The nests of social insects often harbor a rich fauna of intruders, known as inquilines. Close relatedness between the host and the inquiline prevails due to potential genetic predispositions but how phylogenetically distant inquilines adapt to their hosts remains unclear. Here, we analyzed the genome of the wingless and blind bee louse flyBraula coeca, an inquiline of the Western honey beeApis mellifera. We found that unlike many parasites, such as the human louse, the bee louse genome did not show significant erosion or strict reliance on an endosymbiont, likely due to a relatively recent age of inquilinism. However, a strikingly parallel evolution in a set of gene families was observed between the honey bee and the bee louse. Convergences included genes potentially involved in metabolism and immunity, and the loss of nearly all bitter-tasting gustatory receptors in agreement with life in a protective hive and a major diet of honey, pollens, and beeswax. Vision-related and odorant receptor genes also exhibited rapid losses. Only genes whose orthologs in the closely relatedDrosophila melanogasterrespond to components of the honey bee alarm pheromones or floral aroma were retained, whereas the losses included orthologous receptors responsive to the anti-ovarian honey bee queen pheromone. These results establish a new model for the study of major morphological and neuroethological transitions and indicate that deep genetic convergences between phylogenetically distant organisms can underlie the evolution of social inquilinism.

During the early stages of local adaptation and speciation, genetic differences tend to accumulate at certain regions of the genome leading to the formation of genomic islands of divergence (GIDs). This pattern may be due to selection and/or difference in the rate of recombination. Here, we investigate the possible causes of GIDs inDrosophila yakuba mayottensis, and reconfirm using field collection its association with toxic noni (Morinda citrifolia) fruits on the Mayotte island. Population genomics revealed lack of genetic structure on the island and identified 20 GIDs distinguishingD. y. mayottensisfrom generalist mainland populations ofD. y. yakuba. The GIDs were enriched with gene families involved in the metabolism of lipids, sugars, peptides and xenobiotics, suggesting a role in host shift. We assembled a new genome forD. y. mayottensisand identified five novel chromosomal inversions. Twelve GIDs (∼72% of outlier windows) fell close to or within subspecies-specific inversions. However, three GIDs were in collinear, high recombining regions indicating strong signal of hard selective sweeps. UnlikeD. y. mayottensis,D. sechellia, the only other noni-specialist, is homosequential with its generalist relatives. Thus, both selection and rearrangements shape GIDs and striking convergences can occur between species with distinct genomic architectures.

The model organism Drosophila melanogaster has become a focal system for investigations of rapidly evolving genital morphology as well as the development and functions of insect reproductive structures. To follow up on a previous paper outlining unifying terminology for the structures of the male terminalia in this species, we offer here a detailed description of the female terminalia of D. melanogaster. Informative diagrams and micrographs are presented to provide a comprehensive overview of the external and internal reproductive structures of females. We propose a collection of terms and definitions to standardize the terminology associated with the female terminalia in D. melanogaster and we provide a correspondence table with the terms previously used. Unifying terminology for both males and females in this species will help to facilitate communication between various disciplines, as well as aid in synthesizing research across publications within a discipline that has historically focused principally on male features. Our efforts to refine and standardize the terminology should expand the utility of this important model system for addressing questions related to the development and evolution of animal genitalia, and morphology in general.

