Abstract

The Mauléon Basin, in the northwestern Pyrenean Belt, is related to Early Cretaceous rifting and mantle denudation. Here we review the evolution of depositional systems in the Mauléon Rift Basin during Albian and Cenomanian time. This review includes the lithostratigraphy, regional distribution, boundaries, age and facies sedimentology of the basin’s syn-rift formations and their members. We construct paleogeographic maps to elucidate (1) the 3D distribution of sedimentary facies and depositional systems during the Albian and Cenomanian from the Iberian proximal margin to the hyperextended domain and (2) the link between major extensional structures and sedimentation during rifting and mantle denudation. The Mauléon Rift was supplied during most of the Albian by sediments from the Iberian proximal margin. The southern margin had a steep and abrupt topographic boundary related to a northward crustal rollover along the south-dipping Saint-Palais detachment. This feature controlled the deposition of coarse-grained turbidites at the base of the margin that abruptly gave way to low-density turbidites, then deep-basin deposits in the hyperextended domain. During uppermost Albian to Early Cenomanian time, mantle denudation occurred in the eastern Mauléon Basin and the vergence of the detachment systems reversed. Minor debris-flow deposits formed at the foot of fault scarps associated with the newly formed north-dipping detachments. Elsewhere, sediment from deltaic systems to the west in the Saint-Jean-de-Luz area deposited low-density turbidites in the hyperextended domain. During the post-rift stage, the flux of coarse sediment from the detachment footwall gradually declined as deformation waned, and low-density turbidites expanded onto the hyperextended domain from the European Upper Cretaceous carbonate platform. These paleogeographic reconstructions, in addition to offering a synthetic view of the evolution of sedimentary environments during rifting, offer new insight into the post-rifting exhumation of the lower crust and mantle.

Abstract

The Pyrenean domain records the development of a hyperextended system during the Early Cretaceous at Iberia/Eurasia plate-boundary. This rifting stage is controlled by the coeval development of N120° longitudinal and N20° transverse tectonic features. In the west-Pyrenean Mauléon basin, preserved in the heart of a N120° lithospheric pop-up, the Iholdy, Saison and Barlanès transverse structures are known to play a significant role during the Cretaceous hyperextension. Using a multidisciplinary approach combining Raman thermometry, paleostress reconstructions, seismic interpretations, 3D implicit geological modeling and passive seismic interpretation, we define these three N20° structures as syn-collisional transfer zones rooting at depth in the upper lithospheric mantle. These tectonic features significantly control the 3D structural architecture of the Mauléon basin pop-up. Indeed, the N120°-oriented thrust systems, defining the edges of the Mauléon basin pop-up, branch into these transfer zones and define corridors with differing amounts of shortening. This overall structural pattern defines drawer-like structures allowing the closure, by stages, of the former rift domain. Thus, this study clarifies the role of inherited lithospheric transfer zones in the reactivation of a hyperextended rift basin and bears upon the origin of the non-cylindrical shape of the West-Pyrenean belt

Abstract

National audience; La période du Paléogène correspond à une période de déformations importantes de la plaqueOuest-Europe liées à la dynamique mantellique de l’Atlantique-Nord et aux orogenes pyrénéenet alpin. Les déformations impliquent l’émersion et l’érosion du domaine intracratonique,occasionnant une réorganisation du système source-to-sink (S2S).Afin de caractériser les déformations intraplaques (far field) à l’échelle ouest-européenne, etleur impact sur les systèmes source to sink, des cartes paléo-géologiques ont été construites àdeux périodes clefs de l’évolution de l’orogenèse pyrénéenne. Elles présentent l’originalité decoupler des données structurales, géomorphologiques, thermochronologiques etpaléogéographiques.Les deux périodes clefs considérées sont : l’Yprésien (52Ma) correspondant, dans le domainepyrénéen à la phase majeure d’inversion des structures extensives héritées ; et le Bartonien (40Ma) marquant le paroxysme de la collision continentale :La carte de l’Yprésien (52 Ma) montre : dans le domaine orogénique, l’inversion du rift et lacréation des premiers reliefs, ainsi que la mise en place du bassin flexural (retroforeland). Cedernier est alimenté par le domaine orogénique et par le Massif Central, et constitue la zone desink principal. Dans le domaine intracratonique, la déformation associée à l’orogenèse restemineure. La configuration héritée de la phase de déformation sélandienne, est constituée dereliefs tels que ceux du Massif Central, du Massif armoricain et des Ardennes, marqués par dessurfaces d’aplanissement. Ces domaines en érosions entourent et alimentent le bassin de Paris,ouvert sur la mer du Nord correspondant au sink final.La carte du Bartonien (40 Ma), est marquée par des évidences de la collision continentaleenregistrée dans tout le domaine intracratonique par la réactivation de failles crustales héritées.Ces déformations impliquent une segmentation de certains domaines paléogéographiques qui aun impact direct sur le système source to sink en limitant et réduisant les exports. Parmi cesexemples, citons la mise en place des bassins transtensifs du Massif Central ou encore la mise enplace du domaine de l’Artois séparant le bassin anglo- parisien de la Mer du Nord ; le sink finalde la zone devient alors les Approches de l’Ouest.

