Abstract

BackgroundVisual impairment in developing countries has both social and economic impact on individuals and communities. Understanding the subjective visual functioning of populations will allow for local policymakers to identify the need for optometric or ophthalmic services in their communities.MethodsThe authors surveyed 644 adult patients in Mwanza, Tanzania at three clinics (Buzuruga, Mwananchi and Kisesa) using a modified Visual Functioning Questionnaire 25. Responses were categorized into General health, General vision, Ocular pain, Near activities, Distance activities, Social function, Mental health, Role difficulties, Color vision, Peripheral vision and Dependency.ResultsPatients at Buzuruga reported the lowest scores on most subscales. Of 100 employed patients, 37% claimed to have at least some difficulty in performing job duties due to their eyesight. At Kisesa, 146 (246/221) patients (66.1%) had never had an eye exam, compared with 134/227 (59.0%) at Buzuruga and 69/173 (39.9%) at Mwananchi (p

10. MOISTURE STUDY ON BOTANICAL COTTON TRASH.

Abstract

In a previous study, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was utilized in identifying different types of botanical cotton trash as each was subjected to simulations of ginning and textile processing. Changes in the hydroxyl region observed after heat treatment indicated the need to further understand the cause of these changes. This study will attempt to confirm that the changes observed in the infrared spectra were due to moisture. Reduced size trash samples of stem, leaf, hull, and seedcoat were exposed to three temperatures (66°, 107°, and 149° C) for 20 min and then allowed to recondition to standard room conditions (65% RH, 21° C). The moisture lost and regained were determined for each trash sample at each temperature. Concurrently, additional samples were used for infrared analysis. 11. FOURIER-TRANSFORM INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY ANALYSIS OF MODIFIED COTTON TRASH EXTRACTS.

Abstract

There is an ongoing research effort at the United States Department of Agriculture to improve an existing spectral database, enabling botanical cotton trash samples to be identified through the use of mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectroscopy. Leaf, hull, shale, stem, seed, and other types of trash have been reported to be problematic in the efficiency and quality of cotton throughout the textile spinning processes. Currently, several techniques are being employed to detect the presence of trash in cotton (ex. Shirley Analyzer, AFIS™, and HVI™), which are based on physical size and weight. However, more innovative methods need to be explored in order to classify specific types of trash found in cotton during different stages of ginning and textile processing. This research simulates ginning and textile processing by subjecting botanical trash samples to various size reductions and thermal conditions. Prior to performing extractions, trash samples were reduced from their raw sample size using a Wiley Mill with 20 and 80 meshes and then subjected to thermal treatments. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry was used for the fundamental analysis of these different trash extractions, which were obtained from simulated ginning and textile processing conditions. The infrared spectroscopic data indicated that this technique has the potential to be an approach for locating definite regions of trash types in samples by evaluating the differences that occurred due to heat and particle size reductions during ginning and textile processing. Abstract

The article reports that the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit held that the trustee for investment manager Sentinel Management Group proved at trial that the Bank of New York Mellon should have determined that the collateral that Sentinel had been pledging to secure its loan actually belonged to Sentinel's customers. The court decided that because the bank did not accept collateral from Sentinel in good faith, its liens were avoidable as fraudulent transfers.

•What is the primary question addressed by this study?—We developed and began implementation of a community-based, interdisciplinary dementia care intervention with dyad support provided by an unlicensed work force called Health Coaches.•What is the main finding of this study?—Dementia Care Partners partnered with three primary care clinics, identified eligible patients through an electronic health record algorithm, and enrolled 87 dyads from December 2018 to June 2020. We demonstrated feasibility, acceptability, and high satisfaction among primary care providers as well as dementia caregivers.•What is the meaning of the finding?—Use of Health Coaches to provide dyadic dementia care services in the community and supervised by an interdisciplinary team is a promising model of adjunctive dementia care in partnership with primary care providers. Future studies assessing potential cost savings and decreased healthcare utilization are needed.

14. The Interaction of Boronic Acid Based Self-Assembled Monolayers as a Potential Glucose Sensor

Abstract

Recognition of sugars such as glucose with phenylboronic acid–terminated self assembled monolayers (SAMs) was the basis for the designing and fabricating a biosensor. Self-assembled monolayers were formed on gold surfaces as shown by infrared spectroscopy. The continuous, repeatable increase of the electrochemical impedance as the concentration of glucose was increased gave indication of binding. This binding could be attributed to the precedent formation of relatively stable esters between phenylboronic acids and sugars. This impedance change upon binding between glucose and a phenylboronic acid-terminated SAM showed promise in the development of a glucose biosensor.
