This review comprehensively examines the phenomenon of photoinhibition in plants, focusing mainly on the intricate relationship between photodamage and photosystem II (PSII) repair and the role of PSII extrinsic proteins and protein phosphorylation in these processes. In natural environments, photoinhibition occurs together with a suite of concurrent stress factors, including extreme temperatures, drought and salinization. Photoinhibition, primarily caused by high irradiance, results in a critical imbalance between the rate of PSII photodamage and its repair. Central to this process is the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which not only impair the photosynthetic apparatus first PSII but also play a signalling role in chloroplasts and other cellulular structures. ROS generated under stress conditions inhibit the repair of photodamaged PSII by suppressing D1 protein synthesis and affecting PSII protein phosphorylation. Furthermore, this review considers how environmental stressors exacerbate PSII damage by interfering with PSII repair primarily by reducing de novo protein synthesis. In addition to causing direct damage, these stressors also contribute to ROS production by restricting CO 2 fixation, which also reduces the intensity of protein synthesis. The effects of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), both alone and in combination with mineral nutrients, on the growth and photosynthesis of Solanum lycopersicum plants during ontogeny were studied. The experiment involved weekly applications of 10 μmol of AgNPs for 15 weeks in a greenhouse over a summer period. A comprehensive characterization of the AgNPs was performed via TEM, ESI/EELS, and zeta potential measurements before and throughout the experiment. The activity of PSII, stomatal conductivity, photosynthesis, transpiration and respiration rates were measured, and the photosynthetic pigments, chloroplast ultrastructure, and dry and fresh masses of leaves, roots, and fruits were assessed. The results indicated that combining AgNPs with mineral nutrients increased PSII activity and the photosynthesis rate and altered the chloroplast ultrastructure. However, the use of mineral nutrients or AgNPs alone did not induce these changes. Atomic absorption spectrometry detected AgNPs in all the plant organs except the fruits. The highest fruit yield was associated with Veni Prisma®, a commercial product containing colloidal silver, which also caused desynchronized fruit maturation. This study hypothesizes that the synergistic effect of AgNPs and mineral nutrients enhances silver accumulation in chloroplasts, improving light utilization and photosynthetic efficiency, particularly under low light, thus increasing fruit quantity and dry mass. Soil salinity, which affects plant photosynthesis mechanisms, significantly limits plant productivity. Soil microorganisms, including cyanobacteria, can synthesize various exometabolites that contribute to plant growth and development in several ways. These microorganisms can increase plant tolerance to salt stress by secreting various phytoprotectants; therefore, it is highly relevant to study soil microorganisms adapted to high salinity and investigate their potential to increase plant resistance to salt stress. This study evaluated the antioxidant activity of four cyanobacterial strains: Spirulina platensis Calu-532, Nostoc sp. J-14, Trichormus variabilis K-31, and Oscillatoria brevis SH-12. Among these, Nostoc sp. J-14 presented the highest antioxidant activity. Their growth-stimulating effects under saline conditions were also assessed under laboratory conditions. These results indicate that Nostoc sp. J-14 and T. variabilis K-31 show significant promise in mitigating the harmful effects of salinity on plant size and weight. Both strains notably enhanced the growth of Oryza sativa plants under saline conditions, suggesting their potential as biostimulants to improve crop productivity in saline environments. This research underscores the importance of understanding the mechanisms by which cyanobacteria increase plant tolerance to salt stress, paving the way for sustainable agricultural practices in saline areas.

Enhancing crop photosynthesis through genetic engineering technologies offers numerous opportunities to increase plant productivity. Key approaches include optimizing light utilization, increasing cytochrome b 6 f complex levels, and improving carbon fixation. Modifications to Rubisco and the photosynthetic electron transport chain are central to these strategies. Introducing alternative photorespiratory pathways and enhancing carbonic anhydrase activity can further increase the internal CO 2 concentration, thereby improving photosynthetic efficiency. The efficient translocation of photosynthetically produced sugars, which are managed by sucrose transporters, is also critical for plant growth. Additionally, incorporating genes from C 4 plants, such as phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase and NADP-malic enzymes, enhances the CO 2 concentration around Rubisco, reducing photorespiration. Targeting microRNAs and transcription factors is vital for increasing photosynthesis and plant productivity, especially under stress conditions. This review highlights potential biological targets, the genetic modifications of which are aimed at improving photosynthesis and increasing plant productivity, thereby determining key areas for future research and development.

