Alum is the most used vaccine adjuvant, due to its safety, low cost and adjuvanticity to various antigens. However, the mechanism of action of alum is complex and not yet fully understood, and the immune responses elicited can be weak and antigen-dependent. While several antigens rapidly desorb from alum upon exposure to serum, phosphorylated proteins remain tightly bound through a ligand-exchange reaction with surface hydroxyls on alum. Here, bacterial proteins and glycoconjugates have been modified with phosphoserines, aiming at enhancing the binding to alum and prolonging their bioavailability. Tetanus toxoid protein and Salmonella Typhi fragmented Vi-CRM conjugate were used. Both antigens rapidly and completely desorbed from alum after incubation with serum, verified via a competitive ELISA assay, and set up to rapidly evaluate in vitro antigen desorption from alum. After antigen modification with phosphoserines, desorption from alum was slowed down, and modified antigens demonstrated more prolonged retention at the injection sites through in vivo optical imaging in mice. Both modified antigens elicited stronger immune responses in mice, after a single injection only, compared to unmodified antigens. A stronger binding to alum could result in potent single-dose vaccine candidates and opens the possibility to design novel carrier proteins for glycoconjugates and improved versions of bacterial recombinant proteins. Electrocoagulation has demonstrated its efficacy in treating industrial effluents by effectively removing pollutants, particularly metallic contaminants. The electrochemical processes occurring at aluminum electrodes have shown excellent performance in this regard. In this study, electrocoagulation experiments were conducted on an industrial effluent originating from an electroplating bath situated in Casablanca, Morocco. The primary objective was to eliminate chromium in the effluent and reuse the processed water for other applications within our facility. To achieve this goal, we systematically optimized various operational parameters influencing the electrocoagulation efficiency, including electrical voltage, electrode material, stirring speed, and electrode spacing. Additionally, we assessed their impact on pH, conductivity, and chromium concentration. The experiments were conducted in a well-mixed reactor using an industrial solution containing a high concentration of chromium, specifically 1 g/l of Cr (VI). The chromium removal efficiency was evaluated under specific operational conditions, including the use of aluminum electrodes, regulated voltages of 6 volts and 12 volts, an optimal stirring speed of 600 rpm, and an electrode spacing of 2 cm. Despite numerous publications on the properties of PVA, to date, limited work has been undertaken to determine the physico-chemical parameters (i.e., UV light, high temperature, and relative humidity) that could affect the performance of PVA-based coatings. To this end, we performed artificial ageing processes on samples made of Opadry Orange II or of some selected components of this coating and analysed them by means of a multidisciplinary approach, using, for example, FTIR, NMR, rheology, and DMTA measurements. In this way, we analysed the influence of the critical components of the Opadry Orange II formula, such as titanium dioxide and aluminium hydroxide, on the coating characteristics under ageing conditions. Aluminium adjuvants are commonly used in vaccines to boost the effects of vaccination. Here, we assessed the benefits and harms of different aluminium adjuvants vs. other aluminium adjuvants or vs. the same aluminium adjuvant at other concentrations, administered a different number of doses, or at different particle sizes used in vaccines or vaccine excipients. We conducted a systematic review with meta-analysis and Trial Sequential Analysis to assess the certainty of evidence with Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE). We obtained data from major medical databases until 20 January 2023 and included 10 randomized clinical trials of healthy volunteers. The comparisons assessed higher vs. lower aluminium adjuvant concentrations; higher vs. lower number of doses of aluminium adjuvant; and aluminium phosphate adjuvant vs. aluminium hydroxide adjuvant. For all three comparisons, meta-analyses showed no evidence of a difference on all-cause mortality, serious adverse events, and adverse events considered non-serious. The certainty of evidence was low to very low. None of the included trials reported on quality of life or proportion of participants who developed the disease being vaccinated against. The benefits and harms of different types of aluminium adjuvants, different aluminium concentrations, different number of doses, or different particle sizes, therefore, remain uncertain. Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has a high prevalence in cloven-hoofed animals. It is also highly contagious and remains a serious threat to livestock worldwide. Despite the widespread vaccination program in Iran, outbreaks of FMD continue to occur. Vaccination is one of the most effective methods of preventing FMD. The vaccines used in Iran are of the inactivated type and contain several serotypes. Since inactivated vaccines without adjuvants do not induce a high and durable antibody response, it is necessary to use adjuvants. Montanide ISA 206 VG is a mineral oil-based adjuvant that produces a water-in-oil-in-water (w:o:w) emulsion in vaccine preparations. However, a large number of manufacturers in Iran and around the world still use alum adjuvant (with or without saponin) to produce the FMD vaccine. This study used Montanide ISA 206 and alum adjuvants to administer the O2010 serotype of the FMD virus to goats. A total of six goats were divided randomly into three groups. Vaccines were administered subcutaneously twice, at a one-month interval. Blood sampling was done at different times, and the micro-neutralization method was used to measure the neutralizing antibody titer in each serum. Seven days after the second vaccination, the alum group's antibody titer was higher but not statistically significant. However, from the 28th day after the second injection until the end of the study, the Montanide ISA 206 group's antibody titer was significantly higher than that of the alum group. Six months after the second injection, the antibody titer in the ISA 206 group remained at the peak level, while in the alum group, it decreased and reached the minimum protective level. Nine months after the second injection, the antibody titer remained at its peak level in the ISA 206 group, whereas it dropped significantly in the alum group. Based on the findings, ISA 206 VG is capable of generating long-term humoral immunity in goats against the FMD serotype O2010 and could replace aluminum hydroxide adjuvants in FMD vaccine preparations. Inactivated influenza virus vaccines usually require adjuvants to enhance their immune protection. Aluminium hydroxide (Al) adjuvant is commonly used as an adjuvant in human vaccines, mainly inducing Th2 immune response. In this study, Al adjuvant and TLR7/8 agonist R848 were combined to form a complex adjuvant, and its adjuvancity was evaluated in immunization of mice with inactivated influenza virus H7N9 vaccine. Three weeks after a single immunization, mice were attacked with a lethal dose (20 LD50) of homologous virus. The results showed that, compared with vaccine adjuvanted with R848 or Al alone, R848+ Al adjuvanted vaccine enhanced mice higher titers of serum IgG and IgG2a subtype antibodies and induced both Th1 and Th2 cytokines, with a Th1-biased response, and provided potent protection in mice against lethal virus infection. Therefore, the adjuvancity of R848+ Al is superior to that of R848 or Al alone. The study may help to improve Al adjuvancity and immune effects of inactivated influenza vaccines. Although aluminium-based vaccines have been used for almost over a century, their mechanism of action remains unclear. It is established that antigen adsorption to the adjuvant facilitates delivery of the antigen to immune cells at the injection site. To further increase our understanding of aluminium-based vaccines, it is important to gain additional insights on the interactions between the aluminium and antigens, including antigen distribution over the adjuvant particles. Immuno-assays can further help in this regard. In this paper, we evaluated how established formulation strategies (i.e., sequential, competitive, and separate antigen addition) applied to four different antigens and aluminium oxyhydroxide, lead to formulation changes over time. Results showed that all formulation samples were stable, and that no significant changes were observed in terms of physical-chemical properties. Antigen distribution across the bulk aluminium population, however, did show a maturation effect, with some initial dependence on the formulation approach and the antigen adsorption strength. Sequential and competitive approaches displayed similar results in terms of the homogeneity of antigen distribution across aluminium particles, while separately adsorbed antigens were initially more highly poly-dispersed. Nevertheless, the formulation sample prepared via separate adsorption also reached homogeneity according to each antigen adsorption strength. This study indicated that antigen distribution across aluminium particles is a dynamic feature that evolves over time, which is initially influenced by the formulation approach and the specific adsorption strength, but ultimately leads to homogeneous formulations. Aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of aluminium hydroxide and borates, separately or combined with ammonium polyphosphate (APP), upon the technological and fire properties of medium density fibreboard (MDF). Fire resistant MDF was fabricated in the laboratory from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) fibres bonded with a high molar ratio melamine-urea-formaldehyde resin. Overall, 24 h-swelling and water absorption properties of the treated boards were improved or remained unchanged compared to untreated ones. On the contrary, the internal bond strength (IB) of the fibreboards was significantly reduced up to 48%. The fire properties of the fibreboards were assessed by the determination of limiting oxygen index and cone calorimetry. As expected, the tested fire-retardants improved the fire resistance of the boards. Furthermore, the combination of aluminium hydroxide with ammonium polyphosphate considerably upgraded the fire retardancy while the incorporation of borates into APP showed much weaker effects. Immunization is the key to prevent invasive meningococcal disease (IMD), caused by Neisseria meningitidis. Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) can be used as meningococcal antigens. Isogenic mice A/Sn (H2a) were immunized with low antigenic doses of OMVs of an N. meningitidis C:2a:P1.5 strain, via intranasal/intramuscular route, adjuvanted by cholera toxin subunit B (CTB) or via intramuscular route only, adjuvanted by aluminium hydroxide (AH). Mice were followed until old age and humoral and cellular responses were assessed by ELISA, Immunoblotting, Dot-blot, Serum-bactericidal assay, Immunohistochemistry and ELISpot. OMV+CTB and OMV+AH groups presented statistically higher antibodies titers, which persisted until middle and old ages. IgG isotypes point to a Th2 type of response. Avidity indexes were considered high, regardless of adjuvant use, but only groups immunized with OMVs and adjuvants (OMV+CTB and OMV+AH) presented bactericidal activity. The antibodies recognized antigens of molecular weights attributed to porin and cross-reactivity proteins. Although the spleen of old mice did not present differences in immunohistochemistry marking of CD68+, CD4+, CD79+ and CD25+ cells, splenocytes of immune groups secreted IL-4 and IL-17 when stimulated with OMVs and meningococcal C polysaccharide. We concluded that both adjuvants, CTB and AH, improved the immunogenicity of low doses of OMVs and contributed to a persistent immune response. Even though AH is well established in the vaccinology area, CTB seems to be a promising adjuvant candidate for meningococcal vaccines: it is suitable for mucosal delivery and supports a Th2 type of response. Safety and potency assessment for batch release testing of established vaccines still relies partly on animal tests. An important avenue to move to batch release without animal testing is the consistency approach. This approach is based on thorough characterization of the vaccine to identify critical quality attributes that inform the use of a comprehensive set of non-animal tests to release the vaccine, together with the principle that the quality of subsequent batches follows from their consistent production. Many vaccine antigens are by themselves not able to induce a protective immune response. The antigens are therefore administered together with adjuvant, most often by adsorption to aluminium salts. Adjuvant function is an important component of vaccine potency, and an important quality attribute of the final product. Aluminium adjuvants are capable of inducing NLRP3 inflammasome activation. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate an in vitro assay for NLRP3 inflammasome activation by aluminium-adjuvanted vaccines. We evaluated the effects of Diphtheria-Tetanus-acellular Pertussis combination vaccines from two manufacturers and their respective adjuvants, aluminium phosphate (AP) and aluminium hydroxide (AH), in an in vitro assay for NLRP3 inflammasome activation. All vaccines and adjuvants tested showed a dose-dependent increase in IL-1β production and a concomitant decrease in cell viability, suggesting NLRP3 inflammasome activation. The results were analysed by benchmark dose modelling, showing a similar 50% effective dose (ED50) for the two vaccine batches and corresponding adjuvant of manufacturer A (AP), and a similar ED50 for the two vaccine batches and corresponding adjuvant of manufacturer B (AH). This suggests that NLRP3 inflammasome activation is determined by the adjuvant only. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles reduced the adjuvant biological activity of AH, but not AP. The meningococcal disease is a global health threat, but is preventable through vaccination. Adjuvants improve meningococcal vaccines and are able to trigger different aspects of the immune response. The present work evaluated the immune response of mice against Neisseria meningitidis outer membrane vesicles (OMV) complexed with the adjuvants aluminium hydroxide (AH), via subcutaneous route; and dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (DDA) or Saponin (Sap), via intranasal/subcutaneous routes. ELISA demonstrated that all adjuvants increased IgG titers after the booster dose, remaining elevated for 18 months. Additionally, adjuvants increased the avidity of the antibodies and the bactericidal titer: OMVs alone were bactericidal until 1:4 dilution but, when adjuvanted by Alum, DDA or Sap, it increased to 1/32. DDA and Sap increased all IgG isotypes, while AH improved IgG1 and IgG2a levels. Thus, Sap led to the recognition of more proteins in Immunoblot, followed by DDA and AH. Sap and AH induced higher IL-4 and IL-17 release, respectively. The use of adjuvants improved both cellular and humoral immune response, however, each adjuvant contributed to particular parameters. Aluminium hydroxide (ATH) filled silicone rubber working in a wide temperature range has to experience the crystallization process in many cases, in which mechanical properties would change greatly and its safety operation is threatened. In this paper, the structure-tensile properties relationship study of ATH filled silicone rubber from melting to crystallized state was carried out. By the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS), it was found that ATH promoted heterogeneous nucleation in silicone rubber. With the increase of ATH, the proportion of rigid amorphous phase decreases. Meanwhile, the over doped ATH reduces the perfection of crystals during isothermal crystallization at −60 °C. Consequently, the elongation at break of high-content ATH filled silicone rubber with less crystalline and rigid amorphous phase dropped sharply by about 97% due to the failure of lamellae slips, which should arouse great attention for safety operation of ATH filled silicone rubber. It is thereby suggested to take the elongation at break as one of the criteria for the selection of ATH filled silicone rubber used in extremely low temperature.

