Abstract

The MUon RAdiography of VESuvius (MURAVES) project aims at the study of Mt. Vesuvius, an active and hazardous volcano near Naples, Italy, with the use of muons freely and abundantly produced by cosmic rays. In particular, the MURAVES experiment intends to perform muographic imaging of the internal structure of the summit of Mt. Vesuvius. The challenging measurement of the rock density distribution in its summit by muography, in conjunction with data from other geophysical techniques, can help model possible eruption dynamics. The MURAVES apparatus consists of an array of three independent and identical muon trackers, with a total sensitive area of 3 square meters. In each tracker, a sequence of 4 XY tracking planes made of plastic scintillators is complemented by a 60 cm thick lead wall inserted between the two downstream planes to improve rejection of background from low energy muons. The apparatus is currently acquiring data. This paper presents preliminary results from the analysis of the first data samples acquired with trackers pointing towards Mt. Vesuvius, including the first relative measurement of the density projection of two flanks of the volcano at three different altitudes; we also present the workflow of the simulation chain of the MURAVES experiment and its ongoing developments.

Abstract

The first search for ultra-rare $K^+$ decays into the $\pi^+e^+e^-e^+e^-$ final state is reported, using a dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017-2018. An upper limit of $1.4\times 10^{-8}$ at 90% CL is obtained for the branching ratio of the $K^+\to\pi^+e^+e^-e^+e^-$ decay, predicted in the Standard Model to be $(7.2\pm0.7)\times 10^{-11}$. Upper limits at 90% CL are obtained at the level of $10^{-9}$ for the branching ratios of two prompt decay chains involving pair-production of hidden-sector mediators: $K^+\to\pi^+aa$, $a\to e^+e^-$ and $K^+\to\pi^+S$, $S\to A^\prime A^\prime$, $A^\prime\to e^+e^-$. The QCD axion is excluded as a possible explanation of the "17 MeV anomaly"., Comment: Version to be submitted to Physics Letters B

Abstract

A sample of $1.3 \times 10^5 K^+ \to \pi^0 e^+ \nu \gamma$ candidates with less than 1% background was collected by the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS in 2017-2018. Branching fraction measurements are obtained at percent relative precision in three restricted kinematic regions, improving on existing results by a factor larger than two. An asymmetry, possibly related to T-violation, is investigated with no evidence observed within the achieved precision. Measurement of the ultra-rare $K^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar\nu$ decay at the NA62 experiment at CERN requires high-performance particle identification to distinguish muons from pions. Calorimetric identification currently in use, based on a boosted decision tree algorithm, achieves a muon misidentification probability of $1.2\times 10^{-5}$ for a pion identification efficiency of 75% in the momentum range of 15-40 GeV/$c$. In this work, calorimetric identification performance is improved by developing an algorithm based on a convolutional neural network classifier augmented by a filter. Muon misidentification probability is reduced by a factor of six with respect to the current value for a fixed pion-identification efficiency of 75%. Alternatively, pion identification efficiency is improved from 72% to 91% for a fixed muon misidentification probability of $10^{-5}$., Comment: Updated author list and Ref. 4

Abstract

A search for the $K^+\to\mu^-\nu e^+e^+$ decay, forbidden within the Standard Model by either lepton number or lepton flavour conservation depending on the flavour of the emitted neutrino, has been performed using the dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2016--2018. Abstract

A sample of $2.8 \times 10^4$ $K^{+} \to \pi^{+} \mu^{+} \mu^{-}$ candidates with negligible background was collected by the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS in 2017--2018. The model-independent branching fraction is measured to be $(9.15 \pm 0.08)\times 10^{-8}$, a factor three more precise than previous measurements. The decay form factor is presented as a function of the squared dimuon mass. A measurement of the form factor parameters and their uncertainties is performed using a description based on Chiral Perturbation Theory at $\mathcal{O}(p^6)$., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

Radiographic imaging with muons by absorption, also called Muon Radiography or Muography, is a methodology based on the characteristic of the matter to be crossed by high energy muons. This physical property allows muons to pass through the material with a measurable degree of absorption depending on the density of the material. Muon Radiography applies to several different situations and is particularly suitable for investigating subsoil of civil or archaeological interest. This kind of applications needs the muon detector to be installed below the target region. A novel borehole cylindrical detector has been built and tested for use in harsh conditions and for limited space installations. It is based on the past expertise with scintillator detectors and is composed of two types of scintillating elements, bar-shaped and arcshaped. Due to its size, it can be easily installed in drilled holes of 25 cm in diameter or more, typically economical to make. Here, we describe the idea, commissioning, and some preliminary results.