All aerobic life on Earth depends on oxygenic photosynthesis, occurring in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. This process can be divided into light reactions and carbon fixation. This special issue is a result of the International Conference on "Photosynthesis and Hydrogen Energy Research for Sustainability 2023," held in honor of Robert Blankenship, Győző Garab, Michael Grätzel, Norman Hüner, and Gunnar Öquist. After extensive discussions on various aspects of photosynthesis and hydrogen energy, eight high-quality papers were selected. These papers cover studies on abiotic stress, an overview of photosynthesis, thylakoid membrane lipid organization, energy transfer, and the genomics of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic photosynthesis, as well as biohydrogen production from cyanobacteria. Widespread ecosystem degradation from noxious substances like industrial waste, toxic dyes, pesticides, and herbicides poses serious environmental risks. For remediation of these hazardous problems, present study introduces an innovative Cu-doped Ce₂Zr₂O₇ nano-photocatalyst, fabricated via a simple, eco-friendly hydrothermal method, designed to degrade toxic textile dye methylene blue. Harnessing Cu doping for pyrochlore Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 , structure engineering carried out through a hydrothermal synthesis method to achieve superior photocatalytic performance, addressing limitations of rapid charge carrier recombination in existing photocatalysts. Photoluminescence analysis showed that doped pyrochlore slows charge carrier recombination, boosting dye degradation efficiency. UV-Visible analysis demonstrated an impressive 96 % degradation of methylene blue by Cu-doped Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 within 50 min, far exceeding the performance of pristine materials. Trapping experiments clarified the charge transfer mechanism, deepening our understanding of the photocatalytic process. These findings highlight the potential for developing innovative, highly efficient photocatalysts for environmental remediation, offering sustainable solutions to combat pollution. The increase in industrialization has led to an exponential increase in heavy metal (HM) soil contamination, which poses a serious threat to public health and ecosystem stability. This review emphasizes the urgent need to develop innovative technologies for the environmental remediation of intensive anthropogenic pollution. Phytoremediation is a sustainable and cost-effective approach for the detoxification of contaminated soils using various plant species. This review discusses in detail the basic principles of phytoremediation and emphasizes its ecological advantages over other methods for cleaning contaminated areas and its technical viability. Much attention has been given to the selection of hyperaccumulator plants for phytoremediation that can grow on heavy metal-contaminated soils, and the biochemical mechanisms that allow these plants to isolate, detoxify, and accumulate heavy metals are discussed in detail. The novelty of our study lies in reviewing the mechanisms of plant-microorganism interactions that greatly enhance the efficiency of phytoremediation as well as in discussing genetic modifications that could revolutionize the cleanup of contaminated soils. Moreover, this manuscript discusses potential applications of phytoremediation beyond soil detoxification, including its role in bioenergy production and biodiversity restoration in degraded habitats. This review concludes by listing the serious problems that result from anthropogenic environmental pollution that future generations still need to overcome and suggests promising research directions in which the integration of nano- and biotechnology will play an important role in enhancing the effectiveness of phytoremediation. These contributions are critical for environmental scientists, policy makers, and practitioners seeking to utilize phytoremediation to maintain the ecological stability of the environment and its restoration.

Polyaniline (PANI) stands out as a highly promising conducting polymer with potential for advanced utilization in high-performance pseudocapacitors. Therefore, there exists a pressing need to bolster the structural durability of PANI, achievable by developing composite materials that can enhance its viability for supercapacitor applications. In this particular study, a pioneering approach was undertaken to produce a novel NiMn 2 O 4 /PANI supercapacitor electrode material. A comprehensive array of analytical techniques was employed to ascertain the structural configuration, morphology, oxidation states of elements, composition, and surface characteristics of the electrode material. The electrochemical evaluation of the NiMn 2 O 4 /PANI composite shows a specific capacitance ( C s ) of 1530 ± 2 F g -1 at 1 A g -1 . Significantly, the composite material displays an outstanding 93.61% retention of its capacity after an extensive 10 000 cycles, signifying remarkable cycling stability, while the 2-electrode configuration reveals a C s value of 764 F g -1 at 5 mV s -1 and 826 F g -1 at 1 A g -1 with a smaller charge transfer resistance ( R ct ) value of 0.67 Ω. Chronoamperometric tests showed excellent stability of the fabricated material up to 50 h. This significant advancement bears immense promise for its potential implementation in high-efficiency energy storage systems and heralds a new phase in the development of supercapacitor technology with improved stability and performance metrics.

DNA methylation is one of induced changes under salinity stress causing reduction in the expression of several crucial genes required for normal plant's operation. Potential use of royal jelly (RJ), folic acid (FA) and 5-azacitidine (5-AZA) on two Egyptian faba bean varieties (Sakha-3 and Giza-716) grown under saline conditions was investigated. Salinity stress affects negatively on seeds germination (G %), mitotic index, membrane stability and induced a significant increase in chromosomal abnormalities (CAs). DNA methyltransferases genes ( MT1 and MT2 ) were highly up-regulated (∼23 and 8 folds for MT1 and MT2 in shoots of Giza-716 stressed plants). On the other hand, down regulation of other studied stress related genes: superoxide dismutase ( SOD ), catalase (CAT ), glutathione reductase ( GR ), heat shock protein ( HSP-17.9 ) and proline-rich protein ( GPRP ) were detected in stressed plants of both studied varieties. Treating plants with RJ and FA increase G%, chlorophyll content, improves membrane properties and reduces CAs compared to non-treated stressed plants. Exogenous application of 5-AZA, RJ and FA on salinity stressed plants was associated with a significant reduction in the transcription of MT1 and MT2 which was associated with significant up regulation in the expression of Cu/Zn-SOD , CAT , GR , GPRP and HSP-17.9 encoding genes. The Lowest expression of MT1 and MT2 were induced with 5-AZA treatment in both studied varieties. Biomineralization in plant roots refers to the process of cell-induced self-assembly to form nanostructures on the root surface. Silicon (Si) is the second most abundant element in soils, and beneficial to plant growth. Meanwhile, silicon is shown to participate in the process of biomineralization, which is useful for improving mechanical strength and alleviating biotic and abiotic stress, for example silicic acid polymerizes to form amorphous silica (SiO 2 -nH 2 O) in the process of growing to resist fungi and environmental stress. This process alters physical and chemical properties of cell wall. However, the mechanistic basis of this process remains unclear. Aluminum toxicity is a major constraint affecting plant performance in acid soil. This paper summarizes recent research advances in the field of plant biomineralization and describes the effects of silicon biomineralization on plant aluminum tolerance and its adaptive significance, using aluminum toxicity as a case study.

