1. The current and future cancer burden in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries

Abstract: Abstract Background Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This study aims to provide cancer incidence and mortality estimates in 2020 in the GCC countries alongside future projections for 2040 to shape cancer control policy in the region. Methods The estimated numbers of new cancer cases and deaths were extracted from the GLOBOCAN database developed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer; new cancer cases, cancer deaths, and corresponding age‐standardized incidence and mortality rates for the year 2020 are presented. Results An estimated 42,475 new cancer cases and 19,895 deaths occurred in the GCC countries in 2020, with corresponding age‐standardized incidence and mortality rates of 96.5 and 52.3 per 100,000, respectively. Female breast (16%), colorectal (13%), and thyroid (9%) were the most common types of cancer in the GCC countries, accounting for almost 40% of all cancer incidence. Colorectal (14%) followed by breast cancer (9%) were the leading causes of cancer death, though the magnitude of rates of the major cancer types varied substantially across the GCC countries. Even if we assume rates in the region will remain unchanged over the next two decades, the cancer burden in the GCC will increase by 116% (Saudi Arabia) to 270% (Qatar), reaching nearly 104,000 cancer cases by the year 2040. Conclusion The sharp increase in the estimated cancer incidence and mortality predicted over the next decades in the region requires workforce and financial planning for the healthcare systems in the constituent countries, alongside broader strengthening of national cancer prevention and control efforts.

2. Molecular characterization of patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection in Jordan: implications on response to direct-acting antiviral therapy

Abstract: Objectives: To investigate the molecular characteristics of Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) detected in patients with chronic HCV infection in Jordan. Methods: The study included 48 Jordanian treatment-naïve patients with active chronic HCV recruited from seven governorates. HCV genotype and the resistance-associated substitutions (RAS) profile were investigated by next-generation sequencing of the NS5B, NS5A, and NS3 regions of HCV. Results: “Unusual genotype 4 subtypes” were detected in four (8.3%) patients (4n-n = 1, 4o-n = 2, 4v-n = 1); one patient (2.1%) was co-infected by genotypes 1b+4a. Overall prevalence of NS5A RASs was 38.3% (3% cutoff); genotype 4a showed the highest NS5A RAS prevalence (n = 11, 55.0%). Overall prevalence of NS3 RASs was 21.8% (7/32), all genotype 1a-infected patients. Conclusions: We report, for the first time in Jordanian patients with chronic HCV infection, the detection of unusual genotype 4 subtypes 4n, 4o, and 4v. Baseline RASs in NS5A are frequent, with complex RASs patterns in some of the unusual subtypes. Our data support the need for sequencing surveillance programs in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and the Middle East and North African region to monitor response to treatment in these subtypes and to facilitate the World Health Organization's 2030 elimination strategy.

3. Determining the current prevalence of β-thalassemia variants in Jordan

Abstract: Introduction This study aimed to define and update the prevalence of β-pathogenic thalassemia variants in Jordan. Material and methods A total of 158 patients with suspected β-thalassemia minor were examined using (CBC and Hb-electrophoresis), and (PCR with hybridization) to identify the type of pathogenic variants. Results Five common and seven rare β-thalassemia pathogenic variants were identified in this study. In addition to three variants that had not been previously reported: -101 [C>T], IVS 1.130 [G>C], and codon 44 [-C]. Conclusions The results provide a new update on the existing Jordanian beta-thalassemia variant database that will aid the enhancement of diagnostic and treatment protocols for patients.

4. Applying value-based strategies to accelerate access to novel cancer medications: guidance from the Oncology Health Economics Expert Panel in Qatar (Q-OHEP)