The subject of this paper was the study of antimicrobial capacity of silver loaded on the low temperature activated alumina products and evaluation of these products as decontaminants in the water and waste waters decontamination treatments. The low temperature activated alumina products have been characterized as valuable adsorbents in previous papers. So, by reason the next step to investigate these silver loaded products and finding their performaces as antimicrobial agents was an alluring prospect. For this purpose, a common bacterian inoculus was choosen for experiments, and a penmisive method to measure the rate of inhibition was adopted. Experimental data have shown the dependence of the inhibition rate on the following parameters concerning the adsorbent properties: the thermal treatments, particle size dimension of adsorbent (low temperature activated alumina products), concentration of siver adsorbed on particle surface and density of bioreactive centers, representing the number of particles on unit volume of the liquid containing the bacterial cells. Also, the experiments lay out that the aluminum hydroxide calcined at 300 and 400ºC exibits the largest silver adsorbed concentration and the highest inhibition rate (close to 100%). Little dependence of inhibition rate on pH, in the interval 5.0 – 8.0, was observed. For application of depolluting agent in diferent technological processes, it is necesary to measure the minimum inhibitory concentration in therms of g of silver loaded on the low temperature activated alumina /L. • Eutectic PCMs/ER/ATH/EG-based composite PCMs are synthesized. • ER/ATH/EG ternary enhanced the flame retardancy and UL-94 of eutectic PCMs. • ATH maintained high mechanical and heat transfer performance of the composite PCMs. • ATH exhibited enhancements in thermal reliability and stability of the composite PCMs. In the present research, a novel approach wherein a flame-retardant composite phase change material (PCMs) is devised by incorporating eutectic PCMs, epoxy resin (ER), aluminium hydroxide (ATH), and expanded graphite (EG). This innovative formulation capitalizes on the synergistic interaction between ER and ATH, alongside the porous structure of EG, resulting in a triple-layer encapsulation of the eutectic PCMs. The outcome of this formulation is marked by remarkable thermal stability, even under extreme conditions such as exposure to temperatures as high as 800 °C. Notably, one of the representative samples, denoted as S5, showcases impressive attributes with a thermal conductivity of 1.335 W∙m-1K−1 and a substantial phase change latent heat of 150.4 J∙g−1. It was observed an increase in latent heat up to 181.3 J∙g−1 after 100 heating–cooling cycles of composite PCMs. This indicates the good thermal reliability of the form-stable composite PCMs synthesized. Moreover, the composite PCMs exhibit outstanding mechanical properties, especially S5 which showed a 14.69 % and 400.12 % increase in compression strength and compression modulus compared with pure eutectic PCM (S0), respectively. Besides, the ternary composition of ER, ATH, and EG enhances the flame retardancy of the composite PCMs, yielding a substantial reduction of 67.33 % in peak heat release rate and 50.38 % in total heat release. This collaborative effect also establishes a robust defense mechanism against the rapid propagation of flames, as exemplified by the attainment of a V-0 rating in the UL-94 test. As a result, the flame-retardant ER/ATH/EG ternary-based form-stable composite PCM presents itself as a promising candidate for ensuring both safety and efficiency in thermal management applications. Aluminum hydroxide is a key product for the industrial production of alumiana and aluminium, ceramics insulator and refractories, desiccants, absorbents, flame retardants, filers for plastics and rubbers, catalysts, and various construction materials. The production of these arrays of useful material products is grounded on the multiple thermal decomposition pathways of Al(OH)3, which involve major crystallographic dislocations and many microstructure reconfigurations on variable lines of phase transitions, from the raw material up to large varieties of precursors and commercial grade products. A wide range of literature on this subject is available, and recent reviews cover suitable information about preparation and characterization of different activated alumina products with specific properties and applications. In our previous papers, there was studied the mechanisms of aluminum hydroxide phase transitions, during low temperature calcination, namely, at 260ºC, 300ºC, 400ºC and 600 ºC, under chosen particularly conditions, for promoting the nucleation of the amorphous phases. Collected data suggest that raw aluminum hydroxide; dried, milled and classified is a precursor for the new low temperature activated alumina transition phases, carrying distinctive characteristics and properties, due to products enrichment in amorphous phases. Accordingly, as effects of the main driving factors (temperature and rate of heating, and initial particle size dimension) on the aluminum hydroxide as new precursor, notable changes were observed in products mineral composition, morphology and specific surface area, pore size, pore distribution, and the particle size distribution. Beside, some other secondary effects have to be apprehended. For example, the main phase transition process dinamic factors control over some physical and technical properties of the new products, like: absolute density, brightness, oil