There is currently an escalating global demand for the utilization of plant and natural extracts as pesticides due to their minimal health risks. Cyanobacteria are highly valuable organisms with significant potential in agriculture and are of great interest for the development of agrochemical agents as biopesticides. The flexibility and adaptability of Cyanobacteria to various environmental conditions are facilitated by the presence of specialized enzymes involved in the production of biologically active diverse secondary metabolites, including alkaloids, lipopolysaccharides, non-protein amino acids, non-ribosomal peptides, polyketides, terpenoids, and others. This review focuses on the metabolites synthesized from cyanobacteria that have demonstrated effectiveness as antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal agents, insecticides, herbicides, and more. The effects of high-intensity light on the pigment content, photosynthetic rate, and fluorescence parameters of photosystem II in high-pigment tomato mutants ( hp 3005) and low-pigment mutants ( lp 3617) were investigated. This study also evaluated the dry weight percentage of low molecular weight antioxidant capacity, expression patterns of some photoreceptor-regulated genes, and structural aspects of leaf mesophyll cells. The 3005 mutant displayed increased levels of photosynthetic pigments and anthocyanins, whereas the 3617 mutant demonstrated a heightened content of ultraviolet-absorbing pigments. The photosynthetic rate, photosystem II activity, antioxidant capacity, and carotenoid content were most pronounced in the high-pigment mutant after 72 h exposure to intense light. This mutant also exhibited an increase in leaf thickness and water content when exposed to high-intensity light, suggesting superior physiological adaptability and reduced photoinhibition. Our findings indicate that the enhanced adaptability of the high-pigment mutant might be attributed to increased flavonoid and carotenoid contents, leading to augmented expression of key genes associated with pigment synthesis and light regulation.

Soil salinisation is one of the main abiotic stresses decreasing crop productivity. Here, we show that the plant treatment with iron oxide (Fe3 O4 ) nanoparticles (NPs) may be a promising solution for reducing the negative impact of soil salinity on plant performance. For this purpose, effects of the NPs on growth, photosynthesis, pro-/antioxidant, redox balance and the content of mineral elements in 19-day-old wheat (Triticum aestivum ) plants under soil salinity were studied. Seed treatment with NPs (200 and 500mg L-1 ) enhanced growth and photosynthetic rate in leaves. Moderate salinity stress (150mMNaCl) led to a decrease in plant biomass as well as the rate of photosynthesis and PSII activity; leaf photosynthetic characteristics were also suppressed by lower (75mMNaCl) salinity treatment. However, seed pre-treatment with the NPs partially eliminated the negative effect of the salt on growth, PSII activity and photosynthesis. Also, we observed a decrease in the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) and an increase in ascorbate and total peroxidase activity in the plant leaves upon combined treatment with NaCl and the NPs compared with treatment with NaCl alone. The combined treatment with the NPs and salinity also led to a noticeable increase in the content of Fe and Mn in the shoot. It was concluded that Fe3 O4 NPs can enhance plant growth by improving photosynthetic characteristics, antioxidant balance and the availability of iron and manganese ions, under conditions of soil salinisation.

