Abstract

We present a search for events consistent with the production and decay of the squarks and gluinos of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) in the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp collider. We examined data for events containing large missing transverse energy and three or more jets. We observed no excess of events above the expected yield from standard model processes. For a choice of MSSM parameter values, we set a lower limit at the 95% confidence level on the mass of the gluino of 144 GeV /c2 for all squark masses and a lower limit of 212 GeV /c2 for equal squark and gluino masses. © 1995 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present results from a search for anomalous WW and WZ production in p p̄ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV. We used p p̄ →jjX events observed during the 1992-1993 run of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 13.7 ± 0.7 pb -1. A fit to the transverse momentum spectrum of the W boson yields direct limits on the CP-conserving anomalous WWγ and WWZ coupling parameters of -0.9 < Δκ < 1.1 (with λ = 0) and -0.6 < λ < 0.7 (with Δκ = 0) at the 95% confidence level, for a form factor scale Λ = 1.5 TeV, assuming that the WWγ and WWZ coupling parameters are equal.

10. Isolated photon cross section in the central and forward rapidity regions in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.8TeV

Abstract

A measurement of the cross section for production of single, isolated photons is reported for transverse energies in the range of 10-125 GeV for two regions of pseudorapidity, |η| < 0.9 and 1.6 < |η| < 2.5. The data represent 12.9 pb-1 of integrated luminosity accumulated in p̄p collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV and recorded with the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The background, predominantly from jets which fragment to neutral mesons, is estimated using the longitudinal shower shape in the calorimeter. In both pseudorapidity regions the cross section is found to agree with the next-to-leading order QCD prediction for 30 ≲ ET y ≲ 80 GeV.

11. Jet production via strongly interacting color-singlet exchange in p(p)over-bar collisions

Abstract

A study of the particle multiplicity between jets with large rapidity separation has been performed using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp̄ Collider operating at √s = 1.8 TeV. A significant excess of low-multiplicity events is observed above the expectation for color-exchange processes. The measured fractional excess is 1.07 ± 0.10(stat) -0.13 +0.25(syst)%, which is consistent with a strongly interacting color-singlet (colorless) exchange process and cannot be explained by electroweak exchange alone. A lower limit of 0.80% (95% C.L.) is obtained on the fraction of dijet events with color-singlet exchange, independent of the rapidity gap survival probability.

12. J/ψ production in pp̄ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV

Abstract

We have studied J/ψ production in pp̄ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV with the DØ detector at Fermilab using μ+/μ- data. We have measured the inclusive J/ψ production cross section as a function of J/ψ transverse momentum, pT. For the kinematic range pT > 8 GeV/c and |η\ < 0.6 we obtain σ(pp̄ → J/ψ + X) ·Br(J/ψ → μ+μ-) = 2.08 ± 0.17(stat) ± 0.46(syst) nb. Using the muon impact parameter we have estimated the fraction of J/ψ mesons coming from B meson decays to be fb = 0.35 ± 0.09(stat)±0.10(syst) and inferred the inclusive b production cross section. From the information on the event topology the fraction of nonisolated J/ψ events has been measured to be fnonisol = 0.64 ± 0.08(stat)±0.06(syst). We have also obtained the fraction of J/ψ events resulting from radiative decays of χc states, fχ = 0.32 ± 0.07(stat)±0.07(syst). We discuss the implications of our measurements for charmonium production processes.

13. EXPERIMENTAL LIMIT ON THE DECAY W+--]PI+-GAMMA AT THE CERN PBARP COLLIDER

Abstract

Results are given on a search for the decay W±→π±γwith the UA2 detector in pp collisions at √s=630 GeV No signal for such a process is observed and upper limits on the ratio R=Γ(W±→π ±γ)/Γ(W±→e ±v) < 4 9×10-3 and on the branching ratio BR(W±→π±γ) < 5 4×10-4 are derived at 95% confidence level.

14. Second generation leptoquark earch in pp̄ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV

Abstract

We report on a search for second generation scalar leptoquarks with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp̄ collider at √s = 1.8 TeV. This search is based on 12.7 pb-1 of data. Second generation leptoquarks are assumed to be produced in pairs and to decay into a neutrino and quark with branching ratio β or into a neutrino and quark with branching ratio 1 - β. We obtain cross section times branching ratio limits as a function of leptoquark mass and set lower limits on the leptoquark mass at the 95% confidence level.

15. Limits on the anomalous ZZγ and Zγγ couplings in pp̄ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV

Abstract

We performed a direct search for the anomalous ZZγ and Zγγ couplings by studying pp̄ → ℓℓγ + X (ℓ = e, μ) events at √s = 1.8 TeV with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. A fit to the transverse energy spectrum of the photon in the signal events, based on the data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 14.3 pb-1 (13.7 pb-1) for the electron (muon) channel, yields the following 95% confidence level limits on the anomalous CP-conserving ZZγ couplings: |h30Z| < 1.8 (h40Z = 0) and |h30Z| < 0.5 (h30Z = 0), for a form-factor scale A = 500 GeV. Limits for the Zγγ couplings and CP-violating couplings are also discussed.

