1. Tutor CoPilot: A Human-AI Approach for Scaling Real-Time Expertise. EdWorkingPaper No. 24-1054

Abstract

Generative AI, particularly Language Models (LMs), has the potential to transform real-world domains with societal impact, particularly where access to experts is limited. For example, in education, training novice educators with expert guidance is important for effectiveness but expensive, creating significant barriers to improving education quality at scale. This challenge disproportionately hurts students from under-served communities, who stand to gain the most from high-quality education and are most likely to be taught by inexperienced educators. We introduce Tutor CoPilot, a novel Human-AI approach that leverages a model of expert thinking to provide expert-like guidance to tutors as they tutor. This study presents the first randomized controlled trial of a Human-AI system in live tutoring, involving 900 tutors and 1,800 K-12 students from historically under-served communities. Following a preregistered analysis plan, we find that students working on mathematics with tutors randomly assigned to have access to Tutor CoPilot are 4 percentage points (p.p.) more likely to master topics (p<0.01). Notably, students of lower-rated tutors experienced the greatest benefit, improving mastery by 9 p.p. relative to the control group. We find that Tutor CoPilot costs only $20 per-tutor annually, based on the tutors' usage during the study. We analyze 550,000+ messages using classifiers to identify pedagogical strategies, and find that tutors with access to Tutor CoPilot are more likely to use strategies that foster student understanding (e.g., asking guiding questions) and less likely to give away the answer to the student, aligning with high-quality teaching practices. Tutor interviews qualitatively highlight how Tutor CoPilot's guidance helps them to respond to student needs, though tutors flag common issues in Tutor CoPilot, such as generating suggestions that are not grade-level appropriate. Altogether, our study of Tutor CoPilot demonstrates how Human-AI systems can scale expertise in real-world domains, bridge gaps in skills and create a future where high-quality education is accessible to all students. 2. How and Why Racial Isolation Affects Education Costs & the Provision of Equal Educational Opportunity. EdWorkingPaper No. 24-1047

Abstract

This article provides a review of prior empirical work exploring whether and to what extent school district racial composition affects the costs associated with providing equal educational opportunity to achieve a common set of outcomes. This prior work mainly involves education cost function modeling, on several specific states and in an earlier version of our national education cost model. Here, we update the national education cost model and apply a series of tests for selecting the optimal cost model and determining a) whether it is necessary to retain measures of racial composition in the model and b) the effect those measures have on the estimated costs to achieve common outcomes. We find that the optimal model includes an interaction term between % enrollment that is black and population density and that for majority Black enrollment urban districts, the predicted costs per pupil are 20 to 50% higher when using models with this measure than when using models with race neutral alternatives. While changes in cost estimates for these districts are large, aggregate national cost increases from including racial composition are 1.3 to 2.7% in most years.

3. Do the Effects Persist? An Examination of Long-Term Effects after Students Leave Turnaround Schools. EdWorkingPaper No. 24-1041

Abstract

Whole-school reforms have received widespread attention, but a critical limitation of the current literature is the lack of evidence around whether these extensive and costly interventions improve students' long-term outcomes after they leave reform schools. Leveraging Tennessee's statewide turnaround reforms, we use difference-in-differences models to estimate the effect of attending a turnaround middle school on student outcomes in high school, including test scores, attendance, chronic absenteeism, disciplinary actions, drop out, and high school graduation. We find little evidence to support improved long-run student outcomes -- mostly null effects that are nearly zero in magnitude. Our results contribute to a broad call for educational researchers to examine whether school reforms meaningfully affect student outcomes beyond short-term improvements in test scores.

4. School-Based Mental Health Initiatives: Challenges and Considerations for Policymakers

Abstract

The focus of this report is on mental health interventions delivered in K-12 neighborhood public schools. A vast array of commercially available programs, conceptual frameworks, and approaches to school-based mental health are not unanimously recommended, applied, or agreed upon. This poses a challenge to any comprehensive description or evaluation of school-based mental health. Key findings include: (1) There is a lack of high-quality evidence to support school-based mental health initiatives. Rigorous evaluations of universal programs on mental health literacy, awareness, prevention, and screening--and of many social-emotional learning programs--find neither reduced rates of mental health conditions nor improved academic outcomes; (2) The concept of school-based mental health, as currently delivered in typical neighborhood public schools, is incoherent because it primarily serves youth who are not specifically in need of mental health treatment, while insufficiently serving those with mental disorders; (3) While some youth can benefit from high-quality mental health services, universal mental health programs carry underestimated potential harms: directly, through poor-quality care, overdiagnosis, and misallocated spending; and indirectly, through wasted class time and reduced accountability in the mental health and education systems; and (4) Federal agencies responsible for school-based mental health programs provide no meaningful or coordinated guidance on essential questions such as what it means for a program to be effective, what expectations exist in "mental health deserts," and how schools should sort through numerous overlapping initiatives.

5. The Usefulness of ACT Scores in Predicting Achievement and Attrition Among Disadvantaged and Regular Freshmen: A Survey and Study.

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to determine (1) the usefulness of ACT composite scores in assessing and predicting achievement and attrition of disadvantaged and regular freshmen at the University of Nebraska at Omaha during the 1972-73 academic year, and (2) the effectiveness of a special program in keeping low income students in school during their freshman year. Factors considered were: ACT scores, college grades, race, sex, socioeconomic status, financial aid, and employment. It was found that ACT scores were effective predictors of college grades among white students, but not among black students, regardless of income level. ACT scores were also effective predictors of attrition/persistence only among regular students in large samples, college grades being more potent for this purpose. The special program appeared more successful than the regular program in preventing attrition, especially among men and blacks; and receiving financial aid was better than not receiving financial aid. 6. Relationships Between Teachers' Marks, Achievement Test Scores and Aptitude as a Function of Grade, Ethnicity and Sex.

Abstract

Logical predictions about relationships between school aptitude and standardized achievement, aptitude and teachers' grades, and teachers' grades and standardized achievement can be made from the literature. These predictions are that (1) conventional school aptitude measures should predict standardized achievement test scores equally well for boys and girls but better for advantaged than disadvantaged children; (2) teachers' marks are more accurate for girls than for boys when judged against the sexes' standardized achievement test scores; are more accurate for middle-class than for disadvantaged children; and are least accurate for disadvantaged black males; and (3) teachers consistently give girls higher grades than boys but there are no important differences between boys' and girls' achievement when measured by standard achievement tests. The present study was conducted to test the strength of the relationships between pupil aptitude, standardized achievement and teachers' grades and to determine the percent of variance in grade point average accounted for by aptitude and standardized achievement in a representative sample of fifth- and ninth-grade Mexican-American, Black and Anglo students. 7. Teacher Education Candidates' Perceptions of Students.

