Almond is highly produced in the NE of Portugal, where late frosts during flowering, low precipitation, and high tempera- ture in summer affect productivity and quality. Despite the use of late-flowering cultivars, plant biostimulants (PBs) and boron-based fertilizers can also be used to improve cell division, vegetative growth, photoassimilates rate, and nutritional status. PBs are widely used in some food crops, but the evaluation of their effects is still scarce. We treated three-year- old almond trees of cv. ‘Vairo,’ growing in a rainfed orchard in the NE of Portugal, with four individual treatments: two PBs (based on seaweed extract and free amino acids) and two boron-based fertilizers (applied on soil and leaves). Three monthly applications of seaweed extract (AN), free amino acids (AA), and boron ethanolamine (BE) were made. A single application of boron on the soil (BS) was made. Leaf samples were collected in treated and untreated (control) trees in cytogenetic and molecular analyses through the summer of 2019. The mitotic cell cycle analysis was performed to prepare mesophyll dividing cells stained with silver nitrate, and the molecular stability was assessed with five marker systems. This work aimed to extrapolate which individual treatment conferred higher mitotic cell cycle regularity and molecular stability. The cytogenetic and molecular data achieved in the cv. ‘Vairo,’ under the edaphoclimatic conditions studied, revealed that the individual treatments AA, BE, or BS induced higher leaf mitotic indexes, regular mitosis, and molecular stability, which might increase the photosynthetic area and production. ResumoA fratura isolada de Tillaux representa uma rara e frequentemente mal diagnosticada fratura de tíbia distal anterolateral em adultos. Normalmente ocorre em adolescentes que se aproximam da maturidade esquelética por avulsão do ligamento tibiofibular anteroinferior. Este estudo de revisão de literatura baseada em caso tem como objetivo lembrar a existência dessa identidade em adultos, resumir seu mecanismo de lesão, diagnóstico e procedimentos de tratamento. De acordo com a literatura, este é apenas o oitavo caso descrito: uma mulher de 46 anos sofreu uma fratura isolada de Tillaux com 4 mm de deslocamento e realizaram-se redução e fixação aberta com parafuso canulado duplo. Após a reabilitação adequada, alcançou-se um excelente desfecho funcional e radiológico. É importante reconhecer e tratar adequadamente essas lesões distintas para evitar maiores instabilidades, alterações degenerativas e limitação da função articular do tornozelo. Um diagnóstico precoce e a osteossíntese apropriada desempenham um papel significativo em um prognóstico de recuperação bem-sucedido.

Introduction: Most of avoidable defibrillator therapies can be reduced by evidence-based programming, but defining tachycardia configurations across all device manufacturers is not straightforward. Aims: To determine if a uniform programming of tachycardia zones, independently of the manufacturer, result in a lower rate of avoidable shocks in primary-prevention heart failure (HF) patients and also if programming high-rate or delayed therapies can have some benefit. Methods: Prospective cohort with historical controls. HF patients with a primary-prevention indication for a defibrillator were randomized to receive one of two new programming configurations (high-rate or delayed therapies). A historical cohort of patients with conventional programming was analyzed for comparison. The primary endpoint was any therapy [shock or anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP)] delivered. Secondary endpoints were appropriate shocks, appropriate ATP, appropriate therapies, inappropriate shocks, syncope and death. Results: 89 patients were assigned for new programming group [high rate (n=47) or delayed therapy (n=42)]. They were compared with 94 historical patients with conventional programming. During a mean follow-up of 20±7 months, the new programming was associated with a reduction in any therapy (HR = 0.265, 95% CI 0.121-0.577, p=0.001), even after adjustment. Aproppriate ATP and any shock were also reduced. Syncope did not occur. Sudden, cardiovascular and all-cause deaths were not different between the groups. In the new programming group, neither highrate nor delayed programming were better than the other. Conclusions: In our study, programming tachycardia zones homogeneously across all manufacturers was possible and resulted in a lower rate of therapies, shocks and appropriate ATP.