Abstract: Abstract Background In line with global trends, cancer incidence and mortality may have decreased for specific types of cancer in Qatar. However, the cancer-related burden on patients, healthcare systems, and the economy is expected to expand; thus, cancer remains a significant public healthcare issue in Qatar. Qatar’s free access to cancer care represents a considerable economic burden. Ensuring the best utilization of financial resources in the healthcare sector is important to provide unified and fair access to cancer care for all patients. Experts from the Qatar Oncology Health Economics Expert Panel (Q-OHEP) aimed to establish a consistent and robust base for evaluating oncology/hematology medications; involve patients’ insights to accelerate access to cutting-edge medications; increase the value of cancer care; and reach a consensus for using cost-effective strategies and efficient methodologies in cancer treatment. Methods The Q-OHEP convened on 30 November 2021 for a 3-hour meeting to discuss cancer management, therapeutics, and health economics in Qatar, focusing on four domains: (1) regulatory, (2) procurement, (3) treatment, and (4) patients. Discussions, guided by a moderator, focused on a list of suggested open-ended questions. Results Some of the salient recommendations included the development of a formal, fast-track, preliminary approval pathway for drugs needed by patients with severe disease or in critical condition; and encouraging and promoting the conduct of local clinical trials and real-world observational studies using existing registry data. The Q-OHEP also recommended implementing a forecast system using treatment center data based on the supply/demand of formulary oncology drugs to detect treatment patterns, estimate needs, expedite procurement, and prevent shortages/delays. Furthermore, the panel discussed the needs to define value concerning cancer treatment in Qatar, implement value-based models for reimbursement decision-making such as health technology assessment and multiple-criteria decision analysis, and promote patient education and involvement/feedback in developing and implementing cancer management guidelines. Conclusion Herein, we summarize the first Q-OHEP consensus recommendations, which aim to provide a solid basis for evaluating, registering, and approving new cancer medications to accelerate patient access to novel cancer treatments in Qatar; promote/facilitate the adoption and collection of patient-reported outcomes; and implement value-based cancer care in Qatar.

5. Patterns and trends of hepatitis C virus infection in Jordan: an observational study

Abstract: BackgroundHepatitis C virus (HCV) infection levels in Jordan remain uncertain. No HCV national population-based survey has ever been conducted in the country. To meet the World Health Organization’s target of reducing HCV incidence to ≤5 per 100,000 people per year by 2030, it is essential to determine the infection levels, identify affected individuals and populations, and provide appropriate treatment using direct-acting antivirals to individuals carrying the virus.MethodsThe study utilized the HCV testing database of 28,798 attendees of Biolab Diagnostic Laboratories in Jordan, covering the period from January 19, 2010, to May 26, 2023. Cross-sectional and cohort study analyses were conducted, including estimating HCV antibody (Ab) prevalence, examining associations with HCV Ab positivity, determining the HCV viremic rate, and estimating HCV incidence rate using a retrospective cohort study design.ResultsA total of 27,591 individuals, with a median age of 31.3 and 52.9% being females, underwent HCV Ab testing, while 1,450 individuals, with a median age of 42.2 and 32.8% being females, underwent HCV RNA PCR testing. The study sample HCV Ab prevalence was 4.0% (95% CI: 3.7–4.2%). After applying probability weights, the weighted HCV Ab prevalence was 5.8% (95% CI: 4.6–7.3%). Age was strongly associated with HCV Ab positivity, particularly among individuals aged 50 years or older, who had 10-fold higher odds of being HCV Ab positive compared to those aged 10–19 years. Males had 2.41-fold higher odds of testing positive for HCV Ab compared to females. The HCV viremic rate was 54.1% (95% CI: 43.0–65.0%). The cumulative incidence of HCV infection, after 5 years of follow-up, was estimated to be 0.41% (95% CI: 0.17–0.99%). The HCV incidence rate was calculated at 1.19 per 1,000 person-years (95% CI, 0.50–2.87).ConclusionPrevalence and incidence of HCV infection were substantial, estimated at ~5% and 1 per 1,000 person-years, respectively, and highlighting the presence of core groups actively engaged in the virus’ acquisition and transmission. The high observed viremic rate indicates the need for expanding HCV treatment efforts to effectively control HCV transmission in Jordan. Utilizing quality diagnostic laboratories and innovative testing strategies is key to identifying infection carriers and facilitating linkage to treatment and care.

7. Degradation Study of Bromelain-extracted Virgin Coconut Oil Based on Peroxide and Fatty Acid Formation Under the Elevated Temperatures

