Abstract Introduction The intention of chemsex-practicing gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) to reduce their drug use is an important factor for the utilization of harm reduction services. This study aimed to examine data from an integrated sexual health services center to understand the relationship between the intention to reduce chemsex behavior and chemsex-related utilization of mental health services among GBMSM who engage in chemsex. Method We used data collected from Healing, Empowerment, Recovery of Chemsex (HERO), an integrated health center in Taiwan, between November 2017 and December 2021. As the baseline, clients were asked to rate the current and ideal proportions of their sexual activities that involved the use of MDMA, ketamine, methamphetamine, GHB/GBL, or mephedrone. Having the intention to reduce chemsex was defined as having a lower proportion of ideal engagement compared to actual engagement. The data on the use of the services provided at HERO were linked to the survey responses and compared to information gathered during regular follow-up visits. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses and a Poisson regression analysis were performed on the data. Results A total of 152 GBMSM reported engaging in chemsex, of whom 105 (69.1%) expressed the intention to reduce their chemsex behavior. Service utilization ranged from 23.0% for participating in meetings of a chemsex recovery group, 17.1% for visiting a mental health clinic, and 10.5% for using both of these services. Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted employment, housing, and food security for low-income public benefits recipients. The present study seeks to understand public recipients’ self-reported critical and ongoing needs at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study uses logistic regression to analyze survey data gathered on 10,089 public benefits recipients in the early stage of the pandemic to better understand their self-reported critical and ongoing needs. We also explored variations in need among different racial/ethnic groups and public benefits receipt status. Our research found that respondents from most racial/ethnic minority groups indicated a significant need for food, housing, and back-rent, with variation among different racial/ethnic groups in expressing specific needs for finding employment and help with applying for public benefits. Our findings also identify SNAP/CalFresh recipients as a particularly vulnerable group, and they were more likely to need help with food insecurity, finding employment, applying for public benefits, and paying backrent. While numerous federal, state, and local programs and initiatives were created to address widespread need, this study identifies potential gaps in these efforts and increases understanding of how to target aid for low-income populations in times of crisis.

Abstract Treating metastatic brain tumors remains a significant challenge. This study introduces and applies the Patient-Derived Tumor Spheroid (PDTS) system, an ex vivo model for precision drug testing on metastatic brain tumor. The PDTS system utilizes a decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) derived from adipose tissue, combined with the tumor cells, to form tumor spheroids. These spheroids were subsequently used to test anticancer drugs, with results compared to the clinical outcomes observed after administering these treatments to patients. Difficulty in visualizing anatomical structures has been identified as a challenge in anatomy learning and the emergence of three-dimensional printed models (3DPMs) offers a potential solution. This study evaluated the effectiveness of 3DPMs for learning the arterial supply of the head and neck region. One hundred eighty-four undergraduate medical students were randomly assigned to one of four learning modalities including wet specimen, digital model, 3DPM, and textbook image. Posttest scores indicated that all four modalities supported participants' knowledge acquisition, most significantly in the wet specimen group. While the participants rated 3DPMs lower for helping correct identification of structures than wet specimens, they praised 3DPMs for their ability to demonstrate topographical relationships between the arterial supply and adjacent structures. The data further suggested that the biggest limitation of the 3DPMs was their simplicity, thus making it more difficult for users to recognize the equivalent structures on the wet specimens. It was concluded that future designs of 3DPMs will need to consider the balance between the ease of visualization of anatomical structures and the degree of complexity required for successful transfer of learning. Overall, this study presented some conflicting evidence of the favorable outcomes of 3DPMs reported in other similar studies. While effective for anatomy learning as a standalone modality, educators must identify the position 3DPM models hold relative to other modalities in the continuum of undergraduate anatomy education in order to maximize their advantages for students.

Background: In Hong Kong, breast cancer is the commonest female cancer. In addition to intrinsic risk factors that cannot be modified, other factors may be potentially modifiable. The objective of this report was to determine modifiable risk factors in association with breast cancer among Chinese women in our locality. Methods: This is a case-control study that enrolled breast cancer patients from the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Registry and healthy matched controls from the local community between 2014 and 2017. Potential risk factors were analyzed using multiple logistic regression. Results: In total, 5186 breast cancer patients and 5571 controls were recruited. Several modifiable risk factors were identified. Self-perceived high stress level (adjusted odd ratios [AOR]= 3.44; 95% confidence intervals [CI] = 3.13-3.78), dairy-rich diet (AOR = 3.33; 95% CI = 2.01-5.52), delayed child-bearing (AOR = 2.23; 95% CI = 1.79-2.79), meat-rich diet (AOR = 1.77; 95% CI = 1.54-2.04), ever use of oral contraceptives (AOR = 1.34; 95% CI = 1.22-1.47), nulliparity (AOR = 1.21; 95% CI = 1.08-1.35), and being overweight/obese (AOR = 1.21; 95% CI = 1.10-1.32) were found to be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. On the other hand, breastfeeding (AOR = 0.76; 95% CI = 0.69-0.83) and exercise (odds ratio = 0.62; 95% CI = 0.56-0.68) were associated with decreased risk. Conclusions: In our locality, high-stress level, meat- and dairy-rich diet, reproductive history, use of oral contraceptives, and being overweight/obese were identified to be modifiable risk factors for breast cancer. Lifestyle modification may help reduce breast cancer incidence in the coming decades.

