Abstract

We consider a new perspective on dialog state tracking (DST), the task of estimating a user's goal through the course of a dialog. By formulating DST as a semantic parsing task over hierarchical representations, we can incorporate semantic compositionality, cross-domain knowledge sharing and co-reference. We present TreeDST, a dataset of 27k conversations annotated with tree-structured dialog states and system acts. We describe an encoder-decoder framework for DST with hierarchical representations, which leads to 20% improvement over state-of-the-art DST approaches that operate on a flat meaning space of slot-value pairs., Comment: Publish as a conference paper at EMNLP 2020

Abstract

We propose UDP, the first training-free parser for Universal Dependencies (UD). Our algorithm is based on PageRank and a small set of head attachment rules. It features two-step decoding to guarantee that function words are attached as leaf nodes. The parser requires no training, and it is competitive with a delexicalized transfer system. UDP offers a linguistically sound unsupervised alternative to cross-lingual parsing for UD, which can be used as a baseline for such systems. Abstract

Multitask learning has been applied successfully to a range of tasks, mostly morphosyntactic. However, little is known on when MTL works and whether there are data characteristics that help to determine its success. In this paper we evaluate a range of semantic sequence labeling tasks in a MTL setup. We examine different auxiliary tasks, amongst which a novel setup, and correlate their impact to data-dependent conditions. Our results show that MTL is not always effective, significant improvements are obtained only for 1 out of 5 tasks. Abstract

Defoliating insects’ outbreaks play a critical role in trees’ carbon cycle. The pine processionary moth (PPM; Thaumetopoea pityocampa) is the major defoliating insect of Mediterranean coniferous forests. The frequency and intensity of PPM outbreaks is projected to increase as winter temperatures become milder due to climate warming. An accurate evaluation of this projection requires a wide spatial baseline of the historical PPM incidence. PPM outbreaks affect tree secondary growth leading to narrow rings, providing a tree level signal. However, PPM defoliation rings can be confounded with drought rings, the most frequent cause of narrow rings in Mediterranean environments. Thus, an accurate identification of PPM rings demands the consideration of additional tree ring traits. Here, we introduce a multiproxy approach to identify and distinguish PPM and drought events. We sampled four Pinus nigra (3) and P. sylvestris (1) stands in Spain. We identified and verified years of PPM defoliation using remote sensing analysis and field observations of Regional Forest Service. We identified drought events through the combination of climatic data with radial growth reductions. We considered climate growth residuals, among-trees growth variability, latewood percentage (%LW), intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) and minimum blue intensity (BI) to discern between droughts and PPM outbreaks. In comparison with drought rings, PPM rings showed 1) more negative residuals in climate growth models, 2) higher secondary growth variance, 3) higher percentage of latewood and 4) lower iWUE. Minimum BI did not differ between drought and PPM rings, but was lower than in the rest of the rings. The combination of these traits provides a signature to identify PPM rings, opening the opportunity to reconstruct PPM incidence on a broad spatio-temporal scale.

Abstract

[EN] Trace elements are serious pollutants in the natural environment and are of increasing concern due to the adverse effects at global scale. To refine the current understanding of trace metal distribution and variability in natural environments, concentrations of dissolved trace metals (Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Co, Cr, Cd, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Th,Tl, U, V, Mn, Zn), major ions, inorganic nutrients (NO3, PO4), TOC and stable isotopes of water were determined in water samples from rainwater, seven piezometers and a pond in the coastal Doñana wetland during four sampling campaigns between 2017 and 2019. Results show clear evaporation signatures of stable isotopes in the pond but not in the groundwater. Hydrochemical analyses yield significant, systematic changes in groundwater trace metal and nutrient composition along the flowpath from the dune belt to the pond, controlled by organic matter in the sediments. Whereas major ions reached maximum concentrations in the pond due to evapoconcentration, most trace metals showed highest concentrations at sites with lower redox levels, except for B, As and U, which showed very high concentrations in the pond. Cu, Zn, Ni, Sb and Tl yielded higher median concentrations in rainwater than in most of the groundwater points and in case of Cu and Zn higher even than in surface water which points to an atmospheric input source of these elements. Temporal variability of trace metals was related to lower hydraulic heads after an elongated dry period which led to lower redox levels and higher concentrations of most of the trace elements whereas major ions showed more constant concentration levels. This is of special concern regarding climate change and the predicted higher frequency of prolonged dry periods, which could modify the natural hydrochemical patterns in undisturbed wetlands systems.

