We present an analysis of the UV continuum slope, beta, using a sample of 733 galaxies selected from a mixture of JWST ERS/GTO/GO observational programs and with z > 4. We consider spectroscopic data obtained with the low resolution PRISM/CLEAR NIRSpec configuration. Studying the correlation of beta with M_UV we find a decreasing trend of beta = (-0.056 +- 0.017) M_UV - (3.01 +- 0.34), consistent with brighter galaxies having redder beta as found in previous works. However, analysing the trend in separate redshift bins, we find that at high redshift the relation becomes much flatter, consistent with a flat slope. Furthermore, we find that beta decreases with redshift with an evolution as beta = (-0.075 +- 0.010) z - (1.496 +- 0.056), consistent with most previous results that show a steepening of the spectra going at higher z. We then select a sample of galaxies with extremely blue slopes (beta < -2.6): such slopes are steeper than what is predicted by stellar evolution models, even for dust free, young, metal poor populations, when the contribution of nebular emission is included. We select 51 extremely blue galaxies (XBGs) and we investigate the possible physical origin of their steep slopes, comparing them to a sub-sample of redder galaxies (matched in redshift and M_UV). We find that XBGs have younger stellar populations, stronger ionization fields, lower dust attenuation, and lower but not pristine metallicity (~ 10% solar) compared to red galaxies. However, these properties alone cannot explain the extreme beta values. By using indirect inference of Lyman continuum escape, using the most recent models, we estimate escape fractions f_esc > 10% in at least 25% of XBGs, while all the red sources have smaller f_esc. A reduced nebular continuum contribution as due to either a high escape fraction or to a bursty star-formation history is likely the origin of the extremely blue slopes., Comment: Submitted to A&A (12 pages, 6 figures, and 2 tables)

Investigating the ionizing emission of star-forming galaxies is critical to understanding their contribution to reionization and their impact on the surrounding environment. The number of ionizing photons available to reionize the intergalactic medium (IGM) depends not only on the abundance of galaxies but also on their efficiency in producing ionizing photons ($\xi_{ion}$). We aim to estimate the $\xi_{ion}$ using Balmer lines in a sample of 731 galaxies at $4\leq z \leq 10$ selected from different JWST surveys. We used the available HST and JWST photometry to perform a SED fitting in the sample to determine their physical properties. We used the BAGPIPES code and assumed a delayed exponential model for the star formation history. We used the NIRSpec spectra from prism or grating configurations to estimate Balmer luminosities and then constrained $\xi_{ion}$ values after dust correction. We find a mean value of 10$^{25.23}$Hz erg$^{-1}$ for $\xi_{ion}$ in the sample with an observed scatter of 0.42dex. We find an increase in the median values of $\xi_{ion}$ which confirms the redshift evolution of $\xi_{ion}$ found in other works. Regarding the relation with physical properties, we find a decrease of $\xi_{ion}$ with increasing stellar mass, indicating that low-mass galaxies are efficient producers of ionizing photons. We also find an increase of $\xi_{ion}$ with increasing specific star formation rate (sSFR) and increasing UV absolute magnitude, which indicates that faint galaxies and with high sSFR are also efficient producers. We also investigated the relation of $\xi_{ion}$ with the EW([OIII]$\lambda$5007) and find that galaxies with the higher EW([OIII]) are the more efficient producers of ionizing photons. Similarly, we find that galaxies with higher O32 ratios and lower gas-phase metallicities (based on the R23 calibration) show higher $\xi_{ion}$ values., Comment: Submitted to A&A. The upcoming generation of telescopes, instruments, and surveys is poised to usher in an unprecedented "Big Data" era in the field of astronomy. Within this context, even seemingly modest tasks such as spectral line analyses could become increasingly challenging for astronomers. In this paper, we announce the release of ${\rm L{\small I}M{\small E}}$. This package is tailored for multidisciplinary observations with long-slit and integral field spectroscopy (IFS) support. ${\rm L{\small I}M{\small E}}$ functions encompass the reading of observational files, detecting lines, conditioned line fitting, and the plotting and storage of results. Most importantly, these measurements are structured to support the subsequent chemical and kinematic analyses. To reduce the coding effort required from users, we introduced a notation system for atomic transitions that is accessible to humans and machine-readable. Along with this system, we present an extensive database of line bands, spanning from the ultraviolet to the infrared wavelength range. Additionally, we propose a model designed to train machine learning algorithms in line detection. ${\rm L{\small I}M{\small E}}$ features a comprehensive online documentation, which details the command attributes and includes several tutorials. These tutorials range from measuring a single line to analyzing an entire IFS data cube. This library functions and measurements are showcased in an online virtual observatory. The data in this interactive website come from the JWST NIRSpec observations of the CEERs survey. We present determinations of the gas-phase and stellar metallicities of a sample of 65 star-forming galaxies at $z \simeq 3.5$ using rest-frame far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectroscopy from the VANDELS survey in combination with follow-up rest-frame optical spectroscopy from VLT/KMOS and Keck/MOSFIRE. We infer gas-phase oxygen abundances ($Z_{\mathrm{g}}$; tracing O/H) via strong optical nebular lines and stellar iron abundances ($Z_{\star}$; tracing Fe/H) from full spectral fitting to the FUV continuum. Our sample spans the stellar mass range $8.5 < \mathrm{log}(M_{\star}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot}) < 10.5$ and shows clear evidence for both a stellar and gas-phase mass-metallicity relation (MZR). We find that our O and Fe abundance estimates both exhibit a similar mass-dependence, such that $\mathrm{Fe/H}\propto M_{\star}^{0.30\pm0.11}$ and $\mathrm{O/H}\propto M_{\star}^{0.32\pm0.09}$. At fixed $M_{\star}$ we find that, relative to their solar values, O abundances are systematically larger than Fe abundances (i.e., $\alpha$-enhancement).We estimate an average enhancement of $\mathrm{(O/Fe)} = 2.65 \pm 0.16 \times \mathrm{(O/Fe)_\odot}$ which appears to be independent of $M_{\star}$. We employ analytic chemical evolution models to place a constraint on the strength of galactic-level outflows via the mass-outflow factor ($\eta$). We show that outflow efficiencies that scale as $\eta \propto M_{\star}^{-0.32}$ can simultaneously explain the functional form of of the stellar and gas-phase MZR, as well as the degree of $\alpha$-enhancement at fixed Fe/H. Our results add further evidence to support a picture in which $\alpha$-enhanced abundance ratios are ubiquitous in high-redshift star-forming galaxies, as expected for young systems whose interstellar medium is primarily enriched by core-collapse supernovae., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, accepted in MNRAS

The ultraviolet continuum traces young stars while the near-infrared unveils older stellar populations and dust-obscured regions. Balmer emission lines provide insights on gas properties and young stellar objects but are highly affected by dust attenuation. The near-infrared Paschen lines suffer less dust attenuation and can be used to measure star formation rates (SFRs) in star-forming regions obscured by dust clouds. We select 13 sources between redshifts 1 and 3 observed with HST, JWST/NIRCam and NIRSpec based on the availability of at least one Balmer and one Paschen line with S/N > 5. With a newly-developed version of CIGALE, we fit their hydrogen line equivalent widths (EWs) and photometric data. We assess the impacts of the removal of spectroscopic data by comparing the quality of the fits of the spectro-photometric data to those with photometric data only. We compare the single (BC03) vs binary (BPASS) stellar populations models in the fitting process of spectro-photometric data. We derive the differential attenuation and explore different attenuation recipes by fitting spectro-photometric data with BC03. For each stellar model and for each input dataset (with and without EWs), we quantify the deviation on the SFRs and stellar masses from the "standard" choice. On average, the SFRs are overestimated and the stellar masses are underestimated when EWs are not included as input data. We find a major contribution of the H${\alpha}$ emission line to the broadband photometric measurements of our sources, and a trend of increasing contribution with specific SFR. Using the BPASS models has a significant impact on the derived SFRs and stellar masses. We show that a flexible attenuation recipe provides more accurate estimates of the dust attenuation parameters, especially the differential attenuation which agrees with the original value of Charlot & Fall (2000)., Comment: Accepted in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 19 pages, 15 figures

