Abstract Background Knee osteoarthritis causes pain and disability in many people worldwide, for which no definitive treatment has yet been proposed. In this study, we investigated the safety and efficacy of placental mesenchymal stromal cells-derived extracellular vesicles in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Methods This triple-blind, randomized clinical trial included patients suffering from bilateral knee osteoarthritis with grade 2 or 3. The knees of each patient were randomized to intervention and control. For the intervention knee, 5 cc of placental mesenchymal stromal cells-derived extracellular vesicles were injected, and for the control knee, 5 cc of normal saline was injected. The patients’ symptoms were evaluated before the intervention and 2 and 6 months after the intervention using VAS, WOMAC questionnaire, and Lequesne index. MRI was performed before the intervention and 6 months after the intervention to evaluate retropatellar and tibiofemoral cartilage volume, medial and lateral meniscal disintegrity, ACL injury, and effusion-synovitis. Results 62 knees (31 patients) were enrolled in this study. There were 31 knees as intervention and 31 knees as control. Finally, the data of 58 knees (29 patients) were analyzed, including 28 women and 1 man. The mean age of the patients was 55.38 ± 6.07 years. No statistically significant difference was detected between the two groups in clinical outcomes (including VAS, WOMAC, and Lequesne scores) before treatment and 2 and 6 months after treatment. Also, no statistically significant difference was detected between the two groups in MRI findings before treatment and 6 months after treatment. No systemic complications or severe local reactions occurred in the patients. Conclusion A single intra-articular injection of placental mesenchymal stromal cells-derived extracellular vesicles (5 cc, 7 × 109 particles/cc) is safe, but does not improve clinical symptoms or MRI findings in knee osteoarthritis beyond placebo. Abstract Effective targeting and delivery of large amounts of medications into the cancer cells enhance their therapeutic efficacy through saturation of cellular defensive mechanisms, which is the most privilege of nano drug delivery systems (NDDS) compared to traditional approaches. Herein, we designed dual-pH/redox responsive DTX-loaded poly (β-amino ester) (PBAS) micelles decorated with a chimeric peptide and TA1 aptamer. In vitro and in vivo results demonstrated that the designed nanoplatform possessed an undetectable nature in the blood circulation, but after exposure to the tumor microenvironment (TME) of 4T1 breast cancer, it suddenly changed into dual targeting nanoparticles (NPs) (containing two ligands, SRL-2 and TA1 aptamer). The dual targeting NPs destruction in the high GSH and low pH conditions of the cancer cells led to amplified DTX release (around 70% at 24 h). The IC50 value of DTX-loaded MMP-9 sensitive heptapeptide/TA1 aptamer-modified poly (β-amino ester) (MST@PBAS) micelles and free DTX after 48 h of exposure was determined to be 1.5 µg/ml and 7.5 µg/ml, respectively. The nano-formulated DTX exhibited cytotoxicity that was 5-fold stronger than free DTX (Pvalue˂0.001). Cell cycle assay test results showed that following exposure to MST@PBAS micelles, a considerable rise in the sub G1 population (48%) suggested that apoptosis by cell cycle arrest had occurred. DTX-loaded MST@PBAS micelles revealed significantly higher (Pvalue ˂ 0.001) levels of early apoptosis (59.8%) than free DTX (44.7%). Interestingly, in vitro uptake studies showed a significantly higher TME accumulation of dual targeted NPs (6-fold) compared to single targeted NPs (Pvalue

Quercetin is a biologically active and widely used dietary flavonoid with robust antioxidant and chelating effects. However, due to its lesser solubility, it has poor bioavailability, which results in limited medicinal effects. This study synthesized quercetin–metal complexes, which enhanced the medicinal properties and bioavailability of quercetin. Quercetin–copper (Cu) complexes were fabricated by using copper sulfate and copper chloride in the Quercetin/Cu ratios of 1:2 and 1:1, respectively. Furthermore, Cu complexes with quercetin extracted from onion peels or standard quercetin were obtained. The current research also sought to assess the bioavailability as well as antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Spectrophotometry revealed that better complexes were prepared with a ratio of 1:2 as compared to 1:1. Copper chloride and copper sulfate showed no significant (p < 0.05) effects on complex formation. These metal complexes had a considerable impact on Bacillus subtilis (Gram+) as compared to Escherichia coli (Gram–). The pharmacokinetic parameters indicated that the oral bioavailability of quercetin–Cu(II) complexes was significantly enhanced as compared to pure quercetin. The results of this study suggested the successful formation of quercetin–metal complexes, which markedly increased the bio-availability of quercetin.

Inter-organizational knowledge sharing is crucial for the scientific, social, and economic development of societies. Knowledge sharing processes and systems are challenged not only by individual and organizational factors but also by social, technical, and political inter-organizational contributors. The majority of existing researches have focused on situations such as interactive supply chains, virtual organizations, and multinational organizations, so that it can be said that Inter-organizational knowledge sharing is neglected in collaborative processes. This paper examines inter-organizational knowledge sharing in a collaborative project in which independent public organizations work together for providing social care for students. This research aims to investigate the impact of the variables of knowledge worker, peers, inter-organizational knowledge-sharing system, organization, and coalition on sharing knowledge in multiple inter-organizational relationships. This quantitative correlational study employed a 44-item questionnaire, which was distributed among the system users in Alborz province. The sample size was calculated using Cochran’s formula, and for sampling, proportional stratified sampling method was used. The SmartPLS3 software was used to develop a confirmatory factor analysis model and structural equations, while SPSS software was employed for descriptive statistical tests. In this study, the impact of the knowledge worker, peers, sharing system, organization, and coalition on knowledge sharing via interorganizational knowledge sharing systems was confirmed, among which the variables of the knowledge worker and peers exerted the greatest impact on knowledge sharing which shows the main priorities of managers to improve knowledge transfer functions in this system.

Background: SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of the COVID-19 pandemic, spreads through both direct and indirect pathways. Among the latter, surface contamination is a significant concern due to the virus’s prolonged viability on surfaces. There is ongoing discussion over the impact of environmental surface contamination, especially in light of the introduction of novel viral types. The present study aimed to examine the extent of environmental surface contamination across different hospital wards and evaluate the effectiveness of disinfectants in inactivating the virus. Methods: The samples were collected from critical areas in a hospital, both pre-disinfection (n = 40) and post-disinfection (n = 17), using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to detect SARS-CoV-2. Results: The findings indisputably confirm the presence of SARS-CoV-2 on swab samples from frequently-touched surfaces. Notably, 10 samples were virus-positive before disinfection, highlighting persistent viral contamination in vital hospital zones. Conclusion: This study underscores the critical role of environmental surface contamination in SARSCoV- 2 transmission, particularly in healthcare settings. Detecting the virus on frequently-handled surfaces underscores the urgent need for rigorous and frequent surface disinfection. Effective surface disinfection remains a rapid, straightforward, and practical strategy to mitigate virus transmission to healthcare workers and patients. These findings hold significant implications for infection control, particularly amid emerging virus variants. They emphasize the need to maintain stringent hygiene and disinfection practices within healthcare facilities to combat the spread of COVID-19.

