This article critically interprets the multi-dimensional Asian American identity of Indians in terms of their pan-ethnic identity formation as Asian Americans through cultural assimilation or merging with the host culture of Americans and retention or holding on to Asian identity. The identification of Indian Asian Americans will be determined by pan-ethnicity, gender and religion by the interview responses of Indian Americans, including the pan-ethnic identity of Indians in the Mar Thoma Church community, the second-generation Patel family's union formation in terms of gender identity. Identity formation theories like acculturation and culture shock theories will be used to justify the claims made in the hypothesis. The analysis will be organized in terms of its beginning with the analysis of important factors of pan-ethnicity and then of gender and religion consecutively as part of thematic analysis and finally by statistical analysis. Results show the reasons include better professional advantages, which propel their choice of different identities and their future directives as part of the hypothesis of Asian American identity of Indians as they merge with the American identity as part of cultural assimilation, in other cases, retain their Asian identity beyond Americanized identity and sometimes go beyond both American, Asian identity to restate their Indian ethnicity. When Edith Eaton (Sui Sin Far) published her only book Mrs. Spring Fragrance in 1912, it received about twenty reviews in the American and Canadian press. Many of the reviews suggested that the nature of the book was light and fresh, albeit the larger part of her works dealt with unsuccessful cases of Americanisation and their grave consequences. In this article, I will focus on the use of humour in what are perceived as Eaton's light pieces. I argue that by making grave matters light, Eaton was able to secure publication while safeguarding her messages. More importantly, Eaton developed a special sense of humour, which I term a benevolent amusement, in her works. Reflecting on the 100th anniversary of the 1924 Immigration Act, this brief essay suggests that the idea of "US American Empire" forms the telos of the last one hundred years of US immigration policy. Whether in the twentieth or the twenty-first centuries, or under Republican or Democratic leadership, US lawmakers have sought to restrict immigration to those who were deemed most "assimilable." This article summarizes two studies by Leffa (1999) and Rodrigues (2016) on the laws modifying the Brazilian national curricular policies on foreign language teaching and learning, as well as information drawn by the authors of the present paper from the National Curricular Common Core. Comparatively, it aims to research the laws practiced in São Paulo and other countries, constituted by a linguistic and cultural diversity inherent or as a consequence of intense migratory flows. To analyze the results of this research, some theoretical tools proposed by Hall (1997), Castro-Gómez (2007), Monte Mor (2013), and Spolsky (2016) are used. The results show that the Brazilian policies for foreign language teaching, despite having already valued plurilingualism at some points, in other, especially the current one, have submitted its students to a monolingualist and monoculturalist point of view, resulting from the globalizing process of Americanization of the world. This paper probes into the issue of censorship in Egyptian cinema compared to Hollywood during the second half of the twentieth century. It discusses Egyptian censorship regulations and governmental interference in the film industry and their impact on film reception. Conducted over six months, this research specifically investigates three Egyptian film adaptations of Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), which are Inhiraf (Aberration) (1985), Alfarisa (Prey) (1986) and Al-Raghba (Desire) (2002). These adaptations are scrutinized through the lens of the Egyptian censorship code and the way these film adaptations may have promoted an Americanization of Arab culture is examined. Leading business schools all over the world increasingly tend to conform to the American-style business school model. During recent years, a global discourse about the emergence of the corporate university has also arisen. The term has been used to refer to universities that have uncritically adopted management concepts and practices from corporations. However, little is known about how elite business schools from different parts of the world are strategically developed towards increased Americanisation and corporatisation, and what are the consequences. Therefore, this paper offers a leadership history of the Helsinki School of Economics/Aalto University School of Business, the leading elite business school in Finland, over the research period of 1974–2022. During the research period, the idea of an American-style top-tier business school gradually gained more and more ground among faculty. How did the rise of cinema affect authorship in Britain? This essay examines the question in relation to both new and established writers. Referring to manuals of authorship and fiction writing as well as to the archives of the Society of Authors, it places the rise of cinema after 1906 in the context of the wider "Americanization" of the British