In this third paper of a series, we study the kinematics of the ionised gas and stars, calculating the dynamical masses of the circumnuclear star-forming regions in the ring of of the face-on spiral NGC 7742. We have used high spectral resolution data from the MEGARA instrument attached to the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) to measure the kinematical components of the nebular emission lines of selected HII regions and the stellar velocity dispersions from the CaT absorption lines that allow the derivation of the associated cluster virialized masses. The emission line profiles show two different kinematical components: a narrow one with velocity dispersion $\sim$ 10 km/s and a broad one with velocity dispersion similar to those found for the stellar absorption lines. The derived star cluster dynamical masses range from 2.5 $\times$ 10$^6$ to 10.0 $\times$ 10$^7$ M$_\odot$. The comparison of gas and stellar velocity dispersions suggests a scenario where the clusters have formed simultaneously in a first star formation episode with a fraction of the stellar evolution feedback remaining trapped in the cluster, subject to the same gravitational potential as the cluster stars. Between 0.15 and 7.07 % of the total dynamical mass of the cluster would have cooled down and formed a new, younger, population of stars, responsible for the ionisation of the gas currently observed., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Extreme emission line galaxies (EELGs) are typically characterized by high equivalent widths (EWs) which are driven by elevated specific star formation rates (sSFR) in low-mass galaxies with subsolar metallicities and little dust. Such extreme systems are rare in the local universe, but the number density of EELGs increases with redshift. Such starburst galaxies are currently presumed to be the main drivers of hydrogen reionization over 5.50.4-1 which indicates that star formation may be the dominant source of ionization. Based on the photometric fluxes, we find an increase of EW([OIII]+H$\beta$) with sSFR and $\Sigma_{SFR}$, and a decrease with age and stellar mass. The sample of EELGs can reach $\Sigma_{SFR}>$10Msun yr$^{-1}$kpc$^{-2}$ which indicate they are strong candidates of LyC leakers. The galaxy integrated star-formation rate (SFR) surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$) has been proposed as a valuable diagnostic of the mass accumulation in galaxies as being more tightly related to the physics of star-formation (SF) and stellar feedback than other SF indicators. In this paper, we assemble a statistical sample of 230 galaxies observed with JWST in the GLASS and CEERS spectroscopic surveys to estimate Balmer line based dust attenuations and SFRs, and UV rest-frame effective radii. We study the evolution of galaxy SFR and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ in the first 1.5 Billion years of our Universe, finding that $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ is mildly increasing with redshift with a linear slope of $0.16 \pm 0.06$. We also explore the dependence of SFR and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ on stellar mass, showing that a SF 'Main-Sequence' and a $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ `Main-Sequence' are in place out to z=10, with a similar slope compared to the same relations at lower redshifts. We find that the specific SFR (sSFR) and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ are correlated with the [OIII]5007/[OII]3727 ratio and with indirect estimates of the escape fraction of Lyman continuum photons, hence they likely play an important role in the evolution of ionization conditions and in the escape of ionizing radiation. We also search for spectral outflow signatures in a subset of galaxies observed at high resolution, finding an outflow incidence of $2/11$ ($=20\%^{32\%}_{9\%}$) at $z<6$, but no evidence at $z>6$ ($<26\%$). Finally, we find a positive correlation between A$_V$ and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$, and a flat trend as a function of sSFR, indicating that there is no evidence of a drop of A$_V$ in extremely star-forming galaxies between z=4 and 10. The resonant scattering interaction between Ly$\alpha$ photons and neutral hydrogen implies that a partially neutral IGM can significantly impact the detectability of Ly$\alpha$ emission in galaxies. The redshift evolution of the Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width distribution of galaxies thus offers a key probe of the degree of ionization during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). Previous in-depth investigations at $z$ $\geq$ 7 were limited by ground-based instrument capabilities. We present an extensive study of Ly$\alpha$ emission from galaxies at 4 < $z$ < 8.5, observed from the CEERS and JADES surveys in the JWST NIRSpec/PRISM configuration. The sample consists of 235 galaxies, among which we identify 65 as Ly$\alpha$ emitters. We first measure Ly$\alpha$ escape fractions from Balmer lines, and explore the correlations with the inferred galaxies' physical properties, which are similar to those found at lower redshift. We also investigate the possible connection between the escape of Ly$\alpha$ photons and the inferred escape fractions of LyC photons obtained from indirect indicators. We then analyze the redshift evolution of the Ly$\alpha$ emitter fraction, finding lower average values at $z$ = 5 and 6 compared to ground-based observations. At $z$ = 7 we find a very large difference in Ly$\alpha$ visibility between the EGS and GOODS-South fields, possibly due to the presence of early reionized regions in the EGS. Such large variance is also expected in the Cosmic Dawn II radiation-hydrodynamical simulation. Our findings suggest a scenario in which the ending phase of the EoR is characterized by $\sim$ 1 pMpc ionized bubbles around a high fraction of moderately bright galaxies. Finally, we characterize such two ionized regions found in the EGS at $z$ = 7.18 and $z$ = 7.49 by estimating the radius of the ionized bubble that each of the spectroscopically-confirmed members could have created., Comment: Submitted to A&A

We report observational evidence of highly turbulent ionized gas kinematics in a sample of 20 Lyman continuum (LyC) emitters (LCEs) at low redshift ($z\sim 0.3$). Detailed Gaussian modeling of optical emission line profiles in high-dispersion spectra consistently shows that both bright recombination and collisionally excited lines can be fitted as one or two narrow components with intrinsic velocity dispersion of $\sigma$ $\sim$ 40-100 km s$^{-1}$, in addition to a broader component with $\sigma \sim$ 100-300 km s$^{-1}$, which contributes up to $\sim$40% of the total flux and is preferentially blueshifted from the systemic velocity. We interpret the narrow emission as highly ionized gas close to the young massive star clusters and the broader emission as a signpost of unresolved ionized outflows, resulting from massive stars and supernova feedback. We find a significant correlation between the width of the broad emission and the LyC escape fraction, with strong LCEs exhibiting more complex and broader line profiles than galaxies with weaker or undetected LyC emission. We provide new observational evidence supporting predictions from models and simulations; our findings suggest that gas turbulence and outflows resulting from strong radiative and mechanical feedback play a key role in clearing channels through which LyC photons escape from galaxies. We propose that the detection of blueshifted broad emission in the nebular lines of compact extreme emission-line galaxies can provide a new indirect diagnostic of Lyman photon escape, which could be useful to identify potential LyC leakers in the epoch of reionization with the JWST., Comment: 11 Pages, 7 Figures. The Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation between the gas and the star formation rate (SFR) surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm gas}$-$\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$) is essential to understand star formation processes in galaxies. So far, it has been measured up to z~2.5 in main-sequence galaxies. In this letter, we aim to put constraints at z~4.5 using a sample of four massive main-sequence galaxies observed by ALMA at high resolution. We obtained ~0.3"-resolution [CII] and continuum maps of our objects, which we then converted into gas and obscured SFR surface density maps. In addition, we produced unobscured SFR surface density maps by convolving Hubble ancillary data in the rest-frame UV. We then derived the average $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ in various $\Sigma_{\rm gas}$ bins, and estimated the uncertainties using a Monte Carlo sampling. Our galaxy sample follows the KS relation measured in main-sequence galaxies at lower redshift and is slightly lower than predictions from simulations. Our data points probe the high end both in terms of $\Sigma_{\rm gas}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm gas}$, and gas depletion timescales (285-843 Myr) remain similar to z~2 objects. However, three of our objects are clearly morphologically disturbed, and we could have expected shorter gas depletion timescales (~100 Myr) similar to merger-driven starbursts at lower redshifts. VANDELS is a deep spectroscopic survey, performed with the VIMOS instrument at VLT, aimed at studying in detail the physical properties of high-redshift galaxies. VANDELS targeted about 2100 sources at 1

