OBJECTIVE: ADHD is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity. Impairments in executive functioning (EF) are central to models of ADHD, while alpha-band spectral power event-related decreases (ERD) have emerged as a putative electroencephalography (EEG) biomarker of EF in ADHD. Little is known about the roles of EF and alpha ERD and their interactions with symptoms of ADHD. METHOD: We estimated network models of ADHD symptoms and integrated alpha ERD measures into the symptom network. RESULTS: EF emerges as a bridge network node connecting alpha ERD and the hyperactivity/impulsivity and inattention symptoms. We found that EF most closely relates to a subset of symptoms, namely the motoric symptoms, seat (difficulty staying seated), and runs (running or climbing excessively). CONCLUSIONS: EF functions as a bridge node connecting alpha ERD and the ADHD symptom network. Motoric-type symptoms and EF deficits may constitute important nodes in the interplay between behavior/symptoms, cognition, and neurophysiological markers of ADHD.

Perception is a probabilistic process dependent on external stimulus properties and ones internal state. However, which internal states influence perception and via what mechanisms remain debated. We studied how spontaneous alpha-band activity (8-13 Hz) and pupil fluctuations impact visual detection and confidence across stimulus contrast levels (i.e., the contrast response function, CRF). In human subjects of both sexes, we found that low prestimulus alpha power induced an additive shift in the CRF, whereby stimuli were reported present more frequently at all contrast levels, including contrast of zero (i.e., false alarms). Conversely, prestimulus pupil size had a multiplicative effect on detection such that stimuli occurring during large pupil states (putatively corresponding to higher arousal) were perceived more frequently as contrast increased. Signal detection modeling reveals that alpha power changes detection criteria equally across the CRF but not detection sensitivity (d), whereas pupil-linked arousal modulated sensitivity, particularly for higher contrasts. Interestingly, pupil size and alpha power were positively correlated, meaning that some of the effect of alpha on detection may be mediated by pupil fluctuations. However, pupil-independent alpha still induced an additive shift in the CRF corresponding to a criterion effect. Our data imply that low alpha boosts detection and confidence by an additive factor, rather than by a multiplicative scaling of contrast responses, a profile which captures the effect of pupil-linked arousal. We suggest that alpha power and arousal fluctuations have dissociable effects on behavior. Alpha reflects the baseline level of visual excitability, which can vary independent of arousal.

Quantification of gross alpha and beta-emitting radionuclides in drinking water helps to understand the water quality as well as the long-term exposures to human health. The gross alpha and beta activity concentrations have been measured in 35 tap water samples taken from different residential areas of Dhaka city in the year 2020–2021. The measurement was performed using a dual phosphor Zinc Sulphide Scintillation Detector, ZnS(Ag). The activity of gross alpha of the collected tap water samples ranged from 0.45 ± 0.04 to 16.53 ± 0.01 mBq/L with an average value of 7.22 ± 0.43 mBq/L, which is below the WHO recommended limit of 0.5 Bq/L (WHO, 2011) or 0.1 Bq/L (WHO, 1978). Furthermore, the activity of gross beta in the tap water samples ranged from 3.26 ± 1.25 to 57.99 ± 1.98 mBq/L (mean 30.78 ± 1mBq/L) which is below the WHO recommended limit of 1 Bq/L (WHO, 2011). The total annual equivalent dose due to tap water was found below the WHO recommended dose limit of 100 µSv/y due to radionuclides in water. Present results may help to create baseline data for gross alpha and beta activity in drinkable water in Bangladesh and also for further analysis in identifying specific radionuclides. In this study, the activity concentrations of gross alpha and gross beta in 125 drinking water samples (16 tap and 109 spring waters) collected from Ankara province were measured using a gas proportional α/β counter. The average (range) activity concentrations of gross alpha and gross beta were determined as 105 (20–495) mBqL−1 and 195 (70–850) mBqL−1, respectively. Average annual effective dose to adults caused by ingestion of water samples was estimated as 74.1 ± 43.2 µSv y−1. The average estimated cancer risk value depending on irradiations was calculated as 3.8 × 10−4 and 2.6 × 10−4 for the region using the nominal probability coefficients recommended by ICRP 60 and ICRP 103, respectively. Annual effective dose values in 10.4% of samples exceeded the limit values suggested by WHO for drinking waters in terms of beta activity and this was 0.8% for alpha activity. The increasing frequency of vehicle accidents presents a significant challenge in our society. Unsafe behaviors, such as distracted driving (e.g., eating, texting, and talking on the phone), as well as fatigue, medication use, and driving under the influence, contribute to this rise. Drowsiness is a particularly concerning risk factor. This study proposes an automated driver drowsiness detection and warning system based on the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. By analyzing EEG signals to measure the relative power ratio of alpha and beta waves, the system was validated using the renowned MIT-BIH polysomnographic database, which focuses on drowsiness research. Evaluation of the system demonstrates an average accuracy of 99 , 87 % , achieving real-time detection in 1072 , 590 ms, a recall of 99 , 77 % , and a false negative rate of 0 , 22 % . These results highlight the precision and reliability of the proposed system, with an overall F-score of 99 , 88 % . AbstractThis study examined the effects of two locomotion methods (joystick and teleportation) and two postures (sitting and standing) on mental workload (MWL) in virtual reality (VR). Sixty participants played a VR game using a 2 × 2 experimental design, with assessments including Electroencephalography (alpha and theta bands), Electrocardiography (heart rate and heart-rate variability indices), and the NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX). The results showed lower theta activities and higher alpha activities in the joystick condition, indicating higher MWL in the teleportation condition, primarily due to time demand and effort. Sitting posture resulted in lower mental load and higher heart rate with increased Standard Deviation of Normal-to-Normal intervals (SDNN) compared to standing, suggesting higher MWL in the standing posture. The NASA-TLX highlighted physical demand, effort, and time demand as crucial factors in MWL related to posture. These findings provide a basis for developing human factors and ergonomics (HF/E) guidelines for VR, emphasizing the importance of locomotion methods and user posture in reducing mental workload. Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized-clinical trials aims to analyze the effect of interventions incorporating surface neurofeedback techniques on self-perceived sleep quality and insomnia in patients with or without sleep disturbances. Methods: The review was completed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement and was deposited in the Prospero international prospective registry of systematic reviews (CRD42024528401). Seven clinical trials with different main outcomes but with pre-post intervention records of self-perceived sleep quality or insomnia symptoms assessed by questionnaires met our inclusion criteria, including a publication date within the last 10 years. Five trials investigated sleep quality through scores on the Pittsburgh sleep quality Index (PSQI) and three trials signs of insomnia severity assessed with validated scales. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing the risk of bias and showed a high quality of them. Results: A total of 5 studies that evaluated sleep quality with the PSQI total score were included in the meta-analysis. The results revealed that control conditions succeeded in improving PSQI-assessed sleep quality more than the analyzed Neurofeedback interventions (PSQI total score 0.57; 95% CI 0.13 to 1.01; p = 0.01). On the other hand, a total of 3 studies that evaluated insomnia severity with various insomnia scales were included in the meta-analysis The results revealed that neither the NF interventions nor the control conditions show a favorable outcome relative to each other (−0.13; 95% CI −0.44 to 0.18; p = 0.41). Conclusion: The interventions studied mostly apply a neurofeedback training protocol based on maintaining alpha waves in a range between 8 and 12 Hz, with electrode positioning in the frontal area or in the sensorimotor cortex and with a number of neurofeedback sessions ranging from 8 to 20 sessions. The meta-analysis showed that interventions incorporating surface neurofeedback do not produce additional benefits in self-perception of sleep quality or insomnia compared to a wide variety of control conditions including cognitive behavioral treatment or other biofeedback modalities. When the eye uses the brain and heart, the cardiovascular and nervous systems integrate and interact. Because changes in retinal microcirculation are independent predictors of cardiovascular events, the eye serves as a "display" to the cardiovascular system and brain. The eye, which has two circulatory systems and a rich vascular supply, is a prime candidate for this study and benefits from early damage to the target organ. Eye movements performed during the visual search pose a challenge in identifying critical points in the eye scene. Because it uses different brain pathways and relates to the cardiac cycle, humans' ability to spot anomalies under challenging circumstances means they are always needed for visual search. ECG (electrocardiogram), electroencephalogram (EEG), and eye tracking can improve visual search training and attention-tracking performance. EEG data can also be analyzed in real time using eye-tracking technology. Previous work has discussed the EEG or ECG concerning attraction during visual search. The eyeball's movement combined with the ECG in the previous investigation and introduced large electroencephalographic (EEG) artifacts. This assessment aims to (a) identify brain–heart coherent features influenced by the visual search task and (b) discover the behavior of EEG frequency bands and heart rate variability (HRV) features. EEG and ECG were used to analyze and predict inattention in individuals during a visual search task. The EEG determines human brain function and considers to detect the variability in the EEG frequency band. The work proposed a visual search task with EEG and ECG analysis. Five participants recorded EEG and ECG recordings in three different scenarios: rest, gaze tracking, and normal. Statistical evaluation was used to compare EEG and ECG characteristics and Pearson's correlation was employed for statistical analysis. Statistical ANOVA analysis revealed statistically significant (p > 0.05) differences between theta (F3) and alpha (F3) EEG and ECG features, as well as between theta (F4) and alpha (F4) EEG and ECG features. Additionally, alpha (F3) and theta (F3) were significant in the heart rate variability index (rMSSD), which monitored activity under eye tracking. There was also a significant difference between alpha (F3) and mean HR. Pearson's correlation between ECG and EEG shows that theta (O1) and alpha (O1) correlate with LF/HF and alpha (F3) and theta (F3) with rMSSD. Theta (F3) and mean heart rate were also correlated. Observing the above ECG and EEG characteristics can improve and control treatment options for conditions like neurovascular instability (NCVI), characterized by age-related changes in blood pressure and increased cerebral and cardiac leukoaraiosis. This study investigates the proposed mechanism of mindfulness, its impact on body awareness and interoception, and its potential benefits for mental and physical health. Using psychophysical assessments, we compared 31 expert meditators with 33 matched controls (non‐meditators who engage in regular reading, more than 5 h per week) in terms of somatosensory accuracy with a somatosensory signal detection task (SSDT) and interoceptive sensibility via self‐report measures. We hypothesized that meditators would demonstrate superior somatosensory accuracy, indicative of heightened body awareness, potentially linked to increased alpha modulation in the somatosensory cortex, as observed via electroencephalography (EEG). In the SSDT, participants attempted to detect near‐threshold tactile stimuli presented with a non‐informative light in half of the trials. Contrary to our expectations, the findings showed that meditators had a lower decision threshold rather than higher accuracy. EEG results corroborated earlier research, indicating reduced prestimulus alpha power in meditators, suggesting enhanced alpha modulation. Furthermore, a trial‐by‐trial analysis revealed a negative correlation between prestimulus alpha activity and tactile perception. Compared to controls, meditators also reported greater interoceptive sensibility, less emotional suppression, and fewer difficulties in describing feelings. These findings may imply that enhanced tactile perception is associated with lower prestimulus alpha activity by reducing sensory filtering in the somatosensory cortex, thus increasing response rates without necessarily improving accuracy among meditators. The temporal resolution of adults' visual attention has been linked to the frequency of alpha-band oscillations in electroencephalogram (EEG) signal, with higher Peak Alpha Frequency (PAF) being associated with better visual temporal processing skills. However, relatively less is known about neural mechanisms underlying individual differences in the temporal resolution of visual attention in infancy. This study investigated the role of PAF in visual temporal processing in early infancy. In a sample of 6-month-old infants (n = 62) we examined the relationship between PAF extracted from resting-state EEG, and saccadic latencies in a predictive cueing task where the appearance of a reward was predicted by higher or lower frequency of two flickering objects. Results showed that higher PAF was associated with shorter saccadic latencies in a condition with higher differences between the two flickering frequencies, speaking for the involvement of PAF in visual temporal attention in early development. Additionally, we found that infants were generally faster to orient to the reward in trials where both peripheral stimuli were flickering at relatively lower frequencies, roughly corresponding to the theta frequency band. The electrical activity of the brain, characterized by its frequency components, reflects a complex interplay between periodic (oscillatory) and aperiodic components. These components are associated with various neurophysiological processes, such as the excitation-inhibition balance (aperiodic activity) or interregional communication (oscillatory activity). However, we do not fully understand whether these components are truly independent or if different neuromodulators affect them in different ways. The dopaminergic system has a critical role for cognition and motivation, being a potential modulator of these power spectrum components. To improve our understanding of these questions, we investigated the differential effects of this system on these components using electrocorticogram recordings in cats, which show clear oscillations and aperiodic 1/f activity. Specifically, we focused on the effects of haloperidol (a D2 receptor antagonist) on oscillatory and aperiodic dynamics during wakefulness and sleep. By parameterizing the power spectrum into these two components, our findings reveal a robust modulation of oscillatory activity by the D2 receptor across the brain. Surprisingly, aperiodic activity was not significantly affected and exhibited inconsistent changes across the brain. This suggests a nuanced interplay between neuromodulation and the distinct components of brain oscillations, providing insights into the selective regulation of oscillatory dynamics in awake states. This study investigates the effectiveness of a Low-Cost Single-Channel BCI system in improving mathematical learning outcomes, self-efficacy, and alpha power in university students. Eighty participants were randomly assigned to either a BCI group receiving real-time neurofeedback based on alpha rhythms or a sham feedback group. Results showed that the BCI group had significantly higher mathematical performance, self-efficacy, and alpha power compared to the sham feedback group. Mathematics performance, alpha wave intensity, and self-efficacy showed significant positive correlations after training, indicating that neurofeedback training may have promoted their interaction and integration. These findings demonstrate the potential of BCI technology in enhancing mathematical learning outcomes and highlight the importance of considering pre-test performance and self-efficacy in predicting learning outcomes, with implications for personalized learning interventions and the integration of BCI technology in educational settings. Alpha oscillations are associated with various psychiatric disorders, with many studies focusing on