Abstract

Heart failure is a condition that affects a great part of the world population. A heart transplant is one of the alternatives to survive heart failure. Since the organ donors are very limited and the wait list for the organ is very long it is difficult to find the organ. A viable alternative until the organ becomes available is the total artificial heart (TAH) and ventricle assisting devices. The total artificial heart is used to bridge the time to heart transplants. There are different types of artificial hearts. In this paper, we compared the various TAH devices by creating a database, and by using a simulation we determined which device is the best out in the market. We used Fuzzy Promethee as the methodology. It is observed that with pneumatic (SynCardia) TAHs as a bridge to transplant, promising results have been achieved, but still, they are not free of problems. Nevertheless, implantable total artificial hearts have a long way to go if they are to replace the natural heart permanently, made for destination therapy. So far, the only device that is commercially approved is SynCardia TAH, it's the only one in the market for patient use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

27. Testing for Panel Unit Roots in the Presence of an Unknown Structural Break and Cross-Sectional Dependency

Abstract

This paper introduces two different non-parametric tests for panel unit root based on the wavelet decomposition of time series which may be used in the presence of cross-sectional dependency and an unknown structural break in the data. These tests are compared with the parametric IPS test proposed by Im, Pesaran and Shin (1997) and the Wald test suggested by Taylor and Sarno (1998). By means of Monte Carlo simulations, the results shown that the size and power properties of the new non-parametric tests are robust to cross sectional dependency of the error terms. Furthermore, it is shown that the tests may be used when the time series has an unknown structural break. These tests have also shown to have high power against the alternative hypothesis under the above mentioned conditioned, whiles the IPS and the Wald did not have any power to reject the alternative hypothesis in the presence of structural break in the data.

Kvinnor utgör en klar minoritet inom området informations- och kommunikationsteknologi, både inom den högre utbildningen och på arbetsmarknaden. Artikeln problematiserar relationen mellan den högre tekniska utbildningen och positioner på arbetsmarknaden. Får kvinnor och män samma utbyte av sin ingenjörsexamen i arbetslivet? Resultaten visar att män i större utsträckning än kvinnor når högre positioner. Vidare ser vi att kvinnor stannar i lågkvalificerade jobb i högre utsträckning än män.

29. Testing the Periodicity on the Swedish Varve Data

Abstract

A glacial varve chronology from Sweden spanning the 2304–year period from -355 to 1979 A.D was analysed for evidence of climate variability during the last 2000 year. The data was analysed for significant broad band periodicities and narrow band periodicities. By using the F test based multitaper analysis, the band periodogram and wavelet Fisher tests we analyse the data and test for significant narrow and broad band cycles. The results show that we have a significant periodicity at 14, 11 and 2 year.

Abstract

In this paper we utilise the wavelet transform to analyse the Swedish wind speed data from monitoring centers at different locations throughout Sweden. The long memory structure has been tested by using least squares method. The wavelet variance has been applied for studying the variations at different scales. The wavelet variance shows to be a useful tool in detecting the variations at different scales.

Abstract

This paper introduces and describes an alternative clustering approach based on the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) which satisfies requirements that other clustering methods, like discriminative-based clustering and model-based clustering approaches, do not satisfy. The clustering method has been constructed using wavelet analysis that has the ability of decomposing a data set into different scales. Wavelet algorithm is then used to specify the number of the clusters and quality of the clustering results at each scale. The same algorithm can be generalised for more than one-dimensional data. Some examples about how to use this approach are presented in the paper using different sample sizes and where different kinds of noises are imposed on simulated data. These examples show the successfulness and efficiency of this kind of methodology in detecting clusters under different situations.

This paper describes a new approach to analys the Fractional Difference (FD) processes using spectral analysis. The approach is based on the periodogram and the main idea behind it is to divide the Fourier frequencies into different frequency intervals or bands, matching the band-pass of the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). Abstract

In this study, we use the wavelet analysis to construct a test statistic to test for the existence of a trend in the series. We also propose a new approach for testing the presence of trend based on the periodogram of the data. Since we are also interested in the presence of a long-memory process among the data, we study the properties of our test statistics under different degrees of dependency. We compare the results when using the band periodogram test and the wavelet test with results obtained by applying the ordinary least squares (OLS) method under the same conditions.

Abstract

Background: The emergence of smartphones has sparked a transformation across multiple fields, with health care being one of the most notable due to the advent of mobile health (mHealth) apps. As mHealth apps have gained popularity, there is a need to understand their energy consumption patterns as an integral part of the evolving landscape of health care technologies., Objective: This study aims to identify the key contributors to elevated energy consumption in mHealth apps and suggest methods for their optimization, addressing a significant void in our comprehension of the energy dynamics at play within mHealth apps., Methods: Through quantitative comparative analysis of 10 prominent mHealth apps available on Android platforms within the United States, this study examined factors contributing to high energy consumption. The analysis included descriptive statistics, comparative analysis using ANOVA, and regression analysis to examine how certain factors impact energy use and consumption., Results: Observed energy use variances in mHealth apps stemmed from user interactions, features, and underlying technology. Descriptive analysis revealed variability in app energy consumption (150-310 milliwatt-hours), highlighting the influence of user interaction and app complexity. ANOVA verified these findings, indicating the critical role of engagement and functionality. Regression modeling (energy consumption = β₀ + β₁ × notification frequency + β₂ × GPS use + β₃ × app complexity + ε), with statistically significant P values (notification frequency with a P value of .01, GPS use with a P value of .05, and app complexity with a P value of .03), further quantified these bases' effects on energy use., Conclusions: The observed differences in the energy consumption of dietary apps reaffirm the need for a multidisciplinary approach to bring together app developers, end users, and health care experts to foster improved energy conservation practice while achieving a balance between sustainable practice and user experience.