Abstract: This research seeks to ascertain the kinetic parameters of VCO degradation based on the formation of peroxide and free fatty acids and to evaluate the shelf life of bromelain-extracted VCO at various temperatures. The kinetic parameters and shelf life of VCO were determined by measuring the value of peroxides and free fatty acids (FFA) concentration at temperatures of 50 ºC to 200 ºC. The heating was performed in a 1 L conical flask immersed in the paraffin bath. Samples were collected for each temperature at 0 to 60 minutes. The rate constant of peroxide and FFA formation was determined by regression analysis using Microsoft Excel, based on the plot of sampling time and value of peroxide and FFA concentration. The rate constant of peroxide formation escalated from 0.0114 to 0.1419 mEq Kg-1 min-1 when the VCO was heated at 50 ºC to 200 ºC. Meanwhile, the rate constant of FFA formation rose from 0.0188 to 0.0393 % min-1 when subjected to heating at 50 ºC to 200 ºC. Based on the shelf-life prediction established by Indonesian National Standards or the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community, the shelf-life of bromelain- extracted VCO varies from 10 to 3 hours at temperatures ranging from 2 ºC to 50 ºC. It was determined that elevating the temperature reduced the shelf-life of bromelain-extracted VCO. These findings suggest that temperature is crucial for the stability of bromelain-extracted VCO.

Abstract: Preparation of serum in the form of extract nanoemulsions allows effective delivery of active ingredients to the skin due to the more stable nanoemulsions, lower viscosity, transparent visual aspects, and high surface area caused by the small globule size. This study aims to obtain an optimal 96% ethanol concentration and sonication time in forming stable nanoemulsions at temperatures of 4° and 40°C with an active ingredient of moringa leaf extracts. The experiment was performed in four sets of 96% ethanol concentration (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) and three sonication periods (30, 60, and 90 minutes). The freeze-and-thaw method was utilized to evaluate the stability of the nanoemulsions. The analysis unveiled that a 96% ethanol concentration of 10% and a sonication time of 46 minutes was the most appropriate formula, generating a particle size of 30.49 nm with a volume of 73.35%. At the same time, the stability test of the preparation revealed that storage time significantly affected the pH response. However, it did not significantly affect the viscosity response.

11. Restructuring Vector Quantization with the Rotation Trick

Abstract: Vector Quantized Variational AutoEncoders (VQ-VAEs) are designed to compress a continuous input to a discrete latent space and reconstruct it with minimal distortion. They operate by maintaining a set of vectors -- often referred to as the codebook -- and quantizing each encoder output to the nearest vector in the codebook. However, as vector quantization is non-differentiable, the gradient to the encoder flows around the vector quantization layer rather than through it in a straight-through approximation. This approximation may be undesirable as all information from the vector quantization operation is lost. In this work, we propose a way to propagate gradients through the vector quantization layer of VQ-VAEs. We smoothly transform each encoder output into its corresponding codebook vector via a rotation and rescaling linear transformation that is treated as a constant during backpropagation. As a result, the relative magnitude and angle between encoder output and codebook vector becomes encoded into the gradient as it propagates through the vector quantization layer and back to the encoder. Across 11 different VQ-VAE training paradigms, we find this restructuring improves reconstruction metrics, codebook utilization, and quantization error. 12. Prevalence of IgE‐mediated sensitization in patients with suspected food allergic reactions in Jordan

Abstract: Abstract Background Despite the recognition of food allergies as a significant cause of morbidity and a growing public health burden worldwide, there are no epidemiological studies addressing food sensitization and allergy in Jordan. Objective To conduct an epidemiological study that retrospectively analyzes sensitization data from 3463 patients with suspected immunoglobulin E (IgE)‐mediated food allergic reactions who performed specific IgE tests in our laboratories in Jordan. Methods Specific IgE (s‐IgE) tests were analyzed for patients who performed enzyme allegro‐sorbent testing based on either self‐reported food allergy or upon physician's request. Results 2.3% of the analyzed samples were cross‐reactive to carbohydrate determinants. A quarter of the patients were sensitized to one or more food allergens, with males having higher odds of being s‐IgE positive. Furthermore, a higher prevalence of sensitization was seen in infants and children compared with adults. s‐IgE was most frequently found against cow milk (11.2%), pistachio (4.9%), soybean (4.6%), cherry (4.4%), and orange (4.4%). Interestingly, the s‐IgE class distribution profile of pistachio differed from the rest of the top hits being skewed away from the weak class 1 leaning more towards higher IgE classes. Food allergen sensitization was age group‐dependent: milk, tree nuts, and eggs were the main food groups causing sensitization in infants, while it was fruits followed by milk in children and adults. Conclusions Our work represents the first epidemiological study addressing food sensitization in Jordan. This study lays a solid foundation for future studies that can help better guide food allergy diagnosis, patient dietary modifications, and food elimination plans, as well as assist decision‐makers in the region to develop national strategies for an efficient and sustainable healthcare system.

