The utilization of nitrogen by sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum L.) fertilized with sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.) as green manure and ammonia sulfate and its residual effect during two cuts were evaluated using 15N tracer technique. The amounts of 195.8 kg and 70 kg of N by hectare were added respectively as sunn hemp (SH) and ammonium sulfate (AS), in the following treatments: Control; AS-15N; SH-15N + AS; SH-15N; AS-15N + SH. Five samples of +3 leaves were collected and two meters of the sugar cane plants were cut to estimate the productivity. The experiments were set in randomized blocks design with four replicates. The cane stalk yields in the first cut were higher in the treatment with two both N sources (organic and mineral), however not differing between them. The highest fertilizer contributions on nitrogen to sugarcane crop were observed eight months after sugarcane planting for treatments containing green manure without mineral N, and green manure with mineral N. The largest nitrogen recovery was observed during the first harvest, 18 months after planting: 34.4% in the treatment containing mineral fertilizer and 40.0% in the mineral N plus green manure N treatment. It more nitrogen in the sugar cane ratoon was originated from the green manure treatment 4.8%, while only 1.7% was observed in mineral N source. The presence of green manure crop and mineral N applied together promoting increases in Ca and Mg contents, Sum of Bases, pH, and Base Saturation, with a decline in potential acidity.

This intervention follow-up study evaluated anxiety and stress levels and self-perceived happiness of individuals linked to the health field who did not practice Tai Chi and compared these variables before and after practicing this art. One hundred twenty-three participants were subdivided into two groups: G1) Older health professionals (n=41) and G2) Younger pre-university students interested in the health field (n=82). Participants received a 60-minute Tai Chi class. The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14) was applied before the practice, and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Andrews Face Scale were used before and after the class. Generalized linear models and the Bowker symmetry test were applied for data analysis. 46.3% and 30.5% of participants in G1 and G2 had mild stress levels, and 43.9% and 46.3% had moderate stress levels, respectively. After practicing Tai Chi, both groups presented significantly lower mean anxiety scores. In G1, 31.7% of participants went from moderate to mild anxiety levels after practice, 19.5% from severe to moderate, and 7.3% from severe to mild. In G2, 28.2% of participants went from moderate to mild anxiety levels after practice, 18.3% from severe to moderate, and 6.1% from severe to mild. Furthermore, 100.0% of individuals in G1 and 96.3% in G2 were happy after the class. Tai Chi was effective in reducing anxiety levels and improving self-perceived happiness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Comparar três medidas (kappa, porcentagem geral de concordância e índice dice) utilizadas para se determinar a reprodutibilidade do diagnóstico da cárie em levantamentos epidemiológicos, sob diferentes níveis de detecção da doença. Onze examinadores com experiência prévia em levantamentos epidemiológicos foram submetidos a um processo teórico-clínico de calibração. Dois níveis de detecção da cárie foram adotados: Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) e OMS com inclusão de lesões iniciais em esmalte (OMS + LI). Os exames foram realizados em 23 crianças de 6-7 anos de idade com e sem atividade da doença. A análise dos dados foi realizada mediante dois limiares: OMS e OMS + LI. Valores médios dos índices kappa, porcentagem geral de concordância e dice foram considerados altos (>0,90), à exceção do índice dice para o limiar OMS + LI (0,69). O kappa, por ser um índice de concordância ajustado, pode ser considerado como instrumento de escolha para a calibração dos examinadores. Entretanto, na impossibilidade de seu uso, recomenda-se a utilização da porcentagem geral de concordância associada ao índice dice, a fim de direcionar e aprimorar os examinadores no exame das lesões cariosas.

Nitrogen (15N) released from sunnhemp (Crotalaria juncea), velvet bean (Mucuna aterrima) and from Phaseolus bean residues was evaluated after incubation of the plant material in an Eutrudox and a Paleudalf, in a greenhouse experiment with pots containing 6 kg of air dried soil. Dry matter equivalent to 13 Mg ha-1 of Phaseolus bean residues and the same amount of above ground parts of the leguminous species, associated to 2.7 and 2.2 Mg ha-1 of roots of sunnhemp and velvet bean respectively, were incorporated into the soil. A completely randomized experimental design was adopted, with treatments arranged in a 2 3 + 1 factorial, replicated three times. The treatments were the following: two soils (Eutrudox and Paleudalf) and three plant materials: two green-manures (sunnhemp or velvet bean), and Phaseolus bean residues, besides one control without plant incorporation into the soil. For the green-manure treatments there were two sub-treatments for each legume species, with 15N labeling of either shoots or roots. Soil moisture was maintained relatively constant during the experiment al period and the treatments were sampled weekly during 49 days. Total mineral nitrogen in the soil, as well as that derived from the legume plants were determined by isotope dilution. Nitrogen from the velvet bean accounted for a greater proportion of the soil inorganic N; shoots were responsible for most of N accumulated. Dry bean residues caused immobilization of inorganic N. The leguminous species added were intensively and promptly mineralized preserving the soil native nitrogen. Mineralization of the legume plant N was greater in the Paleudalf soil than in the Eutrudox.