Devido ao aumento no transporte global nas últimas décadas, espécies que ocorrem em ambientes alterados pelo homem estão ampliando sua distribuição geográfica. Consequentemente, espécies endêmicas estão em declínio ou em extinção. Aqui, relatamos a primeira ocorrência nas Américas da espécie Afrotropical Zaprionus tuberculatus Malloch. Esta espécie foi reconhecida como invasora pelo Invasive Species Compendium, e argumentamos que provavelmente causará impacto no bioma Cerrado, um hotspot de biodiversidade onde comunidades de drosofilídeos têm sido monitoradas desde 1999. Zaprionus tuberculatus foi coletado pela primeira vez em janeiro de 2020, com baixa abundância, em parques urbanos localizados em Brasília. Em dezembro de 2020, foi encontrado em uma área preservada a aproximadamente 200 km dos parques urbanos. De janeiro a março de 2021, encontramos a espécie em sete parques urbanos de Brasília e três reservas naturais (unidades de conservação) localizadas no entorno da cidade. A abundância relativa da espécie aumentou de 0,9% em 2020 (n = 11.244 drosofilídeos) para 17% em 2021 (n = 6.002 drosofilídeos). Esta é uma oportunidade rara para monitorar um evento de invasão recente em uma área bem estudada. Com base no impacto de Z. indianus Gupta, que invadiu o bioma Cerrado em 1999 e permaneceu como espécie dominante durante as estações chuvosas, tememos que essa nova chegada reduza a diversidade de drosofilídeos nos Neotrópicos. Due to the increase in global transport in recent decades, species that flourish in human-altered environments are widening their geographical distribution. Consequently, endemic species are either declining or going to extinction. Here, we report the first occurrence of the Afrotropical fly Zaprionus tuberculatus Malloch in the Americas. This species has been recognized as invasive by the Invasive Species Compendium, and we argue that it will probably impact drosophilid communities. Our study was conducted on the natural and urban environments of the Brazilian Savanna, a biodiversity hotspot where drosophilid communities have been monitored since 1999. Z. tuberculatus was first collected in January 2020, at low abundances, in urban parks located in Brasília. In December 2020, we recorded it in a preserved area approximately 200 km away from the urban parks. From January to March 2021, we found the species in seven urban parks in Brasília and three natural reserves (conservation units) located around the city. The species’ relative abundance increased from 0.9% in 2020 (n = 11,244 drosophilids) to 17% in 2021 (n = 6,002 drosophilids). This is a rare opportunity to monitor a recent invasion event in a well-studied area. Based on the impact of Z. indianus Gupta, which invaded the Brazilian Savanna in 1999 and remained the dominant species during the rainy seasons, we fear that this new arrival will reduce the diversity of drosophilids in the Neotropics.

Quantitative genetics aims at untangling the genetic and environmental effects on phenotypic variation. Trait heritability, which summarizes the relative importance of genetic effects, is estimated at the intraspecific level, but theory predicts that heritability could influence long-term evolution of quantitative traits. The phylogenetic signal concept bears resemblance to heritability and it has often been called species-level heritability. Under certain conditions, such as trait neutrality or contribution to phylogenesis, within-species heritability and between-species phylogenetic signal should be correlated. Here, we investigate the potential relationship between these two concepts by examining the evolution of multiple morphological traits for which heritability has been estimated in Drosophila melanogaster. Specifically, we analysed 42 morphological traits in both sexes on a phylogeny inferred from 22 nuclear genes for nine species of the melanogaster subgroup. We used Pagel’s λ as a measurement of phylogenetic signal because it is the least influenced by the number of analysed taxa. Pigmentation traits showed the strongest concordance with the phylogeny, but no correlation was found between phylogenetic signal and heritability estimates mined from the literature. We obtained data for multiple climatic variables inferred from the geographical distribution of each species. Phylogenetic regression of quantitative traits on climatic variables showed a significantly positive correlation with heritability. Convergent selection, the response to which depends on the trait heritability, may have led to the null association between phylogenetic signal and heritability for morphological traits in Drosophila. We discuss the possible causes of discrepancy between both statistics and caution against their confusion in evolutionary biology.

In Drosophila, comparisons of the thermal plasticity of pigmentation across serially homologous abdominal segments have been conducted in two species, namely Drosophila melanogaster and D. kikkawai. Pigmentation variation has different genetic architecture in the two species, being oligogenic in the former and monogenic in the later. Here, we analyze the thermal plasticity of abdominal pigmentation in a third species, D. erecta, which is phylogenetically close to D. melanogaster but like D. kikkawai has a monogenic basis for pigmentation variation. However, the underlying locus differs between D. erecta and D. kikkawai, being the X-linked melanin-synthesis gene tan in the former and the autosomal transcription factor pdm3 in the later. We found that in spite of a low overall plasticity in monogenic species compared to D. melanogaster, the two monogenic species showed divergent plasticity patterns in respect to the response to temperature and to the degree of dominance in heterozygotes. Those results provide new insights on the dependence of the degree of plasticity on the genetic architecture as well as on the extent of phenotypic convergence.