Abstract: Introduction. The adverse effects awareness of the chemicals misuse applied in food production is continuously increasing among consumers. In parallel, there is a rising trend in purchasing organically grown foods. Objective. This study aimed to evaluate Algerian consumers awareness and attitudes toward organic food products, and identify factors influencing their decision to purchase these organically grown foods. Material and methods. Survey data were obtained from 429 consumers via a 32-scale structured questionnaire, and evaluated with SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 25.0 using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and structural equation modeling (SEM). Hypotheses were verified by evaluating data via SEM, where mediating variables were attitude and purchasing intention. Results. The main reasons for Algerian consumers to consume organic food were health concerns, followed by environmentally friendly, pesticide-free, and better taste. Moreover, three factors namely health consciousness, subjective norms, and perception of availability were revealed to influence consumer buying behaviour towards organic food products. This occurred either by a direct effect such as availability perception or by a partial mediation of purchase intention, like subjective norms or by full mediating of attitude toward organic food, and purchase intention as the health consciousness factor did. Conclusion. The present study can guide and help agricultural policymakers to promote shifting to organic farming, which would benefit the ecosystem and human wellbeing. Furthermore, the report provides clear guidance for industry professionals who need to develop successful marketing strategies by addressing the main motivators of organic food consumption.

14. Automatic Real-word Error Correction in Persian Text

Abstract: Automatic spelling correction stands as a pivotal challenge within the ambit of natural language processing (NLP), demanding nuanced solutions. Traditional spelling correction techniques are typically only capable of detecting and correcting non-word errors, such as typos and misspellings. However, context-sensitive errors, also known as real-word errors, are more challenging to detect because they are valid words that are used incorrectly in a given context. The Persian language, characterized by its rich morphology and complex syntax, presents formidable challenges to automatic spelling correction systems. Furthermore, the limited availability of Persian language resources makes it difficult to train effective spelling correction models. This paper introduces a cutting-edge approach for precise and efficient real-word error correction in Persian text. Our methodology adopts a structured, multi-tiered approach, employing semantic analysis, feature selection, and advanced classifiers to enhance error detection and correction efficacy. The innovative architecture discovers and stores semantic similarities between words and phrases in Persian text. The classifiers accurately identify real-word errors, while the semantic ranking algorithm determines the most probable corrections for real-word errors, taking into account specific spelling correction and context properties such as context, semantic similarity, and edit-distance measures. Evaluations have demonstrated that our proposed method surpasses previous Persian real-word error correction models. Our method achieves an impressive F-measure of 96.6% in the detection phase and an accuracy of 99.1% in the correction phase. 15. PERCORE: A Deep Learning-Based Framework for Persian Spelling Correction with Phonetic Analysis

Abstract: This research introduces a state-of-the-art Persian spelling correction system that seamlessly integrates deep learning techniques with phonetic analysis, significantly enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of natural language processing (NLP) for Persian. Utilizing a fine-tuned language representation model, our methodology effectively combines deep contextual analysis with phonetic insights, adeptly correcting both non-word and real-word spelling errors. This strategy proves particularly effective in tackling the unique complexities of Persian spelling, including its elaborate morphology and the challenge of homophony. A thorough evaluation on a wide-ranging dataset confirms our system's superior performance compared to existing methods, with impressive F1-Scores of 0.890 for detecting real-word errors and 0.905 for correcting them. Additionally, the system demonstrates a strong capability in non-word error correction, achieving an F1-Score of 0.891. These results illustrate the significant benefits of incorporating phonetic insights into deep learning models for spelling correction. Our contributions not only advance Persian language processing by providing a versatile solution for a variety of NLP applications but also pave the way for future research in the field, emphasizing the critical role of phonetic analysis in developing effective spelling correction system.

Abstract: Nowadays the effort estimation of software development is crucial in Software projects management. Not only have the accurate estimate of cost help customers and investors, but also it will be effective in rational decision-making in the implementation and management of software projects. Various estimation models have been invented and used so far. Many of the current effort estimation approaches are adopted by collecting data from previous projects. Case-based reasoning (CBR) is one of the successful techniques of effort estimation in software projects. This method alone is not very accurate, a defect which can be corrected by creating hybrid models. In this paper, CBR was combined with two separate metaheuristic algorithms including particle swarm optimization (PSO) and the firefly algorithm to propose a new hybrid model. Then the performance of the proposed model was evaluated. According to the results of the proposed model on Cocomo, Albrecht and Maxwell datasets, the firefly algorithm showed an acceptable performance.

