The objective was to verify if the primary root emission can be recommended as a vigor test for soybean seeds. For this, five lots of varieties ANTA 82, NA7337 and BRS1074IPRO were evaluated by first count, germination, emergence, emergence speed index and tetrazolium tests. In the root protrusion test at 20, 25 and 30 ºC, two evaluation criteria were adopted: primary root emission precocity index (PREPI) and percentage of seeds that emitted the primary root (PRE). The seeds counted were those with a primary root equal to or greater than 2 mm, every 12 h from the installation of the test until 120 h. The design was completely randomized and means were compared, within each evaluation time, using the Scott-Knott test at 5% probability. Pearson’s linear correlation was performed for PREPI and PRE with emergence. PREPI was not considered efficient. For the PRE, at 20 ºC, there was a correlation at 72 h, for the three varieties. At 25 ºC there was a correlation for a period of 36 h for ANTA 82 and NA7337 and 60 h for BRS1074IPRO. At 30 ºC there was a correlation in the time of 36 h for the three cultivars. Considering that speed in obtaining results is important in vigor tests, it is concluded that primary root emission for 36 h after installing the test at 30 ºC is recommended as a vigor test in the quality control of soybean seeds.

Atmospheric plasma application technology consists of a fast and practical method, which has the potential to modify the surface of seeds with integumentary hardness. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of applying atmospheric cold plasma on Pityrocarpa moniliformis seeds, assessing its implications on the seed coat impermeability, germination and vigor. Cells were subjected to plasma for 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 minutes, using seeds without any treatment as a control. After application, the seed coat wettability, imbibition curve and electrical conductivity of the soaking solution were determined. Seeds were also subjected to the germination test, and its results were used to determine viability, median, uniformity and asymmetry of germination. Seeds subjected to plasma for 5.0 and 4.0 minutes showed the lowest apparent contact angles, 64 and 61°, respectively, characterizing greater wettability of the seed coat among the treatments tested. Higher germination was observed in the treatments with plasma application when compared to the control. Atmospheric plasma application technology has the potential to be used as an accelerator of P. moniliformis seed germination. Resumo: A tecnologia de aplicação do plasma atmosférico consiste em um método rápido e prático, que apresenta potencial de modificação da superfície tegumentar de sementes com dureza tegumentar. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar o efeito da aplicação do plasma frio atmosférico em sementes de Pityrocarpa moniliformis, verificando suas implicações sobre a impermeabilidade do tegumento, germinação e vigor. As sementes foram submetidas ao plasma por 1,5; 2,0; 3,0; 4,0 e 5,0 minutos, utilizando-se como controle, sementes sem nenhum tratamento. Após a aplicação, determinou-se a molhabilidade do tegumento, curva de embebição e condutividade elétrica da solução de embebição. As sementes também foram submetidas ao teste de germinação, tendo-se, a partir dos seus resultados determinado a viabilidade, mediana, uniformidade e assimetria da germinação. As sementes submetidas ao plasma por 4,0 e 5,0 minutos apresentaram os menores ângulos de contato aparente, 64 e 61°, respectivamente, caracterizando maior molhabilidade do tegumento, entre os tratamentos testados. Maior germinação foi observada nos tratamentos com aplicação do plasma quando comparado com o controle. A tecnologia de aplicação do plasma atmosférico tem potencial para ser utilizada como acelerador da germinação de sementes de P. moniliformis.