Introduction: Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) following Liver Transplantation (LT) is associated with prolonged ICU and hospital stay, increased risk of chronic renal disease, and decreased graft survival. Intraoperative hypotension is a modifiable risk factor associated with postoperative AKI. We aimed to determine in which phase of LT hypotension has the strongest association with AKI: the anhepatic or neohepatic phase. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included adult patients undergoing LT between January 2010 and June 2022. Exclusion criteria were re-do or combined transplantations, preoperative dialysis, and early graft failure or death. Primary outcome was AKI as defined by KDIGO. Hypotension was Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) below predefined thresholds in minutes. Risk adjusted logistic regression analysis considered hypotension in 3 periods: the total procedure, anhepatic phase, and neohepatic phase. Results: Our cohort included 1153 patients. The median MELD-NA score was 19 (IQR 11–28), and 412 (35.9%) were living-related donations. AKI occurred in 544 patients (47.2%). The unadjusted model showed an association with AKI for MAP < 60 mmHg (OR = 1.011 [1.0, 1.022], p = 0.047) and MAP < 55 mmHg (OR = 1.023 [1.002, 1.047], p = 0.040) in the anhepatic phase, and for MAP < 60 mmHg (OR = 1.032 [1.01, 1.056], p = 0.006) in the neohepatic phase. The adjusted model did not reach significance in the subgroups but did in the total procedure: MAP < 60 mmHg (OR = 1.005 [1.002, 1.008], p < 0.001) and MAP < 55 mmHg (OR = 1.008 [1.003–1.013], p = 0.004). Conclusion: Intraoperative hypotension is independently associated with AKI following LT. This association is seen during the anhepatic phase. Maintaining MAP above 60 mmHg may improve kidney function after LT.

This work investigated the photochemical degradation of malachite green (MG), a cationic triphenylmethane dye used as a coloring agent, fungicide, and antiseptic. UV photolysis was ineffective in the removal of MG as only 12.35% degradation of MG (10 mg/L) was achieved after 60 min of irradiation. In contrast, 100.00% degradation of MG (10 mg/L) was observed after 60 min of irradiation in the presence of 10 mM H2O2 by UV/H2O2 at pH 6.0. Similarly, complete removal (100.00%) of MG was observed at 30 min of the reaction time by UV/H2O2/Fe2+ employing [MG]0 = 10 mg/L, [H2O2]0 = 10 mM, [Fe2+]0 = 2.5 mg/L, and [pH]0 = 3.0. For the UV/H2O2 process, the degradation efficiency was higher at pH 6.0 than at pH 3.0 as the kobs values were 0.0873 and 0.0690 min−1, respectively. However, UV/H2O2/Fe2+ showed higher reactivity at pH 3.0 than at pH 6.0. Chloride and nitrate ions slightly inhibited the removal efficiency of MG by both UV/H2O2 and UV/H2O2/Fe2+ processes. Moreover, three degradation products (DPs) of MG, (i) 4-dimethylamino-benzophenone (DABP), (ii) 4-amino-benzophenone (ABP), and (iii) 4-dimethylamino-phenol (DAP), were identified by GC-MS during the UV/H2O2 treatment. These DPs were found to demonstrate higher aquatic toxicity than the parent MG, suggesting that researchers should focus on the removal of target pollutants as well as their DPs. Nevertheless, the results of this study indicate that both UV/H2O2 and UV/H2O2/Fe2+ processes could be implemented to alleviate the harmful environmental impacts of dye and textile industries.

Background: Weight loss response to sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is variable and predicting the effectiveness of surgery is challenging and elusive. The aim of our study was to assess and quantify the association between eating control and weight loss outcomes and identify the control of eating (CoE) attributes during the early postoperative period that might predict good vs. poor response to SG at one year. Governments are an important buyer of goods and services, such a role caused the public procurement, to be recognized as an important policy tool at the disposal of the government to improve the capacity of domestic companies. Directing public procurement to achieve development goals is one of the most important innovation policies on the demand side, which enables governments to create new markets for technological and innovative companies and thereby improve their technological capabilities. The broadcasting industry, as the basic infrastructure of the Iran national media (IRIB), has been considered in this research due to its features such as rapid changes in technology, long life of manufactured products, small domestic market and the intangibility of the social impact of innovative domestic production activities. By adopting a qualitative approach, after reviewing the background of the research, the framework and questions of in-depth interviews were determined and interviews were conducted with fifteen experts in the broadcast industry. Based on the analysis of the content of the identified categories and the extraction of organizing categories and then comprehensive categories, it was found that creating demand and protecting the market, environmental factors and organizational level factors along with the innovation cycle are the most basic categories of using government procurement in promoting technology in this industry .Therefore, it is necessary to seriously consider at least the guarantee of purchase, the development of the domestic and international market by supporting exports, and amending the laws. Finally, Policy implications for promoting exports in the broadcast industry is highlighted.

Abstract Background Spasticity can significantly affect a patient’s quality of life, caregiver satisfaction, and the financial burden on the healthcare system. Baclofen is one of only a few options for treating spasticity. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of intrathecal baclofen (ITB) therapy on severe40.23 spasticity and motor function in patients with cerebral palsy. Methods We conducted a systematic review in PubMed, Scopus, Ovid, and the Cochrane Library in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. We included studies based on eligibility criteria that included desired participants (cerebral palsy patients with spasticity), interventions (intrathecal baclofen), and outcomes (the Ashworth scales and the Gross Motor Function Measure [GMFM]). The within-group Cohen’s d standardized mean differences (SMD) were analyzed using the random effect model. Results We screened 768 papers and included 19 in the severity of spasticity section and 6 in the motor function section. The pre-intervention average spasticity score (SD) was 3.2 (0.78), and the post-intervention average score (SD) was 1.9 (0.72), showing a 40.25% reduction. Abstract Although numerous studies have demonstrated the impact of microbiome manipulation on human health, research on the microbiome’s influence on female health remains relatively limited despite substantial disease burden. In light of this, we present a selected review of clinical trials and preclinical studies targeting both the vaginal and gut microbiomes for the prevention or treatment of various gynecologic conditions. Specifically, we explore studies that leverage microbiota transplants, probiotics, prebiotics, diet modifications, and engineered microbial strains. A healthy vaginal microbiome for females of reproductive age consists of lactic acid-producing bacteria predominantly of the Lactobacillus genus, which serves as a protective barrier against pathogens and maintains a balanced ecosystem. The gut microbiota’s production of short-chain fatty acids, metabolism of primary bile acids, and modulation of sex steroid levels have significant implications for the interplay between host and microbes throughout the body, ultimately impacting reproductive health. By harnessing interventions that modulate both the vaginal and gut microbiomes, it becomes possible to not only maintain homeostasis but also mitigate pathological conditions. While the field is still working toward making broad clinical recommendations, the current studies demonstrate that manipulating the microbiome holds great potential for addressing diverse gynecologic conditions. Lay summary Manipulating the microbiome has recently entered popular culture, with various diets thought to aid the microbes that live within us. These microbes live in different locations of our body and accordingly help us digest food, modulate our immune system, and influence reproductive health. The role of the microbes living in and influencing the female reproductive tract remains understudied despite known roles in common conditions such as vulvovaginal candidiasis (affecting 75% of females in their lifetime), bacterial vaginosis (25% of females in their lifetime), cervical HPV infection (80% of females in their lifetime), endometriosis (6–10% of females of reproductive age), and polycystic ovary syndrome (10–12% of females of reproductive age). Here, we review four different approaches used to manipulate the female reproductive tract and gastrointestinal system microbiomes: microbiota transplants, probiotics, prebiotics, and dietary interventions, and the use of engineered microbial strains. In doing so, we aim to stimulate discussion on new ways to understand and treat female reproductive health conditions.