culture industry and illustrates the ways in which cinema drove changes to readerly expectation, advertising, and the marketing of literature. It also examines how the business of writing for the cinema came to be incorporated into the broadly professionalized concept of "authorship." In addition to drawing from the experiences of fiction writers including W. Somerset Maugham, E. Phillips Oppenheim, Elinor Glyn, Arnold Bennet, and Edgar Jepson, it also considers cinema authors, Herbert Langford Reed and Eliot Stannard, who sought to integrate screenwriting with the other disciplines traditionally described by the term authorship, widening our sense of what that category might mean. In the early twentieth century, the US federal government created homesteading programs to "Americanize" Hawai'i by encouraging the mass settlement of white families "of good character" to Hawai'i, but to little avail. This essay analyzes a 1912 hearing about the failure of white homesteading in the Territory of Hawai'i, focusing on discourses of race and land use by settler and 'Ōiwi testifiers. Federal leaders and Territory proponents of homesteading mapped the familiar racial formations of vanishing Natives, alien Asians, and white pioneers onto Kānaka 'Ōiwi, Asian plantation workers, and white American homesteaders to further their cause. 'Ōiwi political leaders Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana'ole and Charles Kahiliaulani Notley intervened; although they approached the question of "Americanization" differently from one another, both manipulated and rejected elements of that racial framework according to a shared goal: to get their people back on the land. In recent years, much has been written about the so-called 'Americanisation' of management education in Europe in the post-1945 era. One area that has relatively little attention in this literature, however, is the impact that material and spatial factors had on efforts to import US models of management education overseas. This study begins to redress this issue by focussing in-depth on the challenges involved in the design, planning, and construction of the physical spaces of the London Business School—one of the most prominent advocates of the US model of management education in this period. In the process, it contributes to the literature on Americanisation, as well as our understanding of the history of business schools, by illustrating how the historical trajectories of such institutions can be influenced and shaped by external actors, material constraints, and other contingent factors related to the planning and building of a business school. As one of the most popular sources of information in the world, Wikipedia is edited by a large, global community of contributors. User-generated nature of this online encyclopedia ensures that the information reflects a wide range of topics. Hovewer, Wikipedia articles are created and edited independently in each language version. Therefore, some topics may be presented with varying degrees of completeness depending on their importance in a particular language community. In this paper, we quantified the concept of Americanization on a global scale through comparative analysis of the coverage of American topics in different language versions of Wikipedia. For this purpose, we analyzed over 90 million Wikidata items and 40 million Wikipedia articles in 58 languages. We discussed whether Americanization is more or less dominant in different languages, regions, and cultures. We showed that the interest in American topics is not universal. Western, developed countries are more Americanized (more interested in topics related to America) than the rest of the world. This is the first global, quantitative confirmation of issues often hypothesized, or assumed, in the literature on Americanization and related phenomena. This study shows that Wikipedia and Wikidata can allow quantification of social science concepts that previously were considered not realistically measurable. AbstractThis research aims to overview the English-medium instruction (EMI) situation in Korean Higher education (HE), briefly describing and studying HE policies and examining their impact on Korean teachers and students. The case of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has been addressed and investigated intensively in the Korean context concerning STEM. It is significant to examine the 21st-century controversial issues regarding English Medium Instruction (EMI) implementation in Korean HE, focusing on a case study of the ‘KAIST’. Notably, the issue of EMI has been questioned across Korean society and educational fields. This research focuses on reviewing relevant literature and analysing it in detail to learn how KAIST helps us understand Koreans’ EMI pedagogy methods and education-related (Korea’s EMI policy implementation in general and EMI’s impact on students and teachers) issues. However, the secondary materials are based on press reports, public statements of the people concerned, and statistical data. It lays the groundwork for a step deeper future qualitative or quantitative approaches to the case of KAIST for the improvement and success of EMI in Korean HE. It has been found that modern EMI pedagogy methods can lower excessive pressure so that students and teachers can educate and enjoy the EMI education policy.