absorption capacity and water absorption capacity. The purpose of this work was to continue the characterization of low temperature activation alumina products, and also, to measure the adsorption capacity and to reveal adsorption kinetics mechanisms. Thus, the first step of survey was silver adsorption maximum capacity measurements for all sample prepared by heating the precursor alumina hydroxide, milled and classified as 5 different dimension size fractions to 260, 300, 400 and 600ºC. Hereinafter, four samples, carefully selected as representative for the entire lot of samples, were used for the study of kinetics mechanism and data fitting to the adequate kinetic equations. Confident data validate the pseudo second order kinetic model for the entire activation process, independently of samples heating temperature and particles dimension. Environment-friendly and cost-effective adsorbent is necessary for removal of excess fluoride from water to control the spread of fluorosis among people in fluoride-rich area. Plant-based cellulosic materials are the preferred choice for this purpose. In this work, aluminium hydroxide impregnated sawdust (AHSD) adsorbent has been prepared, characterized and applied for defluoridation of water through batch and fixed-bed adsorption. Fluoride adsorption capacity of AHSD in batch adsorption experiment is 4.45 mg/g for the initial fluoride concentration between 5-50 mg/L. At low fluoride concentration, the Freundlich isotherm model fit reasonably well, while at higher fluoride concentration (> 40 mg/L) the Langmuir model show better fitting with the experimental data. The adsorption kinetics follow pseudo second-order kinetic model. In fixedbed column adsorption, 4 g of the adsorbent is capable of bringing down the fluoride concentration from 5 mg/L to < 1.5 mg/L (WHO limit) for 690 mL of contaminated water. Residual aluminium in the treated water was within permissible limit of WHO. The reasonably good adsorption capacity and effectivity in both batch and fixed-bed column adsorption suggests that AHSD is an environment-friendly, cost-effective and promising adsorbent for defluoridation of water. In this study a novel activated carbon derived from Raffia palm shells was synthesized firstly by activating the precursor with phosphoric acid to produce Raffia Palm Shell Activated Carbon (RPSAC) and further functionalized by coating its surface with aluminium hydroxide to produce a composite called Aluminium Oxide-coated Raffia Palm Shell Activated Carbon (ACRPSAC). These adsorbents were extensively characterized and tested for fluoride adsorption in aqueous media using batch adsorption experiment in comparison with a commercially available activated carbon (CAC). ACRPSAC demonstrated excellent qualities and fluoride adsorption capacity as compared to RPSAC. SEM/EDX revealed that ACRPSAC developed both micro and meso-pores on its surface with BET-surface area and pore volume of 715.80 m2/g and 0.47 cm3/g respectively. FTIR and XRD proved that ACRPSAC was largely amorphous and had sufficient functionality for fluoride uptake in solution. Batch adsorption studies showed that the fluoride removal abilities were in the order of ACRPSAC > RPSAC > CAC with maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of 4.10 > 2.26 > 2.24 mg/g. respectively. The experimental data was well described by the Langmuir (R2 = 0.8802–0.9751) and the pseudo-second order kinetic (R2 = 0.9974–0.9999) models, signifying that fluoride uptake by the adsorbents was a chemisorption process. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the process was spontaneous, endothermic and feasible for ACRPSAC and RPSAC but was non-spontaneous for CAC. It was concluded that ACRPSAC is an excellent activated carbon for eliminating fluoride from groundwater and can be further studied for its commercialization.

Although aluminium-based vaccines have been used for almost over a century, their mechanism of action remains unclear. It is established that antigen adsorption to the adjuvant facilitates delivery of the antigen to immune cells at the injection site. To further increase our understanding of aluminium-based vaccines, it is important to gain additional insights on the interactions between the aluminium and antigens, including antigen distribution over the adjuvant particles. Immuno-assays can further help in this regard. In this paper, we evaluated how established formulation strategies (i.e., sequential, competitive, and separate antigen addition) applied to four different antigens and aluminium oxyhydroxide, lead to formulation changes over time. Results showed that all formulation samples were stable, and that no significant changes were observed in terms of physical-chemical properties. Antigen distribution across the bulk aluminium population, however, did show a maturation effect, with some initial dependence on the formulation approach and the antigen adsorption strength. Sequential and competitive approaches displayed similar results in terms of the homogeneity of antigen distribution across aluminium particles, while separately adsorbed antigens were initially more highly poly-dispersed. Nevertheless, the formulation sample prepared via separate adsorption also reached homogeneity according to each antigen adsorption strength. This study indicated that antigen distribution across aluminium particles is a dynamic feature that evolves over time, which is initially influenced by the formulation approach and the specific adsorption strength, but ultimately leads to homogeneous formulations.

