Terahertz (THZ) spectroscopy has emerged as a superior label-free sensing technology in the detection, identification, and quantification of biomolecules in various biological samples. However, the limitations in identification and discrimination sensitivity of current methods impede the wider adoption of this technology. In this article, a meticulously designed metasurface is proposed for molecular fingerprint enhancement, consisting of a periodic array of lithium tantalate triangular prism tetramers arranged in a square quartz lattice. The physical mechanism is explained by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The metasurface achieves a high quality factor (Q-factor) of 231 and demonstrates excellent THz sensing capabilities with a figure of merit (FoM) of 609. By varying the incident angle of the THz wave, the molecular fingerprint signal is strengthened, enabling the highly sensitive detection of trace amounts of analyte. Consequently, cinnamoylglycine can be detected with a sensitivity limit as low as 1.23   μ g · c m − 2 . This study offers critical insights into the advanced application of THz waves in biomedicine, particularly for the detection of urinary biomarkers in various diseases, including gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Thanks to their giant, yet tunable, Q-factor resonances, all-dielectric metasurfaces supporting the quasi-bound states in the continuum (q-BIC) resonances are well-suited to provide a promising platform for quantum-coherent light–matter interactions. Yet, the strong coupling regime, characterized by the hybrid light–matter states – polaritons, has not yet been fully explored in the mid-infrared regime. This paper investigates the parameter space of vibrational strong coupling (VSC) between material and metasurface cavities supporting q-BIC resonances in the mid-infrared spectral range. We outline the effects of transition dipole strength, damping rate, and the number of molecules coupled to a single cavity, as well as the cavity damping rates, to understand their respective impacts on VSC. By tuning the Q-factor of the metasurface and material parameters, a new transition light–matter coupling zone is introduced, bridging the gap between weak and strong coupling, where polaritons form but their linewidths prohibit their spectral identification. The study further identifies the effects of cavity linewidth on polariton peak separability in strongly coupled systems, highlighting that the cavities with smaller nonradiative losses and narrower linewidths facilitate better polariton separability. Moreover, we found that matching cavity and material loss, satisfying the critical strong coupling condition, enhances the coupling strength between cavity and material. Overall, these findings can guide the design of photonic cavities suited for VSC experiments, contributing to the burgeoning fields of polaritonic chemistry, light-mediated modulation of chemical reactivity, and highly sensitive molecular spectroscopy. Chiral metasurfaces have attracted considerable attention because of their immense potential for diverse applications requiring chiral light-matter interactions. Recently, boosted by a mechanism based on the concept of bound states in the continuum (BICs), high Q factor chiroptical resonances have been exhibited by breaking the inversion symmetries of planar metasurfaces. However, the optical chirality of these chiral metasurfaces is generally intolerable with respect to the structural geometries, especially the geometric asymmetry. Here, we present a novel chiral quasi-BIC with strong optical chirality in an all-dielectric metasurface. By simultaneously breaking the in-plane C 2 rotational and mirror symmetries, the chiral metasurface shows enhanced chiroptical resonances with near-unity CD (∼0.996) and high Q factors (∼2274) at terahertz frequencies. Further analyses based on numerical simulations reveal that the CD of the chiroptical resonance depicts exceptional remarkable tolerableness to the geometry asymmetry δ when δ are present in a broad range, while the corresponding Q factor is modulated accordingly. This article shows an all-dielectric metasurface consisting of "H"-shaped silicon disks with tilted splitting gaps, which can detect the temperature and refractive index (RI). By introducing asymmetry parameters that excite the quasi-BIC, there are three distinct Fano resonances with nearly 100% modulation depth, and the maximal quality factor (Q-factor) is over 104. The predominant roles of different electromagnetic excitations in three distinct modes are demonstrated through near-field analysis and multipole decomposition. A numerical analysis of resonance response based on different refractive indices reveals a RI sensitivity of 262 nm/RIU and figure of merit (FOM) of 2183 RIU−1. This sensor can detect temperature fluctuations with a temperature sensitivity of 59.5 pm/k. We experimentally demonstrate the tuning of accidental bound states in the continuum (A-BICs) in silicon nanodisk arrays. The A-BIC emerges of the destructive interference of multipoles, which are the dominating out-of-plane electric dipole and in-plane magnetic dipole, and weak electric quadrupole and magnetic quadrupole. We further show that the spectral and angular position of the A-BIC can be conveniently tuned by varying the nanodisk size or the lattice period. Remarkably, the angular position can be tuned even to 0°, suggesting an interesting transition of the A-BIC from an off-Γ-BIC to an at-Γ-BIC. Our work provides a new strategy for light trapping with high quality factors, and the obtained tunable A-BICs can find potential applications in low-threshold lasing, enhanced nonlinear optics, and optical sensing.

The metasurface refractive index sensor has a high degree of tunability and flexibility, providing excellent performance for high precision refractive index sensing applications. The metasurface absorber with metallic structure has been hindered in further sensor applications due to the inherent Ohmic loss of the metallic material. In this study, a dual nanorod metasurface structure based on semiconductor Si was designed, introducing a symmetry-breaking structure to excite dual ultra-narrow q-BIC resonance peaks with Fano line shapes. Both peaks are located in the near-infrared region, and multipole analysis shows that this strong field enhancement effect is induced by a magnetic dipole. Experimental results demonstrate the potential of this sensor to provide dual-channel detection while achieving high sensitivity and high Q-factor. We believe that this device exhibits outstanding performance and high practicality, providing a reference for the development and application of biological and environmental sensors.