Background: Gliomas, as Central Nervous System (CNS) tumors, are greatly common with 80% of malignancy. Treatment methods for gliomas, such as surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy depend on the grade, size, location, and the patient’s age. Objective: This study aimed to quantify glioma based on the radiomics analysis and classify its grade into High-grade Glioma (HGG) or Low-grade Glioma (LGG) by various machine-learning methods using contrast-enhanced brain Computerized Tomography (CT) scans. Material and Methods: This retrospective study involved acquiring and segmenting data, selecting and extracting features, classifying, analyzing, and evaluating classifiers. The study included a total of 62 patients (31 with LGG and 31 with HGG). The tumors were segmented by an experienced CT-scan technologist with 3D slicer software. A total of 14 shape features, 18 histogram-based features, and 75 texture-based features were computed. The Area Under the Curve (AUC) and Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (ROC) were used to evaluate and compare classification models. Results: A total of 13 out of 107 features were selected to differentiate between LGGs and HGGs and to perform various classifier algorithms with different cross-validations. The best classifier algorithm was linear-discriminant with 93.5% accuracy, 96.77% sensitivity, 90.3% specificity, and 0.98% AUC in the differentiation of LGGs and HGGs. Conclusion: The proposed method can identify LGG and HGG with 93.5% accuracy, 96.77% sensitivity, 90.3% specificity, and 0.98% AUC, leading to the best treatment for glioma patients by using CT scans based on radiomics analysis.

Abstract Aims Heart failure (HF) patients with anaemia tend to have a worse outcome, with increased hospitalization rates, decreased exercise tolerance, and higher mortality compared to those without anaemia. Limited research exists on the association between selenium deficiency and anaemia specifically in HF patients, despite previous findings of a correlation in different populations. The BIOSTAT‐CHF study demonstrated that higher selenium levels in HF patients were associated to a lower risk of anaemia and iron deficiency. This study investigates the relationship between selenoprotein P (SELENOP) concentrations, a major contributor and functional biomarker of selenium transport, and anaemia, Hb levels, and iron status in hospitalized HF patients. The metal cutting industry faces challenges in machining hard materials due to high forces and temperatures. This paper introduces bubble-bursting atomization minimum quantity lubrication (BBA-MQL), a novel MQL technique that generates fine biodegradable oil mists for cooling and lubrication. Although the initial results of BBA-MQL are promising, there has not been a comprehensive investigation into its use in machining hard materials, specifically tool steels. Therefore, this study focused on the applicability of BBA-MQL in face milling of AISI P20 + Ni tool steel in comparison with dry cutting and conventional MQL using commercial and vegetable oil. The machining tests were performed at three cutting speeds (50, 80, and 110 m/min), fixed cutting depth (0.2 mm), and feed rate (0.15 mm/tooth). The performance is evaluated by measuring the cutting force, surface quality, cutting temperature, and tool wear. It was found that BBA-MQL decreased cutting force and surface roughness considerably, with the average reductions being 23.2 % and 49.8 % compared with the conventional minimum quantity lubrication. The highest cutting speed of 110 m/min was preferred for achieving the lowest roughness value and cutting force when milling tool steel P20 + Ni. Furthermore, BBA-MQL with castor oil proved more effective compared to conventional MQL in reducing cutting force, showing improved surface finish, reduced cutting temperature, and delayed tool wear.

Background: Obesity is one the most prevalent diseases all around the world. Some studies have shown a relationship between obesity and the worsening of rheumatic disorders. Higher rates of surgical complications might also be seen among these patients. Methods: This retrospective-descriptive study was performed on 25 patients with rheumatic disease referred to Loghman Hakim Hospital (Tehran- Iran) and candidates for bariatric surgery (laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy) from 2018 to 2020. Duration of hospitalization after surgery and history of post-operation surgical and rheumatic complications were assessed. Patients were followed through 6 months after surgery. Results: The age (Mean±SD) of recruited patients was (38.4 ±10.0) years. The mean body mass index was 45.54 kg/m2 with the minimum and maximum values of 37.5 kg/m2 and 56.5 kg/m2. Among them, the prevalence of rheumatic disorders was rheumatoid arthritis 32%, psoriasis 28%, gout 16%, lupus erythematosus 8%, and other rheumatologic disorders 16%, respectively. One patient had a surgical complication that was a port site infection. One patient had a relapse of gout and other patients had remission and also, their therapeutic drugs were discontinued or reduced. Conclusion: Patients with rheumatic disorders revealed no higher surgical complication rate after bariatric surgery, and bariatric surgery helped disease remission among these patients.

Abstract Background Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) as a rare and heritable disorder with the infrequent genetic transmission of the condition is a catastrophic disorder of heterotopic ossification (HO) and a cause of extraskeletal bone formation in humans. Given the lack of effective treatment for this disease, the important point is to avoid aggravating factors such as bone biopsy, surgery, and intramuscular injection. Case presentation In this report, we present a 52-year-old female patient, Kurdish ethnic, suspected to FOP who had a surgical intervention on the second toe of the right foot, which subsequently, it caused further deterioration of the disease in the person including necrosis and amputation of the distal phalanx of the second toe. Conclusions Although, based on our investigation and the available scientific evidence, surgery may a cause for faster progression and worsening of the FOP disorder, but its proof requires further studies.

While the wind turbine industry has been primarily dominated by horizontal-axis wind turbines, the forefront of knowledge of these turbines has revealed significant challenges in various aspects, including manufacturing, structural design, cost, and maintenance. On the other hand, the advantages associated with Darrieus vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) demonstrate significant potential that can address the existing challenges of the wind turbine industry. Current work aims to investigate the practicality of this potential for the wind energy sector. To this end, the benefits of employing Darrieus turbines for domestic and industrial applications, isolated operation, and on/offshore windfarm applications have been explored. It is apparent that Darrieus VAWTs are better suited to a wide range of environments, whether they are deployed in isolation or integrated systems, and whether they are utilized on a small or large scale. Darrieus VAWTs are adaptable to urban unsteady variable wind, are less expensive on large scales, provide higher power density at the windfarm level, and provide stability for offshore platforms. Nevertheless, challenges remain in fully harnessing VAWT potential rooted in their complex aerodynamics. This serves as a primary challenge for VAWTs to address the challenges of the wind turbine industry in line with the 2050 roadmap.