the prefrontal cortex, where transcranial alternating current stimulation (TACS) is applied in the alpha frequency band. This approach often involves selecting individualized alpha frequencies to resonate with their endogenous alpha oscillations. While strong alpha oscillations (8–13 Hz) are typically induced when the eyes are closed, they can also occur during the resting state with eyes open. However, it remains unclear whether these alpha oscillations share a common neural generation mechanism. Exploring which of these alpha oscillations is more suitable as a stable alpha peak frequency is a question of significant interest. Therefore, to systematically study this issue, we specifically collected resting-state electroencephalographic (EEG) data from the prefrontal region of 40 individuals, under both eyes-open and closed- eye conditions, with multiple follow-ups extending up to nine months. Through spectral analysis on each person's entire dataset and averaging the results, we observed a significant positive correlation between the alpha-band power in the eyes-open and the eyes-closed states, in terms of both absolute power and relative power. Further analysis revealed that this correlation was primarily contributed by the periodic activity within the alpha band. Upon modelling the oscillatory components, we discovered distinct differences in the oscillatory characteristics-such as number of the alpha sub-oscillations between the eyes-open state and the eyes-closed state. Our study is the first to systematically explored the relationship between alpha oscillations in the prefrontal cortex in the eyes-open and eyes-closed states, identifying both shared part of the neural generation mechanism and some distinct neural mechanisms that are unique to each state. Sleep deprivation (SD) has been shown to have a negative impact on alertness, as evidenced by behavioral and electroencephalographic studies. Nevertheless, in prior studies utilizing conventional fixed-bandwidth spectral analysis the aperiodic and periodic components were often confused, and some important periodic parameters (i.e., center frequency, bandwidth) were ignored. Here, based on a large open-access dataset of SD, we employed a standardized process for multiple-electrode analysis and group inference. We found that, compared to the healthy sleep control state (SC), the aperiodic offset shifted overall after SD, primarily in the occipital region. This shift was associated with a reduction in subjective alertness. Regarding periodic components, we did not find any power change in the alpha rhythm, but there was an increase in bandwidth of alpha within different regions distributed in the occipital and temporal lobes. These findings highlight the potential significance and value of aperiodic parameters in behavioral and electrophysiological research. Aperiodic offsets increase after deprivation, particularly in the occipital region, reflecting a decline in self-reported vigilance. Non‐invasive brain stimulation techniques offer therapeutic potential for neurological and psychiatric disorders. However, current methods are often limited in their stimulation depth. The novel transcranial temporal interference stimulation (tTIS) aims to overcome this limitation by non‐invasively targeting deeper brain regions. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of tTIS in modulating alpha activity during a mental rotation task. The effects of tTIS were compared with transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) and a sham control. Participants were randomly assigned to a tTIS, tACS, or sham group. They performed alternating blocks of resting and mental rotation tasks before, during, and after stimulation. During the stimulation blocks, participants received 20 min of stimulation adjusted to their individual alpha frequency (IAF). We assessed shifts in resting state alpha power, event‐related desynchronization (ERD) of alpha activity during mental rotation, as well as resulting improvements in behavioral performance. Our results indicate tTIS and tACS to be effective in modulating cortical alpha activity during mental rotation, leading to an increase in ERD from pre‐ to poststimulation as well as compared to sham stimulation. However, this increase in ERD was not correlated with enhanced mental rotation performance, and resting state alpha power remained unchanged. Our findings underscore the complex nature of tTIS and tACS efficacy, indicating that stimulation effects are more observable during active cognitive tasks, while their impacts are less pronounced on resting neuronal systems. Our study adds to the limited human research on the novel tTIS technique, which holds the potential for non‐invasive deep brain stimulation. We show that while tTIS and tACS can modulate cortical alpha activity during an active cognitive task, they do not improve behavioral performance or affect resting state alpha power. The alpha rhythm in human electroencephalography (EEG) is known to decrease in frequency with age. Previous study has shown that elderly individuals with dementia exhibit higher S values (spatial variability) and SD values (temporal variability) in the triple correlation of the occipital region (P3, P4, Oz) compared to healthy elderly individuals. The objective of this research is to examine changes in S and SD values of the alpha band with aging in healthy individuals using triple correlation values from the frontal region. The subjects were 50 healthy elderly subjects (mean age 73.0 ± 5.1 years), 34 healthy younger subjects (mean age 28.1 ± 4.6 years), and 21 dementia patients (mean age 70.1 ± 9.1 years). The methodology involved recording EEG for 5 min during rest with closed eyes, and then calculating S and SD values of the alpha band (8-13 Hz) using three electrodes in the frontal region (F3, F4, Fpz). The findings indicated that the S values of young individuals were significantly higher than those of elderly individuals (p < 0.01), whereas the SD values of young individuals tended to be lower than those of elderly individuals. The elevated S values in young individuals imply greater spatial variability akin to individuals with dementia, whereas the reduced SD values in young individuals suggest lower temporal variability unlike individuals with dementia. The discrepancy between the S value and SD value in healthy young individuals suggests that the normal cortical dipole in the frontal regions might be more abundant in them compared to healthy elderly individuals. Methods: For this, 72 late-adolescent (8–10-week-old) male Wistar rats received either ketamine only, at low (10 mg/kg), intermediate (20 mg/kg) or high (30 mg/kg) doses via intraperitoneal injection, or alcohol (2 mL/100 g) via oral gavage followed by ketamine (at low, intermediate, and high doses). Electroencephalograms (EEG) and electromyographic recordings were obtained 5 min after the final application of the drug. Results: When administered alone, ketamine resulted in an increase in delta, theta, beta, and gamma brainwaves, with a more pronounced effect being detected at the highest dose (30 mg/kg) in the case of the delta, beta, and gamma waves. The amplitude of the alpha brainwaves was reduced at all doses of ketamine, but less intensively at the highest dose. When administered alone, alcohol reduced all the brainwaves, with the reduction in the alpha waves being exacerbated by ketamine at all doses, and that of the theta and beta waves being boosted at the lowest dose. The intermediate dose of ketamine (20 mg/kg) reverted the alcohol-induced reduction in the theta and gamma waves, whereas the high dose increased delta, theta, beta, and gamma bandpower. Discussion: Overall, then, while ketamine enhances the depressant effects of alcohol on the alpha brainwave at all doses, a low dose intensified this effect on the theta and beta 175 waves, whereas a high dose produces neuronal hyperexcitability in the theta and 176 gamma bandpower. This study evaluates the levels of natural radioactivity in sediment and water samples from Lake Victoria in Jinja, Uganda, with a focus on the radionuclides potassium-40 (40 K), radium-226 (226Ra), and thorium-232 (232Th). We investigated four distinct zones around the lake: fishing (Zone A), farming (Zone B), domestic/livestock (Zone C), and a control zone (Zone D). A total of 15 sediment samples and 15 water samples were collected and analyzed. Sediment samples were obtained using a gravity corer, with a maximum penetration depth of 50 cm. 40 K ranged from 170.479 to 524.883 Bqkg−1 across all zones, 226Ra ranges from 1.51 to 56.78 Bqkg−1 across all zones, and 232Th ranges from 18.18 to 73.10 Bqkg−1 across all zones. 