Polarization camera based on CMOS sensor and nano wire-grid technology have found widespread applications in medical diagnostics, remote sensing and industrial inspection. However, the limited filtering properties of wire-grid polarizers and the small field-of-view provided by conventional microlens restrict the energy efficiency of these systems while also increasing their cost, size and weight. In this study, we propose an innovative approach that integrates focusing and splitting of polarization states into a single-layer all-dielectric metasurface. This metasurface enables full-Stokes polarization imaging for a wide field-of-view conical light. The design of the metasurface utilizes a phase compensation method to effectively focus orthogonal polarized conical light onto the central pixel of the CMOS sensor. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that this metasurface can accurately detect full-Stokes parameters within ±20° incident cone angles with an average efficiency reaching 83.0%. The angle can be extended to ±90° with an average efficiency exceeding 80%. We fabricated a three super-pixel metasurface prototype, and experimental measurements reveal its ability to efficiently focus and split three pairs of orthogonal polarization states under ±11° conical angle incidence with an average focusing efficiency of 68.1%. This study presents a promising solution for achieving wide field-of-view and high-efficiency polarization detection in integrated CMOS systems.

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) spectrum are localized states in the continuum domain with an infinite lifetime, zero radiation, and an infinite quality factor (Q-factor). The structural symmetry is typically broken to transform BICs into quasi-BICs with ultrahigh Q-factors, which are used in fields such as optical switches, nonlinear optics, and sensing. Herein, we present an all-dielectric metasurface fabricated by depositing Si on the SiO2 substrate and etching an "8"-shape hole in the middle of each unit. By breaking the symmetry of the structure, the BIC is transformed into a quasi-BIC mode, which can realize triple Fano resonances with a high Q-factor. The effects of different structural parameters on the Fano resonances are investigated by varying the structural parameters. The physical mechanisms of the three Fano resonances are elucidated by combining the electromagnetic field and multipole decomposition of scattered power. Calculation results show that the maximum Q-factor reaches 4.7 × 104, the maximum figure-of-merit (FOM) value reaches 675, and the modulation depths of the three resonances are approximately 100%. The metasurface exhibits a high Q-factor, FOM value, and modulation depth, thus rendering it suitable for application to high-performance biosensors, nonlinear optics, and optical switches. 2D materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are a new class of atomic-layer materials possessing optical and electric properties that significantly depend on the number of layers. Electronic transitions can be manipulated in artificial resonant electromagnetic (EM) fields using metasurfaces and other designed nanostructures. Here, we demonstrate prominently resonant enhancement in the photoluminescence (PL) of atomic monolayer, WS2, doped with a small quantity of Mo. The excitonic PL showed a strong enhancement effect on a higher-order magnetic resonance of all-dielectric metasurfaces consisting of periodic arrays of Si nanopellets. The PL intensity witnessed a 300-fold enhancement compared to the reference PL intensity on a flat silicon dioxide (SiO2) layer, which suggests a drastic change in the dynamics of photoexcited states. Confocal PL microscopy and the analysis revealed that the single photons were coherently emitted from the TMDC monolayer on the metasurface. Furthermore, examining the PL lifetime in the ps and ns timescales clarified two exponential components at the prominent exciton PL: a short-time component decaying in 22 ps and a long-time component lasting over 10 ns. Therefore, we can infer that the radiative components were significantly activated in the TMDC monolayer on the metasurfaces in comparison to the reference monolayer on a flat SiO2 layer.

We are interested in the resonant electromagnetic scattering by all-dielectric metasurfaces made of a two-dimensional lattice of nanoparticles with high refractive indices. In [Ammari, Li, and Zou, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 376 (2023), pp. 39--90], it has been shown that a single high-index nanoresonator can couple with the incident wave and exhibit a strong magnetic dipole response. Recent physics experiments reveal that when the particles are arranged in certain periodic configurations, they may have different anomalous scattering effects in the macroscopic scale, compared to the single-particle case. In this work, we shall develop a rigorous mathematical framework for analyzing the resonant behaviors of all-dielectric metasurfaces. We start with the characterization of subwavelength scattering resonances in such a periodic setting and their asymptotic expansions in terms of the refractive index of the nanoparticles. Then we show that real resonances always exist below the essential spectrum of the periodic Maxwell operator and that they are the simple poles of the scattering resolvent with the exponentially decaying resonant modes. By using group theory, we discuss the implications of the symmetry of the metasurface on the subwavelength band functions and their associated eigenfunctions. For the symmetric metasurfaces with the normal incidence, we use a variational method to show the existence of embedded eigenvalues (i.e., real subwavelength resonances embedded in the continuous radiation spectrum). Furthermore, we break the configuration symmetry either by introducing a small deformation of particles or by slightly deviating from the normal incidence and prove that Fano-type reflection and transmission anomalies can arise in both of these scenarios. An all-dielectric metasurface composed of orthogonal-slit silicon disks is proposed in this study. By modifying the unit structure of the metasurface with the bound states in the continuum (BICs), a sharp Fano resonance can be generated. The resonance properties of the metasurface are investigated by analyzing the effects of the structural parameters on the resonance using the eigenmode analysis method. The Q factor and the resonance wavelength can be adjusted by varying the slit width, the disk thickness, and the disk radius. The electromagnetic characteristics and mechanism of the toroidal dipole BICs (TD-BICs) are explored in depth through an analysis of the multipole expansion of the scattered power, along with the electromagnetic field and the current distribution at resonance. This research provides a novel approach for the excitation of strong TD-BIC resonance and proposes potential applications in optical switches, high-sensitivity optical sensors, and related areas. All-dielectric metasurfaces underpinned by the physics of bound states in the continuum (BICs) have surged interest due to their spectral selectivity and strong light confinement. In this work, We propose a compensation mechanism for SP-BIC with stable resonance wavelength and controllable Q-factor. Here we take metasurfaces consisting of four nano-square disks as an example to break the symmetry of the unit cell by both x-compensation and y-compensation, respectively, and the resonance wavelengths are stable. The results show that the four nanodisks are excited in two modes with x-compensation and y-compensation when only C2 symmetry is preserved, and in one mode with x-compensation and y-compensation when only σx symmetry is preserved. Multiple decomposition results show that the loop dipole and magnetic dipole dominate the modes that retain only C2 symmetry excitation. In contrast, the magnetic dipole dominates the mode that retains only the σx symmetry excitation. Both modes excited by the compensation mechanism have stable resonances with high q-factors under the condition of preserving only C2 symmetry or only σx symmetry. Metasurfaces realized by the compensation mechanism may find promising applications in enhanced light-matter interactions such as lasers, sensing, strong coupling, and nonlinear harmonic generation.