The meningococcal disease is a global health threat, but is preventable through vaccination. Adjuvants improve meningococcal vaccines and are able to trigger different aspects of the immune response. The present work evaluated the immune response of mice against Neisseria meningitidis outer membrane vesicles (OMV) complexed with the adjuvants aluminium hydroxide (AH), via subcutaneous route; and dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (DDA) or Saponin (Sap), via intranasal/subcutaneous routes. ELISA demonstrated that all adjuvants increased IgG titers after the booster dose, remaining elevated for 18 months. Additionally, adjuvants increased the avidity of the antibodies and the bactericidal titer: OMVs alone were bactericidal until 1:4 dilution but, when adjuvanted by Alum, DDA or Sap, it increased to 1/32. DDA and Sap increased all IgG isotypes, while AH improved IgG1 and IgG2a levels. Thus, Sap led to the recognition of more proteins in Immunoblot, followed by DDA and AH. Sap and AH induced higher IL-4 and IL-17 release, respectively. The use of adjuvants improved both cellular and humoral immune response, however, each adjuvant contributed to particular parameters. This demonstrates the importance of studying different adjuvant options and their suitability to stimulate different immune mechanisms, modulating the immune response.

Aluminium salts have been used in vaccines for decades. However, the mechanisms underlying their adjuvant effect are still unclear. Neutrophils, the first immune cells at the injection site, can release cellular DNA together with granular material, so‐called neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). In mice, NETs apparently play a role in aluminium hydroxide (alum)‐adjuvant immune response to vaccines. Although no experimental data exist, this effect is assumed to be operative also in humans. As a first step to verify this knowledge in humans, we demonstrate that the injection of alum particles into human skin biopsies ex vivo leads to similar tissue infiltration of neutrophils and NET‐formation. Moreover, we characterized the mechanism leading to alum‐induced NET‐release in human neutrophils as rapid, NADPH oxidase‐independent process involving charge, phagocytosis, phagolysosomal rupture, Ca2+‐flux, hyperpolarization of the mitochondrial membrane, and mitochondrial ROS. Extracellular flow and inhibition experiments suggested that no additional energy from oxidative phosphorylation or glycolysis is required for NET‐release. This study suggests a so far unappreciated role for neutrophils in the initial phase of immune responses to alum‐containing vaccines in humans and provides novel insights into bioenergetic requirements of NET‐formation. Imbibition of lithium sulphate into aluminium hydroxide is known to result in a sulphate-intercalated layered double hydroxide (LDH) of Li and Al. The perchlorate ion has the same size and molecular symmetry as the sulphate ion, but only half its charge. Consequently, twice the number of ClO 4 - ions is needed to balance LDHs the charge on the metal hydroxide layer, compared to the SO 4 2 - ions. In this work, the ClO 4 - -intercalated LDHs were obtained from both the bayerite and gibbsite precursors. Inclusion of the hydration sphere along with the ClO 4 - anion, induced turbostratic disorder in the stacking of the metal hydroxide layers. Temperature-induced dehydration ( T ∼ 100 – 140 ∘ C ) brought about a partial ordering in the interlayer region and the ClO 4 - ion oriented itself with one of its C 2 -axes parallel to the metal hydroxide layer. The close packing of ClO 4 - ions could be realized by the complete dehydration of LDH and the distribution of the ClO 4 - ions in all the available interlayer sites. In contrast, within the crystal of the sulphate analogue, the sulphate ions occupy only half the number of interlayer sites. The other half is occupied by the residual water molecules, as the sulphate analogue does not fully dehydrate even at elevated temperatures. This difference in the behaviour of the two LDHs has its origin in the large difference in the hydration enthalpies of the two anions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aluminium