, including classic, American variant and the recently emerged novel variant IBDV (nvarIBDV), the assay’s specificity was validated against common avian viral diseases and nonspecific IBDV strains without any observed cross-reactions. It effectively differentiated between vvIBDV and non-vvIBDV field samples, including nvarIBDV, as confirmed by genotyping based on VP2 sequencing. The assay demonstrated a limit of detection ranging from 1.9×1010 to 103 DNA copies for vvIBDV-VP2, 9.2×1010 to 103 DNA copies for classic strains, and 1.2×1011 to 104 DNA copies for nvarIBDV in VP1 detection of non-vvIBDV. In conclusion, this study presents a specific, sensitive, and straight forward multiplex real-time PCR assay.

Abstract Nonviral vectors, such as liposomes, offer potential for targeted gene delivery in cancer therapy. Liposomes, composed of phospholipid vesicles, have demonstrated efficacy as nanocarriers for genetic tools, addressing the limitations of off‐targeting and degradation commonly associated with traditional gene therapy approaches. Due to their biocompatibility, stability, and tunable physicochemical properties, they offer potential in overcoming the challenges associated with gene therapy, such as low transfection efficiency and poor stability in biological fluids. Despite these advancements, there remains a gap in understanding the optimal utilization of nanoliposomes for enhanced gene delivery in cancer treatment. This review delves into the present state of nanoliposomes as carriers for genetic tools in cancer therapy, sheds light on their potential to safeguard genetic payloads and facilitate cell internalization alongside the evolution of smart nanocarriers for targeted delivery. The challenges linked to their biocompatibility and the factors that restrict their effectiveness in gene delivery are also discussed along with exploring the potential of nanoliposomes in cancer gene therapy strategies by analyzing recent advancements and offering future directions.

Polymer-modified concrete and mortars are widely used with different purposes in precast concrete and prestressed concrete structural elements, bridge decks, buildings, and repair requirements because of their significant behavior under different conditions, such as durability against freezing and thawing, ability to absorb impact loads and good mechanical properties compared to ordinary concretes. This study aims to improve some mechanical properties of cement mortar by using styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) latex, a superplasticizer, and also decreasing the absorption level to lower values by using these two admixtures. The study shows that using 10% SBR by weight of cement increases the compressive strength from 28.6 to 30.8 MPa and decreases the absorption from 2.3 to 1.7% which gives durability for cement mortar. This study also shows the development in strength achieved by using SBR superplasticizer simultaneously, and absorption decreases to only 0.76% for 10% SBR mixes. In comparison, it was 1.75% for mixes with SBR only.

BackgroundPsychopathology research mainly focused on the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between personality and psychiatric disorders without considering the moment-to-moment dynamics of personality in response to environmental situations. The present study aimed to both cluster a young sample according to three mixed clinical conditions (poor sleep quality, depression, and somatization) and to predict the derived clusters by maladaptive personality traits and sex differences using a deep machine learning approach.MethodsA sample of 839 adults aged 18-40 years (64% female) from the west of Iran were clustered according to the mixed clinical conditions using the cluster analysis techniques. An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) modeling is used to predict the derived clusters by maladaptive personality traits and biological gender. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to identify independent variables with high sensitivity specific to the derived clusters.ResultsThe cluster analysis techniques suggested a fully stable and acceptable four-cluster solution for Depressed Poor Sleepers, Nonclinical Good Sleepers, Subclinical Poor Sleepers, and Clinical Poor Sleepers. The ANN model led to the identification of one hidden layer with two hidden units. The results of Area under the ROC Curve were relatively to completely acceptable, ranging from.726 to.855. Anhedonia, perceptual dysregulation, depressivity, anxiousness, and unusual beliefs are the most valuable traits with importance higher than 70%.ConclusionThe machine learning approach can be well used to predict mixed clinical conditions by maladaptive personality traits. Future research can test the complexity of normal personality traits connected to mixed clinical conditions.

Losses in electric machines produce heat and cause an efficiency drop. As a consequence of heat production, temperature rise will occur which imposes severe problems. Due to the dependence of electrical and mechanical performance on temperature, conducting thermal analysis for a special electric machine that has a compact configuration with poor heat dissipation capability is crucial. This paper aims to carry out the thermal analysis of an axial-field flux-switching permanent magnet (AFFSPM) machine for electric vehicle application. To fulfill this purpose, three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis is performed to accurately derive electromagnetic losses in active components. Meanwhile, copper losses are calculated by analytic correlation in maximum allowable temperature. To improve thermal performance, cooling blades are inserted on the frame of AFFSPM, and 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is developed to investigate thermal analysis. The effect of different housing materials, the external heat transfer coefficient, and various operating points on the components' temperature has been reported. Finally, 3-D FEA is used to conduct heat flow path and heat generation density.