In this paper, an all-dielectric metasurface based on phase-change material Ge2Sb2Se4Te1 (GSST) working in the mid-infrared band is designed, and combined with Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase to realize multifunctional metasurfaces. The metasurface can convert incident circularly polarized waves to transmitted or reflected waves of opposite chirality, regardless of GSST is in amorphous or crystalline state. Due to constructive interference and destructive interference, the metasurface obtains giant circular dichroism (CD). The maximum CD value reaches 0.997 at f = 64 THz when GSST is in amorphous state and 0.97 at f = 45 THz when GSST is in crystalline state. According to the principle of PB phase, three optical devices are realized by the rational arrangement of all-dielectric meta-atoms with different rotation angles, which are beam deflectors, lenses and vortex beam generators.

Bound states in the continuum (BIC)-based all-silicon metasurfaces have attracted widespread attention in recent years because of their high quality (Q) factors in terahertz (THz) frequencies. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-silicon BIC metasurface consisting of an air-hole array on a Si substrate. BICs originated from low-order TE and TM guided mode resonances (GMRs) induced by (1,0) and (1,1) Rayleigh diffraction of metagratings, which were numerically investigated. The results indicate that the GMRs and their Q-factors are easily excited and manipulated by breaking the lattice symmetry through changes in the position or radius of the air-holes, while the resonance frequencies are less sensitive to these changes. The measured Q-factor of the GMRs is as high as 490. The high-Q metasurfaces have potential applications in THz modulators, biosensors, and other photonic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Combining with the bound states in the continuum (BICs) theory in all-dielectric metasurfaces has become an extensively used method to excite multiple high quality(Q) factor Fano resonances, which remarkably enhance the performance of structures to be applied to refractive index sensors. In this article, a novel silicon pinwheel-shaped all-dielectric metasurface in the near-infrared region is designed and numerically investigated. Two Fano resonances are excited in the original structures. After breaking the symmetry of the original structures in combination with the BIC theory, four sharp Fano resonances are excited and the maximum Q-factor exceeds 3.9 × 105 when δ = 10 nm. With the asymmetric parameter δ = 80 nm, multiple Fano resonances could be turned on and off by turning the polarization of the incident light, which performs excellent characteristics in optical switches. Both in the original structures and in the asymmetric state it offers outstanding sensing characteristics. Furthermore, with δ = 80 nm and the polarization angle 90 degrees, the sensitivity and the figure of merit (FOM) could respectively reach up to 355 nm/RIU and 1375.97 RIU−1. The designed structures may provide a way to enhance the performance of bio-chemical sensors, optical switches, and nonlinear optics.

We propose and numerically demonstrate high Q-factor sensors based on all-dielectric metasurfaces, which are very sensitive to the change of the refractive index of the surrounding media and the incident angle. By using the light incident angular scanning method, the all-dielectric metasurface based on symmetric tetramer can act as an excellent sensing platform for trace-amount molecules such as protein A/G, 2, 4-DNT, and 2D material graphene with huge absorbance enhancement in the mid-infrared broadband spectrums. The results reveal that envelope of absorbance amplitudes is in good agreement with the vibrational mode of molecules, and absorbance enhancement factors reach as high as 10 dB in the mid-infrared wavelength range from 5.75 to 6.80 μm. To further increase the Q-factor of the resonances, the all-dielectric metasurface based on asymmetric tetramer is investigated. This asymmetric structure can induce toroidal and magnetic dipoles governed by quasi-BIC to produce multi-extremely narrow linewidth Fano resonances, and the maximum sensitivity reaches up to 1.43 μm/RIU. Therefore, the proposed all-dielectric metasurface demonstrates highly enhanced performance in refractive index and chemical information sensing for trace-amount biomolecules, which inspires the development of new high-sensitivity refractive index sensors for the nondestructive identification in the mid-infrared regime.

