We explore how to mitigate the clustering distortions in Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) samples caused by the miss-identification of the Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) wavelength in their Ly$\alpha$ line profiles. We use the Ly$\alpha$ line profiles from our previous LAE theoretical model that includes radiative transfer in the interstellar and intergalactic mediums. We introduce a novel approach to measure the systemic redshift of LAEs from their Ly$\alpha$ line using neural networks. In detail, we assume that, for a fraction of the whole LAE population their systemic redshift is determined precisely through other spectral features. We then use this subset to train a neural network that predicts the Ly$\alpha$ wavelength given a Ly$\alpha$ line profile. We test two different training sets: i) the LAEs are selected homogeneously and ii) only the brightest LAEs are selected. In comparison with previous approaches in the literature, our methodology improves significantly both accuracy and precision in determining the Ly$\alpha$ wavelength. In fact, after applying our algorithm in ideal Ly$\alpha$ line profiles, we recover the clustering unperturbed down to 1cMpc/h. Then, we test the performance of our methodology in realistic Ly$\alpha$ line profiles by downgrading their quality. The machine learning techniques work well even if the Ly$\alpha$ line profile quality is decreased considerably. We conclude that LAE surveys such as HETDEX would benefit from determining with high accuracy the systemic redshift of a subpopulation and applying our methodology to estimate the systemic redshift of the rest of the galaxy sample., Comment: 24 Pages, 16 figures, a lot of fun

The presence of neutral hydrogen in the inter-stellar medium (ISM) and inter-galactic medium (IGM) induces radiative transfer (RT) effects on Ly α photons which affect the observability of Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs). We use the GALFORM semi-analytic model of galaxy formation and evolution to analyse how these effects shape the spatial distribution of LAEs with respect to H α emitters (HAEs) around high density regions at high redshift. We find that when a large sample of protoclusters is considered, HAEs showing also Ly α emission (HAEs+LAEs) populate the same regions as those that do not display the Ly α line at z = 2.2. We compare against the protocluster USS1558-003, one of the most massive protoclusters located at z = 2.53. Our results indicate that the strong depletion of HAEs + LAEs present in the high density regions of USS1558-003 may be due to cosmic variance. We find that at z = 2.2 and z = 3.0, RT of the ISM produces a strong decline (30-50 per cent) of the clustering amplitude of HAEs + LAEs with respect to HAEs towards the protoclusters centre. At z = 5.7, given the early evolutionary state of protoclusters and galaxies, the clustering of HAEs + LAEs has a smaller variation (10-20 per cent) towards the protoclusters centre. M.; Santos da Costa, S.; Telles, E., The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) will scan thousands of square degrees of the northern sky with a unique set of 56 filters using the dedicated 2:55m Javalambre Survey Telescope (JST) at the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory. Prior to the installation of the main camera (4:2 deg2 field-of-view with 1.2 Gpixels), the JST was equipped with the JPAS-Pathfinder, a one CCD camera with a 0:3 deg2 field-of-view and plate scale of 0.23 arcsec pixel?1. To demonstrate the scientific potential of J-PAS, the JPAS-Pathfinder camera was used to perform miniJPAS, a _1 deg2 survey of the AEGIS field (along the Extended Groth Strip). The field was observed with the 56 J-PAS filters, which include 54 narrow band (FWHM _ 145 ) and two broader filters extending to the UV and the near-infrared, complemented by the u; g; r; i SDSS broad band filters. In this miniJPAS survey overview paper, we present the miniJPAS data set (images and catalogs), as we highlight key aspects and applications of these unique spectro-photometric data and describe how to access the public data products. The data parameters reach depths of magAB ' 22?23:5 in the 54 narrow band filters and up to 24 in the broader filters (5_ in a 300 aperture). The miniJPAS primary catalog contains more than 64 000 sources detected in the r band and with matched photometry in all other bands. This catalog is 99% complete at r = 23:6 (r = 22:7) mag for point-like (extended) sources. We show that our photometric redshifts have an accuracy better than 1% for all sources up to r = 22:5, and a precision of _0:3% for a subset consisting of about half of the sample. On this basis, we outline several scientific applications of our data, including the study of spatially-resolved stellar populations of nearby galaxies, the analysis of the large scale structure up to z _ 0:9, and the detection of large numbers of clusters and groups. Sub-percent redshift precision can also be reached for quasars, allowing for the study of the large-scale structure to be pushed to z 2. The miniJPAS survey demonstrates the capability of the J-PAS filter system to accurately characterize a broad variety of sources and paves the way for the upcoming arrival of J-PAS, which will multiply this data by three orders of magnitude. © 2021 EDP Sciences. The next generation of spectroscopic surveys will target emission-line galaxies (ELGs) to produce constraints on cosmological parameters. We study the large scale structure traced by ELGs using a combination of a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation, a code that computes the nebular emission from HII regions using the properties of the interstellar medium, and a large-volume, high-resolution N-body simulation. We consider fixed number density samples where galaxies are selected by either their H$\alpha$, [OIII]$\lambda 5007$ or [OII]$\lambda \lambda 3727-3729$ emission line luminosities. We investigate the assembly bias signatures of these samples, and compare them to those of stellar mass and SFR selected samples. Interestingly, we find that the [OIII]- and [OII]-selected samples display scale-dependent bias on large scales and that their assembly bias signatures are also scale-dependent. Both these effects are more pronounced for lower number density samples. The [OIII] and [OII] emitters that contribute most to the scale dependence tend to have a low gas-phase metallicity and are preferentially found in low-density regions. We also measure the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature and the $\beta$ parameter related to the growth rate of overdensities. We find a slight tendency for the BAO peak to shift toward smaller scales for [OII] emitters and that $\beta$ is scale-dependent at large scales. Our results suggest that ELG samples include environmental effects that should be modelled in order to remove potential systematic errors that could affect the estimation of cosmological parameters., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