Green Pea galaxies are remarkable for their intense star formation and serve as a window into the early universe. In our study, we used integral field spectroscopy to examine 24 of these galaxies in the optical spectrum. We focused on the interaction between their ionized interstellar medium and the star formation processes within them. Our research generated spatial maps of emission lines and other properties like ionization structures and chemical conditions. These maps showed that areas with higher levels of excitation are usually located where starbursts are occurring. Continuum maps displayed more intricate structures than emission line maps and hinted at low brightness ionized gas in the galaxies' outer regions. We also analyzed integrated spectra from selected areas within these galaxies to derive physical properties like electron densities and temperatures. In some galaxies, we were able to determine metallicity levels. Our observations revealed the presence of high-ionizing lines in three galaxies, two of which had extremely high rates of star formation. Our findings provide valuable insights into the properties and star-forming processes in Green Pea galaxies, contributing to our broader understanding of galactic evolution in the early universe.

The Epoch of Reionization (EoR) began when galaxies grew in abundance and luminosity, so their escaping Lyman continuum (LyC) radiation started ionizing the surrounding neutral intergalactic medium (IGM). Despite significant recent progress, the nature and role of cosmic reionizers are still unclear: in order to define them, it would be necessary to directly measure their LyC escape fraction ($f_{esc}$). However, this is impossible during the EoR due to the opacity of the IGM. Consequently, many efforts at low and intermediate redshift have been made to determine measurable indirect indicators in high-redshift galaxies so that their $f_{esc}$ can be predicted. This work presents the analysis of the indirect indicators of 62 spectroscopically confirmed star-forming galaxies at $6 \leq z \leq 9$ from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) survey, combined with 12 sources with public data from other JWST-ERS campaigns. From the NIRCam and NIRSpec observations, we measured their physical and spectroscopic properties. We discovered that on average $6

We selected 35 low-mass SFGs (7.91000\r{A} and EW(CIII])>5\r{A}, closely resembling those now seen in EoR galaxies with JWST. We find low gas-phase metallicities 12+log(O/H)~7.5-8.5 and C/O abundances from 23%-128% solar, with no apparent increasing trend with metallicity. From our [OIII]4959,5007 profile modeling, we find that 65% of our sample shows an outflow component, which is shifted relative to the ionized gas systemic velocity, with mean $v_{max}$~280 km/s which correlates with the $\Sigma_{SFR}$. We find that the mass-loading factor $\mu$ of our sample is typically lower than in more massive galaxies from literature but higher than in typical local dwarf galaxies. In the stellar mass range covered, we find that $\mu$ increases with $\Sigma_{SFR}$ thus suggesting that for a given stellar mass, denser starbursts in low-mass galaxies produce stronger outflows. Our results complement the picture drawn by similar studies at lower redshift, suggesting that the removal of ionized gas in low-mass SFGs driven by stellar feedback is regulated by their stellar mass and by the strength and concentration of their star formation, i.e. $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. Recently, intense emission from nebular C III] and C IV emission lines have been observed in galaxies in the epoch of reionization ($z>6$) and have been proposed as the prime way of measuring their redshift and studying their stellar populations. These galaxies might represent the best examples of cosmic reionizers, as suggested by recent low-z observations of Lyman Continuum emitting galaxies, but it is hard to directly study the production and escape of ionizing photons at such high redshifts. The ESO spectroscopic public survey VANDELS offers the unique opportunity to find rare examples of such galaxies at cosmic noon ($z\sim 3$), thanks to the ultra deep observations available. We have selected a sample of 39 galaxies showing C IV emission, whose origin (after a careful comparison to photoionization models) can be ascribed to star formation and not to AGN. By using a multi-wavelength approach, we determine their physical properties including metallicity and ionization parameter and compare them to the properties of the parent population to understand what are the ingredients that could characterize the analogs of the cosmic reionizers. We find that C IV emitters are galaxies with high photons production efficiency and there are strong indications that they might have also large escape fraction: given the visibility of C IV in the epoch of reionization this could become the best tool to pinpoint the cosmic reioinzers., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, resubmitted to A&A after addressing the referee comments

Nearby metal-poor starburst dwarf galaxies present a unique opportunity to probe the physics of high-density star formation with a detail and sensitivity unmatched by any observation of the high-z Universe. Here we present the first results from a chemodynamical study of the nearby, gas-rich starburst dwarf CGCG 007-025. We use VLT/MUSE integral field spectroscopy to characterise the properties of the star-forming (SF) gas, from its metal content to its kinematics. The star formation rate (SFR) surface density presents a clumpy distribution, with the brightest knot hosting a 5 Myr young, Wolf-Rayet (WR) population (revealed by the presence of the characteristic 5808\AA~WR bump). The ionised gas kinematics are dominated by disordered motions. A superposition of a narrow ($\sigma \approx$ 50 km s$^{-1}$), intermediate (150 km s$^{-1}$) and broad (1000 km s$^{-1}$) kinematic components are needed to model the emission line profiles in the brightest SF region, suggesting the presence of energetic outflows from massive stars. The gas-phase metallicity of the galaxy spans 0.6 dex and displays a strong anti-correlation with SFR surface density, dropping to 12+log(O/H) = 7.7 in the central SF knot. The spatially-resolved BPTs indicates the gas is being ionised purely by SF processes. Finally, the anti-correlation between the SFR and the gas metallicity points out to accretion of metal-poor gas as the origin of the recent off-centre starburst, in which the infalling material ignites the SF episode., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, 1 table; published in MNRAS

We present a spatially resolved spectroscopic study for the metal poor HII galaxy J084220+115000 using MEGARA Integral Field Unit observations at the Gran Telescopio Canarias. We estimated the gas metallicity using the direct method for oxygen, nitrogen and helium and found a mean value of 12+$\log$(O/H)=$8.03\pm$0.06, and integrated electron density and temperature of $\sim161$ cm$^{-3}$ and $\sim15400$ K, respectively. The metallicity distribution shows a large range of $\Delta$(O/H) = 0.72 dex between the minimum and maximum (7.69$\pm$0.06 and 8.42$\pm$0.05) values, unusual in a dwarf star-forming galaxy. We derived an integrated $\log$(N/O) ratio of $-1.51\pm0.05$ and found that both N/O and O/H correspond to a primary production of metals. Spatially resolved maps indicate that the gas appears to be photoionized by massive stars according to the diagnostic line ratios. Between the possible mechanisms to explain the starburst activity and the large variation of oxygen abundance in this galaxy, our data support a possible scenario where we are witnessing an ongoing interaction triggering multiple star-forming regions localized in two dominant clumps., Comment: 24 pages, 26 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