Recently, improvement of the sensing performance of refractive index sensors using the weak far-field radiation and strong local field enhancement properties of toroidal dipole resonances has been intensively studied. Transmission/reflection spectra with significant narrow linewidth resonance have a vital effect in improving the sensing performance. However, a narrower linewidth always leads to smaller modulation depth of the resonance, which hinders the sensing performance to be improved for experiments. In this paper, we design an ultrathin all-dielectric asymmetric X -type metasurface array, where an extremely narrow linewidth and high modulation depth of transmission resonance in the near-infrared have been demonstrated with Mie lattice resonance formed by the coupling of the toroidal dipole with Rayleigh anomalous diffraction. With optimized structure parameters, a transmission dip with a full width at half-maximum as narrow as 0.061 nm and a modulation depth as high as 99.24% are achieved at a wavelength of 943.33 nm with a corresponding Q factor of 15464. According to the analysis of the displacement current distributions and the scattered powers in the far field at the resonant and nonresonant wavelengths, it is confirmed that the narrow linewidth resonance originates from the coupling of the toroidal dipole with Rayleigh anomalous diffraction. A sensitivity and a figure of merit of 321 nm RIU−1 and 5262 RIU−1 are numerically demonstrated respectively for a refractive index sensor based on the all-dielectric asymmetric X -type metasurface array. The bound state in the continuum (BIC) has paved a new way to achieve excellent localization of the resonant mode coexisting with a continuous spectrum in the metasurface. Here, we propose an all-dielectric metasurface consisting of periodic pairs of asymmetric crosses that supports multiple Fano resonances. Due to the sufficient degrees of freedom in the unit cell, we displaced the vertical bars horizontally to introduce in-plane perturbation, doubling the unit cell structure. Dimerization directly resulted in the folding of the Brillouin zone in k space and transformed the BIC modes into quasi-BIC resonances. Then, simultaneous in-plane symmetry breaking was introduced in both the x and y directions to excite two more resonances. The physical mechanisms of these BIC modes were investigated by multipole decomposition of the scattering cross section and electromagnetic near-field analysis, confirming that they are governed by toroidal dipole (TD) modes and magnetic dipole (MD) modes. We also investigated the flexible tunability and evaluated the sensing performance of our proposed metasurface. Quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BIC) in all-dielectric metasurfaces provide a crucial platform for sensing due to its ability to enhance strong matter interactions between light-waves and analytes. In this study, a novel high-sensitivity all-dielectric sensor composed of a periodic array of silicon (Si) plates with square nanoholes in the continuous near-infrared band is theoretically proposed. By adjusting the position of the square nanohole, the symmetry-protected BIC and Friedrich–Wintgen BIC (FW–BIC) can be excited. The torodial dipole (TD) and electric quadruple (EQ) are demonstrated to play a dominating role in the resonant modes by near-field analysis and multipole decomposition. The results show that the sensitivity, the Q-factor, and the corresponding figure of merit (FOM) can simultaneously reach 399 nm/RIU (RIU is refractive index unit), 4959, and 1281, respectively. Compared with other complex nanostructures, the proposed metasurface is more feasible and practical, which may open up an avenue for the development of ultrasensitive sensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, the concept of bound states in continuum (BIC) in metasurfaces has become a topic of interest. BIC involves the physical mechanics of wave optics, metamaterial sensors and other high-quality factor (Q-factor) applications. In this paper, the basic concept of BIC is introduced, followed by a brief description of the progression of the research regarding the application of BIC in terahertz (THz) metasurfaces. Subsequently, an all-dielectric metasurface consisting of tetramer clusters with dual terahertz resonances is proposed. The materials used for the substrate and the tetramer cluster are quartz and silicon, respectively. Quasi-BIC works by varying the cylinder radius on the metasurface structure. The transmission spectra are analyzed under different structural and material parameters with control variables. When the metasurface is applied as a refractive-index sensor, the Q-factor is 2303.77 and the figure of merit (FOM) is 7022.90, which are calculated using the asymmetric parameter k = 0.8 μm. Additionally, when the incident wave is x- or y-polarized, resonance peaks with the same frequencies can be obtained, and the overall trend of the transmission spectrum remains the same.

While optical pulse shapers have important applications in classical and quantum communication regimes and laser resonant cavities, engineering of group delay dispersion (GDD) remains one of their greatest challenges. Herein, by taking advantage of the electrically tunable optical properties of 2D material and the low‐loss nature of dielectric material. This paper demonstrates how an active tunable all‐dielectric metasurface assisted by 2D material can be leveraged to shape the temporal profile of a pulse. The proposed metasurface consists of an array of nanobars covered by a 2D sheet and positioned on a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) as a perfect mirror to design a phase‐only modulator. Upon introducing in‐plane asymmetries, the quasi‐bound state in the continuum (QBIC) resonance emerges under normal incidence, which subsequently leads to achieving both significant GDD and the two regimes of pulse stretching and compressing via boosting the effect of the permittivity variation of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). The monolayer MoS2 proves to be an excellent substitute for other tunable materials with inherent dissipative loss in the visible frequency range. Following such an active tunable geometrically fixed configuration, various pulse‐shaping operations are achieved, including compression (peak intensity up to 350%), expansion (peak intensity from 60%), splitting, and higher‐order distortion.

