Background: The community management of the drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) was introduced after several years of absolute facility model of care to reduce the logistic and social problems associated with hospital admissions of the MDR-TB patients. This study compares the health-related Quality of life (HRQOL) of patients receiving facility and community-based model of care.Methods: This was a mixed methods design combining a quantitative cross-sectional survey, a focus group discussion and in-depth interviews with DR TB stakeholders. Background: Cervical cancer is the most frequent female genital tract malignancy in Nigeria, with the majority of patients suffering from advanced stages of the disease. A low level of awareness and knowledge of cervical cancer and screening has been identified as one of the causes of cervical screening underutilization in Nigeria. This study aims to determine the level of cervical cancer screening awareness and uptake among rural Nigerian women.Method: The study design was cross sectional, carried out among adult women in the Orhuwhorun community in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to recruit 234 women from May to June 2021. Data were collected by semi-structured, interviewer- administered questionnaire. Data analysis was done with SPSS v. 25.0.Result: Two hundred and thirty-four women of mean age 41.08 years (SD ± 8.45) were enrolled. The level of awareness of cervical cancer screening methods was 9.4% while screening uptake was only 4.3% among rural women in Orhuwhorun.Conclusion: The awareness of cervical cancer screening methods and uptake was very low among rural women in Delta State. It is, therefore, imperative that cervical cancer awareness campaigns among this populace are increased and screening services be less expensive and accessible.

Trypanosomiasis afflicts about 6 ~ 7 million people globally and to a large extent impedes livestock production in Africa. Naturally, trypanosomal parasites undergo genetic mutation and have developed resistance over a wide range of therapies. The utilization of animals and plants products has presented therapeutic potential for identifying novel anti-trypanosomal drugs. This study evaluated toad venom for anti-trypanosomal potency invivo in Swiss mice. Toads were collected from July to August 2019. The acute oral toxicity and biochemical characterization of the toad venom were determined. The experimental mice were administered various doses (130 mg/kg, 173 mg/kg and 217 mg/kg) of the toad venom crude extract and 0.75 mg/mL of Diamizan Plus standard drug for the treatment of trypanosomiasis, once daily for 3 days. The in-vivo anti-trypanosomal activity was evaluated by a curative test, after infecting the mice with Trypanosoma brucei brucei. The pre-patent period was 72 hours before treatment commenced. The overall results showed that trypanosomal load was highest in the control group while the group treated with Diamizan drug had the least trypanosomal load. As such, the mean trypanosomal load in relation to treatments showed a very high significant difference (P0.05) across treatment groups. The over 50% reduction in the trypanosomal load in the 130 mg/kg group in comparison with the control group brings to bare the anti-trypanosomal potency of the toad venom. The anti-trypanosomal activity demonstrated by the toad venom has provided basis for development of new therapeutic agents from different toad species. The study recommends further studies (both in-vivo and invitro) followed by the characterization of the active compounds present in the toad venom responsible for the anti-tyrpanosomal activity observed alongside the management and conservation of these species.

