Abstract

How ought we to live with new technologies? What future do we want in light of the many changes they bring to human existence? At a time when responsible innovation is on everyone's lips and academics turn to applied ethics to tackle these issues, this book questions the lack of a strong and coherent ethics of the self within the current discipline of the philosophy of technology.Drawing on Jean-Paul Sartre's existential phenomenology, Michel Foucault's biopolitics, and Bernard Stiegler's philosophy of the amateur, Amélie Berger-Soraruff examines the crucial importance of developing a politics of the self in contemporary technoculture. Refreshingly original, this work frames Stiegler as a philosopher of the human and situates his contributions in continuity with those of Sartre and Foucault, while reasserting their relevance in a field of research that often prioritizes technological enhancement over individual emancipation. It presents Stiegler's thought as a contemporary echo of Sartrean existentialism and reflects on the Foucauldian elements of his philosophy. Extending Stiegler's views to the fields of media studies and STS, this book brilliantly nuances his portrayal of technoculture, which he perceived as increasingly alienating, yet not devoid of alternatives.

6. Impacts of Vegetation and Precipitation on Throughfall Heterogeneity in a Tropical Pre-Montane Transitional Cloud Forest

Abstract

Precipitation throughfall (TF) plays an important role in the water balance of tropical forests. This study used 164 gauges to quantify precipitation and TF variability in a tropical pre-montane transitional cloud forest on the Caribbean slope of the Cordillera Tilaran, Costa Rica, to identify the ecological and meteorological drivers of this variability. Daily TF measurements were taken from 28 June to 17 July 2012 and 12 June to 16 July 2013, for a total of 39 precipitation events. The total mean TF was 87.9 percent and TF at individual gauges ranged from 22.7 percent to 245.7 percent. Leaf area index (LAI) was calculated above each gauge using hemispheric photography for a mean study-site LAI of 7.7. There was no statistically significant relationship between LAI and TF. However, the amount of TF was positively correlated with precipitation intensity, while the variability of TF was negatively correlated with precipitation intensity. Our calculations indicate that at least 61 gauges are required to obtain mean TF estimates with less than 5 percent error. This study demonstrates that TF is highly spatially heterogeneous due to multiple compounding effects. RESUMEN Precipitacion interna a traves del dosel del bosque (TF) es una parte importante del equilibrio de agua en bosques tropicales. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo cuantificar la variabilidad de precipitacion y TF en un bosque nuboso transicional y premontano en el lado Caribe de la Cordillera Tilaran, especificamente en el Centro Soltis, Costa Rica, e identificar los factores ecologicos y meteorologicos en esta variabilidad. Mediante 164 pluviometros, se obtuvieron lecturas diarias de precipitacion interna, desde 28 Junio –17 Julio 2012 y 12 Junio–16 Julio 2013, abarcando 39 eventos pluviales. El promedio total de la precipitacion interna fue 87.9% y la precipitacion interna de los pluviometros fluctuaron entre 22.7% y 245.7%. Mediante fotografia hemisferica se calcularon los indices de area foliar (LAI) sobre cada pluviometro. El promedio del LAI fue 7.7. No hubo una relacion estadisticamente significativa entre LAI y TF; sin embargo, hubo una correlacion positiva entre la precipitacion interna y la intensidad de la precipitacion, y la variabilidad de la precipitacion interna correlaciono negativamente con la intensidad de la precipitacion. Nuestros resultados indican que al menos 61 pluviometros son necesarios para determinar los promedios de precipitacion interna con menos de 5% de error. Este estudio demuestra que la precipitacion interna es espacialmente heterogenea debido a muchos efectos amontonados.

7. Implementing a Rural Natural Experiment: A Protocol for Evaluating the Impacts of Food Coops on Food Consumption, Resident’s Health and Community Vitality

Abstract

Background: Local food environments are recognized by experts as a determinant of healthy eating. Food cooperatives (coop) can promote the accessibility to healthier foods and thus improve the health of the population, particularly in remote rural communities. Objective: To measure the effects of implementing a food coop in a disadvantaged community with poor access to food. We have two main research questions: (1). Does the establishment of a food coop in rural areas described as food deserts have an impact on accessibility, frequency of use, food consumption, food quality, and ultimately the health of individuals? (2). Does the establishment of a food coop in rural areas described as food deserts have an impact on food security and community vitality? Design: A natural experiment with a mixed pre/post method will be used. The sample is composed of households that came from geographically isolated communities (population: 215 to 885 inhabitants) which qualified as food deserts and located in rural areas of Quebec (Canada). All communities plan to open a food coop (in the years 2022–2023), and as their opening will be staggered over time, participants from communities with a new food coop (intervention) will be compared to communities awaiting the opening of their food coop (control). Data collection was carried out at three time points: (1) before; (2) 1 to 5 months after; and (3) 13 to 17 months after the opening of the coop. Questionnaires were used to measure sociodemographic variables, dietary intake, residents’ health, and community vitality. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with community stakeholders. Results: Few natural experiments have been conducted regarding the impact of implementing food coops. Gathering concrete data on the effectiveness and processes surrounding these interventions through natural experiments will help to quantify their impact and guide knowledge users and policymakers to make more informed decisions.