Impairing plant growth and reducing crop production, salinity is considered as major problem in modern agriculture. The current study aimed to investigate the role of seeds' heat pretreatment at 45 °C as well as application of two different nanoparticles nanosilica (N1) and nanoselenium (N2) in reducing salinity stress in three genotypes of Egyptian commercial soybeans ( Glycine max L.). Two levels of salt stress using diluted sea water (1/12 and 1/6) were tested either alone or in combination with protective treatments. Obtained results revealed that salinity caused a significant reduction in all tested physiological parameters such as germination rate and membrane stability in soybean plants. A significant reduction in mitotic index and arrest in metaphase were recorded under both tested levels of salinity. It was also revealed that chromosomal abnormalities in soybean plants were positively correlated with the applied salinity concentrations. The fragmentation effect of salinity on the nuclear DNA was investigated and confirmed using Comet assay analysis. Seeds heat pre-treatment (45 °C) and both types of nanoparticles' treatments yielded positive effects on both the salt-stressed and unstressed plants. Quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis for salt stress responsive marker genes revealed that most studied genes ( CAT , APX , DHN2 , CAB3 , GMPIPL6 and GMSALT3 ) responded favorably to protective treatments. The modulation in gene expression pattern was associated with improving growth vigor and salinity tolerance in soybean plants. Marchantia polymorpha is a convenient model for studying light of different spectral compositions on various physiological and biochemical processes because its photoreceptor system is vastly simplified. The influence of red light (RL, 660 nm), far-red light (FRL, 730 nm), blue light (BL, 450 nm), and green light (GL, 525 nm) compared to white light (high-pressure sodium light (HPSL), white LEDs (WL 450 + 580 nm) and white fluorescent light (WFL) on photosynthetic and transpiration rates, photosystem II (PSII) activity, photomorphogenesis, and the expression of light and hormonal signaling genes was studied. The ultrastructure of the chloroplasts in different tissues of the gametophyte M. polymorpha was examined. FRL led to the formation of agranal chloroplasts (in the epidermis and the chlorenchyma) with a high starch content (in the parenchyma), which led to a reduced intensity of photosynthesis. BL increased the transcription of genes for the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites - chalcone synthase (CHS), cellulose synthase (CELL), and L-ascorbate peroxidase (APOX3), which is consistent with the increased activity of low-molecular weight antioxidants. FRL increased the expression of phytochrome apoprotein (PHY) and cytokinin oxidase (CYTox) genes, but the expression of the phytochrome interacting factor (PIF) gene decreased, which was accompanied by a significant change in gametophyte morphology. The use of unregulated pesticides and chemical fertilizers can have detrimental effects on biodiversity and human health. This problem is exacerbated by the growing demand for agricultural products. To address these global challenges and promote food and biological security, a new form of agriculture is needed that aligns with the principles of sustainable development and the circular economy. This entails developing the biotechnology market and maximizing the use of renewable and eco-friendly resources, including organic fertilizers and biofertilizers. Phototrophic microorganisms capable of oxygenic photosynthesis and assimilation of molecular nitrogen play a crucial role in soil microbiota, interacting with diverse microflora. This suggests the potential for creating artificial consortia based on them. Microbial consortia offer advantages over individual organisms as they can perform complex functions and adapt to variable conditions, making them a frontier in synthetic biology. Multifunctional consortia overcome the limitations of monocultures and produce biological products with a wide range of enzymatic activities. Biofertilizers based on such consortia present a viable alternative to chemical fertilizers, addressing the issues associated with their usage. The described capabilities of phototrophic and heterotrophic microbial consortia enable effective and environmentally safe restoration and preservation of soil properties, fertility of disturbed lands, and promotion of plant growth. Hence, the utilization of algo-cyano-bacterial consortia biomass can serve as a sustainable and practical substitute for chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and growth promoters. Furthermore, employing these bio-based organisms is a significant stride towards enhancing agricultural productivity, which is an essential requirement to meet the escalating food demands of the growing global population. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of light quality (white fluorescent light, WFL, containing UV components), red light (RL, 660 nm), blue light (BL, 450 nm), and white LED light (WL, 450 + 580 nm) on the components of the cellular antioxidant system in Pinus sylvestris L. in needles, roots, and hypocotyls, focusing on the accumulation of key secondary metabolites and the expression of related genes. The qualitative and quantitative composition of carotenoids; the content of the main photosynthetic pigments, phenolic compounds, flavonoids (catechins, proanthocyanidins, anthocyanins), ascorbate, and glutathione; the activity of the main antioxidant enzymes; the content of hydrogen peroxide; and the intensity of lipid peroxidation (MDA and 4-HNE contents) were determined. RL resulted in an increase in the content of hydrogen peroxide and 4-HNE, as well as the total fraction of flavonoids in the needles. It also enhanced the expression of several PR (pathogen-related) genes compared to BL and WL. WFL increased the content of phenols, including flavonoids, and enhanced the overall activity of low-molecular antioxidants in needles and hypocotyls. BL increased the content of ascorbate and glutathione, including reduced glutathione, in the needles and simultaneously decreased the activity of peroxidases. Thus, by modifying the light quality, it is possible to regulate the accumulation of secondary metabolites in pine roots and needles, thereby influencing their resistance to various biotic and abiotic stressors.

On behalf of the entire photosynthesis community, it is an honor, for us, to write about two very eminent scientists who were recently recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society of Photosynthesis Research (ISPR) on August 5, 2022; this prestigious Award was given during the closing ceremony of the 18th International Congress on Photosynthesis Research in Dunedin, New Zealand. Modern agricultural cultivation relies heavily on genetically modified plants that survive after exposure to herbicides that kill weeds. Despite this biotechnology, there is a growing need for new sustainable, environmentally friendly, and biodegradable herbicides. We developed a novel [CuL 2 ]Br 2 complex (L = bis{4H-1,3,5-triazino[2,1-b]benzothiazole-2-amine,4-(2-imidazole) that is active on PSII by inhibiting photosynthetic oxygen evolution on the micromolar level. [CuL 2 ]Br 2 reduces the F V of PSII fluorescence. Artificial electron donors do not rescind the effect of [CuL 2 ]Br 2 . The inhibitory mechanism of [CuL 2 ]Br 2 remains unclear. To explore this mechanism, we investigated the effect of [CuL 2 ]Br 2 in the presence/absence of the well-studied inhibitor DCMU on PSII-containing membranes by OJIP Chl fluorescence transient measurements. [CuL 2 ]Br 2 has two effects on Chl fluorescence transients: (1) a substantial decrease of the Chl fluorescence intensity throughout the entire kinetics, and (2) an auxiliary "diuron-like" effect. The initial decrease dominates and is observed both with and without DCMU. In contrast, the "diuron-like" effect is small and is observed only without DCMU. We propose that [CuL 2 ]Br 2 has two binding sites for PSII with different affinities. At the high-affinity site, [CuL 2 ]Br 2 produces effects similar to PSII reaction center inhibition, while at the low-affinity site, [CuL 2 ]Br 2 produces effects identical to those of DCMU. These results are compared with other PSII-specific classes of herbicides.

