1. The development of a porous ceramic water hydrostatic bearing for ultra high precision applications

Abstract

The principal objective of this research was to produce a series of extremely stiff and thermally stable porous ceramic bearings, and to expand the performance envelope of fluid film technology beyond that currently achievable with conventional oil hydrostatic bearings. The driving force for these developments came from recent advances in ultra- precision and high speed machining, which have placed severe demands on the accuracy and performance of spindle and guide-way bearing systems. A critical part of this research was to develop a material processing methodology, which enabled porous ceramic bearing structures to be manufactured with consistent permeability coefficients. Such control of the material microstructure was necessary in order to produce a useful and predetermined level of performance. The bearings were fabricated using bimodal blends of alumina powder, and vibratory packing into graphite tooling was used to achieve uniform green densities. Following this, the tooling was transferred directly to a hot isostatic press for capsule free high pressure sintering. The influence of temperature and pressure on sintering and permeability was studied, and optimum processing conditions were established. The operation of the water lubricated porous hydrostatic bearing was investigated on a highly instrumented journal test rig. This research has resulted in a bearing with greater stiffness, higher operating speed and lower power consumption than conventional oil hydrostatic technology could achieve. Significant savings were also shown regarding the energy required to drive the spindle assembly, with a reduction in both rotating frictional power and lubricant pumping power consumption.

9. Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) seroprevalence and current epidemiology in England and Wales

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The introduction of the Hib conjugate vaccine in the United Kingdom resulted in a rapid decline in invasive Hib disease across all age groups. However, a resurgence in 2000-2002 prompted the introduction of additional control measures, including a routine 12-month booster in 2006. Here we describe results from a national serosurvey in children eligible for the 12-month booster and recent Haemophilus influenzae epidemiology in England and Wales. METHODS: A national serosurvey was performed to determine the prevalence of anti-polyribosyl-phosphate (anti-PRP) IgG antibodies in 1000 residual samples from children up to 8 years of age in 2013-2014. Data were compared to previous national serosurveys performed by the same laboratory. Current epidemiology of invasive H. influenzae disease in England and Wales is also reported. RESULTS: Median anti-PRP IgG concentrations were highest among 1 year olds at 4.5 µg/mL (95%CI, 0.93-33.6; n = 55) and then declined rapidly but remained ≥1.0 µg/mL across the age-groups in the cohort eligible for the 12-month booster. Overall, 89% of children (719/817) had anti-PRP concentrations ≥0.15 µg/mL, the putative threshold for short-term protectionagainst invasive Hib disease. During 2012-2016, annual Hib disease incidence remained below one case per million population, with only 67 of 3523 (2.5%) laboratory-confirmed H. influenzae cases and one case of Hib meningitis during the 5-year period. There were only two deaths within 30 days over the five-year period (case fatality rate, 3.0%). CONCLUSIONS: Hib control in England and Wales is currently the best achieved since the vaccine was introduced more than two decades ago. However, Hib antibodies wane rapidly after the 12 months booster. Although most children remain protected against disease, antibody levels may not be high enough to prevent carriage among toddlers. Ongoing monitoring is essential to inform future vaccination policy.

Abstract

The author has identified the following significant results. The best dates for automatic data processing analysis appeared to be in midsummer. The level 2 separation of grassland, water, and other resources was reasonably successful, but the level 3 separation of grassland into cultivated (growing crops) and weeds did not appear feasible. Low simulated inventory proportions of grassland indicated that the restricted inventory signature was not representative of all grassland classes and could not be extended with acceptable accuracy.

Instruction for acquiring and analytically processing small-scale color-infrared photography to perform a soil resources inventory over forests of the southern U.S. is provided. The procedures for preparing ancillary and primary component overlays are discussed. The use of correlation charts and dichotomous keys for mountain landforms, water regime, and vegetation is explained.

Abstract

This report describes the first-year (1998) results of a two-year field demonstration conducted to determine if phytoextraction is a viable and feasible technology for remediation of metals (specifically lead) in soil. The project goal was to demonstrate the effectiveness of phytoextraction techniques for removing ionic lead from contaminated soils. The report also provides preliminary implementation guidance for implementing this technology based on the 1998 field results. During the demonstration, soil acidifiers and a chelating agent were used to increase the water solubility of lead and the availability of lead to plants. The demonstration was conducted at the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant in Arden Hills, Minnesota. The report indicates that phytoextraction methods using corn performed near expectations; however, methods using white mustard did not meet the expected level of performance. Alternative crops to white mustard for cool season use are being considered and tested. A preliminary economic analysis indicates the technique will be economically viable.