The large-scale utilization of antibiotics has opened a separate chapter of pollution with the generation of reactive drug-resistant bacteria. To deal with this, in this work, different mass ratios of CoFe2O4/WO3 nanocomposites were prepared following an in situ growth method using the precursors of WO3 and CoFe2O4. The structure, morphology, and optical properties of the nanocomposite photocatalysts were scrutinized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-Vis DRS), photoluminescence spectrum (PL), etc. The experimental data signified that the loading of CoFe2O4 obviously changed the optical properties of WO3. The photocatalytic performance of CoFe2O4/WO3 composites was investigated by considering tetracycline as a potential pollutant. The outcome of the analyzed data exposed that the CoFe2O4/WO3 composite with a mass ratio of 5% had the best degradation performance for tetracycline eradication under the solar light, and a degradation efficiency of 77% was achieved in 20 min. The monitored degradation efficiency of the optimized photocatalyst was 45% higher compared with the degradation efficiency of 32% for pure WO3. Capturing experiments and tests revealed that hydroxyl radical (·OH) and hole (h+) were the primary eradicators of the target pollutant. This study demonstrates that a proper mass of CoFe2O4 can significantly push WO3 for enhanced eradication of waterborne pollutants.

Abstract Bioactive peptides are key molecules in health and medicine. Deep learning holds a big promise for the discovery and design of bioactive peptides. Yet, suitable experimental approaches are required to validate candidates in high throughput and at low cost. Here, we established a cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) pipeline for the rapid and inexpensive production of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) directly from DNA templates. To validate our platform, we used deep learning to design thousands of AMPs de novo. Using computational methods, we prioritized 500 candidates that we produced and screened with our CFPS pipeline. We identified 30 functional AMPs, which we characterized further through molecular dynamics simulations, antimicrobial activity and toxicity. Notably, six de novo-AMPs feature broad-spectrum activity against multidrug-resistant pathogens and do not develop bacterial resistance. Our work demonstrates the potential of CFPS for high throughput and low-cost production and testing of bioactive peptides within less than 24 h.

Abstract An association between high Galectin-4 (Gal-4) and prevalence of diabetes in subjects with heart failure (HF) has previously been reported. The purpose of this study was to confirm these findings, as well as to further investigate this association, in a Swedish HF population. In addition, a second aim was to explore Gal-4’s association with obesity and biomarkers of metabolism and heart failure. Gal-4 was measured using a proximity extension array technique in 324 hospitalized HF patients within the Swedish HeArt and bRain failure investigation trial cohort. Obesity was defined as BMI ≥ 30. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to explore associations between Gal-4 and diabetes/obesity, and linear regression models were used to explore the associations between Gal-4 and biomarkers. A total of 309 participants (29.1% female; mean age 74.8 years) provided complete data for the analysis of associations between Gal-4 and diabetes. Additionally, for the analysis of heart failure phenotype, complete data was available for 230 subjects. Gal-4 was positively associated with prevalent diabetes (OR 2.60; CI 95% 1.56–4.32). In multivariable models, Gal-4 levels were significantly associated with obesity, but only for subjects with diabetes (OR 2.48; 1.09–5.62). Additionally, Gal-4 demonstrated a significant association with the incretin Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), as well as with biomarkers of HF. In the stratified analyses, the association between Gal-4 and diabetes was prominent in patients with reduced ejection fraction (n = 160, OR 3.26; 95%CI 1.88–5.66), while it was not observed in those without (n = 70, 1.96 (0.75–5.10)). In this cross-sectional, observational study, higher Gal-4 levels in HF patients were associated with higher GIP levels. Further, increased levels of Gal-4 were associated with increased likelihood of diabetes, and obesity. This association was particularly pronounced in individuals with HF characterized by reduced ejection fraction. Additionally, Gal-4 levels were significantly elevated in heart failure patients with diabetes and obesity.

Background & Aims: Unsuitable management of municipal solid waste (MSW) is one of the main factors in environmental degradation, particularly in developing countries. This study aimed to analyze the quantitative and qualitative properties of MSW for energy recovery in the city of Mahabad, located in the West Azerbaijan Province, Iran. Materials & Methods: Sampling from MSW was taken during the four seasons in 2014. Quality and quantity analyses included chemical composition, moisture percentage, dry weight, ash percentage, and heat value, which were performed in the lab as per the American Society for Testing and Materials Method D 5231-92. The experience modeling was used to extract chemical composition and heat value. Results: The results showed that MSW was composed of 75% food waste, 12% ash, and 61% moisture. In the MSW organic fraction (C28.7H43.6O15.3N1S0,065), carbon/nitrogen and heat values were found at 28.7 and 2.1 × 104 Kj Kg-1, respectively. Also, in the MSW biodegradable organic fraction (C23.7H37.7O14.69N1S0.069), heat value and produced methane were calculated to be 10077 Kj Kg-1 and 207 liters (148 g), respectively. Any carbon dioxide added to the atmosphere will hang around for a long time, between 200 and 200 ton day-1, which contributes to trapping heat and warming the atmosphere. Conclusion: This study shows energy recovery from MSW is a good option, due to the high heat value. However, it is not an eco-friendly method as it will produce more greenhouse and poison gases and needs control systems.

Abstract Ovarian cancer (OC) incidence and mortality rates continue to escalate globally. Early detection of OC is challenging due to extensive metastases and the ambiguity of biomarkers in advanced High-Grade Primary Tumors (HGPTs). In the present study, we conducted an in-depth in silico analysis in OC cell lines using the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) microarray dataset with 53 HGPT and 10 normal samples. Differentially-Expressed Genes (DEGs) were also identified by GEO2r. A variety of analyses, including gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA), ChIP enrichment analysis (ChEA), eXpression2Kinases (X2K) and Human Protein Atlas (HPA), elucidated signaling pathways, transcription factors (TFs), kinases, and proteome, respectively. Protein–Protein Interaction (PPI) networks were generated using STRING and Cytoscape, in which co-expression and hub genes were pinpointed by the cytoHubba plug-in. Validity of DEG analysis was achieved via Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA). Of note, KIAA0101, RAD51AP1, FAM83D, CEP55, PRC1, CKS2, CDCA5, NUSAP1, ECT2, and TRIP13 were found as top 10 hub genes; SIN3A, VDR, TCF7L2, NFYA, and FOXM1 were detected as predominant TFs in HGPTs; CEP55, PRC1, CKS2, CDCA5, and NUSAP1 were identified as potential biomarkers from hub gene clustering. Further analysis indicated hsa-miR-215-5p, hsa-miR-193b-3p, and hsa-miR-192-5p as key miRNAs targeting HGPT genes. Collectively, our findings spotlighted HGPT-associated genes, TFs, miRNAs, and pathways as prospective biomarkers, offering new avenues for OC diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Abstract This paper uses enhanced turbulent flow in water-based optimization (TFWO), specifically ETFWO, to achieve optimal power flow (OPF) in electrical networks that use both solar photovoltaic (PV) units and wind turbines (WTs). ETFWO is an enhanced TFWO that alters the TFWO structure through the promotion of communication and collaboration. Individuals in the population now interact with each other more often, which makes it possible to search more accurately in the search area while ignoring local optimal solutions. Probabilistic models and real-time data on wind speed and solar irradiance are used to predict the power output of WT and PV producers. The OPF and solution methods are evaluated using the IEEE 30-bus network. By comparing ETFWO to analogical other optimization techniques applied to the same groups of constraints, control variables, and system data, we can gauge the algorithm’s robustness and efficiency in solving OPF. It is shown in this paper that the proposed ETFWO algorithm can provide suitable solutions to OPF problems in electrical networks with integrated PV units and WTs in terms of energy generation costs, improved voltage profiles, emissions, and losses, compared to the traditional TFWO and other proposed algorithms in recent studies.