This article examines the Americanization of Israeli conservative civil society organizations (CSOs), by exploring how the transnational transfer of Jewish American philanthropy and the diffusion of conservative ideas influence the formation of right-wing Israeli CSOs, applying the theoretical framework of critical community. "Critical Community" is a concept describing the transference of ideas, ideologies, and cultural cues between protest groups in different countries. We explain the transnational diffusion of American conservative ideology using three case studies of Israeli CSOs that exhibit organizational trajectories affected by an American conservative model: The Tikvah Fund, Shalem Center, and the Kohelet Policy Forum. We trace the financial, ideational, and personal links between these CSOs and their American counterparts, shedding light on the significance of transnational relations between ideological groups across borders. Such a critical community enables philanthropic support for these organizations and the emergence of a conservative movement shaped by the flow of ideas from the United States to Israel. Discussions of gastronationalism have largely focused on nationalist politics at the state level, especially in the realm of European integration and Americanisation. This paper, therefore, explores how gastronationalism is manifested at the subnational level by asking the question ‘What role does food play in the construction of Cornish national identity vis-à-vis England?’ This paper rst reviews the literature around gastronationalism to explore how the concept has developed. It shall raise the example of Cornwall as having much in common with previous case studies of gastronationalism in how heritage foods are protected in a politics concerned with homogenisation. A contrast will then be drawn between the generally discussed contexts, with the strong economic incentives to develop an inclusive food culture as part of a national brand that appeals to tourists in Cornwall, which also contributes to the ‘lived brand’ of Cornwall. To investigate this question, a thematic and qualitative content analysis of local tourist boards’ promotional content is conducted in comparison to other English counties. Finally, it shall conclude that gastronationalism is conceptually relevant to the Cornish context, but the specic nature of cultural revivalism suggests the concept should be expanded to better account for subnational gastronationalist efforts. Herbert Adolphus Miller (1875–1951) is a neglected figure within North American sociology, yet he made a distinctive contribution to the sociology and politics of race relations. He was one of the first sociological critics of eugenics and developed a distinctive approach to race relations and the position of subject minorities derived from a critical analysis of European empires. His approach was complementary to that of Du Bois with whom he had a close relationship. In this article, we trace Miller's critique of eugenics and the idea of 'Americanisation' as a policy of immigrant assimilation, showing the distinctiveness of his approach within North American sociology, including the milieu of Chicago sociology with which he was associated. We also examine the connection between his sociology of race and Park's position on race relations as being a process of gradual assimilation. We conclude with discussion of the Chicago school influence over Gunnar Myrdal's The American Dilemma and the alternative approach to race relations that both Du Bois and Miller had already outlined in the 1920s. In this paper, we demonstrate what influences the evolution of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) debates. Using the idea of 'governing at a distance' (Rose & Miller, 1992) from the Foucauldian governmentality perspective, we identify the mechanisms behind CSR's context‐based evolution. Examining 72 academic texts on CSR from the 1940s to the 2000s, we find that spatial political contexts and power interests shape CSR. We argue that CSR discourse is linked to governing systems and was part of a post‐WWII restructuring to support capitalism against communism in the global order. Our study reveals that academic journals and scholars introduced American CSR concepts to Turkish academia through strong ties to institutions like Harvard Business School and the Ford Foundation, influencing the emergence and change of CSR over time. Changes in CSR discourse are contextually embedded and politically laden with its emergence having a strong governmentality dimension for which academics (through their texts, academic acumen, and affiliated institutions) play a key role as intermediaries governing at a distance. While the critical perspective emphasizes the issues of coercion and contestations, our paper suggests the importance of cooperation and concerted efforts in shaping the global construction of CSR. We have demonstrated the nuanced interplay between the local and global governance of business and academic associations, challenging the perceived rigidity of their boundaries. On the occasion of the Exposition universelle of 1867 the term Americanization first appeared in France. Jules and Edmond Goncourt feared that the exhibition would lead to “the Americanization of France”. My article explores the opposition between the rather unspectacular US-section at the exhibition on the one hand, and the image of an emerging world power on the other. I argue that the notion of Americanization had a threefold function. Firstly, it did not refer to a specific geographic zone, but served as a master discourse absorbing all the phenomena of unfolding French modernity. Secondly, the concept of Americanization transferred the fears, apprehensions and uncertainties of this French modernity outside of France and turned the USA into a culprit for the apparent rationalization of French culture. Third, in claiming Americanization was the key to economic success, the process of industrialization was accelerated and French ambition for leadership over the world reaffirmed.

