Abstract: Research assessing personality traits and religiosity across cultures has typically neglected variation across religious affiliations and has been limited to a small number of personality traits. This study examines the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and their facets, two theoretically distinct measures of religiosity, and twelve other personality traits across seven religious affiliations and 61 countries/regions. The proportion of participants following a religion varied substantially across countries (e.g., Indonesia = 99%; Estonia = 7%). Both measures of religiosity were related to agreeableness, conscientiousness, happiness, and fairness; however; relations with religiosity as a social axiom were stronger and less variable across religious affiliations. Additionally, personality-religiosity links were more robust in low-development, high-conflict, and collectivist nations.

2. Does realizing strengths, insight, and behavioral practice through a psychological intervention promote personality change?: An intensive longitudinal study

Abstract: The mechanisms of change underlying the effectiveness of personality change interventions are largely unclear. In this study, we used data from a three-month digital intervention with an intensive longitudinal design to test whether a greater realization of general change factors is partly responsible for personality change. Participants (N = 679, 53.0% female; age: M = 25.3 years, SD = 7.1) seeking to increase either Emotional Stability, Conscientiousness, or Extraversion provided self-ratings on their weekly personality states and the three generic change factors of strengths, insights, and behavioral practice. We found a single-factor structure of change factors within and between individuals. Results showed within-person increases in Emotional Stability, Extraversion, and Conscientiousness states as well as increases in change factors across the intervention. Changes in personality states were coupled with changes in generic change factors. Finally, the results provide initial support for the hypothesis that the realization of general change factors is partly responsible for the effects of the intervention. Within-person increases in the change factors were associated with subsequent increases in Extraversion and Emotional Stability states during the following week. The present findings highlight the need to better understand how and why people change in personality as a result of interventions.Recent studies have shown that it is possible to change personality traits through psychological interventions. However, the mechanisms of change are largely unclear. The present study therefore examined whether targeting supportive (strengths), learning (insight) and action (behavioral practice) factors through intervention contributes to personality change. Our results provide initial evidence that these general change mechanisms are partly responsible for personality changes.

Abstract: People in economically advantaged nations tend to evaluate their life as more positive overall and report greater well-being than people in less advantaged nations. But how does positivity manifest in the daily life experiences of individuals around the world? The present study asked 15,244 college students from 62 nations, in 42 languages, to describe a situation they experienced the previous day using the Riverside Situational Q-sort (RSQ). Using expert ratings, the overall positivity of each situation was calculated for both nations and individuals. The positivity of the average situation in each nation was strongly related to the economic development of the nation as measured by the Human Development Index (HDI). For individuals’ daily experiences, the economic status of their nation also predicted the positivity of their experience, even more than their family socioeconomic status. Further analyses revealed the specific characteristics of the average situations for higher HDI nations that make their experiences more positive. Higher HDI was associated with situational experiences involving humor, socializing with others, and the potential to express emotions and fantasies. Lower HDI was associated with an increase in the presence of threats, blame, and hostility, as well as situational experiences consisting of family, religion, and money. Despite the increase in a few negative situational characteristics in lower HDI countries, the overall average experience still ranged from neutral to slightly positive, rather than negative, suggesting that greater HDI may not necessarily increase positive experiences but rather decrease negative experiences. The results illustrate how national economic status influences the lives of individuals even within a single instance of daily life, with large and powerful consequences when accumulated across individuals within each nation.

Abstract: Recent research conducted largely in the United States suggests that most people would like to change one or more of their personality traits. Yet almost no research has investigated the degree to which and in what ways volitional personality change (VPC), or individuals’ active efforts toward personality change, might be common around the world. Through a custom-built website, 13,278 college student participants from 55 countries and one of a larger country (Hong Kong, S.A.R.) using 42 different languages reported whether they were currently trying to change their personality and, if so, what they were trying to change. Around the world, 60.40% of participants reported that they are currently trying to change their personalities, with the highest percentage in Thailand (81.91%) and the lowest in Kenya (21.41%). Among those who provide open-ended responses to the aspect of personality they are trying to change, the most common goals were to increase emotional stability (29.73%), conscientiousness (19.71%), extraversion (15.94%), and agreeableness (13.53%). In line with previous research, students who are trying to change any personality trait tend to have relatively low levels of emotional stability and happiness. Moreover, those with relatively low levels of socially desirable traits reported attempting to increase what they lacked. These principal findings were generalizable around the world