Abstract Elective transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) placement can worsen cognitive dysfunction in hepatic encephalopathy (HE) patients due to toxins, including possible microbial metabolites, entering the systemic circulation. We conducted untargeted metabolomics on a prospective cohort of 22 patients with cirrhosis undergoing elective TIPS placement and followed them up to one year post TIPS for HE development. Here we suggest that pre-existing intrahepatic shunting predicts HE severity post-TIPS. Bile acid levels decrease in the peripheral vein post-TIPS, and the abundances of three specific conjugated di- and tri-hydroxylated bile acids are inversely correlated with HE grade. Bilirubins and glycerophosphocholines undergo chemical modifications pre- to post-TIPS and based on HE grade. Our results suggest that TIPS-induced metabolome changes can impact HE development, and that pre-existing intrahepatic shunting could be used to predict HE severity post-TIPS.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to present a conceptual model where consumer electronic sports (eSports) engagement (CeSE) acts a predictor for gamers’ online engagement in eSports-related products/firm either through direct contribution (purchase intention) or indirect contribution (co-production, community engagement, word-of-mouth and recruitment). Design/methodology/approach – Data from 262 eSports consumers aged 18–24 years were collected and analyzed through WarpPLS 8.0. Findings – The findings of this study confirm that CeSE significantly influences all dimensions of the consumption behaviors (purchase intention, co-production, community engagement, word-of-mouth and recruitment). Originality/value – This study provides empirical support for a conceptual framework developed through the social exchange theory and engagement theory. Besides, hierarchical component model approach is applied to estimate the composite model of CeSE.

Purpose – This study aims to examine the impact of website design, reliability and perceived ease of use as an engagement motivational factors on customer e-trust and e-retention in online shopping. Design/methodology/approach – By using deductive approach, quantitative methods and purposive sampling technique, this study has collected the data from 295 young online customers to enhance an understanding of website design, reliability and perceived ease of use in an online shopping context. Findings – The findings revealed interesting insights where reliability is the most significant predictor of customer e-trust in online shopping, followed by perceived ease of use and website design. In addition, a significant mediating effect of e-trust is found between customer e-retention, website design, reliability and perceived ease of use. Research limitations/implications – Future research is recommended to predict the antecedents of online engagement motivational factors with value co-creation and co-creation experience in online shopping context. Originality/value – This study offers fresh insights about driving elements and impediments of online customer retention. Customer engagement comprising of website design, reliability and perceived ease of use appear to influence the online customer retention through direct and indirect effect.

Abstract Background Renal dysfunction is one of the adverse effects observed in methamphetamine (MET) or tramadol abusers. In this study, we aimed to review articles involving intoxication with MET or tramadol to assess the occurrence of renal dysfunction. Methods Two researchers systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Sciences, and Google Scholar databases from 2000 to 2022. All articles that assessed renal function indexes including creatine, Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN), and Creatine phosphokinase (CPK) in MET and tramadol intoxication at the time of admission in hospitals were included. We applied random effect model with Knapp-Hartung adjustment for meta-analysis using STATA.16 software and reported outcomes with pooled Weighted Mean (WM). Results Pooled WM for BUN was 29.85 (95% CI, 21.25–38.46) in tramadol intoxication and 31.64(95% CI, 12.71–50.57) in MET intoxication. Pooled WM for creatinine in tramadol and MET intoxication was respectively 1.04 (95% CI, 0.84–1.25) and 1.35 (95% CI, 1.13–1.56). Also, pooled WM for CPK was 397.68(376.42-418.94) in tramadol and 909.87(549.98-1269.76) in MET intoxication. No significance was observed in publication bias and heterogeneity tests. Conclusion Our findings showed that tramadol or MET intoxication is associated with a considerably increased risk of renal dysfunction that may result in organ failure.

Abstract Janus kinase 3 (JAK3) is a member of the JAK family of tyrosine kinase proteins involved in cytokine receptor-mediated intracellular signal transduction through the JAK/STAT signaling pathway. JAK3 was previously shown as differentially expressed in granulosa cells (GC) of bovine pre-ovulatory follicles suggesting that JAK3 could modulate GC function and activation/inhibition of downstream targets. We used JANEX-1, a JAK3 inhibitor, and FSH treatments and analyzed proliferation markers, steroidogenic enzymes and phosphorylation of target proteins including STAT3, CDKN1B/p27Kip1 and MAPK8IP3/JIP3. Cultured GC were treated with or without FSH in the presence or not of JANEX-1. Expression of steroidogenic enzyme CYP11A1, but not CYP19A1, was upregulated in GC treated with FSH and both were significantly decreased when JAK3 was inhibited. Proliferation markers CCND2 and PCNA were reduced in JANEX-1-treated GC and upregulated by FSH. Western blots analyses showed that JANEX-1 treatment reduced pSTAT3 amounts while JAK3 overexpression increased pSTAT3. Similarly, FSH treatment increased pSTAT3 even in JANEX-1-treated GC. UHPLC-MS/MS analyses revealed phosphorylation of specific amino acid residues within JAK3 as well as CDKN1B and MAPK8IP3 suggesting possible activation or inhibition post-FSH or JANEX-1 treatments. We show that FSH activates JAK3 in GC, which could phosphorylate target proteins and likely modulate other signaling pathways involving CDKN1B and MAPK8IP3, therefore controlling GC proliferation and steroidogenic activity.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are structures with high surface area that can be used to remove heavy metals (HMs) efficiently from the environment. The effect of MOFs on HMs removal from contaminated soils has not been already investigated. Monometallic MOFs are easier to synthesize with high efficiency, and it is also important to compare their structures. In the present study, Zn-BTC, Cu-BTC, and Fe-BTC as three metal-trimesic acid MOFs were synthesized from the combination of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and iron (Fe) nitrates with benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) by solvothermal method. BET analysis showed that the specific surface areas of the Zn-BTC, Cu-BTC, and Fe-BTC were 502.63, 768.39 and 92.4 m2g-1, respectively. The synthesized MOFs were added at the rates of 0.5 and 1% by weight to the soils contaminated with 100 mgkg-1 of Zn, nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd). Then quinoa seeds were sown in the treated soils. According to the results, the uptakes of all four HMs by quinoa were the lowest in the Cu-BTC 1% treated pots and the lowest uptakes were observed for Pb in shoot and root (4.87 and 0.39, μgpot-1, respectively). The lowest concentration of metal extracted with EDTA in the post-harvest soils was for Pb (11.86 mgkg-1) in the Cu-BTC 1% treatment. The lowest metal pollution indices were observed after the application of Cu-BTC 1%, which were 20.29 and 11.53 for shoot and root, respectively. With equal molar ratios, highly porous and honeycomb-shaped structure, the most crystallized and the smallest constituent particle size (34.64 nm) were obtained only from the combination of Cu ions with H3BTC. The lowest porosity, crystallinity, and a semi-gel like feature was found for the Fe-BTC. The synthesized Cu-BTC showed the highest capacity of stabilizing HMs, especially Pb in the soil compared to the Zn-BTC and the Fe-BTC. The highly porous characteristic of the Cu-BTC can make the application of this MOF as a suitable environmental solution for the remediation of high Pb-contaminated soils.