Background: Cervical cancer is the second highest cause of cancer deaths among African women. In Nigeria, one woman dies of cervical cancer daily (Ci & Makata, 2016). The most important risk factor for cervical cancer is infection by the human papillomavirus (HPV) (Kashyap, Krishnan, Kaur, & Ghai, 2019). The disease can be prevented due to its long preclinical phase that can be detected by screening. The World Health Organization recommends high-risk HPV DNA testing as the primary cervical screening approach in places where Pap testing has not been established. This study aimed to determine the level of awareness and acceptability of self-sampling for human papillomavirus testing in rural areas of Delta State. Methods: The study is a cross sectional study design. Study population was women between the ages of 30 and 65years who are residents in the selected communities. The sample size was 230. The sampling method employed was a multi-stage sampling technique. The study instrument was a semi-structured interviewer-administered questionnaire. Self-collection kits were given to participants who gave informed consent to provide vaginal samples for HPV testing. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0. Descriptive data were presented in frequency distribution tables. The number of women who provided vaginal samples, who prefer to use self-sampling in the future and are willing to recommend it to a friend was analyzed to determine the level of acceptability of self-sampling. Results: The mean age ± SD of respondents was 41.1 ± 8. 4years. Results from this study showed that 43(18.7%), 34(14.8%), and 2(0.9%) of the 230 respondents were aware of cervical cancer, human papillomavirus, and self-sampling for HPV respectively. 17(7.4%) respondents were aware of cervical cancer screening methods but only 6(2.6%) had ever been screened for cervical cancer. The acceptability of self-sampling was 92.6%. Discussion: Cervical screening is crucial in the early detection and prevention of cervical cancer. A low level of awareness and knowledge of human papillomavirus (HPV), cervical cancer, and screening has been implicated as one of the factors of the underutilization of cervical screening in Nigeria. Therefore, efforts to increase awareness, knowledge, and understanding of the perceptions of women about cervical cancer and screening through the provision of an educational intervention will be an important step in promoting the health of women. Conclusion: With the World Health Organization's call to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem by 2120, and the draft elimination strategy target of 70% of the world's women being screened with a high-performance HPV test between 35 and 45 years of age by 2030 (Gultekin, Ramirez, Broutet, & Hutubessy, 2020), self-sampling is likely the only feasible way to scale up and realize this target. The study aimed to describe growth parameters and to quantify the association between linear body measurements as predictors of liveweight (LW) of Holstein-Friesian (HF), and HF crossbred dairy calves in Queensland. A secondary objective was to quantify the effect of disease events on LW change.Longitudinal study.Fortnightly LW, hip height (HH), hip width (HW) and heart girth (HG) measurements were recorded from 16 male and 28 female HF calves from birth until weaning. The association between linear body measurement and the effect of a disease event on LW change were explored using linear mixed-effects modelling with random intercepts and random slopes.HG was the best body measure used individually as a predictor of calf LW (R2 = 82%; P0.001), while the combined use of HG, HW and HH was the most accurate predictor of calf LW between birth and weaning (R2 = 90%; P0.001). HW, average feed intake and total feed intake were significantly affected by disease events (P0.05). On average, total average LW loss associated with a single pneumonia event was estimated at 14.6 kg (95% CI = 10.5 to 18.7 kg; P 0.05).Calves of this study performed at a level consistent with the previously published reports. Growth performance was significantly compromised by pneumonia. HW was found to be the least predictive individual measure, and the combined use of HH, HW and HG had the most accurate prediction of calf liveweight from birth to weaning.

Background: The World Health Organization Global Tuberculosis report 2020 showed that an estimated 10 million people from different parts of the world are infected with Tuberculosis. The cause-specic death rate from this chronic infection was estimated at 1.3 million globally in 2020. Previously MDR-TB patients were managed exclusively at the TB referral hospitals but the new WHO Model for MDR-TB care currently includes either community or facility-based management during the intensive phase country. (Oladimeji O, 2014) The intensive phase is 4 months but can be up to 6 months if no sputum conversion at 4 month. The continuation phase is done in the Community for 5 months to complete 9 months regimen for the short course therapy (WHO 2011). After this a patient is switched to the individualized regimen if the resistance persists. (Leimane V R, 2005) The Community model management of MDR-TB patients involves two crucial strategies: decentralization of hospital-based care from a distant TB referral centre to a local or community-based hospital closest to the patient's residence and early discharge of the patients from such facility for easy incorporation into community life. (Williams, 2016) . MDR Treatment outcomes according to the World Health Organization and International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IUATLD) guidelines (WHO, 2011) include patients who are cured proven with at least 2 negative culture results for the nal 9 months of treatment for TB. A patient who "Completed Treatment" was