Abstract

International audience; As part of the implementation of the National Action Plan on Micropollutants in the Aquatic Environment, the French Ministry of Ecology a large national screening study took place in 2012 in France. INERIS was charged with the design and technical implementation of this project for surface water. For the selection and prioritisation of the watch list compounds the National Expert Group for prioritisation of substances (CEP) decided to adopt the criteria of the NORMAN methodology for prioritisation of emerging substances.That methodology uses a decision tree that first classifies chemicals into six categories, on the basis of the existing knowledge gaps and the actions to be taken to fill them. The priority within each category is then ranked on the basis of specific indicators, which allows a score to be calculated. For surface water three campaigns were performed on water matrix and one in sediments at about 159 sampling points. Grab sampling was applied on all sites. In addition, passive samplers (POCIS) were deploied in 20 rivers in order to allow the implementation of bioassays. Sampling was carried out according to AQUAREF’s (National Reference Laboratory for Aquatic Environment) technical specifications and a unique courier was selected for transport of samples to the laboratories. The analytical work for a given group of compounds was performed by one single laboratory in order to ensure data comparability. Four academic laboratories were selected for chemical analyses. 170 substances were finally selected for chemical analysis in water and sediment.The benefits of this innovative approach for identification of relevant emerging contaminants are i) a unique prioritisation scheme (NORMAN Network) applied at French national level for substance and site selection; ii) Information on occurrence, source and variability for 170 substances (50 000 robust analytical data items) ; iii) an efficient method for data collection, validation and exploitation thanks to a unique data collection template and an exhaustive set of metadata; iv) the application of effect-based tools to classify 20 sites of various quality; to characterise site contamination a panel of in vitro and in vivo bioassays were deployed as well as biomarkers to assess impacts of pollutants in wild population of fish.The results contributed to the selection of substances to be integrated in the national river basins monitoring programmes.

Abstract

International audience; Contamination of river water and sediment constitutes a major environmental issue for industrialized countries. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of persistent organic pollutants characterized by two or more fused rings. In recent years, studies dealing with PAHs have grown in number. Some PAHs present indeed a high risk for environment and human health because of their carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. However, most of these studies focused on measuring PAH concentration in the different compartments of the environment (air, soil, sediment, water, etc.) In this context, there remains a lack of understanding regarding the various processes responsible for PAH transfers from one environmental compartment to another. Our study aims to quantify PAHs transfers at the catchment scale by combining chemical analysis with gamma spectrometry. Air, soil, river water and sediment samples (n=820) were collected in two upstream sub-catchments of the Seine River basin (France) during one year. Chemical analyses were carried out to determine PAHs concentrations in all samples. Furthermore, measurement of fallout radionuclides (Beryllium-7, Lead-210, Caesium-137) in both rainfall and river sediment provided a way to discriminate between freshly eroded sediment vs. resuspension of older material that previously deposited on the riverbed. This information is crucial to estimate PAH residence time and transfer velocities in the Seine River basin. The results show that the PAH behaviour varies from one subcatchment to the next. PAH transfers depend indeed on both the characteristics of the catchment (e.g. topography, presence of drained cropland in catchments) and the local anthropogenic pressures. A significant increase in atmospheric deposition of PAHs is observed during winter due to a larger number of sources (household heating). The 14-month study has also highlighted the seasonal variations of PAH fluxes, which are mainly related to the hydrological regimes (i.e. low flow vs. flood periods). The behaviour of the PAHs mainly depends on their molecular mass. The lightest ones tend to quickly migrate to rivers whereas the heaviest slowly accumulate in soils throughout the low-flow period. Then, an increase in PAH export associated with sediment is observed during the winter floods, when rivers are heavily loaded with suspended matter. The downstream exports of PAHs are controlled by the main erosion processes that occurred in the catchments. Results show that PAH fluxes are more important when material is mostly supplied to rivers by soil surface erosion processes than when they are delivered by gully or riverbank erosion. Despite the reduction in PAH emissions since the 1960s, there is still a significant storage of PAHs in the upstream part of the Seine River basin. In this context, WFD objectives are unlikely to be reached by 2015.