Abstract

Muons are constantly produced in cosmic-rays and reach the Earth surface with a flux of about 160 particles per second per square meter. The abundance of muons with respect to other cosmic particles and their capability to cross dense materials with low absorption rate allow them to be exploited for large scale geological or human-made object imaging. Muon radiography is based on similar principles as X-ray radiography, measuring the surviving rate of muons escaping the target and relating it to the mass distribution inside the object. In the course of decades, after the first application in 1955, the methodology has been applied in several different fields. Muography allows us to measure the internal density distribution of the investigated object, or to simply highlight the presence of void regions by observing any excess of muons. Most of these applications require the detector to be installed below the rock being probed. In case that possible installation sites are not easily accessible by people, common instrumentation cannot be installed. A novel borehole cylindrical detector for muon radiography has been recently developed to deal with these conditions. It has been realized with a cylindrical geometry to fit typical borehole dimensions. Its design maximizes the geometrical acceptance, minimizing the dead spaces by the use of arc-shaped scintillators. Abstract

Among the meson decays, K→πνν‾ are the cleanest environment, from the theoretical point of view, where to search for new physics effects. The NA62 Experiment at CERN SPS aims to measure the BR(K+→π+νν‾) with a 10% precision by the end of 2018. It has been commissioned with technical runs in 2014 and 2015, and some preliminary results of the detector performances and quality of data are here reported.

Abstract

A search for heavy neutral lepton (N) production in $K^+\rightarrow\pi^+\nu\bar{\nu}$ decays using the data sample collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017–2018 is reported. Upper limits of the extended neutrino mixing matrix element $|U_{e4}|^2$ are established at the level of $10^{−9}$ over most of the accessible heavy neutral lepton mass range 144–462 MeV/$c^2$, with the assumption that the lifetime exceeds 50 ns. These limits improve significantly upon those of previous production and decay searches. The $|U_{e4}|^2$ range favoured by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis is excluded up to a mass of about 340 MeV/$c^2$. The NA62 experiment reports an investigation of the $ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $ mode from a sample of K$^{+}$ decays collected in 2017 at the CERN SPS. The experiment has achieved a single event sensitivity of (0.389 ± 0.024) × 10$^{−10}$, corresponding to 2.2 events assuming the Standard Model branching ratio of (8.4 ± 1.0) × 10$^{−11}$. Two signal candidates are observed with an expected background of 1.5 events. Combined with the result of a similar analysis conducted by NA62 on a smaller data set recorded in 2016, the collaboration now reports an upper limit of 1.78 × 10$^{−10}$ for the $ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $ branching ratio at 90% CL. This, together with the corresponding 68% CL measurement of ($ {0.48}_{-0.48}^{+0.72} $) × 10$^{−10}$, are currently the most precise results worldwide, and are able to constrain some New Physics models that predict large enhancements still allowed by previous measurements. Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN reports a search for the lepton number violating decays K+→π−e+e+ and K+→π−μ+μ+ using a data sample collected in 2017. No signals are observed, and upper limits on the branching fractions of these decays of 2.2×10−10 and 4.2×10−11 are obtained, respectively, at 90% confidence level. These upper limits improve on previously reported measurements by factors of 3 and 2, respectively.

Abstract

A search for heavy neutral lepton production in K + decays using a data sample collected with a minimum\ud bias trigger by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2015 is reported. Upper limits at the 10−7 to 10−6 level\ud are established on the elements of the extended neutrino mixing matrix |Ue4|\ud 2 and |Uμ4|\ud 2 for heavy\ud neutral lepton mass in the ranges 170–448 MeV/c2 and 250–373 MeV/c2, respectively. This improves on\ud the previous limits from HNL production searches over the whole mass range considered for |Ue4|2 and\ud above 300 MeV/c2 for |Uμ4|2.

Abstract

The main physics goal of the NA62 experiment at CERN is to precisely measure the branching ratio of the Kaon rare decay K+→π+νν. This decay is strongly suppressed in the Standard Model. On the other hand its branching ratio is calculated with high accuracy. NA62 is designed to measure the K+→π+νν decay rate with an uncertainty better than 10%. The measurement can serve as a probe to some new physics phenomena, which can alter the decay rate. The NA62 experiment has been successfully launched in October 2014. The theory framework as well as the NA62 detector and the preliminary results are reviewed in this article.

Abstract

Looking for phenomena beyond the Standard Model (SM) in rare decays is a complementary approach to direct searches for New Physics (NP) at colliders. One of the theoretically cleanest processes is the ultra rare decay K+ → π+νν. The goal of the NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is to measure the branching ratio (BR) of this decay with 10% precision. The experiment has been launched in 2014. In 2015, the detector was commissioned at a low intensity beam. The experimental setup is described and performances achieved in 2015 are discussed in view of the final measurement.