To better understand the ionizing properties of galaxies in the EoR, we investigate deep, rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) spectra of $\simeq 500$ star-forming galaxies at $3 \leq z \leq 5$ selected from the public ESO-VANDELS spectroscopic survey. The absolute ionizing photon escape fraction ($f_{\rm esc}^{\rm abs}$) is derived by combining absorption line measurements with estimates of the UV attenuation. The ionizing production efficiency ($\xi_{ion}$) is calculated by fitting the far-UV (FUV) stellar continuum of the VANDELS galaxies. We find that the $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm abs}$ and $\xi_{ion}$ parameters increase towards low-mass, blue UV-continuum slopes and strong Ly$\alpha$ emitting galaxies, and both are just slightly higher-than-average for the UV-faintest galaxies in the sample. Potential Lyman Continuum Emitters (LCEs) and selected Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) show systematically higher $\xi_{ion}$ ($\log \xi_{ion}$ (Hz\erg) $\approx 25.38, 25.41$) than non-LCEs and non-LAEs ($\log \xi_{ion}$ (Hz\erg) $\approx 25.18, 25.14$) at similar UV magnitudes. This indicates very young underlying stellar populations ($\approx 10~{\rm Myr}$) at relatively low metallicities ($\approx 0.2~{\rm Z_{\odot}}$). The FUV non-ionizing spectra of potential LCEs is characterized by very blue UV slopes ($\leq -2$), enhanced Ly$\alpha$ emission ($\leq -25$A), strong UV nebular lines (e.g., high CIV1550/CIII]1908 $\geq 0.75$ ratios), and weak absorption lines ($\leq 1$A). The latter suggests the existence of low gas-column-density channels in the interstellar medium which enables the escape of ionizing photons. Most of the hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) was rapidly ionized at high-redshifts. While observations have established that reionization occurred, observational constraints on the emissivity of ionizing photons at high-redshift remains elusive. Here, we present a new analysis of the Low-redshift Lyman Continuum Survey (LzLCS) and archival observations, a combined sample of 89 star-forming galaxies at z~0.3 with Hubble Space Telescope observations of their ionizing continua (or Lyman Continuum, LyC). We find a strong (6$\sigma$ significant) inverse correlation between the continuum slope at 1550\r{A} (defined as F$_\lambda\propto\lambda^{\beta}$) and both the LyC escape fraction (f$_{esc}$) and f$_{esc}$ times the ionizing photon production efficiency ($\xi_{ ion}$). On average, galaxies with redder continuum slopes have smaller f$_{esc}$ than galaxies with bluer slopes due to higher dust attenuation. More than 5% (20%) of the LyC emission escapes galaxies with $\beta$<-2.1 (-2.6). We find strong correlations between $\beta$ and the gas-phase ionization ([OIII]/[OII] flux ratio; at 7.5$\sigma$ significance), galaxy stellar mass (at 5.9$\sigma$), the gas-phase metallicity (at 4.6$\sigma$), and the observed FUV absolute magnitude (M$_{UV}$ at 3.4$\sigma$). Using previous observations of $\beta$ at high-redshift, we estimate the evolution of f$_{esc}$ with both $z$ and M$_{UV}$. The LzLCS suggest that fainter and lower mass galaxies dominate the ionizing photon budget at higher redshift, possibly due to their rapidly evolving metal and dust content. Finally, we use our correlation between $\beta$ and f$_{ esc}\times\xi_{ion}$ to predict the ionizing emissivity of galaxies during the epoch of reionization. Our estimated emissivities match IGM observations, and suggest that star-forming galaxies emit sufficient LyC photons into the IGM to exceed recombinations near redshifts of 7-8., Comment: 14 pages plus appendix. Gaseous flows inside and outside galaxies are key to understanding galaxy evolution, as they regulate their star formation activity across cosmic time. We study the ISM kinematics of 330 CIII or HeII emitters, using far-UV ISM absorption lines detected in the VANDELS spectra. These galaxies span a broad range of stellar masses M$_\ast$ from $10^8$ to $10^{11}$ M$_\odot$, and SFRs from 1 to 500 M$_\odot$/yr, in the redshift range between 2 and 5. We find that the bulk ISM velocity v$_{ism}$ is globally in outflow, with v$_{ism}$ of -60 $\pm$ 10 km/s for low ionization gas traced by SiII 1260 Angstrom, CII 1334, SiII 1526, and AlII 1670, and v$_{ism}$ of -160 $\pm$ 30 and -170 $\pm$ 30 km/s for higher ionization gas traced respectively by AlIII 1854-1862 and SiIV 1393-1402. Interestingly, BPASS models are able to better reproduce the stellar continuum around the SiIV doublet than other stellar population templates. For individual galaxies, $34\%$ of the sample has a positive ISM velocity shift, almost double the fraction reported at lower redshifts. Comparing v$_{ism}$ to the host galaxies properties, we find no significant correlations with M$_\ast$ or SFR, and only a marginally significant dependence (at $\sim 2\sigma$) on morphology-related parameters, with slightly higher velocities in galaxies of smaller size (probed by the equivalent radius), higher concentration, and higher SFR surface density. The outflows are consistent with models of accelerating, momentum-driven winds, with densities decreasing towards the outskirts. Our moderately lower ISM velocities compared to those found in similar studies at lower redshifts suggest that inflows and internal turbulence might play an increased role at $z>2$. We estimate mass outflow rates comparable to the SFRs of the galaxies, and an average escape velocity of 625 km/s, suggesting that most of the ISM will remain bound to the galaxy halo., Comment: 24 pages, 2 tables and 20 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. The circumgalactic medium (CGM) is the location where the interplay between large-scale outflows and accretion onto galaxies occurs. Metals in different ionization states flowing between the circumgalactic and intergalactic mediums are affected by large galactic outflows and low-ionization state inflowing gas. Observational studies on their spatial distribution and their relation with galaxy properties may provide important constraints on models of galaxy formation and evolution. To provide new insights into the spatial distribution of the circumgalactic of star-forming galaxies, we select a sample of 238 close pairs at $1.5 < z <4.5$ ($\langle z\rangle\sim$2.6) from the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey. We then generate composite spectra by co-adding spectra of $background$ galaxies that provide different sight-lines across the CGM to examine the spatial distribution of the gas located around these galaxies and investigate possible correlations between the strength of the low- and high-ionization absorption features with different galaxy properties. We detect C II, Si II, Si IV and C IV) up to separations $\langle b \rangle=$ 172 kpc and 146 kpc. Our $W_{0}$ radial profiles suggest a potential redshift evolution for the CGM gas content producing these absorptions. We find a correlation between C II and C IV with star formation rate, stellar mass and trends with galaxy size estimated by the effective radius and azimuthal angle. Galaxies with high star formation rate show stronger C IV absorptions compared with star-forming galaxies with low SFR and low stellar mass. These results could be explained by stronger outflows, softer radiation fields unable to ionize high-ionization state lines or by the galactic fountain scenario where metal-rich gas ejected from previous star-formation episodes fall back to the galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Finding reliable indicators of Lyman continuum (LyC) photon leakage from galaxies is essential in order to infer their escape fraction in the epoch of reionisation, where direct measurements of LyC flux are impossible. To this end, here we investigate whether strong C IV $\lambda \lambda 1548,1550$ emission in the rest-frame UV spectra of galaxies traces conditions ripe for ample production and escape of LyC photons. We compile a sample of 19 star-forming galaxies in the redshift range $z=3.1-4.6$ from the VANDELS survey that exhibit strong C IV emission, producing a stacked spectrum where all major rest-UV emission lines are clearly detected. Best-fitting spectral energy distribution models containing both stellar and nebular emission suggest the need for low stellar metallicities ($Z=0.1-0.2\,Z_\odot$), young stellar ages ($\log(\rm{age/yr}) = 6.1-6.5$), a high ionisation parameter ($\log U = -2$) and little to no dust attenuation ($E(B-V)=0.00-0.01$). However, these models are unable to fully reproduce the observed C IV and He II line strengths. We find that the Ly$\alpha$ line in the stacked spectrum is strong and peaks close to the systemic velocity, features that are indicative of significant LyC photon leakage along the line-of-sight. The covering fractions of low-ionisation interstellar absorption lines are also low implying LyC escape fraction in the range $\approx 0.05-0.30$, with signatures of outflowing gas. Finally, C IV/C III] ratios of >0.75 for a subset of individual galaxies with reliable detections of both lines are also consistent with physical conditions that enable significant LyC leakage. Overall, we report that multiple spectroscopic indicators of LyC leakage are present in the stacked spectrum of strong C IV emitting galaxies, potentially making C IV an important tracer of LyC photon escape at $z>6$., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, published in MNRAS