Introduction: Paraganglioma of the urinary bladder (PUB) is an extremely rare extra-adrenal catecholamine-secreting neuroendocrine tumor, accounting for only 0.05% of all bladder tumors and 1% of all pheochromocytomas. The clinical presentation of PUB can be diverse and challenging to diagnose. Case Presentation: This case report presents a 37-year-old man with post-micturition palpitation, headache, and sweating, with no history of hematuria or other irritative urinary symptoms. Ultrasound and contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a suspicious mass in the right posterolateral wall of the urinary bladder. Despite normal functional hormonal tests, the diagnosis of PUB was confirmed after surgical enucleation and histopathological examination. Conclusion: This report emphasizes the importance of considering PUB as a differential diagnosis in patients with post-micturition symptoms and paroxysmal hypertension, as well as the need for a multidisciplinary approach in the evaluation and management of such rare and complex cases. Early recognition and surgical intervention are crucial for optimal management and favorable clinical outcomes.

Background: It is well known that stretch training can induce prolonged increases in joint range of motion (ROM). However, to date more information is needed regarding which training variables might have greater influence on improvements in flexibility. Thus, the purpose of this meta-analysis was to investigate the effects of stretch training on ROM in healthy participants by considering potential moderating variables, such as stretching technique, intensity, duration, frequency, and muscles stretched, as well as sex-specific, age-specific, and/or trained state-specific adaptations to stretch training. Methods: We searched through PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and SportDiscus to find eligible studies and, finally, assessed the results from 77 studies and 186 effect sizes by applying a random-effect meta-analysis. Moreover, by applying a mixed-effect model, we performed the respective subgroup analyses. To find potential relationships between stretch duration or age and effect sizes, we performed a meta-regression. Results: We found a significant overall effect, indicating that stretch training can increase ROM with a moderate effect compared to the controls (effect size = –1.002; Z = –12.074; 95% confidence interval: –1.165 to –0.840; p < 0.001; I2 = 74.97). Subgroup analysis showed a significant difference between the stretching techniques (p = 0.01) indicating that proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation and static stretching produced greater ROM than did ballistic/dynamic stretching. Moreover, there was a significant effect between the sexes (p = 0.04), indicating that females showed higher gains in ROM compared to males. However, further moderating analysis showed no significant relation or difference. Conclusion: When the goal is to maximize ROM in the long term, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation or static stretching, rather than ballistic/dynamic stretching, should be applied. Something to consider in future research as well as sports practice is that neither volume, intensity, nor frequency of stretching were found to play a significant role in ROM yields.

Abstract Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, and early diagnosis and prompt medical intervention are thus crucial. Frequent monitoring of stroke patients is also essential to assess treatment efficacy and detect complications earlier. While computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are commonly used for stroke diagnosis, they cannot be easily used onsite, nor for frequent monitoring purposes. To meet those requirements, an electromagnetic imaging (EMI) device, which is portable, non-invasive, and non-ionizing, has been developed. It uses a headset with an antenna array that irradiates the head with a safe low-frequency EM field and captures scattered fields to map the brain using a complementary set of physics-based and data-driven algorithms, enabling quasi-real-time detection, two-dimensional localization, and classification of strokes. This study reports clinical findings from the first time the device was used on stroke patients. The clinical results on 50 patients indicate achieving an overall accuracy of 98% in classification and 80% in two-dimensional quadrant localization. With its lightweight design and potential for use by a single para-medical staff at the point of care, the device can be used in intensive care units, emergency departments, and by paramedics for onsite diagnosis.

