Reports on the histopathologic features of external cervical resorption (ECR) in unerupted teeth are scarce. This article reports on 2 maxillary impacted canines from different patients that showed ECR lesions and were surgically removed and histologically evaluated. Case 1 showed symptoms associated with oral communication of the dental follicle and pulpal exposure. Radiographs and cone-beam computed tomographic imaging showed that resorption affected a large part of the root and the crown. Case 2 was asymptomatic, and the resorption cavity was restricted to the tooth crown. Both teeth were extracted and subjected to histologic processing and analysis. In case number 1, the coronal pulp was necrotic and infected, showing areas of exposure to the resorption channels. The apical pulp was vital and uninflamed. The pulp space was surrounded by a continuous pericanalar resorption-resistant sheet. Part of the resorbed area of dentin was occupied by inflamed granulation tissue. More apically, a network of trabecular bone was present in the resorbed area. In case number 2, the pulp around the resorbed area was uninflamed and vital. A large fraction of the lost dentin was replaced by trabecular bone, closely adapted to the irregularly resorbed dentin surface, and no inflammatory cells. Our findings indicate that impacted teeth with ECR may remain asymptomatic until associated with infection. Histologic features of resorption in impacted teeth were similar to those in erupted teeth. In the case associated with infection, the resorbed area was occupied by inflamed tissue and newly formed bone. Analysis and automation of business processes are a relevant topic in Industry 4.0. This document describes a framework called BP-M* for the analysis, restructuring and implementation of business processes, starting with the creation of a process model and ending with the implementation of the process itself on a workflow management system. The BP-M* framework has been applied to a real case study, the production of fabrics for the collection that will be distributed worldwide by an Italian woolen mill. OBJECTIVE: Recently, Zirconia and polyaryletherketone (PEEK) have attracted increasing interest as reliable and safe materials in dental applications, mainly because of their good biomechanical characteristics. The aim of this study was to investigate the response to different loads by prosthetic frameworks for supported fixed partial dentures (FPDs), thus simulating osseointegrated implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The specimens were divided into two groups (n= 5 each). Group A: FDPs in zirconia-ceramic; Group B: FDPs in PEEK-composite. These 2 groups were subjected to vertical loads so to evaluate structural deformation; then, they have been analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at different magnifications. RESULTS: In tested samples, different types of mechanical failures have been observed. In Zirconia-specimens, chipping is the main failure noticed in this study, mostly in distal margins of the structure. Also, peek-specimens show failure and fracture. CONCLUSIONS: Zirconia and PEEK could be considered both good materials, but several investigations are needed to use these materials as an alternative to metals for fixed partial dentures. This article reports on the management of a large median symmetrical lesion of the anterior palate, which was clinically and radiographically diagnosed as an infected nasopalatine duct cyst. However, histopathology demonstrated it to be a radicular cyst of endodontic origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives. This study describes a method for the measurement of the marginal gap between abutment and prosthetic crown and analyses the influence of different variables influencing the fitting precision. Methods. The extent of marginal gap between titanium or dental abutment with different implant types composed of sintered titanium, milled titanium alloy, zirconia and translucent zirconia was evaluated. The gap at implant-abutment interface was analysed by optical stereomicroscope observation. To optimise measurement precision, samples were oriented with a specific inclination angle and properly stained to limit reflection phenomena. Captured images was processed by ImageJ virtual measuring instruments. The correlation between various factors including type of tooth (molar, canine), stump type (artificial, natural), prosthesis type (sintered titanium, titanium, zirconia and translucent zirconia), and gap type (proximal, distal) was statistically evaluated performing the study of variance (ANOVA). Results. There was a significant correlation between the type of abutment and the different materials used for implant on fitting accuracy. The variables type of tooth and gap type do not significantly correlate with the marginal gap size. Results of the ANOVA test demonstrated that the association titanium abutment and titanium implant represent the best fitting with a minimum level of marginal gap at the junction interface. Conclusions. The measurement of marginal gap with stereoscopic observation associated with the analysis of variance has been demonstrated to be a valuable method for marginal gap evaluation. This approach demonstrated that the best abutment-implant fitting is represented by the association between titanium abutment and titanium implant. This model could be used to perform preliminary evaluation in order to help the clinician to select the best match of components for prosthetic implant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Patients undergoing cardiac surgery are at risk of perioperative low cardiac output syndrome due to postoperative myocardial dysfunction. Myocardial dysfunction in patients undergoing cardiac surgery is a potential indication for the use of levosimendan, a calcium sensitizer with 3 beneficial cardiovascular effects (inotropic, vasodilatory, and anti-inflammatory), which appears effective in improving clinically relevant outcomes.Design: Double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter randomized trial.Setting: Tertiary care hospitals.Interventions: Cardiac surgery patients (n = 1,000) with postoperative myocardial dysfunction (defined as patients with intraaortic balloon pump and/or high-dose standard inotropic support) will be randomized to receive a continuous infusion of either levosimendan (0.05-0.2 μg/[kg min]) or placebo for 24-48 hours.Measurements and Main Results: The primary end point will be 30-day mortality. Secondary end points will be mortality at 1 year, time on mechanical ventilation, acute kidney injury, decision to stop the study drug due to adverse events or to start open-label levosimendan, and length of intensive care unit and hospital stay. We will test the hypothesis that levosimendan reduces 30-day mortality in cardiac surgery patients with postoperative myocardial dysfunction.Conclusions: This trial is planned to determine whether levosimendan could improve survival in patients with postoperative low cardiac output syndrome.