Microalgae have a lot of potential as a source of several compounds of interest to various industries. However, developing a sustainable and efficient harvesting process on a large scale is still a major challenge. This is particularly a problem when the production of low-value products is intended. Chemical flocculation, followed by sedimentation, is seen as an alternative method to improve the energetic and economic balance of the harvesting step. In this study, inorganic (aluminum sulfate, ferric sulfate, ferric chloride) and organic (Zetag 8185, chitosan, Tanfloc SG) flocculants were tested to harvest Chlorella vulgaris in batch mode. Preliminary assays were conducted to determine the minimum dosages of each flocculant that generates primary flocs at different pH. Except for chitosan, the organic flocculants required small dosages to initiate floc formation. Additional studies were performed for the flocculants with a better performance in the preliminary assays. Zetag 8185 had the best results, reaching 98.8% and 97.9% efficiencies with dosages of 50 and 100 mg L−1, respectively. Lastly, a 24 full factorial design experiment was performed to determine the effects of the flocculant dosage, settling time, and mixing time on the Zetag 8185 harvesting efficiency. The harvesting efficiency of C. vulgaris was optimal at a dosage of 100 mg L−1 and 3 min of rapid mixing.

Presentation of case This article reports a clinical case of a 81-year-old woman with a history of right breast erythema and edema associated to breast pain, with over two weeks duration. Physical examination demonstrated mammary asymmetry and inflammatory signs with orange peel skin. She had the right upper limb swollen and palpable axillar and supraclavicular lymph nodes. The principal suspicion was an inflammatory breast cancer. Imaging was unspecific. Core needle biopsy of an axillary lymph node and of the breast mass identified morphological and immunophenotypic features consistent with diagnosis of primary non-Hodgkin DLBCL. Patient was guided by Hematology. Discussion The clinical and imaging findings in breast lymphoma can mimic those of breast carcinoma. Sometimes, PBL presentation is suggestive of Inflammatory breast cancer. Diagnosis depends on adequate tissue sampling for histology examination and immunophenotyping. Background. This study was conducted to assess the variation in prescription practices for systemic antimicrobial agents used for prophylaxis among pediatric patients hospitalized in 41 countries worldwide. Methods. Using the standardized Antibiotic Resistance and Prescribing in European Children Point Prevalence Survey protocol, a cross-sectional point-prevalence survey was conducted at 226 pediatric hospitals in 41 countries from October 1 to November 30, 2012. Results. Overall, 17 693 pediatric patients were surveyed and 36.7% of them received antibiotics (n = 6499). Of 6818 inpatient children, 2242 (32.9%) received at least 1 antimicrobial for prophylactic use. Of 11 899 prescriptions for antimicrobials, 3400 (28.6%) were provided for prophylactic use. Prophylaxis for medical diseases was the indication in 73.4% of cases (2495 of 3400), whereas 26.6% of prescriptions were for surgical diseases (905 of 3400). In approximately half the cases (48.7% [1656 of 3400]), a combination of 2 or more antimicrobials was prescribed. The use of broad-spectrum antibiotics (BSAs), which included tetracyclines, macrolides, lincosamides, and sulfonamides/trimethoprim, was high (51.8% [1761 of 3400]). Broad-spectrum antibiotic use for medical prophylaxis was more common in Asia (risk ratio [RR], 1.322; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.202-1.653) and more restricted in Australia (RR, 0.619; 95% CI, 0.521-0.736). Prescription of BSA for surgical prophylaxis also varied according to United Nations region. Finally, a high percentage of surgical patients (79.7% [721 of 905]) received their prophylaxis for longer than 1 day. Conclusions. A high proportion of hospitalized children received prophylactic BSAs. This represents a clear target for quality improvement. Collectively speaking, it is critical to reduce total prophylactic prescribing, BSA use, and prolonged prescription.

The ternary complexes formed between vanadium(III) and picolinic acid (Hpic) and dipicolinic acid (H2dipic) with the dicarboxylic oxalic, malonic, and phthalic acids (H2ox), (H2mal), and (H2phtha) briefly (H2L) were studied in aqueous solution by means of electromotive forces’ measurements emf(H) at 25 °C and 3.0 mol dm−3 KCl as ionic medium.