Abstract Background and objective Oropharyngeal interventions are an accepted method to improve the nutritional performance of premature infants. Considering the countless benefits of breast milk and the few studies on the use of breast milk as an oral-pharyngeal intervention, this study was conducted with the aim of determining the effect of oral-pharyngeal administration of breast milk on nutritional outcomes in premature infants. Materials and methods In this clinical trial, 80 premature infants hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit of Amir al-Mu’minin Hospital in Semnan (a city in Iran) were randomly assigned to intervention (n = 40) and control groups (n = 40). Infants in the intervention group were given breast milk, and infants in the control group were given sterile water as a placebo. The data collection tool included demographic and clinical questions checklist, including sex, gestational age, weight, milk administration time, lavage and its amount, vomiting, abdominal distension, and so on. The emergence of RNA modifications has recently been considered as critical post-transcriptional regulations which governed gene expression. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification is the most abundant type of RNA modification which is mediated by three distinct classes of proteins called m6A writers, readers, and erasers. Accumulating evidence has been made in understanding the role of m6A modification of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) in cancer. Importantly, aberrant expression of ncRNAs and m6A regulators has been elucidated in various cancers. As the key role of ncRNAs in regulation of cancer hallmarks is well accepted now, it could be accepted that m6A modification of ncRNAs could affect cancer progression. The present review intended to discuss the latest knowledge and importance of m6A epigenetic regulation of ncRNAs including mircoRNAs, long non-coding RNAs, and circular RNAs, and their interaction in the context of cancer. Moreover, the current insight into the underlying mechanisms of therapy resistance and also immune response and escape mediated by m6A regulators and ncRNAs are discussed.

Background: There are few reports evaluating different factors, including the severity of duodenal histopathological findings and serological levels of celiac disease (CD), in increasing the probability of thyroid diseases (TD) in adults and children with CD, so, we designed this research. Methods: CD was defined as Marsh type 2 or higher in duodenal histopathology and serological levels of anti-transglutaminase antibodies (anti-tTG) equal to or greater than 18 IU/ml. To assess the likelihood of TD in CD patients, logistic regression analysis was employed. Results: 538 patients were included in this study. Of these, 354 (65.8%) were females and 184 (34.2%) were males. 370 (68.8%) patients were children. Overall, 57 (10.6%) patients had TD, of which 49 (9.1%) had hypothyroidism and 8 (1.5%) had hyperthyroidism. Adults had a significantly higher probability of developing TD than children (OR 1.9; 95% CI 1.1-3.4; P = 0.03). The odds of developing TD were also significantly higher in patients with family marriage in parents (OR 2.3; 95% CI 1.1-4.7; P = 0.03). Other variables such as gastrointestinal symptoms, anti-tTG levels, and severity of Marsh classification did not exhibit a substantial rise in the likelihood of TD development. Conclusion: The study findings indicated that the likelihood of developing TD in CD patients can be linked to advancing age and having family marriage in parents, while there was no significant association observed with anti-tTG levels, severity of histological damage, and gastrointestinal symptoms.

Moisturizers are cosmetic compounds designed to increase the moisture content of the skin. There are many types of these products in the market making it difficult for consumers to select the most effective moisturizer according to their age and gender. Hence, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different moisturizers on skin hydration as well as to figure out any dependencies of the effects of these products on age or gender-related differences. We investigated the short-term moisturizing effects of five different skin moisturizers on 60 participants by using a low frequency electrical instrument. Skin surface susceptance was recorded and compared before and after the application of moisturizers. Statistically significant differences were observed in the moisturizing effect among different types of products. However, with respect to gender and age differences, there were insignificant differences in the effects of the moisturizers. Results of this study suggest that some types of moisturizers that exist in the markets are not as effective as required, which calls for a further evaluation of the moisturizers before entering markets and offering them for sale. In addition, findings suggest that gender or age differences are perhaps not important to consider in the application of moisturizers.

Background: Fetal and neonatal health is of particular importance in pregnant women. Secondhand smoke (SHS) can jeopardize the health of the mother, fetus, and neonate. The present study was conducted to determine the relationship between exposure to secondhand smoke during pregnancy and neonatal-related outcomes.Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted in 2022 on 270 mother-newborn pairs through convenience sampling in two equal groups (n=135), including exposure and non-exposure to SHS at Rohani Hospital, Babol, Children's Hospital, Amirkola, and Imam Ali Hospital, Amol. In order to collect the data, a checklist including the demographic characteristics, medical variables, questions related to the exposure of mothers to cigarette smoke, the neonatal outcomes questionnaire, and the SNAPPE-II scale were used. Data analysis was performed using STATA statistical software (version 17), and the significance level of all tests was considered less than 0.05.Results: The mean age of mothers was 28.30±5.83 years, and 61% of births were by cesarean section. The SNAPPE-II score was 8.23​±5.29 in the non-exposure group and 20.68±13.53 in the exposure group (P=0.005). The prevalence of neonates with a birth weight of less than 2500gr was higher in mothers exposed to SHS (P=0.033). Considering confounding variables, the neonates in the non-exposure group were, on average, 1.46 cm taller than those in the exposure group (P=0.005). Exposure to smoking increases the risk of premature birth by 1.65 times (P=0.032). Conclusion: Exposure of pregnant mothers to SHS is associated with adverse neonatal outcomes. Therefore, it is recommended to train families to avoid exposure to cigarette smoke, especially during pregnancy, and also for health centers to pay special attention to this matter in the care of pregnant mothers.

