3. Evidence and description of the earthquake and the possibility of finding the paleo-earthquake concentrating on the Tabas Earthquake.

Abstract

Earthquakes with a large magnitude affect people, man-made buildings and environments. This information can be a dataset of the earthquake description consisting of people's feelings, the building damages, and the effects on the earth. For the building damages, different types of buildings should be considered to find the best dataset of the earthquake. For the effects on the earth, various environmental effects such as the displacements, landslides, rock falls, liquefactions, surface and chemical changes on the rivers and springs, etc. should be considered; more information of more situations, more accurate exports of the earthquake. According to global research in this field, using this information can be useful to assess the macroseismic intensity of the affected areas and the epicentral earthquake. Moreover, having a good dataset of these descriptions, the macroseismic parameters of the earthquake can also be estimated. It can be useful especially for the earthquakes with low or/ and lack of information in the earthquake catalogs and also paleo-earthquakes. This study concentrates on the Tabas earthquake, which occurred on September 16, 1978, in the Tabas region located in eastern Iran. This was a shallow earthquake felt in a region with 1130000km2 total affected area. Such as every large earthquake, several phenomena were observed related to this event. For example, it destroyed 1500 building units and 30 Qantas. Although the epicenter of the earthquake was located in a situation with a poor population, it destroyed or severely damaged 90 villages and slightly damaged other 50 villages. The surface rupture of this event was extended for about 85km with no connection on the surface with a trust mechanism. Moreover, 150cm vertical displacement and 300cm horizontal displacement were reported for this event. According to these descriptions of Tabas earthquake with magnitude more than 6, occurring more earthquakes in the past can be usual for this region; then, more investigation on this field is necessary. Therefore, in this study, primarily investigation on this region was started using the available maps (e.g. geology map) and images (e.g. Landsat) and for the following researches the locations near Ali Abad in NW of Tabas were suggested for the field study and sampling to date their absolute ages. 10. Seismicity of the Middle East: A Revision on the Seimicity Parameters

Abstract

The seismicity of the middle east is considered in this article in view point of the reevaluation of earthquake hazard in the region. The Middle East region with high range of seismicity especially in the extensive band in which the Alps and the Himalayas meet, accounts as an important area of interest for seismologists. Preparing a comprehensive database for all the past events is an effortful project regardless of the location. Considering the lake of seismic research investment in some undeveloped countries, the Middle East criteria highly needs to be studied for gathering a collection of data in the format of earthquake catalog. There are two main types of earthquake catalog: one which refers to the time of seismic monitoring is called instrumental catalog and the other whose records are belong to the time before advent of seismic monitoring instruments is called Historical catalog. Considering the range of Depths for Each Region / Seismic Source Zone: The teleseismic depths are estimated in the region of middle east countries to be about 5 to 25 km for Iran and Eastern Anatolies region, 5 to 45 for Makran and Pakistan region, and 5 to 30 for Caucaussus region, and 5 to 35 for Kopet-Dagh region. Level of Completeness for the seismic source zones having few/ less seismic activity. The level of Completeness for hole region seems to be M5.5 for time period of 1000 to 1800, and 5.0 for 1800 to 1900 and 4.5 for 1900 to 1960 and 4.0 for the time period of 1960 to 2010. Abstract

This article uses, for the first time, the absolute age for a Qanat system, to determine the slip rate of an earthquake fault. In Iran, many ofQanat galleries were dug in the vicinity of, or directly upon, active faults. In some areas such as Dasht-e Bayaz fault, line of craters are displaced by the activity of the fault, which lead to dry Qanat stream, and consequently to dig new shafts by habitants. By means of measuring the offset between new shafts and old shafts, and considering Qanat antiquity, the estimation of fault slip-rate, which is one of the prominent elements in hazard assessment, becomes possible. This study uses absolute age for a Qanat system, obtained through optically stimulated luminescence dating of grains in spoil heaps of Qanat wells. Feldspar single-grain dating of silt sediments that overlie the construction spoil show that the Miam Qanat was maintained until at least 1.6-2.6 ka. Combination of this age and the 10 meter displacement of Qanat line of shafts byDasht-e Bayaz fault provide a slip rate of 5.2-4.3 mm/yr for this fault. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
