In blockchain systems, fair transaction ordering is crucial for a trusted and regulation-compliant economic ecosystem. Unlike traditional State Machine Replication (SMR) systems, which focus solely on liveness and safety, blockchain systems also require a fairness property. This paper examines these properties and aims to eliminate algorithmic bias in transaction ordering services. We build on the notion of equal opportunity. We characterize transactions in terms of relevant and irrelevant features, requiring that the order be determined solely by the relevant ones. Specifically, transactions with identical relevant features should have an equal chance of being ordered before one another. We extend this framework to define a property where the greater the distance in relevant features between transactions, the higher the probability of prioritizing one over the other. We reveal a surprising link between equal opportunity in SMR and Differential Privacy (DP), showing that any DP mechanism can be used to ensure fairness in SMR. This connection not only enhances our understanding of the interplay between privacy and fairness in distributed computing but also opens up new opportunities for designing fair distributed protocols using well-established DP techniques.

Objective. In this work, we propose a new computational framework to assist neurophysiologists in Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) analysis, with the final aim of improving the definition of the Epileptogenic Zone (EZ) in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. Method. We consider the Phase Transfer Entropy (PTE) model to estimate the effective connectivity between SEEG channels. Hence, we design an algorithm, named the Desynchronization Index (DI), that classifies as epileptogenic the channels that show independent behavior with respect to the rest of the network during the seconds preceding the seizure propagation. Results. We test the proposed DI algorithm against Epileptogenic Index (EI) on a clinical dataset of 11 patients, considering the neurophysiological evaluation of the EZ as the clinical ground truth. Our results denote that DI overcomes EI in terms of area under the ROC curve (AUC=0.80 vs AUC=0.74), while combining the two algorithms as a unique tool leads to the best performance (AUC=0.87). Conclusions. The DI algorithm underscores connectivity dynamics that can hardly be identified with a pure visual analysis, increasing the accuracy in the EZ definition compared to traditional methods. Significance. The integration of connectivity- and energy-based metrics, as the one we propose, can lead to the definition of a new effective biomarker of the EZ, reducing the burden required by the SEEG review in the case of extensive implants and improving our understanding of the dynamics leading to the generation of seizures.

For nearly a decade, disinformation has dominated social debates, with its harmful impacts growing more evident. Episodes like the January 6 United States Capitol attack and the Rohingya genocide exemplify how this phenomenon has been weaponized. While considerable attention has been paid to its impact on societal discourse and minority persecution, there remains a gap in analyzing its role as a malicious hybrid tool targeting critical infrastructures. This article addresses this gap by presenting three case studies: a hypothetical scenario involving the electric grid, an attack on traffic management, and XZ Utils backdoor. Additionally, the study undertakes a criminological analysis to comprehend the criminal profiles driving such attacks, while also assessing their implications from a human rights perspective. Telegram has grown into a significant platform for news and information sharing, favored for its anonymity and minimal moderation. This openness, however, makes it vulnerable to misinformation and conspiracy theories. In this study, we explore the dynamics of conspiratorial narrative dissemination within Telegram, focusing on Italian and English landscapes. In particular, we leverage the mechanism of message forwarding within Telegram and collect two extensive datasets through snowball strategy. We adopt a network-based approach and build the Italian and English Telegram networks to reveal their respective communities. By employing topic modeling, we uncover distinct narratives and dynamics of misinformation spread. Results highlight differences between Italian and English conspiracy landscapes, with Italian discourse involving assorted conspiracy theories and alternative news sources intertwined with legitimate news sources, whereas English discourse is characterized by a more focused approach on specific narratives such as QAnon and political conspiracies. Finally, we show that our methodology exhibits robustness across initial seed selections, suggesting broader applicability. Today's practical, high performance Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus protocols operate in the partial synchrony model. However, existing protocols are inefficient when deployments are indeed partially synchronous. They deliver either low latency during fault-free, synchronous periods (good intervals) or robust recovery from events that interrupt progress (blips). At one end, traditional, view-based BFT protocols optimize for latency during good intervals, but, when blips occur, can suffer from performance degradation (hangovers) that can last beyond the return of a good interval. At the other end, modern DAG-based BFT protocols recover more gracefully from blips, but exhibit lackluster latency during good intervals. To close the gap, this work presents Autobahn, a novel high-throughput BFT protocol that offers both low latency and seamless recovery from blips. By combining a highly parallel asynchronous data dissemination layer with a low-latency, partially synchronous consensus mechanism, Autobahn (i) avoids the hangovers incurred by traditional BFT protocols and (ii) matches the throughput of state of the art DAG-based BFT protocols while cutting their latency in half, matching the latency of traditional BFT protocols.