One of the fastest-expanding study areas in optics over the past decade has been metasurfaces (MSs). These subwavelength meta-atom-based ultrathin arrays have been developed for a broad range of functions, including lenses, polarization control, holography, coloring, spectroscopy, sensors, and many more. They allow exact control of the many properties of electromagnetic waves. The performance of MSs has dramatically improved because of recent developments in nanofabrication methods, and this concept has developed to the point that it may be used in commercial applications. In this review, a vital topic of sensing has been considered and an up-to-date study has been carried out. Three different kinds of MS absorber sensor formations, all-dielectric, all-metallic, and hybrid configurations, are presented for biochemical sensing applications. Metasurfaces have emerged as game-changing technology ranging from microwaves to optics. This article provides a roadmap to the evolution of electromagnetic metasurfaces with a focus on their synthesis techniques, materials used for their design and their recent and futuristic applications. A broad classification is provided, and the design principle is elaborated. The efficient and economical use of available computational resources is imperative to work with state-of-the-art metasurface systems. Hence, optimization becomes an integral part of metasurface design. Several optimization methodologies reported to date have been discussed. An extensive study on the current research database gathered a comprehensive understanding of meta-atom topologies and the preferred fabrication technologies. A metasurface is a planar structure that can be utilized to manipulate the amplitude, phase, and polarization of light on a subwavelength scale. Although a variety of functional optical devices based on metasurface have been proposed, the simultaneous transmission of different types of polarized waves has rarely been reported. The transmission of polarized waves with different types plays an important role in the fields of wavelength division multiplexing, quantum cryptography, and quantum computing. The simulated results in this work demonstrate that the independent manipulation of transmitted waves can be realized by the designed all-dielectric metasurface, and different types of polarized waves can be simultaneously generated. In addition, different optical responses under orthogonal circularly polarized wave incidences can be generated by this metasurface. The proposed method provides potential applications for the development of integrated optical quantum information transmission and the design of integrated optical systems on a chip. Compared with the traditional micro-nano device design method, the data-driven neural network model method can greatly improve the inverse design efficiency of micro-nano structures with tiny design errors. Micro-nano structures based on the Fano resonance effect are widely used and have various functions. In recent years, researchers have attached great importance to its inverse design. This paper addresses the application requirements of the Fano resonance effect and develops a Gramian angular field-Convolutional Neural Network-Long Short Term Memory (GAF–CNN–LSTM) hybrid model based on the Gramian angular field transition. The model takes the designed nanohole all-dielectric metasurface structure as an example. This structure can produce different types of Fano resonance effects under different parameter combinations, implement different types of Fano resonances relative to multiple structures,the proposed structure can be realized by dynamic tuning of a single structure to obtain multi-Fano resonances, thus better application to different sensors.Through the ablation experiments and the contrast experiments, the results indicate that the proposed hybrid model can achieve high-precision inverse prediction of multifunctional Fano resonance effects, with a model accuracy of up to 95%. The data evince a remarkable alignment between the Q-factor derived from fitting the Fano resonances and that computed through FWHM. Multipole decomposition and electromagnetic field distributions indicate dual-resonance modes are controlled by toroidal dipole (TD) and magnetic dipole (MD). The maximum sensitivity to the refractive index is 3666 nm/RIU, the maximum FoM is 55,302 RIU−1, and the polarization is insensitive. Gas sensors can be developed by filling the metasurface structure with hydrogen and methane-sensitive films. An all-dielectric metasurface composed of orthogonal-slit silicon disks is proposed in this study. By modifying the unit structure of the metasurface with the bound states in the continuum (BICs), a sharp Fano resonance can be generated. The resonance properties of the metasurface are investigated by analyzing the effects of the structural parameters on the resonance using the eigenmode analysis method. The Q factor and the resonance wavelength can be adjusted by varying the slit width, the disk thickness, and the disk radius. The electromagnetic characteristics and mechanism of the toroidal dipole BICs (TD-BICs) are explored in depth through an analysis of the multipole expansion of the scattered power, along with the electromagnetic field and the current distribution at resonance. This research provides a novel approach for the excitation of strong TD-BIC resonance and proposes potential applications in optical switches, high-sensitivity optical sensors, and related areas.

Bound states in the continuum (BIC)-based all-silicon metasurfaces have attracted widespread attention in recent years because of their high quality (Q) factors in terahertz (THz) frequencies. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-silicon BIC metasurface consisting of an air-hole array on a Si substrate. BICs originated from low-order TE and TM guided mode resonances (GMRs) induced by (1,0) and (1,1) Rayleigh diffraction of metagratings, which were numerically investigated. The results indicate that the GMRs and their Q-factors are easily excited and manipulated by breaking the lattice symmetry through changes in the position or radius of the air-holes, while the resonance frequencies are less sensitive to these changes. The measured Q-factor of the GMRs is as high as 490. The high-Q metasurfaces have potential applications in THz modulators, biosensors, and other photonic devices.