Galaxy surveys aim to map the large-scale structure of the Universe and use redshift space distortions to constrain deviations from general relativity and probe the existence of massive neutrinos. However, the amount of information that can be extracted is limited by the accuracy of theoretical models used to analyze the data. Here, by using the L-Galaxies semi-analytical model run over the MXXL N-body simulation, we assess the impact of galaxy formation on satellite kinematics and the theoretical modelling of redshift-space distortions. We show that different galaxy selection criteria lead to noticeable differences in the radial distributions and velocity structure of satellite galaxies. Specifically, whereas samples of stellar mass selected galaxies feature satellites that roughly follow the dark matter, emission line satellite galaxies are located preferentially in the outskirts of halos and display net infall velocities. We demonstrate that capturing these differences is crucial for modelling the multipoles of the correlation function in redshift space, even on large scales. In particular, we show how modelling small scale velocities with a single Gaussian distribution leads to a poor description of the measure clustering. In contrast, we propose a parametrization that is flexible enough to model the satellite kinematics, and that leads to and accurate description of the correlation function down to sub-Mpc scales. We anticipate that our model will be a necessary ingredient in improved theoretical descriptions of redshift space distortions, which together could result in significantly tighter cosmological constraints and a more optimal exploitation of future large datasets., 16 pages, 15 figures, typos corrected and moderate revision after referee report

Emission line galaxies (ELGs) are used in several ongoing and upcoming surveys as tracers of the dark matter distribution. Using a new galaxy formation model, we explore the characteristics of [O II] emitters, which dominate optical ELG selections at z ≃ 1. Model [O II] emitters at 0.5 < z < 1.5 are selected to mimic the DEEP2, VVDS, eBOSS and DESI surveys. The luminosity functions of model [O II] emitters are in reasonable agreement with observations. The selected [O II] emitters are hosted by haloes with Mhalo≥1010.3h−1M⊙, with ∼90% of them being central star-forming galaxies. The predicted mean halo occupation distributions of [O II] emitters has a shape typical of that inferred for star-forming galaxies, with the contribution from central galaxies, ⟨N⟩[O II],cen, being far from the canonical step function. The ⟨N⟩[O II],cen can be described as the sum of an asymmetric Gaussian for disks and a step function for spheroids, which plateaus below unity. The model [O II] emitters have a clustering bias close to unity, which is below the expectations for eBOSS and DESI ELGs. At z∼1, a comparison with observed g-band selected galaxy, which are expected to be dominated by [O II] emitters, indicates that our model produces too few [O II] emitters that are satellite galaxies. This suggests the need to revise our modelling of hot gas stripping in satellite galaxies.