dened as a one who had completed treatment according to program protocol but did not meet the denition for cured, because of lack bacteriological results. The category "Died" comprises of any patient with MDR-TB who died for any reason during the course of TB treatment. Treatment Failure occurred when the patient remains sputum smear and/or culture- positive at six months. This will require a switch to an individualized regimen. The "Defaulted" category comprised any patient whose TB treatment was interrupted for 2 or more consecutive months for any reason. The Transferred Out category comprised any patient who had been transferred to another facility for management and for whom the treatment outcome was unknown. For analysis purposes, Cured and Completed Treatment outcomes were combined as "Treatment Success", whereas others were combined as "Poor Treatment Outcome".Presumptive MDR-TB include smear positive previously treated patients who are currently categorized based on clinical conditions as either relapsed, return after default, or treatment failure. (Girum, 2018)The objectives of this study are to determine and compare the treatment outcome for the MDR TB patients using community or facility model of management and also determine and compare the factors affecting the treatment outcome for the MDR patient using either the community or facility model. Method Study design: This was a cross sectional descriptive study carried out through a retrospective review of the MDR TB treatment records obtained from the Kaduna State Ministry of Health. Study population: These were all MDR TB patients in KD state within the 5 years period of the survey while the Inclusion criteria consist of the MDR TB patients with available record of treatment at the Kaduna state Ministry of Health. Patients with incomplete data were excluded from the study The Sample size: Available records as at the time of this survey contained 103 MDR TB from the community or treatment centre between May, 2016 and December 2020 Sampling technique: Total sampling of all eligible patients. Paticipants were from 12 out of the 23 LGAs in Kaduna State Data Analysis: Descriptive statistics done with frequency tables and measures of central tendency using mean+ SD. Previous studies have shown that MDR TB affects mainly this highly mobile group with grave economic consequences on their family, community and the nation Our studies show no signicance difference in the treatment outcome either at the facility or at the community. This means that the community model with less cost, more opportunity to interact with family members will be preferable option for the patients. (Williams, 2016) Though the cure rate in this study was higher than the WHO bench mark for MDR TB, the mortality was very high similar to previous ndings of high mortality among MDR TB patients It is worth noting that those on individualized regimen & HIV comorbidity were signicantly managed more at the facility than the community in line with the WHO mgt protocols (Leimane, 2005)Considering the high mortality reported in this study, MDR TB stakeholders need to review of both models, identify the gaps in management and urgently nd a solution Conclusion: This study has compared the facility and community management of MDR TB and has found that the treatment outcome at both levels of care were similar. However, the MDR TB mortality was very high. The aims of this study were to undertake a systematic review and meta-analysis of the types of probiotic formulations that are commercially available and to critically appraise the available evidence for the effectiveness of probiotics in improving the health and productivity of calves. Relevant papers were identified to answer the question: ‘In calves aged between birth to one year, is the use of probiotics associated with changes in haematological or biochemical parameters, faecal bacteria counts, average daily live weight gain, dry matter intake, or feed conversion ratio?’ The search of the literature yielded 67 studies that fit the primary screening criteria. Included studies were assessed for bias and confounding using a predefined risk assessment tool adapted from the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias in randomised trials and GRADE guidelines. Meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager and R. Random sequence generation was low in more than 59 % of studies. Risk of allocation concealment and performance bias were largely unclear in over 68 % of studies. Calves fed probiotics had increased average daily live weight gains (ADG) from birth to weaning (mean difference [MD] = 83.14 g/d 95 % CI = 58.36–107.91, P < 0.001) compared with calves on a control diet. Calf age reduced the level of heterogeneity of the effect of probiotics on ADG for calves between one to three weeks of age (τ = 73.15; I = 4%; P = 0.40) but not for calves older than three weeks of age (τ = 2892.91; I = 73 %; P < 0.001). Feed conversion ratio (FCR) was lower for calves on probiotics (MD = −0.13 kg of dry matter intake (DMI) to kg of live weight (LW) gain, 95 % CI = −0.17 to −0.09, P < 0.001), and the heterogeneity of effect was large in younger aged calves (τ = 0.05; I = 78 %; P = 0.03). The risk of bias regarding the methodology in the included studies was high. The quality of evidence for each outcome was categorised as moderate. There is sufficient data to support the effectiveness of probiotic use in some applications such as for the improvement of performance and productivity parameters of calves. However, the evidence is weak for other potential probiotic uses in calves such as improved health and reduced risk of disease. Therefore, the existing data are inconclusive and do not support the use of probiotics as an alternative to antimicrobials to improve calf health and productivity.