Abstract: What does it mean to be happy? The vast majority of cross-cultural studies on happiness have employed a Western-origin, or "WEIRD" measure of happiness that conceptualizes it as a self-centered (or "independent"), high-arousal emotion. However, research from Eastern cultures, particularly Japan, conceptualizes happiness as including an interpersonal aspect emphasizing harmony and connectedness to others. Following a combined emicetic approach (Cheung, van de Vijver & Leong, 2011), we assessed the cross-cultural applicability of a measure of independent happiness developed in the US (Subjective Happiness Scale; Lyubomirsky & Lepper, 1999) and a measure of interdependent happiness developed in Japan (Interdependent Happiness Scale; Hitokoto & Uchida, 2015), with data from 63 countries representing 7 sociocultural regions. Results indicate that the schema of independent happiness was more coherent in more WEIRD countries. In contrast, the coherence of interdependent happiness was unrelated to a country's "WEIRD-ness." Reliabilities of both happiness measures were lowest in African and Middle Eastern countries, suggesting these two conceptualizations of happiness may not be globally comprehensive. Overall, while the two measures had many similar correlates and properties, the self-focused concept of independent happiness is "WEIRD-er" than interdependent happiness, suggesting cross-cultural researchers should attend to both conceptualizations.

Abstract: Objective: The current study seeks to replicate and extend principal findings reported in The World at 7:00, a project that examined the psychological experience of situations in 20 countries. Method: Data were collected from participants in 62 countries (N = 15,318), recruited from universities by local collaborators to complete the study via a custom-built website using 42 languages. Results: Several findings of the previous study were replicated. The average reported situational experience around the world was mildly positive. The same countries tended to be most alike in reported situational experience (r =.60) across the two studies, among the countries included in both. As in the previous study, the homogeneity of reported situational experience was significantly greater within than between countries, although the difference was small. The previously reported exploratory finding that negative aspects of situations varied more across countries than positive aspects did not replicate. Correlations between aspects of reported situational experience and country-level average value scores, personality, and demographic variables were largely similar between the two studies. Conclusion: The findings underscore the importance of cross-cultural situational research and the need to replicate its results, and highlight the complex interplay of culture and situational experience.

Abstract: What does it mean to be happy? The vast majority of cross-cultural studies on happiness have employed a Western-origin, or “WEIRD” measure of happiness that conceptualizes it as a self-centered (or “independent”), high-arousal emotion. However, research from Eastern cultures, particularly Japan, conceptualizes happiness as including an interpersonal aspect emphasizing harmony and connectedness to others. Following a combined emic-etic approach (Cheung, van de Vijver & Leong, 2011), we assessed the cross-cultural applicability of a measure of independent happiness developed in the US (Subjective Happiness Scale; Lyubomirsky & Lepper, 1999) and a measure of interdependent happiness developed in Japan (Interdependent Happiness Scale; Hitokoto & Uchida, 2015), with data from 63 countries representing 7 sociocultural regions. Results indicate that the schema of independent happiness was more coherent in more WEIRD countries. In contrast, the coherence of interdependent happiness was unrelated to a country’s “WEIRD-ness.” Reliabilities of both happiness measures were lowest in African and Middle Eastern countries, suggesting these two conceptualizations of happiness may not be globally comprehensive. Overall, while the two measures had many similar correlates and properties, the self-focused concept of independent happiness is “WEIRD-er” than interdependent happiness, suggesting cross-cultural researchers should attend to both conceptualizations.

10. Correlated personality change across time and age

Abstract: The goal of this study was to examine differential and correlated change in personality across the adult lifespan. Studying differential and correlated change can help understand whether intraindividual trait change trajectories deviate from the norm and how these trajectories are coupled with each other. We used data from two large longitudinal panel studies from the United States that covered a total age range of 20 to 95 years on the first measurement occasion. We used correlated factor models and bivariate latent change score models to examine the rank-order stability and correlations between change across three measurement waves covering 18 years ( N = 3250) and four measurement waves covering 12 years ( N = 4145). We examined the moderation effects of continuous age on these model parameters using local structural equation modeling. The results suggest that the test–retest correlations decrease with increasing time between measurements but are unaffected by participants’ age. We found that change processes in Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness were strongly related, particularly in late adulthood. Correlated change patterns were highly stable across time intervals and similar to the initial cross-sectional Big Five correlations. We discuss potential mechanisms and implications for personality development research.