The problem of investigating the features of the anisotropic resonant response of single silicon nanoparticles with irregular shapes and metasurfaces fabricated from them is considered. The sizes of single nanoscale silicon cuboids were tuned for excitation of the dipole resonances in the near-infrared spectral range, and the metasurfaces composed of such nanoparticles were fabricated on a quartz substrate using lithographic methods. It is shown that the presence of the defect in the form of a cut edge of a nanoscale cuboid leads to the resonant excitation of minor components of the electric and magnetic dipole moments oriented perpendicularly to the polarization of the incident wave. The spectral position of such minor components for a cuboid with a defect corresponds to the position of the resonance of the main component for the same multipole in a cuboid without a defect. We performed the numerical optimization and determined the conditions for excitation of a resonant response for the cross-polarization component of the wave reflected from the metasurface composed of nanoscale cuboids with a defect. The developed method allows creating of the metasurfaces rotating the polarization plane, which can be used for the creation of the nanolayer polarization metacoatings allowing the polarization conversion. Terahertz (THz) linear-to-circular (LTC) polarization conversion plays a crucial role in imaging and 6G wireless communication. This paper will give an account of a thermally tunable THz LTC polarization converter by using the active all-dielectric metasurface. It consists of zirconium oxide (ZrO2) microsphere resonators, active strontium titanate (STO) cladding, and flexible polyimide substrate. Through numerical simulation, the amplitude of the ellipticity of the proposed polarization converter at 0.265 THz is -1, indicating that perfect right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) wave is achieved. Meanwhile, the amplitude of the ellipticity is less than -0.8 between 0.247 and 0.278 THz (relative bandwidth is 12%). In addition, with the temperature changes of 180 K (from 200 to 380 K), the operating frequency of the converter can be tuned from 0.220 to 0.291 THz, a sensitivity about 39 GHz/100 K is achieved. Besides, the modulation depth of the ellipticity amplitude can achieve 92% at 0.220 THz, which demonstrates that the converter can output terahertz wave with different polarization states, and the device can be fabricated on a large scale. Terahertz (THz) orbital angular momentum (OAM) technology provides promising applications in future wireless communication with large bandwidth and high capacity. However, the ring radius of the conventional THz vortex beam is related to the topological charge, limiting the co-propagation of multiple OAM modes in the THz communication systems. Although the perfect vortex beam (PVB) based on traditional methods can solve this problem, they are usually bulky and unstable. Here, we demonstrate two PVB generators based on a single all-dielectric metasurface to obtain polarization-independent PVB and spin multiplexed PVB, respectively. The former regulates the propagation phase by using isotropic unit cells; the latter simultaneously manipulates the propagation and geometric phase to achieve the spin-decoupled phase control by arranging anisotropic unit cells. In addition, we also demonstrate the stable generation of a perfect Poincaré beam with arbitrary polarization and phase distribution on a hybrid-order Poincaré Sphere via a spin-decoupled metasurface, which is achieved by the linear superposition of two PVBs with orthogonal circular polarizations. The proposed scheme provides a compact and efficient platform for the generation and superposition of PVBs in THz region, and will speed up the progress of THz communication systems, complex light field generation, and quantum information sciences. One compound metasurface with multiple functions and precise complex amplitude modulation is beneficial to photonic integration. Here, all-silicon bifunctional metasurfaces capable of independent amplitude and phase modulation in two circular polarized channels are proposed, which encode complex amplitude information by integrating propagation phase and Pancharatnam-Berry phase. A switchable power-controllable axial bifocal metalens directly illustrates the feasibility of the proposed modulation scheme. Another switchable power-controllable horizontal/vertical bifocal metalens characterizes the versatility and flexibility of this approach. The experimental results agree well with the simulations and theoretical expectations. In addition, we also discuss the broadband performance of the proposed metalens and the dynamic focusing behavior under optical pumping. The proposed approach can directly generate editable amplitude and phase profiles and can find applications in dynamic holography, dynamic display, and other fields.

The realization of high-Q resonances in a silicon metasurface with various broken-symmetry blocks is reported. Theoretical analysis reveals that the sharp resonances in the metasurfaces originate from symmetry-protected bound in the continuum (BIC) and the magnetic dipole dominates these peculiar states. A smaller size of the defect in the broken-symmetry block gives rise to the resonance with a larger Q factor. Importantly, this relationship can be tuned by changing the structural parameter, resulting from the modulation of the topological configuration of BICs. Consequently, a Q factor of more than 3,000 can be easily achieved by optimizing dimensions of the nanostructure. At this sharp resonance, the intensity of the third harmonic generation signal in the patterned structure can be 368 times larger than that of the flat silicon film. The proposed strategy and underlying theory can open up new avenues to realize ultrasharp resonances, which may promote the development of the potential meta-devices for nonlinearity, lasing action, and sensing.