In this paper, we propose an algorithm called Directional Exploration Genetic Algorithm (DEGA) to resolve a function \[Phi\] over the efficient set of a multi-objective integer linear programming problem (MOILP). DEGA algorithm belongs to evolutionary algorithms, which operate on the decision space by choosing the fastest improving directions that improve the objectives functions and \[Phi\] function. Two variants of this algorithm and a basic version of the genetic algorithm (BVGA) are performed and implemented in Python. Several benchmarks are carried out to evaluate the algorithm's performances and interesting results are obtained and discussed.

Background & Aims: There are variables whose influence on the risk of tuberculosis (TB) recurrence change over time. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the time-dependent effects of these variables on the hazard of TB recurrence. Materials & Methods: In this historical cohort study, data were collected from 4,564 TB patients who were referred to the TB research center of Dr. Masih Daneshvari Hospital, Tehran, from 2005 to 2015, in order to evaluate factors affecting the hazard of TB recurrence in terms of time dependency or time constancy. Data were analyzed in STATA 14 software using a statistical test based on Schoenfeld residuals, the time-dependent effects method, and the time-varying effects model (considering time function as f (t) = t). Results: The results showed that only the impact of the variables of drug adverse effects and passive smoker were inconstant over time and had time-dependent effects, and they also influenced the hazard of TB recurrence. Also, the effect of the two mentioned variables on the hazard of TB recurrence displayed a decreasing and increasing trend with time, respectively. Conclusion: Using the time-varying effects model in the study of the hazard of TB recurrence allows evaluating the time-dependent effects of the studied variables and also can differentiate them from the time-independent variables.

Businesses heavily depend on social media to engage with customers, utilizing various platforms for interaction, feedback, and promoting products. The influence of social media on customer trust, loyalty, and satisfaction is a prominent subject. This study seeks to comprehend how businesses leverage social media to attain these objectives, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods. The initial exploratory phase collected qualitative data from 24 business enterprises, employing grounded theory techniques such as open, axial, and selective coding to pinpoint the primary factors affecting customer trust, satisfaction, and loyalty. Building on the insights from the exploratory study, the research proposes a model and hypotheses. The subsequent confirmatory study employs a quantitative approach, collecting data from 300 respondents in Jordan and utilizing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) for analysis. Results underscore the pivotal roles of personalization, user-generated content, communications, word-of-mouth, emotions, promotions, and customer support as social media directions in shaping customer trust, satisfaction, and loyalty. This research provides valuable insights into the dynamics of how social media shapes customer relations, offering guidance to businesses navigating this ever-evolving landscape.

Analyzing data from a survey of U.S. adults (N = 509), our study examines the role of partisan media in (a) shaping people’s perceptions of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, (b) producing an echo-chamber effect, influencing users to believe that other people have an opinion similar to their own, and (c) creating a polarized public opinion environment, where people hold more extreme perspectives on BLM. Left-wing media consumption was positively correlated with favorable perceptions of BLM, while right-wing media consumption had a negative correlation, suggesting that partisan media could influence users’ own perceptions of BLM. Also, left-wing media consumption was positively correlated with the belief that others held favorable views of BLM, while right-wing media consumption was negatively correlated with such a belief, suggesting that partisan media could affect one’s beliefs about others’ perceptions. Supporting its role in producing an echo-chamber effect, frequent right-wing media usage was associated with a smaller difference between one’s own views and their assessment of others’ views regarding BLM. Finally, there was a positive correlation between left-wing media consumption and having extreme perceptions of BLM, suggesting that the use of left-wing media could play a role in creating a polarized public opinion climate.

