Abstract

BACKGROUND: Membrane distillation (MD) for desalination encounters significant hurdles as a result of pore wetting, leading to reduced permeate flux or deterioration in permeate quality over time. Therefore, membranes used in MD must be highly hydrophobic to prevent liquid from entering the pores and contaminating the permeate stream. In this study, a thin layer of MoS2‐TiO2 composite was coated using poly (DOPA) as an adhesive to enhance attachment. Two coating methods, interlinking and layering, were compared to determine the most effective method for forming a thin hydrophobic coating layer onto PVDF‐PES hollow fiber membrane. RESULTS: Interestingly, this study revealed that increasing the number of dipping cycles led to higher flux, defying conventional expectations. This unexpected outcome is likely to have resulted from the thicker coatings creating a more hydrophobic surface, reducing water molecule adhesion and preventing wetting. Consequently, the membrane demonstrated enhanced flux despite its increased thickness. Among the membranes tested, the MoS2‐TiO2/PVDF‐PES membrane coated using the layering method exhibited the best performance, leading to a flux of 2.06 kg m−2 h−1 and 99.99% salt rejection. This superior performance can also be attributed to the membrane's hydrophobic properties, evident in its water contact angle (WCA) of 99°. By contrast, the interlinking method resulted in lower performance, with a permeate flux of 1.70 kg m−2 h−1 and 99.96% salt rejection, which is likely to have resulted from its lower WCA of 86°. 46. Methane adsorption by porous graphene derived from rice husk ashes under various stabilization temperatures

Abstract

The present work focused on the determination of texture, morphology, crystallinity, and gas adsorption characteristics of porous graphene prepared from rice husks ashes at different stabilization temperature. The stabilization temperature applied in this work is 100 °C, 200 °C, 300 °C, and 400 °C to convert rice husk into rice husk ashes (RHA). Chemical activation was adopted at temperature 800 °C using potassium hydroxide (KOH) as dehydrating agent at (1:5) impregnation ratio to convert RHA into rice husk ashes-derived graphene (GRHA). The resultant GRHA were characterized in terms of their morphological changes, SSA, crystallinity, and functional group with TEM, the BET method, Raman spectroscopy, and XRD analysis, respectively. Results from this study showed that the SSA of the GRHA at stabilization temperature 200 °C (1556.3 m2/g) is the highest compared to the other stabilization temperature. Raman spectroscopy analysis revealed that all GRHA samples possess D, G, and 2D bands, which confirm the successful synthesis of the rice husks into porous graphene-like materials, known as GRHA. Appearance of diffraction peak in XRD at 44.7° indicating the graphitic structure of all the GRHA samples. Meanwhile, the TEM images of GRHA200 exhibited wrinkled structures due to the intercalation of oxygen and a few layers of graphene flakes. These wrinkled structures and graphene layers are the other factors that lead to the highest SSA of GRHA200 compared to other prepared samples GRHA. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity of CH4for GRHA200 is up to 43 cm3/g at 35 bar and ambient temperature, almost double the adsorption capacity performance of GRHA400 at the same operating pressure and temperature.

Abstract

Combination of enzymatic catalysis and membrane technology is advantageous in biotechnology processes. To this regard, a simple technique to immobilize the enzyme in the membrane support via reverse filtration will be applied. Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) (EC 1.1.1.1) was chosen as the enzyme to be immobilized on the commercial ultrafiltration membrane in this study. ADH catalyzed formaldehyde (CHOH) to methanol (CH3OH) and simultaneously oxidized nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) to NAD+. An integrated, hydrophilic graphene oxide-based polymer membrane was used as a support to immobilize the enzyme. The objective of the study is to assess the performance of the biocatalytic membrane reactor when graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles is co-deposited together with ADH enzyme within the polyethersulfone (PES) membrane in terms of its membrane permeability, hydrophilicity, enzyme loading, reaction conversion and biocatalytic productivity. The results showed that the membrane permeability increased with the addition of GO which indicating improved membrane hydrophilicity. Enzyme loading is highest for PES/GO 0.1 membrane at 79 %. The reaction conversion for all the membranes recorded between 60 % to 84 %, however the PES/GO membranes showed to be higher than the pristine membrane. The enrichment of GO improved the activity of ADH in 5 cycles. The cumulative biocatalytic productivity of PES/GO membranes in 5 consecutive cycles were higher with 455.4 µmol CH3OH/mgADH·h and 390.5 µmol CH3OH/mgADH·h respectively in comparison to only 359.5 µmol CH3OH/mgADH·h for pristine membrane. Abstract

Quantum dots are semiconductor nanoparticles with optical and electronic (optoelectronic) properties that vary with size and composition. They distinguish themselves from traditional fluorescence dyes due to their high visibility, long-lasting, size-tuneable, and narrow luminescence. Quantum dots are being used for a wide range of biological applications, including fluorescent assays for drug development, disease detection, single protein monitoring, and intracellular reporting. This mini review will focus on the overview of bioconjugation techniques which include the covalent and non-covalent conjugation of quantum dots surface to the active functional groups of carboxyl, amine, thiol, epoxy, hydroxyl and aldehyde. The various type of bioconjugation should be carefully selected based on the application of the quantum dots and the critical criteria of a biocompatible quantum dots will be also discussed. Recent application of quantum dots in biological system in bioimaging, bioanalytical, biosensing and drug delivery were laid out.