40 K concentrations were highest in the farming zone, likely due to the use of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) fertilizers. 226Ra and 232Th levels were also elevated in the farming zone, suggesting potential contributions from phosphate fertilizers. Absorbed dose rates varied across the zones, ranging from 28.33 to 58.17 nGyh-1. The measured absorbed dose rates across all zones were within the global average of 59 nGyh−1. The effective annual dose rate ranged from 0.35 to 0.91 mSvy−1 across all zones. Effective annual dose rates did not exceed the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) recommended limit of 1 mSv y−1, indicating low risks to public health from sediment radioactivity. The external index was below the safety threshold, suggesting minimal health risks. In water samples, gross alpha and beta activity concentrations were analyzed. Zone B had the highest average alpha activity concentration (0.64 BqL−1) and beta activity concentration (0.72 BqL−1), while Zone A had the lowest for both alpha (0.16 BqL−1) and beta (0.25 BqL−1) activity concentrations. Gross beta activity was generally higher than gross alpha activity, reflecting potential anthropogenic influences. Most water samples were within the UNSCEAR recommended limits for drinking water quality, except in areas affected by agricultural runoff. This study demonstrates that while the sediments of Lake Victoria in Jinja, Uganda, exhibit varying levels of naturally occurring radionuclides influenced by farming practices, the overall radiation exposure remains within safe limits. This brief report revisits the earliest known hyperscanning study published in 1965, which examined simultaneous EEG recordings of identical twins separated by six meters. The original study's findings suggested that eye closure in one twin elicited alpha activity in the other, despite physical separation. Leveraging contemporary signal processing techniques, we reanalyzed the digitized data to validate their findings. Spectral analysis confirmed alpha activity in the twins' EEG signals, aligning with the original observations. Multitapering along with background noise subtraction also revealed the alpha activity in the unrelated subject, which could not be observed by visual inspection alone. Coherence analysis revealed significant alpha band synchrony between a twin and an unrelated subject, differing from the initial study's conclusions. Our findings indicate that even historical data can yield new insights when revisited with contemporary data analysis tools and highlight the potential for future large-scale studies using advanced techniques to explore nonlocal brain interactions. Acquired drug resistance is a major challenge in the management of cancer, which underscores the need for discovery and development of novel therapeutic strategies. We report here the mechanism of the anti-cancer activity of a small coordinate complex composed of the rare earth metal praseodymium (Pr) and mercaptopyridine oxide (MPO; pyrithione). Exposure of cancer cells to relatively low concentrations of the conjugate Pr-MPO (5 µM) significantly impairs cell survival in a p53-independent manner and irrespective of the drug resistant phenotype. Mechanistically, Pr-MPO-induced cell death is caspase-independent, not inhibitable by necrostatin, but associated with the appearance of autophagy markers. However, further analysis revealed incomplete autophagic flux, thus suggesting altered integrity of lysosomal machinery. Supporting the lysosomal targeting activity are data demonstrating increased lysosomal Ca2+ accumulation and alkalinization, which coincides with cytosolic acidification (drop in pHc from 7.75 to 7.00). In parallel, an increase in lysosomal activity of glycosidase alpha acid (GAA), involved in passive glycogen breakdown, correlates with rapid depletion of glucose stores upon Pr-MPO treatment. This is associated with swift cataplerosis of TCA cycle intermediates, loss of NAD+/NADH and increase in pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) activity to compensate for pyruvate loss. Addition of exogenous pyruvate rescued cell survival. Notably, lysosomal impairment and metabolic catastrophe triggered by Pr-MPO are suggestive of Zn2+-mediated cytotoxicity, which is confirmed by the ability of Zn2+ chelator TPEN to block Pr-MPO-mediated anti-tumor activity. Together, these results highlight the ability of the small molecule lanthanide conjugate to target the cells' waste clearing machinery as well as mitochondrial metabolism for Zn2+-mediated execution of cancer cells, which could have therapeutic potential against cancers with high metabolic activity. Although significant progress has been made in understanding the cortical correlates underlying balance control, these studies focused on a single task, limiting the ability to generalize the findings. Different balance tasks may elicit cortical activations in the same regions but show different levels of activation because of distinct underlying mechanisms. In this study, twenty young, neurotypical adults were instructed to maintain standing balance while the standing support surface was either translated or rotated. The differences in cortical activations in the frontocentral region between these two widely used tasks were examined using electroencephalography (EEG). Additionally, the study investigated whether transcranial magnetic stimulation could modulate these cortical activations during the platform translation task. Higher delta and lower alpha relative power were found over the frontocentral region during the platform translation task when compared to the platform rotation task, suggesting greater engagement of attentional and sensory integration resources for the former. Continuous theta burst stimulation over the supplementary motor area significantly reduced delta activity in the frontocentral region but did not alter alpha activity during the platform translation task. The results provide a direct comparison of neural activations between two commonly used balance tasks and are expected to lay a strong foundation for designing neurointerventions for balance improvements with effects generalizable across multiple balance scenarios. When faced with danger, human beings respond with a repertoire of defensive behaviors, including freezing and active avoidance. Previous research has revealed a pattern of physiological responses, characterized by heart rate bradycardia, reduced visual exploration, and heightened sympathetic arousal in reaction to avoidable threats, suggesting a state of attentive immobility in humans. However, the electrocortical underpinnings of these behaviors remain largely unexplored. To investigate the visuocortical components of attentive immobility, we recorded parieto-occipital alpha activity, along with eye movements and autonomic responses, while participants awaited either an avoidable, inevitable, or no threat. To test the robustness and generalizability of our findings, we collected data from a total of 101 participants (76 females, 25 males) at two laboratories. Across sites, we observed an enhanced suppression of parieto-occipital alpha activity during avoidable threats, in contrast to inevitable or no threat trials, particularly toward the end of the trial that prompted avoidance responses. This response pattern coincided with heart rate bradycardia, centralization of gaze, and increased sympathetic arousal. Furthermore, our findings expand on previous research by revealing that the amount of alpha suppression, along with centralization of gaze, and heart rate changes predict the speed of motor responses. Collectively, these findings indicate that when individuals encounter avoidable threats, they enter a state of attentive immobility, which enhances perceptual processing and facilitates action preparation. The relationship between external feedback and cognitive and neurophysiological performance has been extensively investigated in social neuroscience. However, few studies have considered the role of positive and negative external social feedback on electroencephalographic (EEG) and moderate stress response. Twenty‐six healthy adults underwent a moderately stressful job interview consisting of a modified version of the Trier Social Stress Test. After each preparation, feedback was provided by an external committee, ranging from positive to negative with increasing impact on subjects. Stress response was measured by analysing response times (RTs) during the speech phase, while cognitive performance was assessed using a Stroop‐like task before and after the test. Results indicate that RTs used to deliver the final speeches with negative feedback were significantly lower compared with those used