Lactobacillus, a genus of lactic acid bacteria, is known to coexist symbiotically in the female vaginal microbiota and has gained attention as a potential probiotic with benefits for female reproductive health. This study aimed to evaluate the probiotic potential of Lactobacillus gasseri BELG74(BELG74), isolated from the vaginal microbiota of Korean women, in promoting vaginal health through growth ability, pH reduction, lactic acid production, and antimicrobial activity. Among 36 Lactobacillus gasseri strains, BELG74 demonstrated the highest growth capacity at 1.84 × 109 CFU/mL and the lowest pH of 3.84. BELG74 produced the most lactic acid at a concentration of 20.12 g/L, which correlated with anti-pathogenic activity against Gardnerella vaginalis, Fannyhessea vaginae, and Candida albicans of more than 90%. It also showed high acid resistance (92.2%) and bile resistance (25.3%), ensuring its survival through the gastrointestinal tract. Furthermore, BELG74 exhibited strong biofilm formation and adhesion capacity of 28.7% to HeLa cells, making it effective in colonizing the vaginal environment and suppressing pathogenic bacteria. The reduction of IL-1β by 63% suggested anti-inflammatory effects. Additionally, BELG74 effectively neutralized trimethylamine and ammonia by over 99.9%, suggesting its ability to reduce unpleasant vaginal odors. These findings indicate that BELG74 could be a promising probiotic for improving vaginal health, with further clinical studies needed to confirm these benefits.

This article investigates the level of anatomical knowledge of the Hong Kong public and uses the data to help suggest public engagement activities and health campaigns to raise health literacy in the general population. In the annual public engagement event organized by the University of Hong Kong, 250 attendees took a survey assessing basic anatomical knowledge by putting organs/structures in their correct positions. Description analysis, correlation analysis, independent sample t-test, and one-way ANOVA analysis were conducted by SPSS 27.0. Overall, a mean score of 6.5 out of 20 was achieved. Differences between various demographic parameters were analyzed, and the results showed that better performance on the survey was associated with younger age, higher educational levels, and having healthcare experience. There was also a statistically significant difference in correctly positioning the thyroid between males and females. Interestingly, some misconceptions were thought to arise from the bespoke use of the Chinese language in the survey. The data reflected room for improvement in the level of anatomical knowledge among the public, notably in the older age groups. This was attributed partially to a lack of public outreach initiatives and established anatomy-focused programs, which has restricted public exposure to anatomical knowledge and hindered the development of anatomical sciences in Hong Kong. In conclusion, the knowledge of the public on the human body needs to be improved and possible solutions to improve public awareness of health were raised.

Electric Cell-substrate Impedance Sensing (ECIS) is an impedance-based, real-time, and label-free measuring system for monitoring cellular activities in tissue culture. Previously, ECIS wound healing assay has been used to wound cells with high electric current and monitor the subsequent cell migration. In this study, we applied ECIS electric fence (EF) method, an alternative to electrical wounding, to assess the effects of different surface coatings on human keratinocyte (HaCaT) migration. The EF prevents inoculated cells from attaching or migrating to the fenced electrode surface while maintaining the integrity of the surface coating. After the EF is turned off, cells migrate into the cell-free area, and the increase in measured impedance is monitored. We cultured HaCaT cells on gold electrodes without coating or coated with poly-L-lysin (PLL), poly-D-lysine (PDL), or type-I collagen. We quantified migration rates according to the different slopes in the impedance time series. It was observed that either poly-L-lysine (PLL) or poly-D-lysine (PDL) limits cell adhesion and migration rates. Furthermore, the surface charge of the coated substrate in the culture condition positively correlates with the cell adhesion and migration process. Our results indicate that the EF method is useful for determining cell migration rates on specific surface coatings.

