Abstract Background Mild fetal ventriculomegaly (VM) is a nonspecific finding common to several pathologies with varying prognosis and is, therefore, a challenge in fetal consultation. We aimed to perform a constant, detailed analysis of prenatal findings and postnatal outcomes in fetuses with early-onset and late-onset mild ventriculomegaly, and provide a new evidence basis and new perspective for prenatal counseling. Methods This is a retrospective cohort study of women with a diagnosis of mild fetal VM between January 2018 and October 2020. The population was divided into two groups according to the gestational ages (GAs) at initial diagnosis: the early-onset group (diagnosed at/before 24+6 weeks) and the late-onset group (diagnosed after 24+6 weeks). Clinical data and pregnancy outcomes were obtained from hospital records. The children’s neurodevelopment status was assessed using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, Third Edition (ASQ-3) and telephone interviews. Results Our study cohort comprised 324 fetuses, out of which 94 (29%) were classified as early-onset group and 230 (71%) late-onset group. Early-onset group was more likely to have concurrent additional abnormalities, whereas in the late-onset group, isolated enlargement was more common (P = 0.01). ABSTRACTIn the past decades, the environment has changed drastically in China with rapid economic development. Lack of data, especially data with spatiotemporal information, has however hindered evaluating progress of environmental indicators in the global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) framework. Here, we evaluate and explore geospatial information of 20 environmental SDG indicators from six SDGs in China from 2010 to 2020 using big data. We show China has improved rapidly in most of the 20 indicators, except for indicator 13.2.2 (CO2 emission). 63.5% of China’s land mass showed improved states for the SDG indicators. By 2020, four of the indicators were found to have achieved their 2030 targets. It is predicted from the existing data that 10 of the 20 indicators can achieve their targets smoothly by 2030, but two indicators will lag behind. We quantitatively show China’s progress towards the environmental SDG indicators, and put forward timelines and suggestions for policy makers.

Antibiotic related intestinal injury in early life affects subsequent health and susceptibility. Here, we employed weaned piglets as a model to investigate the protective effects of baicalin against early-life antibiotic exposure-induced microbial dysbiosis. Piglets exposed to lincomycin showed a marked reduction in body weight (p < 0.05) and deterioration of jejunum intestinal morphology, alongside an increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as Staphylococcus, Dolosicoccus, Escherichia-Shigella, and Raoultella. In contrast, baicalin treatment resulted in body weights, intestinal morphology, and microbial profiles that closely resembled those of the control group (p > 0.05), with a significant increase in norank_f_Muribaculaceae and Prevotellaceae_NK3B31_group colonization compared with lincomycin group (p < 0.05). Further analysis through fecal microbial transplantation into mice revealed that lincomycin exposure led to significant alterations in intestinal morphology and microbial composition, notably increasing harmful microbes and decreasing beneficial ones such as norank_Muribaculaceae and Akkermansia (p < 0.05). This shift was associated with an increase in harmful metabolites and disruption of the calcium signaling pathway gene expression. Conversely, baicalin supplementation not only counteracted these effects but also enhanced beneficial metabolites and regulated genes within the MAPK signaling pathway (MAP3K11, MAP4K2, MAPK7, MAPK13) and calcium channel proteins (ORA13, CACNA1S, CACNA1F and CACNG8), suggesting a mechanism through which baicalin mitigates antibiotic-induced intestinal and microbial disturbances. These findings highlight baicalin's potential as a plant extract-based intervention for preventing antibiotic-related intestinal injury and offer new targets for therapeutic strategies.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a long-lasting and inflammatory autoimmune condition affecting the gastrointestinal tract, impacting millions of individuals globally. The balance between T helper 17 (Th17) cells and regulatory T cells (Tregs) is pivotal in the pathogenesis and progression of IBD. This review summarizes the pivotal role of Th17/Treg balance in maintaining intestinal homeostasis, elucidating how its dysregulation contributes to the development and exacerbation of IBD. It comprehensively synthesizes the current understanding of how dietary factors regulate the metabolic pathways influencing Th17 and Treg cell differentiation and function. Additionally, this review presents evidence from the literature on the potential of dietary regimens to regulate the Th17/Treg balance as a strategy for the management of IBD. By exploring the intersection between diet, metabolic regulation, and Th17/Treg balance, the review reveals innovative therapeutic approaches for IBD treatment, offering a promising perspective for future research and clinical practice.