Abstract Yeast species are a group of coexistent microorganisms in the oral cavity that can cause opportunistic infections in vulnerable individuals, including addicts. This study aimed to identify the yeast species profile responsible for oral yeast colonization (OYC) and the associated risk factors in patients with substance use disorder (SUD) in Ahvaz, Iran. Oral samples were collected from drug users hospitalized in 12 addiction treatment centers, and the related clinical information was mined. Oral yeast species were identified using 21-plex PCR and sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2). A total of 244 yeast strains were identified from 245 individuals with substance abuse. Candida albicans was the most common species (37.7%) and non-albicans Candida was responsible for 57.7% of OYC, primarily C. dubliniensis (33.2%) and C. glabrata (11.9%). Moreover, uncommon oral yeasts constituted 5.3% of species, including Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Clavispora lusitaniae, Pichia kluyveri, Geotrichum candidum, Magnusiomyces capitatus, Hanseniospora opuntiae, Wickerhamomyces subpelliculosus, Trichosporon asahii, and Aureobasidium pullulans. Importantly, OYC exhibited associations with such factors as duration of drug use, daily drug consumption rate, opioid utilization, oral drug administration, and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) score. The present study is the pioneering investigation revealing the prevalence and diversity of oral yeast species, along with associated risk factors, in individuals with SUD in southwestern Iran. Furthermore, it underscores the importance of developing efficient and cost-effective diagnostic methods tailored for resource-constrained settings.

Abstract Career crafting has emerged as a significant construct in the field of career development, with the potential to significantly boost individuals’ overall work satisfaction. This study aimed to examine whether career crafting could improve individual’s subjective career success and perceived employability. Career crafting is an inevitable course of career-related actions to achieve career satisfaction. Based on proactive behavior theory, it is hypothesized that career crafting would have an impact on individuals’ subjective career success and perceived employability through the moderating role of job autonomy. Using cross-sectional study design, data were collected via Google Forms survey from 224 employees working in various fields in Pakistan and data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) via AMOS. The results indicate that career crafting has a significant positive relationship with subjective career success and perceived employability. Furthermore, job autonomy also has significant positive relationship with subjective career success and perceived employability. However, the moderation of job autonomy was not supported. This study provides robust insights to career practitioners, academicians, and individuals. Overall, the study expands the literature of the novel notion of career crafting and career outcomes; additionally, the study advocates organizations to include career crafting in HR policies and helping them to enhance the well-being of employees in their career development.

Background & aim: As one of the most influential factors of marital life, sexual satisfaction can significantly lead to peace and compatibility of couples. The present study investigated the effect of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) on the level of sexual satisfaction in women of reproductive age.Methods: In this parallel cluster-randomized trial which was conducted from Feb. 2019 to Apr. 2020, 72 women of reproductive age (two groups of 36 subjects) who had moderate or undesirable sexual satisfaction were sampled. The guided imagery music was presented for the intervention group for 6 weeks as twice a week. No intervention was performed for the control group. The data collection tool included fertility characteristics and Larson questionnaires, which was completed before, immediately and one month after the intervention. Data were analyzed by SPSS software (version 20) using independent t-test, chi-square, Mann-Whitney and variance analysis with repeated measurements.Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in the sexual satisfaction score before the intervention. The mean sexual satisfaction score in the intervention group had a statistically significant difference between the baseline (91.1±9.1), immediately after intervention (112±4.46) and one month later (102±9.24) (P< 0.001). However, there was no significant difference between the changes in the sexual satisfaction of women in the control group between three times.Conclusion: GIM technique improves women's sexual satisfaction. It is recommended to health care providers to use this behavioral technique to enhance the level of sexual satisfaction in women of reproductive age.

Additive Manufacturing (AM) has been a noticeable technology and made significant progress since the late 1980s. Despite the tremendous growth, this technology is still facing numerous manufacturing challenges. AM of structures and smart materials such as shape memory polymers and alloys is one of the most actively researched areas in which printed objects can alter their properties and shape when exposed to a stimulus e.g., light, temperature, magnetic fields, pH, and humidity. The AM-build parts which can take advantage of these shape-changing features, lead to the growth of 4D printing by introducing time as a fourth dimension in AM processes. This new field originated in 2013, and since then, it has generated great interest due to its potential to build innovative, multi-functional, self-assembling, and self-repairing components with modifiable properties, shapes, and functionalities. This review article intends to examine the major developments of 4D printing in the biomedical field. The study will provide an overview of various 4D printing technologies including vat photo-polymerization, extrusion-based methods, and material jetting and their uses in the biomedical field. It focuses on smart materials like SMPs, LCEs, SMPAs, etc., and their applications in various industries e.g., mechanical, biomedical, aerospace, etc., and explores external stimuli such as moisture, temperature, pH, magnetic fields, and light. The article delves into the promising applications of 4D printing in biomedical fields such as drug delivery, orthopedics, medical devices, tissue engineering, and dentistry and analyzes the challenges associated with 4D printing in the biomedical field, and suggests the future directions including optimization of printing parameters, and exploration of novel materials to broaden its applications.