The quasi-bound states in the continuum (QBIC) have drawn increasing attention in optical metasurfaces derived from their ultrahigh quality factors, and show the utility to enhance the sensitivity of optical sensing. However, conventional single-resonance sensing may be inaccurate and unreliable, and then the dual-resonance sensing governed by the coupled QBIC is desired but remains elusive. Here, we show that the coupled QBIC modes can be leveraged to unfold dual-resonance refractive index sensing in the hybrid all-dielectric metasurface. Specifically, it is revealed that the toroidal dipole mode can be realized with strong electric field enhancement, enabling the implementation of anapole mode in the telecom short-wavelength band (1460–1530 nm). Under different linearly polarized illuminations, the dual symmetry-protected QBIC modes dominated by the electric quadrupole resonance can be fulfilled in the telecom extended-wavelength band (1360–1460 nm). Within this framework, the polarization-dependent dual symmetry-protected QBIC modes selectively coupled with the toroidal dipole mode or the anapole mode can not only uncover the transformation from Fano resonance to analog of electromagnetically induced transparency, but also manifest two types of high-sensitivity dual-resonance refractive index sensing in the telecom extended-wavelength and short-wavelength bands. The dual-resonance refractive index sensing can also be extended to telecom long-wavelength band (1565–1625 nm) and ultra-long-wavelength band (1625–1675 nm) with enhanced sensitivity. • A C2 asymmetry four-leaf clover structure is proposed to introduce the quasi-BIC. • The maximum quality factor and figure of merit are 10,383 and 2250RIU-1, respectively. • The response of the structure to polarized light is explored. • The multipole excitation mode is analyzed by multipole decomposition method. A high Q-factor resonant cavity indicates minimal energy loss at the resonance frequency. In this paper, we propose a four-leaf clover sensor with air pillars based on the all-dielectric metasurface and discuss the C 2 asymmetric induced quasi-bound states in the continuum(quasi-BIC). Firstly, we obtain dual Fano resonance by C 2 symmetric configuration. Secondly, by introducing C 2 asymmetric parameters, leading to a new Fano resonance peak, and the Q-factor exceeds 104. Furthermore, When the incident laser changes from TE mode to TM mode, the original Fano resonance peaks gradually disappear, and a new peak is generated near the 1273 nm. The calculated polarization sensitivity is up to 0.012 per degree. The dynamic range (DR) of the peak value of transmission spectrum with polarization is 58 dB. Dielectric metasurface supporting quasibound states in the continuum (QBIC) are expected to be applied to high-performance optical devices such as refractive index (RI) sensors, narrow band filters, optical switches, and nonlinear optics due to its ultra-narrow linewidth resonance. Here, we design a metasurface consisting of four parallel-arranged silicon elliptical nanodisks, with a silicon circular nanodisk in its center as a coupler, which can relax the conditions for achieving QBIC. It is found that dual-band mid-infrared high Q resonance is generated when the radius of the circular nanodisk is 370 nm, with Q factors of 12,677 and 4362. Their sensitivities are 604.55 nm/RIU and 2307.57 nm/RIU, with the figure of merit values (FOM) of 1400 RIU−1 and 1792 RIU−1. The electric field analysis shows that the resonant modes of the structure are electric quadrupole and electric dipole. This work examines a symmetry-protected bound state in the continuum (BIC) supported unique all-dielectric dome-shaped metasurface (MS). The simple unit MS is made up of four dome-shaped nanobars of silicon in the top layer and silica glass as the substrate. Two strong transmission dips denoted as an electric dipole (ED) and magnetic dipole (MD) quasi-BIC with high Q-factor that surpasses the value of 1 0 4 are observed after the symmetry between the nanobars is broken by a small angle from their initial position. A crossover between the ED and MD resonances is noticed when the periodicity of the MS is changed in the y direction. In addition, transmission spectra show the avoided-crossing phenomenon of dipole quasi-BIC resonances when the superstrate's refractive index (RI) is reduced from its initial value. Other widely used dielectric materials are additionally employed in dome-shaped nanobars to evaluate their performances in terms of sharpness and near-zero transmission. Moreover, Other forms of symmetry breakdown such as diagonal width and length asymmetry have been investigated for their impact on the Q-factor. Finally, we have demonstrated two significant applications, including refractometric glucose sensing and third harmonic generation (THG). Our dome-shaped MS is roughly 300 times more efficient at generating third harmonics than a flat rectangular silicon film MS. The bound state in the continuum (BIC) has paved a new way to achieve excellent localization of the resonant mode coexisting with a continuous spectrum in the metasurface. Here, we propose an all-dielectric metasurface consisting of periodic pairs of asymmetric crosses that supports multiple Fano resonances. Due to the sufficient degrees of freedom in the unit cell, we displaced the vertical bars horizontally to introduce in-plane perturbation, doubling the unit cell structure. Dimerization directly resulted in the folding of the Brillouin zone in k space and transformed the BIC modes into quasi-BIC resonances. Then, simultaneous in-plane symmetry breaking was introduced in both the x and y directions to excite two more resonances. The physical mechanisms of these BIC modes were investigated by multipole decomposition of the scattering cross section and electromagnetic near-field analysis, confirming that they are governed by toroidal dipole (TD) modes and magnetic dipole (MD) modes. We also investigated the flexible tunability and evaluated the sensing performance of our proposed metasurface. Our work is promising for different applications requiring stable and tunable resonances, such as optical switching and biomolecule sensing.

The optical vortex (OV) beams characterized by orbital angular momentum (OAM) possess ubiquitous applications in optical communication and nanoparticle manipulation. Particularly, the vortex vector beams are important in classical physics and quantum sciences. Here, based on an all-dielectric transmission metasurface platform, we demonstrate a spin-multiplexed metadevice combining propagation phase and Pancharatnam–Berry (PB) phase. By utilizing a phase-only modulation method, the metadevice can generate spin-dependent and multidimensional focused optical vortex (FOV) under the orthogonally circularly polarized incident light, and it can successfully realize the multiplexed of the above-mentioned FOVs for linearly polarized light. Meanwhile, the superposition of multiple OAM states can also produce vector vortex beams with different modes. Additionally, the evolution process of the electric field intensity profile is presented after the resultant vector vortex beams through a horizontal linear polarization. This work paves an innovative way for generating structured beams, and it provides promising opportunities for advanced applications in optical data storage, optical micromanipulation, and data communication. Toroidal dipole (TD) with weak coupling to the electromagnetic fields offers tremendous potential for advanced design of photonic devices. However, the excitation of high quality (Q) factor TD resonances in these devices is challenging. Here, we investigate ultrahigh-Q factor TD resonances at terahertz frequencies arising from a distortion of symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum (BIC) in all-dielectric metasurface consisting of an array of high-index tetramer clusters. By elaborately arranging the cylinders forming an asymmetric cluster, two distinct TD resonances governed by BIC are excited and identified. One is distinguished as intracluster TD mode that occurs in the interior of tetramer cluster, and the other one is intercluster TD mode that arises from the two neighboring clusters. Such TD resonances can be turned into ultrahigh-Q leaky resonances by controlling the asymmetry of cluster. The low-loss TD resonances with extremely narrow linewidth are very sensitive to the change in the refractive index of the surrounding media, achieving ultrahigh sensitivity level of 489 GHz/RIU. These findings will open up an avenue to develop ultrasensitive photonic sensor in the terahertz regime.

