10. Effects of cluster diffusion on the island density and size distribution in submonolayer island growth

Abstract

The effects of cluster diffusion on the submonolayer island density and island-size distribution are studied for the case of irreversible growth of compact islands on a 2D substrate. In our model, we assume instantaneous coalescence of circular islands, while the cluster mobility is assumed to exhibit power-law decay as a function of island-size with exponent mu. Results are presented for mu = 1/2, 1, and 3/2 corresponding to cluster diffusion via Brownian motion, correlated evaporation-condensation, and edge-diffusion respectively, as well as for higher values including mu = 2,3, and 6. We also compare our results with those obtained in the limit of no cluster mobility corresponding to mu = infinity. In agreement with theoretical predictions of power-law behavior of the island-size distribution (ISD) for mu < 1, for mu = 1/2 we find Ns({\theta}) ~ s^{-\tau} (where Ns({\theta}) is the number of islands of size s at coverage {\theta}) up to a cross-over island-size S_c. However, the value of {\tau} obtained in our simulations is higher than the mean-field (MF) prediction {\tau} = (3 - mu)/2. Similarly, the value of the exponent {\zeta} corresponding to the dependence of S_c on the average island-size S (e.g. S_c ~ S^{\zeta}) is also significantly higher than the MF prediction {\zeta} = 2/(mu+1). A generalized scaling form for the ISD is also proposed for mu < 1, and using this form excellent scaling is found for mu = 1/2. However, for finite mu >= 1 neither the generalized scaling form nor the standard scaling form Ns({\theta}) = {\theta} /S^2 f(s/S) lead to scaling of the entire ISD for finite values of the ratio R of the monomer diffusion rate to deposition flux. Instead, the scaled ISD becomes more sharply peaked with increasing R and coverage. Abstract

The effects of shadowing in oblique incidence metal (100) epitaxial growth are studied using a simplified model. We find that many of the features observed in Cu(100) growth, including the existence of a transition from anisotropic mounds to ripples perpendicular to the beam, can be explained purely by geometrical effects. We also show that the formation of (111) facets is crucial to the development of ripples at large angles of incidence. 14. Synchronous relaxation algorithm for parallel kinetic Monte Carlo

Abstract

We investigate the applicability of the synchronous relaxation (SR) algorithm to parallel kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of simple models of thin-film growth. A variety of techniques for optimizing the parallel efficiency are also presented. We find that the parallel efficiency is determined by three main factors $-$ the calculation overhead due to relaxation iterations to correct boundary events in neighboring processors, the (extreme) fluctuations in the number of events per cycle in each processor, and the overhead due to interprocessor communications. Due to the existence of fluctuations and the requirement of global synchronization, the SR algorithm does not scale, i.e. the parallel efficiency decreases logarithmically as the number of processors increases. The dependence of the parallel efficiency on simulation parameters such as the processor size, domain decomposition geometry, and the ratio $D/F$ of the monomer hopping rate $D$ to the deposition rate $F$ is also discussed., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

The standard kinetic Monte Carlo algorithm is an extremely efficient method to carry out serial simulations of dynamical processes such as thin-film growth. However, in some cases it is necessary to study systems over extended time and length scales, and therefore a parallel algorithm is desired. Here we describe an efficient, semi-rigorous synchronous sublattice algorithm for parallel kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. The accuracy and parallel efficiency are studied as a function of diffusion rate, processor size, and number of processors for a variety of simple models of epitaxial growth. The effects of fluctuations on the parallel efficiency are also studied. 25. Kinetically driven island morphology in growth on strained Cu(100).

Abstract

We study the effects of strain on the monomer and dimer diffusion mechanisms and island morphology during the growth of Cu on a biaxially strained Cu(100) substrate. We find an approximately linear dependence of the activation barriers on strain. In particular, while hopping is favored for compressive and/or small (<2%) tensile strain, for greater than 2% tensile strain, the exchange mechanism is favored. We then present the results of temperature-accelerated dynamics simulations of submonolayer growth at 200 K. For the case of 2% compressive strain we find that, as in previous kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of Cu/Ni(100) growth, the competition between island growth and multi-atom relaxation ("pop-out") events leads to an island morphology with a mixture of open and closed steps. At slightly higher coverage, island coalescence then leads to elongated islands. However, annealing leads to a significant decrease in the number of open steps. In contrast, for the case of 8% tensile strain, only one large strongly anisotropic island is formed. Surprisingly, we find that despite the large strain, the island anisotropy is not due to energetics but is instead due to anisotropic attachment barriers that favor the exchange-mediated attachment of monomers to corners over close-packed step-edges. An explanation for the asymmetry in attachment barriers is provided. Our results provide a new general kinetic mechanism for the formation of anisotropic islands in the presence of isotropic diffusion and tensile strain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International audience; Background The effects of a dietary supplementation with the vegetable omega-3 α-linolenic acid (ALA) on cardiovascular homeostasis are unclear. In this context, it would be interesting to assess the effects of camelina oil. Methods In a double-blind placebo-controlled randomized study, treated essential hypertensive patients with metabolic syndrome received during 6 months either cyclodextrin-complexed camelina oil containing ≈ 1.5 g ALA/day (n = 40), or an isocaloric placebo (n = 41), consisting in the same quantity of cyclodextrins and wheat starch. Anthropometric data, plasma lipids, glycemia, insulinemia, creatininemia, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and n-3, n-6 and n-9 fatty acids in erythrocyte membranes were measured. Peripheral and central blood pressures, arterial stiffness, carotid intima-media thickness and brachial artery endothelium-dependent flow-mediated dilatation and endothelium-independent dilatation were assessed. 48. Les secrets du microbiote - Des clés pour contrôler sa santé

Abstract

Des découvertes majeures sur le microbiote ont été faites au cours de ces quinze dernières années. Ces découvertes sont à l'origine d'avancées décisives dans la compréhension de nombreuses maladies. Ainsi, en plus du microbiote intestinal, il a été montré l'existence de microbiotes dans nos tissus, notre sang et nos tumeurs! Ces microbiotes sont'alimentés'par le passage permanent des bactéries de l'intestin mais aussi des poumons, des voies urinaires, etc, vers nos tissus. De ce fait, l'intérieur de notre corps que l'on a cru longtemps'stérile'est en réalité habité par de nombreux microorganismes. Ces bactéries résidantes dialoguent pour le meilleur et parfois pour le pire avec nos propres cellules. Il a été démontré qu'il était possible de contrôler le dialogue entre ces microbiotes et nos cellules via l'alimentation, la transplantation fécale, l'administration de prébiotiques ou de probiotiques : cela a permis la mise au point de nouvelles stratégies thérapeutiques. A titre d'exemple, dans le champ du cancer, la modification du microbiote intestinal ou du microbiote de la tumeur permet d'accroître l'efficacité de certaines immunothérapies. Ce livre décrit cette révolution médicale en cours, les perspectives qui en découlent et prodiguent des conseils pratiques pour tirer profit des connaissances acquises. Le Professeur Jacques Amar et son équipe ont été à l'origine de la découverte du microbiote sanguin et tissulaire. Ces découvertes publiées au début des années 2010 ont depuis été confirmées par de nombreuses équipes de recherche avec à la clé des avancées majeures dans la compréhension de nombreuses maladies notamment le cancer et la réponse au traitement anticancéreux.