The current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is largely driven by community transmission, after 2019 novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV or SARS-CoV-2) crosses the borders. To stop the spread, rapid testing is required at community clinics and hospitals. These rapid tests should be comparable with the standard PCR technology. Isothermal amplification technology provides an excellent alternative that is highly amenable to resource limited settings, where expertise and infrastructure to support PCR are not available. In this review, we provide a brief description of isothermal amplification technology, its potential and the gaps that need to be considered for SARS-CoV-2 detection. Among this emerging technology, loop-mediated amplification (LAMP), recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) and Nicking enzyme-assisted reaction (NEAR) technologies have been identified as potential platforms that could be implemented at community level, without samples referral to a centralized laboratory and prolonged turnaround time associated with the standard COVID-19 RT-PCR test. LAMP, for example, has recently been shown to be comparable with PCR and could be performed in less than 30 min by non-laboratory staff, without RNA extractions commonly associated with PCR. Interestingly, NEAR (ID NOW™ COVID-19 (Abbott, IL, USA) was able to detect the virus in 5 min. More so, isothermal platforms are cost effective and could easily be scaled up to resource limited settings. Diagnostics developers, scientific community and commercial companies could consider this alternative method to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research. Background The 2014/2015 Ebolavirus outbreak resulted in more than 28,000 cases and 11,323 reported deaths, as of March 2016. Domestic transmission of the Guinea strain associated with the outbreak occurred mainly in six African countries, and international transmission was reported in four countries. Outbreak management was limited by the inability to rapidly diagnose infected cases. A further fifteen countries in Africa are predicted to be at risk of Ebolavirus outbreaks in the future as a consequence of climate change and urbanization. Early detection of cases and reduction of transmission rates is critical to prevent and manage future severe outbreaks. We designed a rapid assay for detection of Ebolavirus using recombinase polymerase amplification, a rapid isothermal amplification technology that can be combined with portable lateral flow detection technology. The developed rapid assay operates in 30 min and was comparable with real-time TaqMan™ PCR. Methods Designed, screened, selected and optimized oligonucleotides using the NP coding region from Ebola Zaire virus (Guinea strain). We determined the analytical sensitivity of our Ebola rapid molecular test by testing selected primers and probe with tenfold serial dilutions (1.34 × 1010− 1.34 × 101 copies/μL) of cloned NP gene from Mayinga strain of Zaire ebolavirus in pCAGGS vector, and serially diluted cultured Ebolavirus as established by real-time TaqMan™ PCR that was performed using ABI7500 in Fast Mode. We tested extracted and reverse transcribed RNA from cultured Zaire ebolavirus strains – Mayinga, Gueckedou C05, Gueckedou C07, Makona, Kissidougou and Kiwit. We determined the analytical specificity of our assay with related viruses: Marburg, Ebola Reston and Ebola Sudan. We further tested for Dengue virus 1–4, Plasmodium falciparum and West Nile Virus (Kunjin strain). Results The assay had a detection limit of 134 copies per μL of plasmid containing the NP gene of Ebolavirus Mayinga, and cultured Ebolavirus and was highly specific for the Zaire ebolavirus species, including the Guinea strain responsible for the 2014/2015 outbreak. The assay did not detect related viruses like Marburg, Reston, or Sudan viruses, and other pathogens likely to be isolated from clinical samples. Conclusions Our assay could be suitable for implementation in district and primary health laboratories, as only a heating block and centrifuge is required for operation. The technique could provide a pathway for rapid screening of patients and animals for improved management of outbreaks.

Isothermal molecular diagnostics are bridging the technology gap between traditional diagnostics and polymerase chain reaction-based methods. These new techniques enable timely and accurate testing, especially in settings where there is a lack of infrastructure to support polymerase chain reaction facilities. Despite this, there is a significant lack of uptake of these technologies in developing countries where they are highly needed. Among these novel isothermal technologies, recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) holds particular potential for use in developing countries. This rapid nucleic acid amplification approach is fast, highly sensitive and specific, and amenable to countries with a high burden of infectious diseases. Implementation of RPA technology in developing countries is critically required to assess limitations and potentials of the diagnosis of infectious disease, and may help identify impediments that prevent adoption of new molecular technologies in low resource- and low skill settings. This review focuses on approaching diagnosis of infectious disease with RPA.

