The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a lot of stress for healthcare personnel. They are subjected to arduous and stressful working hours and may contract infection. The objectives of this study were to (i) assess the level of occupational stress and the prevalence of burnout among healthcare workers (HCWs) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the COVID-19 pandemic and (ii) to identify some sociodemographic characteristics and work-related factors that may influence the level of stress and burnout among such HCWs. An online survey was distributed on social media websites and groups of HCWs in KSA. The survey depended on the stress domain of Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) and the work-related burnout domain of Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI). Data were collected using a Google form and then analyzed. Among 478 respondents, 37.7% of studied HCWs reported mild to extremely severe stress, and 47.9% of them reported work-related burnout. Occupational stress and burnout were more prevalent among front-line HCWs (43.9% and 55%) than among second-line HCWs (31.2% and 40.8%). The mean scores of occupational stress and burnout were significantly much higher among frontline physicians and nurses particularly those who are females, of younger age (≤40 years), with few years of work experience (≤15 years), being married, having chronic disease, and those previously infected by COVID-19. HCWs reported a high prevalence of occupational stress and burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic. Establishing policies and guidelines, enhancing working conditions, and providing continuous psychological support and assurance to HCWs are recommended to improve their resilience and increase their coping capacities toward pandemics.

Background and Aims: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine the effect of Ramadan intermittent fasting on appetite-regulating hormones including leptin, ghrelin, insulin, gastrin, glucagon-like peptide-1, peptide YY, and cholecystokinin., Methods: We searched the MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and Web of Science databases to identify relevant research on appetite-regulating hormones during Ramadan intermittent fasting, published until the end of March 2024., Results: Data from 16 eligible studies comprising 664 participants (341, 51.4 % male) with a mean ± standard deviation age of 33.9 ± 10.8 years were included. The meta-analysis included 12 studies with complete leptin data, showing no significant effect of Ramadan intermittent fasting on leptin concentrations (standardised mean difference - SMD = -0.11 μg/mL, 95 % CI: -0.36 to 0.14). Analysis of three studies with complete ghrelin data demonstrated a significant increase in ghrelin concentrations following Ramadan intermittent fasting (SMD = 0.31 pg/mL, 95 % CI: 0.03 to 0.60). Six studies examining insulin concentrations pre- and post-fasting revealed no significant effect on insulin concentrations (SMD = -0.24 μU/mL, 95 % CI: -0.54 to 0.02). Similarly, analysis of three studies with complete gastrin data showed no significant effect of intermittent fasting on gastrin concentrations (SMD = 0.23 pg/mL, 95 % CI: -0.71 to 0.99)., Conclusion: Ramadan intermittent fasting significantly increases ghrelin concentrations while showing no significant effects on leptin, insulin, and gastrin. Background:  Patient satisfaction is a critical indicator of healthcare quality, including high-quality antenatal care (ANC), and it directly impacts care continuity and health outcomes. This study assessed the satisfaction levels of pregnant women with ANC services provided at primary healthcare centers (PHCs) within the Qassim Health Cluster, Saudi Arabia., Methods:  A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 646 pregnant women attending ANC services in the Qassim region. Participants completed a validated questionnaire assessing demographic characteristics, healthcare interactions, and satisfaction levels across various ANC service aspects, including waiting times, healthcare provider communication, and healthcare service quality. Statistical analyses, including Pearson's chi-squared tests, Fisher's exact tests, and regression analyses, were performed to identify predictors of satisfaction., Results:  The majority of participants (N=366, 90.6%) reported successfully booking their appointments, and 368 (91.1%) faced no challenges during the process. While 393 (97.3%) and 398 (98.5%) reported receiving weight and blood pressure measurements, respectively, only 312 (77.2%) were advised on diet, and 298 (73.8%) received explanations about alarming symptoms. Communication gaps were noted, with 71% (N=287) of participants indicating that physicians did not introduce themselves, and 307 (76%) reported that physicians did not disclose their specialties. Satisfaction levels were highest for maintaining privacy (273 (67.6%) highly satisfied) and healthcare staff attitudes (247 (61.1%) highly satisfied), with an overall satisfaction mean score of 4.31±0.869. Regression analyses identified healthcare service levels and years of marriage as significant predictors of satisfaction (p<0.05)., Conclusion:  While overall satisfaction with ANC services was high, areas such as physician communication and health education require improvement. Introduction: Self-medication (SM) with non-opioid analgesics (NOAs) has become increasingly prevalent, with individuals using over-the-counter medications to manage pain and other symptoms without professional guidance. While NOAs are generally considered safe when used appropriately, misuse or overuse can lead to adverse effects, including gastrointestinal issues, liver damage, and renal problems., Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, awareness, and attitudes regarding NOAs and their SM practices, including how these factors vary by demographic characteristics., Subject and Methods: This cross-sectional study utilized data from a sample of 475 students who were randomly selected among university students at the University of Hafr Albatin, Hafar Al-Batin, Saudi Arabia. The selected students completed the validated self-administered online questionnaires. The questionnaire includes