Metamaterials can achieve superior electromagnetic properties over natural materials by adjusting the structure of the meta-atoms. Chiral metamaterials have been widely used in circular dichroism (CD) spectra, polarization imaging, and optical sensing. Here we propose a kind of all-silicon coding metasurfaces to achieve the function similar to chirality by spin decoupling. One of the two circularly polarized (CP) channels is scattered randomly, and the desired function is only designed in the other opposite CP channel. Three kinds of coding metasurfaces are designed to verify the reliability of such approach: one simultaneously possessing dual function of transmitting directly and scattering randomly, one capable of generating the superposition state of vortex beam, and the other generating the Bessel vortex beam, respectively. And some experimental verifications are carried out. This scheme is simpler and more versatile than previous schemes which require elaborate designed structure of the meta-atoms. Our novel approach provides a new option for implementing tunable chirality.

Cylindrical vector beams (CVBs), being a special kind of beams with spatially variant states of polarizations, are promising in photonics applications, including high-resolution imaging, plasmon excitation, optical trapping, and laser machining. Recently, generating CVBs using metasurfaces has drawn enormous interest owing to their highly designable, multifunctional, and integratable features. However, related studies remain unexplored in the terahertz regime. Here, a generic method for efficiently generating terahertz CVBs carrying orbital angular momentums (OAMs) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated using transmission-type spatial-variant dielectric metasurfaces, which is realized by designing the interference between the two circularly polarized transmission components. This method is based on spin-decoupled phase control allowed by simultaneously manipulating the dynamic phase and geometric phase of each structure, endowing more degree of freedom in designing the vector beams. Two types of metasurfaces which respectively generate polarization-dependent terahertz vector vortex beams (VVBs) and vector Bessel beams (VBBs) are experimentally characterized. The proposed method opens a new window to generate versatile vector beams, providing new capabilities in developing novel, compact, and high-performance devices applicable to broad electromagnetic spectral regimes.

The development of all-dielectric metasurfaces vigorously prompts the applications of optical metasurfaces for the visible and near-IR light range. Compared to IR or longer wavelength light, visible and near-IR light have shorter wavelengths. As a result, surface roughness and imperfections of all-dielectric metasurfaces have larger scattering or absorption of visible and near-IR light, thereby directly affecting the performance of an all-dielectric metasurface. In this article, a volume-current method is adopted to study the effect of metasurface roughness. Numerical calculations based on the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method are also used to study the relationship between the effects of metasurface roughness and the optical resonant modes. Numerical predictions based on our theoretical studies fit the experimental data well. Further, the effect of different roughness levels on the all-dielectric metasurface performance is predicted. More importantly, a method utilizing resonant-mode engineering to enhance the metasurface performance (e.g. incident angle insensitivity) is also proposed and demonstrated. This work deepens our understanding of the working mechanism of all-dielectric metasurfaces and paves the way for their use in a broad spectrum of applications.

High-index dielectric nanostructures have emerged as an appealing complement to plasmonic nanostructures, offering similar light management capabilities at the nanoscale but free from the inherent optical losses. Despite the great interest in these all-dielectric architectures, their fabrication still requires cumbersome fabrication techniques that limit their implementation in many applications. Hence, the great interest in alternative scalable procedures. Among those, the fabrication of silicon spheres is at the forefront, with several routes available in the literature. However, the exploitation of the Mie modes sustained by these silicon resonators is limited over large areas by polydispersity or a lack of long-range order. Here, we present an all-dielectric metamaterial fabricated with a low cost and highly scalable technique: a combination of soft imprinting nanolithography and chemical vapor deposition. The resulting all-dielectric metasurface is composed of an array of silicon hemispheres on top of a high refractive index dielectric substrate. This architecture allows the exploitation of high-quality Mie resonances at a large scale due to the high monodispersity of the hemispheres organized in a single crystal two-dimensional lattice. The optical response of the metasurface can be engineered by the design parameters of the nanoimprinted structure. We further demonstrate the potential of this platform to enhance light emission by coupling dye molecules to the sustained Mie resonances and measuring both an eight-fold amplified signal and a triple lifetime reduction.

An all-dielectric Huygens' transmit-array is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in the 120-GHz-band. The proposed transmit-array is fabricated using a high-precision laser-drilling process providing high fabrication precision and accuracy. A non-uniform Huygens' surface is next placed on top of a planar high gain slot-array antenna for far-field beamforming. Full-wave simulations are first used to demonstrate the beamforming capability by generating difference-pattern beams as an example. A uniform transmit-array was then fabricated and characterized to investigate the effect of the transmit-array on the antenna performance, along with showing very low fabrication tolerances and minimal dimensional variation due to the laser drilling process. Next, a phase-gradient transmit-array for beam-tilting is experimentally demonstrated as a practical example of beamforming. The proposed all-dielectric structure is the first Huygens' structure to be demonstrated at these frequency bands, and represents an attractive alternative to conventional metallic Huygens' metasurfaces based on standard printed circuit board (PCB) solutions.