Nakamoto's consensus protocol works in a permissionless model and tolerates Byzantine failures, but only offers probabilistic agreement. Recently, the Sandglass protocol has shown such weaker guarantees are not a necessary consequence of a permissionless model; yet, Sandglass only tolerates benign failures, and operates in an unconventional partially synchronous model. We present Gorilla Sandglass, the first Byzantine tolerant consensus protocol to guarantee, in the same synchronous model adopted by Nakamoto, deterministic agreement and termination with probability 1 in a permissionless setting. We prove the correctness of Gorilla by mapping executions that would violate agreement or termination in Gorilla to executions in Sandglass, where we know such violations are impossible. This paper presents Basil, the first transactional, leaderless Byzantine Fault Tolerant key-value store. Basil leverages ACID transactions to scalably implement the abstraction of a trusted shared log in the presence of Byzantine actors. Unlike traditional BFT approaches, Basil executes non-conflicting operations in parallel and commits transactions in a single round-trip during fault-free executions. Basil improves throughput over traditional BFT systems by four to five times, and is only four times slower than TAPIR, a non-Byzantine replicated system. Basil's novel recovery mechanism further minimizes the impact of failures: with 30% Byzantine clients, throughput drops by less than 25% in the worst-case., Comment: 24 pages. 7 Figures. This paper presents the design and implementation of Obladi, the first system to provide ACID transactions while also hiding access patterns. Obladi uses as its building block oblivious RAM, but turns the demands of supporting transactions into a performance opportunity. By executing transactions within epochs and delaying commit decisions until an epoch ends, Obladi reduces the amortized bandwidth costs of oblivious storage and increases overall system throughput. These performance gains, combined with new oblivious mechanisms for concurrency control and recovery, allow Obladi to execute OLTP workloads with reasonable throughput: it comes within 5x to 12x of a non-oblivious baseline on the TPC-C, SmallBank, and FreeHealth applications. In this note, we observe a safety violation in Zyzzyva and a liveness violation in FaB. To demonstrate these issues, we require relatively simple scenarios, involving only four replicas, and one or two view changes. In all of them, the problem is manifested already in the first log slot.

Government statistical agencies collect enormously valuable data on the nation's population and business activities. Wide access to these data enables evidence-based policy making, supports new research that improves society, facilitates training for students in data science, and provides resources for the public to better understand and participate in their society. These data also affect the private sector. For example, the Employment Situation in the United States, published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, moves markets. Nonetheless, government agencies are under increasing pressure to limit access to data because of a growing understanding of the threats to data privacy and confidentiality. "De-identification" - stripping obvious identifiers like names, addresses, and identification numbers - has been found inadequate in the face of modern computational and informational resources. Unfortunately, the problem extends even to the release of aggregate data statistics. This counter-intuitive phenomenon has come to be known as the Fundamental Law of Information Recovery. It says that overly accurate estimates of too many statistics can completely destroy privacy. One may think of this as death by a thousand cuts. Every statistic computed from a data set leaks a small amount of information about each member of the data set - a tiny cut. This is true even if the exact value of the statistic is distorted a bit in order to preserve privacy. Emails today are often encrypted, but only between mail servers---the vast majority of emails are exposed in plaintext to the mail servers that handle them. While better than no encryption, this arrangement leaves open the possibility of attacks, privacy violations, and other disclosures. Publicly, email providers have stated that default end-to-end encryption would conflict with essential functions (spam filtering, etc.), because the latter requires analyzing email text. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate that there is no conflict. We do so by designing, implementing, and evaluating Pretzel. Starting from a cryptographic protocol that enables two parties to jointly perform a classification task without revealing their inputs to each other, Pretzel refines and adapts this protocol to the email context. Our experimental evaluation of a prototype demonstrates that email can be encrypted end-to-end \emph{and} providers can compute over it, at tolerable cost: clients must devote some storage and processing, and provider overhead is roughly 5 times versus the status quo.

This paper introduces a unified model of consistency and isolation that minimizes the gap between how these guarantees are defined and how they are perceived. Our approach is premised on a simple observation: applications view storage systems as black-boxes that transition through a series of states, a subset of which are observed by applications. For maximum clarity, isolation and consistency guarantees should be expressed as constraints on those states. Instead, these properties are currently expressed as constraints on operation histories that are not visible to the application. We show that adopting a state-based approach to expressing these guarantees brings forth several benefits. First, it makes it easier to focus on the anomalies that a given isolation or consistency level allows (and that applications must deal with), rather than those that it proscribes. Second, it unifies the often disparate theories of isolation and consistency and provides a structure for composing these guarantees. We leverage this modularity to apply to transactions (independently of the isolation level under which they execute) the equivalence between causal consistency and session guarantees that Chockler et al. had proved for single operations. Third, it brings clarity to the increasingly crowded field of proposed consistency and isolation properties by winnowing spurious distinctions: we find that the recently proposed parallel snapshot isolation introduced by Sovran et al. is in fact a specific implementation of an older guarantee, lazy consistency (or PL-2+), introduced by Adya et al., Comment: 11 pages with 29 pages appendix

This paper presents a new application of logic programming to a real-life problem in hydraulic engineering. The work is developed as a collaboration of computer scientists and hydraulic engineers, and applies Constraint Logic Programming to solve a hard combinatorial problem. This application deals with one aspect of the design of a water distribution network, i.e., the valve isolation system design. We take the formulation of the problem by Giustolisi and Savic (2008) and show how, thanks to constraint propagation, we can get better solutions than the best solution known in the literature for the Apulian distribution network.