In the near future galaxy surveys will target Lyman alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) to unveil the nature of the dark energy. It has been suggested that the observability of LAEs is coupled to the large scale properties of the intergalactic medium. Such coupling could introduce distortions into the observed clustering of LAEs, adding a new potential difficulty to the interpretation of upcoming surveys. We present a model of LAEs that incorporates Lyman-alpha radiative transfer processes in the interstellar and intergalactic medium. The model is implemented in the GALFORM semi-analytic model of galaxy of formation and evolution. We find that the radiative transfer inside galaxies produces selection effects over galaxy properties. In particular, observed LAEs tend to have low metallicities and intermediate star formation rates. At low redshift we find no evidence of a correlation between the spatial distribution of LAEs and the intergalactic medium properties. However, at high redshift the LAEs are linked to the line of sight velocity and density gradient of the intergalactic medium. The strength of the coupling depends on the outflow properties of the galaxies and redshift. This effect modifies the clustering of LAEs on large scales, adding non linear features. In particular, our model predicts modifications to the shape and position of the baryon acoustic oscillation peak. We present a synthetic galaxy lightcone specially designed for narrow-band optical photometric surveys. To reduce time-discreteness effects, unlike previous works, we directly include the lightcone construction in the \texttt{L-Galaxies} semi-analytic model applied to the subhalo merger trees of the {\tt Millennium} simulation. Additionally, we add a model for the nebular emission in star-forming regions, which is crucial for correctly predicting the narrow/medium-band photometry of galaxies. Explicitly, we consider, individually for each galaxy, the contribution of 9 different lines: $\rm Ly{\alpha}$ (1216\AA), \Hb (4861\AA), \Ha (6563\AA), {\oii} (3727\AA, 3729\AA), {\oiii} (4959\AA, 5007\AA), $\rm [\ion{Ne}{III}]$ (3870\AA), {\oi} (6300\AA), $\rm [\ion{N}{II}]$ (6548\AA, 6583\AA), and $\rm [\ion{S}{II}]$ (6717\AA, 6731\AA). We validate our lightcone by comparing galaxy number counts, angular clustering, and \Ha, \Hb, {\oii} and {\oiiiFd} luminosity functions to a compilation of observations. As an application of our mock lightcones, we generate catalogues tailored for J-PLUS, a large optical galaxy survey featuring 5 broad and 7 medium band filters. We study the ability of the survey to correctly identify, with a simple \textit{three filter method}, a population of emission-line galaxies at various redshifts. We show that the $4000\AA$ break in the spectral energy distribution of galaxies can be misidentified as line emission. However, all significant excess (larger than 0.4 magnitudes) can be correctly and unambiguously attributed to emission line galaxies. Lyman-{\alpha} emitters (LAEs) are a promising target to probe the large scale structure of the Universe at high redshifts, $z\gtrsim 2$. However, their detection is sensitive to radiative transfer effects that depend on local astrophysical conditions. Thus, modeling the bulk properties of this galaxy population remains challenging for theoretical models. Here we develop a physically-motivated scheme to predict LAEs in cosmological simulations. The escape of Ly{\alpha} photons is computed using a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code which outputs a Ly{\alpha} escape fraction. To speed-up the process of assigning escape fractions to individual galaxies, we employ fitting formulae that approximate the full Monte Carlo results within an accuracy of 10% for a broad range of column densities, gas metallicities and gas bulk velocities. We apply our methodology to the semi-analytical model GALFORM on a large N-body simulation. The Ly{\alpha} photons escape through an outflowing neutral gas medium, implemented assuming different geometries. This results in different predictions for the typical column density and outflow velocities of the LAE population. To understand the impact of radiative transfer on our predictions, we contrast our models against a simple abundance matching assignment. Our full models populate LAEs in less massive haloes than what is obtained with abundance matching. Overall, radiative transfer effects result in better agreement when confronting the properties of LAEs against observational measurements. This suggest that incorporating the effects of Ly{\alpha} radiative transfer in the analysis of this galaxy population, including their clustering, can be important for obtaining an unbiased interpretation of future datasets., Comment: 25 pages, 18 figures. Our goal is to morphologically classify the sources identified in the images of the J-PLUS early data release (EDR) into compact (stars) or extended (galaxies) using a suited Bayesian classifier. J-PLUS sources exhibit two distinct populations in the r-band magnitude vs. concentration plane, corresponding to compact and extended sources. We modelled the two-population distribution with a skewed Gaussian for compact objects and a log-normal function for the extended ones. The derived model and the number density prior based on J-PLUS EDR data were used to estimate the Bayesian probability of a source to be star or galaxy. This procedure was applied pointing-by-pointing to account for varying observing conditions and sky position. Finally, we combined the morphological information from g, r, and i broad bands in order to improve the classification of low signal-to-noise sources. The derived probabilities are used to compute the pointing-by-pointing number counts of stars and galaxies. The former increases as we approach to the Milky Way disk, and the latter are similar across the probed area. The comparison with SDSS in the common regions is satisfactory up to r ~ 21, with consistent numbers of stars and galaxies, and consistent distributions in concentration and (g - i) colour spaces. We implement a morphological star/galaxy classifier based on PDF analysis, providing meaningful probabilities for J-PLUS sources to one magnitude deeper (r ~ 21) than a classical boolean classification. These probabilities are suited for the statistical study of 150k stars and 101k galaxies with 15 < r < 21 present in the 31.7 deg2 of the J-PLUS EDR. We estimate the constraining power of J-PAS for parameters of an interacting dark energy cosmology. The survey is expected to map several millions of luminous red galaxies, emission line galaxies and quasars in an area of thousands of square degrees in the northern sky with precise photometric redshift measurements. Forecasts for the DESI and Euclid surveys are also evaluated and compared to J-PAS. With the Fisher matrix approach, we find that J-PAS can place constraints on the interaction parameter comparable to those from DESI, with an absolute uncertainty of about $0.02$, when the interaction term is proportional to the dark matter energy density, and almost as good, of about $0.01$, when the interaction is proportional to the dark energy density. For the equation of state of dark energy, the constraints from J-PAS are slightly better in the two cases (uncertainties $0.04$ - $0.05$ against $0.05$ - $0.07$ around the fiducial value $-1$). Context. The spatial variations of stellar population properties within a galaxy are intimately related to their formation process. Therefore, spatially resolved studies of galaxies are essential to uncover their formation and assembly. Although the arrival of integral field unit (IFU) surveys has brought a significant breakthrough in the field, recent techniques that combine photometric multifilter surveys with spectral fitting diagnostics have opened a new, relatively low-cost way to disentangle the stellar population of spatially resolved galaxies compared to IFU surveys. Aims. The Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) is a dedicated multifilter designed to observed ∼8500 deg2 of the northern sky using 12 narrowband, intermediate-band, and broadband filters in the optical range. In this study, we test the potential of the multifilter observation carried out with J-PLUS to investigate the properties of spatially resolved nearby galaxies. Methods. We present detailed 2D maps of stellar population properties, i.e., age, metallicity, extinction, and stellar mass surface density, for two early-type galaxies observed in the J-PLUS and CALIFA surveys. These galaxies are NGC 5473 and NGC 5485. Radial structures are also compared and luminosity- and mass-weighted profiles are derived. We use MUFFIT to process the J-PLUS photometric multifilter observations, and STARLIGHT and STECKMAP to analyze IFU CALIFA data. Results. We demonstrate the scientific potential of J-PLUS/MUFFIT to explore the spatially resolved stellar populations of local galaxies. We find significant discrepancies between the results from the various analysis methods. While radial stellar population gradients obtained with J-PLUS/MUFFIT and the IFU technique CALIFA/STECKMAP are more in agreement, radial stellar population gradients largely differ when CALIFA/STARLIGHT methodology is used. A comparison of the absolute values reveals the existence of intrinsic systematic differences. Age and metallicity radial profiles derived from J-PLUS/MUFFIT are very similar when luminosity- or mass-weighted properties are used, suggesting that the contribution of a younger component is small and the star formation history of these early-type galaxies are well represented by mainly an old single stellar population component. Conclusions. We present the potential of J-PLUS to explore the unresolved stellar populations of spatially extended local galaxies. A comparison between the three methodologies reveals some discrepancies suggesting that the specific characteristics of each method causes important differences. We conclude that the ages, metallicities, and extinction derived for individual galaxies not only depend on the chosen models but also depend on the method used. Future work is required to evaluate in detail the origin of these differences and to quantify the impact that different fitting routines have on the derived stellar population properties.

We use three semi-analytical models (SAMs) of galaxy formation and evolution run on the same 1 h(-1) Gpc MultiDark Planck2 cosmological simulation to investigate the properties of [O II] emission line galaxies at redshift z similar to 1. We compare model predictions with different observational data sets, including DEEP2-FIREFLY galaxies with absolute magnitudes. We estimate the [O II] luminosity (L[O II]) of our model galaxies using the public code GET EMLINES, which ideally assumes as input the instantaneous star formation rates (SFRs). This property is only available in one of the SAMs under consideration, while the others provide average SFRs, as most models do. We study the feasibility of inferring galaxies' L[O II] from average SFRs in post-processing. We find that the result is accurate for model galaxies with dust attenuated L[O II] less than or similar to 10(42.2) erg s(-1) (< 5 per cent discrepancy). The galaxy properties that correlate the most with the model L[O II] are the SFR and the observed-frame u and g broad-band magnitudes. Such correlations have r-values above 0.64 and a dispersion that varies with L[O II]. We fit these correlations with simple linear relations and use them as proxies for L[O II], together with an observational conversion that depends on SFR and metallicity. These proxies result in [O II] luminosity functions and halo occupation distributions with shapes that vary depending on both the model and the method used to derive L[O II]. We use the GALFORM semi-analytical model to study high density regions traced by radio galaxies and quasars at high redshifts. We explore the impact that baryonic physics has upon the properties of galaxies in these environments. Star-forming emission-line galaxies (Ly{\alpha} and H{\alpha} emitters) are used to probe the environments at high redshifts. Radio galaxies are predicted to be hosted by more massive haloes than quasars, and this is imprinted on the amplitude of galaxy overdensities and cross-correlation functions. We find that Ly{\alpha} radiative transfer and AGN feedback indirectly affect the clustering on small scales and also the stellar masses, star- formation rates and gas metallicities of galaxies in dense environments. We also investigate the relation between protoclusters associated with radio galaxies and quasars, and their present- day cluster descendants. The progenitors of massive clusters associated with radio galaxies and quasars allow us to determine an average protocluster size in a simple way. Overdensities within the protoclusters are found to correlate with the halo descendant masses. We present scaling relations that can be applied to observational data. By computing projection effects due to the wavelength resolution of modern spectrographs and narrow-band filters we show that the former have enough spectral resolution to map the structure of protoclusters, whereas the latter can be used to measure the clustering around radio galaxies and quasars over larger scales to determine the mass of dark matter haloes hosting them., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures,accepted for publication after minor revision

