Easton, History Professor, Papers, 1860-1890, 1935-1960. Lecture notes, clippings, notes, and drafts for A History of European Civilization, Volume 1, and other miscellaneous papers of Jason C. Easton, former professor of history at West Virginia University (WVU). The collection also contains Dr. Easton's correspondence with several former students serving in the military during World War II dating from ca. 1942-1946. Other WWII items include ration books for food, gasoline, and liquor; and two unpublished sound recordings on disc of a radio discussion by J.C. Easton and Clark Ennis regarding the question of which nation the United States should support following World War II, Germany or Russia. There is also an album of photographs, some indentified, of members of the Young family of Charleston, West Virginia, dating from ca. 1860-1890. Addenda to the collection, in two document cases, include Lieutenant Clark Easton's World War I ledger containing class notes and instructional material from an Army Intelligence School, for period 30 September 1918 to 9 November 1918; and a listing of WVU students and graduates killed in World War II. Addenda also include items collected by Easton, including three Civil War documents: 1) payment voucher for Captain John D. Young for work on Bateau No. 16 on the Kanawha River (1962), 2)An eulogy/composition regarding "Stonewall Jackson" by Virginia Military Institute cadet, Samuel Francis Atwill (1863) who was mortally wounded at the Battle of New Market on 15 May 1864, and 3) a three-page narrative by unknown soldier regarding Shenandoah Valley campaign (January to July 1864). Dayton, Correspondence and Catalogs regarding Purchase of Rare Books, ca. 1898-2007. Correspondence of Arthur Spencer Dayton (1887-1948), prominent Charleston lawyer and avid book collector. The majority of the correspondence is with American and English book dealers and concerns Dayton's purchase of rare books including Shakespeare's four folios as well as other rare Shakespeare volumes; a comprehensive collection of Mark Twain rare editions; Jane Austen rare materials; the 15th century biblical text ; and many more rare volumes. Dayton's collection of rare books forms the basis of the West Virginia and Regional History Center's Rare Books Collection. Most correspondence takes the form of copies of business letters, but also includes personal letters to friends and colleagues. The personal letters concern Dayton's view on current politics and the law, health matters, philanthropy, religion, and legal decisions. The content of the boxes of correspondence is as follows: Box 1, ca. 1898-1960; Box 2, 1937-1940; Box 3, 1941-1945; Box 4, 1946-1948; and Box 5, 1949-1952, and undated. The correspondence in Box 5 is mostly from Dayton's wife, Ruth, regarding insuring art and rare materials, as well as the donations of art and rare materials through her charity. Addendum of 2018 January, Box 5, folders 3 and 4, includes clippings, printed material, manuscript notes, correspondence, etc. found within the books donated by Arthur Dayton to the Center's Rare Books Collection. Many of the items seem to relate to the books and/or their acquisition, and most are in enclosures that show the call number of the related book. Also includes transcription, scans, and notes (ca. 2007) regarding three letters that were found in the book collection, two from Samuel Clemens and one from Brander Matthews. Correspondence, appointment, and notice. Correspondence includes a letter from Gideon D. Camden to Pierpont (1841); a letter from Frances Pierpont Pryor (F.H. Pierpont's granddaughter) to Professor Charles Ambler regarding documents of her grandfathers' which she is sending him and documents she will keep (1952); and a letter from Charles MacCarthy to W.H. Siviter, regarding Pierpont papers used by MacCarthy in writing his Lincoln's Plan of Reconstruction (1899). Also includes Francis H. Pierpont's appointment to the West Virginia University Board of Regents (1869) and a Society of the Army of West Virginia reunion notice (1884).

Charles Henry Ambler (1876-1957) was a professor of history at West Virginia University and the author of numerous books about American and West Virginia history, including The Life and Diary of John Floyd (1918). Collection contains some of Ambler's research materials for this biography of Floyd, who was a soldier and surgeon in the Virginia militia in the early nineteenth century and the governor of Virginia from 1830 to 1834. One folder contains letters and notes from 1912 and 1913 related to Ambler's efforts to locate manuscript material related to Floyd and a partial typescript draft of Ambler's biography with handwritten annotations. Two additional folders contain typescript copies of letters that Ambler presumably collected during his research. Letters from 1778 to 1782 are chiefly from William Davies, William Preston, and Thomas Jefferson and primarily relate to the Revolutionary War and Virginia militia. Materials from 1830 to 1834 consist of letters between Floyd and John Tyler, Littleton Tazewell, Thomas Gilmer, and other mid-nineteenth-century politicians. Topics include Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, national and Virginia state politics, the status of Virginia, and the Nullification Crisis. It is unclear where the original manuscripts of these two folders of letters are located or when the typescripts were made.