socio-demographic characteristics (e.g., age, gender, marital status, etc.), the use of SM with analgesics, and 20 items to measure students' knowledge, awareness, and attitude regarding NOAs for SM., Results: All the students sampled responded to our survey representing a 100% response rate. Of the participants, more than half 296 (62.3%) were females, and about 289 (60.8%) were in the 18-to-21 years old age group. The prevalence of students who were using SM with analgesics was about 61.3% (N=291). More than half of the students (276, 58.1%) were regarded as having good knowledge about NOAs for SM; however, only 186 (39.2%) were considered to have a positive attitude about it. Parents' higher education, having health insurance, and current use of SM with analgesics were associated with increased knowledge and attitude. Interestingly, we noted a significant positive correlation between knowledge and attitude scores (p<0.001)., Conclusion: Despite students showing favorable knowledge of NOAs for SM, their attitude about it was less than desired. Students' knowledge and attitude regarding NOAs for SM increased significantly depending on their parents' education, monthly income, and health insurance. Further, this study highlights that students' knowledge was positively correlated with their attitude regarding non-opioid SM. This paper introduces a novel two-parameter G-family of distributions derived through a mixing approach, where a mixture of the exponentiated G-family with parameter α follows gamma distribution. Within this new family, we focus on the mixture of gamma-exponentiated exponential distribution (MGExED) as a key sub-model. The study thoroughly investigates by determining some of the MGExED statistical properties, such as quantile function, moments, and order statistics. The MGExED's parameters are estimated using different estimation methods. Due to the complexity of obtaining explicit forms for MGExED's estimators, the accuracy of these estimates is assessed through Monte Carlo simulations. To illustrate the practical utility of the MGExED, we apply it to two distinct real datasets, demonstrating its superior flexibility and fit compared to several established distributions in the literature. Skin infections considered as one of the predominant disorders that could greatly influence humans. Topical drug delivery is believed to be an effective substitute to systemically delivered medication for skin disorders management. Erythromycin has been proven to retain anti-bacterial activity. Based on that, the aim of existent study is to develop a proper nanocarrier, namely; nanoemulsion using tea tree oil including Erythromycin. Applying quality by design approach, the optimized nanoemulsion was selected based on number of independent variables namely; particle size and in vitro release study. Yet, in order to get appropriate topical application, the optimized nanoemulsion was combined with previously prepared hydrogel base to provide Erythromycin based nanoemulgel. The developed nanoemulgel was assessed for its organoleptic and physical characters to ensure its suitability for topical application. Stability study was implemented over three months after being kept in two distinct environments. Eventually, the antibacterial behavior of the preparation was investigated on MRSA to verify the expected antibacterial improvement and validate the effectiveness of the developed nanocarrier. The formulation showed consistent appearance, with pH (6.11 ± 0.19), viscosity (10400 ± 1275 cP), spreadability (54.03 ± 2.3 mm), extrudability (80.36 ± 3.15 g/cm 2 ) and drug content (99.3 ± 0.46 %) that seemed to be satisfied for topical application. It could provide 48.1 ± 4.2 % releases over 6 h in addition to be stable at room temperature and at refrigerator. Background The COVID-19 pandemic has led to various health challenges, including the disruption of people's sense of smell. Olfactory disorders have been reported as a lingering consequence of COVID-19, with diverse patterns of smell dysfunction experienced by patients. Objectives This study aimed to investigate the impact of persistent smell disorders on the quality of life of individuals who recovered from COVID-19 in Taif, Saudi Arabia. Methodology A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in Taif, Saudi Arabia, between October 2023 and January 2024. The study included adults with a history of PCR-confirmed COVID-19 infection in Taif city. Data were collected using a validated online survey employing a convenience sampling technique. Statistical analysis was carried out using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 26.0 (Released 2019; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States), and chi-squared tests were used to assess the relationships. Results The study included 429 participants. A total of 52.7% of the respondents reported a loss of smell after recovering from COVID-19, and 14.9% reported a persistent loss of their sense of smell. The most common types of smell disorders experienced were hyposmia, anosmia, and parosmia. The study revealed emotional distress, changes in eating habits, and social impact among participants with smell disorders. Conclusion This study highlights the high prevalence of persistent smell disorders among individuals who recovered from COVID-19 in Taif, Saudi Arabia. The findings emphasize the complex nature of these disorders and their impact on patients' quality of life. Game-based learning has gained popularity in recent years as a tool for enhancing learning outcomes in children. This approach uses games to teach various subjects and skills, promoting engagement, motivation, and fun. In early childhood education, game-based learning has the potential to promote cognitive, social, and emotional development. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to summarize the existing literature on the effectiveness of game-based learning in early childhood education This systematic review and meta-analysis examine the effectiveness of game-based learning in early childhood education. The results show that game-based learning has a moderate to large effect on cognitive, social, emotional, motivation, and engagement outcomes. The findings suggest that game-based learning can be a promising tool for early childhood educators to promote children's learning and development. However, further research is needed to address the remaining gaps in the literature. Background: Bedside teaching (BST) is a crucial component of medical education. It entails the interaction of students with patients in outpatient clinics and inpatient wards under the supervision of their tutors in order to improve the clinical skills of the students and, ultimately, patient outcomes. This teaching relies heavily on patients' willingness and cooperation. The aim of this study was to assess the perception of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) patients regarding the presence and participation of medical students in BST., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among OB/GYN patients at the outpatient clinics and inpatient wards at King Fahd Hospital of the University (KFHU) in Al-Khobar from January 1 to April 30, 2023. Data were collected online through the Google Drive survey tool using a validated and pilot tested questionnaire. Data were analyzed utilizing SPSS version 26.0. Chi-squared test was employed to test for association between two categorical variables. Multiple logistic regression model was used to determine variables associated with positive attitudes., Results: A total of 507 patients completed online questionnaire. A highly positive patients' attitude was observed toward the presence and participation of medical students during BST with a mean score of 81.8 ± 10.4. The acceptance rates were higher for female students compared to male students (91.9% vs 61.7%) and for senior doctors compared to junior doctors (89.9% vs 58.9%). Patients who came to the outpatient clinics were also more likely to accept students' presence than those who went to hospital wards. Age, marital status, and previous clinic visits were positively associated with the acceptance level of the presence and involvement of medical students in BST without a significant difference., Conclusion: In general, patients had a good perception of medical students' engagement in their care and that the gender of the medical students/doctors and clinical setting could affect this perception. Introduction  Dental surfaces have dense bacterial deposits, and poor oral hygiene can exacerbate bacterial infections, causing acute tonsillitis. The study aims to quantify acute tonsillitis prevalence and assess its association with oral hygiene practices. Methods  A descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to assess the prevalence of acute tonsillitis and its association with oral hygiene was conducted among adults aged 20 and above in Taif City, Saudi Arabia. Illiterates and those unwilling to participate were excluded. We employed an Arabic online self-administered questionnaire that was disseminated conveniently via Google Forms to social media assessing oral hygiene such as last dental visit, age at starting dental care, number of toothbrushes per day, frequency of toothbrush change, and duration of brushing teeth, and acute tonsillitis characteristics of the participants. Results About 393 participated in the study. Of them, 54% were aged 20-30, 53% were males, and 70% had a university education. The prevalence of acute tonsillitis was 64%. Approximately 28% reported dental clinic visits within three months, and 21% initiated oral hygiene practices at age 20. Among participants, 43% brushed twice daily, with 33% spending one minute and 43% two minutes. About 31% replaced toothbrushes every three months, while 23% acknowledged having bad breath. Experiencing bad breath, changing toothbrushes every three months, and having dental visits within less than three months were associated with having acute tonsillitis (p<0.05). However, regression analysis revealed that experiencing bad breath (OR: 2.11, 95% CI: 1.23, 3.70) was associated with a higher risk of acute tonsillitis, while less frequent toothbrush changes correlated with a lower risk (OR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.30, 0.94). Conclusion  This study revealed a substantial prevalence of acute tonsillitis among adults in Taif City. Oral care practices need improvement. There are significant associations between oral hygiene practices, bad breath, and the occurrence of acute tonsillitis. Introduction: The assessment of quality of life (QOL) after thyroidectomy has been a focus of medical research, aiming to understand its impact on patients' overall well-being and functional status. Studies have examined the physical, psychological, and social dimensions of QOL, providing valuable insights into the outcomes of thyroidectomy and improving patient care. The aim of the study is to evaluate the long-term impact of different aspects of patients' quality of life post-thyroidectomy., Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Taif City and included 100 participants post-thyroidectomy. Data were collected from medical records and telephone interviews using the modified Arabic version of the EROTC QLQ-H&N43 questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using R software version 4.2.2., Results: The majority of the 100 participants were female (76%), and most were over 50 years old (38%). The types of surgery performed included hemithyroidectomy (36%), subtotal thyroidectomy (6%), and total thyroidectomy (58%). Participants reported difficulties related to their senses, body satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, eating, speaking, and social interactions. Pain in the mouth and jaw, as well as swallowing difficulties, showed variations among the surgery groups. Other symptoms, such as tooth problems, dry mouth, and swelling in the neck, did not differ significantly among the groups. Numbness in the hands or feet was associated with a subtotal or total thyroidectomy. Difficulties with enjoying meals, eating in front of others, and communication issues showed variations among the surgery groups., Conclusion: This study provided insights into the QOL of thyroidectomy survivors in Taif City. Participants reported challenges related to sensory, body, and sexual issues, as well as difficulties with eating, speaking, and social interactions. The findings highlight the need for interventions and support to address these challenges and optimize the QOL of thyroidectomy patients. Background: Oseltamivir has been used as adjunctive therapy in the management of patients with COVID-19. However, the evidence about using oseltamivir in critically ill patients with severe COVID-19 remains scarce. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of oseltamivir in critically ill patients with COVID-19., Methods: This multicenter, retrospective cohort study includes critically ill adult patients with COVID-19 admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Patients were categorized into two groups based on oseltamivir use within 48 hours of ICU admission (Oseltamivir vs. Control). The primary endpoint was viral load clearance., Results: A total of 226 patients were matched into two groups based on their propensity score. The time to COVID-19 viral load clearance was shorter in patients who received oseltamivir (11 vs. 16 days, p = 0.042; beta coefficient: -0.84, 95%CI: (-1.33, 0.34), p = 0.0009). Mechanical ventilation (MV) duration was also shorter in patients who received oseltamivir (6.5 vs. 8.5 days, p = 0.02; beta coefficient: -0.27, 95% CI: [-0.55,0.02], P = 0.06). In addition, patients who received oseltamivir had lower odds of hospital/ventilator-acquired pneumonia (OR:0.49, 95% CI:(0.283,0.861), p = 0.01). Background: The association between COVID-19 and acute cerebrovascular disease (CVD) has not been explored extensively. New data has come to light which may change previous results., Methods: We queried the PubMed electronic database from its inception until February 2022 for studies evaluating the incidence of stroke in COVID-19 patients. Results of the analysis were pooled using a random-effects model and presented as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs)., Results: 37 studies consisting of 294,249 patients were included in our analysis. Pooled results show that the incidence of acute CVD events in COVID-19 positive patients is 2.6% (95% CI: 2.0-3.3; P<0.001). Cardioembolic (OR=14.15, 95% CI: 11.01 to 18.19, P<0.00001) and cryptogenic (OR=2.87, 95% CI: 1.91 to 4.32, P<0.00001) etiologies were associated with COVID-19 positivity. Risk factors for CVD events in patients with COVID-19 were atrial fibrillation (OR=2.60, 95% CI: 1.15 to 5.87, P=0.02), coronary artery disease (OR=2.24, 95% CI: 1.38 to 3.61, P=0.0010), diabetes (OR=2.46, 95% CI: 1.36 to 4.44, P=0.003) and hypertension (OR=3.65, 95% CI: 1.69 to 7.90, P=0.005)., Conclusion: COVID-19 infection is associated with an increased risk for acute CVD and is associated with cardioembolic and cryptogenic etiologies and the risk factors of atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease, diabetes and hypertension in COVID-19 positive patients., Competing Interests: Conflicts of interest None

Quantum dots (QDs) with ultrahigh surface-to-volume ratio, abundant edge active sites, forceful quantum confinement and other remarkable physio-chemical properties, have garnered considerable research interest. MXene QDs, as an emerging member of them, have also attracted wide attention in the last six years, and shown great achievements in many fields. This critical review systematically summarizes the various methods for synthesizing MXene QDs. The characteristics and corresponding applications of various MXene QDs are also presented. The advantages and disadvantages of various synthetic methods, and the limitations of corresponding MXene QDs are compared and highlighted. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of synthesizing MXene QDs are proposed. Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exams may cause patients to feel anxious before or during the scan, which affects the scanning outcome and leads to motion artifacts. Adequate preparation can effectively alleviate patients' anxiety before the scan. We aimed to assess the effect of different preparation methods on MRI-induced anxiety: We conducted a prospective randomized study on MRI patients between March and May 2022. We divided 30 patients into two groups: the control group, which received routine preparation (RP), and the experimental group, which received video preparation (VP). We used the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) to measure anxiety levels before and after the interventions. We assessed patients' self-satisfaction after the scan: After preparation, VP (STAI mean = 10.7500) and RP (STAI mean = 12.7857), we observed a significant association between the pre- and post-STAI results in VP ( p = 0.025). The effects of both methods in decreasing anxiety were more significant for first-timers ( p = 0.009 in RP/0.014 in VP). We noted high satisfaction levels for both forms of preparation. The VP technique was superior in reducing patient anxiety, especially in first-time MRI patients. Hence, VP techniques can be used in different clinical settings to reduce anxiety and facilitate patients' understanding of the instructions given.

Smartphones have made our lives easier and have become indispensable for everyday life; however, their uncontrolled and excessive use can trigger "smartphone addiction" (SA). SA is a rising public health issue, particularly among young people around the world. There is a dearth of empirical research about SA and its impacts on young adults, particularly in developing countries such as Bangladesh. This cross-sectional study is an attempt to fill this gap. The data were collected from 440 eligible young adults in Bangladesh using an online survey between July 2021 and February 2022. Study results revealed that 61.4% of the young adults were addicted to their smartphone. Logistic regression analysis showed that being male, aged ≤25, unemployed and living with a large family size (≥8) were the significant sociodemographic predictors of SA. Smartphone-addicted participants were more likely to be less physically active, suffer from insomnia, be overweight or obese and use their phones while driving, walking and eating. In addition, the SA group were more likely to have physical and mental well-being problems. This study brings to light significant implications for policy makers and indicates a need for an SA community awareness programme which aims to reduce SA at the societal level.