The IPR-R1 Triga nuclear research reactor of the Nuclear Technology Development Center (CDTN) is one of the oldest reactors in operation in the world. It is a compact and inherently safe reactor that operates at a continuous power level of 100 kW with a solid homogeneous General Atomic (GA) fuel element of zirconium hydride moderator homogeneously combined with 20% enriched uranium. The reactor core is at the bottom of a tank under approximately 6.0 meters of shielding water. The long operation time of the reactor, 63 years, and the contact of the water with the core, can induce corrosive processes in the IPR-R1 reactor and affect its safe operation. To keep the water quality according to the chemical-physical recommended standards, a quality management program, as recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), was implemented. The water quality management program is a guideline of good practices applied to nuclear reactors, targeting to keep their water coolants at specified physical-chemical standard. The main aim of the present work is to introduce IPR-R1 Triga’s water chemistry program results from the second half of 2022 till the first half of 2023, when the installation returned to its regular activities after the Covid-19 pandemic. The physical-chemical parameters evaluated (e.g.: pH, alpha and beta radiation, electrical conductivity and gamma emitters) shows that the IPR-R1 reactor operates within recommended safety standards.

Treatment of wastewater produced by industries and their environmental pollution has been challenging. This review study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of anaerobic digesters in the treatment of sugarcane industry wastewater. To perform a meta-analysis, a random-effects model, Q-test, and I2 statistics were used. Moreover, sensitivity analysis and subgrouping were used to investigate the source of heterogeneity. All statistical analyses were performed using Stata 14.1. After reviewing the related articles, 13 published studies met the criteria to enter the present research. The result of the integration of these studies was 79%, and the type of wastewater was found to affect heterogeneity. Also, the highest and lowest amounts were attributed to Mexico and Japan, respectively. It was concluded that the anaerobic digesters were a suitable option for the treatment of various sugarcane wastewater, stressing the point that Vinasse wastewater required different operating conditions.

Based on the versatile nature and applications of Carbon foam (CF), up to now many attempts were performed to improve the structure and properties of CF by incorporating various additives in the CF matrix. But these additives improved one property on the cost of another ones. Herein, we have synergistically incorporated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene oxide (GO) with varying loadings as additives in the CF matrix via direct pyrolysis to achieve all the desired properties. Seven different types of CF composites including pure CF were prepared and their effect on the structure, mechanical, thermal, electrical and catalytic characteristics has been reported. The results revealed that after the inclusion of MWCNTs and GO contents, the microstructural performance of CF samples was amazingly improved. Additionally, it was observed that mechanical, thermal, electrical and catalytic behaviors of the CF samples were significantly enhances by the increase of nanohybrids. The compressive strength and Young's modulus reveals their optimum limits up to 19.3 and 57.4 MPa respectively on 2 wt.% MWCNTs-GO additive loadings. Similarly, the greatest thermal and electrical conductivities of 30.92 W/m. K and 27.4 × 103 S/m were showed by CF samples having 2 wt. % MWCNTs-GO loadings. Whereas, the decolorization activity of the CF and their nanocomposites were tested against methyl orange dye and it was observed that the sample with enhanced MWCNTs and GO have good decolorization activity and much sustainable than other samples. The 4% CF/MWCNTs-GO decolorized about 76% MO dye under exposure to UV light within 60 min. The decolorization of MO dye increases with increasing nanocomposite dosage and decreasing initial dye concentration.

Introduction: Blood-brain barrier with strictly controlled activity participates in a coordinated transfer of bioactive molecules from the blood to the brain. Among different delivery approaches, gene delivery is touted as a promising strategy for the treatment of several nervous system disorders. The transfer of exogenous genetic elements is limited by the paucity of suitable carriers. As a correlate, designing high-efficiency biocarriers for gene delivery is challenging. This study aimed to deliver pEGFP-N1 plasmid into the brain parenchyma using CDX-modified chitosan (CS) nanoparticles (NPs). Methods: Herein, we attached CDX, a 16 amino acids peptide, to the CS polymer using bifunctional polyethylene glycol (PEG) formulated with sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP), by ionic gelation method. Developed NPs and their nanocomplexes with pEGFP-N1 (CS-PEG-CDX/pEGFP) were characterized using DLS, NMR, FTIR, and TEM analyses. For in vitro assays, a rat C6 glioma cell line was used for cell internalization efficiency. The biodistribution and brain localization of nanocomplexes were studied in a mouse model after intraperitoneal injection using in vivo imaging and fluorescent microscopy. Results: Our results showed that CS-PEG-CDX/pEGFP NPs were uptaken by glioma cells in a dose-dependent manner. In vivo imaging revealed successful entry into the brain parenchyma indicated with the expression of green fluorescent protein (GFP) as a reporter protein. However, the biodistribution of developed NPs was also evident in other organs especially the spleen, liver, heart, and kidneys. Conclusion: Based on our results, CS-PEG-CDX NPs can provide a safe and effective nanocarrier for brain gene delivery into the central nervous system (CNS).