The effects of heating (40 °C, 1 and 2 h) in dark and light conditions on the photosynthetic activity (photosynthesis rate and photosystem II activity), content of photosynthetic pigments, activity of antioxidant enzymes, content of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs), and expression of a number of key genes of antioxidant enzymes and photosynthetic proteins were studied. It was shown that, in darkness, heating reduced CO 2 gas exchange, photosystem II activity, and the content of photosynthetic pigments to a greater extent in the phyB mutant than in the wild type (WT). The content of TBARs increased only in the phyB mutant, which is apparently associated with a sharp increase in the total peroxidase activity in WT and its decrease in the phyB mutant, which is consistent with a noticeable decrease in photosynthetic activity and the content of photosynthetic pigments in the mutant. No differences were indicated in all heated samples under light. It is assumed that the resistance of the photosynthetic apparatus to a short-term elevated temperature depends on the content of PHYB active form and is probably determined by the effect of phytochrome on the content of low-molecular weight antioxidants and the activity of antioxidant enzymes.

Polyamines (PAs) and nitric oxide (NO) are crucial signalling molecules that exhibit a promising role in improving stress tolerance in plants, maintaining their growth and development. They act as protecting agents for plants through activation of stress adaptation strategies such as membrane stabilisation, acid neutralisation and suppression of ROS generation. NO interacts with PAs during several developmental processes and stress responses. External supplementation of PAs to plants is also reported to cause an increase in NO content. However, it is unclear whether PAs promote synthesis of NO by either as substrates, cofactors, or signals. Impact of NO on synthesis of PAs has been also reported in some studies, yet the exact governing mechanisms of the interrelation between NO and PAs is currently obscure. Understanding the crosstalk between PAs and NO during growth and stress condition in plants can aid in providing better tolerance to plants against stressful environment.

The photoreceptors of red light (phytochromes) and blue light (cryptochromes) impact plant growth and metabolism. However, their action has been barely studied, especially in coniferous plants. Therefore, the influence of blue (maximum 450 nm), red (maximum 660 nm), white light (maxima 450 nm + 575 nm), far-red light (maximum 730 nm), white fluorescent light and dark on seed germination, growth, chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, as well as the transcript levels of genes involved in reception, photosynthesis, light and hormonal signaling of Scots pine plantlets, was investigated. The highest values of dry weight, root length and photosynthetic pigment contents were characteristic of 9-day-old plantlets grown under red light, whereas in the dark plantlet length, seed vigor, seed germination, dry weight and pigment contents were decreased. Under blue and white lights, the main studied morphological parameters were decreased or close to red light. The cotyledons were undeveloped under dark conditions, likely due to the reduced content of photosynthetic pigments, which agrees with the low transcript levels of genes encoding protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase ( PORA ) and phytoene synthase ( PSY ). The transcript levels of a number of genes involved in phytohormone biosynthesis and signaling, such as GA3ox , RRa , KAO and JazA , were enhanced under red light, unlike under dark conditions. We suggest that the observed phenomena of red light are the most important for the germination of the plantlets and may be based on earlier and enhanced expression of auxin, cytokinin, gibberellin and jasmonate signaling genes activated by corresponding photoreceptors. The obtained results may help to improve reforestation technology; however, this problem needs further study.

Nanoparticles have emerged as cutting-edge technology for the improvement of crops yield and safe cultivation of agricultural plants, especially in peripheral areas impaired with toxic heavy metals including chromium (Cr). The uncontrolled release of Cr mainly from anthropogenic factors is substantially polluting the surrounding environment, thereby extensively accumulated in soil-plant system. The excessive Cr-accretion in plant tissues disturbed the morph-physiological, biochemical, cellular, metabolic and molecular processes, and impaired the plants functionality. Therefore, it is obligatory to restrict the accumulation and toxic effects of Cr in plant organs. Recent studies on metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) such as iron oxide, silicon dioxide, copper oxide and zinc oxide have approved their efficacy as potent pool to curb the Cr-induced phytotoxicities and improved the plant tolerance. MNPs attenuated the bioaccumulation and phytotoxicity of Cr by utilizing key mechanisms such as improved photosynthetic machinery, regulation of cellular metabolites, greater chelation capacity to bind with Cr, release of corresponding metallic ions, upsurge in the uptake of essential nutrients, activation of antioxidants (enzymatic and non-enzymatic), reduction in oxidative stress, and cellular injuries, thus improvement in plant growth performances. We have briefly discussed the current knowledge and research gaps in existing literature along with possible recommendations for future research. Overall, Cr-detoxification by MNPs may depends upon the target plant species, Cr speciation, plant growth stages (seedling, vegetative and ripening etc.), treatment methods (foliar spray, seed priming and nutrient solution etc.), type, size, dose and coating of applied MNPs, and conditions (hydroponic and soil environment etc.). This review would help plant scientists to develop MNPs based strategies such as nano-fertilizers to alleviate the Cr-accumulation and its toxic impacts. This may leads to safe and healthy food production. The effects of the quality of light on the content of phytochrome interacting factors (PIFs) such as PIF3, PIF4 and PIF5, as well as the expression of various light-dependent microRNAs, in adult Arabidopsis thaliana pif mutant plants ( pif4 , pif5 , pif3pif5 , pif4pif5 , pif3pif4pif5 ) were studied. We demonstrate that under blue light, the pif4 mutant had maximal expression of most of the studied microRNAs (miR163, miR319, miR398, miR408, miR833) when the PIF4 protein in plants was reduced. This finding indicates that the PIF4 protein is involved in the downregulation of this group of microRNAs. This assumption is additionally confirmed by the fact that under the RL spectrum in pif5 mutants, practically the same miRNAs decrease expression against the background of an increase in the amount of PIF4 protein. Unlike the WT and other mutants, the pif4 mutant responded to the BL spectrum not only by activating the expression of light-dependent miRNAs, but also by a significant increase in the expression of transcription factors and key light signalling genes. These molecular reactions do not affect the activity of photosynthesis but may be involved in the formation of a light quality-dependent phenotype.