Abstract

The KLOE experiment at the ϕ – factory DAΦNE in Frascati near Rome is the first to have employed Initial State Radiation (ISR) to precisely determine the e + e − → π + π − ( γ ) cross section below 1 GeV. Such a measurement is particularly important to test the Standard Model (SM) calculation for the ( g − 2 ) of the muon, where a long standing 3 σ discrepancy is observed. In 2005 and 2008 KLOE published two measurements of the π + π − cross section with the photon emitted at small angles, and an independent measurement of the π + π − cross section with the photon emitted at large angles using data at a collision energy of 1 GeV (i.e., 20 MeV below the ϕ -peak) was published in 2010. While the measurements were normalized to the DAΦNE luminosity using large angle Bhabha scattering, a new analysis has been performed which derives the pion form factor directly from measuring the bin-by-bin π + π − γ / μ + μ − γ ratio. We present the preliminary results of this new measurement, as well as the previously published ones, and the impact on the evaluation of the hadronic contribution to the muon anomaly.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment recorded a large sample of $K^+ \rightarrow \mu^+ \nu_{\mu}$ decays in 2007. A peak search has been performed in the reconstructed missing mass spectrum. In the absence of a signal, limits in the range $2 \times 10^{-6}$ to $10^{-5}$ have been set on the squared mixing matrix element $|U_{\mu4} |^2$ between muon and heavy neutrino states, for heavy neutrino masses in the range 300-375 MeV/$c^2$. The result extends the range of masses for which upper limits have been set on the value of $|U_{\mu4} |^2$ in previous production search experiments., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

The measurement of the ratio of the rates of leptonic kaon decays performed by NA48/2 and NA62 (RKphase) experiments is presented, together with the description of the NA62 experiment that will start collecting data in 2015 at the CERN SPS with the main goal of measuring the branching ratio(BR) of the rare decay K+→ π+νν¯ with a precision of 10%.

Abstract

The rare decays K+ --> p+ nu nubar are excellent processes to make tests of new physics at the highest scale complementary to LHC thanks to their theoretically cleaness. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS aims to collect of the order of 100 events in two years of data taking, keeping the background at the level of 10%. Part of the experimental apparatus has been commissioned during a technical run in 2012. The physics prospects and the status of the experiment will be reviewed after the commissioning run of 2014 and the data taking in 2015.

Abstract

A test of lepton flavour conservation in kaon rare decays by the NA48/2 experiment at CERN SPS is presented. The improved upper limit on the rate of the lepton number violating decay K ± → π ∓ μ ± μ ± is established with the data sample collected in 2003–2004. A precision test of lepton flavour universality in kaon rare decays by the successor NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is reported. The helicity suppressed ratio R K = Γ(K ± → e ± ν )/Γ(K ± → μ ± ν ) is measured with a 0.4% precision using the data sample collected in 2007–2008 and is consistent with the prediction of the Standard Model. The main goal of the NA62 experiment is to measure the branching ratio of the ultra-rare K + → π + ν ν decay with 10% accuracy. This will be achieved by collecting ∼ 1013 K + decays in the fiducial volume. The NA62 estimated sensitivities to rare and forbidden decays of K + and π 0 , including lepton flavour and number violating modes, and the NA62 potential to improve on several experimental limits are discussed.

Abstract

A precision test of lepton flavour universality has been performed by measuring the ratio RKRK of kaon leptonic decay rates K+→e+νK+→e+ν and K+→μ+νK+→μ+ν in a sample of 59 813 reconstructed K+→e+νK+→e+ν candidates with (8.71±0.24)%(8.71±0.24)% background contamination. The result RK=(2.487±0.013)×10−5RK=(2.487±0.013)×10−5 is in agreement with the Standard Model expectation.

Abstract

We have measured the cross section of the radiative process e+e−→π+π−γe+e−→π+π−γ with the KLOE detector at the Frascati ϕ -factory DAΦNE, from events taken at a CM energy W=1 GeVW=1 GeV. Abstract

We present a measurement of the slope parameter α for the decay, with the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE ϕ-factory, based on a background free sample of ∼17 million η mesons produced in ϕ radiative decays. By fitting the event density in the Dalitz plot we determine . The result is in agreement with recent measurements from hadro- and photo-production experiments.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is aimed at measuring the rare decay K + → π + ν ν ¯ . This poses very stringent requirements on the particle identification capabilities of the apparatus in order to reject the overwhelming K + → μ + ν and K + → π + π 0 background. In particular, a π 0 rejection at level of 10 − 8 is needed to complement the kinematical rejection of π + π 0 events. In order to have a full acceptance from 0 to 50 mrad, partly covered by NA48 liquid Kripton calorimeter, a set of veto anti-counters should be placed along the vacuum decay tank, to catch large angle photons with a detection efficiency better than 10 − 4 in a wide energy range: from few hundreds MeV to 35 GeV. Intense R&D programs have been carried out in order to study different technological solutions: a lead-scintillating fibers calorimeter, lead-scintillator sandwich calorimeter and finally an original re-use of the existing barrel of the OPAL lead-glass electromagnetic calorimeter. We present the results on detector performances and compare the three solutions.