Abstract Recent advances in extracellular vesicle (EVs) detection and isolation methods have led to the development of novel therapeutic modalities. Among different types of EVs, exosomes (Exos) can transfer different signaling biomolecules and exhibit several superior features compared to whole-cell-based therapies. Therapeutic factors are normally loaded into the Exo lumen or attached to their surface for improving the on-target delivery rate and regenerative outcomes. Despite these advantages, there are several limitations in the application of Exos in in vivo conditions. It was suggested that a set of proteins and other biological compounds are adsorbed around Exos in aqueous phases and constitute an external layer named protein corona (PC). Studies have shown that PC can affect the physicochemical properties of synthetic and natural nanoparticles (NPs) after introduction in biofluids. Likewise, PC is generated around EVs, especially Exos in in vivo conditions. Chalcone synthase (CHS) is the pivotal enzyme that catalyzes the first committed step of the phenylpropanoid pathway leading to flavonoids. Herein, we identified twenty-seven OsCHS genes from the rice genome database. The bioinformatics analysis, including conserved motif, domain, interactive proteins, gene ontology (GO), target micro RNAs (miRNA) prediction, and the OsCHS physiochemical properties, highlight the key aspects of OsCHS genes in Oryza sativa L. The OsCHS proteins' phylogeny was further clustered into 4 sub-groups (Group I- Group IV) based on the structural similarities and functional diversities. The GO analysis of OsCHS proteins showed they are highly stress-responsive (biotic/abiotic) and involved in various growth and developmental processes. The microarray expression analysis showed transcription in twelve rice tissues, and the differential expression pattern of OsCHS genes revealed their possible involvement against salinity and drought. The higher expression of OsCHS15 in the OsWRKY65-OE line indicates its potential in hormonal-mediated stress response. The predicted miRNA that includes miR2260, miR167, miR11337, and miR2232 families further the engagement of OsCHS genes in the post-translational regulation of rice growth and stress-responsive. Owing to the above-mentioned outcomes, we speculate that OsCHS genes in the O. sativa genome play an essential role not only in growth and development but also in fine-tuning the immune responses to various environmental stresses and provide major indications for further functional studies.

Nanodiamond (ND) is becoming the core center of interest for many researchers due to its immense utilization in different fields of science. The extraordinarily unique attributes provided by NDs include biocompatibility, easy production, chemical inertness, rich surface chemistry, small size, and fluorescence resistance. In biomedical sciences, all these characteristics uplift the standards of ND particles. Recent studies on the biomedical side have been found to strengthen its significance ever since ND tested positive for utilization in diagnostics and drug delivery. In addition, NDs have been proven beneficial in the manufacturing of biodegradable surgical instruments, scaffolds for tissue engineering, and drugs to eliminate resistant microbes and viruses. Genetic materials are also delivered to the center of the nucleus with the aid of ND particles. In this review, we have discussed in detail all the benefits of NDs, their applications in sensors, ND-blood interactions, blood-contacting, orthopedics, anti-cancer agents, antimicrobial agents, and drug/gene delivery. The importance and significance of the purification, synthesis, processing, and surface functionalization of NDs have been discussed. Recent advances in modern technologies in the field of biomedical and biological sciences also have been covered in this manuscript.

Abstract Introduction Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a common condition that affects social and psychological well-being of women. The risk of PMS is higher among obese women. The aim of this study was to identify the factors that influence the severity of PMS in women with central obesity. Materials and methods This cross-sectional study was performed on 30–50 year-old women with abdominal obesity (waist circumference > 80 cm). The following data were collected: demographic data, anthropometric measurements, premenstrual symptoms screening tools, semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire, 42-item depression, anxiety, and stress questionnaire (DASS-42), as well as serum vitamin D, and renal function tests. Results A total of 139 women (mean age of 41.40 ± 7.39 years old) participated in the study. The prevalence of mild, moderate and severe premenstrual symptoms was 38.7% (55/142), 31.7% (45/142) and 27.5% (39/142), respectively. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of anthropometric measurements and energy-adjusted nutrient intakes (p > 0.05). Abstract As a common belief, most viruses can egress from the host cells as single particles and transmit to uninfected cells. Emerging data have revealed en bloc viral transmission as lipid bilayer-cloaked particles via extracellular vesicles especially exosomes (Exo). The supporting membrane can be originated from multivesicular bodies during intra-luminal vesicle formation and autophagic response. Exo are nano-sized particles, ranging from 40–200 nm, with the ability to harbor several types of signaling molecules from donor to acceptor cells in a paracrine manner, resulting in the modulation of specific signaling reactions in target cells. The phenomenon of Exo biogenesis consists of multiple and complex biological steps with the participation of diverse constituents and molecular pathways. Due to similarities between Exo biogenesis and virus replication and the existence of shared pathways, it is thought that viruses can hijack the Exo biogenesis machinery to spread and evade immune cells. To this end, Exo can transmit complete virions (as single units or aggregates), separate viral components, and naked genetic materials. Abstract Background Detomidine is an α‐2 agonist sedative drug which reduces the release of norepinephrine in nerves. Administering this drug through intranasal (IN) route could cause direct transmission to the central nervous system. Therefore, IN administration of detomidine would decrease the side effects and the onset of sedation. Objectives In this study, IN administration of detomidine in sheep through an atomiser was compared to its IV administration. Methods Fifteen mature female sheep with an approximate weight of 49.53 ± 1.72 kg were used. They were randomly divided into three groups: (1) atomising 10 μg/kg (IND10); (2) IV 10 μg/kg (IVD) and (3) atomising 30 μg/kg (IND30). Following administration, vital signs, electrocardiographic components, sedative score and biochemistry profile were measured after 15, 30 and 60 min, which were compared with the baseline measures. Results Bradycardia and the percentage of reduction from the baseline value in the respiratory rate were lower in the IND10 group compared to those in the IVD group. There was no significant difference in terms of the temperature and blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) among all the groups (p > 0.05). The level of cortisol declined in all the groups, and in the IND30 (60 min), it was significantly different with the baseline value. The level of glucose increased in all the groups compared to the baseline, which was not significant. Insulin concentration was reduced in all the groups, and in the IND30 group, it changed significantly 60 min after the drug administration. Sedation onset time was faster in the IV group. However, sedation scores between the two administration methods were not different, and only a dose‐dependent increase was found in the sedation score in the atomisation group. Conclusions Our findings revealed that IN atomisation of detomidine triggers similar sedation as its IV administration, which could be used as an alternative method.

The present study aimed at developing a conceptual model as well as categorizing blockchain driving factors in promoting entrepreneurship. The method of study was qualitative content analysis and the main tool of the data collection was semi-structured interviews. Data analysis was performed using directional and summary hybrid content analysis techniques. The identified factors include 140 open source codes that were categorized into 6 main categories which, using MAXQDA software, were classified and a conceptual model was drawn. Kappa method was used to evaluate the reliability and quality control of the present study. The kappa coefficient, calculated by SPSS software, was 0.950 which is highly acceptable. The results show that the six identified components, driving blockchain's promotion of entrepreneurship, include economic, technological, political, legal, social and environmental. Given that blockchain technology is not yet mature enough and is being developed, the current stage is a good opportunity for business units to be able to mitigate potential risks by employing appropriate strategies and taking advantage of potential opportunities and create a lasting competitive advantage for their business. The findings of this study are expected to be key metrics to assist managers and entrepreneurs in the field of entrepreneurship.