Abstract

The Ideal Student Description Q-Sort was developed originally as a predictive instrument to determine probable success rates as teachers based upon the teacher candidate's perceptions of students in general. The Q-Sort consists of 84 items describing "openness" and "closedness" in a student and reveals the extent to which a teacher perceives students as either flexible (positive) or rigid (negative) in their interpersonal relationships, and also suggests whether the teacher is more open in his/her perceptions of students. Results of administering the Q-Sort over a four-year period indicated that participants in secondary education programs had a more negative perception of students at the outset, remained more rigid in their views, and tended to become increasingly negative over the four-year period and into their first year of teaching. The opposite was found true for students in the elementary education programs. It became apparent to the investigator that measuring student characteristics for screening purposes at a definite point in time was contrary to the concept of developmental teaching and learning, and that perceptions can be changed over a period of time provided sequences of learning activities are made available (even though secondary teaching candidates are more inflexible). The ISD Q-Sort, instead of becoming a screening device, may evolve into a counseling instrument used in planning the sequence of interpersonal relationships in teacher education indicated by the candidate's individual needs. 9. The Implications of Digital School Quality Information for Neighborhood and School Segregation: Evidence from a Natural Experiment in Los Angeles. EdWorkingPaper No. 24-1012

Abstract

A digital information explosion has transformed cities' residential and educational markets in ways that are still being uncovered. Although urban stratification scholars have increasingly scrutinized whether emerging digital platforms disrupt or reproduce longstanding segregation patterns, direct links between one theoretically important form of digital information--school quality data--and neighborhood and school segregation are rarely drawn. To clarify these dynamics, we leverage an exogenous digital information shock, in which the Los Angeles Times' website revealed measures of a particularly important school quality proxy--schools' value-added effectiveness--for nearly all elementary schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Results suggest that although the information shock had no detectable effects on residential sorting or neighborhood racial segregation, it did exert modest effects on school sorting--particularly for Latino and Asian students--albeit not in ways that materially diminished school racial segregation because the racial compositions of high and low value-added schools were broadly similar both before and after the information shock. We conclude that the urban stratification implications of digital information may be more nuanced than often appreciated, with effects shaped by racial heterogeneity in both constraints and preferences vis-à-vis specific types of information and operating through mechanisms beyond residential segregation.

In our discourse, we delve into these evolving trends, uncover the potential for greater integration, and, ultimately, enhance outcomes using the citizen science initiative Kefir4All as an illustrative example.

11. Teaching Proficiency of Pre-Service Secondary Teachers in Eastern Samar State University-Salcedo Campus

Abstract

Competent teachers are attributed to student performance, school effectiveness, and the efficiency of an entire education system. Hence, this study compares the respondents' teaching proficiency across their profiles and correlates to their academic performance. The study utilized 30 pre-service secondary teachers of Eastern Samar State University Salcedo selected by complete enumeration, a descriptive comparative and correlational research design, and a questionnaire. Frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation were applied for descriptive analysis; t-test for comparison of respondents' teaching proficiency; and Pearson's correlation coefficient for the relationship between academic performance and teaching proficiency. The study revealed that respondents had a proficient teaching proficiency. Specifically, they were proficient in subject matter knowledge, lesson planning, classroom management, instructional strategies and motivation, communication skills, questioning skills, and professionalism. They have a very good academic performance in both professional education and major field of specialization. Furthermore, the study found no significant difference in the teaching proficiency across the respondents' sex and age. However, a significant relationship was found between academic performance and teaching proficiency. Based on the findings, it is recommended that remedial classes on contents, pedagogies, and principles be provided especially for those respondents with low academic performance, to improve their teaching proficiency.

12. The Role of SEL in Improving Literacy Development. Introductory Brief

Abstract

Social-emotional development and well-being are integral to the teaching and learning of literacy practices. This introductory brief focuses on the underlying science of how thinking, feeling, and perceptions along multiple dimensions interact to influence what we do as learners. This brief draws on the work of scholars in the fields of neuroscience, psychology, human development, learning sciences, literacy, and social and emotional learning (SEL) to provide a grounding framework for understanding the relationship between social-emotional development and literacy development. This brief also provides concrete examples of how supporting the five core competencies of SEL -- self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making -- can support students' literacy development, and vice versa. Finally, informed by the civic goals of public education, this brief also documents the relationship between social and emotional learning and literacy development are central to civic reasoning and discourse.

13. Mock Board Examination Results as Predictors in the Licensure Examination for Certified Public Accountants

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine whether the mock board examination performance can predict a candidate's performance in the Licensure Examination for Certified Public Accountants (LECPA). It covered the Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) graduates from a higher education institution in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines, who took the mock board examination and were first-time LECPA takers from the October 2022 to May 2023 batches. Participants were directly included in the study. A simple linear regression analysis was utilized to determine whether a candidate's performance on the mock board could predict their LECPA performance. The model summary revealed a value of 0.474, which is below 0.5. Therefore, the study concluded that the mock board examination can predict overall LECPA performance. This result implied that higher scores on the mock board examination correlate with a higher probability of passing the LECPA. Based on these findings, the learning institution should regularly improve the mock board examinations. Suggestions include aligning the difficulty level of the mock board with the LECPA and having the assessment conducted by a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examiner other than the mock board lecturer.

14. A Quantum Key Distribution System for Mobile Platforms with Highly Indistinguishable States

Abstract

Quantum key distribution (QKD) allows two users to exchange a provably secure key for cryptographic applications. In prepare-and-measure QKD protocols, the states must be indistinguishable to prevent information leakage to an eavesdropper performing a side-channel attack. Here, we measure the indistinguishability of quantum states in a prepare-and-measure three-state BB84 polarization-based decoy state protocol using resonant-cavity light-emitting diodes (RC-LEDs) as the source in the transmitter. We make the spatial, spectral, and temporal DOF of the generated quantum states nearly indistinguishable using a spatial filter single-mode fiber, a narrow-band spectral filter, and adjustable timing of the electrical pulses driving the RC-LEDs, respectively. The sources have fully indistinguishable transverse spatial modes. The measured fractional mutual information between an assumed eavesdropper and the legitimate receiver is $2.39\times10^{-5}$ due to the spectral distinguishability and $4.31\times10^{-5}$ for the temporal distinguishability. The source is integrated into a full QKD system operating in a laboratory environment, where we achieve a raw key rate of 532 Kbits/s with an average quantum bit error rate of 1.83\%. The low system size, weight, and power make it suitable for mobile platforms such as uncrewed aerial vehicles (drones) or automobiles.