11. Six-month Stability of Individual Differences in Sports Coaches’ Burnout, Self-compassion and Social Support.

Abstract: Using a three-wave prospective cross-lagged panel design, the study examined six-month stability of burnout, self-compassion and social support among sports coaches in terms of measurement invariance, mean-level change, rank-order stability, and structural stability. The participating coaches (N = 422; Mage = 44.48, SD = 11.03) completed an online questionnaire measuring self-compassion, social support, coach burnout and demographics at baseline and two follow-ups at three months and six months. The various forms of stability were assessed using structural equation modeling. There was no significant mean-level change in burnout, self-compassion, or social support, and all three constructs exhibited measurement invariance. Rank-order stability remained relatively high, ranging from .78 to .94 across the three time points. For all three constructs, covariances between latent factors were invariant over time, indicating high structural stability. While self-compassion and social support were positively related, both were negatively related to coach burnout. These results confirm the importance of preventing and addressing symptoms of burnout, low self-compassion and poor social support in sports settings.

Abstract: Worldwide efforts to promote healthy aging have increased in recent years, given the longer life expectancies. The current volume was organized in order to discuss how personality science may be employed in these efforts. In this introduction, we discuss the previous efforts to link personality constructs to the promotion of healthy aging. In so doing, we set the stage for the remaining chapters that target specific topics along this front. The importance of promoting healthy aging has never been clearer. Individuals are living longer lives than ever before, which places greater importance on identifying factors that promote health maintenance and improve quality of life. Though the final endpoint may be the same for all, individuals differ greatly in the extent to which they enact healthy lifestyle behaviors across the lifespan, and in their likelihood for experiencing negative health risks. In recent decades, efforts to identify why some individuals experience more or less positive aging trajectories have pointed to the value of considering personality science. Though the notion that individuals’ personality dispositions are valuable for predicting health outcomes is not new (for a review of the classic work on trait anger and hostility, see Siegman, 1994), what has changed in recent years is (a) our definitions, taxonomies, and understanding of personality dispositions, (b) the knowledge base regarding why and for whom personality characteristics lead to healthier aging outcomes, and (c) the methodological and analytic approaches taken for studies in this field. The current volume reflects an effort to present new findings, developments, and techniques in order to continue progress for research on personality traits and healthy aging. The focus is less on absolute coverage of any one domain of research or methodological expertise, and instead is intended to provide a smattering of new ideas and theoretical insights from some of the researchers at the forefront of

Abstract: This chapter introduces a conceptual framework that aims to explain how and why engaging in cognitive, physical, and social activities is related to short-term healthy aging outcomes. The Activities in Motion and in Action (AMA) framework consists of five components (engagement, outcomes, mechanisms, moderators and intervention) and five paths through which the components may influence each other. The framework depicts an overview of the mechanisms that underlie cognitive, physical, and social activities’ successful short-term effects and the features that render these activities optimally effective. The centerpiece of the framework are personality-informed interventions, which are suggested to promote the engagement in cognitive, physical and social activities of older adults (i.e., “be in motion and take action”). The AMA framework proposes three intervention factors (action/practice, learning/insight, and self-regulation) as potential heuristic principles leading to positive healthy aging outcomes. In sum, this framework has great potential to inform theory development of healthy aging, as it is essential to a better understanding of predictors, mechanisms, and moderators that potentially shape short-term dynamic processes of healthy aging.

Abstract: Both mobility and personality are key determinants of healthy aging. However, these two constructs have barely been explored in combination, although mobility and personality effects on healthy aging are expected to not be independent from another. This chapter aims at combining both perspectives and setting a foundation to foster future research, jointly investigating personality and mobility effects on healthy aging. Therefore, the chapter suggests to decompose mobility in the two components motility (i.e., the movement potential) and movement (i.e., the actual manifested mobility). This decomposition allows to draw parallels to the commonly used distinction between personality traits and states. While motility and personality traits refer to the temporally stable underlying dispositions of an individual, movement and personality states conceptualize the day-by-day manifestation of the respective construct. Drawing upon the parallels regarding the distinct levels of analysis in both domains, a conceptual model is proposed that links the individual components with healthy aging. The individual links are discussed using relevant empirical research and theories and hypothesizing potential causal pathways between mobility, personality and healthy aging.