Background: Cervical lymph node metastasis is a prognostic factor in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Metastasizing PTC to cervical lymph nodes is very common and occurs in 30-80% of patients. Aim: To investigate the risk factors of skip lateral lymph node metastasis in PTC patients. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at a single institution and included PTC patients treated in the period between 2018 and 2021. All patients with PTC who underwent total thyroidectomy with central and lateral block neck dissection were reviewed for skip metastases which was confirmed by histopathologic examination. Results: During the study period, 267 patients with PTC underwent total thyroidectomy with central and/or lateral block neck dissection. Among them, only 64 patients matched the study inclusion criteria and their pathology was reviewed for skip metastases. Thirteen (20.3%) patients showed skip metastases. Their mean (±SD) age was 50.1 (±16.7) years and 8 (61.5%) were females. Only age ≥40 years and tumor size ≤0.5 cm differed significantly between patients with skip metastasis and those without. Conclusions: The results support the conduction of a prospective multi-centric study with a larger sample size to better understand the risk factors for developing skip metastasis in PTC. This would help in selecting patients with a risk for skip metastasis.

The optimization problems are becoming more complicated, requiring new and efficient optimization techniques to solve them. Many bio-inspired meta-heuristic algorithms have emerged in the last decade to solve these complex problems as most of these algorithms may be trapped into local optima and could not effectively solve all types of optimization problems. Hence, researchers are still trying to develop new and better optimization algorithms. This paper introduces a novel biologically-based optimization algorithm called circulatory system-based optimization (CSBO). CSBO is modeled based on the function of the body’s blood vessels with two distinctive circuits, i.e. pulmonary and systemic circuits. The proposed CSBO algorithm is tested on a wide variety of complex functions of the real world and validated with the standard meta-heuristic algorithms. The results indicate that the CSBO algorithm successfully achieves the optimal solutions and avoids local optima. Embryo transfer (ET) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) are increasing in use by dairy producers as a means to breed their animals as these assisted reproductive techniques can optimize the genetics of the dairy breed or enable “beef on dairy” programs to increase the profitability of the dairy. Due to the advantages of ET and IVF, it is anticipated that their use will continue to increase despite the status of underwhelmingly low pregnancy outcomes. Pregnancy rates of bovine ET/IVF remain below 56%, with many dairy producers implementing beef on dairy programs reporting pregnancy to be lower than 23%. The inability to objectively evaluate embryo health prior to transfer into a recipient is a contributing factor to this problem as 20% of transferred embryos are inviable at the time of transfer and have little chance of establishing a pregnancy. The objective of this research was to evaluate bovine embryo real-time morphokinetic activity based on 30 s video recordings of day 7.5 morulas and correlate morphokinetic activity to developmental outcomes. Eighty-eight embryos were recorded in standard embryo culture conditions with an SMZ-1000 Stereo zoom microscope and TE-300 Nikon inverted microscope. The difference in the embryo’s morphokinetic activity was measured frame-by-frame and correlated to embryo hatching outcomes. It was found that embryos with lower morphokinetic activity demonstrated higher hatching rates and developmental outcomes, suggesting measurement of embryo morphokinetic activity is a noninvasive and non-subjective method to evaluate embryo competency prior to transfer and can be used to improve the reproductive efficiency and profitability of IVF/ET of dairy cattle.

Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) technology has been identified to be a potential disruptor to the wind energy industry. However, this technology is yet to deliver the promised performance, mainly due to its system design. To help designers reveal the VAWTs’ technological potential, the current study focuses on developing a physics-based, interrelated multi-domain dynamic model of the whole system to be used for systematic design optimisation and integrated system performance analysis. To achieve this the subsystems and design parameters of a typical VAWT are first identified. Then by dynamically coupling domain-independent models of the involved components with DMST, an integrated parametric modelling platform is generated and executed in MATLAB/Simulink. The developed parametric tool is then validated at a system level using performance data from a 6kW VAWT-X Energy case study turbine, showing a high level of accuracy and robustness. Finally, the system dynamics are studied through sensitivity analyses to evaluate the suitability of the platform for further dynamic analysis and design optimisation. The simulated results indicate the existence of component interaction induced dynamics with significant impact on system performance if neglected.

ABSTRACT Next-generation sequencing technologies have enabled many advances across diverse areas of biology, with many benefiting from increased sample size. Although the cost of running next-generation sequencing instruments has dropped substantially over time, the cost of sample preparation methods has lagged behind. To counter this, researchers have adapted library miniaturization protocols and large sample pools to maximize the number of samples that can be prepared by a certain amount of reagents and sequenced in a single run. However, due to high variability of sample quality, over and underrepresentation of samples in a sequencing run has become a major issue in high-throughput sequencing. This leads to misinterpretation of results due to increased noise, and additional time and cost rerunning underrepresented samples. To overcome this problem, we present a normalization method that uses shallow iSeq sequencing to accurately inform pooling volumes based on read distribution. This method is superior to the widely used fluorometry methods, which cannot specifically target adapter-ligated molecules that contribute to sequencing output. Our normalization method not only quantifies adapter-ligated molecules but also allows normalization of feature space; for example, we can normalize to reads of interest such as non-ribosomal reads. As a result, this normalization method improves the efficiency of high-throughput next-generation sequencing by reducing noise and producing higher average reads per sample with more even sequencing depth. IMPORTANCE High-throughput next generation sequencing (NGS) has significantly contributed to the field of genomics; however, further improvements can maximize the potential of this important tool. Uneven sequencing of samples in a multiplexed run is a common issue that leads to unexpected extra costs or low-quality data. To mitigate this problem, we introduce a normalization method based on read counts rather than library concentration. This method allows for an even distribution of features of interest across samples, improving the statistical power of data sets and preventing the financial loss associated with resequencing libraries. This method optimizes NGS, which already has huge importance across many areas of biology.

Key Clinical Message In contrast to intestinal balantidiasis, which is widespread throughout the world, urinary balantidiasis is uncommon. It often affects people with underlying diseases, and acute infections may be fatal. Even though urine is not typical for this parasite, specific morphologic characteristics can aid in accurate diagnosis. Abstract Balantidium coli is a ciliated protozoan which can infect intestinal system. Urinary balantidiasis is an extremely rare infection that may cause serious issues in patients with underlying diseases. Herein, we present a case of urinary balantidiasis in a patient with bladder cancer.

Conventional Fricke is an aqueous ferrous sulfate solution that has been widely studied in the field of chemical dosimetry. The feasibility of its use has become attractive for high dose measurements that are of clinical interest in the field of radiotherapy and for industrial purposes, in the irradiation of blood bags and the sterilization of surgical material. The derivation of the absorbed dose of Fricke depends on the radiation-induced oxidation of iron (II) ions (Fe2+) present in the aqueous solution to iron (III) ions (Fe3+), which occurs after exposure to ionising radiation. In this paper, it is proposed to evaluate the dose response of the Fricke dosimeter using two different analytical techniques, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). Twelve groups of samples were analysed in triplicate, irradiated with doses between 0 and 800 Gy, using a cobalt-60 source (60Co). The dose rate of Fricke dosimeters was evaluated against the practical values obtained. The different methods allowed an analytical correlation of the species of oxidised iron (Fe3+) using a linearity curve as a function of the applied radiation dose.