Abstract

An amplitude analysis of $B^-\rightarrow D^- D^0 K_\mathrm{S}^0$ decays is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9\,\text{fb}^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13$\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$. A resonant structure of spin-parity $0^+$ is observed in the $D^0 K_\mathrm{S}^0$ invariant-mass spectrum with a significance of $5.3\,\sigma$. The mass and width of the state, modeled with a Breit$-$Wigner lineshape, are determined to be $2883\pm11\pm6\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V\!/}c^2$ and $87_{-47}^{+22}\pm6\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V}$ respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These properties and the quark content are consistent with those of the open-charm tetraquark state $T_{cs 0}^{*}(2870)^0$ observed previously in the $D^+ K^-$ final state of the $B^-\rightarrow D^- D^+ K^-$ decay. This result confirms the existence of the $T_{cs 0}^{*}(2870)^0$ state in a new decay mode. The $T_{cs1}^{*}(2900)^0$ state, reported in the $B^-\rightarrow D^- D^+ K^-$ decay, is also searched for in the $D^0 K_\mathrm{S}^0$ invariant-mass spectrum of the $B^- \rightarrow D^- D^0 K_\mathrm{S}^0$ decay, without finding evidence for it., Comment: All figures and tables, along with machine-readable versions and any supplementary material and information, are available at https://lbfence.cern.ch/alcm/public/analysis/full-details/3162/ (LHCb public pages)

Abstract

Reconstruction of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) signal has been a standard procedure in BAO analyses over the past decade and has helped to improve the BAO parameter precision by a factor of ~2 on average. The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) BAO analysis for the first year (DR1) data uses the ``standard'' reconstruction framework, in which the displacement field is estimated from the observed density field by solving the linearized continuity equation in redshift space, and galaxy and random positions are shifted in order to partially remove nonlinearities. There are several approaches to solving for the displacement field in real survey data, including the multigrid (MG), iterative Fast Fourier Transform (iFFT), and iterative Fast Fourier Transform particle (iFFTP) algorithms. In this work, we analyze these algorithms and compare them with various metrics including two-point statistics and the displacement itself using realistic DESI mocks. We focus on three representative DESI samples, the emission line galaxies (ELG), quasars (QSO), and the bright galaxy sample (BGS), which cover the extreme redshifts and number densities, and potential wide-angle effects. We conclude that the MG and iFFT algorithms agree within 0.4% in post-reconstruction power spectrum on BAO scales with the RecSym convention, which does not remove large-scale redshift space distortions (RSDs), in all three tracers. The RecSym convention appears to be less sensitive to displacement errors than the RecIso convention, which attempts to remove large-scale RSDs. However, iFFTP deviates from the first two; thus, we recommend against using iFFTP without further development. In addition, we provide the optimal settings for reconstruction for five years of DESI observation. Abstract

The extreme temperature gradients from day- to nightside in the atmospheres of hot Jupiters generate fast winds in the form of equatorial jets or day-to-night flows. Observations of blue-shifted and red-shifted signals in the transmission and dayside spectra of WASP-189b have sparked discussions about the nature of winds on this planet. To investigate the structure of winds in the atmosphere of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-189b, we studied its dayside emission spectrum with CRIRES$^+$ in the spectral K band. We used the cross-correlation method to detect emission signals of CO and Fe, and employed a Bayesian framework to retrieve the atmospheric parameters relating to the temperature-pressure structure and chemistry. The retrieval incorporated a numerical model of the line profile influenced by various dynamic effects to determine the wind structure. The cross-correlation signals of CO and Fe showed a velocity offset of ~6km/s, which could be caused by a fast day-to-night wind in the atmosphere of WASP-189b. The atmospheric retrieval showed that the line profile of the observed spectra is best fitted by the presence of a day-to-night wind of 4.4km/s, while the retrieved equatorial jet velocity of 1.0km/s is consistent with the absence of such a jet. Such a wind pattern is consistent with the observed line broadening and can explain the majority of the velocity offset, while uncertainties in the ephemerides and the effects of a hot spot could also contribute to this offset. We further retrieved an inverted temperature-pressure profile and determined the C/O ratio and metallicity. We showed that red-shifts of a few km/s in the dayside spectra could be explained by day-to-night winds. Further studies combining transmission and dayside observations could advance our understanding of WASP-189b's atmospheric circulation by improving the uncertainties in the velocity offset and wind parameters., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics 15 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

The inclusive cross sections of prompt $J/\psi$ and $\psi(3686)$ production are measured at center-of-mass energies from 3.808 to 4.951 GeV. The dataset used is 22 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. The results obtained are in agreement with the previous BESIII measurements of exclusive $J/\psi$ and $\psi(3686)$ production. The average values obtained for the cross sections measured in the center-of-mass energy ranges from 4.527 to 4.951 GeV for $J/\psi$ and from 4.843 to 4.951 GeV for $\psi(3686)$, where the impact of known resonances is negligible, are $14.0\pm1.7\pm3.1$ pb and $15.3\pm3.0$ pb, respectively. For $J/\psi$, the first and the second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. For $\psi(3686)$, the uncertainty is total. Abstract

This work focuses on the ice features toward the binary protostellar system Ced 110 IRS 4A and 4B, and observed with JWST as part of the Early Release Science Ice Age collaboration. We aim to explore the JWST observations of the binary protostellar system Ced~110~IRS4A and IRS4B to unveil and quantify the ice inventories toward these sources. We compare the ice abundances with those found for the same molecular cloud. The analysis is performed by fitting or comparing laboratory infrared spectra of ices to the observations. Spectral fits are carried out with the ENIIGMA fitting tool that searches for the best fit. For Ced~110~IRS4B, we detected the major ice species H$_2$O, CO, CO$_2$ and NH$_3$. All species are found in a mixture except for CO and CO$_2$, which have both mixed and pure ice components. In the case of Ced~110~IRS4A, we detected the same major species as in Ced~110~IRS4B, as well as the following minor species CH$_4$, SO$_2$, CH$_3$OH, OCN$^-$, NH$_4^+$ and HCOOH. Tentative detection of N$_2$O ice (7.75~$\mu$m), forsterite dust (11.2~$\mu$m) and CH$_3^+$ gas emission (7.18~$\mu$m) in the primary source are also presented. Compared with the two lines of sight toward background stars in the Chameleon I molecular cloud, the protostar has similar ice abundances, except in the case of the ions that are higher in IRS4A. The clearest differences are the absence of the 7.2 and 7.4~$\mu$m absorption features due to HCOO$^-$ and icy complex organic molecules in IRS4A and evidence of thermal processing in both IRS4A and IRS4B as probed by the CO$_2$ ice features. We conclude that the binary protostellar system Ced~110~IRS4A and IRS4B has a large inventory of icy species. The similar ice abundances in comparison to the starless regions in the same molecular cloud suggest that the chemical conditions of the protostar were set at earlier stages in the molecular cloud., Comment: 33 pages, 19 Figures. Abstract