Ileosigmoid Knotting is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction which occurs as a consequence of ileum or sigmoid colon wrapping around the base of each other resulting in double closed-loop bowel obstruction. We report a case of a 52-year-old male who presented in the emergency department with sudden onset of abdominal pain and vomiting. On clinical examination, the abdomen was tender and distended. Abdominal lymphangiomas are an uncommon form of congenital lymphatic malformation. We describe a case of a six-year-old male child who presented to our hospital with pain in the abdomen after an alleged history of minor trauma to the abdomen. On per abdomen examination there was a visible mass that was cystic on palpation. Abdominal ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging showed large multiloculated, septated intra-abdominal cystic structures. The patient underwent sclerotherapy with doxycycline and resolved completely after one session without complications. Smartphone overuse and addiction is a growing concern worldwide. However, there are limited studies about smartphone addiction and its impacts on university students in Saudi Arabia. This qualitative study aimed to elicit students' and university staff's perspectives and experiences about smartphone overuse/addiction in Umm Al-Qura University (UQU), Saudi Arabia. Fifteen undergraduate students and 18 university staff (13 lecturers and five professionals) were recruited for the purpose of this study. The study data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. The qualitative data comprising 33 participants (students and staff) identified four major themes including the perception of smartphone use; causes of smartphone overuse; negative impacts of smartphone overuse; and strategies to reduce the overuse of smartphone. The overall findings confirmed that students and staff alike held both positive and negative perceptions about using a smartphone. Potential factors leading to smartphone overuse included personal factors (extended free time and low self-confidence, irresponsibility/escaping certain social gatherings/passing the time); smartphone factors (reasonable price, attractive advertisements (ads), and engaging smartphone Apps); and social factors (social pressure and fear of losing a connection). The main negative impacts of smartphone overuse were found to be related to low academic productivity, poor physical health (body pain, lack of sleep, and low exercise), compromised mental well-being (stress and negative emotions), and decreased socialisation (social isolation and a reduction in face-to-face communication). Our findings suggested that awareness campaigns about smartphone overuse, promoting family and social events, encouraging physical activities, and limiting internet use can reduce smartphone usage among university students. This finding has significant implications for decision-makers.

Background: The Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) has become the gold standard for evaluating different domains in Parkinson's disease (PD), and it is commonly used in clinical practice, research, and clinical trials., Objectives: The objectives are to validate the Arabic-translated version of the MDS-UPDRS and to assess its factor structure compared with the English version., Methods: The study was carried out in three phases: first, the English version of the MDS-UPDRS was translated into Arabic and subsequently back-translated into English by independent translation team; second, cognitive pretesting of selected items was performed; third, the Arabic version was tested in over 400 native Arabic-speaking PD patients. The psychometric properties of the translated version were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) as well as exploratory factor analysis (EFA)., Results: The factor structure of the Arabic version was consistent with that of the English version based on the high CFIs for all four parts of the MDS-UPDRS in the CFA (CFI ≥0.90), confirming its suitability for use in Arabic., Conclusions: The Arabic version of the MDS-UPDRS has good construct validity in Arabic-speaking patients with PD and has been thereby designated as an official MDS-UPDRS version. Smartphone use can lead to smartphone addiction, which is a growing concern worldwide. However, there are limited studies about smartphone addiction and its impacts on university students in Saudi Arabia. This study aims to fill this gap. This is a quantitative study conducted among undergraduate students in Umm Al-Qura University (UQU), Saudi Arabia from May 2019 and February 2021. Study data were collected using both online and hard copy administered surveys. A self-administered questionnaire, Grade point average, Smartphone Addiction Short Version, and Kessler Psychological Distress scales were used to assess the outcomes. A total of 545 undergraduate students, mostly females, aged ≤ 21 years old and lived with large family sizes. More than half owned a smartphone for 5-8 years and the majority used their smartphone on average 6-11 h per day for social networking (82.6%), entertainment (66.2%) and web surfing (59.6%). Most of the participants were smartphone-addicted (67.0%). Logistic regression analysis showed that age ≤ 21, not gainfully employed, small family size and high family income were the main significant socio-demographic predictors of smartphone addiction. Smartphone-addicted participants were more likely to: have lower academic performance (GPA); be physically inactive; have poor sleep; be overweight/obese; have pain in their shoulder (39.2%), eyes (62.2%) and neck (67.7%) and have a serious mental illness (30.7%). This finding has significant implications for decision makers and suggests that smartphone education focusing on the physical and mental health consequences of smartphone addiction among university students can be beneficial.

