Abstract

Amphiphilic block copolymers are known to self-assemble into various morphologies, including ellipsoids, tubular structures, toroids, vesicles, micellar structures. In this paper, we discuss the synthesis of copolymeric nanostructures (CNs) using poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline)-block-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PEtOx-b-PCL) amphiphilic block copolymers. Our data indicate that - varying the molecular weight and the number of repeating units dictate the nature of morphology. That is, the formation of self-assembled morphologies from ellipsoid to rod-like architectures are observed in aqueous solution, depending on the mass ratio of the hydrophilic block (f(PEtOx)). To best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the morphological transitions of PEtOx-b-PCL amphiphilic block copolymer-based CNs with different f(PEtOx)) values in the literature.

Abstract

This study develops a Web-based collaborative system framework based on a multiple perspective approach. This framework is a recent decision support system (DSS) paradigm proposed by Courtney [Decis. Support Syst. 31 (2001) 17] for knowledge management of and decision making about a special organizational problem. It consists of four main components. The first component is a group decision-making (GDM) approach in which many participants' points of views are considered in the modeling of a specific problem. In the second component, many multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques are employed. The third component is an intelligent system. The fourth component is related to advanced communications that are supported by new technologies such as mobile tools, mobile e-service, and the wireless application protocol (WAP). A new software system called InteliTeam is developed based on the framework. InteliTeam can be accessed from application service providers (ASP), so installation of the software is not required. The software provides online mapping, online queries, and online analysis functions for users anywhere at any time. An example of the software as tested on many organizational problems is presented to illustrate its effectiveness. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The detection of saccharides in biological media is of great current importance for the monitoring of disease states. We have previously reported that solutions of boronic acid-functionalized macrocycles form acyclic oligomeric materials in situ. The oligomers contain fluorescent xanthene moieties. Current efforts are aimed at modulating the spectroscopic responses of these materials for the analysis of specific sugars. We describe conditions whereby the xanthene boronic acids exhibit high colorimetric fructose selectivity. In contrast, at physiological levels selective glucose monitoring can be achieved via fluorescence. Additionally, we describe a method which exhibits promise for detecting both glucose and fructose at dual wavelengths in the UV-Vis region. Mechanistic rationale for each of these findings is presented.