A film of liquid helium on the surface of material traps for ultracold neutrons protects the neutrons from being absorbed by the trap walls. By using surface roughness and an electrostatic field, it is possible to maintain a helium film of sufficient thickness throughout the height of the trap. The field distribution near the tip of such wall roughness of the trap was calculated, and the effect of this field on holding the helium film was estimated., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

KM3NeT/ORCA is an underwater neutrino telescope under construction in the Mediterranean Sea. Its primary scientific goal is to measure the atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters and to determine the neutrino mass ordering. ORCA can constrain the oscillation parameters $\Delta m^{2}_{31}$ and $\theta_{23}$ by reconstructing the arrival direction and energy of multi-GeV neutrinos crossing the Earth. Searches for deviations from the Standard Model of particle physics in the forward scattering of neutrinos inside Earth matter, produced by Non-Standard Interactions, can be conducted by investigating distortions of the standard oscillation pattern of neutrinos of all flavours. This work reports on the results of the search for non-standard neutrino interactions using the first six detection units of ORCA and 433 kton-years of exposure. No significant deviation from standard interactions was found in a sample of 5828 events reconstructed in the 1 GeV$-$1 TeV energy range. The flavour structure of the non-standard coupling was constrained at 90\% confidence level to be $|\varepsilon_{\mu\tau} | \leq 5.4 \times 10^{-3}$, $|\varepsilon_{e\tau} | \leq 7.4 \times 10^{-2}$, $|\varepsilon_{e\mu} | \leq 5.6 \times 10^{-2}$ and $-0.015 \leq \varepsilon_{\tau\tau} - \varepsilon_{\mu\mu} \leq 0.017$. The results are comparable to the current most stringent limits placed on the parameters by other experiments.

Challenging neutron-capture cross-section measurements of small cross sections and samples with a very limited number of atoms require high-flux time-of-flight facilities. In turn, such facilities need innovative detection setups that are fast, have low sensitivity to neutrons, can quickly recover from the so-called $\gamma$-flash, and offer the highest possible detection sensitivity. In this paper, we present several steps toward such advanced systems. Specifically, we describe the performance of a high-sensitivity experimental setup at CERN n\_TOF EAR2. It consists of nine sTED detector modules in a compact cylindrical configuration, two conventional used large-volume C$_{6}$D$_{6}$ detectors, and one LaCl$_{3}$(Ce) detector. The performance of these detection systems is compared using $^{93}$Nb($n$,$\gamma$) data. We also developed a detailed \textsc{Geant4} Monte Carlo model of the experimental EAR2 setup, which allows for a better understanding of the detector features, including their efficiency determination. This Monte Carlo model has been used for further optimization, thus leading to a new conceptual design of a $\gamma$ detector array, STAR, based on a deuterated-stilbene crystal array. Finally, the suitability of deuterated-stilbene crystals for the future STAR array is investigaged experimentally utilizing a small stilbene-d12 prototype. The results suggest a similar or superior performance of STAR with respect to other setups based on liquid-scintillators, and allow for additional features such as neutron-gamma discrimination and a higher level of customization capability.

Abstract

The detailed feeding and feedback mechanisms of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are not yet well known. For low-luminosity and obscured AGN, as well as late-type galaxies, determining the central black hole (BH) masses is challenging. Our goal with the GATOS sample is to study circum-nuclear regions and better estimate BH masses with more precision than scaling relations offer. Using ALMA's high spatial resolution, we resolve CO(3-2) emissions within ~100 pc around the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in seven GATOS galaxies to estimate their BH masses when sufficient gas is present. We study seven bright ($L_{AGN}(14-150\mathrm{keV}) \geq 10^{42}\mathrm{erg/s}$), nearby (<28 Mpc) galaxies from the GATOS core sample. For comparison, we searched the literature for previous BH mass estimates and made additional calculations using the \mbh~ - $\sigma$ relation and the fundamental plane of BH activity. We developed a supervised machine learning method to estimate BH masses from position-velocity diagrams or first-moment maps using ALMA CO(3-2) observations. Numerical simulations with a wide range of parameters created the training, validation, and test sets. Seven galaxies provided enough gas for BH mass estimations: NGC4388, NGC5506, NGC5643, NGC6300, NGC7314, NGC7465, and NGC~7582. Our BH masses, ranging from 6.39 to 7.18 log$(M_{BH}/M_\odot)$, align with previous estimates. Additionally, our machine learning method provides robust error estimations with confidence intervals and offers greater potential than scaling relations. This work is a first step toward an automated \mbh estimation method using machine learning.

Abstract

Context. Spectroscopic surveys like APOGEE, GALAH, and LAMOST have significantly advanced our understanding of the Milky Way by providing extensive stellar parameters and chemical abundances. Complementing these, photometric surveys with narrow/medium-band filters, such as the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS), offer the potential to estimate stellar parameters and abundances for a much larger number of stars. Aims. This work develops methodologies to extract stellar atmospheric parameters and selected chemical abundances from S-PLUS photometric data, which spans ~3000 square degrees using seven narrowband and five broadband filters. Methods. Using 66 S-PLUS colors, we estimated parameters based on training samples from LAMOST, APOGEE, and GALAH, applying Cost-Sensitive Neural Networks (NN) and Random Forests (RF). We tested for spurious correlations by including abundances not covered by the S-PLUS filters and evaluated NN and RF performance, with NN consistently outperforming RF. Including Teff and log g as features improved accuracy by ~3%. We retained only parameters with a goodness-of-fit above 50%. Results. Our approach provides reliable estimates of fundamental parameters (Teff, log g, [Fe/H]) and abundance ratios such as [{\alpha}/Fe], [Al/Fe], [C/Fe], [Li/Fe], and [Mg/Fe] for ~5 million stars, with goodness-of-fit >60%. Additional ratios like [Cu/Fe], [O/Fe], and [Si/Fe] were derived but are less accurate. Validation using star clusters, TESS, and J-PLUS data confirmed the robustness of our methodology. Conclusions. By leveraging S-PLUS photometry and machine learning, we present a cost-effective alternative to high-resolution spectroscopy for deriving stellar parameters and abundances, enabling insights into Milky Way stellar populations and supporting future classification efforts., Comment: 23 pages, 14 Figures