Background: Smartphones play a critical role in increasing human-machine interactions, with many advantages. However, the growing popularity of smartphone use has led to smartphone overuse and addiction. This review aims to systematically investigate the impact of smartphone addiction on health outcomes., Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used to carry out the systematic review. Five electronic databases including Medline, Web of Science, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Scopus were searched to identify eligible studies. Eligible studies were screened against predetermined inclusion criteria and data were extracted according to the review questions. This review is registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020181404). The quality of the articles was assessed using the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies., Results: A total of 27 of 2550 articles met the inclusion criteria. All of the studies were cross-sectional and focused on physical, mental, and neurological health outcomes. The majority of the studies focused on mental health outcomes and consistent associations were observed between smartphone addiction and several mental health outcomes. Anxiety and depression were commonly found to mediate mental health problems. A wide range of physical health sequelae was also associated with smartphone addiction. Furthermore, there was an association between smartphone addiction and neurological disorders., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that there are consistent associations between smartphone addiction and physical and mental health, especially mental health. Social awareness campaigns about smartphone addiction and its impact on physical and mental health are needed. Further studies, especially randomized controlled trials, are warranted to validate the impacts of smartphone addiction.

Objectives: To assess the quality of life (QoL) in patients with vitiligo in central Saudi Arabia using the dermatology life quality index (DLQI)., Methods: A cross-sectional study spanning over 6 months was conducted on 253 adult patients with vitiligo at the outpatient dermatology clinics of the National Center of Vitiligo (Light Clinics) and King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The patients were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire using an Arabic version of the DLQI to measure the impact of vitiligo on their QoL. The association between the demographic and diseases characteristic to the median DLQI scores was investigated using binary logistic regression., Results: The median DLQI score was 4, the range 25, min 0 - max 25 and percentiles 2-8. The unadjusted odds ratio (95%CI) showed the median DLQI score was significantly higher in married subjects 2.29 (1.33-3.94) ( p <0.01), non-segmental vitiligo 2.10 (1.16-3.79) ( p <0.01), and the progressive vitiligo 1.87 (1.09-3.18) ( p <0.02) than their counterparts. However, after adjustment only married status predicted the high DLQI score 2.08 (1.11-3.61) ( p <0.01)., Conclusion: The QoL in vitiligo patients in Saudi Arabia is adverse than those with lighter skin, in other countries. Objective: This report describes a 45-year-old man who developed serotonin syndrome on day 13 of linezolid therapy. This is unusual as it typically appears within 24 hours of linezolid initiation., Methods: The patient did not receive any serotonergic agents concurrently with linezolid; maprotiline and mirtazapine were stopped 17 days before the development of serotonin syndrome. On day 13 of linezolid administration, the patient exhibited diaphoresis, fever, confusion, agitation, disorientation, anxiety, and restlessness. His blood pressure was elevated with persistent tachycardia. He was then diagnosed with serotonin syndrome using the Hunter criteria., Results: Linezolid was discontinued and supportive measures were initiated, which resulted in the complete resolution of the syndrome., Conclusions: This case report highlights that linezolid-induced serotonin syndrome can occur late in the course of therapy and the importance of the serotonergic agent washout period before the introduction of linezolid. Background: The portion of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) existent anterior to the mental foramen, before parting the canal, is referred to as the anterior loop (AL) of the IAN. The presence of AL is important when placing the implant interforaminal area of the mandible. These anatomical discrepancies can be assessed by cone-beam CT (CBCT), for evaluating its position and exact location. The AL is classified into Types I, II and III. In Type I, Y-shaped anatomy; in Type II, anatomy is T-shaped; and in Type III, Y-shaped anatomy is seen, and the incisive branch is thicker as compared to the main branch., Aim: In this study, we aim to analyse the prevalence of different types of AL of the IAN in Saudi sample population., Materials and Methods: The present study is a retrospective analysis of 149 (86 female & 63 male) CBCT images of patients records from 2018 June to 2018 September in the department of implant dentistry, KSMC, Riyadh. The age range of the patients who participated in the study was 30-60 years. The mean age of female participants is 42.5 ± 5.8, for the male participants is 48.6 ± 11.4 years respectively., Results: The most frequent type of AL of mental nerve noticed on the right side was of type I (59.1%), followed by type II (27.5%) and type III (13.4%). The most frequent type of AL of mental nerve noticed on the left side was type I (61.7%), followed by type II (26.8%) and type III (11.4%)., Conclusion: The results of the study encourage the usage of CBCT for planning implant treatment. Primary cardiac leiomyosarcoma has an extremely low incidence with overall median survival of approximately 6 months. Here, We report the case of a 60-year-old man who underwent complete surgical excision of right atrial mass. Histologic examination revealed leiomyosarcoma. The patient made a full recovery with no evidence of recurrence at 24 months. Purpose: This survey aimed to investigate quality of communicating design features for the construction of cobalt chromium removable