Nasal packing is a critical procedure in postoperative care and trauma management aimed at controlling bleeding, providing structural support, and promoting tissue healing. However, conventional nasal packs often lead to discomfort, infection risks, and secondary tissue damage. To address these challenges, this study explores the potential use of biodegradable and biocompatible gelatin–carrageenan composite scaffolds as an alternative nasal packing material. Five compositions of gelatin–carrageenan scaffolds (ratios 10:0, 7:3, 5:5, 3:7, and 0:10) were fabricated and evaluated for physicochemical properties, hemocompatibility, and cytocompatibility. Results suggest that balanced ratios, such as 7:3 and 5:5, may provide a combination of structural integrity, improved biocompatibility, and controlled degradation, making them a potential candidate for nasal packing applications. The scaffolds exhibited low cytotoxicity and reasonable blood compatibility, which could reduce the risks associated with conventional materials. While these findings are promising, further in vivo studies are necessary to validate the efficacy and safety of these scaffolds in clinical settings. If proven effective, gelatin–carrageenan scaffolds may help address some of the limitations of conventional nasal packing materials and improve postoperative care outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Nigella sativa or commonly known as black seed or black cumin is one of the most ubiquitous complementary medicine. Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) of type 2 is defined by the balance between wound healing and tissue fibrosis, which is dependent to the state of inflammation. This systematic review is conducted to provide an overview regarding the reported effect of Nigella sativa and its bioactive compound on the type 2 EMT. Methods A search was done in EBSCOHOST, OVID and SCOPUS database to obtain potentially relevant articles that were published between 1823 and August 2019. This review includes studies that focus on the effect of Nigella sativa and its bioactive compound on the events related to type 2 EMT. Results A total of 1393 research articles were found to be potentially related to the effect of Nigella sativa and its bioactive compound, thymoquinone on Type 2 EMT. After screening was done, 22 research articles met inclusion criteria and were included in this review. Majority of the studies, reported better wound healing rate or significant prevention of tissue inflammation and organ fibrosis following Nigella sativa or thymoquinone treatments. In terms of wound healing, studies included reported progression of EMT related pathological changes after treatment with Nigella sativa or thymoquinone. Alternatively, in terms of fibrosis and inflammation, studies included reported reversal of pathological changes related to EMT after treatment with Nigella sativa or thymoquinone. Conclusion Through this review, Nigella sativa and thymoquinone have been associated with events in Type 2 EMT. They have been shown to promote wound healing, attenuate tissue inflammation, and prevent organ fibrosis via regulation of the EMT process.

Background: Rhinitis is a common worldwide problem that is still under-diagnosed and under-treated in many countries. Most epidemiological studies use only questionnaire surveys to gauge the severity of symptoms and lack objective diagnostic criteria to quantify the severity of symptoms such as nasal obstruction. The incidence of rhinitis was examined with the use of the Peak Nasal Inspiratory Flow (PNIF), the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test 22 (SNOT-22), and the visual analogue score (VAS) with the intention to determine the efficacy of PNIF as an objective diagnostic tool for rhinitis and to establish normal reference values for PNIF and SNOT-22 in a normal population. Materials and Methods: PNIF, SNOT-22, and VAS of 256 subjects with and without rhinitis from the general population were evaluated. Results: The incidence of rhinitis was 51% with PNIF, SNOT-22, and VAS scores being significantly better (p<0.01) in subjects without rhinitis compared to subjects with rhinitis. Median PNIF for the population with rhinitis and without was 90 L/minute and 110 L/minute, respectively. Median SNOT-22 for the population with rhinitis and without was 41 over 110 and 4 over 110, respectively. Fifty-three percent of subjects with rhinitis were unaware of the severity of their symptoms until they completed the assessments. At a PNIF cut-off point of 95 L or less per minute, there was a moderate to good diagnostic potential for rhinitis. At a SNOT-22 cut-off point of 21 or less over 110, there was an excellent diagnostic potential for rhinitis. When PNIF and SNOT-22 are used together, the diagnostic accuracy for rhinitis is 97.6%. Conclusion: The incidence of rhinitis is high and it is an unrecognized problem. PNIF is a cheap, simple, and useful objective diagnostic tool to assess changes in nasal patency and to discriminate between patients with moderate to severe rhinitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