Abstract

Astronomers have found more than a dozen planets transiting 10-40 million year old stars, but even younger transiting planets have remained elusive. A possible reason for the lack of such discoveries is that newly formed planets are not yet in a configuration that would be recognized as a transiting planet or cannot exhibit transits because our view is blocked by a protoplanetary disk. However, we now know that many outer disks are warped; provided the inner disk is depleted, transiting planets may thus be visible. Here we report the observations of the transiting planet IRAS 04125+2902 b orbiting a 3 Myr, 0.7 M$_\odot$, pre-main sequence star in the Taurus Molecular Cloud. IRAS 04125+2902 hosts a nearly face-on (i $\sim$ 30$^\circ$) transitional disk and a wide binary companion. The planet has a period of 8.83 days, a radius of 10.9 R$_\oplus$ (0.97R$_J$), and a 95%-confidence upper limit on its mass of 90M$_\oplus$ (0.3M$_J$) from radial velocity measurements, making it a possible precursor of the super-Earths and sub-Neptunes that are commonly found around main-sequence stars. The rotational broadening of the star and the orbit of the wide (4", 635 AU) companion are both consistent with edge-on orientations. Thus, all components of the system appear to be aligned except the outer disk; the origin of this misalignment is unclear. Given the rare set of circumstances required to detect a transiting planet at ages when the disk is still present, IRAS 04125+2902 b likely provides a unique window into sub-Neptunes immediately following formation., Comment: Initial version submitted to Nature. Abstract

We present a timing study of the gamma and X-ray observations and analysis of a sample of bright gamma-ray bursts (GRBs; i.e. GRB 180720B, GRB 181222B, GRB 211211A and GRB 220910A), including the very bright and long GRB 211211A (a.k.a. kilonova candidate). They have been detected and observed by the Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM) installed on the International Space Station (ISS) and the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) on-board the Fermi mission. The early (T-T0=s) and high-energy (0.3-20 MeV) ASIM High Energy Detector (HED) and (150 keV-30 GeV) Fermi (BGO) light curves show well-defined peaks with a low quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) frequency between 2.5-3.5 Hz that could be identified with the spin of the neutron star in the binary mergers (coinciding with the orbital frequency of the binary merger) originating these GRBs. These QPOs consist on the first detection of low-frequency QPOs (<10 Hz) detected in magnetars so far. We also detect a strong QPO at 21.8-22 Hz in GRB 181222B together with its (less significant) harmonics. Abstract

Coupled spin evolution and tunneling together with the relaxation and decoherence effects are studied for the double quantum dot formed in a semiconductor nanowire and driven by the periodic electric field. Such system represents a model of the spin and charge qubits interacting via the strong spin-orbit coupling. It is found that at certain regimes the combination of fast relaxation in the coordinate channel with the slower relaxation in the spin channel leads to the promising combination of fast spin manipulation and slow spin relaxation, locking the flipped spin in an excited state in one of the dots for a sufficiently long time. The predicted effect is maintained for a wide range of the relaxation times and the driving amplitude both for the coordinate and the spin channels and is also observed on higher subharmonic which requires lower driving frequencies., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

We search for radio emission from star-planet interactions in the M-dwarf system GJ~486, which hosts an Earth-like planet. We observed the GJ~486 system with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) from 550 to 750 MHz in nine different epochs, between October 2021 and February 2022, covering almost all orbital phases of GJ~486 b from different orbital cycles. We obtained radio images and dynamic spectra of the total and circularly polarized intensity for each individual epoch We do not detect any quiescent radio emission in any epoch above 3$\sigma$. Similarly, we do not detect any bursty emission in our dynamic spectra. While we cannot completely rule out that the absence of a radio detection is due to time variability of the radio emission, or to the maximum electron-cyclotron maser emission being below our observing range, this seems unlikely. We discuss two possible scenarios: an intrinsic dim radio signal, or alternatively, that the anisotropic beamed emission pointed away from the observer. If the non-detection of radio emission from star-planet interaction in GJ~486 is due to an intrinsically dim signal, this implies that, independently of whether the planet is magnetized or not, the mass-loss rate is small (\dot{M}_\star $\lesssim$ 0.3 \dot{M}_\sun) and that, concomitantly, the efficiency of the conversion of Poynting flux into radio emission must be low ($\beta \lesssim 10^{-3}$). Free-free absorption effects are negligible, given the high value of the coronal temperature. Finally, if the anisotropic beaming pointed away from us, this would imply that GJ~486 has very low values of its magnetic obliquity and inclination.

Abstract

We analyse the large-scale clustering of the Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) and Quasar (QSO) sample from the first data release (DR1) of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). In particular, we constrain the primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) parameter $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm loc}$ via the large-scale scale-dependent bias in the power spectrum using $1,631,716$ LRGs ($0.6 < z < 1.1$) and $1,189,129$ QSOs ($0.8 < z < 3.1$). This new measurement takes advantage of the enormous statistical power at large scales of DESI DR1 data, surpassing the latest data release (DR16) of the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS). For the first time in this kind of analysis, we use a blinding procedure to mitigate the risk of confirmation bias in our results. We improve the model of the radial integral constraint proposing an innovative correction of the window function. We also carefully test the mitigation of the dependence of the target selection on the photometry qualities by incorporating an angular integral constraint contribution to the window function, and validate our methodology with the blinded data. Finally, combining the two samples, we measure $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm loc} = {-3.6}_{-9.1}^{+9.0}$ at $68\%$ confidence, where we assume the universality relation for the LRG sample and a recent merger model for the QSO sample about the response of bias to primordial non-Gaussianity. Adopting the universality relation for the PNG bias in the QSO analysis leads to $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm loc} = 3.5_{-7.4}^{+10.7}$ at $68\%$ confidence. This measurement is the most precise determination of primordial non-Gaussianity using large-scale structure to date, surpassing the latest result from eBOSS by a factor of $2.3$.

Abstract

In this study we quantitatively examine the manner pulsar wind, supernova ejecta and defunct stellar wind materials distribute and melt together into plerions. We performed 2.5D MHD simulations of the entire evolution of their stellar surroundings and different scenarios are explored, whether the star dies as a red supergiant and Wolf Rayet supernova progenitors, and whether it moved with velocity 20 km/s or 40 km/s through the ISM. Within the post explosion, early 10 kyr, the H burning products rich red supergiant wind only mixes by <= 20 per cent, due to its dense circumstellar medium filling the progenitor bow shock trail, still unaffected by the supernova blastwave. Wolf Rayet materials, enhanced in C, N, O elements, distribute circularly for the 35 Mo star moving at 20 km/s and oblongly at higher velocities, mixing efficiently up to 80 per cent. Supernova ejecta, filled with Mg, Si, Ca, Ti and Fe, remain spherical for longer times at 20 km/s but form complex patterns at higher progenitor speeds due to earlier interaction with the bow shock, in which they mix more efficiently. The pulsar wind mixing is more efficient for Wolf Rayet (25 per cent) than red supergiant progenitors (20 per cent). This work reveals that the past evolution of massive stars and their circumstellar environments critically shapes the internal distribution of chemical elements on plerionic supernova remnants, and, therefore, governs the origin of the various emission mechanisms at work therein. Abstract