To date, the species Drosophila sturtevanti, D. magalhaesi, D. milleri and D. dacunhai, belonging to the sturtevanti subgroup of the Neotropical saltans species group, are identified mainly by the aedeagus morphology, but also present some differences in spot coloration and patterning of the female sixth tergite and in the shape and size of the spermathecae, parallel to a pattern of reproductive isolation. In the present study, we describe a novel saltans group species from French Guiana belonging to the sturtevanti subgroup. Our species designation is based on an integrative approach covering (i) aedeagi and spermathecae morphology by scanning electron microscopy, (ii) analysis of female sixth-Tergite color, (iii) morphometrical analysis of aedeagi and wings, (iv) analysis of partial sequence of the COI, COII and ND4 mitochondrial genes as well as (v) intercrosses for analysis of reproductive isolation. The comparative analysis of the results on these markers with those of D. sturtevanti, D. milleri and D. dacunhai supports that this line belongs to a new species of the sturtevanti subgroup that we name Drosophila lehrmanae sp. nov. in honor of Prof. Lee Ehrmańs 85th birthday. The genitalia present some of the most rapidly evolving anatomical structures in the animal kingdom, possessing a variety of parts that can distinguish recently diverged species. In the Drosophila melanogaster group, the phallus is adorned with several processes, pointed outgrowths, that are similar in size and shape between species. However, the complex three-dimensional nature of the phallus can obscure the exact connection points of each process. Previous descriptions based upon adult morphology have primarily assigned phallic processes by their approximate positions in the phallus and have remained largely agnostic regarding their homology relationships. In the absence of clearly identified homology, it can be challenging to model when each structure first evolved. Here, we employ a comparative developmental analysis of these processes in eight members of the melanogaster species group to precisely identify the tissue from which each process forms. Our results indicate that adult phallic processes arise from three pupal primordia in all species. We found that in some cases the same primordia generate homologous structures whereas in other cases, different primordia produce phenotypically similar but remarkably non-homologous structures. This suggests that the same gene regulatory network may have been redeployed to different primordia to induce phenotypically similar traits. Our results highlight how traits diversify and can be redeployed, even at short evolutionary scales.Research HighlightBy incorporating developmental analysis, we find that genital structures previously identified as homologs are novel structures. This highlights how developmental analysis can help resolve contentious claims of homology.

International audience; Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura, 1931) is an Asian pest of grapes and other soft fruits that has invaded North America and Europe during the last decade. Here we report its recent occurrence in two islands of the Comoros archipelago in the Mozambique Channel, namely Mayotte and Ngazidja (Grande Comore), in April 2017 and November 2018, respectively. We also document its absence from other African islands of the Mozambique Channel and the Western Indian Ocean including Mayotte until 2013. Drosophila ashburneri Tsacas, 1984 is the only member of the suzukii species subgroup known from the Comoros, but it is morphologically distinct and likely distantly related to D. suzukii. Drosophila suzukii has likely been recently introduced to the Comoros archipelago, perhaps from La Réunion island where it first appeared in November 2013. In all these tropical islands, D. suzukii was found in high-altitude habitats in agreement with its adaptation to cold environments. These results suggest the high susceptibility of highlands in Eastern and Southern Africa to be infested by this pest in a near future.

Unraveling the genetic architecture of adaptive phenotypic divergence is a fundamental quest in evolutionary biology. In Drosophila melanogaster, high-altitude melanism has evolved in separate mountain ranges in sub-Saharan Africa, potentially as an adaptation to UV intensity. We investigated the genetic basis of this melanism in three populations using a new bulk segregant analysis mapping method. We identified 19 distinct QTL regions from nine mapping crosses, with several QTL peaks overlapping between two or all populations, and yet different crosses involving the same melanic population commonly yielded distinct QTL. The strongest QTL often overlapped well-known pigmentation genes, but we typically did not find wide signals of genetic differentiation (FST) between lightly and darkly pigmented populations at these genes. Instead, we found small numbers of highly differentiated SNPs at the probable causative genes. A simulation analysis showed that these patterns of polymorphism were consistent with selection on standing genetic variation. Overall, our results suggest that, even for potentially simpler traits like pigmentation, the complexity of adaptive trait evolution poses important challenges for QTL mapping and population genetic analysis.