According to the Chinese encyclopedia “Ben Cao Gang Mu” (AD 1552–1578), Caprifoliaceae and Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi are used in traditional Chinese medicine to clear heat, detoxify, and treat wind-heat colds, upper respiratory tract infections, and pneumonia. However, the mechanism and the effects of the compound extracts of Caprifoliaceae and Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi on intestinal health remain unclear. From the perspective of intestinal microbes, this study assessed the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and intestinal protective properties of Caprifoliaceae and Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. Mice received diets with or without Caprifoliaceae and Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi extractive (BCA) for 2 weeks in this study. The results showed that BCA increased body weight gain, feed intake, and catalase (CAT) content in the mice but reduced γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (γ-GT) content in the serum (p < 0.05). BCA improved the Sobs, Chao, and Ace indices, as well as the number of Campylobacterota, Patercibacteria, and Desulfobacterota in the colon microbiota, while it decreased the Firmicutes phylum (p < 0.05). At the genus level, BCA increased Candidatus_Saccharimonas, Helicobacter, unclassified_f_Lachnospiraceae, Alistipes, norank_f_norank_o_Clostridia_vadinBB60_group, norank_f_Ruminococcaceae, unclassified_f_Ruminococcaceae, etc. abundance (p < 0.05), but it significantly decreased Lactobacillus and Lachnospiraceae_UCG_001 abundance (p < 0.05). Moreover, BCA improved the concentration of acetic acid, butyric acid, propionic acid, valeric acid, and isovaleric acid and diminished the concentration of isobutyric acid (p < 0.05). Correlation analysis shows that the changes in short-chain fatty acids and antioxidant and inflammatory indices in the serum were significantly correlated with the BCA-enriched microbiota. This study supplemented a database for the application of Caprifoliaceae and Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi in clinical and animal production.

Abstract To evaluate the relationship between factors of metastatic intraparotid lymph node (IPLN) and distant metastasis in parotid adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). Patients with surgically treated parotid ACC were retrospectively enrolled, and primary outcome variable was distant metastasis free survival (DMFS). The effect of factors of metastatic IPLN on DMFS was evaluated using Cox model. In total, 232 patients were included. Extranodal extension of IPLN and cervical lymph nodes did not impact the DMFS, and the 7th but not 8th AJCC N stage was associated with DMFS. Groups of 0 and 1 metastatic IPLN had comparable DMFS, but presence of 2+ positive IPLN was related to increased worse DMFS (p = 0.034, HR 2.09). A new N stage (0 vs 1–2 vs 3+) based on total positive lymph node number exhibited better C-index than traditional N stage. IPLN metastasis increased the risk of distant metastasis, and the impact was mainly determined by the number of metastatic IPLN. Our proposed N stage provided better DMFS prediction than the 8th AJCC N classification.

Constructed from a dataset capturing the seasonal and annual water body distribution of the lower Qarqan River in the Taitma Lake area from 2017 to 2022, and combined with the meteorological and hydraulic engineering data, the spatial and temporal change patterns of the Taitma Lake watershed area were determined. Analyses were conducted using Planetscope (PS) satellite images and a deep learning model. The results revealed the following: ① Deep learning-based water body extraction provides significantly greater accuracy than the conventional water body index approach. With an impressive accuracy of up to 96.0%, UPerNet was found to provide the most effective extraction results among the three convolutional neural networks (U-Net, DeeplabV3+, and UPerNet) used for semantic segmentation; ② Between 2017 and 2022, Taitma Lake’s water area experienced a rapid decrease, with the distribution of water predominantly shifting towards the east–west direction more than the north–south. The shifts between 2017 and 2020 and between 2020 and 2022 were clearly discernible, with the latter stage (2020–2022) being more significant than the former (2017–2020); ③ According to observations, Taitma Lake’s changing water area has been primarily influenced by human activity over the last six years. Based on the research findings of this paper, it was observed that this study provides a valuable scientific basis for water resource allocation aiming to balance the development of water resources in the middle and upper reaches of the Tarim and Qarqan Rivers, as well as for the ecological protection of the downstream Taitma Lake.

Abstract Urethral stricture secondary to urethral injury, afflicting both patients and urologists, is initiated by excessive deposition of extracellular matrix in the submucosal and periurethral tissues. Although various anti-fibrotic drugs have been applied to urethral stricture by irrigation or submucosal injection, their clinical feasibility and effectiveness are limited. Here, to target the pathological state of the extracellular matrix, we design a protein-based nanofilm-controlled drug delivery system and assemble it on the catheter. This approach, which integrates excellent anti-biofilm properties with stable and controlled drug delivery for tens of days in one step, ensures optimal efficacy and negligible side effects while preventing biofilm-related infections. In a rabbit model of urethral injury, the anti-fibrotic catheter maintains extracellular matrix homeostasis by reducing fibroblast-derived collagen production and enhancing metalloproteinase 1-induced collagen degradation, resulting in a greater improvement in lumen stenosis than other topical therapies for urethral stricture prevention. Such facilely fabricated biocompatible coating with antibacterial contamination and sustained-drug-release functionality could not only benefit populations at high risk of urethral stricture but also serve as an advanced paradigm for a range of biomedical applications.