Microscopy of direct smears for acid-fast bacilli (AFB) remains the common method for the laboratory diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis in most laboratories in our setting. The bleach microscopy method has been introduced and evaluated in different settings as an alternative to direct smear microscopy. However, this approach is yet to be evaluated in a typical government owned/public health laboratory in our setting thus the need for this study. This study was conducted in two Family Health International (FHI) supported health facilities in North West Nigeria. A total of 1075 sputum specimens were collected for the study, comprising of new and follow up cases, regardless of age group and sex. The sputa were examined by two methods, direct smear microscopy and household bleach and centrifugation method. Out of the 1075 sputum specimens, 171 specimens (40.3%) were positive for AFB by direct microscopy and 253 (59.7%) were positive for AFB by the household bleach method. There was a significant increase in the number of AFB positive specimens by the household bleach method (p < 0.05). The bleach method significantly increase tuberculosis (TB) case detection compared to direct smear microscopy. The National TB and Leprosy Control Program could consider supporting the use of this method.

Background: Inadequate diagnostic processes and human resources in laboratories contribute to a high burden of tuberculosis (TB) in low- and middle-income countries. Direct smear microscopy is relied on for TB diagnosis; however, sensitivity rates vary. To improve sensitivity of direct microscopy, the researchers employed several approaches, including sputum digestion and concentration of acid-fast bacilli (AFB), a technique which uses commercial bleach. Objectives: This study compared methods used to diagnose active Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections. Methods: Three sputum specimens were collected from each of 340 participants in Abuja, Nigeria, over two consecutive days. Direct microscopy was performed on all specimens; following microscopy, one specimen from each patient was selected randomly for bleach sedimentation and one for Lowenstein-Jensen culture. Results: Direct microscopy produced 28.8% AFB-positive results, whilst bleach sedimentation resulted in 30.3%. When compared with the cultures, 26.5% were AFB true positive using direct microscopy and 27.1% using bleach sedimentation. Whilst the specificity rate between these two methods was not statistically significant ( P = 0.548), the sensitivity rate was significant ( P = 0.004). Conclusion: Based on these results, bleach increases the sensitivity of microscopy compared with direct smear and has similar specificity. When diagnosing new cases of pulmonary TB, one bleach-digested smear is as sensitive as three direct smears, reducing waiting times for patients and ensuring the safety of laboratory technicians.

Purpose: To characterize the aerial parts of Andrographis paniculata, a bitter Indian herb grown in Nigeria, for the purpose of quality control.Methods: The determination of bitterness value and of various physicochemical characteristics; tests for key phytochemicals; and thin layer chromatography (TLC) of the air-dried herb, were carried out as prescribed in standard texts. Results: The mean bitterness value of the herb for both men and women was 2.86 ± 1.74 x 103 unitsper g. The male value (2.07 ± 1.42 x 103) appeared to be lower than the female’s (3.52 ± 1.82 x 103) but the difference was not statistically significant. The results (% w/w) of loss on drying (10.64 ± 0.36), totalash (14.10 ± 4.49), water extractive value (30.37 ± 2.63) and acid insoluble ash (1.00 ± 0.06) were similar to those reported for the Asian plant. The phytochemical tests revealed the presence of glycosides, saponins, tannins and alkaloids, but not of anthraquinones. Normal phase TLC of the drug yielded 5 spots as against 6 spots yielded by reverse TLC. Conclusion: The results provide useful quantitative and descriptive data that are essential for identifying and characterizing the Nigerian grown herb for the purpose of quality control; and confirm keysimilarities between the Nigerian and the Asian plant.Keywords: Andrographis paniculata, Quality control, Bitterness value, Physicochemical, Phytochemical, Chromatography.