Systematists and geneticists study biological diversity, but they use different approaches that rarely intersect. A very common pattern that is of interest for both researchers is the rapid evolution of genitalia, a trait of significant taxonomic utility in several sexually reproducing animal clades. The idea that both male and female genitalia are species-specific and play a role in reproductive isolation has long been controversial but has recently gained a renewed interest by speciation and developmental geneticists. Here, I highlight six unresolved questions in genitalia coevolution and I argue that systematists, with their well training in comparative morphology, usage of large and geographically diverse collections, and ability to apply molecular genetics techniques, can make important contributions. Such an extension of systematics into the speciation and developmental genetics realms is a promising opportunity to expand “integrative taxonomy” comparisons between DNA and morphology into more explanatory relationships between the two sources of taxonomic data.

Recurrent specialization on similar host plants offers a unique opportunity to unravel the evolutionary and genetic mechanisms underlying dietary shifts. Recent studies have focused on ecological races belonging to the same species, but it is hard in many cases to untangle the role of adaptive introgression versus distinct mutations in facilitating recurrent evolution. We discovered on the island of Mayotte a population of the generalist fly Drosophila yakuba that is strictly associated with noni (Morinda citrifolia). This case strongly resembles Drosophila sechellia, a genetically isolated insular relative of D. yakuba whose intensely studied specialization on toxic noni fruits has always been considered a unique event in insect evolution. Experiments revealed that unlike mainland D. yakuba strains, Mayotte flies showed strong olfactory attraction and significant toxin tolerance to noni. Island females strongly discriminated against mainland males, suggesting that dietary adaptation has been accompanied by partial reproductive isolation. Population genomic analysis indicated a recent colonization (∼29 kya), at a time when year-round noni fruits may have presented a predictable resource on the small island, with ongoing migration after colonization. This relatively recent time scale allowed us to search for putatively adaptive loci based on genetic variation. Strong signals of genetic differentiation were found for several detoxification genes, including a major toxin tolerance locus in D. sechellia. Our results suggest that recurrent evolution on a toxic resource can involve similar historical events and common genetic bases, and they establish an important genetic system for the study of early stages of ecological specialization and speciation.

International audience; Understanding how organisms adapt to environmental changes is a major question in evolution and ecology. In particular, the role of ancestral variation in rapid adaptation remains unclear because its trace on genetic variation, known as soft selective sweep, is often hardly recognizable from genome-wide selection scans. Here, we investigate the evolution of chemosensory genes in Drosophila yakuba mayottensis, a specialist subspecies on toxic noni (Morinda citrifolia) fruits on the island of Mayotte. We combine population genomics analyses and behavioral assays to evaluate the level of divergence in chemosensory genes and perception of noni chemicals between specialist and generalist subspecies of D. yakuba. We identify a signal of soft selective sweep on a handful of genes, with the most diverging ones involving a cluster of gustatory receptors expressed in bitter-sensing neurons. Our results highlight the potential role of ancestral genetic variation in promoting host plant specialization in herbivorous insects and identify a number of candidate genes underlying behavioral adaptation.

Recently, permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are advised to be utilized in many applications. The basic direct torque control (DTC) configuration that incorporates Hysteresis controllers (HCs) has been evolved by researchers through replacing the HCs by anther more efficient controllers and considered recently as the best competitor for numerous motors drives. This paper presents such a modern approach for the speed control applied on the standard configuration of space-vector pulse-width modulated (SVPWM) DTC of PMSMs that incorporates PID controllers for both outer speed control loop and inner torque (T) and flux $(\boldsymbol{\psi})$ control loops where all control parameters of these controllers are well-tuned using the Cuckoo Search Optimization (CSO) algorithm. The system is tested at no load and with a step change in load. MATLAB-SIMULINK is used to perform the simulation and dSPACE DS1202 is used for the real time implementation of the overall system. A comparison between practical and simulation indicates a correspondence between the both results with a very rapid dynamic response and the system achieves the steady state (SS.) in a very short time. Also it shows that both the SS. and dynamic performances are improved by applying of the CSO algorithm.