Abstract

We report on a search for right-handed W bosons (WR) with mass greater than 200 GeV/c2. We used data collected with the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p p̄ collider at √s = 1.8 TeV to search for WR decays into an electron and a massive right-handed neutrino WR +- → e+-NR. Using the inclusive electron data, we set mass limits independent of the NR decay: mWR > 650 GeV/c2 and mWR > 720 GeV/c2 at the 95% confidence level, valid for mNR > 1/2mWR and mNR ≪ mWR. respectively. The latter also represents a new lower limit on the mass of a heavy left-handed W boson (W') decaying into ev. In addition, limits on mWRvalid for larger values of the NR mass are obtained assuming that NR decays to an electron and two jets.

Abstract

The two-jet invariant mass spectrum as measured in the UA2 experiment is used to search for additional heavy vector bosons decaying to two-jets. The mass of an additional W boson that couples to fermions with a V + A form is constrained to be greater than 261 GeV to the 90% confidence level. A limit on the production cross section of additional W and Z bosons is given as a function of the boson mass. A limit on the production of excited quarks is also given as a function of the excited quark mass.

The WW gauge boson couplings were measured using pp» +X (=e,) events at s=1.8 TeV observed with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The signal, obtained from the data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 13.8 pb-1, agrees well with the standard model prediction. A fit to the photon transverse energy spectrum yields limits at the 95% confidence level on the CP-conserving anomalous coupling parameters of -1.6<

Abstract

The process p̄p→evy+X is studied as √s=630 GeV The observed signal is used to extract a direct measurement of the parameters κ and λ which define the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of the W boson and therefore the WWγ coupling We find κ=1-2 2 +2 6 and λ=0-1 8 +1 7 and their 95% confidence limits - 3 5 < κ < 5 9 and -3 6 < λ < 3 5 The results are model independent and in good agreement with the standard model values, κ=1 and λ=0.

Abstract

The ratio of the number of W+1 jet to W+0 jet events is measured with the D0 detector using data from the 1992-93 Tevatron Collider run. For the W→eν channel with a minimum jet ET cutoff of 25 GeV, the experimental ratio is 0.065±0.003stat±0.007syst. Next-to-leading order QCD predictions for various parton distributions agree well with each other and are all over 1 standard deviation below the measurement. Varying the strong coupling constant αs in both the parton distributions and the partonic cross sections simultaneously does not remove this discrepancy. © 1995 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present a search for pair produced top squarks, the supersymmetric partners of the top quark, using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp̄ collider. We consider a scenario in which the lighter of the two top squarks t̃ l decays with 100% branching fraction to a charm quark and the lightest neutralino X̃ 1 0 yielding a signal of two acollinear jets with missing transverse energy. We observe 3 events while we expect 3.5 ± 1.2 events from the known standard model processes. We exclude at the 95% confidence level a significant region of the mt̃1-mX̃10 parameter space. The highest mt̃1 value we exclude is 93 GeV/c 2 with a corresponding mmX̃10 value of 8 GeV/c 2.

Abstract

The inclusive cross sections times leptonic branching ratios for W and Z boson production in p p̄ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV were measured using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider: σWB(W → e ν) = 2.36 ± 0.07 ± 0.13 n b, σWB(W → μν) = 2.09 ± 0.23 ± 0.11 n b, σZB(Z → e+e-) = 0.218 ± 0.011 ± 0.012 n b, and σZB(Z → μ+μ-) = 0.178 ± 0.030 ± 0.009 n b. The first error is the combined statistical and systematic uncertainty, and the second reflects the uncertainty in the luminosity. For the combined electron and muon analyses we find σWB(W → lν)/σZB(Z → l+l-) = 10.90 ± 0.49. Assuming standard model couplings, this result is used to determine the width of the W boson, Γ(W) = 2.044 ± 0.093 GeV.

Abstract

A search for a heavy charged gauge boson, W′, using the decay channels W′ → eν and W′ → τν → eννν is reported. The data used in the analysis were collected by the DØ experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron during the 1992-93 pp collider run from an integrated luminosity of 13.9 ± 0.8 pb-1 at s=1.8 TeV. Assuming that the neutrino from W′ decay is stable and has a mass significantly less than mW′, an upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on the cross section times branching ratio for pp → W′ → eν. A W′ with the same couplings to quarks and leptons as the standard model W boson is excluded for mW′ < 610 GeV/c2. © 1995.