Abstract Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the major cause of mortality in the world. Premature development of CAD can be attributed to women under 55 and men under 45. Many genetic factors play a part in premature CAD. Among them, ANRIL, a long noncoding RNA is located at the 9p21 risk locus, and its expression seems to be correlated with CAD. In the current study, premature CAD and control blood samples, with and without Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), were genotyped for six SNPs at the 9p21 locus. Additionally, ANRIL serum expression was assessed in both groups using real-time PCR. It was performed using different primers targeting exons 1, 5–6, and 19. The χ2 test for association, along with t-tests and ANOVA, was employed for statistical analysis. In this study, we did not find any significant correlation between premature coronary artery disease and rs10757274, rs2383206, rs2383207, rs496892, rs10757278 and rs10738605. However, a lower ANRIL expression was correlated with each SNP risk genotype. Despite the correlation between lower ANRIL expression and CAD, Type 2 diabetes was associated with higher ANRIL expression. Altogether, the correlation between ANRIL expression and the genotypes of the studied SNPs indicated that genetic variants, even those in intronic regions, affect long noncoding RNA expression levels. In conclusion, we recommend combining genetic variants with expression analysis when developing screening strategies for families with premature CAD. To prevent the devastating outcomes of CAD in young adults, it is crucial to discover noninvasive genetic-based screening tests.

Abstract Prostate cancer, as one of the most prevalent malignancies in males, exhibits an approximate 5-year survival rate of 95% in advanced stages. A myriad of molecular events and mutations, including the accumulation of oncometabolites, underpin the genesis and progression of this cancer type. Despite growing research demonstrating the pivotal role of oncometabolites in supporting various cancers, including prostate cancer, the root causes of their accumulation, especially in the absence of enzymatic mutations, remain elusive. Consequently, identifying a tangible therapeutic target poses a formidable challenge. In this review, we aim to delve deeper into the implications of oncometabolite accumulation in prostate cancer. We center our focus on the consequential epigenetic alterations and impacts on cancer stem cells, with the ultimate goal of outlining novel therapeutic strategies. Graphical Abstract

In the present study, a binary biofuel blend was prepared by blending soy methyl ester (SME100) and methyl oleate (MO) SME50-M50 with diesel. The physiochemical properties of blended fuels were also investigated. The performance and emissions characteristics of all fuel blends were estimated using a common-rail direct injection (CRDI) engine. The outcomes demonstrate a reduction in brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC) when enriched biodiesel is used in comparison to SME100, nonetheless by the virtue of viscosity and heating value there is an increase in the BSFC value when compared to diesel. The average BSFC values were obtained as 5.3% (E25), 10.6% (E50), 17.5% (E75), 30% (SME100) and 14.9% (SME50-M50) higher than that of diesel. BTE was found to be highest for E25 and lowest for SME100 among all the blends. NOx emissions with blended biodiesel were slightly higher than diesel on account of MO being unsaturated, resulting in shorter ignition delay. The average NOx values obtained were higher than that of diesel and the corresponding values are 2.91% (E25), 4.1% (E50), 5.8% (E75), 8.3% (SME100) and 15.8% (SME50-M50). As a result of the increased oxygen content of the fuel, the concentrations of UHC and CO depreciated with the rise in concentration of soy methyl ester and MO (SME50-M50). Currently, Euro 6.2, which is the most recent emission regulation, uses 10% biofuel (B10); however, the results of this study establishes that E25, as an alternate fuel, complies with the contemporary engines without requiring any engine modifications.

Heparin is a negatively charged polysaccharide with various chain lengths and a hydrophilic backbone. Due to its fascinating chemical and physical properties, nontoxicity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability, heparin has been extensively used in different fields of medicine, such as cardiovascular and hematology. This review highlights recent and future advancements in designing materials based on heparin for various biomedical applications. The physicochemical and mechanical properties, biocompatibility, toxicity, and biodegradability of heparin are discussed. In addition, the applications of heparin-based materials in various biomedical fields, such as drug/gene delivery, tissue engineering, cancer therapy, and biosensors, are reviewed. Finally, challenges, opportunities, and future perspectives in preparing heparin-based materials are summarized.