Recently, direct torque control (DTC) is advised as a control strategy to be used in motors drives. Latest developments in artificial intelligence based control have brought in to focus a possibility of optimizing all the control parameters. In this research work a Fuzzy Logic (FL) speed controller is used as the outer control loop through a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) DTC where the inner control loops are the flux and torque controllers. All controllers' parameters of both inner and outer loops are well-optimized using Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm. For the real time implementation of the overall system, dSPACE DS1202 is used. and MATLAB-SIMULINK is used to perform the simulation model to offer simulation of dynamic and steady state response. For both practical work and simulation, the system is tested at different operating conditions. A comparison between practical and simulation is performed and shows a good agreement between experimental and simulation results with high dynamic performance and steady state achievement in short time.

The mutation alters a binding site for the Hox protein Abdominal-B in the developing genitalia, leading to bristle loss, and for another factor in the developing leg, leading to bristle gain. Summary. The Indian Ocean Islands are a most interesting region for evolutionary studies of terrestrial organisms and, among insects, the Drosophilidae family occupies a privileged position. The Comoros archipelago was, up to now, the least explored place among all the islands. We present here the results of a collection on one of the four main islands, Mayotte. From 4500 collected flies, 25 species were distinguished. The biology, ecology and biogeography of each species are discussed. Considering the extant known species from all islands, five evolutionary scenarios are proposed, ranging from the invasive, cosmopolitan, man-transported species to endemic species restricted to a single island. Some species raise a puzzling problem: despite having a very narrow and specialised ecological niche, they are broadly distributed on most islands and also on the African mainland.

Molecular sequences now overwhelm morphology in phylogenetic inference. Nonetheless, most molecular studies are conducted on a limited number of taxa, as DNA rarely can be analysed from old museum types or fossils. During the last 20 years, more than 150 molecular studies have challenged the current phylogenetic classification of the family Drosophilidae Rondani based on morphological characters. Most studies concerned a single genus, Drosophila Fallen, and included only few representative species from 17 out of the 78 genera of the family. Therefore, these molecular studies were unable to provide an alternative classification scheme. A supermatrix analysis of seven nuclear and one mitochondrial genes (8248 bp) for 33 genera was conducted using outgroups from one calyptrate and four ephydroid families. The Bayesian phylogeny was consistent with previous molecular studies including whole genome sequences and divided the Drosophilidae into four monophyletic clades. Morphological characters, mostly male genitalia, then were compared thoroughly between the four clades and homologous character states were identified. These states were then checked for 70 genera and a revised phylogenetic, family-group classification for the Drosophilidae is proposed. Two genera –Cladochaeta Coquillett and Diathoneura Duda – of the tribe Cladochaetini Grimaldi are transferred to the family Ephydridae. The Drosophilidae is divided into two subfamilies: Steganinae Hendel (30 genera) and Drosophilinae Rondani (43 genera). A further two genera, Apacrochaeta Duda and Sphyrnoceps de Meijere, are incertae sedis, and Palmophila Grimaldi, is synonymized with Drosophilasyn.n. The Drosophilinae is subdivided into two tribes: the re-elevated Colocasiomyini Okada (nine genera) and Drosophilini Okada. The paraphyly of the genus Drosophila was not resolved to avoid affecting the binomina of important laboratory model species; however, its subgeneric classification was revised in light of molecular and morphological data. Three subgenera, namely Chusqueophila Brncic, Phloridosa Sturtevant and Psilodorha Okada, were synonymized with the subgenus Drosophila (Drosophila) Fallen syns.n. Among the 45 species groups and 5 species complexes of Drosophila (Drosophila), 22 groups and 1 complex were transferred to the subgenus Drosophila (Siphlodora) Patterson & Mainland and 6 groups, 2 species subgroups and 3 complexes are considered incertae sedis within the genus Drosophila. Different morphological characters provide different signals at different phylogenetic scales: thoracic characters (wing venation and presternal shape) discriminate families; grasping and erection-related characters discriminate subfamilies to tribes; whereas phallic paraphyses, i.e. auxiliary intromittent organs, discriminate genera and Drosophila subgenera. The study shows the necessity of analysing morphological characters within a molecular phylogenetic framework to translate molecular phylogenies into taxonomically-comprehensive classifications.