Abstract

The global topologies of inclusive three- and four-jet events produced in p̄p interactions are described. The three- and four-jet events are selected from data recorded by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider operating at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 1800 GeV. The measured, normalized distributions of various topological variables are compared with parton-level predictions of tree-level QCD calculations. The parton-level QCD calculations are found to be in good agreement with the data. The studies also show that the topological distributions of the different subprocesses involving different numbers of quarks are very similar and reproduce the measured distributions well. The parton-shower Monte Carlo generators provide a less satisfactory description of the topologies of the three- and four-jet events. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We have searched for associated production of the lightest chargino W̃1 and next-to-lightest neutralino Z̄2 of the minimal supersymmetric standard model in pp̄ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV using the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 12.5 ± 0.7 pb-1 were examined for events containing three isolated leptons. No evidence for W̃1Z̃2 pair production was found. Limits on σ(W̃1Z̃2)B(W̃1 → lνZ̃1)B(Z̃2 → ll̄Z̃1) are presented.

Abstract

A search has been made for scalar leptoquark pair production with the upgraded UA2 detector at the CERN pp Collider at √s = 630 GeV, investigating decays of the leptoquark into a quark and either an electron or an electron neutrino. From an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 13 pb-1 a lower limit has been determined for the mass of first generation leptoquarks, yielding 67 GeV (95% CL) for a scalar leptoquark decaying with a 50% branching ratio into a quark and an electron. © 1992.

Abstract

A measurement of the cross section for production of single, isolated photons is reported for transverse energies in the range of 10-125 GeV for two regions of pseudorapidity, |η| < 0.9 and 1.6 < |η| < 2.5. The data represent 12.9 pb-1 of integrated luminosity accumulated in p̄p collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV and recorded with the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The background, predominantly from jets which fragment to neutral mesons, is estimated using the longitudinal shower shape in the calorimeter. In both pseudorapidity regions the cross section is found to agree with the next-to-leading order QCD prediction for 30 ≲ ET y ≲ 80 GeV.

Abstract

We present results from a search for anomalous WW and WZ production in p p̄ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV. We used p p̄ →jjX events observed during the 1992-1993 run of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 13.7 ± 0.7 pb -1. A fit to the transverse momentum spectrum of the W boson yields direct limits on the CP-conserving anomalous WWγ and WWZ coupling parameters of -0.9 < Δκ < 1.1 (with λ = 0) and -0.6 < λ < 0.7 (with Δκ = 0) at the 95% confidence level, for a form factor scale Λ = 1.5 TeV, assuming that the WWγ and WWZ coupling parameters are equal.

Abstract

The global topologies of inclusive three- and four-jet events produced in p̄p interactions are described. The three- and four-jet events are selected from data recorded by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider operating at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 1800 GeV. The measured, normalized distributions of various topological variables are compared with parton-level predictions of tree-level QCD calculations. The parton-level QCD calculations are found to be in good agreement with the data. The studies also show that the topological distributions of the different subprocesses involving different numbers of quarks are very similar and reproduce the measured distributions well. The parton-shower Monte Carlo generators provide a less satisfactory description of the topologies of the three- and four-jet events. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We report on a search for right-handed W bosons (WR) with mass greater than 200 GeV/c2. We used data collected with the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p p̄ collider at √s = 1.8 TeV to search for WR decays into an electron and a massive right-handed neutrino WR +- → e+-NR. Using the inclusive electron data, we set mass limits independent of the NR decay: mWR > 650 GeV/c2 and mWR > 720 GeV/c2 at the 95% confidence level, valid for mNR > 1/2mWR and mNR ≪ mWR. respectively. The latter also represents a new lower limit on the mass of a heavy left-handed W boson (W') decaying into ev. In addition, limits on mWRvalid for larger values of the NR mass are obtained assuming that NR decays to an electron and two jets.

Abstract

We have searched for associated production of the lightest chargino W̃1 and next-to-lightest neutralino Z̄2 of the minimal supersymmetric standard model in pp̄ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV using the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 12.5 ± 0.7 pb-1 were examined for events containing three isolated leptons. No evidence for W̃1Z̃2 pair production was found. Limits on σ(W̃1Z̃2)B(W̃1 → lνZ̃1)B(Z̃2 → ll̄Z̃1) are presented.

Abstract

We present a search for pair produced top squarks, the supersymmetric partners of the top quark, using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp̄ collider. We consider a scenario in which the lighter of the two top squarks t̃ l decays with 100% branching fraction to a charm quark and the lightest neutralino X̃ 1 0 yielding a signal of two acollinear jets with missing transverse energy. We observe 3 events while we expect 3.5 ± 1.2 events from the known standard model processes. We exclude at the 95% confidence level a significant region of the mt̃1-mX̃10 parameter space. The highest mt̃1 value we exclude is 93 GeV/c 2 with a corresponding mmX̃10 value of 8 GeV/c 2.

Abstract

A study of the particle multiplicity between jets with large rapidity separation has been performed using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp̄ Collider operating at √s = 1.8 TeV. A significant excess of low-multiplicity events is observed above the expectation for color-exchange processes. The measured fractional excess is 1.07 ± 0.10(stat) -0.13 +0.25(syst)%, which is consistent with a strongly interacting color-singlet (colorless) exchange process and cannot be explained by electroweak exchange alone. A lower limit of 0.80% (95% C.L.) is obtained on the fraction of dijet events with color-singlet exchange, independent of the rapidity gap survival probability.