hydroxide nanosheets (nAl) loaded with doxorubicin (DOX) and zoledronic acid (ZA) to enhance osteosarcoma therapy through macrophage modulation. [Display omitted] Chemotherapy in osteosarcoma treatment has long been stagnating, leaving challenges in the treatment of patients with metastatic and recurrent osteosarcoma. Modulation of macrophages in the tumour microenvironment offers great opportunities to elicit a durable antitumour effect. Here, we employed aluminium hydroxide nanosheets (nAl) to co-deliver the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin (DOX) and immune modulator zoledronic acid (ZA). The hexagon nAl was obtained by a facile approach, with a high positive surface charge for the loading of ZA. With 37% and 8.5% payloads to ZA and DOX, the formed nAl/ZD showed efficient cell growth inhibition to LM8 osteosarcoma cells, and preferential M1 polarization induction to RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Furthermore, enhanced antitumour effect was observed with nAl/ZD-enabled macrophage activation in the LM8/RAW 264.7 co-culture model. A simple preconcentration method for zirconium based on coprecipitation with aluminium hydroxide prior to flame atomic absorption (FAAS) determination was established. The recovery values of the analyte ions were higher than 95%. Such parameters as the type of hydroxide ion source for precipitation, type of acid for the dissolution step, amount of Al3+ ion as the collector, pH, temperature, standing time and centrifuge time were optimized using 50 mL of a solution containing 150 μg of zirconium. The effect of the solution volume and influences of matrix ions on the extraction of the analyte were also examined. Under the optimum conditions, the calibration curve was linear up to 10 mg L−1. The relative standard deviation for solutions containing 150 μg of zirconium was found to be 3.9%. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) were calculated as 0.17 and 0.57 mg L−1, respectively. The method is capable of extracting the analyte in different samples with volumes of up to 250 mL. The preconcentration factor for 250 mL and enhancement factor for 50 mL of analyte solution were calculated to be 250 and 40, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied for the determination of zirconium in glass and refractory brick samples.

In this study, aluminium hydro(oxide), AO was prepared from locally available aluminium sulfate, and used for fluoride removal from water by combining with Nalgonda Technique. The fluoride removal performance of the combined process was investigated as a function of contact time, proportion of alum-lime/AO dose, initial fluoride concentration and solution pH in series of batch experiments. The rate of fluoride removal was investigated using conventional kinetic models. The fluoride removal efficiency of the combined process was also tested for real water sample from selected community water supply system in the Rift Valley Region of Ethiopia. The removal of fluoride was rapid in the first 15 min. The combined process efficiency was about 93% with an optimum combined alum/AO dose (80 mg alum/mg F, 5 mg AO/mg F and lime = 35% of alum) using initial fluoride concentration of 15 mg/L. The optimum solution pH for fluoride removal was in the range of 5-9, which is suitable for practical application in the Ethiopia Rift Valley Region. Kinetic studies showed that the rate of fluoride removal by alum/AO can be well described by a pseudo-second-order rate equation with an average rate constant of 0.096 g/min.mg. The optimum dose required to attain 85-93% fluoride removal efficiency from real water sample was 90 mg alum/mg F, 5 mg AO/mg F, and 15% lime. Hence, the combined defluoridation process has higher fluoride removal efficiency than the Nalgonda Technique with an additional advantage of minimizing chemical dose. The reported removal efficiency of Nalgonda Technique is 70% at alum dose of 150-170 mg alum/mg F. Besides, sludge production is also minimized. Therefore, this process is highly efficient and could be applied in areas where the fluoride concentration is higher than 10 mg/L, both at household and community level.