Vigicrues Flash is designed to work on ungauged catchments and implements the AIGA method. This method is based on a distributed hydrological model with radar rainfall observation inputs. This model takes into account spatial variabilities of the rainfall and also spatial properties of the catchment. However, the calibration of the distributed parameters at very low scale cannot be handled with common calibration procedures without facing strong equifinality issues. In order to take fully advantage of this distributed model, we suggest to use the 4DVar data assimilation procedure to calibrate parameters. With this method, the search of the optimal set of parameters is achieved by minimising an objective function under background constraints about the system (such as spatial variabilities and uncertainties). This algorithm helps to combine all available sources of information on the system and lets spatialize parameters through the catchments. This work presents the application of this method on the Gardon d'Anduze watershed. We compare distributed and uniform calibrations and we show the potential benefits of this method on ungauged catchments.; Le service opérationnel Crue Soudaine développé par le SCHAPI utilise la méthode AIGA pour l'alerte et l'anticipation des crues sur l'ensemble du territoire français. La méthode AIGA est optimisée pour prévoir les crues sur des bassins-versants de petites tailles et non jaugés. Elle repose sur un modèle de prévision pluie-débit distribués (GRD) qui fonctionne de manière continue avec les données de pluies radars. Ce type de modèle permet de prendre en compte d'une part l'hétérogénéité spatiale des pluies et d'autre part la variabilité spatiale du fonctionnement hydrologique des bassins versants. Cependant le calage spatial des paramètres du modèle reste difficile à réaliser et une paramétrisation uniforme à l'échelle des bassins-versants est utilisée dans la méthode AIGA. En effet le nombre de variables à calibrer est nettement supérieur aux nombres d'observations disponibles : un tel calage est difficilement réalisable par des techniques de calage traditionnelles (équifinalité des jeux de paramètres trouvés). Afin de valoriser pleinement la descente d'échelle opérée par un modèle distribué, nous proposons dans ce travail d'utiliser l'algorithme d'assimilation de donnée 4DVar pour réaliser une paramétrisation spatiale du modèle. La recherche des jeux de paramètres optimums s'effectue alors par la minimisation d'une fonction « objectif » sous la contrainte de connaissances à priori de l'état du système : variabilité spatiale, variance et initialisation des paramètres. La recherche du minimum de cette fonction nécessite le calcul du gradient qui peut être obtenu efficacement par la méthode "adjointe". L'utilisation de cet algorithme permet de combiner de manière optimale l'ensemble des sources d'informations disponibles sur un bassin-versant et permet ainsi de diffuser l'information vers les pixels et bassins-versants voisins en vue d'améliorer la régionalisation des paramètres. Enfin, cet algorithme peut être aussi bien appliqué pour la recherche des paramètres que pour la mise à jour en temps réel des états internes du modèle. Ce travail présente l'application de l'algorithme 4DVar avec le modèle pluie-débit distribué GRD sur le bassin-versant du Gardon d'Anduze. Il permet notamment de comparer un calage spatialement distribué par rapport à un calage spatialement homogène et de montrer l'apport potentiel d'une telle approche sur des bassins versants non jaugés.

Abstract: Since March 2017, the SCHAPI runs an operational flash flood warning system covering small watersheds (but greater than 10-km²) not included into the national Vigicrues system (www.vigicrues.gouv.fr). This new service, called Vigicrues Flash, is based on a discharge-threshold flood warning method called AIGA. This method consists of comparing discharges calculated at ungauged catchments by a hydrological model (GRD) using the operational radar-based quantitative precipitation estimates (PANTHERE from Meteo-France) with a 18-year continuous simulation of discharges produced by the same model. Until now, no quantitative precipitation forecasts are used into the operational system, even if some tests are currently ongoing. Research focuses also on the structure of the GRD model. Several versions have been set up since the first real-time version launched in 2003. The current version of GRD implemented in the Vigicrues Flash is a semi-distributed hourly model. Running on an event-based mode, it needs to be initialized by a continuous daily model. Furthermore, to obtain 15-min updates, four hourly models are used in parallel. To simplify this workflow, and better describe processes such as transfer, the GRD model is being enhanced to develop a continuous and fully distributed version, to be run at subhourly time steps . This paper presents preliminary results obtained for the Gardon d'Anduze catchment, at 5-min temporal and 1-km spatial resolutions. Calibrated using only the downstream gauge station (Anduze, 541 km²), the tested model correctly reproduces discharges observed at 3 upstream locations during the October 2014 event. As these results are very promising, further evaluation is being carried out with other flood events and additional catchments., Dans un souci de simplification des calculs de la chaîne opérationnelle Vigicrues Flash, mais également d'amélioration de la prise en compte des processus (notamment le transfert), les travaux actuels sur le modèle GRD utilisé dans la méthode AIGA s'orientent vers le développement d'un seul modèle continu pouvant fonctionner au pas de temps infra-horaire, et entièrement distribué. Dans cet objectif, cet article présente des résultats préliminaires obtenus sur le bassin versant des Gardons à Anduze, à la résolution temporelle de 5-min et spatiale de 1-km. Les résultats obtenus sont très encourageants mais du travail est encore requis pour arriver à un modèle temps réel pleinement opérationnel.