Abstract: Infected skin wounds are common in pet animals. Following an infected severe bite wound in a dog with marked necrotic aftermath, natural honey was successfully used alongside systemic antibiotic therapy to hasten healing. The condition improved with speed and regeneration of skin tissue, avoiding sloughing. The wound took 168 days to heal and to form a scar. Natural honey can be considered as a wound management tool, as it is both highly effective, can render a low cost therapy and less managemental expenditure compared to other specialized therapies and techniques.

Abstract: How well do existing federated learning algorithms learn from client devices that return model updates with a significant time delay? Is it even possible to learn effectively from clients that report back minutes, hours, or days after being scheduled? We answer these questions by developing Monte Carlo simulations of client latency that are guided by real-world applications. We study synchronous optimization algorithms like FedAvg and FedAdam as well as the asynchronous FedBuff algorithm, and observe that all these existing approaches struggle to learn from severely delayed clients. To improve upon this situation, we experiment with modifications, including distillation regularization and exponential moving averages of model weights. Finally, we introduce two new algorithms, FARe-DUST and FeAST-on-MSG, based on distillation and averaging, respectively. Experiments with the EMNIST, CIFAR-100, and StackOverflow benchmark federated learning tasks demonstrate that our new algorithms outperform existing ones in terms of accuracy for straggler clients, while also providing better trade-offs between training time and total accuracy.

Abstract: In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

25. Noise misleads rotation invariant algorithms on sparse targets

Abstract: It is well known that the class of rotation invariant algorithms are suboptimal even for learning sparse linear problems when the number of examples is below the "dimension" of the problem. This class includes any gradient descent trained neural net with a fully-connected input layer (initialized with a rotationally symmetric distribution). The simplest sparse problem is learning a single feature out of $d$ features. In that case the classification error or regression loss grows with $1-k/n$ where $k$ is the number of examples seen. These lower bounds become vacuous when the number of examples $k$ reaches the dimension $d$. We show that when noise is added to this sparse linear problem, rotation invariant algorithms are still suboptimal after seeing $d$ or more examples. We prove this via a lower bound for the Bayes optimal algorithm on a rotationally symmetrized problem. We then prove much lower upper bounds on the same problem for simple non-rotation invariant algorithms. Finally we analyze the gradient flow trajectories of many standard optimization algorithms in some simple cases and show how they veer toward or away from the sparse targets. We believe that our trajectory categorization will be useful in designing algorithms that can exploit sparse targets and our method for proving lower bounds will be crucial for analyzing other families of algorithms that admit different classes of invariances.

26. SpeCrawler: Generating OpenAPI Specifications from API Documentation Using Large Language Models

Abstract: In the digital era, the widespread use of APIs is evident. However, scalable utilization of APIs poses a challenge due to structure divergence observed in online API documentation. This underscores the need for automatic tools to facilitate API consumption. A viable approach involves the conversion of documentation into an API Specification format. While previous attempts have been made using rule-based methods, these approaches encountered difficulties in generalizing across diverse documentation. In this paper we introduce SpeCrawler, a comprehensive system that utilizes large language models (LLMs) to generate OpenAPI Specifications from diverse API documentation through a carefully crafted pipeline. 27. H-EYE: Holistic Resource Modeling and Management for Diversely Scaled Edge-Cloud Systems

Abstract: Computing systems have been evolving to be more pervasive, heterogeneous, and dynamic. An increasing number of emerging domains now rely on diverse edge to cloud continuum where the execution of applications often spans various tiers of systems with significantly heterogeneous computational capabilities. Resources in each tier are often handled in isolation due to scalability and privacy concerns. However, better overall resource utilization could be achieved if different tiers of systems had the means to communicate their computational capabilities. In this paper, we propose H-EYE, a universal approach to holistically capture diverse computational characteristics of edge-cloud systems with arbitrary topologies and to manage the assignment of tasks to the computational resources with the whole continuum in the scope. Our proposed work introduces two significant innovations: (1) We present a multi-layer, graph-based hardware (HW) representation and a modular performance modeling interface that could capture interactions and inference between different computing and communication resources in the system at desired level of detail. (2) We introduce a novel orchestrator mechanism that leverages the graph-based HW representation to hierarchically locate target devices that a given set of tasks could be mapped to. Orchestrator provides isolation for various device groups and allows hierarchical abstraction to scalably find mappings that satisfy system deadlines. The orchestrator internally relies on a novel traverser that takes shared resource slowdown into account. We demonstrate the utility and flexibility of H-EYE on edge-server systems that are deployed on the field in two different disciplines, improving up to 47% latency over baselines with less than 2% scheduling overhead, Comment: Major revision