The properties that govern the production and escape of hydrogen ionizing photons (Lyman continuum, LyC; with energies >13.6 eV) in star-forming galaxies are still poorly understood, but they are key to identifying and characterizing the sources that reionized the Universe. Here we empirically explore the relationship between the hardness of ionizing radiation and the LyC leakage in a large sample of low-$z$ star-forming galaxies from the recent Hubble Space Telescope Low-$z$ Lyman Continuum Survey. Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey stacks and deep XShooter observations, we investigate the hardness of the ionizing spectra ($Q_{\rm He^+}/Q_{\rm H}$) between 54.4 eV (He$^{+}$) and 13.6 eV (H) from the optical recombination lines HeII 4686A and H$\beta$ 4861A for galaxies with LyC escape fractions spanning a wide range, $f_{\rm esc} \rm (LyC) \simeq 0 - 90\%$. We find that the observed intensity of HeII/H$\beta$ is primarily driven by variations in the metallicity, but is not correlated with LyC leakage. Both very strong ($ \simeq 0.5$) and nonleakers ($ < f_{\rm esc} \rm (LyC) > \simeq 0$) present similar observed intensities of HeII/H$\beta$ at comparable metallicity, between $\simeq 0.01$ and $\simeq 0.02$ for $12 + \log({\rm O/H}) > 8.0$ and $<8.0$, respectively. Our results demonstrate that $Q_{\rm He^+}/Q_{\rm H}$ does not correlate with $f_{\rm esc} \rm (LyC)$, which implies that strong LyC emitters do not show harder ionizing spectra than nonleakers at similar metallicity., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 1 tables. We investigate the ionizing properties of the pair of bright Ly$\alpha$ emitting galaxies BDF521 and BDF2195 at z=7.012 in order to constrain their contribution to the formation of the BDF "reionized bubble". We obtain constraints on UV emission lines (CIV$\lambda 1548$ doublet, HeII$\lambda 1640$, OIII]$\lambda 1660$ doublet, and CIII]$\lambda 1909$ doublet) from deep VLT-XSHOOTER observations and compare them to those available for other high-redshift objects, and to models with mixed stellar and AGN emission. We use this spectroscopic information together with the photometry available in the field to constrain the physical properties of the two objects using the spectro-photometric fitting code BEAGLE. We do not detect any significant emission at the expected position of UV lines, with 3$\sigma$ upper limits of EW$\lesssim$2-7 AA rest-frame. We find that the two objects have lower CIII] emission than expected on the basis of the correlation between the Ly$\alpha$ and CIII] EWs. The EW limits on CIV and HeII emission exclude pure AGN templates at $\sim2-3\sigma$ significance, and only models with a $\lesssim$40% AGN contribution are compatible with the observations. The two objects are found to be relatively young ($\sim$20-30 Myrs) and metal-poor ($\lesssim 0.3 Z_{\odot}$) with stellar masses of a few $10^9M_{\odot}$. Their production rate of hydrogen ionizing photons per intrinsic UV luminosity is log($\xi_{ion}^*$/Hz erg$^{-1}$)=25.02-25.26, consistent with values typically found in high-redshift galaxies, but more than twice lower than values measured in $z>$7 galaxies with strong CIII] and/or optical line emission ($\simeq$25.6-25.7). The two BDF emitters have no evidence of higher than average ionizing capabilities and are not capable of reionizing their surroundings by their own means under realistic assumptions on the escape fraction of ionizing photons. We present a study designed to measure the average LyC escape fraction ($\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle$) of star-forming galaxies at z=3.5. We assemble a sample of 148 galaxies from the VANDELS survey at $3.35\leq z_{\rm spec}\leq3.95$, selected to minimize line-of-sight contamination of their photometry. For this sample, we use ultra-deep, ground-based, $U-$band imaging and HST $V-$band imaging to robustly measure the distribution of $\mathcal{R_{\rm obs}}$ $=(L_{\rm LyC}/L_{\rm UV})_{\rm obs}$. We then model the distribution as a function of $\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle$, carefully accounting for attenuation by dust, and the IGM (and CGM). A maximum likelihood fit to the $\mathcal{R_{\rm obs}}$ distribution returns a best-fitting value of $\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle =0.07\pm0.02$, a result confirmed using an alternative Bayesian inference technique (both exclude $\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle=0.0$ at $> 3\sigma$). By splitting our sample in two, we find evidence that $\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle$ is positively correlated with Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width, with high and low sub-samples returning best fits of $\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle=0.12^{+0.06}_{-0.04}$ and $\langle f_{\rm esc} \rangle=0.02^{+0.02}_{-0.01}$, respectively. In contrast, we find evidence that $\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle$ is anti-correlated with intrinsic UV luminosity and UV dust attenuation; with low UV luminosity and dust attenuation sub-samples returning best fits in the range $0.10 \leq \langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle \leq 0.22$. We do not find evidence for a clear correlation between $f_{\rm esc}$ and galaxy stellar mass, suggesting it is not a primary indicator of leakage. Low-metallicity, compact starburst galaxies referred to as Green Peas (GPs) provide a unique window to study galactic evolution across cosmic epochs. In this work, we present new deep optical spectra for three GPs from OSIRIS at the 10m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), which are studied using a state-of-the-art methodology. A stellar population synthesis is conducted with 1098 spectral templates. The methodology succeeds at characterising stellar populations from 0.5 Myrs to 10 Gyrs. The light distribution shows a large red excess from a single population with $log\left(age\right) > 8.5yr$ in the GP sample analysed. This points towards an incomplete characterisation of the gas luminosity, whose continuum already accounts between $7.4\%$ and $27.6\%$ in the galaxy sample. The emission spectra are fitted with the largest Bayesian chemical model consisting of a electron temperature, a electron density, the logarithmic extinction coefficient and eleven ionic species under the direct method paradigm. Additionally, building on previous work, we propose a neural networks sampler to constrain the effective temperature and ionization parameter of each source from photoionization model grids. Finally, we combine both methodologies into a 16-dimensional model, which for the first time, simultaneously explores the direct method and photoionization parameter spaces. Both techniques consistently indicate a low metallicity gas, $7.76<12+log\left(\frac{O}{H}\right)<8.04$, ionized by strong radiation fields, in agreement with previous works., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS on 14th of October 2021