Abstract: [Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]ARCEAU [TR2_IRSTEA]GEUSI; The main objectives of the project have been addressed by combining a European modelling approach with case study analysis and regional (local) knowledge of water demand and water availability considering climate change as well as socio-economic developments. An integrated assessment for entire Europe was performed under the consideration of different scenarios and cli-mate change projections. This large-scale perspective allows indicating regions which are po¬ten-tially vulnerable to climate change and furthermore to identify regional adaptation measures which could be promoted at the EU level. Additionally three case studies were selected across Europe to in¬vestigate changes in hydrologic regimes, water availability and sectoral water use. These case stu¬dies are focusing on three different water management issues in three different regions. In the first case study, the influence of climate change on the hydromorphological conditions according to the WFD were evaluated for a section of the Eder River (Germany). The objective of this case study was to examine whether the environmental WFD objectives can be achieved in a typical river section considering climate change impacts. The second case study investigated water management, especially drinking water provision, and flood alleviation in the Seine river basin (France), which is partly based on the operation of artificial reservoirs. Scenarios were developed linking the impact of climate change on water resources and changes in water demand and its management. The third case study assesses the quantitative effects of climate change on water balance components and water use in the agricultural sector of the Italian Apulia region, in order to support the adoption of adaptation measures. Actually, in the Apulia region agriculture still remains the primary user of water and the primary economical resource.; Les principaux objectifs du projet ont été adressés en combinant une approche de modélisation européenne avec une analyse de cas d'études et la connaissance régionale (locale) des demandes et disponibilités en eau en considérant le changement climatique ainsi que les développements socio-économiques. Une estimation intégrée pour l'Europe entière a été entreprise en considérant différents scénarios et projections de changement climatique. Cette perspective à large échelle permet d'identifier des régions qui sont potentiellement vulnérables au changement climatique mais aussi d'identifier les mesures d'adaptation qui pourraient être développées au niveau européen. De plus, trois cas d'étude ont été sélectionnés à travers l'Europe pour étudier les changements dans les régimes hydrologiques, la disponibilité en eau, et les usages de l'eau. Ces cas d'étude concernent trois différents problèmes de gestion de l'eau dans trois régions différentes. Dans le premier cas d'étude, l'influence du changement climatique sur les conditions hydromorphologiques selon la DCE ont été évaluées pour une section de la rivière Eder (Allemagne). L'objectif de ce cas d'étude était d'examiner si l'objectif environnemental de la DCE peut être rempli dans une section typique de la rivière en considérant le changement climatique. Le second cas d'étude s'est penché sur la gestion de l'eau, plus spécialement de la fourniture en eau potable, et sur la mitigation des crues sur le bassin de la Seine (France), qui est partiellement basée sur l'exploitation de réservoirs artificiels. Des scénarios ont été développés pour évaluer l'impact du changement climatique sur les ressources en eau en testant différents modes de gestion des réservoirs. Le troisième cas d'étude a évalué les effets quantitatifs du changement climatique sur les composantes du bilan en eau et sur l'utilisation de l'eau sur le secteur agricole de la région des Pouilles en Italie, afin de soutenir l'adoption de mesures d'adaptation. En fait, la région des Pouilles l'agriculture reste le principal utilisateur d'eau et la principale ressource économique.

Abstract: International audience; Adaptation strategies will be needed to cope with the hydrological consequences of projected climate change. In this perspective, the management of many artificial reservoirs will have to be adapted to continue to fulfil downstream objectives (e.g. flow regulation). This study evaluates the sustainability of the management rules of the artificial reservoirs on the Seine River basin, France, under climate change scenarios. The Seine River basin at Paris (43,800 km2) has major socio-economic stakes for France, and the consequences of droughts and floods may be dramatic. In this context, four large multi-purpose reservoirs were built on the basin during the twentieth century for low-flow augmentation and flood alleviation. A hydrological modelling chain was designed to explicitly account for reservoir management rules. It was calibrated in current conditions and then fed by the outputs of seven climate models in present and future conditions, forced by the A1B IPCC scenario, downscaled using a weather-type method and statistically bias-corrected. The results show that the hydrological model performs quite well in current conditions. The simulations made in present and future conditions indicate a decrease in water availability and summer low flows, but no significant trends in high flows. Simulations also indicate that there is room for progress in the current multi-purpose management of reservoirs and that it would be useful to define proper adaptation strategies.

