Search

A common and effective method for calculating the steady-state distribution of a process under stochastic resetting is the renewal approach that requires only the knowledge of the reset-free propagator of the underlying process and the resetting time distribution. The renewal approach is widely used for simple model systems such as a freely diffusing particle with exponentially distributed resetting times. However, in many real-world physical systems, the propagator, the resetting time distribution, or both are not always known beforehand. In this study, we develop a numerical renewal method to determine the steady-state probability distribution of particle positions based on the measured system propagator in the absence of resetting combined with the known or measured resetting time distribution. We apply and validate our method in two distinct systems: one involving interacting particles and the other featuring strong environmental memory. Thus, the renewal approach can be used to predict the steady state under stochastic resetting of any system, provided that the free propagator can be measured and that it undergoes complete resetting.

Using standard kinetic equations, we show that the thermal equilibrium between conduction electrons and phonons is unstable when the renormalized electron-phonon coupling exceeds a certain threshold. We prove that negative electronic specific heat, $C_\mathrm{el}<0$, is sufficient for instability. Specifically, the instability sets in as soon as the quasiparticle weight becomes negative for a range of energies, even before $C_\mathrm{el}$ turns negative. The dispersionless limit of the standard Eliashberg theory of superconductivity is studied. The effective electron-electron interactions are mediated by Einstein phonons of frequency $\Omega>0$, equipped with electron-phonon coupling strength $\lambda$. This allows for a detailed evaluation of the general results on $T_c$ for phonons with non-trivial dispersion relation, obtained in a previous paper, (II), by the authors. The variational principle for the linear stability boundary $\mathscr{S}_{\!c}$ of the normal state region against perturbations toward the superconducting region, obtained in (II), simplifies as follows: If $(\lambda,\Omega,T)\in\mathscr{S}_{\!c}$, then $\lambda = 1/\mathfrak{h}(\varpi)$, where $\varpi:=\Omega/2\pi T$, and where $\mathfrak{h}(\varpi)>0$ is the largest eigenvalue of a compact self-adjoint operator $\mathfrak{H}(\varpi)$ on $\ell^2$ sequences; $\mathfrak{H}(\varpi)$ is the dispersionless limit $P(d\omega)\to\delta(\omega-\Omega)d\omega$ of the operator $\mathfrak{K}(P,T)$ of (II). It is shown that when $\varpi \leq \sqrt{2}$, then the map $\varpi\mapsto\mathfrak{h}(\varpi)$ is invertible. For $\lambda>0.77$ this yields: (i) the existence of a critical temperature $T_c(\lambda,\Omega) = \Omega f(\lambda)$; (ii) a sequence of lower bounds on $f(\lambda)$ that converges to $f(\lambda)$. The standard Eliashberg theory of superconductivity is studied. The effective electron-electron interactions are mediated by dispersive phonons, with Eliashberg spectral function $\alpha^2 F(\omega)\geq 0$ that is $\propto\omega^2$ for small $\omega>0$ and vanishes for large $\omega$. The Eliashberg function also defines the electron-phonon coupling strength $\lambda:= 2 \int_0^\infty\frac{\alpha^2 F(\omega)}{\omega}d\omega$. Setting $\frac{2\alpha^2 F(\omega)}{\omega}=: \lambda P^\prime(\omega)$, with $P^\prime(\omega)$ the density of a probability measure $P(d\omega)$ supported in $[0,\overline{\Omega}(P)]$ with $0< \overline{\Omega}(P)$, and assuming as usual that the phase transition between normal and superconductivity coincides with the linear stability boundary $\mathscr{S}_{\!c}$ of the normal region against perturbations toward the superconducting region, it is shown that $\mathscr{S}_{\!c}$ is a graph of a function $\Lambda(P,T)$ that is determined by a variational principle: if $(\lambda,P,T)\in\mathscr{S}_{\!c}$, then $\lambda = 1/\mathfrak{k}(P,T)$, where $\mathfrak{k}(P,T)>0$ is the largest eigenvalue of a compact self-adjoint operator $\mathfrak{K}(P,T)$ on $\ell^2$ sequences. Using the recent reformulation for the Eliashberg theory of superconductivity in terms of a classical interacting Bloch spin chain model, rigorous upper and lower bounds on the critical temperature $T_c$ are obtained for the $\gamma$ model -- a version of Eliashberg theory in which the effective electron-electron interaction is proportional to $(g/|\omega_n-\omega_m|)^{\gamma}$, where $\omega_n-\omega_m$ is the transferred Matsubara frequency, $g>0$ a reference energy, and $\gamma>0$ a parameter. The rigorous lower bounds