The combination of nitrogen-fixing bacteria and biocontrolling fungi that interfere with the development of plants can be a tool to promote a better quality of seeds obtained under these combinations. The objective of this work was to verify the interaction of bioproducts based on Bradyrhizobium japonicum, Azospirillum brasilense, Trichoderma asperrellum and BioAx applied to the soil to improve seed quality in soybean cultivars. The experimental design used was completely randomized in a 3 × 4 factorial scheme, with three replications. The treatments consisted of three soybean cultivars [Brasmax Foco IPRO, Brasmax Desafio IPRO and Brasmax Bonus IPRO] and four biological [T1- Azospirillum brasilense + Bradyrhizobium japonicum, T2- BioAx, T3- Trichoderma asperrellum, and T4- the combination of the three biologicals]. It was evaluated: the first germination count, germination, electrical conductivity, dry mass of the area and seedling roots and tetrazolium test (vigor and viability). The results showed that the responses obtained were dependent on the cultivars evaluated, and that Brasmax Foco IPRO and Brasmax Desafio IPRO showed higher physiological seed quality. The effect of biologicals depends on the soybean cultivar; in cultivars with higher physiological quality, the biological effect is not evident. However, in cultivars with a lower physiological quality (Brasmax Bonus IPRO), the effect of biologicals is more evident, thus constituting an excellent alternative to improve the quality of soybean seeds with the combined use of biologicals. La combinación de bacterias fijadoras de nitrógeno y hongos biocontroladores que interfieren con el desarrollo de las plantas puede ser una herramienta para promover una mejor calidad de semillas obtenidas bajo estas combinaciones. El objetivo de este trabajo fue verificar la interacción de bioproductos basados en Bradyrhizobium japonicum, Azospirillum brasilense, Trichoderma asperrellum y BioAx aplicado al suelo para mejorar la calidad de la semilla en cultivares de soja. El diseño experimental utilizado fue completamente al azar en un esquema factorial 3 × 4, con tres repeticiones. Los tratamientos consistieron en tres cultivares de soja [Brasmax Foco IPRO, Brasmax Desafio IPRO y Brasmax Bonus IPRO] y cuatro biológicos [T1- Azospirillum brasilense + Bradyrhizobium japonicum, T2- BioAx, T3- Trichoderma asperrellum y T4- la combinación de los tres biológicos]. Se evaluó: primer conteo de germinación, germinación, conductividad eléctrica, masa seca del área y raíces de plántula y prueba de tetrazolio (vigor y viabilidad). Los resultados mostraron que las respuestas obtenidas fueron dependientes de los cultivares evaluados, y que Brasmax Foco IPRO y Brasmax Desafio IPRO presentaron mayor calidad fisiológica de las semillas. El efecto de los biológicos depende del cultivo de soja; en cultivares de mayor calidad fisiológica, el efecto biológico no es evidente. Sin embargo, en cultivares de menor calidad fisiológica (Brasmax Bonus IPRO), el efecto de los biológicos es más evidente, constituyendo así una excelente alternativa para mejorar la calidad de las semillas de soja con el uso combinado de biológicos. Os tratamentos consistiram em três cultivares de soja [Brasmax Foco IPRO, Brasmax Desafio IPRO e Brasmax Bônus IPRO] e quatro biológicos [T1- Azospirillum brasilense + Bradyrhizobium japonicum, T2- BioAx, T3- Trichoderma asperrellum, e T4- a combinação dos três biológicos]. Avaliou-se: a primeira contagem de germinação, germinação, condutividade elétrica, massa seca da parte área e de raízes de plântulas e teste de tetrazólio (vigor e viabilidade). Os resultados mostraram que as respostas obtidas foram dependentes das cultivares avaliadas, e que Brasmax Foco IPRO e Brasmax Desafio IPRO apresentaram maior qualidade fisiológica das sementes. O efeito dos biológicos dependem da cultivar da soja; em cultivares com maior qualidade fisiológica o efeito do biológico não é evidente. Entretanto, em cultivares com menor qualidade fisiológica (Brasmax Bônus IPRO), o efeito dos biológicos é mais evidente, constituindo assim uma excelente alternativa de se melhorar a qualidade das sementes de soja com o uso combinado de biológicos.

