In this study, seed-surface-associated bacteria from fresh fruits of Capsicum spp. were analyzed to explore potential isolates for biocontrol of phytopathogenic fungal strains. A total of 76 bacterial isolates were obtained from three different species of chili pepper (C. annuum L., C. pubescens R. & P., and C. chinense Jacq.), and two isolates were selected via mycelial growth inhibition assays based on their production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) against six fungal strains. Genomic analysis identified these isolates as Bacillus altitudinis CH05, with a chromosome size of 3,687,823 bp and with 41.25% G+C, and Bacillus tropicus CH13, with a chromosome size of 5,283,706 bp and with 35.24% G+C. Both bacterial strains showed high mycelial growth inhibition capacities against Sclerotium rolfsii, Sclerotinia sp., Rhizoctonia solani, and Alternaria alternata but lower inhibition capacities against Colletotrichum gloesporoides and Fusarium oxysporum. VOC identification was carried out after 24 h of fermentation with 64 VOCs for B. altitudinis CH05 and 53 VOCs for B. tropicus CH13. 2,5-Dimethyl pyrazine and acetoin had the highest relative abundance values in both bacterial strains. Our findings revealed that seed-surface-associated bacteria on Capsicum spp. have the metabolic ability to produce VOCs for biocontrol of fungal strains and have the potential to be used in sustainable agriculture. Neonicotinoids are a group of insecticides developed in the 1980s, reaching extensive use in agriculture in the 1990s due to their effectiveness against pests in various types of crops. In 2014, their use reached 25% of the global market. In the last decade, studies on their possible effects have been conducted, leading to bans and regulations in several European Union countries. Their persistence in soil and water can result in chronic exposure in aquatic and terrestrial organisms, including pollinator species. The accumulation of these compounds in the environment can disrupt ecosystems and affect the health of humans, plants, and animals. This review presents current knowledge on neonicotinoids, their mechanisms of action, and their transport in ecological spheres. Their presence in water and soil is evidenced, with specific concentrations reported in various regions. Their effects on non-target organisms, including aquatic animals and humans, can be negative, causing direct and indirect neurological and renal problems after exposure. The competitive colonization of bacteria on similar ecological niches has a significant impact during their establishment. The synthesis speeds of different chemical classes of molecules during early competitive colonization can reduce the number of competitors through metabolic effects. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time that Kosakonia cowanii Cp1 previously isolated from the seeds of Capsicum pubescens R. P. produced volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during competitive colonization against Pectobacterium aroidearum SM2, affecting soft rot symptoms in serrano chili (Capsicum annuum L.). The pathogen P. aroidearum SM2 was isolated from the fruits of C. annuum var. Serrano with soft rot symptoms. The genome of the SM2 strain carries a 5,037,920 bp chromosome with 51.46% G + C content and 4925 predicted protein-coding genes. It presents 12 genes encoding plant-cell-wall-degrading enzymes (PCDEWs), 139 genes involved in five types of secretion systems, and 16 genes related to invasion motility. Pathogenic essays showed soft rot symptoms in the fruits of C. annuum L., Solanum lycopersicum, and Physalis philadelphica and the tubers of Solanum tuberosum. During the growth phases of K. cowanii Cp1, a mix of VOCs was identified by means of HS-SPME-GC-MS. Of these compounds, 2,5-dimethyl-pyrazine showed bactericidal effects and synergy with acetoin during the competitive colonization of K. cowanii Cp1 to completely reduce soft rot symptoms. This work provides novel evidence grounding a better understanding of bacterial interactions during competitive colonization on plant tissue, where VOC synthesis is essential and has a high potential capacity to control pathogenic microorganisms in agricultural systems. Spodoptera frugiperda is the main pest of maize. One of the alternatives proposed for its control is the implementation of products of botanical origin, such as those derived from Ricinus communis. In this work, the insecticidal and insectistatic activities of methanolic and hydrolyzed methanolic extracts of the aerial parts of R. communis and kaempferol against S. frugiperda are evaluated. The methanolic extract presented a larval mortality rate of 55% and an accumulated mortality rate of 65% starting at 4000 ppm, with LC50 values