Abstract

[EN] This article presents Q-Facies, an open-source Python package for quantitative analysis of hydrochemical facies (HF). HF is widely used to interpret the chemical characteristics of groundwater. However, it is difficult to analyse its spatial or temporal variability due to its qualitative nature and the small number of classes. To avoid these limitations, Q-Facies performs the parametrization of HF based on the calculation of five statistical indices on the Piper diagram: Blau, Standard Distance, Area, Shape and Orientation indices. The latter two allow the identification of ongoing facies-modifying hydrochemical phenomena. The software relies on standard Python libraries, and is available as a GitHub repository.

Abstract

[EN] The Doñana National Park (DNP) is a protected area with water resources drastically diminishing due to the unsustainable extraction of groundwater for agricultural irrigation and human consumption of a nearby coastal city. In this study, we explore the potential of wavelet analysis applied to high-temporal-resolution groundwater-and-surface-water time series of temporary coastal ponds in the DNP. Wavelet analysis was used to measure the frequency of changes in water levels and water temperature, both crucial to our understanding of complex hydrodynamic patterns. Results show that the temporary ponds are groundwater-dependent ecosystems of a through-flow type and are still connected to the sand-dune aquifer, regardless of their hydrological affection, due to groundwater withdrawal. These ponds, even those most affected by pumping in nearby drills, are not perched over the saturated zone. This was proven by the evidence of a semi-diurnal (i.e., 6 h) signal in the surface-level time series of the shallow temporary ponds. This signal is, at the same time, related to the influence of the tides affecting the coastal sand-dune aquifer. Finally, we detected other hydrological processes that affect the ponds, such as evaporation and evapotranspiration, with a clear diurnal (12 h) signal. The maintenance of the ecological values and services to the society of this emblematic wetland is currently in jeopardy, due to the effect of the groundwater abstraction for irrigation. The results of this study contribute to the understanding of the behavior of these fragile ecosystems of DNP, and will also contribute to sound-integrated water-resource management.

Abstract

[EN] Five decades of intensive groundwater exploitation have brought important economic, social and environmental changes in Medina del Campo Groundwater Body (MCGWB). Declining piezometric levels have worsened water quality, increased the costs of water supply and abstraction, and drained connected wetlands and rivers. This chapter presents the different methods and tools developed to assess the impacts and effectiveness for adaptation to droughts of the selected NAS strategies in biophysical, economic and social terms. It follows the methodologies presented in Chaps. 4, 5 and 6. It also summarizes the approaches for integrating all these assessments, as well as the main conclusions and lessons learnt. Important progress has been achieved on understanding and modelling the aquifer-system dynamics and functioning. First, geological and geophysical data analysis, debugging and integration have provided a basis for constructing a set of geological models of the MCGWB. Second, water balance components need to be updated through a deeper analysis of the recharge and groundwater abstractions (pumping). Third, a trend analysis of critical groundwater-related ecosystem services (GRES) and piezometric levels points at groundwater abstraction reductions as the most effective measure for a widespread recovery of the groundwater levels and storage. Fifth, the proposed managed artificial recharge would have limited effects on the recovery of the surface water bodies and no effect on the groundwater bodies. Sixth, the environmental reconstruction from a sedimentary record of the main wetland bed (Lagunas Reales) provides a reference knowledge base to understand the system response to human and climate changes. Finally, different barriers for design and implementation of NAS strategies have been identified and evaluated. Particularly, the lack of effective interaction mechanisms among the different actors involved/interested in the process could play a key role in the future.

Abstract

[EN] A novel methodology is presented for measuring weathering microrates after one-year of direct exposure of rocks to environment. The study focuses on building materials used in the cultural heritage exposed to semiarid coastal Mediterranean climate (SE Spain). Three different carbonate rocks, with significant differences in porosity and texture, were studied in two different exposition orientations (north and south). Results are interpreted according to local microenvironmental conditions and petrologic aspects (porosity, pore size distribution and mineralogy). South-facing rock blocks show the highest weathering microrates (9130 mm/ky and 18750 mm/ky for fine and coarse-grained porous limestones, respectively). They are 1.55 and 1.92 times higher than rates obtained in north-facing rock samples. Physical and chemical decay mechanisms overlap in the weathering process. On the one hand, physical processes are more evident in porous limestones, being predominant in south exposure samples. On the other hand, chemical corrosion is the main weathering mechanism in massive limestones as well as in porous limestones with unstable components. Dissolution prevails in northern exposure. Obtained weathering rates are two to three magnitude orders higher than the erosion rates measured in the same rocks, highlighting the conceptual differences between both parameters.