Abstract

International audience; Alpine Corsica is located in the northeastern part of the Corsica Island (France). It consists of a series of metamorphosed units including (1) the meta-ophiolite unit which mainly consists in metabasalt, metagabbro and serpentinite and (2) the “Schistes Lustrés” complex formed of metasediments such as calcschists or marbles.The Alpine Corsica groundwater body is a key water source for drinking supply that represents nearly 25% of the groundwater withdrawal in Corsica. However, the geological and hydrogeological properties of these formations are poorly known and differ from those of granite. A conceptual hydrogeological model of these hard-rock aquifers based on the results of a multidisciplinary approach performed at several spatial scales, from the lithological contact (meters) to the catchment (kilometers), was developed in order to improve the knowledge of these complex aquifers.Lithology and tectonic determine the groundwater circulations inside the Alpine Corsica massif. A statistical analysis based on air-lift flow measurements performed during the drilling of sixty boreholes has been conducted. It provides a qualitative characterization of the vertical distribution of permeable zones which are, statistically, mainly located within the first 40 m from the ground surface but may reaches up to 70 – 80 m deep in schists and marbles. Distribution and location of springs, and the measurements of differential stream-flow during base-flow periods allowed identifying aquifers and estimating their hydrodynamic properties. Hydraulic conductivity of the meta-ophiolite unit is found homogeneous and estimated between 1.10-8 and 2.10-8 m/s (minimum estimates of K). For this unit the hydrogeological model of these formations is similar to the “classical” granite model. On the contrary, the hydraulic conductivities of schists and marbles show a wide variability -from 1,4.10-9 to 4,2.10-8 m/s, which reflects the heterogeneous and compartmentalized characters of these aquifer systems because of local dissolution of marbles.

Abstract

International audience; From Early Miocene to the present-day the core parts of the western European Alps experienced brittle extensional deformations, mostly in a strike-parallel direction. Here we present new data constraining the brittle deformation of the Vanoise area (French Alps) and a synthesis of 312 paleostress tensors in the whole arc of the internal Western Alps. The data show a continuous change in the direction of extension, from N065° (Simplon area), to N-S (Vanoise area) and to NNW-SSE (Briançon area). The aboundance of orogen-perpendicular σ3 axes increases from the North to the South. In the Briançonnais area, an extensional reactivation of the Basal Penninic Thrust seems to be the origin of the E-W to NE-SW oriented σ3. In light of these new data and the regional paleostress synthesis, we propose a predominant orogen-parallel extension in the internal zone as a whole. This orogenparallel extension is related to the indentation/rotation of the Apulian microplate and to the opening of the Ligurian Sea during the Lower-Middle Miocene. The locally observed orogen-perpendicular extension is interpreted as an effect of the exhumation of the Internal Crystalline Massifs, the uplift of the External Crystalline Massifs and/or the present-day geodynamics (post-orogenic gravitational collapse). Some transcurrent tectonics, older than the extension in the Valais area, and younger than the extension further South is observed in the entire inner Western Alps; strike-slip movements are correlated with the Apulian rotation and local permutation of stress axes.

30. Quantification of strain rate in the Western Alps using geodesy: comparisons with seismotectonics

Abstract

The contrasted seismotectonic regime of the Western Alps is characterized by radial extension in the high chain, combined with local compressive areas at the foothill of the belt, and everywhere occurrence of transcurrent tectonics. Here, we compare this seismotectonic regime to a large-scale compilation of GPS measurements in the Western Alpine realm. Our analysis is based on the raw GPS database, which give the measured velocity field with respect to the so called “stable Europe”, and an interpolated velocity field, in order to smooth the database on a more regular mesh. Both strain rate and rotational components of the deformation are investigated. The strain rate field shows patch-like structure, with extensional areas located in the core and to the North of the belt and compressional areas located in its periphery. Although the GPS deformation fields (both raw and interpolated) are more spatially variable than the seismotectonic field, a good qualitative correlation is established with the seismotectonic regionalization of the deformation. The rotation rate fields (both raw and interpolated) present counterclockwise rotations in the innermost part of the belt and a surprising continuous zone of clockwise rotations following the arc-shape geometry of the Western Alps along their external border. We interpret this new result in term of a counterclockwise rotation of the Apulia plate with respect to the stable Europe. This tectonic scheme may induce clockwise rotations of crustal block along the large strike-slip fault system, which runs in the outer part of the belt, from the Rhône-Simplon fault to the Belledonne fault and Southeastward, to the High-Durance and Argentera fault.

33. Extensional neotectonics around the bend of the Western/Central Alps: an overview

Abstract

The Western Alps' active tectonics is characterized by ongoing widespread extension in the highest parts of the belt and transpressive/compressive tectonics along its borders. We examine these contrasting tectonic regimes using a multidisciplinary approach including seismotectonics, numerical modeling, GPS, morphotectonics, fieldwork, and brittle deformation analysis. Extension appears to be the dominant process in the present-day tectonic activity in the Western Alps, affecting its internal areas all along the arc. Shortening, in contrast, is limited to small areas located along at the outer borders of the chain. Strike-slip is observed throughout the Alpine realm and in the foreland. The stress-orientation pattern is radial for σ3 in the inner, extensional zones, and for σ1 in the outer, transcurrent/tranpressional ones. Extensional areas can be correlated with the parts of the belt with the thickest crust. Quantification of seismic strain in tectonically homogeneous areas shows that only 10-20% of the geodesy-documented deformation can be explained by the Alpine seismicity. We propose that, Alpine active tectonics are ruled by isostasy/buoyancy forces rather than the ongoing shortening along the Alpine Europe/Adria collision zone. This interpretation is corroborated by numerical modeling. The Neogene extensional structures in the Alps formed under increasingly brittle conditions. A synthesis of paleostress tensors for the internal parts of the West-Alpine Arc documents major orogen-parallel extension with a continuous change in σ3 directions from ENE-WSW in the Simplon area, to N-S in the Vanoise area and to NNW-SSE in the Briançon area. Minor orogen-perpendicular extension increases from N to S. This second signal correlates with the present-day geodynamics as revealed by focal-plane mechanisms analysis.