of 3503 (larvae) and 2851 (accumulated); meanwhile, from a concentration of 1000 ppm, a decrease in pupa weight at 24 h of 20.5 mg was observed when compared to the control. The hydrolyzed methanolic extract presented a larval mortality and accumulated mortality rate of 60% from a concentration of 1000 ppm, and a decrease in pupa weight at 24 h of 35.31 mg was observed, when compared to the control. For the compound kaempferol 3-β-D-glucopyranoside, a larval mortality rate of 65% and an accumulated mortality rate of 80% were observed from 800 ppm, with LC50 values of 525.2 (larvae) and 335.6 ppm (accumulated); meanwhile, at 300 ppm, a decrease in pupa weight of 25.59 mg after 24 h was observed when compared to the control. Sargassum spp. affects the Caribbean shores; thus, its remotion or valorization is a priority. This work aimed to synthesize a low-cost magnetically retrievable Hg+2 adsorbent functionalized with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) based on Sargassum. The Sargassum was solubilized to synthesize by co-precipitation a magnetic composite. A central composite design was assessed to maximize the adsorption of Hg+2. The solids yield magnetically attracted mass, and the saturation magnetizations of the functionalized composite were 60.1 ± 17.2%, 75.9 ± 6.6%, and 1.4 emu g−1. The functionalized magnetic composite yielded 29.8 ± 0.75 mg Hg+2 g−1 of chemisorption after 12 h, pH 5, and 25 °C achieving 75% Hg+2 adsorption after four reuse cycles. Crosslinking and functionalization with Fe3O4 and EDTA created differences in surface roughness as well as the thermal events of the composites. Beef is a fundamental part of the human diet, but it is highly susceptible to microbiological and physicochemical deterioration which decrease its shelf life. This work aimed to formulate an active edible film (AEF) incorporated with amino-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (A-MSN) loaded with Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens Kunth) essential oil (OEO) and to evaluate its effect as a coating on fresh beef quality during refrigerated storage. The AEF was based on amaranth protein isolate (API) and chitosan (CH) (4:1, w/w), to which OEO emulsified or encapsulated in A-MSN was added. The tensile strength (36.91 ± 1.37 MPa), Young's modulus (1354.80 ± 64.6 MPa), and elongation (4.71%) parameters of AEF made it comparable with synthetic films. The antimicrobial activity of AEF against E. coli O157:H7 was improved by adding 9% (w/w) encapsulated OEO, and interactions of glycerol and A-MSN with the polymeric matrix were observed by FT-IR spectroscopy. In fresh beef, after 42 days, AEF reduced the population growth (Log CFU/cm2, relative to uncoated fresh beef) of Brochothrix thermosphacta (5.5), Escherichia coli (3.5), Pseudomonas spp. (2.8), and aerobic mesophilic bacteria (6.8). After 21 days, odor acceptability of coated fresh beef was improved, thus, enlarging the shelf life of the beef and demonstrating the preservation capacity of this film. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The growing demand for minimally processed foods with a long shelf life and environmentally friendly materials has forced industry to develop new technologies for food preservation and handling. The use of edible films has emerged as an alternative solution to this problem, and mixtures of carbohydrates and proteins, may be formulated to improve their properties. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of protein cross-linking with transglutaminase (TG) of two varieties of quinoa protein isolate (Chenopodium quinoa) [Willd (QW), and Pasankalla (QP)] on the physicochemical and barrier properties of edible films based on chitosan (CT)-quinoa protein. The evaluated properties were water vapor permeability (WVP), solubility, adsorption, roughness determined by atomic force microscopy, and the interactions among the main film components determined by Raman spectroscopy. The results indicated that TG interacted with lysine of QW and QP. CT:QW (1:5, w/w) showed the lowest solubility (14.02 ± 2.17% w/w). WVP varied with the composition of the mixture. The WVP of CT:quinoa protein ranged from 2.85 to 9.95 × 10−11 g cm Pa−1 cm−2 s−1 without TG, whereas adding TG reduced this range to 2.42–4.69 × 10−11 g cm Pa−1 cm−2 s−1. The addition of TG to CT:QP (1:10, w/w) reduced the film surface roughness from 8.0 ± 0.5 nm to 4.4 ± 0.3 nm. According to the sorption isotherm, the addition of TG to CT-QW films improved their stability [monolayer (Xm) = 0.13 ± 0.02 %]. Films with a higher amount of cross-linking showed the highest improvement in the evaluated physical properties, but interactions among proteins that were catalyzed by TG depended on the protein source and profile.