for the initial speech with positive feedback. Moreover, a generalized improvement in Stroop‐like task performance was observed in the post‐SST compared with the pre‐SST. Consistent with behavioural results, EEG data indicated greater delta, theta, and alpha band responses in right prefrontal and left central areas, and for delta and theta bands, also in parietal areas in response to positive feedback compared with aversive‐neutral feedback, highlighting greater cognitive effort required by the former. Conversely, an increase in these bands in right and left temporal and left occipital areas was observed following negative and aversive feedback, indicative of an adaptive response to stress and emotion‐regulatory processes. Featured Application: The assessment of stress in response to video content by examining levels of arousal and valence is a recent approach. A recommendation application can be developed to analyze brain signals, identifying video content that induces stress in the viewer. Upon detecting stress-inducing video content, the application should cease recommending such content to that viewer. The analysis of stress in response to videos using electroencephalography (EEG) has emerged as a significant field of research. In this study, we propose a methodology for classifying stress responses to videos using the Database for Emotion Analysis using Physiological Signals (DEAP). EEG signals are preprocessed with resampling and a median filter. We extracted Power Spectral Density (PSD) features from the alpha, beta, delta, and theta bands of the preprocessed EEG. Instances were labeled based on the valence and arousal values provided in the DEAP dataset in response to the presented videos. Four machine learning algorithms, namely Naïve Bayes (NB), Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Logistic Regression (LR), and Sequential Minimal Optimization (SMO) classifiers, were employed to differentiate between stressed and relaxed states using a 10-fold cross-validation technique. The SMO classifier achieved the highest accuracy of 95.65%. Additionally, statistically significant variations in the alpha band using t-tests suggest that the DEAP dataset video clips can effectively induce stress and relaxation conditions in participants. As evidence mounts that the cardiac-sympathetic nervous system reacts to challenging cognitive settings, we ask if these responses are epiphenomenal companions or if there is evidence suggesting a more intertwined role of this system with cognitive function. Healthy male and female human participants performed an approach-avoidance paradigm, trading off monetary reward for painful electric shock, while we recorded simultaneous electroencephalographic and cardiac-sympathetic signals. Participants were reward sensitive but also experienced approach-avoidance "conflict" when the subjective appeal of the reward was near equivalent to the revulsion of the cost. Drift-diffusion model parameters suggested that participants managed conflict in part by integrating larger volumes of evidence into choices (wider decision boundaries). Late alpha-band (neural) dynamics were consistent with widening decision boundaries serving to combat reward sensitivity and spread attention more fairly to all dimensions of available information. Independently, wider boundaries were also associated with cardiac "contractility" (an index of sympathetically mediated positive inotropy). We also saw evidence of conflict-specific "collaboration" between the neural and cardiac-sympathetic signals. In states of high conflict, the alignment (i.e., product) of alpha dynamics and contractility were associated with a further widening of the boundary, independent of either signal's singular association. Cross-trial coherence analyses provided additional evidence that the autonomic systems controlling cardiac-sympathetics might influence the assessment of information streams during conflict by disrupting or overriding reward processing. Athletes heavily rely on visual perception for performance. This study delves into electroencephalographic (EEG) brain activity among gymnastics, soccer, and esports athletes during resting states with eyes closed (REC) and open (REO) and compares differences in EEG alpha power from REC to REO (∆ EC-EO Alpha) across athlete groups. Forty-two female participants, including 14 from each athletic discipline, underwent two 5-minute EEG recordings, first during REC and then during REO conditions. Absolute EEG power was analyzed for delta (δ), theta (θ), alpha (α), and beta (β) frequency bands across various brain regions, and ∆ EC-EO Alpha values were computed. During REC, soccer players exhibited heightened α power at the midline frontopolar (Fpz) and β power at the midline occipital (Oz). Conversely, during REO, soccer players displayed increased δ power at Fpz and midline frontal (Fz) and reduced α power at the midline central (Cz) compared to gymnasts, along with elevated θ power at Fpz. Esports athletes demonstrated higher δ power and decreased α power at Fpz and Cz compared to gymnasts. Gymnasts exhibited distinct cortical activation patterns characterized by lower ∆ EC-EO Alpha at multiple electrode sites. These findings highlight sport-specific cortical activation patterns linked to visual attention among athletes. Background: The complicated mental illness known as borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by impulsivity, emotional instability, and interpersonal challenges. Measurement of brain electrical activity using electroencephalography (EEG) can yield helpful biomarkers for a range of psychiatric conditions. Objectives: The present study utilizes comprehensive EEG analysis to identify distinct neural patterns in BPD, providing insights and potential biomarkers for diagnosing and understanding BPD. Materials & Methods: In a cross-sectional study conducted on students of Guilan University (Iran), 534 students were evaluated through the Millon clinical multiaxial inventory from September 2018 to September 2020. Fourteen students were recruited into this case-control study: Seven students with BPD and seven healthy controls. EEG recording was performed by a standard 21-channel device. The EEG signals were processed with the EEGLAB toolbox in the MATLAB environment. The absolute and relative powers were calculated using the fast Fourier transform function. The power spectral density (PSD) and the coherence between different channels were evaluated, too. The statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism software. Results: The results showed a significant increase in the delta band range, mainly in the frontotemporal region, and a reduction in the power of the alpha band in students with BPD. The frontal brain region of BPD patients also showed reduced alpha band coherence. Conclusion: Students with BPD exhibit distinct EEG patterns, including increased delta band power and reduced alpha band power and coherence. Summary: Electroencephalograms can capture brain oscillatory activities during sleep as a form of electrophysiological signals. We analysed electroencephalogram recordings from full‐night in‐laboratory polysomnography from 100 patients with Down syndrome, and 100 age‐ and sex‐matched controls. The ages of patients with Down syndrome spanned 1 month to 31 years (median 4.4 years); 84 were younger than 12 years, and 54 were male. From each electroencephalogram, we extracted relative power in six frequency bands or rhythms (delta, theta, alpha, slow sigma, fast sigma, and beta) from six channels (frontal F3 and F4, central C3 and C4, and occipital O1 and O2) during five sleep stages (N3, N2, N1, R and W)—180 features in all. We examined differences in relative power between Down syndrome and control electroencephalograms for each feature separately. During wake and N1 sleep stages, alpha rhythms (8.0–10.5 Hz) had significantly lower power in patients with Down syndrome than controls. Moreover, the rate of increase in alpha power with age during rapid eye movement sleep was significantly slower in Down syndrome than control subjects. During wake and N1 sleep, delta rhythms (0.25–4.5 Hz) had higher power in patients with Down syndrome than controls. During N2 sleep, slow sigma rhythms (10.5–12.5 Hz) had lower power in patients with DS than controls. These findings extend previous research from routine electroencephalogram studies demonstrating that patients with Down syndrome had reduced circadian amplitude—the difference between wake alpha power and deep sleep delta power was smaller in Down syndrome than control subjects. A prime goal of psychological science is to understand how humans can flexibly adapt to rapidly changing contexts. The foundation of