Abstract Background Forensic biology is a subject in the field of forensic science that stresses practical teaching and training in laboratory skills. Visualization of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) profiles is important in individual identification and is easily performed by well-trained examiners. Therefore, developing a novel training project for obtaining individual DNA profiles can improve the quality of teaching for medical students or trainees. DNA profiles based on quick response (QR) codes can also be applied to practical teaching and operation training for individual identification. Methods A novel training project was developed through an experimental course in forensic biology. Blood samples and buccal swabs with oral epithelial cells, as used in the forensic DNA laboratory, were obtained from medical students at Fujian Medical University. DNA was isolated, and a number of short tandem repeat (STR) loci were used as genetic markers to generate DNA profiles. The students converted DNA profiles and individual information into a QR code. The QR code could then be scanned by a mobile phone for consulting and retrieval. Gene identity cards with QR codes were produced and provided to every student. The participation rate and passing rate of students who participated in the novel training project were calculated and compared with those of students in the traditional experimental course, and a chi-square test was carried out by SPSS 23.0 software to evaluate the teaching effectiveness. p

The performance change and mechanism of polyimide composites with carbon fiber sizing and desizing states during thermal aging at 330 ℃ were compared and analyzed from the aspects of thermal oxidation mass loss, surface morphology and micro morphology, mechanical properties and glass transition temperature. The results show that carbon fiber desizing can reduce the mass loss rate of thermal oxidation of polyimide composites. The interface layer of the composites with sizing carbon fiber contains epoxy sizing agent, which has low temperature resistance. Therefore, the interface is easy to be damaged in the process of thermal aging, resulting in more cracks and rapid separation of edge fibers. Although the composites with sizing carbon fiber has high interlaminar shear strength before aging, it decreases rapidly in the early stage of thermal aging. On the contrary, the interlaminar shear strength of the composites with desizing carbon fiber is higher after aging for 200 h. The bending strength of the two composites before aging is basically the same, but the bending strength of the composites with sizing carbon fiber decreases rapidly in the early stage of aging; however, desizing has little effect on bending modulus. The glass transition temperature of the composites with desizing carbon fiber increases by about 15 ℃. After thermal aging, the glass transition temperature of the composites with sizing carbon fiber increases slightly, while the composites with desizing carbon fiber remain unchanged. Therefore, the high temperature desizing treatment of carbon fiber is conducive to improving the stability of polyimide composites for long-term use at high temperature.

Abstract Background Pectin is a heteropolysaccharide that acts as an intestinal immunomodulator, promoting intestinal development and regulating intestinal flora in the gut. However, the relevant mechanisms remain obscure. In this study, pigs were fed a corn-soybean meal-based diet supplemented with either 5% microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) or 5% pectin for 3 weeks, to investigate the metabolites and anti-inflammatory properties of the jejunum. Result The results showed that dietary pectin supplementation improved intestinal integrity (Claudin-1, Occludin) and inflammatory response [interleukin (IL)-10], and the expression of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α) was down-regulated in the jejunum. Moreover, pectin supplementation altered the jejunal microbiome and tryptophan-related metabolites in piglets. Pectin specifically increased the abundance of Lactococcus, Enterococcus, and the microbiota-derived metabolites (skatole (ST), 3-indoleacetic acid (IAA), 3-indolepropionic acid (IPA), 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (HIAA), and tryptamine (Tpm)), which activated the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) pathway. AhR activation modulates IL-22 and its downstream pathways. Correlation analysis revealed the potential relationship between metabolites and intestinal morphology, intestinal gene expression, and cytokine levels. Conclusion In conclusion, these results indicated that pectin inhibits the inflammatory response by enhancing the AhR-IL22-signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 signaling pathway, which is activated through tryptophan metabolites.