Abstract: International audience; Our purpose is to investigate a possible adaptation strategy for multi-objective reservoirs management on the Seine river basin, upstream of Paris, by using a centralized Tree-Based Model Predictive Control (TB-MPC). This method uses all the information available in real-time, including ensemble weather forecasting, to obtain an adaptive control. In TB-MPC, a tree is generated from an ensemble of weather forecasts. The tree structure summarizes the information contained in the ensemble, specifying the time, along the optimization horizon, when forecast trajectories diverge and thus uncertainty is expected to be resolved. This information is then used in the model predictive control framework, to optimize an objective function over a finite receding horizon, using a model to predict the evolution of the system in response to the forecasted inputs. The TB-MPC controller is implemented in combination with the integrated model of the Seine river basin, including a semi-distributed hydrologic model of the watershed, a simplified hydraulic model of the river network, and the four reservoir models. The controller optimizes a global cost function that takes into account the costs associated to high and low flows, based on critical thresholds at some key downstream stations, and a penalty cost based on the final reservoir storages, to guarantee a sustainable management in the long term. The reservoir's management is tested under the evolution of hydro-climatic conditions due to climate change, using statistically downscaled and bias corrected climate simulations produced by seven Global Circulation Models (GCMs). For the present conditions, time series of ensemble weather forecasts are available and will be used to statistically generate time series of ensemble forecasts for the future. The performances of the TB-MPC controller will be simulated and compared to the actual decentralized management performances over present and future scenarios.

Abstract: International audience; The reservoirs on the Seine River, upstream of Paris, are regulated with the objective of reducing floods and supporting low flows. The current management of these reservoirs is empirical, reactive, and decentralized, mainly based on filling curves, constructed from an analysis of historical floods and low flows. When inflows are significantly different from their seasonal average, this management strategy proves inefficient. Climate change is also a challenge, for the possible modification of future hydrologic conditions. To improve such management strategy, in this study we investigate the use of Tree-Based Model Predictive Control (TB-MPC), a proactive and centralized method that uses all the information available in real-time, including ensemble weather forecasting. In TB-MPC, a tree is generated from an ensemble of weather forecast. The tree structure summarizes the information contained in the ensemble, specifying the time, along the optimization horizon, when forecast trajectories diverge and thus uncertainty is expected to be resolved. This information is then used in the model predictive control framework. The TB-MPC controller is implemented in combination with the integrated model of the water system, including a semi-distributed hydrologic model of the watershed, a simplified hydraulic model of the river network, and the four reservoir models. Optimization takes into account the cost associated to floods and low-flows, and a penalty cost based on the final reservoir storages. The performances of the TB-MPC controller will be simulated and compared with those of deterministic MPC and with the actual management performances. This work is part of the Climaware European project (2010-2013) set up to develop and to assess measures for sustainable water resources management regarding adaptation to climate change.

Abstract: National audience; Les systèmes hydrauliques à surface libre, tels que les canaux d'irrigation, sont équipés d'ouvrages mobiles : seuils, vannes, pompes, afin de distribuer l'eau à divers usagers agricoles, mais aussi souvent urbains et industriels. Ces systèmes sont particulièrement intéressants car leurs dynamiques sont complexes : temps de retards, non-linéarités, grande dimension, multivariables (nombreuses mesures et nombreux points d'action possibles). D'autres systèmes présentent des similitudes et peuvent être étudiés sous le même angle (réseaux d'assainissement, fleuves comportant des barrages ou des usines hydroélectriques, stades d'eau vive, etc.). L'automatique est un domaine proposant de nombreuses méthodologies et des outils pour analyser ces systèmes et pour proposer des algorithmes de régulation automatique. Les critères souvent étudiés pour ces algorithmes sont la stabilité, la performance et la robustesse. Il existe des méthodes basées sur des algorithmes simples (ex. PID) mais dont le calage des coefficients peut être délicat du fait des temps de retard importants et des interactions entre les divers biefs d'un réseau de grande dimension. Nous montrerons une méthode simple à mettre en ½uvre pour caler ce type d'algorithme, adaptée aux dynamiques hydrauliques. Il existe également des méthodes plus sophistiquées particulièrement bien adaptées aux systèmes multi-variables, capables de calculer simultanément les commandes à appliquer pour satisfaire des objectifs sur un ensemble de points répartis sur le système. Ces méthodes sont souvent basées sur la minimisation de la norme d'un opérateur reliant les perturbations agissant sur le système, aux variables à contrôler. Les méthodes les plus classiques sont nommées à partir de la norme considérée : H2 (ou LQR-LQG), H∞, l1. Ces normes sont parfois définies dans l'espace temporel classique, ou dans l'espace fréquentiel apparaissant après transformation de Laplace. Nous illustrerons les principes et les performances obtenues avec certaines de ces méthodes sur des canaux d'irrigation. Les méthodes multi-variables sont parfois dites "à retour de sortie", ce qui signifie que l'algorithme mathématique calculant le vecteur de commande "u" n'a besoin de connaitre que les sorties "y" à contrôler. Mais parfois ces méthodes sont "à retour d'état", ce qui signifie que la totalité de l'état "x" doit être connu et fourni à l'algorithme. Or cet état est en général de grande dimension, par exemple constitué de cotes de l'eau et de débits à diverses sections de calcul de long du système hydraulique considéré. Il est alors impossible de mesurer cet état entièrement. La solution à adopter est basée sur la reconstruction de cet état à partir d'un nombre limité de mesures. Cette reconstruction est souvent basée sur des approches de type "Observateur d'état" ou "Filtre", qui peuvent rentrer dans le cadre général de ce qu'on appelle communément "Assimilation de Données". Le principe de cette Assimilation de Données est d'utiliser au mieux des informations provenant de deux sources différentes : un modèle et des données mesurées. Cette Assimilation de Données permet également de détecter des problèmes de capteurs (panne, dérive, etc.), d'actionneurs, de reconstituer des entrées inconnues, d'identifier des paramètres du modèle, etc. Nous illustrerons les apports de ces méthodes sur des applications pour la commande temps réel des aménagements sur le Rhône (collaboration avec la Compagnie Nationale du Rhône) ou sur l'Adour (collaboration avec le Schapi et le Cerfacs).