Liberated on August 15, 1945, Seoul was reorganized as the "capital" of the nation-state instead of a "colonial dual city." Public spaces and buildings in Gyeongseong that were built under Imperial Japan's assimilation policy were dismantled. During the national construction period, national monuments were built, and spaces for national ceremonies were established. Seoul was reshuffled into an ideological space based on the anti-communist ideology of U.S. military rule, the blockade of the 38th Parallel, and the establishment of respective governments of the two Koreas. With the formation of the global Cold War order, the aim was to unify Seoul's spatial power and compete for an inter-Korean regime. Seoul established a spatial order for right-wing nationalism through the U.S. military government and the Rhee Syng-man regime, as confirmed in the Korean literature's spatial representation during the liberation period. However, the literature of Yi Gwang-su and Yeom Sang-seop showed that Seoul functioned as a cultural contact zone during the liberation period through the spatial practice of diverse and heterogeneous subjects who did not move according to the spatial order of such right-wing nationalism. This confirms Seoul's multi-layered spatiality, where cultures, such as modern and pre-modern, Western and Eastern, empires and colonies, and leftists and rightists, are mixed and overlapped. Its spatial representation as a cultural contact zone created a rift in its spatial order, reorganized it as the capital of a nation-state and activated the literary imagination for producing diverse and heterogeneous social spaces. When urban spaces are concerned, Americanization was a cornerstone of the tourist utopia in Spain. In its quest for economic modernization, the development of tourism in the 1960s and 1970s brought about immediate changes in the landscape, which was remodelled to become consumable. Objectivizing both the tourist experience and the consumerism that it induces, postcards offer a meaningful example of this new world in colour. In 2009, Seth Grahame-Smith published Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, sparking a subgenre that situates itself within multiple genres. I draw from the rebellious nature of nineteenth-century proto-feminists who tried to reclaim the female monster as an initial methodology to analyze Grahame-Smith's Elizabeth Bennet. I argue that the (white) women in this horror rewriting inadvertently become the oppressors alongside contextualized zombie theory. This article also explores Grahame-Smith's Charlotte Lucas as a complex female monster, as she is bitten and turned into a zombie, which reflects in part Jane Austen's Charlotte's social status and (potential) spinsterdom. It is the mythos of the zombie that makes Grahame-Smith's Elizabeth Bennet's feminist subversion less remarkable. And it is Charlotte's embodiment of both the rhetorical and the religio-mythic monster that merges two narratives: the Americanized appropriated zombie and the oppressed woman. Grahame-Smith's characters try to embody the resistance of twenty-first feminist sensibilities but fail due to the racial undertones of the zombie tangentially present in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. This article historicizes the character of Bouki in the context of Creole Louisiana, showing how the story of Bouki has evolved to become the story of Kouri-Vini, Louisiana's native and endangered Creole language. This historicization takes place in three distinct periods; those periods are defined by their relation to Kouri-Vini. The first period aligns with the Antebellum period; the second aligns with the early 20th century; and the final coincides with the present day. Moving across these periods, Bouki finds himself demoted, at which point he enters the 'creolized folkloresque.' The folkloresque is a larger mosaic of folkloric forms detached from the material conditions of their production and available to popular culture; for the folkloresque to be creolized designates the same process but under vastly unequal social and material conditions. In short, Bouki enters the creolized folkloresque, becoming a folkoresque figure available to all who find themselves subject to creolized conditions. In the pre-American part of Louisiana's history, creolized conditions included slavery and colonization; post-Americanization, linguistic discrimination plays an outsized role. The obstacles that white women had to face during WWI have been widely documented in books such as Elizabeth Cobbs’, Hello Girls and Diane North’s California at War: The State and People During World War I. However, less attention has been paid to the obstacles faced by Mexican women. My paper draws on newspaper articles, fictionalized accounts, and recent scholarly work to examine how Mexican women were portrayed in contrast to portrayals of white women during this period. The portrayal of Mexican women in the media as illiterate, ignorant, and in need of white saviors, reinforced the stereotype of a hypersexualized damsel in distress. These portrayals of Mexican women reflected existing racism, sexism, and classism by neglecting/diminishing their accomplishments. Recovering the contributions and lived experiences of Mexican American women during this time are crucial to understanding California history in World War I.