We investigate the spatial distribution of Lyman alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) at $z \approx 2.67$, selected from the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey (NDWFS), using two-point statistics and topological diagnostics adopted from network science. We measure the clustering length, $r_0 \approx 4 h^{-1}$ Mpc, and the bias, $b_{LAE} = 2.2^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$. Fitting the clustering with halo occupation distribution (HOD) models results in two disparate possibilities: (1) where the fraction of central galaxies is $10^{12}$$M_\odot$; and (2) where the fraction is $\approx$20%. We refer to these two scenarios as the `Dusty Core Scenario' for Model#1 since most of central galaxies in massive halos are dead in Ly$\alpha$ emission, and the `Pristine Core Scenario' for Model#2 since the central galaxies are bright in Ly$\alpha$ emission. Traditional two-point statistics cannot distinguish between these disparate models given the current data sets. To overcome this degeneracy, we generate mock catalogs for each HOD model using a high resolution $N$-body simulation and adopt a network statistics approach, which provides excellent topological diagnostics for galaxy point distributions. We find three topological anomalies from the spatial distribution of observed LAEs, which are not reproduced by the HOD mocks. We find that Model#2 matches better all network statistics than Model#1, suggesting that the central galaxies in $> 10^{12} h^{-1} M_\odot$ halos at $z \approx 2.67$ need to be less dusty to be bright as LAEs, potentially implying some replenishing channels of pristine gas such as the cold mode accretion., Comment: 23 pages, 18 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present FLaREON (Fast Lyman-Alpha Radiative Escape from Outflowing Neutral gas), a public python package that delivers fast and accurate Lyman alpha escape fractions and line profiles over a wide range of outflow geometries and properties. The code incorporates different algorithms, such as interpolation and machine learning to predict Lyman alpha line properties from a pre-computed grid of outflow configurations based on the outputs of a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code. Here we describe the algorithm, discuss its performance and illustrate some of its many applications. Most notably, FLaREON can be used to infer the physical properties of the outflowing medium from an observed Lyman alpha line profile, including the escape fraction, or it can be run over millions of objects in a galaxy formation model to simulate the escape of Lyman alpha photons in a cosmological volume., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We present results from the semi-analytic model of galaxy formation SAG applied on the MULTIDARK simulation MDPL2. SAG features an updated supernova (SN) feedback scheme and a robust modelling of the environmental effects on satellite galaxies. This incorporates a gradual starvation of the hot gas halo driven by the action of ram pressure stripping (RPS), that can affect the cold gas disc, and tidal stripping (TS), which can act on all baryonic components. Galaxy orbits of orphan satellites are integrated providing adequate positions and velocities for the estimation of RPS and TS. The star formation history and stellar mass assembly of galaxies are sensitive to the redshift dependence implemented in the SN feedback model. We discuss a variant of our model that allows to reconcile the predicted star formation rate density at z ≳ 3 with the observed one, at the expense of an excess in the faint end of the stellar mass function at z= 2. The fractions of passive galaxies as a function of stellar mass, halo mass, and the halo-centric distances are consistent with observational measurements. The model also reproduces the evolution of the main sequence of star-forming central and satellite galaxies. The similarity between them is a result of the gradual starvation of the hot gas halo suffered by satellites, in which RPS plays a dominant role. RPS of the cold gas does not affect the fraction of quenched satellites but it contributes to reach the right atomic hydrogen gas content for more massive satellites (M* ≳1010M⊙)., Instituto de Astrofísica de La Plata, Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas

ATLAS (Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy) Probe is a mission concept for a NASA probe-class space mission with primary science goal the definitive study of galaxy evolution through the capture of 300,000,000 galaxy spectra up to z=7. It is made of a 1.5-m Ritchey-Chretien telescope with a field of view of solid angle 0.4 deg^2. The wavelength range is at least 1 μm to 4 μm with a goal of 0.9 μm to 5 μm. Average resolution is 600 but with a possible trade-off to get 1000 at the longer wavelengths. The ATLAS Probe instrument is made of 4 identical spectrographs each using a Digital Micro-mirror Device (DMD) as a multi-object mask. It builds on the work done for the ESA SPACE and Phase-A EUCLID projects. Three-mirror fore-optics re-image each sub-field on its DMD which has 2048 x 1080 mirrors 13.6 μm wide with 2 possible tilts, one sending light to the spectrograph, the other to a light dump. The ATLAS Probe spectrographs use prisms as dispersive elements because of their higher and more uniform transmission, their larger bandwidth, and the ability to control the resolution slope with the choice of glasses. Each spectrograph has 2 cameras. While the collimator is made of 4 mirrors, each camera is made of only one mirror which reduces the total number of optics. All mirrors are aspheric but with a relatively small P-V with respect to their best fit sphere making them easily manufacturable. For imaging, a simple mirror to replace the prism is not an option because the aberrations are globally corrected by the collimator and camera together which gives large aberrations when the mirror is inserted. An achromatic grism is used instead. There are many variations of the design that permit very different packaging of the optics. ATLAS Probe will enable ground-breaking science in all areas of astrophysics. It will (1) revolutionize galaxy evolution studies by tracing the relation between galaxies and dark matter from the local group to cosmic voids and filaments, from the epoch of reionization through the peak era of galaxy assembly; (2) open a new window into the dark universe by mapping the dark matter filaments to unveil the nature of the dark Universe using 3D weak lensing with spectroscopic redshifts, and obtaining definitive measurements of dark energy and modification of gravity using cosmic large-scale structure; (3) probe the Milky Way's dust-shrouded regions, reaching the far side of our Galaxy; and (4) characterize asteroids and other objects in the outer solar systems.

