The article discusses ideas from the field of typography that may have some relevance to the problem of using letterforms in bookbinding design. The author discusses fundamental principles in design with letterforms and explores some of the functional, aesthetic, and optical problems encountered along the way. In discovering parallels between one design process and another, she attempts to make the concepts and practice of typographic design useful to the special problem of using letterforms in bookbinding.

The article presents the lithographic printing of the poem "The Bewildering Thread," by Enid Mark. It relates that Mark has illustrated the prints with color lithographs with handmade paper flecked with multi-colored thread. Some of the sources of images used by the poet are lace, fabric, embroidery, tapestry, woven rugs, and other hand-worked pieces. Moreover, it discusses typographic designs used, the sculptural quality that imaginatively unites poems and images, and the quality of workmanship.