are based on a variational principle that identifies $(T_c/g)^\gamma$ with the largest (positive) eigenvalue of an explicitly constructed compact, self-adjoint operator $\mathfrak{G}(\gamma)$. These lower bounds form an increasing sequence that converges to $T_c(g,\gamma)$. We establish fundamental upper bounds on the electron-phonon interaction strength and superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ in metals stemming from an intrinsic instability of the equilibrium between electrons and the crystal lattice with respect to strong interaction. Our theory explains why the largest observed electron-phonon couplings $\lambda\le 4$ as well as the mechanism of metastable superconductivity with higher $T_c$. Scalar adjectives pertain to various domain scales and vary in intensity within each scale (e.g. certain is more intense than likely on the likelihood scale). Scalar implicatures arise from the consideration of alternative statements which could have been made. They can be triggered by scalar adjectives and require listeners to reason pragmatically about them. Some scalar adjectives are more likely to trigger scalar implicatures than others. This phenomenon is referred to as scalar diversity. In this study, we probe different families of Large Language Models such as GPT-4 for their knowledge of the lexical semantics of scalar adjectives and one specific aspect of their pragmatics, namely scalar diversity. We find that they encode rich lexical-semantic information about scalar adjectives. However, the rich lexical-semantic knowledge does not entail a good understanding of scalar diversity. We also compare current models of different sizes and complexities and find that larger models are not always better. We discuss the dependence of the critical properties of the Anderson model on the dimension $d$ in the language of $\beta$-function and renormalization group recently introduced in Ref.[arXiv:2306.14965] in the context of Anderson transition on random regular graphs. We show how in the delocalized region, including the transition point, the one-parameter scaling part of the $\beta$-function for the fractal dimension $D_{1}$ evolves smoothly from its $d=2$ form, in which $\beta_2\leq 0$, to its $\beta_\infty\geq 0$ form, which is represented by the regular random graph (RRG) result. We show how the $\epsilon=d-2$ expansion and the $1/d$ expansion around the RRG result can be reconciled and how the initial part of a renormalization group trajectory governed by the irrelevant exponent $y$ depends on dimensionality. We also show how the irrelevant exponent emerges out of the high-gradient terms of expansion in the nonlinear sigma-model and put forward a conjecture about a lower bound for the fractal dimension. It has been recently reported that irregular objects sink irregularly when released in a granular medium: a subtle lack of symmetry in the density or shape of a macroscopic object may produce a large tilting and deviation from the vertical path when released from the free surface of a granular bed. This can be inconvenient -- even catastrophic -- in scenarios ranging from buildings to space rovers. Here, we take advantage of the high sensitivity of granular intruders to shape asymmetry: we introduce a granular intruder equipped with an inflatable bladder that protrudes from the intruder's surface as an autonomous response to an unwanted tilting. So, the intruder's symmetry is only slightly manipulated, resulting in the rectification of the undesired tilting. Our smart intruder is even able to rectify its settling path when perturbed by an external element, like a vertical wall. The general concept introduced here can be potentially expanded to real-life scenarios, such as ``smart foundations'' to mitigate the inclination of constructions on a partially fluidized soil., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

In one dimension density-density interactions of particles reduce their mobility and hence the Drude weight, which controls the divergence of the optical conductivity at zero frequency, decreases. We study effects of pair hopping events on this result in a 1D system of spinless fermions. The considered model consists of the usual single-particle hopping and pair hopping terms. In the absence of the density-density interactions, we first show that a variation of the pair hopping amplitude results in a monotonic change of the Drude weight. We next demonstrate that weak nearest-neighbor density-density interactions increase the Drude weight, whereas in the regime of strong interactions the Drude weight decreases as expected. Our numerical findings are supported by bosonization results.