We present a new methodology for the estimation of stellar atmospheric parameters from narrow- and intermediate-band photometry of the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS), and propose a method for target pre-selection of low-metallicity stars for follow-up spectroscopic studies. Photometric metallicity estimates for stars in the globular cluster M15 are determined using this method. By development of a neural-network-based photometry pipeline, we aim to produce estimates of effective temperature, $T_{\rm eff}$, and metallicity, [Fe/H], for a large subset of stars in the J-PLUS footprint. The Stellar Photometric Index Network Explorer, SPHINX, is developed to produce estimates of $T_{\rm eff}$ and [Fe/H], after training on a combination of J-PLUS photometric inputs and synthetic magnitudes computed for medium-resolution (R ~ 2000) spectra of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. This methodology is applied to J-PLUS photometry of the globular cluster M15. Effective temperature estimates made with J-PLUS Early Data Release photometry exhibit low scatter, \sigma($T_{\rm eff}$) = 91 K, over the temperature range 4500 < $T_{\rm eff}$ (K) < 8500. For stars from the J-PLUS First Data Release with 4500 < $T_{\rm eff}$ (K) < 6200, 85 $\pm$ 3% of stars known to have [Fe/H], Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures

We present a survey of $z\sim3$ Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) within the fields of the VLT LBG Redshift Survey. The data encompasses 5 independent survey fields co-spatial with spectroscopic LBG data and covering a larger total area than previously analysed for LAE number counts and clustering. This affords an improved analysis over previous work by minimising the effects of cosmic variance and allowing the cross-clustering analysis of LAEs and LBGs. Our photometric sample consists of $\approx600$ LAE candidates, over an area of 1.07~deg$^2$, with equivalent widths of $\gtrsim65$~\AA\ and a flux limit of $\approx2\times10^{-17}$~erg~cm$^{-2}$~s$^{-1}$. From spectroscopic follow-up, we measured a success rate of $78\pm18\%$. We find the $R$-band continuum luminosity function to be $\sim10\times$ lower than the luminosity function of LBGs at this redshift, consistent with previous studies. Exploiting the large area of the survey, we estimate the LAE auto-correlation function and find a clustering length of $r_0=2.86\pm0.33~h^{-1}$~Mpc, low compared to the $z\sim3$ LBG population, but somewhat higher than previous LAE measurements. This corresponds to a median halo mass of $M_{\rm DM}=10^{11.0\pm0.3}~h^{-1}~$M$_{\odot}$. We present an analysis of clustering length versus continuum magnitude and find that the measurements for LAEs and LBGs are consistent at faint magnitudes. Our combined dataset of LAEs and LBGs allows us to measure, for the first time, the LBG-LAE cross-correlation, finding a clustering length of $r_0=3.29\pm0.57~h^{-1}$~Mpc and a LAE halo mass of $10^{11.1\pm0.4}~h^{-1}$~M$_{\odot}$. Overall, we conclude that LAEs inhabit primarily low mass halos, but form a relatively small proportion of the galaxy population found in such halos., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, published in MNRAS

A space-based galaxy redshift survey would have enormous power in constraining dark energy and testing general relativity, provided that its parameters are suitably optimized. We study viable space-based galaxy redshift surveys, exploring the dependence of the Dark Energy Task Force (DETF) figure-of-merit (FoM) on redshift accuracy, redshift range, survey area, target selection, and forecast method. Fitting formulae are provided for convenience. We also consider the dependence on the information used: the full galaxy power spectrum P(k, P(k) marginalized over its shape, or just the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO). We find that the inclusion of growth rate information (extracted using redshift space distortion and galaxy clustering amplitude measurements) leads to a factor of ~ 3 improvement in the FoM, assuming general relativity is not modified. This inclusion partially compensates for the loss of information when only the BAO are used to give geometrical constraints, rather than using the full P(k) as a standard ruler. We find that a space-based galaxy redshift survey covering ~20,000 deg^2 over 0.5< z < 2 with \sigma_z/(1+z)

We combine a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation with a very large simulation which follows the growth of large scale structure in a LambdaCDM universe to predict the clustering of Ly-alpha emitters. We find that the clustering strength of Ly-alpha emitters has only a weak dependence on Ly-alpha luminosity but a strong dependence on redshift. With increasing redshift, Ly-alpha emitters trace progressively rarer, higher density regions of the universe. Due to the large volume of the simulation, over 100 times bigger than any previously used for this application, we can construct mock catalogues of Ly-alpha emitters and study the sample variance of current and forthcoming surveys. We find that the number and clustering of Ly-alpha emitters in our mock catalogues are in agreement with measurements from current surveys, but that there is a considerable scatter in these quantities. We argue that a proposed survey of emitters at z=8.8 should be extended significantly in solid angle to allow a robust measurement of Ly-alpha emitter clustering.