Este trabalho avaliou o comportamento de 6 crianças com história de não - colaboração durante tratamento odontológico, que passaram por 5 sessões odontológicas, nas quais empregou-se o placebo ou o diazepam de maneira duplo - cega, além de estratégias psicológicas de manejo do comportamento (distração, explicação, reforçamento e estabelecimento de regras). As sessões foram filmadas em vídeo - tape, com marcas sonoras a cada 15 segundos, indicativas dos momentos em que os comportamentos emitidos pelos participantes (choro, movimentos de corpo e/ou cabeça, fuga e esquiva) e as estratégias de manejo do comportamento seriam registrados. Os resultados mostraram que o medicamento na dose utilizada foi eficaz para controlar os comportamentos de 1 participante, sendo que os demais não permitiram a realização do tratamento e exibiram aumento crescente da resistência ao tratamento. Parece necessário que a criança seja auxiliada a enfrentar a situação de tratamento nas sessões iniciais, impedindo o aumento da resistência.

The objective of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of three surface treatments and two adhesive systems on the shear bond strength of old and freshly placed amalgam. The results suggested that the intact amalgam showed a significantly higher strength than repaired groups and the strongest repaired specimens were made when the amalgam surfaces were roughened with a diamond bur or microetcher. The adhesive systems showed no significant differences on bond strength with the same superficial texture.

O presente estudo foi realizado no município de Atibaia, maior produtor de morangos do Estado de São Paulo, com o objetivo de avaliar a profundidade efetiva do sistema radicular do morangueiro em diferentes níveis de água e coberturas do solo. O experimento foi instalado em esquema fatorial 2 x 2 (coberturas do solo e níveis de água). Como coberturas do solo foram utilizados os plásticos transparente e preto. As irrigações foram realizadas sempre que o potencial de água no solo atingia -0,010 e -0,070 MPa, a 10 cm de profundidade. As amostragens de raiz foram realizadas ao lado da planta, de 10 em 10 cm até 60 cm de profundidade, com trado tipo caneca com 7 cm de diâmetro, aos 159 dias após o plantio, com cinco repetições. Os resultados obtidos em comprimento de raiz (cm) por unidade de volume do solo (cm³) indicam maior concentração de raízes nas camadas superficiais. As coberturas do solo e níveis de água não influenciaram no comprimento de raízes nas faixas de profundidade do solo avaliadas. Para fins de irrigação, a profundidade efetiva do sistema radicular foi de 30 cm.

Avaliaram-se os danos causados por percevejos e lagartas em cultivares e linhagens de soja de ciclos precoce e semiprecoce, em experimentos instalados em campo, na Estação Experimental de Ribeirão Preto (Instituto Agronômico, SP), nos anos agrícolas 1995/96 e 1996/97. A infestação de percevejos, com predominância de Piezodorus guildinii (West.), foi mais intensa no primeiro ano. Lagartas de Anticarsia gemmatalis Hüb. ocorreram na área experimental apenas no primeiro ano. Nos genótipos de ciclo precoce (110 dias) ('IAS 5', 'IAC 17', IAC 90-3395, IAC 93-345, IAC 93-386), o desfolhamento causado por A. gemmatalis variou de 11,7% ('IAC 17') a 28,3% (IAC 90-3395). Os danos causados por percevejos foram avaliados por meio de três critérios: retenção foliar, danos nas vagens e produção. As linhagens IAC 93-345, IAC 93-386 e IAC 90-3395 e a cultivar IAC 17 apresentaram os menores valores de retenção foliar e de danos nas vagens, com produção significativamente superior à da 'IAS 5' no primeiro ano. Na avaliação do germoplasma semiprecoce (120 dias) ('IAC 15', 'IAC 18', 'IAC 100', IAC 93-2277, IAC 93-2738, IAC 93-3335), a cultivar IAC 100 e a linhagem IAC 93-3335 comportaram-se como resistentes a A. gemmatalis, e a cultivar IAC 15, como suscetível a essa lagarta e aos percevejos. 'IAC 18' teve produção estável nos dois anos, aproximadamente 600 g/3 m de linha, comparável às maiores médias, embora apresentasse os maiores índices de retenção foliar. Entre as linhagens, IAC 93-3335 foi menos danificada por lagartas, assim como apresentou menos danos nas vagens e produção similar à da cultivar IAC 18.