Objectives: Hepatic CEACAM1 expression declines with advanced hepatic fibrosis stage in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Global and hepatocyte-specific deletions of Ceacam1 impair insulin clearance to cause hepatic insulin resistance and steatosis. They also cause hepatic inflammation and fibrosis, a condition characterized by excessive collagen production from activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). Given the positive effect of PPARγ on CEACAM1 transcription and on HSCs quiescence, the current studies investigated whether CEACAM1 loss from HSCs causes their activation. Methods: We examined whether lentiviral shRNA-mediated CEACAM1 donwregulation (KD-LX2) activates cultured human LX2 stellate cells. We also generated LratCre + Cc1fl/fl mutants with conditional Ceacam1 deletion in HSCs and characterized their MASH phenotype. Media transfer experiments were employed to examine whether media from mutant human and murine HSCs activate their wild-type counterparts. Results: LratCre + Cc1fl/fl mutants displayed hepatic inflammation and fibrosis but without insulin resistance or hepatic steatosis. Their HSCs, like KD-LX2 cells, underwent myofibroblastic transformation and their media activated wild-type HSCs. This was inhibited by nicotinic acid treatment which blunted the release of IL-6 and fatty acids, both of which activate the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase. Gefitinib inhibition of EGFR and its downstream NF-κB/IL-6/STAT3 inflammatory and MAPK-proliferation pathways also blunted HSCs activation in the absence of CEACAM1. Conclusions: Loss of CEACAM1 in HSCs provoked their myofibroblastic transformation in the absence of insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis. This response is mediated by autocrine HSCs activation of the EGFR pathway that amplifies inflammation and proliferation.

Introduction: Malignancy-related hypercalcemia is commonly observed in patients with advanced stages of cancer. It is intricately linked with an unfavourable prognosis among oncology patients. This study aimed to evaluate survival outcomes among individuals diagnosed with hypercalcemia associated with malignancy. Materials and Methods: This retrospective analysis of 173 cancer patients with hypercalcemia who sought treatment at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Lahore, Pakistan, between July 2019 and June 2020. This cohort of patients underwent a longitudinal follow-up for 2.5 years. To assess survival outcomes, the Kaplan-Meier tool was used to construct survival curves and estimate the survival probability over time. The significance of potential survival factors was evaluated using the log-rank test. Results: All patients exhibited elevated levels of calcium. At admission, the cohort demonstrated varying degrees of hypercalcemia severity attributable to malignancy: mild hypercalcemia was observed in approximately 61.3% of patients, moderate hypercalcemia in 23.7%, and severe hypercalcemia in 15% of cases. Among the total sample, most patients were female (54.9%), with a median age of 54. The primary tumour site most frequently observed was in cases of breast cancer (35.3%), wherein the prevalent histological subtype was lobular/ductal invasive carcinoma (34.1%). Most of the patients (93.6%) had an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status (ECOG) > 1. Additionally, the median overall survival for patients diagnosed with hypercalcemia was 51 days. Notably, there was a significant association between survival factors, including the primary site of malignancy (P=0.001), bone metastasis (P=0.04), severity and symptoms of hypercalcemia (P=0.001), altered mental state (P=0.001), albumin levels (P=0.001), and ECOG (P=0.001). Conclusion: Malignancy-related hypercalcemia in patients with cancer is a significant predictor of an unfavourable prognosis. The aforementioned survival factors may have the potential to influence patient survival outcomes. Further studies on larger cohorts are warranted.

We are presenting a rare case of sino-nasal teratocarcinosarcoma. A 43-year-old male patient presented with repeated episodes of epistaxis and headache for 3 months. On examination, the ENT consultant noticed a mass in the right nasal cavity for which biopsy was performed and CT scan advised. Sinonasal teratocarcinosarcoma was diagnosed on biopsy and immunohistochemistry. CT Face followed by PET/CT showed a FDG-avid soft tissue density mass in the right nasal cavity extending locally with a standardised uptake value of 7.4 with no distant metastasis. Surgical debulking is the first line of treatment as per the literature; however, in this case, the multidisciplinary tumour board initiated induction chemotherapy of 02 cycles of CISP/DOC owing to marked local extension of the tumour. Subsequent CT scan of the face shows a good treatment response with shrinkage of the sinonasal mass. After successful chemotherapy, the patient is now scheduled for radiotherapy and subsequently follow-up to assess the response.