We exploit wide-field Ly α imaging with Subaru to probe the environment around TN J1338−1942, a powerful radio galaxy with a > 100 kpc Ly α halo at z = 4.11. We used a sample of Ly α emitters (LAEs) down to log (LLyα[ erg s−1]) ∼ 42.8 to measure the galaxy density around TN J1338−1942, compared to a control sample from a blank field taken with the same instrument. We found that TN J1338−1942 resides in a region with a peak overdensity of δLAE = 2.8 ± 0.5 on scales of 8 h− 1 Mpc (on the sky) and 112 h− 1 Mpc (line of sight) in comoving coordinates. Adjacent to this overdensity, we found a strong underdensity where virtually no LAEs are detected. We used a semi-analytical model of LAEs derived from the Millennium Simulation to compare our results with theoretical predictions. While the theoretical density distribution is consistent with the blank field, overdense regions such as that around TN J1338−1942 are very rare, with a number density of 6.4 × 10− 8 Mpc− 3 (comoving), corresponding to the densest

We present a fast and accurate method to select an optimal set of parameters in semi-analytic models of galaxy formation and evolution (SAMs). Our approach compares the results of a model against a set of observables applying a stochastic technique called Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), a self-learning algorithm for localizing regions of maximum likelihood in multidimensional spaces that outperforms traditional sampling methods in terms of computational cost. We apply the PSO technique to the SAG semi-analytic model combined with merger trees extracted from a standard Lambda Cold Dark Matter N-body simulation. The calibration is performed using a combination of observed galaxy properties as constraints, including the local stellar mass function and the black hole to bulge mass relation. We test the ability of the PSO algorithm to find the best set of free parameters of the model by comparing the results with those obtained using a MCMC exploration. Both methods find the same maximum likelihood region, however, the PSO method requires one order of magnitude fewer evaluations. Galaxy surveys targeting emission lines are characterizing the evolution of star-forming galaxies, but there is still little theoretical progress in modelling their physical properties. We predict nebular emission from star-forming galaxies within a cosmological galaxy formation model. Emission lines are computed by combining the semi-analytical model SAG with the photoionization code MAPPINGS-III. We characterize the interstellar medium of galaxies by relating the ionization parameter of gas in galaxies to their cold gas metallicity, obtaining a reasonable agreement with the observed Hα, [O II] λ 3727, [O III] λ 5007 luminosity functions, and the BPT diagram for local star-forming galaxies. The average ionization parameter is found to increase towards low star formation rates and high redshifts, consistent with recent observational results. The predicted link between different emission lines and their associated star formation rates is studied by presenting scaling relations to relate them. Our model predicts that emission-line galaxies have modest clustering bias, and thus reside in dark matter haloes of masses below Mhalo ≲ 1012 [h−1 M⊙]. We make use of a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation to investigate the origin of the observed correlation between [α/Fe] abundance ratios and stellar mass in elliptical galaxies.We implement a new galaxy-wide stellar initial mass function (IMF; top-heavy integrated galaxy initial mass function, TH-IGIMF) in the semi-analytic model SAG (acronym for semi-analytic galaxies) and evaluate its impact on the chemical evolution of galaxies. The star formation rate (SFR) dependence of the slope of the TH-IGIMF is found to be key to reproducing the correct [α/Fe]-stellar mass relation. Massive galaxies reach higher [α/Fe] abundance ratios because they are characterized by more top-heavy IMFs as a result of their higher SFR. As a consequence of our analysis, the value of the minimum embedded star cluster mass and of the slope of the embedded cluster mass function, which are free parameters involved in the TH-IGIMF theory, are found to be as lowas 5 and 2M⊙, respectively. Amild downsizing trend is present for galaxies generated assuming either a universal IMF or a variable TH-IGIMF.We find that, regardless of galaxy mass, older galaxies (with formation redshifts ≳2) are formed in shorter time-scales (≲2 Gyr), thus achieving larger [α/Fe] values. Hence, the time-scale of galaxy formation alone cannot explain the slope of the [α/Fe]-galaxy mass relation, but is responsible for the big dispersion of [α/Fe] abundance ratios at fixed stellar mass. We further test the hypothesis of a TH-IGIMF in elliptical galaxies by looking into mass-to-light ratios, and luminosity functions. Models with a TH-IGIMF are also favoured by these constraints. We search for evidence of diffuse Ly-alpha emission from extended neutral hydrogen surrounding Ly-alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) using deep narrow-band images of the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. By stacking the profiles of 187 LAEs at z = 2.06, 241 LAEs at z = 3.10, and 179 LAEs at z = 3.12, and carefully performing low-surface brightness photometry, we obtain mean surface brightness maps that reach 9.9, 8.7, and 6.2 * 10^{-19} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1} arcsec^{-2} in the emission line. We undertake a thorough investigation of systematic uncertainties in our surface brightness measurements, and find that our limits are 5--10 times larger than would be expected from Poisson background fluctuations; these uncertainties are often underestimated in the literature. At z ~ 3.1, we find evidence for extended halos with small scale lengths of 5--8 kpc in some, but not all of our sub-samples. We demonstrate that sub-samples of LAEs with low equivalent widths and brighter continuum magnitudes are more likely to possess such halos. At z ~ 2.1, we find no evidence of extended Ly-alpha emission down to our detection limits. Through Monte-Carlo simulations, we also show that we would have detected large diffuse LAE halos if they were present in our data sets. We compare these findings to other measurements in the literature, and discuss possible instrumental and astrophysical reasons for the discrepancies., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will survey the southern sky from 2022-2032 with unprecedented detail. Since the observing strategy can lead to artifacts in the data, we investigate the effects of telescope-pointing offsets (called dithers) on the r-band coadded 5σ depth yielded after the 10-year survey. We analyze this survey depth for several geometric patterns of dithers (e.g., random, hexagonal lattice, spiral) with amplitudes as large as the radius of the LSST field of view, implemented on different timescales (per season, per night, per visit). Our results illustrate that per night and per visit dither assignments are more effective than per season assignments. Also, we find that some dither geometries (e.g., hexagonal lattice) are particularly sensitive to the timescale on which the dithers are implemented, while others like random dithers perform well on all timescales. We then model the propagation of depth variations to artificial fluctuations in galaxy counts, which are a systematic for LSS studies. We calculate the bias in galaxy counts caused by the observing strategy accounting for photometric calibration uncertainties, dust extinction, and magnitude cuts; uncertainties in this bias limit our ability to account for structure induced by the observing strategy. We find that after 10 years of the LSST survey, the best dither strategies lead to uncertainties in this bias that are smaller than the minimum statistical floor for a galaxy catalog as deep as r < 27.5. Future galaxy surveys will map the galaxy distribution in the redshift interval $0.5 -15.4$; a flux limit of at least $\logfha = -16$ is required for an \ha sample to become competitive in effective volume.