Silica derived from sol-gel approach was used as co-filler in aluminium hydroxide (ATH) or hydromagnesite (HM) ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) formulations. In this bottom-up approach, the silica network is formed inside the extruder in a first process step. The 3D silica structure is investigated by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) spectroscopy and a combined TGA-FTIR analysis revealing a partially incomplete reaction to form silica particles. In addition, 29Si CPMAS NMR showed the formation of chemical Si–C bonds between EVA and silica networks. The performance enhancement of the fire retardant properties was established by comparing with composites prepared by a top-down approach, i.e by adding preformed silica. It is confirmed that the preformed silica acts as a synergistic agent with both ATH or HM, increasing the flame retardant properties (limiting oxygen index, UL-94 and cone calorimeter tests) of EVA composites, however, the sol-gel silica shows the best performances in reducing both heat release and smoke production. The role of the sol-gel structure was deeply investigated in correlation with combustion test. • EVA-based flame retarded composites have been successfully prepared with silica as co-filler. • Silica formed in-situ during the extrusion process is compared with preformed silica. • NMR spectroscopy shows that the sol-gel silica lattice is not completely condensed and it reacts with the polymer. • Preformed and in-situ prepared silica does not lead to any change in the polymer degradation mechanism. • In-situ formed silica based composite forms a consistent and compact residue with better flame retardant properties. Abstract This work presents a facile fabrication method for vertical polymerised structures with a tuned superhydrophobic surface on an aluminium alloy. This method includes vertically polymerising heptadecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetra-hydrodecyltrichlorosilane (HDFS), which is used for self-assembled monolayer (SAM) coatings, wherein vertical polymerisation is normally considered a process defect. For fabricating the base structure, aluminium hydroxide was generated to form a nanostructure. HDFS was coated as an SAM and microflake fabrication was carried out on this surface for various lengths of time. Microflakes were fabricated by vertical polymerisation of HDFS through this process. Samples coated for 10–30 min showed the water contact angle ( θ C ) of >168.3° and the lowest water sliding angle ( θ S ) of <11.8°. After 30 min, the water droplet clung to the microstructure that increased in size beyond 1 μm, thereby increasing of θ S . This micro/nano dual-scale-flake surface was achieved without any hazardous etching processes and can be facilely applied in various industrial fields that require superhydrophobic surfaces. In this study, a mechanochemical route to promote the adsorption of the precursor of Zn-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) was introduced, in which ZnO and SiO 2 were added to Zn basic carbonate and Al hydroxide that were first dry milled into an activated state as a precursor for a LDH phase. The samples prepared in this way were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The precursors showed a high adsorption rate when added with the oxides. 10% addition of ZnO gave a maximum MO removal efficiency of 96.91% (193.82 mg/g at initial MO concentration of 160 mg/L), 16.46% higher than the sample without addition. Addition of SiO 2 at 25% allowed MO removal efficiency reaching 88.90% (222.25 mg/g, at initial MO concentration of 200 mg/L), 19.26% higher than the no additive sample. The improvement in the adsorption performance could be attributed to the effective dispersion of the precursor's agglomeration phenomenon. Summary: This study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of in ovo administration of aluminium hydroxide (AH) and/or mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) adjuvants along with lentogenic VG/GA strain‐Avinew to alleviate the embryonic pathogenicity of Newcastle disease virus. Six hundred and thirty fertilized Bovans eggs were divided into nine groups of 70 each incubated in a commercial hatchery and administered with eight types of in ovo injections in a factorial design of 2 × 2 × 2 including with/without AH, MOS and Newcastle disease vaccine (NDV), and one uninjected group on day 18 of incubation. Hatchability was higher in the eggs received MOS and/or AH adjuvants plus NDV compared those injected with NDV alone which confirmed the attenuation of NDV. However, the average daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio of pullets hatched from NDV‐injected eggs were significantly reduced, but did not affect growth performance during 0‐42 days of age. The performance of pullets hatched from eggs injected with AH, MOS or their mixture with NDV was not significantly different during all growth periods. Pullets from MOS + vaccine injected eggs had significantly higher antibody titres against NDV compared to those hatched from either injected with saline or uninjected on d 28 (p < .05). In addition, AH plus vaccine and MOS significantly improved total anti‐SRBC and IgG respectively. Histological observation revealed that injection of MOS adjuvant into eggs led to increase crypt depth, whereas AH injection caused a reduction in villus surface area of jejunum in chicks on d 14 post‐hatch. It is concluded that in ovo MOS injection as compared to AH may be more effective to attenuate the embryonic pathogenicity of in ovo NDV injection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the combination of organomodified montmorillonite (MMT), magnesium hydroxide (MDH), graphene oxide (GO) and expandable graphite (EG) as intumescent flame retardant for Linear Low-Density Polyethylene-Cyclo-Olefin Copolymer (LLDPE/COC) blends has been investigated. An amine-alcohol modified polyethylene (PEgDMAE) was used as compatibilizer. Limiting oxygen index (LOI), cone calorimeter determinations and flammability test (Underwriters Laboratory - UL-94) were used to evaluate the flame retardant properties. The structural characterization was measured by FTIR and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mechanical properties were also evaluated by Dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMA). The PEgDMAE compatibilizer enhanced the filler dispersion and increased the LOI to 22% for clay, 23% for GO and 26.5% for EG composites. The results indicated that the combination of each additive makes it possible to reduce the total Magnesium hydroxide filler content from 55 to 20% to achieve the flame retardant requirements. The flame retardant and mechanical properties of LLDPE/COC blends increased to a higher extent when using the combination of these additive fillers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