In an era of increasing pressure to achieve sustainable agriculture, the optimization of livestock feed for enhancing yield and minimizing environmental impact is a paramount objective. This study presents a pioneering approach towards this goal, using rumen microbiome data to predict the efficacy of feed additives in dairy cattle. We collected an extensive dataset that includes methane emissions from 2,190 Holstein cows distributed across 34 distinct sites. The cows were divided into control and experimental groups in a double-blind, unbiased manner, accounting for variables such as age, days in lactation, and average milk yield. The experimental groups were administered one of four leading commercial feed additives: Agolin, Kexxtone, Allimax, and Relyon. Methane emissions were measured individually both before the administration of additives and over a subsequent 12-week period. To develop our predictive model for additive efficacy, rumen microbiome samples were collected from 510 cows from the same herds prior to the study's onset. These samples underwent deep metagenomic shotgun sequencing, yielding an average of 15.7 million reads per sample. Utilizing innovative artificial intelligence techniques we successfully estimated the efficacy of these feed additives across different farms. The model's robustness was further confirmed through validation with independent cohorts, affirming its generalizability and reliability. Our results underscore the transformative capability of using targeted feed additive strategies to both optimize dairy yield and milk composition, and to significantly reduce methane emissions. Specifically, our predictive model demonstrates a scenario where its application could guide the assignment of additives to farms where they are most effective. We consider a one-dimensional system of spinless fermions with single particle and pair hoppings in a potential on-site disorder. The pair hopping term violates integrability of the model and enhances superconducting fluctuations in the bulk of the liquid. By means of the Abelian bosonization and extensive numerical DMRG calculations we provide evidence that sufficiently large pair hopping amplitude guarantees the survival of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase at weak disorder. Large disorder drives the system to the Bose glass phase, realising the Giamarchi-Schulz scenario in such a system.

We use the Toda chain model to demonstrate that numerical simulation of integrable Hamiltonian dynamics using time discretization destroys integrability and induces dynamical chaos. Specifically, we integrate this model with various symplectic integrators parametrized by the time step $\tau$ and measure the Lyapunov time $T_{\Lambda}$ (inverse of the largest Lyapunov exponent $\Lambda$). A key observation is that $T_{\Lambda}$ is finite whenever $\tau$ is finite but diverges when $\tau \rightarrow 0$. We compare the Toda chain results with the nonitegrable Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou chain dynamics. In addition, we observe a breakdown of the simulations at times $T_B \gg T_{\Lambda}$ due to certain positions and momenta becoming extremely large (``Not a Number''). This phenomenon originates from the periodic driving introduced by symplectic integrators and we also identify the concrete mechanism of the breakdown in the case of the Toda chain., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

We present a renormalization group analysis of the problem of Anderson localization on a Random Regular Graph (RRG) which generalizes the renormalization group of Abrahams, Anderson, Licciardello, and Ramakrishnan to infinite-dimensional graphs. The renormalization group equations necessarily involve two parameters (one being the changing connectivity of sub-trees), but we show that the one-parameter scaling hypothesis is recovered for sufficiently large system sizes for both eigenstates and spectrum observables. We also explain the non-monotonic behavior of dynamical and spectral quantities as a function of the system size for values of disorder close to the transition, by identifying two terms in the beta function of the running fractal dimension of different signs and functional dependence. TThe problem of fermion masses hierarchy in the Standard Model is considered on a toy model of a 10-dimensional space-time with a IIA supergravity type background. Dirac equation on this background, after compactification of extra 4- and 1-dimensional subspaces, gives the spectrum of Fermi fields which profiles in 5 dimensions and corresponding Higgs generated masses in 4 dimensions depend on the eigenvalues of Dirac operator