A full understanding of how ecological factors drive the fixation of genetic changes during speciation is obscured by the lack of appropriate models with clear natural history and powerful genetic toolkits. In a recent study, we described an early stage of ecological speciation in a population of the generalist species Drosophila yakuba (melanogaster subgroup) on the island of Mayotte (Indian Ocean). On this island, flies are strongly associated with the toxic fruits of noni (Morinda citrifolia) and show a partial degree of pre-zygotic reproductive isolation. Here, I mine the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes and provide a full morphological description of this population. Only 29 nuclear sites (< 4 × 10(−7) of the genome) are fixed in this population and absent from 3 mainland populations and the closest relative D. santomea, but no mitochondrial or morphological character distinguish Mayotte flies from the mainland. This result indicates that physiological and behavioral traits may evolve faster than morphology at the early stages of speciation. Based on these differences, the Mayotte population is designated as a new subspecies, Drosophila yakuba mayottensis subsp. nov., and its strong potential in understanding the genetics of speciation and plant-insect interactions is discussed.

Unraveling the genetic architecture of adaptive phenotypic divergence is a fundamental quest in evolutionary biology. InDrosophila melanogaster,high-altitude melanism has evolved in separate mountain ranges in sub-Saharan Africa, potentially as an adaptation to UV intensity. We investigated the genetic basis of this melanism in three populations using a new bulk segregant analysis mapping method. Although hundreds of genes are known to affect cuticular pigmentation inD. melanogaster,we identified only 19 distinct QTLs from 9 mapping crosses, with several QTL peaks being shared among two or all populations. Surprisingly, we did not find wide signals of genetic differentiation (Fst) between lightly and darkly pigmented populations at these QTLs, in spite of the pronounced phenotypic difference in pigmentation. Instead, we found small numbers of highly differentiated SNPs at the probable causative genes. A simulation analysis showed that these patterns of polymorphism are consistent with selection on standing genetic variation (leading to “soft sweeps“). Our results thus support a role for oligogenic selection on standing genetic variation in driving parallel ecological adaptation.

Sex-limited polymorphisms are an intriguing form of sexual dimorphism that offer unique opportunities to reconstruct the evolutionary changes that decouple male and female traits encoded by a shared genome. We investigated the genetic basis of a Mendelian female-limited color dimorphism (FLCD) that segregates in natural populations of more than 20 species of the Drosophila montium subgroup. In these species, females have alternative abdominal color morphs, light and dark, whereas males have only one color morph in each species. A comprehensive molecular phylogeny of the montium subgroup supports multiple origins of FLCD. Despite this, we mapped FLCD to the same locus in four distantly related species-the transcription factor POU domain motif3 (pdm3), which acts as a repressor of abdominal pigmentation in D.melanogaster. In D.serrata, FLCD maps to a structural variant in the first intron of pdm3; however, this variant is not found in the three other species-D.kikkawai, D.leontia, and D.burlai-and sequence analysis strongly suggests the pdm3 alleles responsible for FLCD originated independently at least three times. We propose that cis-regulatory changes in pdm3 form sexually dimorphic and monomorphic alleles that segregate within species and are preserved, at least in one species, by structural variation. Surprisingly, pdm3 has not been implicated in the evolution of sex-specific pigmentation outside the montium subgroup, suggesting that the genetic paths to sexual dimorphism may be constrained within a clade but variable across clades.

International audience; The last few decades have seen a growing number of species invasions globally, including many insect species. In drosophilids, there are several examples of successful invasions, i.e. Zaprionus indianus and Drosophila subobscura some decades ago, but the most recent and prominent example is the invasion of Europe and North America by the pest species, Drosophila suzukii. During the invasive process, species often encounter diverse environmental conditions that they must respond to, either through rapid genetic adaptive shifts or phenotypic plasticity, or by some combination of both. Consequently, invasive species constitute powerful models for investigating various questions related to the adaptive processes that underpin successful invasions. In this paper, we highlight how Drosophila have been and remain a valuable model group for understanding these underlying adaptive processes, and how they enable insight into key questions in invasion biology, including how quickly adaptive responses can occur when species are faced with new environmental conditions.

International audience; Thirteen drosophilid species belonging to seven genera and two subfamilies are reported from three coral islands (namely Europa, Juan de Nova and Glorioso) that belong to the Scattered Islands in the Indian Ocean. Five species are cosmopolitan and five are African. Three are endemic to the insular Western Indian Ocean, including a presumably new Scaptodrosophila species. On the island of Juan de Nova, most captured flies had pollinia attached to the bases of their proboscis. DNA analysis using the rbcl gene revealed that these pollinia belong to the genus Leptadenia (Apocynaceae), of which a single species L. madagascariensis, endemic in Madagascar and Comoros, is present in this island. This is the first reported association between this plant and drosophilids.

