Extreme climatic events trigger changes in ecosystems with potential negative impacts for people. These events may provide an opportunity for environmental managers and decision-makers to improve the governance of social-ecological systems, however there is conflicting evidence regarding whether these actors are indeed able to change governance after extreme climatic events. In addition, the majority of research to date has focused on changes in specific policies or organizations after crises. A broader investigation of governance actors' activities is needed to more fully understand whether or not crises trigger change. Here we demonstrate the use of a social network analysis of management and decision-making forums (e.g. meetings, partnerships) to reveal the effects of an extreme climatic event on governance of the Great Barrier Reef over an eight-year period. To assess potential shifts in action, we examine the topics of forums and the relative participation and influence of diverse governance actors before, during, and after two back-to-back mass coral bleaching events in 2016 and 2017. Our analysis reveals that there is little change in the topics that receive attention, and in the relative participation and influence of different actor groups in the region. Our research demonstrates that network analysis of forums is useful for analyzing whether or not actors' activities and priorities evolve over time. Our results provide empirical evidence that governance actors struggle to leverage extreme climate events as windows of opportunity and further research is needed to identify alternative opportunities to improve governance.

Persons aging with a mobility disability encounter barriers to exercise engagement including accessibility to transportation, facilities, and adequately trained instructors. A tele-exercise platform could reduce these barriers as it utilizes video conferencing to enable remote exercise classes. For this feasibility study, participants ( N = 19; 40+ years of age) who identified as aging with a mobility impairment for at least five years or longer, participated in a seated, one-on-one, gentle movement exercise class via web-based video conferencing (OneClick.chat). We present data from semi-structured interviews regarding participants’ perceptions of the tele-exercise class. Participants discussed their perceptions of benefits, concerns, technology usability, and intent to adopt. Participants expressed positive attitudes, overall, stating that they would likely benefit physically, emotionally, and socially from regular participation in a tele-exercise exercise program, and most expressed an interest in adopting such a program. Participants also expressed concern about the usability of the technology platform. We provide design recommendations to address participants’ concerns. These findings provide guidance for how to improve the design of a remote tele-exercise class for adults aging with mobility disability.

Co-production has become a cornerstone of research within the sustainability sciences, motivating collaborations of diverse actors to conduct research in the service of societal and policy change. This review examines theoretical and empirical literature from sustainability science, public administration, and science and technology studies (STS) with the intention of advancing the theory and practice of co-production within sustainability science. We argue that co-production must go beyond stakeholder engagement by scientists to the more deliberate design of societal transitions. Co-production can contribute to such transitions by shifting the institutional arrangements that govern relationships between knowledge and power, science and society, and state and citizens. We highlight critical weaknesses in conceptualizations of co-production within sustainability sciences with respect to power, politics, and governance. We offer suggestions for how this can be rectified through deeper engagement with public administration and STS to offer a broad vision for enhancing the use, design, and practice of a more reflexive co-production in sustainability science.
