Abstract

On the basis of the performed tests of the thermophysical properties of epoxy composites filled with nanoparticles, using modern research methods, the permissible temperature ranges have been set, at which it is possible to use the developed materials. The thermal coefficient of linear expansion (α) and heat resistance (Т) of epoxy composites have been investigated. The absolute values of the thermal coefficient of linear expansion of materials, which can be used in different temperature ranges, have been defined. It has been proved that for the formation of composite materials with enhanced thermophysical properties, it is advisable to use a nano filler in the amount of q = 0.5 %. This material is characterized by the highest activation energy, resistance to structural change at the highest temperatures and intense interaction of functional groups of the filler and epoxy oligomer during the formation at the molecular level among all investigated materials.

Abstract

The amount of wind power and other time-variable non-dispatchable renewable energy sources (VRES) such as photovoltaics (PV) is rapidly increasing in the world. Several power systems in Europe are already facing a very high penetration from variable renewables which is posing concerns on the operational stability limits that are being surpassed for extreme RES generation conditions. Most transmission system operators are defining VRES limits of penetration, thus, requiring the renewable energy excess to be curtailed, exported or stored. Energy storage may play a relevant role in maximizing the long term penetration of VRES if used as a technical mean to regulate the daily, weekly and annual profiles of variable generation (VG). This paper reviews the storage technologies that are available and may be used on a power system scale and performs a cost/benefit analysis discussing their advantages and disadvantages for the integration of fast-growing renewables, such as wind power and PV.

28. A Comparative Analysis of Congestion Management Schemes under a Unified Framework

Abstract

The restructuring of the electricity industry has spawned the introduction of new independent grid operators or IGOs, typically called transmission system operators (TSO), independent system operator (ISO) or regional transmission organizations (RTO), in various parts of the world. An important task of an IGO is congestion management (CM) and pricing. This activity has significant economic implications on every market participant in the IGO’s region. The paper briefly reviews the congestion management schemes and the associated pricing mechanism used by the IGO’s in five representative schemes. These were selected to Illustrate the various CM approaches in use: England and Wales, Norway, Sweden, PJM and Califomia. We develop a unified framework for the mathematical representation of the market dispatch and redispatch problems that the IGO must solve in CM in these various jurisdictions. We use this unified framework to develop meaningful metrics to compare the various CM approaches so as to assess their efficiency and the effectiveness of the market signals provided to the market participants. Abstract

Long-term planning of a power system requires that the electricity market can be simulated. One important aspect that should be simulated is that the owners of hydro power plants with reservoirs (generally referred to as dispatchable hydro power) are forced to base their scheduling on uncertain forecasts on precipitation and load. It is inevitable that this lack of perfect information has an impact on the operation costs and reliability of the system. Hence, a simulation of an electricity market should include this property of dispatchable hydro, power. Abstract

We report an additional case of pediatric multisystem Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) with primary cutaneous lesions. A boy was born to a mother who had cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection during her pregnancy. During the first 1-3 months the patient had an acute CMV infection with involvement of skin, intestine, and liver. In the subsequent months the child had other cutaneous lesions diagnosed as molluscum contagiosum and chickenpox at the age respectively of 5 and 18 months; these lesions regressed in 6-8 weeks. When aged 25 months, the child had multiple exudative cutaneous lesions, hemorrhagic nail changes, gingival and lung lesions. These findings and the result of a cutaneous scalp biopsy led to the final diagnosis of multisystem Langerhans cell histiocytosis.

Abstract

Environmental and political factors determine long-term development for renewable generation around the world. The rapid growth of renewable generation requires timely changes in power systems operation planning, investments in additional flexible assets and transmission capacity. The development trends of restructured power systems suggest that the current tools and methodologies used for investment planning are lacking the coordination between transmission and flexibility sources. Moreover, a comprehensive analysis is required for efficient investment decisions in new flexibility sources or transmission assets. However, literature does not provide an efficient modeling tool that will allow such a comprehensive analysis. This dissertation proposes mathematical modeling tools as well as solution methodologies to support efficient and coordinated investment planning in power systems with renewable generation. The mathematical formulations can be characterised as large scale, stochastic, disjunctive, nonlinear optimization problems. Corresponding solution methodologies are based on combination of linearization and reformulation techniques as well as tailored decomposition algorithms. Proposed mathematical tools and solution methodologies are then used to provide an analysis of transmission investment planning, energy storage investments planning as well as coordinated investment planning. The analysis shows that to achieve socially optimal outcome transmission investments should be regulated. Also, the results of the simulations show that coordinated investment planning of transmission, energy storage and renewable generation will result in much higher investments in renewable generation as well as more efficient operation of renewable generation plants. Consequently, coordinated investment planning with regulated transmission investments results in the highest social welfare outcome. QC 20200817