This work aimed to evaluate the sources and doses of zinc in seed quality and in the nutrition of rice seedlings. The experiment consisted of a completely randomized design with four replications, five doses of zinc in the form of oxide (0; 20; 40, 80 and 160 g kg-1), and a control treatment of zinc in the form of sulfate (40 g kg-1). The following parameters were evaluated: germination, accelerated aging, seedlings emergence, emergence speed index, cold test, dry matter, and zinc concentration in the root and shoot of the seedlings. Seed coating with zinc, regardless of the source, improved seed physiological quality and seedling nutrition. Zinc sources did not affect germination; however, the oxide form induced better seed vigor, except for the highest dose (160 g kg-1). Increasing doses of zinc oxide augmented the concentration of this nutrient in rice seedlings dry matter. Zinc coating of rice seeds in the form of microparticulate, depending on the dose, can maximize seed vigor and increase the concentration of this micronutrient in the seedlings when compared with zinc sulfate, the traditional source. RESUMO A importância econômica do mogno ressalta a relevância da análise do vigor de suas sementes visando à formação de mudas com qualidade. O objetivo foi avaliar a influência de diferentes temperaturas e períodos de exposição do teste de envelhecimento acelerado em sementes de mogno. As variáveis analisadas foram: teor de água, emergência de plântulas, índice de velocidade de emergência, freqüência relativa e tempo médio de emergência após o envelhecimento acelerado [(39; 41; 43 e 45 ?C, durante zero (testemunha), 24; 48; 72 e 96 horas]. O vigor de sementes de mogno pode ser avaliado por meio do teste de envelhecimento acelerado nas temperaturas de 39 ºC/96 horas e 43 ºC por 48 ou 96 horas. A combinação 43 ºC/48 horas permite reduzir o tempo de execução das avaliações de sementes de mogno. O índice de velocidade de emergência é uma variável adequada para avaliar a influência do envelhecimento acelerado sobre sementes de mogno. ABSTRACT The economic importance of mahogany highlights the relevance of analysing seed vigour with a view to the formation of quality seedlings. The aim was to evaluate the influence of different temperatures and periods of exposure in tests of accelerated ageing in mahogany seeds. The variables analysed were: water content, seedling emergence, emergence speed index, relative frequency and mean emergence time after accelerated ageing [(39, 41, 43 and 45 °C for 0 (control), 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours]. Seed vigour in mahogany seeds can be evaluated by means of the accelerated ageing test at temperatures of 39 °C for 96 hours, and at 43 °C for 48 or 96 hours. The combination of 43 °C for 48 hours can reduce the time needed for evaluation of the seeds. The emergence speed index is an effective variable in evaluating the effect of accelerated ageing on mahogany seeds.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of temperature, substrate, and luminosity on chia seeds in order to determine adequate conditions for a germination test. The experiment consisted of a completely randomized design, in a 4 × 5 × 2 factorial scheme (four substrates × five temperatures × two luminosity conditions), with four replications. The following variables were analyzed: first germination count, germination, germination speed index, and mean germination time. Germination was best at 15, 20, 25, and 30 °C for the on-paper, paper roll, and sand substrates. However, in the presence of luminosity and at 25 °C, the on-paper substrate had the highest mean. For all substrates, the lowest germination was achieved at 35 °C, proving that high temperatures reduce chia seed germination. Germination speed index was highest at 25 and 30 °C for on-paper, paper roll, and sand substrates, in both the presence and absence of luminosity. Chia seeds are considered to be neutral photoblasts. Germination tests should be performed with the on-paper substrate, at 25 °C, and with a duration of seven days. The first count should be carried out four days after establishment of the test. RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a temperatura, o substrato e a luminosidade na germinação de sementes de chia, a fim de determinar procedimentos adequados para um teste de germinação. O experimento consistiu em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 4 x 5 x 2 (quatro substratos x cinco temperaturas x duas condições de luminosidade), com quatro repetições. As seguintes variáveis foram analisadas: primeira contagem de germinação; germinação; índice de velocidade de germinação e tempo médio de germinação. A germinação apresentou as maiores porcentagem de germinação a 15, 20, 25 e 30 °C para os substratos em papel, rolo de papel e areia; no entanto, na presença de luminosidade, o substrato em papel, a 25 °C, diferiu de todos os demais, resultando na maior média. Para todos os substratos, a menor germinação foi obtida a 35 °C, comprovando que o uso de altas temperaturas reduz a germinação das sementes de chia. O índice de velocidade de germinação apresentou os maiores valores a 25 e 30 °C para substratos em papel, rolo de papel e areia, tanto na presença quanto na ausência de luminosidade. Sementes de chia são consideradas como fotoblasticas neutras. O teste de germinação deve ser realizado com o substrato em papel, a 25 °C, com duração de sete dias, sendo a primeira contagem realizada aos quatro dias após a instalação do teste.