partial dentures (RPDs) among dentists in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia., Materials and Methods: A survey of nine commercial dental laboratories located in Riyadh was carried out. In each visit, master casts for cobalt chromium RPDs and dentists' prescriptions were examined. A quality score for the provided instructions was developed and ranged from 0 to 4. A zero score means that no instructions were sent from the dentist for the design of the RPD. A score of 4 means that instructions were provided for the design of four main elements of the RPD, i.e., shape of major connector, type of direct retainers, position of direct retainers, position of dental rests., Results: 162 dentists' prescriptions for RPDs and related casts were assessed. The majority of RPD cases were designed by the dental technician alone (64.2%). Shape of the major connector was the most frequent element in dentists' prescriptions (35.8%). The mean quality score of dentists' instructions was 0.96 (sd=1.54). 18% of the provided instructions achieved quality score equal to 4. Prescriptions for Kennedy Class III cases achieved significantly higher mean quality score compared to Kennedy Class II cases (p<0.05). 16.7% of the evaluated casts had clearly defined rest seat preparation., Conclusion: The results of this survey indicate inadequate quality of communicating the design features of cobalt chromium RPDs among practicing dentists in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. We report a case of a 31-year-old female patient with high-risk neuroblastoma (NBL) who presented with a history of static back pain and bilateral lower limb weakness for almost a month. Her primary tumor was located in the right paraspinal region, causing spinal cord compression (SCC). Chemotherapy was administered with an immediate clinical improvement noted after 24 hours of starting treatment. Objectives: To identify pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) delayed inpatient diagnosis duration and contributing factors in an academic center in Saudi Arabia (SA)., Methods: Retrospective review of all culture-confirmed PTB cases between May 2015 and April 2019. The outcomes were the timing between admission and suspicion of PTB or isolation to either: early group (within 24 hours of admission) and late group (24 hours after admission). Results: Forty-nine cases were included with a median age of 49 years; a third of them were above 65 years of age. Most patients were of Saudi nationality and male. Approximately 38% of the cases were in the delayed group, half of them were smear-positive, with an average delay of 5.5 days. This was significant with: age above 65 years (odds ratio [OR]=8.93, 95% confidence interval [CI]=2.22-35.95) presence of non-respiratory symptoms (OR=5.6, 95% CI=1.56-19.98), malignancy (OR=13.38, 95% CI=1.46-122.71), chronic medical problems (OR=4.90, 95% CI=1.31-18.32), missed chest x-ray findings (OR= 48, 95% CI=8.63-266.88) or procalcitonin level above 0.5 ng/mL (OR=12, 95% CI=1.58-91.08)., Conclusion: Physicians in SA need to have a low threshold for PTB consideration in elderly patients or those with a history of malignancy. A careful review of the initial chest x-ray might help to overcome missing cases of PTB.

Objectives: To assess the mass casualty incident (MCI) preparedness of pre-hospital care providers in Saudi Arabia and to identify and highlight their strengths and weaknesses when responding to MCIs.  Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive quantitative analysis was conducted between January 2017 and 2018 and included all Saudi Red Crescent Authority (SRCA) general administration branches in 13 regions in Saudi Arabia. The modified version of the emergency medical specialists (EMS) incident response and readiness assessment (EIRRA) tool was used in this study. Results: The Makkah region has the largest number of ambulances and medics vehicles, followed by Riyadh. Makkah and Al Madinah Al Munawarah obtained a median score of 4 and showed substantial preparedness for MCIs. However, Al Madinah Al Munawarah showed higher level of MCI preparedness than Makkah, and a significant difference was found (p=0.019). By contrast, Riyadh and the Eastern region showed limited MCI preparedness. In addition, a moderate positive correlation was observed between the overall median scores and the number of physicians (r=0.656 and p=0.015). Conclusion: The SRCA showed substantial preparedness in Makkah and Al Madinah Al Munawarah. The SRCA were highly prepared to face MCIs.

Background: Approximately, 80% of the many cases of the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) confirmed worldwide were diagnosed in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The risk of the disease spreading internationally is especially worrying given the role of KSA as the home of the most important Islamic pilgrimage sites. This means the need to assess Arab pilgrims' awareness of MERS-CoV is of paramount importance., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out during Ramadan 2015 in the Holy Mosque in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to 417 Arab participants at King Fahad Extension, King Abdullah Prayer Extension and, King Abdullah Piazza Extension after Taraweeh and Fajr prayers., Results: The mean MERS-CoV knowledge score was 52.56. Majority of the respondents (91.3%) were familiar with MERS-CoV. Saudis had significantly higher knowledge of MERS-CoV than non-Saudis (56.92 ± 18.55 vs. 44.91 ± 25.46, p = 0.001). Females had significantly more knowledge about consanguineous MERS-CoV than males (55.82 ± 19.35 vs. 49.93 ± 23.66, p = 0.006). The average knowledge was significantly higher in respondents who had received health advice on MERS-CoV (56.08 ± 20.86 vs. 50.65 ± 22.51, p = 0.024). With respect to stepwise linear regression, knowledge of MERS-CoV tended to increase by 14.23 (B = 14.23%, p = 0.001) in participants who were familiar with MERS-CoV, and by 8.50 (B = 8.50, p = 0.001) in those who perceived MERS-CoV as a very serious disease., Conclusion: There is a great need for educational programs to increase awareness about MERS-CoV., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest.