As part of the PIP-II project at Fermilab, a pre-production cryomodule featuring 325 MHz Single Spoke Resonator type 2 (SSR2) superconducting RF cavities is under construction. These SSR2 cavities are fabricated by industry partners and undergo initial cold testing at our collaborating institution, IJCLab in France, utilizing low-power coupler. Subsequently, the cavities are subjected to final qualification at Fermilab, complete with tuner and high-power coupler assemblies. This paper provides an overview of the ongoing efforts dedicated to high-power testing of jacketed SSR2 cavities in the Spoke Test Cryostat (STC) at Fermilab. Abstract

The AU Microscopii planetary system is only 24 Myr old, and its geometry may provide clues about the early dynamical history of planetary systems. Here, we present the first measurement of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for the warm sub-Neptune AU\,Mic\,c, using two transits observed simultaneously with VLT/ESPRESSO, CHEOPS, and NGTS. After correcting for flares and for the magnetic activity of the host star, and accounting for transit-timing variations, we find the sky-projected spin-orbit angle of planet c to be in the range $\lambda_c=67.8_{-49.0}^{+31.7}$ degrees (1-$\sigma$). We examine the possibility that planet c is misaligned with respect to the orbit of the inner planet b ($\lambda_b=-2.96_{-10.30}^{+10.44}$ degrees), and the equatorial plane of the host star, and discuss scenarios that could explain both this and the planet's high density, including secular interactions with other bodies in the system or a giant impact. We note that a significantly misaligned orbit for planet c is in some degree of tension with the dynamical stability of the system, and with the fact that we see both planets in transit, though these arguments alone do not preclude such an orbit. Abstract

RED-100 is a two-phase emission detector with an active volume containing 126~kg of liquid xenon. The detector was exposed to the antineutrino flux of about $1.4 \cdot 10^{13}~$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ at a distance of 19~m from the 3.1~GW Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) reactor core. The comparison of data from 331~kg$\cdot$days with the reactor on and 106~kg$\cdot$days with the reactor off shows no statistically significant excess and allows to put constraints on coherent elastic interactions of antineutrinos with xenon nuclei.

Abstract

The X-ray polarization observations made possible with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) offer new ways of probing high-energy emission processes in astrophysical jets from blazars. Here we report on the first X-ray polarization observation of the blazar S4 0954+65 in a high optical and X-ray state. During our multi-wavelength campaign on the source, we detected an optical flare whose peak coincided with the peak of an X-ray flare. This optical-X-ray flare most likely took place in a feature moving along the parsec-scale jet, imaged at 43 GHz by the Very Long Baseline Array. The 43 GHz polarization angle of the moving component underwent a rotation near the time of the flare. In the optical band, prior to the IXPE observation, we measured the polarization angle to be aligned with the jet axis. In contrast, during the optical flare the optical polarization angle was perpendicular to the jet axis; after the flare, it reverted to being parallel to the jet axis. Due to the smooth behavior of the optical polarization angle during the flare, we favor shocks as the main acceleration mechanism. We also infer that the ambient magnetic field lines in the jet were parallel to the jet position angle. The average degree of optical polarization during the IXPE observation was (14.3$\pm$4.1)%. Despite the flare, we only detected an upper limit of 14% (at 3$\sigma$ level) on the X-ray polarization degree; although a reasonable assumption on the X-ray polarization angle results in an upper limit of 8.8% ($3\sigma$). We model the spectral energy distribution (SED) and spectral polarization distribution (SPD) of S4 0954+65 with leptonic (synchrotron self-Compton) and hadronic (proton and pair synchrotron) models. Abstract

Galaxy clusters and groups are the last link in the chain of hierarchical structure formation. Their environments can be significantly affected by outbursts from AGN, especially in groups where the medium density is lower and the gravitational potential shallower. The interaction between AGN and group weather can therefore greatly impact their evolution. We investigate the non-thermal radio emission in Abell 1213, a galaxy group which is part of a larger sample of ~50 systems (X-GAP) recently granted XMM-Newton observations. We exploit proprietary LOFAR 54 MHz and uGMRT 380 MHz observations, complementing them with 144 MHz LOFAR survey and XMM-Newton archival data. A1213 hosts a bright AGN associated with one of the central members, 4C 29.41, which was previously optically identified as a dumb-bell galaxy. Observations at 144 MHz at a resolution of 0.3'' allow us to resolve the central radio galaxy. From this source, a ~500 kpc-long tail extends North-East. Our analysis suggests that the tail likely originated from a past outburst of 4C 29.41, and its current state might be the result of the interaction with the surrounding environment. The plateau of the spectral index distribution in the Easternmost part of the tail suggests mild particle re-acceleration, that could have re-energised seed electrons from the past activity of the AGN. While we observe a spatial and physical correlation of the extended, central emission with the thermal plasma, which might hint at a mini-halo, current evidence cannot conclusively prove this. A1213 is only the first group, among the X-GAP sample, that we are able to investigate through low-frequency radio observations. Abstract

A comprehensive review of the single diffraction dissociation duality-based model at low missing masses have been presented. The distinguishing feature of the model is the nonlinear Regge proton trajectory used to account for the resonances contributions to the cross-sections. It helps classify and understand the spectrum of excited states of proton and their decays, providing insights into the internal structure and dynamics of particles. The behavior of the differential cross-section in the resonance region at small missing masses $M_x$ is investiaged. The model parameters are refined in the light of new experimental data.

Abstract

The Euclid Wide Survey (EWS) is predicted to find approximately 170 000 galaxy-galaxy strong lenses from its lifetime observation of 14 000 deg^2 of the sky. Detecting this many lenses by visual inspection with professional astronomers and citizen scientists alone is infeasible. Machine learning algorithms, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have been used as an automated method of detecting strong lenses, and have proven fruitful in finding galaxy-galaxy strong lens candidates. We identify the major challenge to be the automatic detection of galaxy-galaxy strong lenses while simultaneously maintaining a low false positive rate. One aim of this research is to have a quantified starting point on the achieved purity and completeness with our current version of CNN-based detection pipelines for the VIS images of EWS. We select all sources with VIS IE < 23 mag from the Euclid Early Release Observation imaging of the Perseus field. We apply a range of CNN architectures to detect strong lenses in these cutouts. All our networks perform extremely well on simulated data sets and their respective validation sets. However, when applied to real Euclid imaging, the highest lens purity is just 11%. Among all our networks, the false positives are typically identifiable by human volunteers as, for example, spiral galaxies, multiple sources, and artefacts, implying that improvements are still possible, perhaps via a second, more interpretable lens selection filtering stage. There is currently no alternative to human classification of CNN-selected lens candidates. Abstract