The root protrusion test is a vigor test based on the principle that seeds with high vigor emit the primary root faster than less vigorous ones. Chia is a plant propagated by seeds and it is studied owing to its health benefits, but there is little technical information known about its culture. The objective of this work was to adapt the methodology of the root protrusion test to determine the vigor of chia seed lots. Five chia seed lots were submitted to an initial quality evaluation using germination and vigor tests (first germination, emergence, and emergence speed index). The root protrusion test was performed at temperatures of 20, 25 and 30 °C and evaluated every 2 h up to 42 h. During the test, protrusion stability was assessed and the criterion of 2 mm primary root count was used. The root protrusion test at 20 °C did not distinguish the lots in the same way as emergence. At 25 °C it was possible to classify lots after 30 h similarly to emergence. At 30 °C, root protrusion and the separation of seed lots was accelerated. Thus, the root protrusion test conducted for 30 h at 25 °C has sufficient sensitivity to detect differences in vigor between chia seed lots. RESUMO O teste de protrusão radicular é um teste de vigor, baseando no princípio de que sementes com alto vigor emitem a raiz primária mais rápido em comparação com as menos vigorosas. A chia é uma planta propagada por sementes, sendo motivo de pesquisa pelos seus benefícios a saúde, mas com poucas informações técnicas sobre a cultura. O objetivo do trabalho foi adequar à metodologia do teste de protrusão radicular para determinação do vigor de lotes de sementes de chia. Utilizou-se cinco lotes de sementes de chia, submetidos à avaliação da qualidade inicial por meio dos testes de germinação e vigor (primeira contagem de germinação, emergência e índice de velocidade de emergência). O teste de protrusão radicular foi realizado nas temperaturas de 20, 25 e 30 ºC, e avaliado a cada duas horas até 42 horas, onde se obteve a estabilidade da protrusão, e sendo utilizado o critério de contagem de 2 mm de raiz primária. O teste de protrusão radicular na temperatura de 20 ºC não distinguiu os lotes semelhantes à emergência. A 25 °C, foi possível classificar os lotes de forma semelhante à emergência após 30 horas. A temperatura de 30 °C foi eficiente na aceleração da protrusão radicular e separação dos lotes de sementes. O teste de protrusão radicular é sensível para detectar diferenças de vigor entre os lotes de sementes de chia, devendo ser conduzido por 30 horas a 25 ºC.

RESUMO A mucuna-preta é uma leguminosa empregada na recuperação de solos degradados; no entanto, a dormência influencia negativamente a germinação das sementes e o estabelecimento das plântulas. O objetivo foi selecionar tratamentos para eliminar a dormência de sementes de mucuna-preta e, assim, acelerar e sincronizar a emergência de plântulas. O experimento foi realizado em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com 10 tratamentos, cada um com quatro repetições de 25 sementes. Os tratamentos foram: testemunha (sementes intactas), imersão em água aquecida a 60 ºC, escarificação mecânica com esmeril elétrico por um segundo na região distal da semente e escarificação com ácido sulfúrico (H2SO4 98%) por 5; 10; 15; 20; 25; 30 e 35 minutos. As avaliações ocorreram por meio do teste de emergência de plântulas, tempo médio de emergência, índice de velocidade de emergência e frequência relativa de emergência. A emergência de plântulas de mucuna-preta é incrementada e o tempo médio de emergência reduzido por meio da escarificação na região distal da semente e imersão em ácido sulfúrico por períodos de 5 a 35 minutos. O tratamento ácido por 10 a 20 minutos aumenta, acelera e sincroniza a emergência das plântulas de mucuna-preta, mas o uso de 10 minutos permite reduzir o tempo de contato com o H2SO4. ABSTRACT Stizolobium aterrimum, known locally as mucuna-preta, is a legume used in the recovery of degraded soils. However, dormancy has a negative impact on seed germination and establishment of the seedlings. The aim was to select treatments to eliminate dormancy in seeds of mucuna-preta, thereby accelerating and synchronising seedling emergence. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomised design with 10 treatments, each with four replications of 25 seeds. The treatments were a control (intact seeds), immersion in water heated to 60 ºC, mechanical scarification with an electric emery scarifier for one second in the distal region of the seed, and scarification with sulphuric acid (H2SO4 98%) for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 minutes. The evaluations were made with tests for seedling emergence, average time of emergence, speed of emergence index and relative frequency of emergence. Seedling emergence in mucuna-preta is increased, and the average time of emergence reduced by scarification in the distal region of the seed and immersion in sulphuric acid for periods of 5 to 35 minutes. Treatment with the acid for 10 to 20 minutes increases, accelerates and synchronizes seedling emergence in black mucuna, but 10 minutes will reduce the period of contact with the H2SO4.