Objectives: To assess health care services provided to type 1 and type 2 diabetic patients and diabetes health care expenditure in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA)., Methods: This study was part of a nationwide, household, population based cross-sectional survey conducted at the University Diabetes Center, College of Medicine, King Saud University, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia between January 2007 and December 2009 covering 13 administrative regions of the Kingdom. Using patients' interview questionnaires, health care services data were collected by trained staff., Results: A total of 5,983 diabetic patients were chosen to assess health care services and expenditure. Approximately 92.2% of health services were governmental and the remaining 7.8% were in private services. The mean annual number of visits to physicians was 6.5±3.9 and laboratories was 5.1±3.9. Diabetic patients required one admission every 3 years with a mean admission duration of 13.3±28.3 days. General practitioners managed 85.9% of diabetic cases alone, or shared with internists and/or endocrinologists. Health care expenditure was governmental in 90% of cases, while it was personal in 7.7% or based on insurance payment in 2.3%., Conclusion: Health services and its expenditure provided to diabetic citizens in Saudi Arabia are mainly governmental. Empowerment of the role of both the private sector and health insurance system is badly needed, aside from implementing proper management guidelines to deliver good services at different levels.

Background: Saudi Arabia is a community thrilled by sudden social and economical changes, leading to a sharp increase in the prevalence of abnormal glucose metabolism. Age-specific diabetes and impaired fasting glucose prevalence is the focus of this study with the expected risk factors., Methods: A nationwide, household, randomized, population based cohort of 18 034 participants aged ≥30 years was selected to test for abnormal glucose metabolism using fasting plasma glucose (FPG) according to American Diabetes Association (ADA) criteria., Results: The prevalence of diabetes was 25.4% with 40.3% being unaware of their disease, while impaired fasting glucose (IFG) affected 25.5% of the total sample. IFG to diabetes ratio was one in this study, decreasing with age and increasing with body weight. Age ≥45 years, hypertension, history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and high triglycerides are the strongest risk factors in diabetic patients, while history of GDM, dyslipidemia, obesity, and high triglycerides are the most significant risk factors in IFG participants., Conclusions: Abnormal glucose metabolism has reached an epidemic level in this society, where half of adults and older are affected. Purpose: To assess diabetic retinopathy prevalence and its risk factors in a society with type 2 diabetes epidemic using the Saudi National Diabetes Registry (SNDR)., Method: This is a cross-sectional study using patient's clinical data found in SNDR data base. A cohort of 50,464 Saudi patients with type 2 diabetes aged ≥25 years were selected to assess for the prevalence and risk factors for diabetic retinopathy., Results: The overall prevalence of diabetic retinopathy is 19.7%, where 9.1% have non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), 10.6% have proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and 5.7% have macular oedema (ME). Duration of diabetes and age are the most significant risk factors for diabetic retinopathy with odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 8.88 (8.30-9.50) and 5.76 (5.10-6.55), respectively. Nephropathy, neuropathy, insulin use, poor glycemic control, hypertension and male gender significantly increased the risk for diabetic retinopathy. Smoking, hyperlipidemia and obesity significantly reduced the risk for diabetic retinopathy among type 2 Saudi diabetic cohort., Conclusion: vThe low prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in our registry may be a result of the shortage or absence of well-structured screening programmes. Therefore, many patients with NPDR might have been missed. Objective: The present study is undertaken to evaluate the magnitude of DKA in Saudi population with specific emphasis on clinical laboratory characteristics over 20 years., Material and Methods: A prospective analysis of hospital records of 240 episodes of DKA requiring inpatient admission from December 1985 to December 2005 in adult patients in a tertiary hospital was performed. Besides the demographic data of the patients, the clinico-laboratory parameters relevant to the diabetes and DKA status were thoroughly reviewed., Results: 150 males and 90 females were admitted with DKA with a mean age of 21.77 +/- 7.2 years. 16.6% (n=40) were diagnosed to have DM for the first time and others had a mean duration of DM of 5.02 +/- 4.88 years with an average daily insulin requirement being 45.09 +/- 23.9 units. 80.4% of the DKA episodes occurred in intermediate, secondary school and University level students. The commonest precipitating factors were missed insulin doses (51.2%) and respiratory tract infections (22.5%). The mean duration of stay in the hospital was 6.56 +/- 3.4 days and there were no deaths reported because of DKA. The mean blood sugar on presentation was 23.49 +/- 8.3 mmol/L whereas the mean pH and bicarbonate levels on presentation were 7.21 +/- 0.1 and 14.7 +/- 4.3 meq/L respectively. Blood pH was found to be significantly lower in female patients. Among patients below 20 years of age, females have significantly lower bicarbonate levels (11.7 +/- 6.2). Among patients above 20 years of age females had significantly longer duration of diabetes (8.86 +/- 8.36 years; p < 0.04)., Conclusions: By providing intensive education and increasing the awareness of DKA, a major reduction in morbidity and hospitalizations due to DKA may be expected.