This paper critically examines the adaptation of American STEM educational practices within the Croatian education system, assessing their suitability and effectiveness given the significant socio-economic and demographic differences between the two countries. Through comparative analysis, the study juxtaposes the STEM education frameworks of the USA and Croatia, utilizing data from educational policy documents, student performance records, and demographic statistics to explore the transposition of educational models. The findings indicate that the direct transplantation of American STEM educational strategies into the Croatian context has not been entirely successful, due to Croatia's unique industrial landscape and ongoing population decline. The study highlights significant disparities in the effectiveness of STEM education, which are exacerbated by these national differences. The implications of this research are twofold. First, it suggests that countries need to consider their specific industrial and demographic contexts when adopting foreign educational models. Second, the study raises concerns about the sustainability of the Croatian education system's approach to preparing students for future STEM careers. The results call for a reevaluation of policy strategies, suggesting that more localized adaptations of STEM education may be necessary to address the unique challenges faced by countries like Croatia.

2024 marks the fifty-year anniversary of the publication of John Egerton's The Americanization of Dixie: The Southernization of America (1974), a seminal work on regional and national identity. What did this book get right? What did it get wrong? Fifty years later, it still resonates. From states' rights to gun rights, from immigration to Black voter disfranchisement, from the resurgence of white supremacy to the ongoing significance of race in American life, various issues demonstrate not only how the South has Americanized but also how the nation on the whole has southernized. Chinese Postism refers to Chinese versions of poststructuralism, postmodernism and postcolonialism, three major western theoretical trends prefixed with "post." Chinese Postism is largely retranslations of English translations (and interpretations) of French theories of poststructuralism and postmodernism, as well as postcolonialism as American appropriation of French theories. This essay examines the decolonization of the Puerto Rican Christian-Presbyterian liturgy, focusing on the historical relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States and its impact on Christian worship. It explores the early history of Presbyterianism in Puerto Rico, including the merging of local movements with Presbyterian ideas. The essay highlights signs of liturgical resistance, such as the incorporation of Puerto Rican rhythms and instruments in hymnody. The purpose of the article is to present a brief overview of the Americanization movement during the Great War, which strongly impacted the national policy on this matter and its evolution. National unity became particularly important and urgent in the context of war, especially after the U.S. entered the conflict. This involvement led to vigorous efforts to Americanize "all Americans," as advocated by key players. Consequently, considerable attention from the government, various agencies, state and local offices, and several organizations focused on the foreign-born and unassimilated immigrants, who were expected to demonstrate full loyalty, contribute to the U.S. workforce, and engage in patriotic service for the adopted country. The war's urgent demands for workers, recruits, and loyal Americans accelerated the implementation of new Americanization avenues and sped up the assimilation policy for immigrants and the foreign-born. The government, businesses, philanthropies, and various organizations propagated, conducted and implemented numerous programs addressed to these groups. The primary aim was to educate and prepare them for their duties to their new country, particularly aiding