on the named compact subspaces. Schwarzschild Euclidean deformation of the supergravity throat with the "apple-shaped" conical singularity permits to leave only three non-divergent angular modes interpreted as three generations of the down-type quarks. Calculated ratio $m_{d} / m_{s} = e^{-3}$ exactly coincides with its experimentally observed value for integer values of two free parameters of the 10-dimensional background. Equations for non-chiral modes coincide with the non-relativistic Schr\"odinger equation for an electron moving in a Coulomb field; the corresponding small fermion masses generated by the twisted boundary conditions are expressed through the degenerate hypergeometric functions., Comment: 21 pages

Search processes in the natural world are often punctuated by home returns that reset the position of foraging animals, birds, and insects. Many theoretical, numerical, and experimental studies have now demonstrated that this strategy can drastically facilitate search, which could explain its prevalence. To further facilitate search, foragers also work as a group: modifying their surroundings in highly sophisticated ways e.g., by leaving chemical scent trails that imprint the memory of previous excursions. Here, we design a controlled experiment to show that the benefit coming from such ``environmental memory'' is significant even for a single, non-intelligent, searcher that is limited to simple physical interactions with its surroundings. To this end, we employ a self-propelled bristle robot that moves randomly within an arena filled with obstacles that the robot can push around. To mimic home returns, we reset the bristle robot's position at constant time intervals. We show that trails created by the robot give rise to a form of environmental memory that facilitates search by increasing the effective diffusion coefficient. Numerical simulations, and theoretical estimates, designed to capture the essential physics of the experiment support our conclusions and indicate that these are not limited to the particular system studied herein., Comment: 10 pages 5 figures

In this paper we give a physically transparent picture of singular-continuous spectrum in disordered systems which possess a non-ergodic extended phase. We present a simple model of identically and independently distributed level spacing in the spectrum of local density of states and show how a fat tail appears in this distribution at the broad distribution of eigenfunction amplitudes. For the model with a power-law local spacing distribution we derive the correlation function $K(\omega)$ of the local density of states and show that depending on the relation between the eigenfunction fractal dimension $D_{2}$ and the spectral fractal dimension $D_{s}$ encoded in the power-law spacing distribution, a singular continuous spectrum of a random Cantor set or that of an isolated mini-band may appear. In the limit of an infinite number of degrees of freedom the function $K(\omega)$ in the non-ergodic extended phase is singular at $\omega=0$ with the branch-cut singularity for the case of a random Cantor set and with the $\delta$-function singularity for the case of an isolated mini-band. For an absolutely continuous spectrum $K(\omega)$ tends to a finite limit as $\omega\rightarrow 0$. This article describes the development and administration of a survey to identify early childhood educators' successes and barriers when delivering remote instruction (e.g., online whole or small group instruction) during the COVID-19 pandemic to children 2-5 years old. The survey was developed using procedures outlined by the commonly accepted stages of an instrument development process. Content validity was established using four approaches: (a) identification of the purpose of the survey, (b) creation of a blueprint of items, (c) cognitive interviews, and (d) expert panel review. A total of 1,053 early childhood educators began the survey, with 808 (77%) of the responses included because educators met the inclusion criteria of working in the United States and responding to at least one question related to remote instruction. The survey contained 37 closed-ended and six open-ended items covering eight domains: (a) demographic information; (b) preparation, guidelines, and materials for remote learning; (c) caregiver communication and engagement; (d) assessment; (e) instruction;(f) educators' levels of confidence before and after remote learning; (g) access to services (i.e., wraparound and/or special education); and (h) planning for the return to face-to-face instruction. Both quantitative (descriptive, t-test, regression, ANOVA, and Chi-square tests) and