Abstract Background Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is one of the most common and prevalent cancers all around the world with a prevalence of 3%. Approximately twenty percent of patients present with metastasis at the time of diagnosis, while late metastasis in renal cell carcinoma is a quite familiar phenomenon. Head and neck and particularly thyroid metastasis from RCC are rare events. Case We present a case of a 75‐year‐old woman who developed thyroid nodules 13 years after nephrectomy for RCC. Diagnosis confirmed metastatic RCC through clinical history, histomorphology, and immunohistochemistry. Imaging studies revealed thyroid lesions without metastasis in other organs. The patient underwent total thyroidectomy and remains symptom‐free after 2 years of follow‐up. Conclusion This case highlights the importance of considering metastatic lesions is crucial in managing thyroid nodules in patients with a history of cancer, particularly RCC.

A 46-year-old diabetic woman with unilateral renal fungus ball was successfully treated with antifungal therapy, endoscopic extraction and ureteral stent placement. The patient was initially treated for a right staghorn calculus, thereafter developed urinary symptoms. Imaging revealed distal left ureter filling defects and a previous stent at the ureteropelvic junction. Urine culture confirmed Candida glabrata sensitive to Micafungin. Bilateral ureteroscopy facilitated the extraction of a left renal pelvis fungus ball. This case underscores the challenges in diagnosing fungal UTIs in patients with predisposing factors, and highlights a combined medical and surgical approach for effective treatment of renal fungus balls.

Reintroducing endangered species into their restored habitats is a significant aspect of conservation biology. The scimitar-horned oryx (Oryx dammah), one of the most critically endangered antelopes worldwide, was reintroduced into several protected areas in Tunisia. Understanding their habitat requirements within micro-level ecosystems is crucial for developing effective management plans to aid in species recovery. Using information-theoretic and multimodel inference (MMI) techniques, we evaluated the impact of habitat and management characteristics on the distribution of the scimitar-horned oryx in Tunisia's Sidi Toui National Park during different seasons, from June 2020 – May 2022. Our analyses, using regression coefficients and selection probabilities, revealed that factors influencing habitat suitability varied seasonally for the scimitar-horned oryx. However, the presence of grasses emerged as the most consistent indicator of their occurrence throughout the year. The strong fit of models to the data was confirmed by Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) plots, which indicated an Area Under the Curve (AUC) > 0.9. The study has significant implications for developing practical habitat management plans for the scimitar-horned oryx in Sidi Toui National Park.

Knowledge Graphs (KGs) have become a pivotal knowledge representation tool in machine learning, not only providing access to existing knowledge but also enabling the discovery of new knowledge through advanced applications. Among the scalable reasoning methods used for such applications, distributed graph embedding approaches, particularly GNNs, have become popular for large-scale graph-related tasks. However, many of these methods have limitations in their interpretability and fail to take into account structural similarity in their representation. Hyperdimensional Computing (HDC), also known as Vector Symbolic Architecture (VSA), addresses this issue by using well-defined cognitive operations on distributed representations of symbolic concepts. This work proposes and evaluates a new vector symbolic graph representation, CLOG, that preserves approximate structural similarity beyond edge correspondence and fundamentally differs from previous methods. The model's effectiveness in graph representation is evaluated through theoretical analysis, graph reconstruction experiments, and link prediction task, highlighting its efficiency and accuracy. This approach significantly advances the field by enhancing the capabilities of HDC in graph representation, representing a notable improvement over existing methods.

DC power systems have emerged as a cost-effective solution for electric power generation and transmission, challenging the dominance of AC distribution systems. However, a comprehensive efficiency comparison between DC and AC microgrids remains understudied. This study seeks to explore and conduct a thorough survey on development and designing of DC microgrids to address this gap. Firstly, a comprehensive literature review comparing the efficiencies of AC and DC microgrids has been presented. The analysis highlights the superior efficiency of DC distribution systems over AC systems, supported by detailed advantages. Secondly, hardware implementation has been performed to directly compare the efficiency of DC versus AC systems. Research validity and application are further improved by the hardware prototype’s scalability, which in simulation allows for a thorough assessment of system stability over a range of scenarios from four to six terminals. Test results from the built hardware prototype demonstrate an astounding 15% increase in efficiency using the DC system compared to the AC system, demonstrating its potential for improved performance in real-world scenarios. In simulation results, the designed DC microgrid demonstrates stable voltages of 500V under steady state operation and rapid recovery within 80 ms under both symmetrical and asymmetrical faults has been observed. The research being investigated utilizes hardware implementation and simulation to provide useful insights into the efficiency and stability of DC microgrids in comparison to AC systems. These results are important for developing robust power distribution networks in modern energy environments, promoting sustainability and dependability in infrastructure growth.