28. Tempered Calculus for ML: Application to Hyperbolic Model Embedding

Abstract: Most mathematical distortions used in ML are fundamentally integral in nature: $f$-divergences, Bregman divergences, (regularized) optimal transport distances, integral probability metrics, geodesic distances, etc. In this paper, we unveil a grounded theory and tools which can help improve these distortions to better cope with ML requirements. We start with a generalization of Riemann integration that also encapsulates functions that are not strictly additive but are, more generally, $t$-additive, as in nonextensive statistical mechanics. Notably, this recovers Volterra's product integral as a special case. We then generalize the Fundamental Theorem of calculus using an extension of the (Euclidean) derivative. This, along with a series of more specific Theorems, serves as a basis for results showing how one can specifically design, alter, or change fundamental properties of distortion measures in a simple way, with a special emphasis on geometric- and ML-related properties that are the metricity, hyperbolicity, and encoding. We show how to apply it to a problem that has recently gained traction in ML: hyperbolic embeddings with a "cheap" and accurate encoding along the hyperbolic vs Euclidean scale. Abstract: This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

32. The effect of redshift function on the Weak Energy Conditions in f(R) Wormholes

Abstract: In the present paper, we investigate traversable wormhole solutions determined by an exponential shape function and fractional redshift function in the background of four viable $f(R)$ models. Although in the absence of the redshift function $\varphi(r)$ the null energy condition (NEC) and weak energy condition (WEC) are violated, we find that considering the redshift function, NEC and WEC are respected by choosing the appropriate parameters in the models. We also investigate the conditions of stability and absence of anti-gravity effects for these wormholes. Our results show that in the case of $\varphi(r) \neq 0$ these conditions are satisfied easier than the case of $\varphi(r)=0$. Finally we calculate the deflection angle using the gravitational lensing effect. We show that the deflection angle increases by inserting the redshift function., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures

33. The Tempered Hilbert Simplex Distance and Its Application To Non-linear Embeddings of TEMs

Abstract: Tempered Exponential Measures (TEMs) are a parametric generalization of the exponential family of distributions maximizing the tempered entropy function among positive measures subject to a probability normalization of their power densities. Calculus on TEMs relies on a deformed algebra of arithmetic operators induced by the deformed logarithms used to define the tempered entropy. In this work, we introduce three different parameterizations of finite discrete TEMs via Legendre functions of the negative tempered entropy function. In particular, we establish an isometry between such parameterizations in terms of a generalization of the Hilbert log cross-ratio simplex distance to a tempered Hilbert co-simplex distance. Similar to the Hilbert geometry, the tempered Hilbert distance is characterized as a $t$-symmetrization of the oriented tempered Funk distance. We motivate our construction by introducing the notion of $t$-lengths of smooth curves in a tautological Finsler manifold. We then demonstrate the properties of our generalized structure in different settings and numerically examine the quality of its differentiable approximations for optimization in machine learning settings.

Abstract: Large Language Models like ChatGPT demonstrate a remarkable capacity to learn new concepts during inference without any fine-tuning. However, visual models trained to detect new objects during inference have been unable to replicate this ability, and instead either perform poorly or require meta-training and/or fine-tuning on similar objects. In this work, we propose a meta-learning algorithm that emulates Large Language Models by learning new visual concepts during inference without fine-tuning. Our approach leverages a frozen pre-trained feature extractor, and analogous to in-context learning, recasts visual meta-learning as sequence modeling over datapoints with known labels and a test datapoint with an unknown label. On 8 out of 11 meta-learning benchmarks, our approach -- without meta-training or fine-tuning -- exceeds or matches the state-of-the-art algorithm, P>M>F, which is meta-trained on these benchmarks. 35. Heterogeneous Federated Learning Using Knowledge Codistillation

Abstract: Federated Averaging, and many federated learning algorithm variants which build upon it, have a limitation: all clients must share the same model architecture. This results in unused modeling capacity on many clients, which limits model performance. To address this issue, we propose a method that involves training a small model on the entire pool and a larger model on a subset of clients with higher capacity. The models exchange information bidirectionally via knowledge distillation, utilizing an unlabeled dataset on a server without sharing parameters. We present two variants of our method, which improve upon federated averaging on image classification and language modeling tasks. We show this technique can be useful even if only out-of-domain or limited in-domain distillation data is available. Additionally, the bi-directional knowledge distillation allows for domain transfer between the models when different pool populations introduce domain shift.

