2. Automatic Exercise Generation for Exploring Connections between Mathematics and Music

Abstract

Mathematics and Music are closely connected and their multifaceted relationship has been explored since ancient times. Pythagoras was one of the first who discovered and formalized one of those connections by studying the arithmetic of musical intervals, expressing them by numerical ratios and relating ratios to consonance/dissonance notions, being the Pythagorean tuning and scale based on arithmetic principles. Another interesting link between Mathematics and Music is the geometric approach to musical composition. Geometric patterns are present in different musical style compositions and some composing techniques, such as the 12-tone technique, use geometric transformations, involving also applications of modular arithmetic and set theory to Music. The aim of this work is to present existing relations between Mathematics and Music and to propose automatic exercise generation for exploring and studying those relations. The exercises are generated using the system MVGEN and the LaTeX package MusiXTeX. The generation process and the automatically generated exercises can be used for creating learning and assessment materials for education in Mathematics and Music, linking Science and Art.

Abstract

Private and military troll factories (facilities used to spread rumours in online social media) are currently proliferating around the world. By their very nature, they are obscure companies whose internal workings are largely unknown, apart from leaks to the press. They are even more concealed when it comes to their underlying technology. At least in a broad sense, it is believed that there are two main tasks performed by a troll factory: sowing and spreading. The first is to create and, more importantly, maintain a social network that can be used for the spreading task. It is then a wicked long-term activity, subject to all sorts of problems. As an attempt to make this perspective a little clearer, this paper uses exploratory design science research to produce artefacts that could be applied to online rumour spreading in social media. Then, as a hypothesis: it is possible to design a fully automated social media agent capable of sowing a social network on microblogging platforms. The expectation is that it will be possible to identify common opportunities and difficulties in the development of such tools, which in turn will allow an evaluation of the technology, but above all the level of automation of these facilities. The research is based on a general domain Twitter corpus with 4M + tokens and on ChatGPT, and discusses both knowledge-based and deep learning approaches for smooth tweet generation. These explorations suggest that for the current, widespread and publicly available NLP technology, troll factories work like a call centre; i.e. humans assisted by more or less sophisticated computing tools (often called cyborgs). Abstract

This paper explores the possibility of large language models as a fourth generation programming language compiler. This is based on the idea that large language models are able to translate a natural language specification into a program written in a particular programming language. In other words, just as high-level languages provided an additional language abstraction to assembly code, large language models can provide an additional language abstraction to high-level languages. This interpretation allows large language models to be thought of through the lens of compiler theory, leading to insightful conclusions.

Nevertheless, the process of performing a depth-first walk through the DOM, and synthesizing values, is a simple way to traverse and transform an entire XML document. In this document we discuss the details on the implementation and usage of a Python package for XML document processing based on this structure. Given the existence of similar tools for other programming languages, we will mainly focus on the used approach, that takes advantage of the Python style guides and development patterns.

Question answering systems are mainly concerned with fulfilling an information query written in natural language, given a collection of documents with relevant information. They are key elements in many popular application systems as personal assistants, chat-bots, or even FAQ-based online support systems. This paper describes an exploratory work carried out to come up with a state-of-the-art model for question-answering tasks, for the Portuguese language, based on deep neural networks. We also describe the automatic construction of a data-set for training and testing the model. The final model is not trained in any specific topic or context, and is able to handle generic documents, achieving 50% accuracy in the testing data-set. Abstract

In the context of game development, there is always the need for describing behaviors for various entities, whether NPCs or even the world itself. That need requires a formalism to describe properly such behaviors. As the gaming industry has been growing, many approaches were proposed. First, finite state machines were used and evolved to hierarchical state machines. As that formalism was not enough, a more powerful concept appeared. Instead of using states for describing behaviors, people started to use tasks. This concept was incorporated in behavior trees. This paper focuses in the specification and processing of Behavior Trees. A DSL designed for that purpose will be introduced. It will also be discussed a generator that produces LATEX diagrams to document the trees, and a Python module to implement the behavior described. Additionally, a simulator will be presented. Abstract

In this paper, we'll discuss a simple approach to integrating musical events, such as notes or chords, into a programming language. This means treating music sequences as a first class citizen. It will be possible to save those sequences into variables or play them right away, pass them into functions or apply operators on them (like transposing or repeating the sequence). Furthermore, instead of just allowing static sequences to be generated, we'll integrate a music keyboard system that easily allows the user to bind keys (or other kinds of events) to expressions. Finally, it is important to provide the user with multiple and extensible ways of outputing their music, such as synthesizing it into a file or directly into the speakers, or writing a MIDI or music sheet file. We'll structure this paper first with an analysis of the problem and its particular requirements. Then we will discuss the solution we developed to meet those requirements. Finally we'll analyze the result and discuss possible alternative routes we could've taken.