Abstract: International audience; Climate projections established by the IPCC indicate that significant changes in precipitation and temperature are to be expected in Europe in the next decades. The ClimAware project (2010-2013, funded by IWRM-Net) was set up to develop adaptation strategies to limit the impacts of climate change in several water related domains, each being investigated through a case study: hydrogeomorphology in Germany, irrigation in Italy and reservoir management in France. An integrated European-wide modelling approach was also developed for cross-scale analysis. The Seine River case study focuses on the adaptation of reservoir management for two main objectives: low-flow augmentation and flood alleviation, with important socio-economic stakes especially in the great Paris area. Four large reservoirs control the upstream parts of the four main rivers (Aube, Seine, Yonne and Marne) and are managed by the Seine Grands Lacs public basin authority. A daily hydrological modelling chain was designed to explicitly account for reservoir management rules. It was calibrated in current conditions (1958 to 2009) and then fed by the outputs of seven climate models in present (1961 to 1991) and future (2046 to 2065) conditions, forced by the SRES A1B scenario, downscaled using a weather-type method and statistically bias-corrected. The impact of climate change was assessed using performance indicators for different scenarios of reservoirs management. The adaptation of two levels of management design was investigated in the project: - tactical management based on the annual objective filling curve of the reservoirs and designed from an analysis of historical hydrological regimes and extreme events; - real time management, accounting for real time constraints linked to ongoing conditions, which is currently reactive and decentralized and only depends on local available data (level in the reservoir and flows in the upstream and downstream reaches). The proposed adaptation scenario for tactical management is based on a statistical method, giving the filling curves associated to risk probability of failure in achieving one objective in the future. We developed new filling curves for the available climate simulations by minimizing the risk, following a priority order among objectives. For real time management, a Tree-Based Model Predictive Control (TB-MPC) was used. It is a proactive and a centralized method, using information available in real-time, including ensemble weather forecasts. TB-MPC uses an internal model and an objective function to find the optimal release from the reservoirs. The internal model predicts the future effect of present releases, and the objective function penalizes high and low flows at different locations downstream, including at Paris. Adaptation strategies for the two management levels were tested in present and future climate conditions and management performances were compared to current management practice.; Les projections climatiques établies par le GIEC prévoient des changements significatifs des précipitations et des températures en Europe pour les prochaines décennies. Le projet ClimAware (2010-2013, financé par IWRM-NET) a été réalisé pour développer des stratégies d'adaptation chargées de limiter les impacts du changement climatique dans plusieurs domaines liés à l'eau chacun étant étudié à partir de cas d'étude : hydro-morphologie en Allemagne, irrigation en Italie et gestion de réservoir en France. Une modélisation intégrée à l'échelle européenne a aussi été développé à des fins d'analyses croisées entre les deux échelles d'étude. Le cas d'étude sur la Seine se focalise sur l'adaptation de la gestion des réservoirs pour deux principaux objectifs : le soutien d'étiage et la gestion des crues dans le cadre des enjeux socio-économiques majeurs présents en Région Parisienne. Quatre grands réservoirs gérés par l'Etablissement Public Territorial de Bassin Seine Grands Lacs contrôlent la partie amont des quatre principaux affluents (Aube, Seine, Yonne et Marne). Une chaîne de modélisation hydrologique à pas de temps journalier a été développée pour simuler la gestion des réservoirs. Ses paramètres ont été calés à partir des conditions actuelles (1958-2009). La chaîne de modélisation a ensuite été forcée par les données en conditions actuelles (1961-1991) et en conditions futures (2046-2065) issues de sept modèles climatiques eux-mêmes forcés par le scénario A1B d'émissions de gaz à effet de serre. Cette modélisation a permis d'évaluer, à partir d'indicateurs de performance, l'impact du changement climatique pour différents scénarios de gestion des réservoirs. L'adaptation au changement climatique a été étudiée pour deux niveaux de gestion différents : - La gestion tactique actuellement basée sur des courbes annuelles de remplissage des réservoirs dessinées à partir d'une analyse des régimes hydrologiques et des événements extrêmes ; -La gestion opérationnelle prenant en compte les contraintes en temps réel et qui est actuellement réactive et décentralisée, dépendant uniquement des mesures locales disponibles (niveau du réservoir et débit à l'amont et à l'aval de celui-ci). Le scénario d'adaptation proposé pour la gestion tactique est basé sur une méthode statistique fournissant les courbes associées aux probabilités de risque d'échec de suivi d'un objectif dans le futur. De nouvelles courbes multi-objectif ont été dessinés à partir des données climatiques disponibles en minimisant le risque pour chaque objectif et en priorisant ceux-ci. L'adaptation de la gestion temps-réel a été réalisée via une commande prédictive (Tree-based Model Predictive Control, TB-MPC). Cette méthode, proactive et centralisée, utilise les informations disponibles en temps-réel, notamment les prévisions météorologiques d'ensemble, un modèle interne prédisant les effets futurs des commandes actuelles et une fonction objectif pénalisant les forts et faibles débits au niveau des stations situées à l'aval y compris à Paris. Le tout permet de trouver les commandes optimales des réservoirs. Les performances des stratégies d'adaptation pour les deux niveaux de gestion ont été testées en conditions climatiques présentes et futures et comparées avec celles de la gestion actuelle.