We present Lyman continuum (LyC) radiation escape fraction $f_{\rm{esc}}$ measurements for 183 spectroscopically confirmed star-forming galaxies in the redshift range $3.11 < z < 3.53$ in the \textit{Chandra} Deep Field South. We use ground-based imaging to measure $f_{\rm{esc}}$, and use ground- and space-based photometry to derive galaxy physical properties using spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. We additionally derive [O III]+H$\beta$ equivalent widths (that fall in the observed K band) by including nebular emission in the SED fitting. After removing foreground contaminants, we report the discovery of 11 new candidate LyC leakers, with absolute LyC escape fractions, $f_{\rm{esc}}$ in the range $0.14-0.85$. From non-detections, we place $1\sigma$ upper limits of $f_{\rm{esc}}<0.12$, where the Lyman-break selected galaxies have $f_{\rm{esc}} < 0.11$ and `blindly' discovered galaxies with no prior photometric selection have $f_{\rm{esc}}<0.13$. We find a slightly higher $1\sigma$ limit of $f_{\rm{esc}}<0.20$ for extreme emission line galaxies with rest-frame [O III]+H$\beta$ equivalent widths $>300$A. For candidate LyC leakers, we find a weak negative correlation between $f_{\rm{esc}}$ and galaxy stellar masses, no correlation between $f_{\rm{esc}}$ specific star-formation rates (sSFRs) and a positive correlation between $f_{\rm{esc}}$ and EW$_0$([O III]+H$\beta$). The weak/no correlations between stellar mass and sSFRs may be explained by misaligned viewing angles and/or non-coincident timescales of starburst activity and periods of high $f_{\rm{esc}}$. Alternatively, escaping radiation may predominantly occur in highly localised star-forming regions, or $f_{\rm{esc}}$ measurements may be impacted by stochasticity of the intervening neutral medium, obscuring any global trends with galaxy properties. We present a rest-frame UV-optical stacked spectrum representative of massive quiescent galaxies at $1.010.8$. The stack is constructed using VANDELS survey data, combined with new KMOS observations. We apply two independent full-spectral-fitting approaches, measuring a total metallicity, [Z/H]=$-0.13\pm0.08$ with Bagpipes, and [Z/H]=$0.04\pm0.14$ with Alf, a fall of $\sim0.2-0.3$ dex compared with the local Universe. We also measure an iron abundance, [Fe/H] =$-0.18\pm0.08$, a fall of $\sim0.15$ dex compared with the the local Universe. We measure the alpha enhancement via the magnesium abundance, obtaining [Mg/Fe]=$0.23\pm$0.12, consistent with similar-mass galaxies in the local Universe, indicating no evolution in the average alpha enhancement of log$(M_*/\rm{M_\odot})=11$ quiescent galaxies over the last $\sim8$ Gyr. This suggests the very high alpha enhancements recently reported for several bright $z\sim1-2$ quiescent galaxies are due to their extreme masses, log$(M_*/\rm{M_\odot})\gtrsim11.5$, rather than being typical of the $z\gtrsim1$ population. The metallicity evolution we observe with redshift (falling [Z/H], [Fe/H], constant [Mg/Fe]) is consistent with recent studies. We recover a mean stellar age of $2.5^{+0.6}_{-0.4}$ Gyr, corresponding to a formation redshift, $z_\rm{form}=2.4^{+0.6}_{-0.3}$. Recent studies have obtained varying average formation redshifts for $z\gtrsim1$ massive quiescent galaxies, and, as these studies report consistent metallicities, we identify different star-formation-history models as the most likely cause. Larger spectroscopic samples from upcoming ground-based instruments will provide precise constraints on ages and metallicities at $z\gtrsim1$. We study the mean properties of a large representative sample of 217 galaxies showing CIII] emission at $2

We use VANDELS spectroscopic data overlapping with the $\simeq$7 Ms Chandra Deep Field South survey to extend studies of high-mass X-ray binary systems (XRBs) in 301 normal star-forming galaxies in the redshift range $3 < z < 5.5$. Our analysis evaluates correlations between X-ray luminosities ($L_X$), star formation rates (SFR) and stellar metallicities ($Z_\star$) to higher redshifts and over a wider range in galaxy properties than hitherto. Using a stacking analysis performed in bins of both redshift and SFR for sources with robust spectroscopic redshifts without AGN signatures, we find convincing evolutionary trends in the ratio $L_X$/SFR to the highest redshifts probed, with a stronger trend for galaxies with lower SFRs. Combining our data with published samples at lower redshift, the evolution of $L_X$/SFR to $z\simeq5$ proceeds as $(1 + z)^{1.03 \pm 0.02}$. Using stellar metallicities derived from photospheric absorption features in our spectroscopic data, we confirm indications at lower redshifts that $L_X$/SFR is stronger for metal-poor galaxies. We use semi-analytic models to show that metallicity dependence of $L_X$/SFR alone may not be sufficient to fully explain the observed redshift evolution of X-ray emission from high-mass XRBs, particularly for galaxies with SFR $<30$ $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. We speculate that the discrepancy may arise due to reduced overall stellar ages in the early Universe leading to higher $L_X$/SFR for the same metallicity. We use our data to define the redshift-dependent contribution of XRBs to the integrated X-ray luminosity density and, in comparison with models, find that the contribution of high-mass XRBs to the cosmic X-ray background at $z>6$ may be $\gtrsim 0.25$ dex higher than previously estimated., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, Published in MNRAS

Local star-forming galaxies show properties that are thought to differ from galaxies in the early Universe. Among them, the ionizing stellar populations and the gas geometry make the recipes designed to derive chemical abundances from nebular emission lines to differ from those calibrated in the Local Universe. A sample of 1969 Extreme Emission Line Galaxies (EELGs) at a redshift 0 < z < 0.49, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to be local analogues of high-redshift galaxies, was used to analyze their most prominent emission lines and to derive total oxygen abundances and nitrogen-to-oxygen ratios following the direct method in the ranges 7.7 < 12+log(O/H) < 8.6 and -1.8 < log(N/O) < -0.8. They allow us to obtain new empirically calibrated strong-line methods and to evaluate other recipes based on photoionization models that can be later used for a chemical analysis of actively star-forming galaxies in very early stages of galaxy evolution. Our new relations are in agreement with others found for smaller samples of objects at higher redshifts. When compared with other relations calibrated in the local Universe, they differ when the employed strong-line ratio depends on the hardness of the ionizing radiation, such as O32 or Ne3O2, but they do not when the main dependence is on the ionization parameter, such as S23. In the case of strong-line ratios depending on [NII] lines, the derivation of O/H becomes very uncertain due to the very high N/O values derived in this sample, above all in the low-metallicity regime. Finally, we adapt the bayesian-like code HII-Chi-mistry for the conditions found in this kind of galaxies and we prove that it can be used to derive within errors both O/H and N/O, in consistency with the direct method ., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures. We provide a new method to derive heavy element abundances based on the unique suite of nebular lines in the mid- to far-infrared (IR) range. Using grids of photo-ionisation models that cover a wide range in O/H and N/O abundances, and ionisation parameter, our code HII-Chi-mistry-IR (HCm-IR) provides model-based abundances based on extinction free and temperature insensitive tracers, two significant advantages over optical diagnostics. The code is probed using a sample of 56 galaxies observed with $Spitzer$ and $Herschel$ covering a wide range in metallicity, $7.2 \lesssim 12+\log(O/H) \lesssim 8.9$. The IR model-based metallicities obtained are robust within a scatter of 0.03 dex when the hydrogen recombination lines, which are typically faint transitions in the IR range, are not available. When compared to the optical abundances obtained with the direct method, model-based methods, and strong-line calibrations, HCm-IR estimates show a typical dispersion of ~0.2 dex, in line with previous studies comparing IR and optical abundances, a do not introduce a noticeable systematic above $12+\log(O/H) \gtrsim 7.6$. This accuracy can be achieved using the lines [SIV]$_{10.5 \mu m}$, [SIII]$_{18.7,33.5 \mu m}$, [NeIII]$_{15.6 \mu m}$ and [NeII]$_{12.8 \mu m}$. Additionally, HCm-IR provides an independent N/O measurement when the [OIII]$_{52,88 \mu m}$ and [NIII]$_{57 \mu m}$ transitions are measured, and therefore the derived abundances in this case do not rely on particular assumptions in the N/O ratio. Large uncertainties (~0.4 dex) may affect the abundance determinations of galaxies at sub- or over-solar metallicities when a solar-like N/O ratio is adopted. We present results from the NIRVANDELS survey investigating the gas-phase metallicity ($\mathrm{Z}_{\mathrm{gas}}$, tracing O/H) and stellar metallicity ($Z_{\star}$, tracing Fe/H) of 33 star-forming galaxies at redshifts $2.95 < z < 3.80$. Based on a combined analysis of deep optical and near-IR spectra, tracing the rest-frame far ultraviolet and rest-frame optical respectively, we present the first simultaneous determination of the stellar and gas-phase mass-metallicity relationships (MZRs) at $z\simeq3.4$. In both cases, we find that metallicity increases with increasing stellar mass ($M_{\star}$), and that the power-law slope at $M_{\star} \lesssim 10^{10} \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ of both MZRs scales as $Z \propto M_{\star}^{0.3}$. Comparing the stellar and gas-phase MZRs, we present direct evidence for super-solar O/Fe ratios (i.e., $\alpha$-enhancement) at $z>3$, finding $\mathrm{(O/Fe)}\simeq (2.54 \pm 0.38) \times \mathrm{(O/Fe)}_{\odot}$, with no clear dependence on $M_{\star}$., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, MNRAS accepted

