Objectives: This study uses a nationally representative sample of adults to investigate racial-ethnic differences in reasons for cannabis use among those reporting past 12-month misuse of prescription opioids for pain relief. Methods: Data from the 2015-2019 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health were used to study 3,093 adults 18 to 49 years old reporting past 12-month pain-related prescription pain reliever (opioid) misuse. Logistic regressions assessed the association between past 12-month cannabis use – (non medical vs. any medical) – and multiple socio-demographic, psycho-social and drug use correlates. NSDUH analysis weights were applied to accommodate for the sampling design. Results: Half of individuals who reported misuse of prescription opioids for pain relief used cannabis in the past 12-months. In this sample of cannabis users, 87.6% (95%CI = 86.1, 88.9) used non-medically, and 12.4 (95%CI = 11.1, 13.9) used for both medical and recreational reasons. Individuals with past 12 months diagnosis of opioid use disorder were 1.8 (95%CI = 1.29, 2.63) times as likely to be medical cannabis users compared to those without a disorder. Conclusions: The findings indicate that medical cannabis might be an alternative for nearly one in eight individuals misusing pain relievers to alleviate their pain, primarily those with an opioid use disorder. Despite increased rates of cannabis use among males and non-Hispanic Whites in the general population, no gender or racial-ethnic differences were found in the selected sample. Future studies should investigate simultaneous use and the analgesic effects of co-use in this sample.

BACKGROUND In the United States, well-documented racial disparities in health outcomes are frequently attributed to racial bias and socioeconomic inequalities. However, it remains unknown whether racial disparities in mortality persist among those with higher socioeconomic status (SES) and occupational prestige. OBJECTIVE As the celebrity population is generally characterized by high levels of SES and occupational prestige, this study aimed to examine survival differences between black and white film celebrities. METHODS Using a Web-based, open-source encyclopedia (ie, Wikipedia), data for 5829 entries of randomly selected American film actors and actresses born between 1900 and 2000 were extracted. A Kaplan-Meier survival curve was conducted using 4356 entries to compare the difference in survival by race. A Cox semiparametric regression analysis examined whether adjusting for year of birth, gender, and cause of death influenced differences in survival by race. RESULTS Most celebrities were non-Hispanic white (3847/4352, 88.4%), male (3565/4352, 81.9%), and born in the United States (4187/4352, 96.2%). Mean age at death for black celebrities (64.1; 95% CI 60.6-67.5 years) was 6.4 years shorter than that for white celebrities (70.5; 95% CI 69.6-71.4 years; P CONCLUSIONS There is some evidence that racial disparities in all-cause mortality may persist at higher levels of SES, but this association was no longer significant in adjusted analyses. Further research is needed to examine if racial disparities in mortality are diminished at higher levels of SES among more representative populations.

Data on the duration of detectable Zika virus–specific IgM in infected persons are limited. Neutralizing antibody cross-reactivity occurs between Zika virus and related flaviviruses, but the degree to which this confounds diagnosis is uncertain. We tested serum specimens collected 12–19 months after illness onset from patients with confirmed Zika virus disease for Zika virus IgM and Zika virus and dengue virus neutralizing antibodies. Among 62 participants, 45 (73%) had detectable Zika virus IgM and 12 (19%) had an equivocal result. Although all patients tested had Zika virus neutralizing antibodies, 39 (63%) also had neutralizing antibodies against dengue virus; of those, 12 (19%) had 4-fold higher than Zika virus titer. Prolonged detection of IgM and neutralizing antibody cross-reactivity make it difficult to determine the timing of Zika virus infection and differentiate between related flaviviruses.

ObjectiveThe Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County (DOH-Miami-Dade) investigated 106 reported carbon monoxide (CO) exposures over a 9-day timeframe after Hurricane Irma. This report evaluates risk factors for CO poisoning and the importance of heightened surveillance following natural disasters.MethodsData on CO poisoning cases from September 9 to 18, 2017 were extracted from Merlin, the Florida Department of Health Surveillance System. Medical records were obtained and follow-up interviews were conducted to collect data on the confirmed CO poisoning cases. Data were analyzed using SAS v9.4.ResultsNinety-one of the 106 people exposed to CO met the case definition for CO poisoning: 64 confirmed, 7 probable, and 20 suspect cases. Eighty-eight percent of the affected individuals were evaluated in emergency departments and 11.7% received hyperbaric oxygen treatment. The most frequently reported symptoms included headache (53.3%), dizziness (50.7%), and nausea (46.7%). Three patients expired due to their exposure to CO.ConclusionsPost Hurricane Irma, the DOH-Miami-Dade investigated numerous cases for CO exposure. By understanding who is most likely to be impacted by CO and the impact of generators’ location on people’s health, education efforts can be tailored to the population most at risk and further CO exposures and related mortalities following natural disasters can be reduced. We assessed IgM detection in Zika patients from the 2016 outbreak in Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA. Of those with positive or equivocal IgM after 12-19 months, 87% (26/30) had IgM 6 months later. In a survival analysis, ≈76% had IgM at 25 months. Zika virus IgM persists for years, complicating serologic diagnosis.