Abstract

Tree pollarding was a dominant management strategy of European forests for centuries creating open agroforestry landscapes with important cultural and environmental values. This traditional practice has been widely abandoned in last decades with a subsequent impact in terms of biodiversity and cultural loss. Central Spain hosts the largest and best-preserved area of pollarded narrow-leaved ash (Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl.) woodlands in Europe. The main aim of this research is to obtain rigorous historical records of pollarding frequency to get adequate information for traditional ash management. We used dendrochronological techniques to evaluate temporal changes of pollarding frequency and rotation length. We analysed the stand level synchrony and the effect of land property on pollarding activity from 322 trees growing in eight pollard stands in Central Spain. Pollarding events were unequivocally identified at tree level by a characteristic change in growth pattern. We identified 2426 tree-level pruning events with the first event dated in 1777. Historical pruning recurrence ranged between 5 and 10 years with higher pollarding frequency on private lands. Pruning events within each site were synchronous, suggesting the existence of a rotational schema within each stand. Pruning frequency decreased drastically in the 1970s matching with the depopulation of rural areas and the general abandonment of traditional practices. Pollarding practices have recovered in recent decades although with lower intensity and lacking the synchronic historical patterns. Providing technical and economic support to make this traditional activity profitably would have strong environmental revenue due the multiple ecosystem services provided by pollarded ashes.

Abstract

[EN] Simulating flow through multilayer aquifer systems is essential for groundwater management applications such evaluating natural recharge, assessing managed aquifer recharge (MAR), the characterization of surface water–groundwater interactions, and groundwater pollution risk analysis. However, dealing with flow through variably saturated porous media with perched water tables is a difficult task. Usual codes for groundwater flow modeling such asMODFLOW, TOUGH2, and FEFLOW require tedious procedures based on simplified assumptions and approximations. This paper presents a simple approach to simulate two-dimensional flow through perched aquifers and aquitards in deep vadose zones by combining the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions that may apply to any code simulating unsaturated flow. The proposed approach is illustrated with the unsaturated flow code VS2DTI.

Abstract

[EN] The continuous technological progress, the reduction in the cost of instrumental and analytical techniques, the diversification of data sources (e.g., satellites, remote sensors, etc.) together with the growth in the capacity of databases, as well as the easy-open access to them, have led in recent years to an exponential increase in the hydrogeological information available. One relevant line of work of the research group Environmental Hydrogeology and Global Change (HYGLO-Lab) focuses on developing novel tools to facilitate hydrogeological data's graphical, cartographic, and statistical interpretation. This line started with the INAQUAS software that allows the calculation of hydrochemical parameters and the realization of traditional graphs in spreadsheets. However, these tools have proved to be insufficient in the face of large databases, especially some of the most commonly used graphs, such as the Piper diagram. In this context, the D-Piper software has recently been published, which allows the creation of a modified Piper diagram based on the spatial point density and data distribution characteristics. This graph provides information about the facies distribution on the diagram, Increasing its precision with the number of analyses available. Also, a methodology integrated into the Q-Facies software (QFacies) has been developed to treat the spatial or temporal evolution of the hydrochemical facies as a continuous variable, thus overcoming the difficulties of working with the few discrete qualitative values of the traditional representation. In the hydrogeological characterization of the unsaturated zone, progress has been made in developing tools (R-Infiltrometry) to visualize and interpret in situ tests of unsaturated hydraulic permeability of soils, including double-ring infiltrometry, single ring infiltrometry, and other methods.

Abstract

[EN] The current Global Warming of planet Earth is probably the most important geological phenomenon in the last 20,000 years of its history and for human race. This process is having nowadays notable effects on the climate, ecosystems and natural resources. Possibly the most important renewable geological resource is water. One of the most strategic phases of the water cycle is groundwater. Despite its low visibility, quantitatively (and qualitatively too) it is essential for life on Planet Earth. Foreseeable consequences on groundwater due to climate change and sea level rise will be very significant. Hydrogeology can provide answers to many of the questions that are beginning to be raised in relation to these impacts and their effects. Environmental hydrogeology is a way of understanding the set of disciplines mixed in Hydrogeology as a Science of Nature. The HYGLO-Lab Research Group of the IGME-CSIC National Center attempts, through its lines of research, with a double global and local component, to provide answers to some of these questions.

[EN] This paper summarizes the research work that is being carried out within the framework of three international projects with a lifetime between 2022 and 2026: (1) LIFE-IP-Duero; (2) Supporting stakeholders for adaptive, resilience and sustainable water management; (3) IGCP- 730. (1) and (2) are developed in the Duero river basin and are funded by the European Commission meanwhile (3) is being developed in the Duero and Miño-Sil basins and is funded by the International Geosciences Programme (IGCP) of UNESCO.