the war effort. Many immigrants assimilated through English language courses and thus were better prepared for American life. They contributed to the war effort by Hooverizing, working on the home front, buying Liberty Bonds and enlisting in the U.S. Army. This study focuses on the intralingual translation of children's books from British into American English, supporting the notion that it is more common for British texts to undergo modifications prior to entering the American market. This phenomenon, known as Americanisation, has been a central topic in numerous studies related to intralingual translation. There are apparent reasons for the ' Americanisation ' of these texts, such as their potential marketability (Whitehead 1996). However, further analyses have unveiled a hidden ideology, described as a form of hegemony aimed at challenging the cultural and unique identity of Britain (Leonardi 2020: 58). For the purposes of this study, the intralingual translation from British into American English of Noel Streatfeild's The Painted Garden will be examined to identify and evaluate the translation changes that have occurred in the American edition. This research aims to demonstrate the significant influence that intralingual translation can exert in children's literature (ChL) concerning ideological manipulation and hegemony through the Americanisation of British texts. This article examines the ways in which the Sufi scholar-poet Jalal al-Din Rumi (d. 1273) is appropriated into a specific form of American religiosity through the intra-lingual "collaborative" translations of Coleman Barks. I argue that Barks' attempt to reveal the universal message inherent in Rumi's verses effectively de-Islamizes Rumi's oeuvre and personality as his translation strategy entails elimination of particulars of Islamic culture and adaptation of the poems to the taste and sensitivities of the implied readers. In effect, Barks contributes to the Americanization of Rumi, which ultimately cast him as a "New Age guru" with romantic sensibilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction. Nowadays, young people from all over the world are fascinated by the mass popular culture of South Korea. This process of spread of Korean culture in the world came to be called “Korean current” or “Korean wave”, which became a kind of “Korean cultural boom”. The spread of the “Korean wave” has been compared to a viral disease that first spread throughout East Asia, then Southeast Asia, and eventually engulfed the entire world. Despite the fact that the phenomenon of the “Korean wave” had a sufficient public resonance, due to its novelty and unexpected emergence, it remains an understudied subject of scientific study, especially in the West and in particular in Ukraine. That is why the topic of this study is relevant nowadays. The aim of the article to investigate the mass cultural phenomenon “Korean wave”, to analyze its sources and dynamics of development, to characterize its inherent features, to determine the aspects of its spread and popularization, to investigate its influence on world society and culture, as well as to find out the peculiarities of its influence on the consciousness of the masses. The research methodology is based on a philosophical and cultural analysis of such a mass phenomenon of modern artistic culture as the “Korean wave”. When writing the work, we tried to adhere to the principles of objectivism, systematicity, comprehensiveness and multi-factoriality. To comply with these principles, we used a number of general scientific and special methods in the research: comparative-historical, axiological, phenomenological, logical, retrospective, analytical-synthetic, socio-critical, systemic, structural-functional, generalizing and statistical. Adherence to these principles and methods made it possible to avoid bias and tendencies in judgments. Results. Such a mass cultural phenomenon as the “Korean wave” is a kind of entanglement of opposite principles: modern Western (progressive-innovative) and traditional Eastern (Confucian) cultural values. It manifests itself in the spread of fashion to everything Korean (or to be more precise, South Korean): not only K-pop, dramas, toys, clothes and other types of South Korean entertainment industry, but also Korean cuisine, household items, etc. In the past, despite the geographical proximity and cultural connectivity, for political reasons the countries of Asia largely suppressed cultural exchanges among themselves. China, Korea and Japan began to develop cultural ties between themselves relatively recently. It should also be noted that South Korea is a country that was previously considered a cultural periphery in international