We use a model for the evolution of galaxies in the far-infrared (far-IR) based on the Λ-cold dark matter cosmology to make detailed predictions for the upcoming cosmological surveys with the Herschel Space Observatory. We use the combined GALFORM semi-analytical galaxy formation model and GRASIL spectrophotometric code to compute galaxy spectral energy distribution (SEDs) including the reprocessing of radiation by dust. The model, which is the same as that in Baugh et al., assumes two different initial mass functions (IMFs): a normal solar neighbourhood IMF for quiescent star formation in discs, and a very top-heavy IMF in starbursts triggered by galaxy mergers. We have shown previously that the top-heavy IMF appears necessary to explain the number counts and redshifts of faint submillimetre galaxies. In this paper, we present predictions for galaxy luminosity functions, number counts and redshift distributions in the Herschel imaging bands. We find that source confusion will be a serious problem in the deepest planned surveys. We also show predictions for physical properties such as star formation rates and stellar, gas and halo masses, together with fluxes at other wavelengths (from the far-ultraviolet to the radio) relevant for multi-wavelength follow-up observations. We investigate what fraction of the total IR emission from dust and of the high-mass star formation over the history of the Universe should be resolved by planned surveys with Herschel, and find a fraction ∼30–50 per cent, depending on confusion. Finally, we show that galaxies in Herschel surveys should be significantly clustered.

Future galaxy redshift surveys aim to measure cosmological quantities from the galaxy power spectrum. A prime example is the detection of baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAOs), providing a standard ruler to measure the dark energy equation of state, w(z), to high precision. The strongest practical limitation for these experiments is how quickly accurate redshifts can be measured for sufficient galaxies to map the large-scale structure. A promising strategy is to target emission-line (i.e. star-forming) galaxies at high-redshift (z~0.5-2); not only is the space density of this population increasing out to z~2, but also emission-lines provide an efficient method of redshift determination. Motivated by the prospect of future dark energy surveys targeting H-alpha emitters at near-infrared wavelengths (i.e. z>0.5), we use the latest empirical data to model the evolution of the H-alpha luminosity function out to z~2, and thus provide predictions for the abundance of H-alpha emitters for practical limiting fluxes. We caution that the estimates presented in this work must be tempered by an efficiency factor, epsilon, giving the redshift success rate from these potential targets. For a range of practical efficiencies and limiting fluxes, we provide an estimate of nP_{0.2}, where n is the 3D galaxy number density and P_{0.2} is the galaxy power spectrum evaluated at k=0.2h/Mpc. Ideal surveys must provide nP_{0.2}>1 in order to balance shot-noise and cosmic variance errors. We show that a realistic emission-line survey (epsilon=0.5) could achieve nP_{0.2}=1 out to z~1.5 with a limiting flux of 10^{-16} erg/s/cm^{-2}. If the limiting flux is a factor 5 brighter, then this goal can only be achieved out to z~0.5, highlighting the importance of survey depth and efficiency in cosmological redshift surveys., 9 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. We studied the clustering properties and multiwavelength spectral energy distributions of a complete sample of 162 Ly Alpha-Emitting (LAE) galaxies at z=3.1 discovered in deep narrow-band MUSYC imaging of the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. LAEs were selected to have observed frame equivalent widths >80A and emission line fluxes >1.5E-17 erg/cm^2/s. Only 1% of our LAE sample appears to host AGN. The LAEs exhibit a moderate spatial correlation length of r_0=3.6+0.8-1.0 Mpc, corresponding to a bias factor b=1.7+0.3-0.4, which implies median dark matter halo masses of log10(M_med) = 10.9+0.5-0.9 M_sun. Comparing the number density of LAEs, (1.5+-0.3)E-3/Mpc^3, with the number density of these halos finds a mean halo occupation ~1-10%. The evolution of galaxy bias with redshift implies that most z=3.1 LAEs evolve into present-day galaxies with L3 galaxy populations typically evolve into more massive galaxies. Halo merger trees show that z=0 descendants occupy halos with a wide range of masses, with a median descendant mass close to that of L*. Only 30% of LAEs have sufficient stellar mass (>~3E9 M_sun) to yield detections in deep Spitzer-IRAC imaging. A two-population SED fit to the stacked UBVRIzJK+[3.6,4.5,5.6,8.0]micron fluxes of the IRAC-undetected objects finds that the typical LAE has low stellar mass (1.0+0.6-0.4 E9 M_sun), moderate star formation rate (2+-1 M_sun/yr), a young component age of 20+30-10 Myr, and little dust (A_V, ApJ, in press, 7 pages including 4 color figures