this cognitive flexibility rests on contextual adjustments of cognitive control, which can be tested using the list‐wide proportion congruency effect (LWPC). Blocks with mostly incongruent (MI) trials show smaller conflict interference effects compared to blocks with mostly congruent (MC) trials. A critical debate is how proactive and reactive control processes drive contextual adjustments. In this preregistered study (N = 30), we address this conundrum, by using the theta rhythm as a key neural marker for cognitive control. In a confound‐minimized Stroop paradigm with short alternating MC and MI blocks, we tested reaction times, error rates, and participants' individualized theta activity (2–7 Hz) in the scalp‐recorded electroencephalogram. An LWPC effect was found for both, reaction times and error rates. Importantly, the results provided clear evidence for reactive control processes in the theta rhythm: Theta power was higher in rare incongruent compared with congruent trials in MC blocks, but there was no such modulation in MI blocks. However, regarding proactive control, there were no differences in sustained theta power between MC and MI blocks. A complementary analysis of the alpha activity (8–14 Hz) also revealed no evidence for sustained attentional resources in MI blocks. These findings suggest that contextual adjustments rely mainly on reactive control processes in the theta rhythm. Proactive control, in the present study, may be limited to a flexible attentional shift but does not seem to require sustained theta activity. Human behavior needs to be constantly adjusted to changing contexts. The present study measured theta rhythm to investigate two sides of this ability: (1) proactive control, engaged in advance, and (2) reactive control, engaged only when needed. We conclude that mainly reactive control processes drive context adjustments. The underlying therapeutic mechanisms of care farming activities have not been addressed using psychophysiological data. We aimed to understand frontal cortex activation in adults during care farming activities and to explore the psychophysiological effects. Using a randomized crossover study method, 20 adults (average age, 31.3 ± 9.8 years) participated in 10 care farming activities, (four gardening activities, three animal-mediated activities, and three off-farming activities) for 3 minutes each at an actual care farm. Electroencephalography (EEG) was performed during the activity, and emotional states were assessed using subjective emotional questionnaires after each activity. The EEG results revealed that alpha activity increased during gardening activities, such as organizing garden plots and planting plants. Spectral edge frequency 50, which predicts the degree of arousal, increased during interaction with dogs. The results of the subjective emotional questionnaire revealed that participants experienced positive emotions, such as vigor, comfort, naturalness, and relaxation, when participating in care farming activities compared with those while resting. Therefore, this study suggests that care farming activities can induce changes in the frontal cortex activation and positive emotional states in participants. Impaired visual target detection is a common finding in schizophrenia that is linked to poor functional outcomes. However, the neural mechanisms that contribute to this deficit remain unclear. Recent research in healthy samples has identified relationships between the phase of pre-stimulus electroencephalographic (EEG) activity in the alpha band (8-12 Hz) or theta band (4-7 Hz) and the likelihood of visual target detection with and without attentional cueing, but these effects have not yet been explored in schizophrenia. We performed a study to investigate such effects in schizophrenia (n = 19) and healthy participants (n = 14), using a visual target detection task with attentional cues. We found significant relationships between pre-stimulus EEG phase properties and visual target detection in both groups, but also clear differences in the effects as a function of frequency, group, and attentional cueing. Alpha-band phase effects were relatively uniform across groups and conditions. By contrast, theta-band phase effects showed differences by group and attentional condition which could be consistent with attentional hyperfocusing in the schizophrenia group. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep-aiding music and sleep-related attentional bias based on electroencephalography (EEG) functional connectivity (FC) in patients with insomnia disorder (ID), to evaluate the effectiveness of music in aiding sleep. This study included 30 participants, comprising 15 patients with ID and 15 healthy controls (HCs). Six types of music were selected for sleep aid, and a dot-probe task based on sleep-related attentional bias was utilized to collect behavioral and EEG data. Vigilance bias and disengagement bias were measured using reaction time and EEG FC. Differences in sleep-related attentional bias before and after the intervention of music were explored to evaluate the sleep-aiding effects and identify EEG biomarkers. Compared with HCs, patients with ID showed decreased sleep-related attentional bias of EEG FC between occipital-central and temporal-frontal lobes. Among the six types of music, International Standard Sleep Aid and Lullaby had a greater impact on decreasing vigilance bias in the ID group. Additionally, the International Standard Sleep Aid and Nature Sound were more effective in decreasing disengagement bias in the ID group. This study also examined the resting-state EEG FC of patients with ID before and after the intervention of music. The results showed that the FC in the temporal, frontal, and occipital lobes significantly differed before and after the intervention of music, especially with the use of International Standard Sleep Aid, Lullaby, and Alpha Sound Wave. However, it is worth noting that these three types of music showed no similarities in EEG FC, in contrast to the result of sleep-related attentional bias of EEG FC. This study found that the sleep-related attentional bias of EEG FC has more distinct characteristics when compared to resting-state EEG FC. The results suggest that the sleep-related attentional bias of EEG FC could be a potential biomarker for assessing the sleep-aiding effect of music interventions. The approaches used in clinical and therapeutic monitoring in addictology are multiple and generally based on subjective instruments such as interviews or observations. However, the lack of frankness can be an obstacle, as the patients monitored may not be entirely honest in their responses, and improvement in symptoms does not always mean continued abstinence. This article proposes a new objective method for monitoring the clinical and therapeutic evolution of addicted patients based on the study of electro-physiological changes collected by digitized electroencephalogram (EEG). The study is a case-control study of 30 hospitalized addicts who met the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM-V) criteria for substance use disorders substance use disorders (SUD) and who underwent a standard digitized EEG at the end of their hospitalization. A control group of 30 healthy individuals was also included. This research shows a dominance of rapid-frequency beta 2 and hypovolted alpha 2 rhythms in cases with a clear sensitivity to activating maneuvers occasioned by hyperpnoea (HPN) and intermittent light stimulation (ISL) giving either a significant slowing of electrogenesis, bi-occipital entrainment, or an oculoclonic response signifying a need for further care. Alcohol, a widely commercialized psychotropic drug, and the benzodiazepine Flunitrazepam, an anxiolytic widely prescribed for patients with anxiety and insomnia problems, are well known drugs and both act on the central nervous system. The misuse and the association of these two drugs are public health concerns in several countries and could cause momentary, long-lasting and even lethal neurophysiological problems due to the potentiation of their adverse effects in synergy. The present study observed the result of the association of these drugs on electrophysiological responses in the brain, heart, and respiratory rate in Wistar rats. 8 experimental groups were determined: control, one alcohol group (20% at a dose of 1 ml/100 g VO), three Flunitrazepam groups (doses 0.1; 0.2 and 0.3 mg/kg) and three alcohol-Flunitrazepam groups (20% at a dose of 1 ml/100 g VO of alcohol, combined with 0.1; 0.2 and 0.3 mg/kg of Flunitrazepam, respectively). The results showed that there was a more pronounced reduction in alpha and theta wave power in the alcohol-Flunitrazepam groups, a