Abstract: The generalization ability of machine learning models degrades significantly when the test distribution shifts away from the training distribution. We investigate the problem of training models that are robust to shifts caused by changes in the distribution of class-priors or group-priors. The presence of skewed training priors can often lead to the models overfitting to spurious features. Unlike existing methods, which optimize for either the worst or the average performance over classes or groups, our work is motivated by the need for finer control over the robustness properties of the model. We present an extremely lightweight post-hoc approach that performs scaling adjustments to predictions from a pre-trained model, with the goal of minimizing a distributionally robust loss around a chosen target distribution. These adjustments are computed by solving a constrained optimization problem on a validation set and applied to the model during test time. Our constrained optimization objective is inspired by a natural notion of robustness to controlled distribution shifts. Our method comes with provable guarantees and empirically makes a strong case for distributional robust post-hoc classifiers. 39. Optimal Transport with Tempered Exponential Measures

Abstract: In the field of optimal transport, two prominent subfields face each other: (i) unregularized optimal transport, "\`a-la-Kantorovich", which leads to extremely sparse plans but with algorithms that scale poorly, and (ii) entropic-regularized optimal transport, "\`a-la-Sinkhorn-Cuturi", which gets near-linear approximation algorithms but leads to maximally un-sparse plans. In this paper, we show that an extension of the latter to tempered exponential measures, a generalization of exponential families with indirect measure normalization, gets to a very convenient middle ground, with both very fast approximation algorithms and sparsity, which is under control up to sparsity patterns. In addition, our formulation fits naturally in the unbalanced optimal transport problem setting.

Abstract: Training algorithms, broadly construed, are an essential part of every deep learning pipeline. Training algorithm improvements that speed up training across a wide variety of workloads (e.g., better update rules, tuning protocols, learning rate schedules, or data selection schemes) could save time, save computational resources, and lead to better, more accurate, models. Unfortunately, as a community, we are currently unable to reliably identify training algorithm improvements, or even determine the state-of-the-art training algorithm. In this work, using concrete experiments, we argue that real progress in speeding up training requires new benchmarks that resolve three basic challenges faced by empirical comparisons of training algorithms: (1) how to decide when training is complete and precisely measure training time, (2) how to handle the sensitivity of measurements to exact workload details, and (3) how to fairly compare algorithms that require hyperparameter tuning. In order to address these challenges, we introduce a new, competitive, time-to-result benchmark using multiple workloads running on fixed hardware, the AlgoPerf: Training Algorithms benchmark. Our benchmark includes a set of workload variants that make it possible to detect benchmark submissions that are more robust to workload changes than current widely-used methods. Finally, we evaluate baseline submissions constructed using various optimizers that represent current practice, as well as other optimizers that have recently received attention in the literature. 44. Boosting with Tempered Exponential Measures

Abstract: One of the most popular ML algorithms, AdaBoost, can be derived from the dual of a relative entropy minimization problem subject to the fact that the positive weights on the examples sum to one. Essentially, harder examples receive higher probabilities. We generalize this setup to the recently introduced {\it tempered exponential measure}s (TEMs) where normalization is enforced on a specific power of the measure and not the measure itself. TEMs are indexed by a parameter $t$ and generalize exponential families ($t=1$). Our algorithm, $t$-AdaBoost, recovers AdaBoost~as a special case ($t=1$). We show that $t$-AdaBoost retains AdaBoost's celebrated exponential convergence rate when $t\in [0,1)$ while allowing a slight improvement of the rate's hidden constant compared to $t=1$. $t$-AdaBoost partially computes on a generalization of classical arithmetic over the reals and brings notable properties like guaranteed bounded leveraging coefficients for $t\in [0,1)$. From the loss that $t$-AdaBoost minimizes (a generalization of the exponential loss), we show how to derive a new family of {\it tempered} losses for the induction of domain-partitioning classifiers like decision trees. Crucially, strict properness is ensured for all while their boosting rates span the full known spectrum. Experiments using $t$-AdaBoost+trees display that significant leverage can be achieved by tuning $t$.