Fast charge/discharge scheduling of battery storage systems is essential in microgrids to effectively balance variable renewable energy sources, meet fluctuating demand, and maintain grid stability. To achieve this, parallel processing is employed, allowing batteries to respond instantly to dynamic conditions. By managing the complexity, high data volume, and rapid decision-making requirements in real time, parallel processing ensures that the microgrid operates with stability, efficiency, and safety. With the application of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) in scheduling algorithm design, the demand for computational power has further increased significantly. To address this challenge, we propose a Ray-based parallel framework to accelerate the development of fast charge/discharge scheduling for battery storage systems in microgrids. We demonstrate how to implement a real-world scheduling problem in the framework. We focused on minimizing power losses and reducing the ramping rate of net loads by leveraging the Asynchronous Advantage Actor Critic (A3C) algorithms and the features of the Ray cluster for real-time decision making. Multiple instances of OpenDSS were executed concurrently, with each instance simulating a distinct environment and efficiently processing input data. Additionally, Numba CUDA was utilized to facilitate GPU acceleration of shared memory, significantly enhancing the performance of the computationally intensive reward function in A3C. The proposed framework enhanced scheduling performance, enabling efficient energy management in complex, dynamic microgrid environments.

China's migrant population has significantly contributed to its economic growth; however, the impact on the well-being of left-behind children (LBC) has become a serious public health problem. Text mining is an effective tool for identifying people's mental state, and is therefore beneficial in exploring the psychological mindset of LBC. Traditional data collection methods, which use questionnaires and standardized scales, are limited by their sample sizes. In this study, we created a computational application to quantitively collect personal narrative texts posted by LBC on Zhihu, which is a Chinese question-and-answer online community website; 1475 personal narrative texts posted by LBC were gathered. We used four types of words, i.e., first-person singular pronouns, negative words, past tense verbs, and death-related words, all of which have been associated with depression and suicidal ideations in the Chinese Linguistic Inquiry Word Count (CLIWC) dictionary. We conducted vocabulary statistics on the personal narrative texts of LBC, and bilateral t-tests, with a control group, to analyze the psychological well-being of LBC. The results showed that the proportion of words related to depression and suicidal ideations in the texts of LBC was significantly higher than in the control group. The differences, with respect to the four word types (i.e., first-person singular pronouns, negative words, past tense verbs, and death-related words), were 5.37, 2.99, 2.65, and 2.00 times, respectively, suggesting that LBC are at a higher risk of depression and suicide than their counterparts. By sorting the texts of LBC, this research also found that child neglect is a main contributing factor to psychological difficulties of LBC. Furthermore, mental health problems and the risk of suicide in vulnerable groups, such as LBC, is a global public health issue, as well as an important research topic in the era of digital public health. Through a linguistic analysis, the results of this study confirmed that the experiences of left-behind children negatively impact their mental health. The present findings suggest that it is vital for the public and nonprofit sectors to establish online suicide prevention and intervention systems to improve the well-being of LBC through digital technology.

Social innovation has increasingly become a hot topic in China, a process in which multiple sectors collaborate with each other, aiming to change the status quo through creative, effective, efficient and sustainable ways. InterBoxes is an innovative project in the form of a social enterprise that commits to improving physical school conditions by building libraries, classrooms, schools and dormitories with refurbished cargo shipping containers called “Boxes”. Within the scope of this project the word “Inter” signifies that each Box is equipped with an Internet connection to the outside world. Conceptually, as a social enterprise, the for-profit, business arm of InterBoxes is projected to operate within metropolitan areas, building structures such as cafés, gyms, bookstores, etc., all which will generate revenue to support the nonprofit operation in rural areas. This descriptive case study examines the implementation and use of InterBoxes as a library in a rural primary school and addresses the promises and challenges facing the project. The findings indicate that InterBoxes demonstrates much potential as a social innovation to improve physical school conditions and other rural education issues through the creative use of space and place. Recommendations for scaling up its operation in connection with a larger global network of innovation using shipping containers are discussed.

The impact of the medical curricular reform on anatomy education has been inconclusive. A pervasive perception is that graduates do not possess a sufficient level of anatomical knowledge for safe medical practice; however, the reason is less well-studied. This qualitative study investigated the perceived challenges in learning anatomy, possible explanations, and ways to overcome these challenges. Unlike previous work, it explored the perceptions of multiple stakeholders in anatomy learning. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and the transcripts were analyzed by a grounded theory approach. Three main themes emerged from the data: (1) visualization of structures, (2) body of information, and (3) issues with curriculum design. The decreasing time spent in anatomy laboratories forced students to rely on alternative resources to learn anatomy but they lacked the opportunities to apply to human specimens, which impeded the "near" transfer of learning. The lack of clinical integration failed to facilitate the "far" transfer of learning. Learners also struggled to cope with the large amount of surface knowledge, which was pre-requisite to successful deep and transfer of learning. It was theorized that the perceived decline in anatomical knowledge was derived from this combination of insufficient surface knowledge and impeded "near" transfer resulting in impeded deep and "far" transfer of learning. Moving forward, anatomy learning should still be cadaveric-based coupled with complementary technological innovations that demonstrate "hidden" structures. A constant review of anatomical disciplinary knowledge with incremental integration of clinical contexts should also be adopted in medical curricula which could promote deep and far transfer of learning.