Aim. Our aim is to analyse the variance of the Inter-Galactic Medium transmission (IGM) by studying this parameter in the rest-frame UV spectra of a large sample of high redshift galaxies. Method. We make use of the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey and the VANDELS public survey to have an insight into the far UV spectrum of $2.7

VANDELS is an ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey designed to build a sample of high signal to noise, medium resolution spectra of galaxies at redshift between 1 and 6.5. Here we present the final Public Data Release of the VANDELS Survey, comprising 2087 redshift measurements. We give a detailed description of sample selection, observations and data reduction procedures. The final catalogue reaches a target selection completeness of 40% at iAB = 25. The high Signal to Noise ratio of the spectra (above 7 in 80% of the spectra) and the dispersion of 2.5{\AA} allowed us to measure redshifts with high precision, the redshift measurement success rate reaching almost 100%. Together with the redshift catalogue and the reduced spectra, we also provide optical mid-IR photometry and physical parameters derived through SED fitting. The observed galaxy sample comprises both passive and star forming galaxies covering a stellar mass range 8.3< Log(M*/Msolar)<11.7. The estimate of stellar metallicities (Z*) of high-z galaxies are of paramount importance in order to understand the complexity of dust effects and the reciprocal interrelations among stellar mass, dust attenuation, stellar age, and metallicity. Finding and elucidating the properties of Lyman-continuum(LyC)-emitting galaxies is an important step for our understanding of cosmic reionization. Although the z - 0.3-0.4 LyC emitters found recently show strong optical emission lines, no consistent quantitative photoionization model taking into account the escape of ionizing photons and inhomogenous interstellar medium (ISM) geometry of these galaxies has yet been constructed. We hence construct one- and two-zone photoionization models accounting for the observed LyC escape, which we compare to the observed emission line measurements. We find that one-zone density-bounded photoionization models cannot reproduce the emission lines of the LyC leakers because they systematically underpredict the lines of species of low ionization potential, as [OI] and [SII]. Introducing a two-zone model, with differing ionization parameter and a variable covering fraction and where one of the zones is density-bounded, we show that the observed emission line ratios and escape fractions of the LyC emitters are well reproduced. The [OI] excess, which is observed in some LyC leakers, can be naturally explained in this model, e.g., by emission from low-ionization and low-filling-factor gas. LyC emitters with a high escape fraction (fesc > 38%) are deficient both in [OI]6300A and in [SII]6716,6731A. We also confirm that a [SII] deficiency can be used to select LyC emitter candidates. Finally, we find indications for a possible dichotomy in terms of escape mechanisms for LyC photons between galaxies with relatively low (fesc < 10%) and higher escape fractions. We conclude that two-zone photoionization models are sufficient and required to explain the observed emission line properties of z - 0.3-0.4 LyC emitters. We present the results of the spectroscopic follow up of the QUBRICS survey. The selection method is based on a machine learning approach applied to photometric catalogs, covering an area of $\sim$ 12,400 deg$^2$ in the Southern Hemisphere. The spectroscopic observations started in 2018 and identified 55 new, high-redshift (z>=2.5), bright (i<=18) QSOs, with the catalog published in late 2019. Here we report the current status of the survey, bringing the total number of bright QSOs at z<=2.5 identified by QUBRICS to 224. The success rate of the QUBRICS selection method, in its most recent training, is estimated to be 68%. The predominant contaminant turns out to be lower-z QSOs at z<2.5. This survey provides a unique sample of bright QSOs at high-z available for a number of cosmological investigations. In particular, carrying out the redshift drift measurements (Sandage Test) in the Southern Hemisphere, using the HIRES spectrograph at the 39m ELT, appears to be possible with less than 2500 hours of observations spread over 30 targets in 25 years., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS, 24 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables

We want to investigate whether we can use Lyalpha emission to obtain information on the environment properties and whether Lyalpha emitters show different characteristics as a function of their environment. We estimated local densities in the VANDELS Chandra Deep Field-South (CDFS) and UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) fields, by using a three-dimensional algorithm which works in the RA-dec-redshift space. We selected a sample of 131 Lyalpha-emitting galaxies (EW(Lyalpha)>0 A), unbiased with respect to environmental density, to study their location with respect to the over- or under-dense environment. We identify 13 (proto)cluster candidates in the CDFS and nine in the UDS at 2

Using new VLT/XShooter spectral observations we analyse the physical properties of five z~0.3-0.4 confirmed LyC leakers. Strong resonant MgII 2796,2803 emission lines (I(2796,2803)/I(Hbeta)=10-38 per cent) and non-resonant FeII* 2612,2626 emission lines are observed in spectra of five and three galaxies, respectively. We find high electron densities Ne~400cm-3, significantly higher than in typical low-z, but comparable to those measured in z~2-3 star-forming galaxies. The galaxies have a mean value of logN/O=-1.16, close to the maximum values found for star-forming (SF) galaxies in the metallicity range of 12+logO/H=7.7-8.1. All 11 low-z LyC emitting galaxies found by Izotov et al. (2016, 2018), including the ones considered in the present study, are characterised by high EW(Hbeta)~200-400A, high ionisation parameter (log(U)=-2.5 to -1.7), high average ionising photon production efficiency \xi= 10^{25.54} Hz erg-1 and hard ionising radiation. On the BPT diagram we find the same offset of our leakers from low-$z$ main-sequence SFGs as that for local analogues of LBGs and extreme SF galaxies at z~2-3. We confirm the effectiveness of the HeI emission lines diagnostics proposed by Izotov et al. (2017) in searching for LyC leaker candidates and find that their intensity ratios correspond to those in a median with low neutral hydrogen column density N(HI)=10^{17}-5x10^{17} cm-2 that permit leakage of LyC radiation, likely due to their density-bounded HII regions., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

