8. One Loop Partition Function in Plane Waves R-R Background

Abstract

We compute the one loop partition function of type IIB string in plane wave R-R 5-form background $F^5$ using both path integral and operator formalisms and show that the two results agree perfectly. The result turns out to be equal to the partition function in the flat background. We also study the Tadpole cancellation for the unoriented closed and open string model in plane wave R-R 5-form background studied in hep-th/0203249 and find that the cancellation of the Tadpole requires the gauge group to be SO(8)., Comment: 12 pages, no figures, latex, misprint corrected and reference added; to appear in JHEP

10. Fivebrane instantons and higher derivative couplings in type I theory

Abstract

We express the infinite sum of D-fivebrane instanton corrections to ${\cal R}^2$ couplings in ${\cal N}=4$ type I string vacua, in terms of an elliptic index counting 1/2-BPS excitations in the effective $Sp(N)$ brane theory. We compute the index explicitly in the infrared, where the effective theory is argued to flow to an orbifold CFT. The form of the instanton sum agrees completely with the predicted formula from a dual one-loop computation in type IIA theory on $K3\times T^2$. The proposed CFT provides a proper description of the whole spectrum of masses, charges and multiplicities for 1/2- and 1/4- BPS states, associated to bound states of D5-branes and KK momenta. These results are applied to show how fivebrane instanton sums, entering higher derivative couplings which are sensitive to 1/4-BPS contributions, also match the perturbative results in the dual type IIA theory., Comment: 14 pages, corrected some typos. Abstract

PURPOSE: To evaluate the long-term efficacy of prostate cancer control and complication rates, in the elderly, after focal therapy with high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between June 1997 and March 2000, patients with localized prostate cancer were included into a focal therapy protocol. Inclusion criteria were: PSA < 10 ng/mL, < 3 positive biopsies with only 1 lobe involved, clinical stage < T2a, Gleason score < 7 (3+4), negative CT scan and bone scan. Hemi-ablation of the prostate was performed with the Ablatherm(R) device. Survival, complication rates and urinary continence were evaluated. Control biopsies were performed at 1 year. Treatment failure was defined as a positive biopsy or need for salvage therapy. RESULTS: Twelve patients with a mean age 70 years were included. Median follow-up was 10 years. Control prostate biopsies were negative in 11/12 (91%) patients. Overall survival was 83% (10/12) and cancer specific survival was 100% at 10 years. Two patients died from other causes. Recurrence free survival was 90% (95% CI; 0.71-1) at 5 years, and 38% (95% CI; 0.04-0.73) at 10 years. Five patients had salvage therapy with repeat HIFU (n = 1) or hormonal therapy (n = 4) and all salvage patients were alive at 10 years. No patients developed lymph node or bone metastasis. No patients suffered from urinary incontinence. International Prostate Symptom Score was stable at 1 year. Complications included two urinary tract infections and one episode of acute urinary retention. CONCLUSIONS: Hemi-prostate ablation with HIFU can be safely performed in selected elderly patients with adequate long-term cancer control and low complication rates. Results from larger prospective studies using improved imaging techniques and extensive biopsy protocols are awaited.

Abstract

Impinging liquid jets have been demonstrated to be an effective means of providing high heat transfer rates, and widely used in designing cooling systems for electronic modules, plastic manufacturing, and many other applications in the industry. It is very important to study the factors which govern the heat transfer rate in the liquid impingement on a heated surface to ensure cooling efficiency. The paper presents a numerical approach to study the convective heat transfer of circular liquid jet impingement on a heated surface where influencing factors like surface tension, gravity, viscosity, surface temperature etc. are considered. Finite volume method (FVM) with pressure based coupled solver implemented in commercial ANSYS Fluent CFD is used to solve Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equations. Free surface flow is modelled using Volume of Fluid (VOF) Method along with the compressive scheme and sharp interface modelling which accurately captures interfaces between immiscible fluids. The liquid film formation and the heat transfer phenomenon are examined in detail. The influence of jet velocity profiles on pressure distribution and heat transfer along the heated surface is presented.