Thirty isofemale lines collected in three different years from the same wild French population were grown at seven different temperatures (12-31 °C). Two linear measures, wing and thorax length, were taken on 10 females and 10 males of each line at each temperature, also enabling the calculation of the wing/thorax (W/T) ratio, a shape index related to wing loading. Genetic correlations were calculated using family means. The W-T correlation was independent of temperature and on average, 0.75. For each line, characteristic values of the temperature reaction norm were calculated, i.e. maximum value, temperature of maximum value and curvature. Significant negative correlations were found between curvature and maximum value or temperature of maximum value. Sexual dimorphism was analysed by considering either the correlation between sexes or the female/male ratio. Female-male correlation was on average 0.75 at the within line, within temperature level but increased up to 0.90 when all temperatures were averaged for each line. The female-male ratio was genetically variable among lines but without any temperature effect. For the female/male ratio, heritability (intraclass correlation) was about 0.20 and evolvability (genetic coefficient of variation) close to 1. Although significant, these values are much less than for the traits themselves. Phenotypic plasticity of sexual dimorphism revealed very similar reaction norms for wing and thorax length, i.e. a monotonically increasing sigmoid curve from about 1.11 up to 1.17. This shows that the males are more sensitive to a thermal increase than females. In contrast, the W/T ratio was almost identical in both sexes, with only a very slight temperature effect.

Understanding the evolutionary potential of morphological evolution is still a major problem in evolutionary biology. In this study, we tried to quantify the amount of variation of different traits among species of a Drosophila clade reared under standard conditions. Nineteen different traits have been measured on nine species of the same clade, the Neotropical saltans group of Drosophila. Measured traits can be distributed into five categories: size-traits (wing and thorax), shape indices (ratios among the size traits), number of sternopleural bristles on the thorax, number of abdominal bristles on successive sternites, and dorsal pigmentation of abdomen. All species are of medium size with a generally dark pigmentation. A remarkable feature is the presence of numerous bristles on the 6th sternite of the males, while this segment is bare in other Drosophila species. A multivariate analysis revealed that it was possible to discriminate all the investigated species by using the complete set of measured traits. For each trait, phenotypic variability was investigated at the within- and between-species levels. As a rule, the interspecific coefficient of variation (CV) was much greater than the within species CV, and it is proposed to call it realized evolvability. All possible correlations were calculated between traits across species, providing many unexpected results. Size traits were highly correlated among them, but not correlated with shape indices. Abdominal traits (bristles and pigmentation) were correlated, but often in opposite directions, with thoracic shape indices. Tergite pigmentation was negatively correlated with bristle number on sternite. For the moment, most of the correlations cannot be explained by developmental processes or parallel selective pressures. Nonetheless, mapping the evolution of the two characters on a molecular phylogeny of the studied species revealed two opposite phylogenetic trends for abdominal pigmentation and setation, respectively. Our data suggest a need for similar studies in other well-defined Drosophila clades. Resume Comprendre le potentiel evolutif des caracteres morphologiques constitue un probleme majeur de la biologie de l’evolution. Dans cet article, nous essayons de quantifier la variation de differents caracteres entre les especes d’un clade de Drosophilaelevees dans les conditions standard du laboratoire. Dix neuf traits differents ont ete mesures sur 9 especes appartenant au meme clade, le groupe saltans de Drosophila. Les caracteres mesures peuvent etre repartis en cinq categories: des caracteres de taille (aile et thorax) des indices de forme (rapports entre les caracteres de taille); le nombre de soies sternopleurales sur le thorax, le nombre des sois abdominales sur le sternites successifs et finalement la pigmentation des tergites. Toutes les especes sont de taille moyenne avec une pigmentation generale sombre. Une caracteristique remarquable est la presence de nombreuses soies sur le 6eme sternite des mâles, alors que ce segment est completement nu chez les autres especes de Drosophila. Une analyse multivariee a montre qu’il etait possible de discriminer toutes les especes etudiees en utilisant l’ensemble des caracteres mesures. Pour chaque trait, la variabilite phenotypique a eteetudiee aux niveaux intra et interspecifique. En regle generale, le coefficient de variation (CV) interspecifique etait beaucoup plus grand que le CV intraspecifique, et il est propose de l’appeler evolvabilite realisee. Toutes les correlations possibles entre les differents caracteres des especes ont ete calculees, conduisant souvent a des resultats inattendus. Les caracteres de taille sont fortement correles entre eux, mais non avec les indices de forme. Les caracteres de l’abdomen (soies et pigmentation) sont correles, mais souvent de facon opposee, avec les indices de forme. La pigmentation des tergites est negativement correlee avec le nombre des soies sur les sternites. Pour le moment, il ne semble pas possible d’explique la plupart des correlations par des processus de developpement ou bien par des pressions selectives paralleles. Cependant, la comparaison de deux caracteres avec le phylogenie moleculaire a revele des tendances phylogenetiques opposees concernant la pigmentation et la setation de abdomen. Ces resultats suggerent la necessite d’etudes comparatives similaires dans d’autres clades bien definis de Drosophila.