Star formation rate (SFR) measurements at z>4 have relied mostly on rest-frame far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations. The corrections for dust attenuation based on IRX-$\beta$ relation are highly uncertain and are still debated in the literature. Hence, rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) observations are necessary to constrain the dust-obscured component of the SFR. We present results from the KMOS Lens-Amplified Spectroscopic Survey (KLASS), an ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) large program using gravitational lensing to study the spatially resolved kinematics of 44 star-forming galaxies at 0.61), we find a weak increase or flat trend. We investigate the relation between the rest-frame UV clumpiness of galaxies and their global kinematic properties. We find no clear trend between the clumpiness and the velocity dispersion and $\upsilon_{rot}/\sigma_0$. This could suggest that the kinematic properties of galaxies evolve after the clumps formed in the galaxy disk or that the clumps can form in different physical conditions., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures. The molecular gas content of normal galaxies at z>4 is poorly constrained, because the commonly used molecular gas tracers become hard to detect. We use the [CII]158um luminosity, recently proposed as a molecular gas tracer, to estimate the molecular gas content in a large sample of main-sequence star-forming galaxies at z=4.4-5.9, with a median stellar mass of 10^9.7 Msun, drawn from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE) survey. The agreement between molecular gas masses derived from [CII] luminosity, dynamical mass, and rest-frame 850um luminosity, extrapolated from the rest-frame 158um continuum, supports [CII] as a reliable tracer of molecular gas in our sample. We find a continuous decline of the molecular gas depletion timescale from z=0 to z=5.9, which reaches a mean value of (4.6+/-0.8)x10^8 yr at z~5.5, only a factor of 2-3 shorter than in present-day galaxies. This suggests a mild enhancement of star formation efficiency toward high redshifts, unless the molecular gas fraction significantly increases. Our estimates show that the rise in molecular gas fraction as reported previously, flattens off above z~3.7 to achieve a mean value of 63%+/-3 over z=4.4-5.9. This redshift evolution of the gas fraction is in line with the one of the specific star formation rate. We use multi-epoch abundance matching to follow the gas fraction evolution over cosmic time of progenitors of z=0 Milky Way-like galaxies in 10^13 Msun halos and of more massive z=0 galaxies in 10^14 Msun halos. Interestingly, the former progenitors show a monotonic decrease of the gas fraction with cosmic time, while the latter show a constant gas fraction from z=5.9 to z~2 and a decrease at z<2. We discuss three possible effects, namely outflows, halt of gas supplying, and over-efficient star formation, which may jointly contribute to the gas fraction plateau of the latter massive galaxies., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables. We present dust attenuation properties of spectroscopically confirmed star forming galaxies on the main sequence at a redshift of ~4.4-5.8. Our analyses are based on the far infrared continuum observations of 118 galaxies at rest-frame 158{\mu}m obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE). We study the connection between the ultraviolet (UV) spectral slope ($\beta$), stellar mass (M_*), and infrared excess (IRX=L_IR/L_UV). Twenty-three galaxies are individually detected in the continuum at >3.5 sigma significance. We perform a stacking analysis using both detections and nondetections to study the average dust attenuation properties at z~4.4-5.8. The individual detections and stacks show that the IRX-$\beta$ relation at z~5 is consistent with a steeper dust attenuation curve than typically found at lower redshifts (z<4). The attenuation curve is similar to or even steeper than that of the extinction curve of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). This systematic change of the IRX-$\beta$ relation as a function of redshift suggests an evolution of dust attenuation properties at z>4. Similarly, we find that our galaxies have lower IRX values, up to 1dex on average, at a fixed mass compared to previously studied IRX-M_* relations at z<4, albeit with significant scatter. This implies a lower obscured fraction of star formation than at lower redshifts. Our results suggest that dust properties of UV-selected star forming galaxies at z>4 are characterised by (i) a steeper attenuation curve than at z<4, and (ii) a rapidly decreasing dust obscured fraction of star formation as a function of redshift. Nevertheless, even among this UV-selected sample, massive galaxies (log M_*/$M_\odot$>10) at z~5-6 already exhibit an obscured fraction of star formation of ~45%, indicating a rapid build-up of dust during the epoch of reionization., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. We explore X-ray emission from a sample of 18 He II 1640 emitting star-forming galaxies at z ~ 2.3-3.6 from the VANDELS survey in the Chandra Deep Field South, to set constraints on the role of X-ray sources in powering the He II emission. We find that 4 He II emitters have tentative detections with S/N ~ 2 and have X-ray luminosities, L_X = 1.5-4.9 x 10^41 erg/s. The stacked luminosity of all 18 He II emitters is 2.6 x 10^41 erg/s, and that of a subset of 13 narrow He II emitters (FHWM(He II) < 1000 km/s) is 3.1 x 10^41 erg/s. We also measure stacked L_X for non-He II emitters through bootstrapping of matched samples, and find L_X = 2.5 x 10^41 erg/s, which is not significantly different from L_X measured for He II emitters. The L_X per star-formation rate for He II emitters (log (L_X/SFR) ~ 40.0) and non-emitters (log (L_X/SFR) ~ 39.9) are also comparable and in line with the redshift evolution and metallicity dependence predicted by models. Due to the non-significant difference between the X-ray emission from galaxies with and without He II, we conclude that X-ray binaries or weak or obscured AGNs are unlikely to be the dominant producers of He II ionising photons in VANDELS star-forming galaxies at z ~ 3. Given the comparable physical properties of both He II emitters and non-emitters reported previously, alternative He II ionising mechanisms such as localised low-metallicity stellar populations, Pop-III stars, etc. may need to be explored., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the ionised gas kinematics, physical properties and chemical abundances of SDSS$J$142947, a Green Pea galaxy at redshift z$\sim$0.17 with strong, double-peak Ly$\alpha$ emission and indirect evidence of Lyman continuum (LyC) leakage. Using high-dispersion spectroscopy, we perform a multi-component analysis of emission-line profiles. Our model consistently fits all lines as a narrow component with intrinsic velocity dispersion $\sigma \sim$40 km s$^{-1}$, and two broader blue-shifted components with $\sigma \sim$90 km s$^{-1}$ and $\sim$250 km s$^{-1}$. We find electron densities and temperatures, ionisation conditions, and direct O/H and N/O abundances for each component. A highly ionised, metal-poor, young and compact starburst dominates narrow emission, showing evidence of hard radiation fields and elevated N/O. The blue-shifted broader components are consistent with highly turbulent, possibly clumpy ionised gas at the base of a strong photoionised outflow, which accounts for $\gtrsim$50% of the integrated emission-line fluxes. The outflow is dense and metal-enriched compared to the HII regions, with expansion velocities larger than those obtained from UV interstellar absorption lines under standard assumptions. Some of these metals may be able to escape, with outflows loading factors comparable to those found in high-$z$ galaxies of similar SFR/Area. Our findings depict a two-stage starburst picture; hard radiation fields from young star clusters illuminate a turbulent and clumpy ISM that has been eroded by SNe feedback. While UV data suggest an extended Ly$\alpha$ halo with high average HI column density, LyC photons could only escape from SDSS$J$142947 through low HI density channels or filaments in the ISM approaching density-bounded conditions, traced by outflowing gas., Comment: 23 pages, 21 figures. We present the physical extent of [CII] 158um line-emitting gas from 46 star-forming galaxies at z=4-6 from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate CII at Early Times (ALPINE). Using exponential profile fits, we measure the effective radius of the [CII] line (r_e,[CII]) for individual galaxies and compare them with the rest-frame ultra-violet (UV) continuum (r_e,UV) from Hubble Space Telescope images. The effective radius r_e,[CII] exceeds r_e,UV by factors of ~2-3 and the ratio of r_e,[CII]/r_e,UV increases as a function of M_star. We do not find strong evidence that [CII] line, the rest-frame UV, and FIR continuum are always displaced over ~ 1-kpc scale from each other. We identify 30% of isolated ALPINE sources as having an extended [CII] component over 10-kpc scales detected at 4.1$\sigma$-10.9$\sigma$ beyond the size of rest-frame UV and far-infrared (FIR) continuum. One object has tentative rotating features up to ~10-kpc, where the 3D model fit shows the rotating [CII]-gas disk spread over 4 times larger than the rest-frame UV-emitting region. Galaxies with the extended [CII] line structure have high star-formation rate (SFR), stellar mass (M_star), low Lya equivalent-width, and more blue-shifted (red-shifted) rest-frame UV metal absorption (Lya line), as compared to galaxies without such extended [CII] structures. Although we cannot rule out the possibility that a selection bias towards luminous objects may be responsible for such trends, the star-formation driven outflow also explains all these trends.