The physical size of the sound horizon at recombination is a powerful source of information for early-time measurements of the Hubble constant $H_0$, and many proposed solutions to the Hubble tension therefore involve modifications to this scale. In light of this, there has been growing interest in measuring $H_0$ independently of the sound horizon. We present the first such measurement to use data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), jointly analyzing the full-shape galaxy power spectra of DESI luminous red galaxies, emission line galaxies, quasars, and the bright galaxy sample, in a total of six redshift bins. Information from the sound horizon scale is removed from our constraints via a rescaling procedure at the power spectrum level, with our sound horizon-marginalized measurement being driven instead primarily by the matter-radiation equality scale. This measurement is then combined with additional sound horizon-free information from Planck+ACT CMB lensing, uncalibrated type Ia supernovae, and the DESI Lyman-$\alpha$ forest. We agnostically combine with the DESY5, Pantheon+, and Union3 supernova datasets, with our tightest respective constraints being $H_0=66.7^{+1.7}_{-1.9},~67.9^{+1.9}_{-2.1},$ and $67.8^{+2.0}_{-2.2}$ km s-1 Mpc-1. This corresponds to a sub-3% sound horizon-free constraint of the Hubble constant, and is the most precise measurement of its kind to date. Even without including information from the sound horizon, our measurement is still in 2.2-3.0$\sigma$ tension with SH0ES. Additionally, the consistency between our result and other measurements that do rely on the sound horizon scale provides no evidence for new early-Universe physics (e.g. early dark energy). Future DESI data releases will allow unprecedented measurements of $H_0$ and place strong constraints on models that use beyond-$\Lambda$CDM physics to ameliorate the Hubble tension., Comment: 17+7 pages; 5 figures. Abstract

The solar wind, classified by its bulk speed and the Alfv\'enic nature of its fluctuations, generates the heliosphere. The elusive physical processes responsible for the generation of the different types of the wind are a topic of active debate. Recent observations revealed intermittent jets with kinetic energy in the picoflare range, emerging from dark areas of a polar coronal hole threaded by open magnetic field lines. These could substantially contribute to the solar wind. However, their ubiquity and direct links to the solar wind have not been established. Here we report a unique set of remote-sensing and in-situ observations from the Solar Orbiter spacecraft, that establish a unified picture of the fast and Alfv\'enic slow wind, connected to the similar widespread picoflare jet activity in two coronal holes. Abstract

Reduced-order models (ROMs) provide lower dimensional representations of complex systems, capturing their salient features while simplifying control design. Building on previous work, this paper presents an overarching framework for the integration of ROMs and control barrier functions, enabling the use of simplified models to construct safety-critical controllers while providing safety guarantees for complex full-order models. To achieve this, we formalize the connection between full and ROMs by defining projection mappings that relate the states and inputs of these models and leverage simulation functions to establish conditions under which safety guarantees may be transferred from a ROM to its corresponding full-order model. The efficacy of our framework is illustrated through simulation results on a drone and hardware demonstrations on ARCHER, a 3D hopping robot.

Abstract

Chloride-induced corrosion significantly contributes to the degradation of reinforced concrete structures, making accurate predictions of chloride migration and its effects on material durability critical. This paper explores two modeling approaches to estimate the effective diffusion coefficient for chloride transport. The first approach follows Gehlen's interpretable diffusion model, which is based on established physical principles and incorporates time and temperature dependencies in predicting chloride migration. The second approach is a neural network-based method, where the neural network approximates the effective diffusion coefficient. In a subsequent step, the calibrated models are used to predict the penetration depth of the critical chloride content, taking into account the uncertainty in the critical chloride content. The models are calibrated using experimental data measured by a wire sensor installed in a concrete test bridge. The calibration results are compared to effective diffusion coefficients derived from drilling dust samples. A comparison of both approaches reveals the advantages of the physics-based model in terms of transparency and interpretability, while the neural network model demonstrates flexibility and adaptability in data-driven predictions. This study emphasizes the importance of combining traditional and machine learning-based methods to improve the accuracy of chloride migration predictions in reinforced concrete.

Abstract

We have evaluated the imaging capabilities of the Timepix4 hybrid silicon pixel detector for 100 keV and 200 keV electrons in a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). Using the knife-edge method, we have measured the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) at both energies. Our results show a decrease in MTF response at Nyquist (spatial) frequency, dropping from approximately 0.16 at 100 keV to 0.0046 at 200 keV. However, by using the temporal structure of the detected events, including the arrival time and amplitude provided by the Timepix4, we enhanced the spatial discrimination of electron arrival. This approach improved the MTF at Nyquist by factors of 2.12 for 100 keV and 3.16 for 200 keV. Abstract

The mean free path of ionizing photons for neutral hydrogen ($\lambda_\mathrm{mfp}^{912}$) is a crucial quantity in modelling the ionization state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) and the extragalactic ultraviolet background (EUVB), and is widely used in hydrodynamical simulations of galaxies and reionization. We construct the largest quasar spectrum dataset to date -- 12,595 $\mathrm{S/N}>3$ spectra -- using the Y1 observation of Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) to make the most precise model-independent measurement of the mean free path at $3.2\leq z\leq 4.6$. By stacking the spectra in 17 redshift bins and modelling the Lyman continuum profile, we get a redshift evolution $\lambda_\mathrm{mfp}^{912}\propto(1+z)^{-4.27}$ at $2\leq z\leq 5$, which is much shallower than previous estimates. We then explore the sources of systematic bias, including the choice of intrinsic quasar continuum, the consideration of Lyman series opacity and Lyman limit opacity evolution and the definition of $\lambda_\mathrm{mfp}^{912}$. Combining our results with estimates of $\lambda_\mathrm{mfp}^{912}$ at higher redshifts, we conclude at high confidence that the evolution in $\lambda_\mathrm{mfp}^{912}$ steepens at $z \approx 5$. We interpret this inflection as the transition from the end of HI reionization to a fully ionized plasma which characterizes the intergalactic medium of the past $\sim10$ billion years., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, submitted to ApJL. Abstract

The process $e^+e^-\to K^0_S K^0_S \psi(3686)$ is studied by analyzing $e^+e^-$ collision data samples collected at eight center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.682 to 4.951 GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $4.1~{\rm fb}^{-1}$. Observation of the $e^+e^-\to K^0_S K^0_S \psi(3686)$ process is found for the first time with a statistical significance of $6.3\sigma$, and the cross sections at each center-of-mass energy are measured. The ratio of cross sections of $e^+e^-\to K_S^0 K_S^0 \psi(3686)$ relative to $e^+e^-\to K^+ K^- \psi(3686)$ is determined to be $\frac{\sigma(e^+e^-\to K_S^0 K_S^0 \psi(3686))}{\sigma(e^+e^-\to K^+ K^- \psi(3686))}=0.45 \pm 0.25$, which is consistent with the prediction based on isospin symmetry. The uncertainty includes both statistical and systematic contributions. Additionally, the $K_S^0\psi(3686)$ invariant mass distribution is found to be consistent with three-body phase space. The significance of a contribution beyond three-body phase space is only $0.8\sigma$.