We present here a tribute to one of the foremost biophysicists of our time, Vladimir Anatolievich Shuvalov, who made important contributions in bioenergetics, especially on the primary steps of conversion of light energy into charge-separated states in both anoxygenic and oxygenic photosynthesis. For this, he and his research team exploited pico- and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, photodichroism & circular dichroism spectroscopy, light-induced FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared) spectroscopy, and hole-burning spectroscopy. We remember him for his outstanding leadership and for being a wonderful mentor to many scientists in this area. Sustainable environmental management is one of the important aspects of sustainable development goals. Increasing amounts of wastewaters (WW) from exponential economic growth is a major challenge, and conventional treatment methods entail a huge carbon footprint in terms of energy use and GHG emissions. Microalgae-based WW treatment is a potential candidate for sustainable WW treatment. The nutrients which are otherwise unutilized in the conventional processes are recovered in the beneficial microalgal biomass. This review presents comprehensive information regarding the potential of microalgae as sustainable bioremediation agents. Microalgae-bacterial consortia play a critical role in synergistic nutrient removal, supported by the complex nutritional and metabolite exchange between microalgae and the associated bacteria. Design of effective microalgae-bacteria consortia either by screening or by recent technologies such as synthetic biology approaches are highly required for efficient WW treatment. Furthermore, this review discusses the crucial research gap in microalgal WW treatment - the application of a multi-omics platform for understanding microalgal response towards WW conditions and the design of effective microalgal or microalgae-bacteria consortia based on genetic information. While metagenomics helps in the identification and monitoring of the microbial community throughout the treatment process, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics aid in studying the algal cellular response towards the nutrients and pollutants in WW. It has been established that the integration of microalgal processes into conventional WW treatment systems is feasible. In this direction, future research directions for microalgal WW treatment emphasize the need for identifying the niche in WW treatment, while highlighting the pilot sale plants in existence. The effect of red (RL, 660 nm) and blue (BL, 450 nm) light on phy mutant tomato plants was studied. The rates of photosynthesis (Pn) and transpiration, the efficiency of the primary photochemical processes of photosynthesis, the contents of flavonoids and phenolic compounds, the low-molecular-weight antioxidant capacity (Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC)) of leaf extracts, and the expression of light-dependent genes were evaluated. Under RL, BL, and white fluorescent light (WFL), the Pn values decreased in the order: WT > phyb2 > phyaphyb2 > phyaphyb1phyb2 , except for the Pn in phyb2 on BL. Phyb2 also had a larger number of stomata under BL and, as a result, it reached maximum transpiration. The noticeable accumulation of flavonoids and phenolic compounds was observed only in the phyb2 and phyaphyb2 mutants upon irradiation with BL, which agrees with the increased TEAC in the leaf extracts. We suggest that the increased antioxidant activity under PHYB2 deficiency and the maintenance of high photosynthesis under BL are based on an increase in the expression of the early signaling transcription factors genes BBX , HY5 . The largest decrease in the content of flavonoids and TEAC was manifested with a deficiency in PHYB1, which is probably the key to maintaining the antioxidant status in BL plants.

