Abstract

Visible light positioning(VLP) has gained prominence as a highly accurate indoor positioning technique. Few techniques consider the practical limitations of implementing VLP systems for indoor positioning. These limitations range from having a single LED in the field of view(FoV) of the image sensor to not having enough images for training deep learning techniques. Practical implementation of indoor positioning techniques needs to leverage the ubiquity of smartphones, which is the case with VLP using complementary metal oxide semiconductor(CMOS) sensors. Images for VLP can be gathered only after the lights in question have been installed making it a cumbersome process. These limitations are addressed in the proposed technique, which uses simulated data of a single LED to train machine learning models and test them on actual images captured from a similar experimental setup. Such testing produced mean three dimensional(3D) positioning error of 2.88 centimeters while training with real images achieves accuracy of less than one centimeter compared to 6.26 centimeters of the closest competitor., Comment: To be presented in IEEE Region 10 technical conference, 31 oct-3 nov 2023, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Abstract

We demonstrate the broadband supercontinuum (SC) generation in photonic crystal fiber (PCF), highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) and ZBLAN (ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF) fiber with a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL). The passively mode-locked EDFL incorporates a CNT-based saturable absorber and has achieved a pulse width of 620 fs with a pulse repetition rate of 18 MHz. The spectral broadening phenomena inside each fiber has been observed with respect to the variation in seed pulse power. Abstract

With the rapid development of smart terminals and infrastructures, as well as diversified applications (e.g., virtual and augmented reality, remote surgery and holographic projection) with colorful requirements, current networks (e.g., 4G and upcoming 5G networks) may not be able to completely meet quickly rising traffic demands. Accordingly, efforts from both industry and academia have already been put to the research on 6G networks. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) has been utilized as a new paradigm for the design and optimization of 6G networks with a high level of intelligence. Therefore, this article proposes an AI-enabled intelligent architecture for 6G networks to realize knowledge discovery, smart resource management, automatic network adjustment and intelligent service provisioning, where the architecture is divided into four layers: intelligent sensing layer, data mining and analytics layer, intelligent control layer and smart application layer. We then review and discuss the applications of AI techniques for 6G networks and elaborate how to employ the AI techniques to efficiently and effectively optimize the network performance, including AI-empowered mobile edge computing, intelligent mobility and handover management, and smart spectrum management. 12. An Advanced Integrated Visible Light Communication and Localization System

Abstract

Visible light communication (VLC) is an emerging wireless technology to support high transmission rate for indoor devices by using existing lighting infrastructure, and VLC-based indoor localization is capable of providing high-accuracy localization. However, current VLC-based localization systems suffer from several key challenges such as sensitivity to random tilting of the receiver, which limits its full potential in real-world applications. In this paper, we design an integrated visible light communication and localization (VLCL) system to simultaneously support accurate real-time localization and communication services for indoor devices. To achieve this, an advanced differential phase difference of arrival (A-DPDOA) localization design is developed to simplify hardware and improve tracking robustness. In addition, a joint adaptive modulation, subcarrier and power allocation scheme is also proposed, which aims to improve the communication data rate and localization accuracy. Extensive experiments are performed to demonstrate that the proposed integrated VLCL system achieves higher localization accuracy and transmission data rate, compared to existing systems and schemes. Experiments also illustrate that the localization algorithm is more robust against the random tilting of the receiver under device movement in two-dimensional and three-dimensional scenarios.

Abstract

A new analytical model is presented to study nonlinear distortion due to cross-phase modulation in dispersive and nonlinear wavelength-division-multiplexing microwave fiber-optic links. The model is not based on the pump-probe approach. Hence, it can be used to analyze a larger variety of links, including, in particular, electrooptical upconversion links. Our simulations and experiments show that the model predicts the nonlinear distortion due to cross-phase modulation quite accurately, even when the modulating microwave frequency is in tens of gigahertz and the fiber length is in tens of kilometers. Detailed analyses of the distortion due to cross-phase modulation for links with optical single-sideband modulation are presented. Measured results for optical single-sideband are shown to match our theoretical predictions very well. Our results show that the nonlinear distortion due to cross-phase modulation can be a limiting factor for optical launch power in wavelength-division-multiplexing microwave fiber-optic links; moreover, the maximum possible nonlinear distortion level for a higher frequency may be lower than that for a lower frequency. Also presented are some simple approximations for a quick estimate of the level of the nonlinear distortion. Abstract

Highly nonlinear fibers (HNLF) is one of the most preferred optical nonlinear mediums for efficient supercontinuum (SC) generation due to its property of good laser beam confinement in a small core area and high nonlinearity. Till date, SC generation in HNLF is explored using very long length fibers, typically sub-kilometre. In this work, for the first time to our knowledge, the physical length of the HNLF used to generate broad SC is reduced by considering the nonlinearity length. This is also first-time demonstration of a very flat and broad SC generation in a short-length of HNLF using carbon-nanotube (CNT) based passively mode-locked erbium-doped femtosecond fiber laser. The CNT based modelocking has achieved a pulse width of 620 fs with a repetition rate of 18 MHz at a centre wavelength of 1565 nm. A single stage amplification is employed on the mode-locked pulses and the spectral evolution of pulse inside the HNLF at various input power levels is studied.