Abstract

In Kazakhstan, a deep ecological crisis has been caused by contamination of the environment with obsolete and expired pesticides (A. Nurzhanova et al., 2010). The Syr Darya (Kazakh) is a river in Central Asia that rises in two headstreams in the Tian Shan Mountains in Kyrgyzstan and eastern Uzbekistan-the Naryn River and the Kara Darya-and flows for some 2,212 kilometers (1,374 mi) west and north-west Uzbekistan and southern Kazakhstan to the remains of the Aral Sea. Disturbed aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity, and habitats are occurring in the Syr Darya, where factories, plants, and mining operations along the river present formidable environmental hazards (Blanchoud et al., 2009). In the present study, some organochlorine contaminants were determined in fish and sediments from the Syrdaria River Basin. Organochlorine pesticide (OCPs) sprays have high half-life, due to their chemical stability. Since they also exhibit a strong lipophilic character, they are prone to bioaccumulation. In Kazakhstan, hunting and fishing have become one of the fundamental sources of food, which may result in chronic exposure to OCPs via the diet, with potential health impacts. Numerous studies were carried out on biota of Caspian and Aral Sea, but very scarce information was collected for river fishes from this region.

Abstract

[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]ARCEAU; En 2006, la France se classait au deuxième rang des pays européens pour sa consommation d’antibiotiques avec 1295 tonnes consommées en médecine vétérinaire et 729 tonnes en médecine humaine (Goossens et al., 2005, AFSSA, 2006). Bien qu’il n’existe pas actuellement de réglementation concernant leur niveau de présence dans les rejets et l’environnement, ces données justifient l’intérêt et la nécessité de définir les sources et le mode de transfert de ces substances pharmaceutiques, afin d’obtenir une meilleure caractérisation de la présence de ces molécules et de leur comportement dans l’environnement. Au cours de la phase V du programme PIREN-Seine, un premier état des lieux de la contamination en médicaments de la Seine a été réalisé, ensuite nous nous sommes intéressés aux sources et aux devenir des antibiotiques dans le réseau hydrographique. Ce rapport présente les travaux d’Eau de Paris et résume les travaux de thèse de F. Tamtam (2008) et T. Dinh (soutenance prévue fin 2011).

We prove some existence, uniqueness and regularity results for the solutions to the Stokes problem in R[sup n], n≥2 in weighted Sobolev spaces (formula available within PDF) . This framework enables us to characterise for which data the problem has solutions with prescribed decay or growth at infinity. Moreover, we obtain an explicit representation as well as an asymptotic expansion of the solution for non-smooth decaying data. Abstract

The lens-specific proteins alpha and delta crystallins and lentoid bodies, structures that follow a differentiation pathway similar to that of the lens, regularly appear after 4 to 5 weeks in quail embryo neuroretina monolayer cultures. We have investigated the effects of the avian oncogenic retroviruses Mill Hill 2 and Rous sarcoma virus on this process. Quail embryo neuroretina cells transformed by Mill Hill 2 virus were established into permanent cultures that synthesized alpha and delta crystallins and contained stem cells for the production of lentoid bodies. In contrast, transformation with the Rous sarcoma virus mutant tsNY-68 blocked the appearance of mRNA crystallins, but cytoplasmic alpha and delta crystallin mRNA and alpha crystallin appeared 44 h after a shift to the nonpermissive temperature. However, delta crystallins and lentoid bodies were only present after 7 days. The crystallins of transformed quail neuroretina cultures were immunologically indistinguishable from those of quail lenses and of normal quail embryo neuroretina cultures.

Abstract

As suggested by Del Rio Ortega a long time ago, it is now widely accepted that microglia are the resident macrophages of the central nervous system. Microglia represent about 10% of the adult brain cell population. We have previously shown that the late embryonic and adult mouse brain contain potential microglial progenitors. We report here that microglial progenitors can be detected in neural folds from embryonic day 8. They originate from the yolk sac in which macrophage progenitors are found from embryonic day 7. We also report that the bulk of microglial cells (about 95%) appear during post-natal development. A major finding is that microglia arise by an intense in situ proliferation comparable to that of neural cells. Taken together, these results show that adult mouse microglia originate from cells migrating from the yolk sac and whose progeny actively proliferates in the brain during development.