The phylogenetic information content of different developmental stages is a long-standing issue in the study of development and evolution. We performed phylogenetic analyses of 51 body segmentation genes in 12 species of Drosophila in order to investigate the impact of the mode of evolution of development on phylogeny inference. Previous studies of these genes in Drosophila using pairwise phenetic comparisons at the species group level revealed the presence of an "hourglass model" (HG), wherein mid-embryonic stages are the most evolutionarily constrained. We utilized two character-based approaches: taxonomic congruence using the relative consensus fork index (RCFI), in which phylogenies are inferred from each gene separately and compared with a total evidence tree (TET), and partitioned simultaneous analysis using several indices such as branch support (BS) and localized incongruence length difference (LILD) test. We also proposed a new index, the recapitulatory index (R), which divides the number of synapomorphies on the total number of informative characters in a data set. Polynomial adjustment of both BS and R indices showed strong support for the hourglass model regardless of the taxonomic level (species subgroup vs. subgenera), showing less phylogenetic information content for mid-developmental stages (mainly the zygotic segment polarity stage). Significant LILD scores were randomly distributed among developmental stages revealing the absence of differential selective constraints, but were significantly related to chromosomal location showing physical (linkage) impact on phylogenetic incongruence. RCFI was the most sensitive measure to taxonomic level, having a convex parabola at the species subgroup level in support of the hourglass model and a concave parabola at the subgeneric level in support of the adaptive penetrance model. This time-dependent discrepancy of best fit developmental model parallels previous conflicting results from the vertebrates. Because of the quasi-phenetic nature of this index, we argue that the discrepancy is due to the evolutionary rate heterogeneity of developmental genes rather than to fundamental differences among organisms. We suggest that simultaneous character-based analyses give better macroevolutionary support to the hourglass model of the developmental constraints on genome evolution than pairwise phenetic comparisons.

The Zaprionus genus group comprises three drosophilid genera (Zaprionus, Phorticella and Samoaia) that are thought to be related to the Drosophila immigrans species group. We revised the phylogenetic relationships among the three genera and their placement within the subfamily Drosophilinae using one mitochondrial (COII) and one nuclear (Amyrel) gene. The Bayesian tree inferred from concatenated amino acid sequences of the two genes strongly suggests the polyphyly of the Zaprionus genus group and of each of the genera Zaprionus and Phorticella. Paraphyly of the D.immigrans species group was also shown here; the quadrilineata subgroup formed the sister clade to the genus Samoaia. These results suggest the necessity of taxonomic revisions for some relevant genera and species groups included within the genus Drosophila.

Zaprionus vittiger Coquillett is the type species of the genus Zaprionus Coquillett. However, the species is only known from five old museum specimens collected from South Africa and Malawi. It has often been confused with many other Zaprionus species, especially with Z. spinipilus Chassagnard & McEvey, a widespread species in Africa known from Madagascar, Malawi, Ethiopia and Cameroon. We have recently collected flies from the type localities of both species (South Africa and Madagascar, respectively). This has prompted us to test the taxonomic boundaries of these two nominal species using molecular (the mitochondrial COII and the nuclear Amyrel genes), chromosomal, morphological (internal and external genitalia), and reproductive isolation analyses. The results suggest Z. spinipilus to be a junior synonym to Z. vittiger.