Abstract

In-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy was used to study excited states of the neutron-deficient nucleus $^{37}$K populated in fast-beam inelastic-scattering and proton-removal reactions at high-momentum loss. New $\gamma$-ray transitions and $\gamma\gamma$ coincidence relationships were established using the $\gamma$-ray tracking array GRETINA. The extension of the level scheme up to the first $(13/2^-)$ state highlights the potential of this recently demonstrated population pathway for studies of isospin symmetry involving mirror-energy differences. The nature of the newly identified states is discussed in comparison to shell-model calculations with the FSU cross-shell effective interaction. The calculated occupation numbers of individual orbitals are shown to offer a consistent explanation of the measured mirror-energy differences between $^{37}$K and $^{37}$Ar., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

A study of $\it{\Lambda}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}$ and $\it{\Xi}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}$ decays to $\it{\Lambda} h^{+} h^{\prime -}$ $(h^{(\prime)}=\pi, K)$ is performed using $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during LHC Runs 1$-$2, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9~\rm{fb}^{-1}$. The branching fractions for these decays are measured using the $\it{\Lambda}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}\to\it{\Lambda}_{\it{c}}^+(\to\it{\Lambda}\pi^+)\pi^-$ decay as control channel. The decays $\it{\Lambda}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}\to\it{\Lambda}\pi^+\pi^-$ and $\it{\Xi}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}\to\it{\Lambda}K^-\pi^+$ are observed for the first time. For decay modes with sufficient signal yields, $CP$ asymmetries are measured in the full and localized regions of the final-state phase space. Evidence is found for $CP$ violation in the $\it{\Lambda}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}\to\it{\Lambda}K^+K^-$ decay, interpreted as originating primarily from an asymmetric $\it{\Lambda}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0} \to \it{N}^{*+} \it{K}^-$ decay amplitude. Abstract

Safe navigation of cluttered environments is a critical challenge in robotics. It is typically approached by separating the planning and tracking problems, with planning executed on a reduced order model to generate reference trajectories, and control techniques used to track these trajectories on the full order dynamics. Inevitable tracking error necessitates robustification of the nominal plan to ensure safety; in many cases, this is accomplished via worst-case bounding, which ignores the fact that some trajectories of the planning model may be easier to track than others. In this work, we present a novel method leveraging massively parallel simulation to learn a dynamic tube representation, which characterizes tracking performance as a function of actions taken by the planning model. Planning model trajectories are then optimized such that the dynamic tube lies in the free space, allowing a balance between performance and safety to be traded off in real time. The resulting Dynamic Tube MPC is applied to the 3D hopping robot ARCHER, enabling agile and performant navigation of cluttered environments, and safe collision-free traversal of narrow corridors., Comment: Submitted to ICRA 2025

Abstract

We report on a blinded search for dark matter with single- and few-electron signals in the first science run of XENONnT relying on a novel detector response framework that is physics-model-dependent. We derive 90\% confidence upper limits for dark matter-electron interactions. Heavy and light mediator cases are considered for the standard halo model and dark matter up-scattered in the Sun. We set stringent new limits on dark matter-electron scattering via a heavy mediator with a mass within 10-20\,MeV/$c^2$ and electron absorption of axion-like particles and dark photons for $m_\chi$ below 0.186\,keV/$c^2$., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

In galaxy survey analysis, the observed clustering statistics do not directly match theoretical predictions but rather have been processed by a window function that arises from the survey geometry including the sky footprint, redshift-dependent background number density and systematic weights. While window convolution of the power spectrum is well studied, for the bispectrum with a larger number of degrees of freedom, it poses a significant numerical and computational challenge. In this work, we consider the effect of the survey window in the tripolar spherical harmonic decomposition of the bispectrum and lay down a formal procedure for their convolution via a series expansion of configuration-space three-point correlation functions, which was first proposed by Sugiyama et al. (2019). We then provide a linear algebra formulation of the full window convolution, where an unwindowed bispectrum model vector can be directly premultiplied by a window matrix specific to each survey geometry. To validate the pipeline, we focus on the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Data Release 1 (DR1) luminous red galaxy (LRG) sample in the South Galactic Cap (SGC) in the redshift bin $0.4 \leqslant z \leqslant 0.6$. We first perform convergence checks on the measurement of the window function from discrete random catalogues, and then investigate the convergence of the window convolution series expansion truncated at a finite of number of terms as well as the performance of the window matrix. This work highlights the differences in window convolution between the power spectrum and bispectrum, and provides a streamlined pipeline for the latter for current surveys such as DESI and the Euclid mission., Comment: 30 pages, 12 figures, for submission to JCAP

Abstract

Vanadium dioxide with metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) that is triggered by heat, current or light is a promising material for modern active THz/mid-IR metasurfaces and all-optical big data processing systems. Multilayer VO$_2$-based active metasurfaces are urgently needed however several important issues related to VO$_2$ properties in VO$_2$/TiO$_2$/Al$_2$O$_3$ films should be thoroughly examined first. We study electrical, optical and structural properties of VO$_2$ films as well as their composition and switching characteristics as function of the VO$_2$ layer thickness in VO$_2$/TiO$_2$ composites. XRD analysis revealed an epitaxial growth of films with deformation of the monoclinic VO$_2$ lattice to hexagonal symmetry. Reduced VO$_2$ layer thickness from 170 nm to 20 nm results in increased phase transition temperature while the width of the resistance versus temperature hysteresis loop R(T) remains constant at ~6C for all VO$_2$ thicknesses in the range of 20-170 nm. The resistance alteration ratio is reduced from 4.2e3 to 2.7e2 in thinner films. Raman spectra reveal a significant shift of VO$_2$ lattice vibration modes for films thinner than 30 nm claiming a great structural strain whereas modes position for thicker VO$_2$ layers are similar to those in bulk structure. Composition of VO$_2$ films has revealed only a minor alteration of VO$_2$/V$_2$O$_5$ phases ratio from 1.6 to 1.8 when the film thickness has been increased from 20 nm to 50 nm. Investigation of surface elemental composition and valence states of VO$_2$ films revealed that VO$_2$/V$_2$O$_5$ ratio remains practically unchanged with thickness reduction. The study of electrical MIT dynamics revealed the switching time of a 50 nm VO$_2$ film to be as low as 800 ns.