consensual qualitative research analyses were applied to summarize the survey results. Findings from this survey indicated that even with limited or no guidance from administrators, educators successfully adapted to remote instruction and their levels of confidence increased over time. Ongoing improvements need to be made to sustain regular communication with all families, to offer access to technology (i.e., devices and internet), to administer assessments or universal screeners, and to provide cohesive guidelines and expectations. Results from this study begin to shed light on early childhood educators' adaptation to remote instruction as a result of COVID-19. We study the behavior of cylindrical objects as they sink into a drygranular bed fluidized due to lateral oscillations. Somewhat unexpectedly, we have found that, within a large range of lateral shaking powers,cylinders with flat bottoms sink vertically, while those with a''foundation'' consisting in ashallow ring attached to their bottom, tilt besides sinking. Thelatter scenario seems to dominate independently from the nature ofthe foundation when strong enough lateral vibrations are applied. Weare able to explain the observed behavior by quasi-2D numericalsimulations, which also demonstrate the influence of the intruder's aspect ratio. The vertical sink dynamics is explained with the help of a Newtonian equation of motion for the intruder. We study fermions at quantum criticality with extremely retarded interactions of the form $V(\omega_l)=(g/|\omega_l|)^\gamma$, where $\omega_l$ is the transferred Matsubara frequency. This system undergoes a normal-superconductor phase transition at a critical temperature $T=T_c$. The order parameter is the frequency-dependent gap function $\Delta(\omega_n)$ as in the Eliashberg theory. In general, the interaction is extremely retarded for $\gamma\gg 1$, except at low temperatures $\gamma>3$ is sufficient. We evaluate the normal state specific heat, $T_c$, the jump in the specific heat, $\Delta(\omega_n)$ near $T_c$, and the Landau free energy. Our answers are asymptotically exact in the limit $\gamma\to\infty$. At low temperatures, we prove that the global minimum of the free energy is nondegenerate and determine the order parameter, the free energy, and the specific heat. These answers are exact for $T\to0$ and $\gamma>3$. We show that the Migdal-Eliashberg theory loses validity at a finite value $\lambda_c$ of the electron-phonon coupling $\lambda$ regardless of the underlying model Hamiltonian. The value of $\lambda_c$ is approximately between 3.0 and 3.7. The new phase that emerges at $\lambda>\lambda_c$ breaks the lattice translational symmetry. Depending on the filling fraction and crystal symmetry, it is an insulator or a Fermi liquid. Its characteristic feature is a gap or a pronounced depression of the fermionic density of states near the Fermi level. We establish the breakdown from within the Migdal-Eliashberg theory by demonstrating that the normal state specific heat is negative for $\lambda\ge 3.7$ and the quasiparticle lifetime vanishes in the strong coupling limit. At fixed $\lambda>\lambda_c$, the transition to the new phase occurs at a critical temperature higher than the superconducting transition temperature. In addition, there is a first order phase transition between the new phase and the superconducting state as we vary $\lambda$ across $\lambda_c$ at fixed temperature. We put forward a new theory - lattice-fermionic theory of superfluidity - that bridges the gap between the Migdal-Eliashberg approach and the physics at stronger coupling. We formulate the Migdal-Eliashberg theory of electron-phonon interactions in terms of classical spins by mapping the free energy to a Heisenberg spin chain in a Zeeman magnetic field. Spin components are energy-integrated normal and anomalous Green's functions and sites of the chain are fermionic Matsubara frequencies. The Zeeman field grows linearly with the spin coordinate and competes with ferromagnetic spin-spin interaction that falls off as the square of the inverse distance. The spin-chain representation makes a range of previously unknown properties plain to see. In particular, infinitely many new solutions of the Eliashberg equations both in the normal and superconducting states emerge at strong coupling. These saddle points of the free-energy functional correspond to spin flips. We argue that they are also fixed points of kinetic equations and play an essential role in far from equilibrium dynamics of strongly coupled superconductors. Up to an overall phase, the frequency-dependent gap function that minimizes the free energy must be non-negative.