The report provides demonstration results as they are related to the effectiveness of the wetlands; and provides cost and other information necessary for the transfer of the technology to the user community. Abstract

This report describes the results of a Plant Uptake Study conducted to determine if plants would take up explosives or explosive by-products from composted explosives-contaminated soil. The study was conducted using compost produced during the remediation of an explosives-contaminated site at the U.S. Army's Umatilla Army Depot Activity at Hermiston, Oregon. This compost was shipped to the Tennessee Valley Authority's Environmental Research Facility In Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where the study was conducted. The report concludes that the plants did not cause an increase in levels of explosives or explosive degradation by-products In the compost nor did they take up explosives or explosive by-products.

Abstract

This report describes the results of greenhouse studies conducted to determine if phytoextraction methods could be enhanced by increasing ionic lead's solubility in water. Soil acidifiers and chelating agents were used to increase lead's solubility in water. The study was conducted using lead contaminated soil from the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant near Desoto, Kansas. These soils were shipped to the Tennessee Valley Authority's Environmental Research Facility in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where the study was conducted. The report concludes that phytoextraction methods may be enhanced by these techniques and that the risk of leaching lead out of the soil's root zone is minimal.

Abstract

This document describes studies conducted at the Milan Army Ammunition Plant (MAAP) to improve the design, operation, and cost of gravel-based anaerobic cells when phytoremediating explosives-contaminated groundwater. A typical gravel-based wetland consists of an anaerobic cell for removing the bulk of the explosive-contaminates; and an aerobic cell for removing CBOD-5, nutrients, total suspended solids, and small quantities of explosive by-products. The cells are connected in series with the anaerobic cell being the first cell. To conduct this study, small-scale anaerobic test cells were used to determine: (1) If the hydraulic retention time of a large demonstration-scale anaerobic cell at MAAP could be reduced, and (2) if other carbon sources could be used as an anaerobic feedstock. The study results indicated that: (1) The existing anaerobic cell's 7.5-day retention time should not be reduced since residual explosive by-products were present in the effluent of treatments with a 3.5-day retention time. (2) Daily application of a relatively soluble substrate, such as molasses syrup, will provide better explosives removal than periodic application of less soluble substrates like milk replacement starter and sewage sludge. (3) Molasses syrup could be, and should be, used as a substitute for milk replacement power. The recommendation to use molasses syrup was based on: (1) The lower cost of molasses syrup as compared to milk replacement starter, (2) molasses syrup's higher solubility (which makes it easier to apply), and (3) molasses syrup's ability to provide enhanced explosives removal.

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis was to determine the important management activities performed by Army lieutenant colonels. This was accomplished by the administration of a questionnaire to a sample of 93 active duty Army lieutenant colonels. The questionnaire consisted of two parts, one dealing with activities performed as part of the management process and the other concerend with background variables of the respondents. Data were analyzed using Statistical Analysis System (SAS) procedures. In addition to the determination of the relative order of importance of the management activities, factor analysis was used to group similar activities together in factor states. These factor states were then compared to the background variables, with the result that seventeen relationships were determined to be statistically significant. Results of this research may be used to develop output measures for middle level managers of budget-based organizations, leading to the development of a productivity measurement method for this particular subset of knwledge workers. Abstract

As we enter the next phase of international policy commitments to halt biodiversity loss (e.g., Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework), biodiversity indicators will play an important role in forming the robust basis upon which targeted, and time sensitive conservation actions are developed. Population trend indicators are one of the most powerful tools in biodiversity monitoring due to their responsiveness to changes over short timescales and their ability to aggregate species trends from global down to sub-national or even local scale. We consider how the project behind one of the foremost population level indicators - the Living Planet Index - has evolved over the last 25 years, its value to the field of biodiversity monitoring, and how its components have portrayed a compelling account of the changing status of global biodiversity through its application at policy, research and practice levels. We explore ways the project can develop to enhance our understanding of the state of biodiversity and share lessons learned to inform indicator development and mobilise action., (© 2023. Abstract

Certain infectious agents are recognised causes of cancer and other chronic diseases. To understand the pathological mechanisms underlying such relationships, here we design a Multiplex Serology platform to measure quantitative antibody responses against 45 antigens from 20 infectious agents including human herpes, hepatitis, polyoma, papilloma, and retroviruses, as well as Chlamydia trachomatis, Helicobacter pylori and Toxoplasma gondii, then assayed a random subset of 9695 UK Biobank participants. We find seroprevalence estimates consistent with those expected from prior literature and confirm multiple associations of antibody responses with sociodemographic characteristics (e.g., lifetime sexual partners with C. trachomatis), HLA genetic variants (rs6927022 with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) EBNA1 antibodies) and disease outcomes (human papillomavirus-16 seropositivity with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, and EBV responses with multiple sclerosis). Our accessible dataset is one of the largest incorporating diverse infectious agents in a prospective UK cohort offering opportunities to improve our understanding of host-pathogen-disease relationships with significant clinical and public health implications., (© 2022.