exchanges, now it plays an important role in the regionalization of mass culture as a whole in East and Southeast Asia and the product produced by it is considered a center of mass culture and one of the ways of cultural exchange throughout Asia. Conclusions. To sum up, we can say that the great popularity of the “Korean wave” is a kind of leap in the modern culture of South Korea. This phenomenon is represented not only by the synthesis of modern Western (European-American) culture and traditional Eastern (Korean), but also by the fact that in our time it has turned into a powerful locomotive of the entire South Korean economy, a kind of “dragon’s head”. The phenomenon of the “Korean wave” helps to raise the level of the image of South Korea as a prosperous country, and also visually demonstrates the modern South Korean culture to the world. The “Korean Wave” demonstrates to other countries in Asia and to the whole world in general that South Korea is not a periphery in our time, it is no longer a third world country, and it is as modern an urbanized country as most of the developed countries of the West, which has not only modernized its culture, but also spread it, and even managed to influence other countries and their cultures. In this paper, I trace the absent narrative of the Roc's Egg in Aladdin and the Magic Lamp to the film adaptation. Disney, in particular, omits the narrative and by omitting, changes the inner logic of the text. The 1992 animated film and the 2019 live adaptation introduce a power relationship that shifts from the text's structural power into agential power through its genre ideology of Americanisation. In this shift, there is a vanishing element that allows the change and that is the Roc's egg whose meaning is power limitation. I argue that the roc's egg in the text functions, in Jameson and Žižek's lens, as a vanishing mediator that though is absent in the films still finds its meaning subsumed in them. Previous studies investigating postulations that Brunei English was being shaped by American English did not yield any conclusive findings. In recent years, claims of young English‐speaking Bruneians sounding American have become more persistent, thereby precipitating this research. Data was collected from 38 Bruneian Malays who are in their late teens and mid‐twenties and over 900 tokens representative of American English features were analysed. Outcomes reveal that Brunei English is indeed diverging from its traditional exonormative norm, British English, and is displaying new and incipient pronunciations that are indicative of on‐going sound changes. While Americanisation accounts for some of these changes, it is not the only force at play. The findings of this study provide ample evidence that Brunei English is in active state of dynamic change and is steadily progressing towards the next stage of its evolutionary cycle. This paper analyses Anzia Yezierska's depiction of the Jewish American immigrant family in Bread Givers (1925), as well as the main character's fight for independence in her journey to become a self-sufficient member of the American society. I will argue that Yezierska's choice to offer a representation of the hazardous life of the Jewish American immigrant young woman suggests the presence of a cultural duality between the traditions of the Old World, principally represented by the protagonist's father, -an Orthodox rabbi who keeps the modernity of the New World out of his home-; and the aforementioned New World, that, to Sara Smolinsky-the main character of the novel-speaks for the independence that she longs for during her youth. As she herself proclaims, she aims to "become a person" (Yezierska 50), an expression she uses to express her wanting to assert herself as an independent member of the American society, consciously accepting that she will have to face the challenges that exile and patriarchal patterns entail (Bančić 24), but willing to do so in order to become a "real American.". The influence of Georg Simmel on American sociology has been repeatedly pointed out. Robert E. Park and the Chicago School of Sociology in particular owe important impulses to Simmel. It is sometimes overlooked, however, that Simmel himself drew on imported knowledge in his famous essay 'Die Großstädte und das Geistesleben' when focusing on the nervousness of the city dweller. This article will therefore tell the brief story of a reciprocal transatlantic knowledge transfer between Berlin and Chicago. "Time and Migration: How Long-Term Taiwanese Migrants Negotiate Later Life" by Ken Chih-Yan Sun is a book that focuses on the experiences of long-term Taiwanese migrants in the United States and their return to Taiwan.