The wheat lines affected by a decrease in the leaf chlorophyll content typically experience a biomass loss. A known major problem of the chlorophyll-deficient wheat mutants is their limited prevention of Photosystem I (PSI) over-reduction brought about by an insufficient cyclic electron flow, potentially exposing them to a higher sensitivity to light fluctuations. However, the resistance of some mutant lines against fluctuating light suggests the occurrence of regulatory processes compensating for the defect in cyclic electron flow. In this study, a phenotyping approach based on fast chlorophyll a fluorescence induction (OJIP transient), corroborated by P700 redox kinetics, was applied to a collection of chlorophyll-deficient wheat lines, grown under continuous or fluctuating light. Quantitative parameters calculated from the OJIP transient are considered informative about Photosystem II (PSII) functional antenna size and photochemistry, as well as the functioning of the entire photosynthetic electron transport chain. The mutants tended to recover a wild-type-like chlorophyll content, and mature plants could hardly be distinguished based on their effective PSII antenna size. Nevertheless, specific OJIP-derived parameters were strongly correlated with the phenotype severity, in particular the amplitude of the I-P phase and the I-P/J-P amplitude ratio, which are indicative of a more capacitive pool of PSI final electron acceptors (ferredoxin and ferredoxin-NADP + oxidoreductase, FNR). We propose that the enlargement of such pool of electron carriers is a compensatory response operating at the acceptor side of PSI to alleviate potentially harmful over-reduced states of PSI. The effects of the novel [CuL 2 ]Br 2 complex (L = bis{4H-1,3,5-triazino [2,1-b]benzothiazole-2-amine,4-(2-imidazole)}copper(II) bromide complex) on the photosystem II (PSII) activity of PSII membranes isolated from spinach were studied. The absence of photosynthetic oxygen evolution by PSII membranes without artificial electron acceptors, but in the presence of [CuL 2 ]Br 2 , has shown that it is not able to act as a PSII electron acceptor. In the presence of artificial electron acceptors, [CuL 2 ]Br 2 inhibits photosynthetic oxygen evolution. [CuL 2 ]Br 2 also suppresses the photoinduced changes of the PSII chlorophyll fluorescence yield (F V ) related to the photoreduction of the primary quinone electron acceptor, Q A . The inhibition of both characteristic PSII reactions depends on [CuL 2 ]Br 2 concentration. At all studied concentrations of [CuL 2 ]Br 2 , the decrease in the F M level occurs exclusively due to a decrease in Fv. [CuL 2 ]Br 2 causes neither changes in the F 0 level nor the retardation of the photoinduced rise in F M , which characterizes the efficiency of the electron supply from the donor-side components to Q A through the PSII reaction center (RC). Artificial electron donors (sodium ascorbate, DPC, Mn 2+ ) do not cancel the inhibitory effect of [CuL 2 ]Br 2 . The dependences of the inhibitory efficiency of the studied reactions of PSII on [CuL 2 ]Br 2 complex concentration practically coincide. The inhibition constant Ki is about 16 µM, and logKi is 4.8. As [CuL 2 ]Br 2 does not change the aromatic amino acids' intrinsic fluorescence of the PSII protein components, it can be proposed that [CuL 2 ]Br 2 has no significant effect on the native state of PSII proteins. The results obtained in the present study are compared to the literature data concerning the inhibitory effects of PSII Cu(II) aqua ions and Cu(II)-organic complexes.

In the context of energy storage, the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER, 2H 2 O → O 2 + 4H + + 4e - ) through the water-oxidation reaction is a thermodynamically uphill reaction in overall water splitting. In recent years, copper(II) coordination compounds have been extensively used for the OER. However, challenges remain in finding the mechanism of the OER in the presence of these metal coordination compounds. Herein, the electrochemical OER activity is investigated in the presence of a copper(II) coordination compound at pH ≈ 7. While the investigations on finding true catalysts for the OER are focused on the working electrode, herein, for the first time, the focus is on the decomposition of copper(II) coordination compound (CuL 3 , L: 2,2'-bipyridine N , N '-dioxide) during the OER on the counter electrode toward the precipitation of copper(I) oxide and metallic Cu.

High temperature can induce a substantial adverse effect on plant photosynthesis. This study addressed the impact of moderately high temperature (35 °C) on photosynthetic efficiency and thylakoid membrane organization in Pisum sativum. The Chl a fluorescence curves showed a significant change, indicating a reduction in photosynthetic efficiency when pea plants were exposed to moderate high-temperature stress. The pulse-amplitude modulation measurements showed decreased non-photochemical quenching while the non-regulated energy dissipation increased in treated compared to control and recovery plants. Both parameters indicated that the photosystem (PS)II was prone to temperature stress. The PSI donor side limitation increased in treated and recovery plants compared to control, suggesting the donor side of PSI is hampered in moderate-high temperature. Further, the PSI acceptor side increased in recovery plants compared to control, suggesting that the cyclic electron transport is repressed after temperature treatment but revert back to normal in recovery conditions. Also, the content of photoprotective carotenoid pigments like lutein and xanthophylls increased in temperature-treated leaves. These results indicate the alteration of macro-organization of thylakoid membranes under moderately elevated temperature, whereas supercomplexes restored to the control levels under recovery conditions. Further, the light harvesting complex (LHC)II trimers, and monomers were significantly decreased in temperature-treated plants. Furthermore, the amount of PSII reaction center proteins D1, D2, PsbO, and Cyt b6 was reduced under moderate temperature, whereas the content of LHC proteins of PSI was stable. Engineered nanoparticles (NPs) are considered potential agents for agriculture as fertilizers and growth enhancers. However, their action spectrum differs strongly, depending on the type of NP, its concentrations, and plant species per se, ranging from growth stimulation to toxicity. This work aimed to investigate effects of iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) NPs on growth, photosynthesis, respiration, antioxidant activity, and leaf mineral content of wheat plants. Wheat seeds were treated with NP for 3 h and plants were grown in the soil at two light intensities, 120 and 300 μmol (photons) m -2 ·s -1 , followed by physiological assessment at several time points. High NP treatment (200 and 500 mg·L -1 ) enhanced plant growth, photosynthesis and respiration, as well as increasing the content of photosynthetic pigments in leaves. This effect depended on both the light intensity during plant growth and the age of the plants. Regardless of concentration and light intensity, an effect of NPs on the primary photochemical processes was not observed. Seed treatment with NP also led to increased activity of ascorbate peroxidase and reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) content in roots and leaves. Treatment with Fe 3 O 4 also led to noticeable increases in the leaf Fe, P, and K content. It is concluded that iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 )-based NP could enhance plant growth by improving photosynthetic performance and the availability of Fe and P.