Objective: To determine the influence of patients\' perception of obstetric practice in Calabar on the low utilization of health facilities for delivery. Methods: The University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, the general hospital and eight private clinics in Calabar were visited daily for a period of one month to interview postnatal mothers. This was to ascertain the mothers\' perception of obstetric care in these facilities and their attitude towards some selected birth practices. Results: All the interviewed mothers had some formal education, and 133 (92.4%) were aged 20 years and above. One hundred and forty (97.2%) of the mothers were satisfied with at least one aspect of care received. Areas of satisfaction mentioned by the mothers include attitude of health staff 114 (81.4%), clinical care received 85 (60.7%), sanitation of the facility 61 (43.6%), and basic amenities 47 (33.6%), poor sanitary condition of the health facility and lack of basic amenities were the major causes of dissatisfaction. Few mothers, 31 (22%) disagreed with dorsal position during second stage of labor. Most mothers, 92 (63.9%) would want pain relief in labor; 19 (13.2%) did not appreciate shaving of pubic hair and 50 (34.7%) felt episiotomy was not necessary for safe delivery. Conclusion: To improve the utilization of obstetric services in Calabar, basic amenities such as water and sanitation should be provided; and there should be restriction of routine birth practices that have no evidence of effectiveness. Physical performance efficiency and effectiveness in different sports depends to a large on the size, weight and proportion of the physique of the athlete. Several kinanthropometric studies have shown significant associations between anthropometric characteristics of judo, karate and taekwondo combat athletic groups. To achieve the purpose of the study anthropometric characteristics of 80 judo (45 males and 35 females), 90 karate (40 males and 50 females) and 60 taekwondo (35 males and 25 females) who have been training for atleast 3 years have been measured. The anthropometric measures include body mass, standing height, abdominal circumference, waist circumference and hip circumference. These measurements were made by following the standards of anthropometric protocols of the international working group of kinanthropometrics. Differences between the male and female subjects of each group were determined. The results revealed greater waist circumference (92.80 0.75 cm), waist hip ratio (0.70 0.01 cm) and conicity index (174.93 1.27) of male judo groups compared to those of male karate and taekwondo groups. However male karate groups have higher mean value for triceps (7.29 0.22 mm), biceps (7.73 0.21 mm) compared with those of judo and taekwondo groups, whereas male taekwondo groups have significantly higher mean value for height (172.91 1.12 cm) and hip circumference (136.40 1.21 cm) compared to male judo and karate groups. Among the female combat athlete groups, karate groups have significantly higher value for triceps (15.10 0.29 mm) and biceps (13.30 0.36 mm) compared to the female judo and taekwondo groups. However female taekwondo group was heavier (66.08 1.30 kg) and have higher conicity index (159.69 2.01) than the female judo and karate groups. The difference between the selected female combat athletic groups in height, body mass index, abdominal circumference, waist circumference, hip circumference and waist hip ratio were insignificant.

Background: Between November 2003 and February 2005, Medical Research Council Laboratories conducted a study to access the causative organisms of bacteraemia among admitted patients. The study confirmed Streptococcus pneumoniae as the leading cause of bacteraemia and it led to the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines into the EPI. It is important to continuously monitor the introduction of vaccine with a surveillance system in order to identify changes in the incidence of invasive bacterial infections. So, we monitored patients admitted for febrile illness. Methods & Materials: Between January 2010 and June 2013, a total of 2,938 blood culture vials were received for the purpose of identification of invasive bacterial infections in Clinical Research Laboratories of MRC. 95.1% (2,793) of these blood cultures represents patients that were admitted. These patients were categorized into three age groups: ≤ 5, 6-14 and ≥ 15 years old. Bacterial isolates were isolated using an automated blood culture system BACTEC 9050 (Becton Dickinson, Temse, Belgium) along with commercially produced BD BACTECTM PEDS PLUSTM /F culture, BD BACTECTM Plus Aerobic/F and Plus Anaerobic/F vials. Standard microbiological procedures and further identification by biochemical and serological methods. All procedures were performed in a laboratory that is in compliance with GCLP standards. Results: Out of the admitted patients studied,1,557 (53.7%) were males. The age range was 24 hours to 107 years old. A total of 732 (24.7%) isolates were isolated but 230 (31.3%) represents pathogenic agents. The three common pathogens were Staphylococcus aureus (60 representing 26.1%), Streptococcus pneumoniae (41 representing 17.8%) and Escherichia coli (25 representing 10.9%). S. aureus was identified as the leading cause of admission among the age groups of ≤ 5 and 6-14 years old, followed by S. pneumoniae. E.coli was largely responsible for the admission of ≥ 15 years old patients. Conclusion: These findings are in contrast with previous data in which S. pneumoniae was identified as the leading cause of invasive disease. This report is suggestive of a change in the pattern of etiology of bacteraemia and a new approach may be required in the prevention of staphylococcal infection.