Abstract: International audience; The Seine River, in France, flows through territories of large economic value, among which the metropolitan area of Paris. A system of four reservoirs operates upstream to regulate the river flows in order to protect the area against extreme events, such as floods and droughts. Current reservoirs management is based on reactive filling curves, designed from an analysis of historical hydrological regimes. The efficiency of this management strategy is jeopardized when inflows are significantly different from their seasonal average. To improve the current management strategy, we investigated the use of Tree-Based Model Predictive Control (TB-MPC). TB-MPC is a proactive and centralized method that uses information available in real-time, as ensemble weather forecasts. Reservoir management is tested under past hydro-climatic conditions using time series of ensemble weather forecasts produced by ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) and weather observations. The performance of TB-MPC is compared to that of deterministic Model Predictive Control (MPC), showing the benefits of considering forecasts uncertainty by using ensemble forecasts.

Abstract: International audience; To fulfil the objectives of the ClimAware project, the following modelling methodology was implemented. Starting from a European modelling approach of water availability and use based on the WaterGAP3 model, the changes in the hydrologic regimes and water use of different sectors were analysed. Subsequently three case studies were used to investigate the impacts of CC at a regional scale. Regional models from three different countries and focusing on three types of water management issues were developed: • Hydromorphology (Eder basin, Germany): By using different scenarios, the influence of CC on the hydromorphological characteristics of the River Weser according to the WFD was evaluated and proposals for implementation were given. The objective was to examine, on typical river sections, how the WFD objectives can be implemented under CC constraints. • Dam management (Seine basin, France): Water management on the River Seine for water supply and flood alleviation is partly based on the management of artificial reservoirs. The case study developed scenarios linking the impact of CC on water resources and the expected change on the uses and on the management of the system. • Agricultural water use (Apulia region, Italy): In this region, economic and demographic changes cause an increase in the demand for good-quality municipal and industrial water. Besides, changes in the agricultural practices increase the demand for water in the agricultural sector. Since water is scarce in this region, the study focuses on the agricultural sector, which has the largest water saving potential. The final assessment comprises a cross-scale integration between the European and regional modelling frameworks in order to facilitate knowledge transfer and to help establishing sustainable and integrated water resources management plans.