Societal Impact Statement Increasing atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition represents a major global change factor, but its long‐term effect on tree growth and carbon (C) sequestration remains uncertain. Our manipulation experiment and meta‐analysis reveal that N deposition in temperate and boreal forests promoted tree growth and the allocation of more C into wood than into leaves in China and worldwide. Thus, N deposition may increase forest C sequestration through enhanced wood production and distribution of C into stable sinks. In the context of achieving “Carbon Neutrality,” understanding how N deposition affect long‐term forest C sinks will help us with mitigation strategies under climate change. Summary Increased nitrogen (N) deposition is driving many temperate and boreal forests in the Northern Hemisphere towards N saturation. However, it is uncertain how long‐term N deposition affects tree growth and carbon (C) allocation in these forests. To investigate this, we treated temperate larch and mixed forests in northeastern China with N additions for 8 years. In addition, we collected data from 25 N‐addition experiments in temperate and boreal forests worldwide to reveal the overall effects of N on tree growth and C allocation. Nitrogen additions significantly promoted total biomass increment by 24% in both study forests, with on average additional 8 kg C per kg N gain into woody biomass over the study period. Nitrogen additions increased the ratio of woody biomass increment to foliage litterfall production in the larch forest (by 34%). Literature data analysis also revealed greater N promotion on wood (24%) over foliage (9%) production. However, the positive effect on foliage diminished over time. These results combined imply that N deposition may promote tree growth in temperate and boreal regions and drive proportionally more photosynthate allocation into wood than leaves, thus may enhance forest C sequestration in the long run.

Spatiotemporal continuity of surface water datasets widely known for its significance in the surface water dynamic monitoring and assessments, are faced with drawbacks like cloud influence, which hinders the direct extraction of data from time-series remote sensing images. This study proposes a Time-series Surface Water Reconstruction method (TSWR). The initial stage of this method involves the effective use of remote sensing images to automatically construct multi-stage surface water boundaries based on Google Earth Engine (GEE). Then, we reconstructed regions the reconstruction of regions with missing water pixels using the distance relationship between the multi-stage water boundaries in previous and later periods. When applied to 10 large rivers around the world, this method yielded an overall accuracy of 98% for water extraction, an RMSE of 0.41 km2. Furthermore, time-series reconstruction tests conducted in 2020 on the Lancang and Danube rivers revealed a significant improvement in the image availability. These findings demonstrated that this method could not only be used to accurately reconstruct the surface water distribution missing water images, but also to depict a more pronounced time variation characteristic. The successful application of this method on GEE demonstrates its importance for use on large scales or in global studies.

Although high temperatures influence gut health, data on underlying mechanisms remains scant. Using a pig model, this study performed a global analysis on how chronic heat stress affects the transport and immune function of the gut through transcriptome, proteome, microbial diversity and flow cytometry. A total of 27 pigs with similar body weights were assigned into 3 groups, control (Con) group (23 °C), chronic heat stressed (HS) group (33 °C), and pair-fed (PF) group, in a controlled environment for 21 days. Our results showed that pigs in the HS group had reduced growth performance and diminished height of ileal villi (P < 0.01). Transcriptome and proteome analyses demonstrated notable modification of expression of nutrients and ion transport-related transporters and gut mechanical barrier-related genes by chronic heart stress (P < 0.05), suggesting damage of transport functions and the gut barrier. Chronic heat stress-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress also increased the synthesis of misfolded proteins, leading to upregulation of misfolded protein degradation and synthesis, as well as vesicle transport disorder (P < 0.05). Energy supply processes were enhanced in the mitochondrion (P < 0.05) to maintain biological processes with high energy demands. Furthermore, chronic heat stress activated complement cascade response-related genes and proteins in the gut mucosa (P < 0.05). Our flow cytometry assays showed that the proportion of gut lymphocytes (CD4+ T cells, T cells, B cells in Peyer's patch lymphocytes and CD4+ CD25+ T cells in intraepithelial lymphocytes) were significantly altered in the HS group pigs (P < 0.05). In addition, the occurrence of gut microbial dysbiosis in the HS group pigs was characterized by increased potential pathogens (e.g., Asteroleplasma, Shuttleworthia, Mycoplasma) and suppression of beneficial bacteria (e.g., Coprococcus and Aeriscardovia), which are associated with gut immune function. Altogether, our data demonstrated that chronic heat stress induced gut transport and immune function disorder associated with endoplasmic reticulum stress in growing pigs.

Abstract Protecting and restoring the degraded arid lakes are globally urgent issues. We document a potential recovery of the dried salt-lake, Lop Nur called "the Sea of Death" which is located at the terminus of the largest inland basin in China, the Tarim River Basin. The changes and relationship of surface water with climate parameters and groundwater in the basin over the last 30 years are analyzed, by using satellite remote sensing and land data assimilation products. We find that with increased surface water in the basin, the groundwater level in Lop Nur began to show an obvious positive response in 2015; and the rate of decline of the groundwater level is slowing down. We argue that after a balance is achieved between regional groundwater recharge and evapotranspiration, the Lop Nur ecosystem will gradually recover. This study shows an encouraging case for the protection and restoration of degraded lakes in dryland regions around the world.