decrease in the power of beta oscillations and greater sedation. There was a progressive decrease in respiratory rate linked to the increase of Flunitrazepam dose in the alcohol-Flunitrazepam associated administration. It was observed alteration in heart rate and Q-T interval in high doses of Flunitrazepam. Therefore, we conclude that the association alcohol-Flunitrazepam presented deepening of depressant synergistic effects according to the increase in the dose of the benzodiazepine, and this could cause alterations in low frequency brain oscillations, breathing, and hemodynamics of the patient. Purpose: To evaluate and compare the changes in brain activity for individuals with a single missing mandibular molar replaced with a removable dental prosthesis (RPD) and a fixed tooth-supported implant prosthesis in the static and postmasticatory phases. Materials and Methods: In total, 24 patients with a unilateral missing mandibular first molar were rehabilitated with a removable dental prosthesis and divided into two groups of 12 each; Group A was rehabilitated with implants and Group B with 3-unit toothsupported fixed partial dentures (FPDs). An electroencephalogram (EEG) was taken during the three phases of assessment: (1) before insertion of any prosthesis (N0), (2) after insertion of an RPD (N1), and (3) after cementation of an FPD or implant crown (F2). The effect of bite force with RPD (N1M) and FPD or implant prosthesis (F2M) on alpha waves was evaluated by recording EEG immediately after chewing gum for 30 seconds. Results: The improvement of the amplitude of alpha waves before and after prosthesis insertion showed a significant difference between Group As and B (P < .05) with the highest mean values of 158.3 µV, 147.9 µV, and 182.1 µV occurring in pairs F2-N0, F2-N1, and F2M-N1M, respectively, for Group A. Similarly, for the power of alpha waves between group A and B, a statistically significant difference (P < .05) with the highest mean values of 30.3 dB, 28.9 dB, 36.9 dB, and 11.2 dB in pairs F2-N0, F2-N1, F2M-N1M, and F2M-F2, respectively, was observed for Group A. There was no statistically significant increase in pair N0-N1 (P > .05). Conclusions: Replacement of a single missing tooth enhanced brain activity and was highest with an implant-supported crown. Abstract Background Binge eating (BE) is associated with a range of cognitive control deficits related to impulsivity, including lower response inhibition, preference for immediate gratification, and maladaptive decision-making. The aim was to investigate whether impulsivity and BE may interact with the decision process and underlying brain activity in outpatients with overweight or obesity who are starting a treatment to achieve weight loss. Methods A sample of 26 treatment-seeking outpatients with overweight or obesity was evaluated for impulsivity, BE, and temporal discounting rates. Impulsivity was measured with the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), according to which two groups were composed: high BIS and low BIS; BE was assessed with the eating disorders module of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM5—Research Version, according to which two groups were composed: with (BE group) or without BE (NBE group). Changes in subjective value of rewards were measured with the Temporal Discounting Task (TDt) where participants had to choice between sooner but smaller vs. later but larger monetary rewards. These choices were made in two differently delayed conditions (“Now” and “Not-now”). Brain rhythms were recorded through high-density electroencephalogram (hd-EEG) during the TDt. Results Patients with BE reported more impulsive tendencies and perceived sooner rewards as more gratifying when both options were delayed (Not-now condition, p = 0.02). The reward choice in the TDt was accompanied by a general EEG alpha band desynchronization in parietal areas observed without differences between experimental conditions and patients groups. No effects were observed within the Now condition or in the other EEG bands. Conclusions The tendency to favor immediate rewards may constitute an obstacle to adhering to treatment plans and achieving weight loss goals for outpatients with overweight or obesity. Clinicians are therefore encouraged to include psychological factors, such as impulsivity and dysfunctional eating behaviors, when designing weight loss programs. By addressing these psychological aspects, clinicians can better support patients in overcoming barriers to adherence and achieving sustainable weight loss. Emotion regulation as a major part of Emotion Intelligence (EI) has been found relevant to interpreters' competence. In neurocognitive studies, the frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) is a significant bio-marker closely linked to emotion regulation. The current study recorded 19 interpreters' EEG signals in emotion regulation while completing consecutive interpreting tasks and investigated their FAA at high and low levels of language difficulty. The results show that interpreters' emotions respond to the stress factor of language difficulty, and that while input (listening) FAA was correlated with output (interpreting) FAA, output FAA is significantly positively correlated to the performance of an interpreter. Introduction: Wearable in-ear electroencephalographic (EEG) devices hold significant promise for integrating brain monitoring technologies into real-life applications. However, despite the introduction of various in-ear EEG systems, there remains a necessity for validating these technologies against goldstandard, clinical-grade devices. This study aims to evaluate the signal quality of a newly developed mobile in-ear EEG device compared to a standard scalp EEG system among healthy volunteers during wakefulness and sleep. Methods: The study evaluated an in-ear EEG device equipped with dry electrodes in a laboratory setting, recording a single bipolar EEG channel using a cross-ear electrode configuration. Thirty healthy participants were recorded simultaneously using the in-ear EEG device and a conventional EEG cap system with 64 wet electrodes. Based on two recording protocols, one during a resting state condition involving alternating eye opening and closure with a low degree of artifact contamination and another consisting of a daytime nap, several quality measures were used for a quantitative comparison including root mean square (RMS) analysis, artifact quantification, similarities of relative spectral power (RSP), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) based on alpha peak criteria, and cross-signal correlations of alpha activity during eyes-closed conditions and sleep activities. The statistical significance of our results was assessed through nonparametric permutation tests with False Discovery Rate (FDR) control. Results: During the resting state, in-ear and scalp EEG signals exhibited similar fluctuations, characterized by comparable RMS values. However, intermittent signal alterations were noticed in the in-ear recordings during nap sessions, attributed to movements of the head and facial muscles. Spectral analysis indicated similar patterns between in-ear and scalp EEG, showing prominent peaks in the alpha range (8-12 Hz) during rest and in the low-frequency range during naps (particularly in the theta range of 4-7 Hz). Analysis of alpha wave characteristics during eye closures revealed smaller alpha wave amplitudes and slightly lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values in the in-ear EEG compared to scalp EEG. In around 80% of cases, cross-correlation analysis between in-ear and scalp signals, using a contralateral bipolar montage of 64 scalp electrodes, revealed significant correlations with scalp EEG (p < 0.01), particularly evident in the FT11-FT12 and T7-T8 electrode derivations. Conclusion: Our findings support the feasibility of using in-ear EEG devices with dry-contact electrodes for brain activity monitoring, compared to a standard scalp EEG, notably for wakefulness and sleep uses. Although marginal signal degradation is associated with head and facial muscle contractions, the in-ear device offers promising applications for long-term EEG recordings, particularly in scenarios requiring enhanced comfort and user-friendliness. Solid organ transplant recipients (SOTR) are at increased risk from COVID-19. Over time, the absolute risk of adverse outcomes after COVID-19 has decreased in both the nonimmunosuppressed/immunocompromised (non-ISC) general population, and amongst SOTR. Using the N3C, we examined the absolute risk of mortality, major adverse renal or cardiac events, and hospitalization after COVID-19 diagnosis amongst non-ISC and SOTR populations