Context: Many current and future surveys aim to detect the highest redshift (z >~ 7) sources through their Lyman-alpha (Ly-alpha) emission, using the narrow-band imaging method. However, to date the surveys have only yielded non-detections and upper limits as no survey has reached the necessary combination of depth and area to detect these very young star forming galaxies. Aims: We aim to calculate model luminosity functions and mock surveys of Ly-alpha emitters at z >~ 7 based on a variety of approaches. Methods: We calculate model luminosity functions at different redshifts based on three different approaches: a semi-analytical model based on CDM, a simple phenomenological model, and an extrapolation of observed Schechter functions at lower redshifts. The results of the first two models are compared with observations made at redshifts z ~ 5.7 and z ~ 6.5, and they are then extrapolated to higher redshift. Results: We present model luminosity functions for redshifts between z = 7 - 12.5 and give specific number predictions for future planned or possible narrow-band surveys for Ly-alpha emitters. We also investigate what constraints future observations will be able to place on the Ly-alpha luminosity function at very high redshift. Conclusion: It should be possible to observe z = 7 - 10 Ly-alpha emitters with present or near-future instruments if enough observing time is allocated. In particular, large area surveys such as ELVIS (Emission Line galaxies with VISTA Survey) will be useful in collecting a large sample. We describe the results of an extremely deep, 0.28 deg^2 survey for z = 3.1 Ly-alpha emission-line galaxies in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. By using a narrow-band 5000 Anstrom filter and complementary broadband photometry from the MUSYC survey, we identify a statistically complete sample of 162 galaxies with monochromatic fluxes brighter than 1.5 x 10^-17 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 and observers frame equivalent widths greater than 80 Angstroms. We show that the equivalent width distribution of these objects follows an exponential with a rest-frame scale length of w_0 = 76 +/- 10 Angstroms. In addition, we show that in the emission line, the luminosity function of Ly-alpha galaxies has a faint-end power-law slope of alpha = -1.49 +/- 0.4, a bright-end cutoff of log L^* = 42.64 +/- 0.2, and a space density above our detection thresholds of 1.46 +/- 0.12 x 10^-3 h70^3 galaxies Mpc^-3. Finally, by comparing the emission-line and continuum properties of the LAEs, we show that the star-formation rates derived from Ly-alpha are ~3 times lower than those inferred from the rest-frame UV continuum. We use this offset to deduce the existence of a small amount of internal extinction within the host galaxies. This extinction, coupled with the lack of extremely-high equivalent width emitters, argues that these galaxies are not primordial Pop III objects, though they are young and relatively chemically unevolved., 45 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We use the semi-analytic model of galaxy formation SAG to study the relevance of mass and environmental quenching on satellite galaxies. We find that environmental processes dominate the star formation (SF) quenching of low-mass satellites (⁠M⋆ ≲ 1010.5 M⊙⁠), whereas high-mass galaxies typically quench as centrals. High-mass galaxies that remain actively forming stars while being accreted are found to be mainly affected by mass quenching after their first infall. For a given stellar mass, our model predicts SF quenching to be less efficient in low-mass haloes both before and after infall, in contradiction with common interpretations of observational data. Our model supports a two-stage scenario to explain the SF quenching. Initially, the SF of satellites resembles that of centrals until the gas cooling rate is reduced to approximately half its value at infall. Then, the SF fades through secular processes that exhaust the cold gas reservoir. This reservoir is not replenished efficiently due to the action of either ram-pressure stripping of the hot gas in low-mass satellites, or feedback from the active galactic nucleus in high-mass satellites. The delay times for the onset of SF quenching are found to range from ≈3 to ≈1Gyr for low-mass (⁠M⋆ ≈ 10¹⁰ M⊙⁠) and high-mass (⁠M⋆ ≈ 10¹¹ M⊙⁠) satellites, respectively. SF fades in ≈1Gyr⁠, largely independent of stellar mass. We find that the SF quenching of low-mass satellites supports the so-called delay-then-rapid quenching scenario. We use the semi-analytical model of galaxy formation GALFORM to characterise an indirect signature of AGN feedback in the environment of radio galaxies at high redshifts. The predicted environment of radio galaxies is denser than that of radio-quiet galaxies with the same stellar mass. This is consistent with observational results from the CARLA survey. Our model shows that the differences in environment are due to radio galaxies being hosted by dark matter haloes that are ~1.5 dex more massive than those hosting radio-quiet galaxies with the same stellar mass. By running a control-simulation in which AGN feedback is switched-off, we identify AGN feedback as the primary mechanism affecting the build-up of the stellar component of radio galaxies, thus explaining the different environment in radio galaxies and their radio-quiet counterparts. The difference in host halo mass between radio loud and radio quiet galaxies translates into different galaxies populating each environment. We predict a higher fraction of passive galaxies around radio loud galaxies compared to their radio-quiet counterparts. Furthermore, such a high fraction of passive galaxies shapes the predicted infrared luminosity function in the environment of radio galaxies in a way that is consistent with observational findings. Our results suggest that the impact of AGN feedback at high redshifts and environmental mechanisms affecting galaxies in high halo masses can be revealed by studying the environment of radio galaxies, thus providing new constraints on galaxy formation physics at high redshifts., 12 pages, 7 Figures, submitted to MNRAS

ATLAS (Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy) Probe is a concept for a NASA probe-class space mission. It is the follow-up space mission to WFIRST, boosting its scientific return by obtaining deep IR slit spectroscopy for 70% of all galaxies imaged by a 2000 sq deg WFIRST High Latitude Survey at z>0.5. ATLAS will measure accurate and precise redshifts for 200M galaxies out to z < 7, and deliver spectra that enable a wide range of diagnostic studies of the physical properties of galaxies over most of cosmic history. ATLAS Probe science spans four broad categories: (1) Revolutionizing galaxy evolution studies by tracing the relation between galaxies and dark matter from galaxy groups to cosmic voids and filaments, from the epoch of reionization through the peak era of galaxy assembly; (2) Opening a new window into the dark Universe by weighing the dark matter filaments using 3D weak lensing with spectroscopic redshifts, and obtaining definitive measurements of dark energy and modification of General Relativity using galaxy clustering; (3) Probing the Milky Way's dust-enshrouded regions, reaching the far side of our Galaxy; and (4) Exploring the formation history of the outer Solar System by characterizing Kuiper Belt Objects. ATLAS Probe is a 1.5m telescope with a field of view of 0.4 sq deg, and uses Digital Micro-mirror Devices (DMDs) as slit selectors. It has a spectroscopic resolution of R = 1000 over 1-4 microns, and a spectroscopic multiplex factor >5,000. ATLAS is designed to fit within the NASA probe-class space mission cost envelope; it has a single instrument, a telescope aperture that allows for a lighter launch vehicle, and mature technology. ATLAS Probe will lead to transformative science over the entire range of astrophysics: from galaxy evolution to the dark Universe, from Solar System objects to the dusty regions of the Milky Way., 46 pages. Extragalactic astronomy.-- et al., [Context]: Samples of star-forming galaxies at different redshifts have been traditionally selected via color techniques. The ALHAMBRA survey was designed to perform a uniform cosmic tomography of the Universe, and we here exploit it to trace the evolution of these galaxies. [Aims]: Our objective is to use the homogeneous optical coverage of the ALHAMBRA filter system to select samples of star-forming galaxies at different epochs of the Universe and study their properties.