The potential of cyanobacteria to perform a variety of distinct roles vital for the biosphere, including nutrient cycling and environmental detoxification, drives interest in studying their biodiversity. Increasing soil erosion and the overuse of chemical fertilizers are global problems in developed countries. The option might be to switch to organic farming, which entails largely the use of biofertilisers. Cyanobacteria are prokaryotic, photosynthetic organisms with considerable potential, within agrobiotechnology, to produce biofertilisers. They contribute significantly to plant drought resistance and nitrogen enrichment in the soil. This study sought, isolated, and investigated nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterial strains in rice fields, and evaluated the effect of Mo and Fe on photosynthetic and nitrogenase activities under nitrogen starvation. Cyanobacterial isolates, isolated from rice paddies in Kazakhstan, were identified as Trichormus variabilis K-31 (MZ079356), Cylindrospermum badium J-8 (MZ079357), Nostoc sp. J-14 (MZ079360), Oscillatoria brevis SH-12 (MZ090011), and Tolypothrix tenuis J-1 (MZ079361). The study of the influence of various concentrations of Mo and Fe on photosynthetic and nitrogenase activities under conditions of nitrogen starvation revealed the optimal concentrations of metals that have a stimulating effect on the studied parameters.

Nowadays, there is an interest in biomedical and nanobiotechnological studies, such as studies on carotenoids as antioxidants and studies on molecular markers for cardiovascular, endocrine, and oncological diseases. Moreover, interest in industrial production of microalgal biomass for biofuels and bioproducts has stimulated studies on microalgal physiology and mechanisms of synthesis and accumulation of valuable biomolecules in algal cells. Biomolecules such as neutral lipids and carotenoids are being actively explored by the biotechnology community. Raman spectroscopy (RS) has become an important tool for researchers to understand biological processes at the cellular level in medicine and biotechnology. This review provides a brief analysis of existing studies on the application of RS for investigation of biological, medical, analytical, photosynthetic, and algal research, particularly to understand how the technique can be used for lipids, carotenoids, and cellular research. First, the review article shows the main applications of the modified Raman spectroscopy in medicine and biotechnology. Research works in the field of medicine and biotechnology are analysed in terms of showing the common connections of some studies as caretenoids and lipids. Second, this article summarises some of the recent advances in Raman microspectroscopy applications in areas related to microalgal detection. Strategies based on Raman spectroscopy provide potential for biochemical-composition analysis and imaging of living microalgal cells, in situ and in vivo. Finally, current approaches used in the papers presented show the advantages, perspectives, and other essential specifics of the method applied to plants and other species/objects.

Selenium (Se) is a beneficial element, but only when present within its permissible range. Its hyper-accumulation in edible plant parts can cause Se toxicity. This study aimed to develop an agronomic plan for biofortification of rice with Se and reclamation of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil, utilizing sodium selenite (Na 2 SeO 3 ) and cadmium chloride (CdCl 2 ) as soil treatments. Biofortification was performed on two target rice varieties: genotypes 5097A/R2035 and GangYou725, in field trials by applying Cd at a concentration of 0-8 mg kg soil -1 and Se at 0-1 mg kg soil -1 . Since these rice varieties have different metabolic specificity, the degree of elemental accumulation, deviations in chlorophyll concentration, activity of photosynthetic apparatus and grain yield were assessed. It was found that application of 1 mg kg -1 Se 2 O 3 decrease Cd content and increased chlorophyll content and photosynthetic activity while grain yield was unaffected by application of the metallic trace-elements. Comparing effects at different stages, we found that the 50% heading stage was most sensitive to metal application. In sum, Se mitigates Cd toxicity, but hyperaccumulation of Se (4 mg kg -1 ) in polished rice was observed with Cd at 4 and 8 mg kg -1 . Arsenic (As) is a ubiquitous metalloid that is highly toxic to all living organisms. When grown in As-contaminated soils, plants may accumulate significant amounts of As in the grains or edible shoot parts which then enter a food chain. Plant growth and development per se are also both affected by arsenic. These effects are traditionally attributed to As-induced accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and a consequent lipid peroxidation and damage to cellular membranes. However, this view is oversimplified, as As exposure have a major impact on many metabolic processes in plants, including availability of essential nutrients, photosynthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism, protein metabolism, and sulfur metabolism. This review is aimed to fill this gap in the knowledge. In addition, the molecular basis of arsenic uptake and transport in plants and prospects of creating low As-accumulating crop species, for both agricultural productivity and food safety, are discussed., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd.