over five waves of the pandemic (Wave 1: Ancestral COVID; Wave 2: Alpha; Wave 3: Delta; Wave 4: Omicron; Wave 5: Omicron). Within each wave, we determined the relative risk of each outcome for SOTR versus the non-ISC population based on crude event rates, and then used multivariable cox proportional hazards models and logistic regression to determine the adjusted risk of each outcome based on SOT status. Throughout the pandemic, including during the Omicron wave (Wave 5), SOTR were at greater absolute risk for each outcome than non-ISC patients (p-values all <0.001). The adjusted risk of SOT status for each outcome was relatively stable over time (aHR 1.28-1.61 for mortality; aHR 1.31-1.47 for MACE; aHR 1.72-1.90 for MARCE; aHR 1.75-2.07 for AKI; and aOR 1.53-1.81 for hospitalization). The role of experience in the development and maintenance of emergent network properties such as cortical oscillations and states is poorly understood. To define how early-life experience affects cortical dynamics in the visual cortex of adult, head-fixed mice, we examined the effects of two forms of blindness initiated before eye opening and continuing through recording: (1) bilateral loss of retinal input (enucleation) and (2) degradation of visual input (eyelid suture). Neither form of deprivation fundamentally altered the state-dependent regulation of firing rates or local field potentials. However, each deprivation caused unique changes in network behavior. Laminar analysis revealed two different generative mechanisms for low-frequency synchronization: one prevalent during movement and the other during quiet wakefulness. The former was absent in enucleated mice, suggesting a mouse homolog of human alpha oscillations. In addition, neurons in enucleated animals were less correlated and fired more regularly, but no change in mean firing rate. Eyelid suture decreased firing rates during quiet wakefulness, but not during movement, with no effect on neural correlations or regularity. Sutured animals showed a broadband increase in depth EEG power and an increased occurrence, but reduced central frequency, of narrowband gamma oscillations. The complementary—rather than additive—effects of lid suture and enucleation suggest that the development of emergent network properties does not require vision but is plastic to modified input. Our results suggest a complex interaction of internal set points and experience determines mature cortical activity, with low-frequency synchronization being particularly susceptible to early deprivation. A compact description of the frequency structure and topography of human alpha-band rhythms is obtained by use of the first four brain activity eigenmodes previously derived from corticothalamic neural field theory. Just two eigenmodes that overlap in frequency are found to reproduce the observed topography of the classical alpha rhythm for subjects with a single, occipitally concentrated alpha peak in their electroencephalograms. Alpha frequency splitting and relative amplitudes of double alpha peaks are explored analytically and numerically within this four-mode framework using eigenfunction expansion and perturbation methods. These effects are found to result primarily from the different eigenvalues and corticothalamic gains corresponding to the eigenmodes. Three modes with two non-overlapping frequencies suffice to reproduce the observed topography for subjects with a double alpha peak, where the appearance of a distinct second alpha peak requires an increase of the corticothalamic gain of higher eigenmodes relative to the first. Conversely, alpha blocking is inferred to be linked to a relatively small attention-dependent reduction of the gain of the relevant eigenmodes, whose effect is enhanced by the near-critical state of the brain and whose sign is consistent with inferences from neural field theory. The topographies and blocking of the mu and tau rhythms within the alpha-band are explained analogously via eigenmodes. Moreover, the observation of three rhythms in the alpha band is due to there being exactly three members of the first family of spatially nonuniform modes. These results thus provide a simple, unified description of alpha band rhythms and enable experimental observations of spectral structure and topography to be linked directly to theory and underlying physiology. Electroencephalography (EEG) is useful for studying brain activity in major depressive disorder (MDD), particularly focusing on theta and alpha frequency bands via power spectral density (PSD). However, PSD-based analysis has often produced inconsistent results due to difficulties in distinguishing between periodic and aperiodic components of EEG signals. We analyzed EEG data from 114 young adults, including 74 healthy controls (HCs) and 40 MDD patients, assessing periodic and aperiodic components alongside conventional PSD at both source and electrode levels. Machine learning algorithms classified MDD versus HC based on these features. Sensor-level analysis showed stronger Hedge's g effect sizes for parietal theta and frontal alpha activity than source-level analysis. MDD individuals exhibited reduced theta and alpha activity relative to HC. Logistic regression-based classifications showed that periodic components slightly outperformed PSD, with the best results achieved by combining periodic and aperiodic features (AUC = 0.82). Strong negative correlations were found between reduced periodic parietal theta and frontal alpha activities and higher scores on the Beck Depression Inventory, particularly for the anhedonia subscale. This study emphasizes the superiority of sensor-level over source-level analysis for detecting MDD-related changes and highlights the value of incorporating both periodic and aperiodic components for a more refined understanding of depressive disorders. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that modulates the noradrenergic activity of the locus coeruleus (LC). Yet, there is still uncertainty about the most effective stimulation and reliable outcome parameters. In a double blind, sham-controlled study including a sample of healthy young individuals (N = 29), we compared a shorter (3.4 s) and a longer (30 s) stimulation duration and investigated the effects of taVNS (real vs. sham) on saliva samples (alpha amylase and cortisol concentration), pupil (pupillary light reflex and pupil size at rest) and EEG data (alpha and theta activity at rest, ERPs for No-Go signals), and cognitive tasks (Go/No-Go and Stop Signal Tasks). Salivary alpha amylase concentration was significantly increased in the real as compared to sham stimulation for the 30 s stimulation condition. In the 3.4 s stimulation condition, we found prolonged reaction times and increased error rates in the Go/No-Go task and increased maximum acceleration in the pupillary light reflex. For the other outcomes, no significant differences were found. Our results show that prolonged stimulation increases salivary alpha-amylase, which was expected from the functional properties of the LC. The finding of longer response times to short taVNS stimulation was not expected and cannot be explained by an increase in LC activity. Working memory (WM) is crucial for adequate performance execution in effective decision-making, enabling individuals to identify patterns and link information by focusing on current and past situations. This work explored behavioral and electrophysiological (EEG) WM correlates through a novel decision-making task, based on real-life situations, assessing WM workload related to contextual variables. A total of 24 participants performed three task phases (encoding, retrieval, and metacognition) while their EEG activity (delta, theta, alpha, and beta frequency bands) was continuously recorded. From the three phases, three main behavioral indices were computed: Efficiency in complex Decision-making, Tolerance of Decisional Complexity, and Metacognition of Difficulties. Results showed the central role of alpha and beta bands during encoding and retrieval: decreased alpha/beta activity in temporoparietal areas during encoding might indicate activation of regions related to verbal WM performance and a load-related effect, while decreased alpha activity in the same areas and increased beta activity over posterior areas during retrieval might indicate, respectively, active information processing and focused attention. Evidence from correlational analysis between the three indices and EEG bands are also discussed. Integration of behavioral and metacognitive data gathered through this novel task and their interrelation with EEG correlates during task performance proves useful to assess WM workload during complex managerial decision-making.
